"Wrestling Post: No Mercy, Hell in a Cell and beyond"

Why do I know the payoff for this Orton/Wyatt feud is gonna be garbage?

This Curt Hawkins thing is definitely garbage.

I like the Smackdown tag team feuds going on right now. The women's feuds are okay but not great.

I hope Cena is the feud that gets Dean to the next level. Sometimes it takes a guy calling you out.

Once again, Oak27's prediction series. Final card posted on Thursday:

Am I alone in this?

Am I missing something? Because as far as I can see there's just nothing good about her. Everything she says and does is really, really bad. She's so it over the top in the way she acts she comes across as a 15 year old poser trying really, really hard to be cool in the trendiest, most vanilla way imagineable.

all I know about current wrestling is what I saw on Sunday. But her and that other little blonde she wrestled with are both annoying as shit. Screaming the same thing over and over and over. But at least the little one has some moves.

That could have gotten her a little more exposure and have gotten her over by the time the draft would have came around. Even if she hadn't start wrestling yet. That would have given them time to shape her character and at least say the reason for her turning heel was to rebel against the fact she was taken from being in the spotlight with them to now having to go at it alone and she's pissed about it. She was with Enzo & Cass in NXT originally so her gimmick made no sense on the main roster. Then they turned her heel and it still doesn't.

I don't watch NXT, so I didn't know that. She seems like Enzo's female counterpart, but it comes off like an 80's wrestling over-the-top version of the character, too cartoon-ish. Add to that the fact that she kinda blows in-ring, and I don't get the push at all.

In response to Reply # 5

They often call these people up from NXT and forget that the majority of the audience doesn't watch NXT regularly if they watch at all.

They've done a great job with the women or KO/Zayn of showing all their history, but alot of people they just throw on the roster and expect to be as over as they were in NXT.

I think educating the crowd on how Carmella came up with Enzo and Cass and maybe giving her some attitude about how they came up first, got all these opportunities and left her behind to fend for herself would go a long way to making people care about her.

Instead they were just like hey here's a girl that you'll probably just find to be an annoying Enzo rip off.

Same thing that would have really helped people like Bo Dallas or Neville be more over

And gave him tons of vignettes about how positive he was, but there was only one place for that to go without a title.

And Neville was pretty well over before he broke his ankle.

Corgan is the new TNA majority owner and is expected to rebrand the company.

Kind of sucks for Corgan to lose their history like that but I am intrigued with the notion of moving forward with an entirely fresh start.

I wonder if he still has a TV deal.

WZ Swipe:

http://www.wrestlezone.com/news/761625-tna-being-purchased

There is breaking news regarding the sale of TNA.

According to WZ’s Justin LaBar, sources are reporting WWE will be purchasing the TNA video library.

Furthermore, Billy Corgan is going to become the new majority owner and is expected to rebrand TNA into a new company.

We will have more information when it becomes available.

This news is released only two days after reports surfaced that Dixie Carter addressed the locker room before the Impact taping Monday night.

In response to Reply # 0

Lot of rumblings about that being near completion, not merely rumors of discussions that have popped up off and on the last few years.

Can't decide if I want to see him on Raw or SD. My hope is SD and they build that as the inter-promotional match at Mania, but there are some issues with that. My gut says he'll be a Raw guy and that's fine since SD is building out fairly well right now.

This looks like a pretty big week for WWE, all things considered.

They'll likely use the TNA tape library to bolster AJ's profile in a big way and if Angle returns there's an awful lot that can be done with him. My guess is a HOF induction in the next three years.

It also bodes well for Roode and paves the way for WWE to be more open to other TNA wrestlers in the future since they can actually control the narrative better now.

Not that I'm excited to see them shape history in their image, but I am excited about the doors this could potentially open up.

Lesnar was on his way out the door and burning every bridge and Goldberg was still getting heat from being Goldberg in the WWE.

I think people will pop for his return, but interestingly enough people are starting to sour on Lesnar again so it'll be interesting to see how people feel by Survivor Series.

18. "I'm cautiously optimistic"
In response to Reply # 12

I’d say a few things are working to make this a much better situation than the first match.

-I can’t fathom them bringing Bill back just to hoe him out like everyone else on the roster and I can’t fathom Bill signing up just to be another visitor to suplex city. At a minimum there’s hope for a competitive match well above most of what Brock has had recently.

-As you said, people are beginning to sour on Brock. Bill will get a hero’s welcome upon his return and my guess is this gets a traditional heel/face dynamic even if WWE tries to make it ambiguous.

-At least one participant has some motivation to work the match since Bill has repeatedly spoken about wanting his son to be able to see him wrestle.

Not that the original set some high bar, but there’s definitely enough factors to make this an interesting attraction to me. How it turns out is anyone’s guess but I’m cautiously optimistic.

No reason not to get a promo between them or something on Smackdown if they were gonna reveal it.

given the mystery opponent and the goofiness of these promos it's kinda set up as a braggadocious guy who will be put in his place immediately. if it's a big name* it will mitigate the damage of losing in his debut, but i really don't think they care how the guy looks.

*but really, they probably think kane is a big enough name to sell it. they still don't realize how bad losing to kane looks in 2016.

If Becky isn't available here's a cool thing you could do. Alexa Bliss comes out and gives the standard "She's too much of a coward and that's why she won't face me" heel speech. Maybe she talks about how people don't think she deserved the #1 contendership and says she could beat any woman in that locker room. All of a sudden Asuka shows up, repeats what she's been saying in NXT (she's bored with the competition there). Maybe they just fight and maybe Asuka challenges Bliss to a match that she's kinda already talked her way into. Either way, Asuka beats the shit out of Bliss. It doesn't have to be her official debut either. She can say "You know what? Smackdown doesn't have enough competition for me either. I'm out!" Then she finishes up her run in NXT and comes back at Mania season. Sure it'd bury a woman currently on the show, but Asuka needs to look badass and I think this could be a nice one-night thing that creates a lot of intrigue for her real debut.

Didn't watch it (deep depression over the Charger game, then Texas/Toronto and the debate). From what I heard, there were a bunch of last minute changes...did it come off hurried and unorganized or was it usual WWE PPV fare? Any match stand out (good or bad)?

Looking back on the brand split Dolph has had the best overall arc of either brand. Mix is second.

AJ is fantastic as the Face That Runs The Place but nobody has a better overall story during this time than these two.

It was the only match I cared about and the only one I honestly had time for and while I'm not dishing out any stars just uet they had just the sort of match you want to see after their respective storylines the last three months.

I fully expect Dolph to get a massive pop on SD Tuesday.

after SD last week, I knew he was winning, just didn't change the pick...DAMN...LOL.

I love the Miz...perfect character blended with just enough in-ring talent. Him as a heel champ was great, and I hope he gets the belt back shortly. Ziggler is...well...I acknowledge that he's a workhorse as far as I've seen, and I agree with your assessment that his potential for pop is way up there...I don't know, he just doesn't do it for me though...he has never had a storyline that made me interested in supporting him..ok on the mic, but not great, very good in-ring, but not enough for it to carry him on its own...he's in that middle zone, doesn't generate enough either way for me to like or hate him. I get his popularity, it just isn't for me. *shrug*

A few are getting a little too played out (Opening match, for example) and a few times I've come up with some that didn't have much variety in our guesses, so going forward I'm going to ask for input on bonus questions starting with the next PPV, Hell in a Cell.

Yes or No, Over/Under, How Many, etc. Have at it. With it being Hell in a Cell there will probably be one "Will anyone escape?" or "Will anyone break in?" for each HIAC match.

In response to Reply # 0

Two advertised matches didn't take place (Becky v. Alexa, Hawkins v. TBA) and the opening match ended up being advertised, so 4 out of the 13 original predictions were scrapped. That left us with only 9 possible points up in the air. KCPlayer21 didn't even need to watch No Mercy seeing as he already knew early all of what was going to happen with 8 out of 9 correct predictions. Here's how the rest of us did:

KCPlayer21 8
Jimaveli 6
magilla vanilla 6
Stankpalmer 6
Af-1 5
Oak 27 5
Great1 2k7 4
Max_Ptah 4
pretentious_username 4
Selassie I God 4
Y2Flound 4

Current Leaderboard (Pts):
Af-1 27
Jimaveli 27
pretentious_username 25
Oak 27 25
Selassie I God 22
Y2Flound 22
KCPlayer21 20
magilla vanilla 18
Great1 2k7 17
Max_Ptah 15
Stankpalmer 6
im_freshhh 1

From a match standpoint, No Mercy was our best event so far with a 62% correct prediction rate (41 out of 66). This includes only match predictions and does not include any predictions that were left blank. In total after 4 events we have a 59% correct prediction rate (171/291).

Overall Match Prediction Rate
No Mercy 62%
Backlash 61%
Clash of Champions 59%
SummerSlam 54%

Next Event: Hell in a Cell (October 30th, ~3 weeks away)

Depending on how many of us there are in it, you evenly divide the 30 numbers among us randomly and if your number wins you get 5/10/whatever amount of bonus points.

My friends and I do that every year for money and it's a lot of fun (minus the years when you know the entrant number of the obvious winner early like when Benoit was #1 and then it's just a matter of who draws that number)

You could add some extra bonuses too: Points if your wrestler doesn't make it in the ring, Points if it's a legend returning etc... but that complicates it a bit

Of course these are all luck points which take away from the idea of picking winners, but it's fun.

What my plan is now, although we can all vote on what direction to take, is for everyone to select 5 numbers, 1 thru 30. You don't need to have unique numbers from someone else, multiple people can have #16 for example. You will get X points if one of your #s is the winner (multiple people can get these points if more than one person has that #, but also theres a chance nobody gets those points), and then I am going to total up the number of eliminations all of your #s have and whoever has the highest total gets X points. It's gonna be impossible to evenly distribute the #s unless we have 5, 6, 10 or 15 people. if a few people drop out by the Rumble and we only have 10 active people still predicting we can do it that way.

>

I'm going to have a point for guessing #1 entrant, #30 entrant (assuming these arent announced prior to the match), the Iron Man (longest time in match), who has the most eliminations, and 1 point for every correct Final Four guess.

>

I'm gonna stay away from it becoming an event where you can get like 50 points as that makes all of the other events less meaningful in the overall series. I'd say in the end I'm gonna aim for a max of 20 points, WrestleMania will prob have a similar total, maybe a few more, but I don't want these events to completely trump all of the others.

Guessing the entrants who haven't been announced (this could get messy and should only be done if there are like 8 or less slots left, but we did 1 point for active roster, 2 for returning from injury/hiatus, 3 points for legends)
Most eliminations
Quickest eliminated
Last eliminated
Ironman
#1 and/or #30 entrant if not already announced

but yeah, typically I've done breaking down the 30 entrants and everyone picks a few out of a hat.

Points for having the winner, someone in final four, a surprise entrant (return, legend, etc), first to be eliminated, longest time in match and then negative points for first to be eliminated, shortest time in match

Maybe what I'll end up having is a Royal Rumble event prediction sheet for just predicting the winners of the matches (including the Rumble match) as well as explicitly guessing things like most eliminations, first entrant and longest time in match. Then have an additional Rumble Match prediction sheet for points for having the # entrant for all the things above, whether we each have unique numbers randomly sorted or just pick 5 without it being random, and allowing people to select the same number(s) as other people.

I'll post something in early January and we can figure out what would be the most fun for everyone, but either way, I'm gonna need to get some triple A's for the TI-85 Plus before then.

65. "Took my parents to No Mercy for their first wrestling event"
In response to Reply # 0

Sunday was my mom's birthday so I hadn't planned on going. During lunch I mentioned wrestling was in town at the new arena. As soon as she said "Oh that sounds like fun! I'd want to go to that," my ass was on Stubhub buying last minute tickets lol.

- The new Kings arena is gorgeous, a huge upgrade from the old Arco Arena. Great sightlines from all parts of the arena, otherwise you can watch on the massive video board above the floor. The concourse reminds me of Staples Center with most of the concessions being local businesses. There's huge hangar doors that open up and let breeze and natural light into the arena. These were closed shut on Sunday because they were on the backstage side.

- Our tickets were originally in the 2nd row of the upper bowl, but ended up being blocked off due to the hard camera setup. Arena staff moved us to even better seats, hard camera side tickets halfway up the lower bowl.

- Starting the show with the triple threat was a questionable choice. The air was let out of the arena with the finish. Folks around me were thinking it was an elimination match but were confused then AJ came back in for win. Mom turned into a big AJ mark, participating in the dueling chants lol.

- The crowd was pretty flat until the IC match. I think Rob pointed out in the last thread that there's a huge difference between the top guys and the undercard. Watching with my parents had me being mindful of what people who aren't invested in the product are reacting to --- makes a little more sense in what Vince considers "over".

- Plenty of heat for the Miz and huge pop for the Ziggler in what everyone agrees should've closed out the card. Crowd was on its feet for the last 10 min of the match. Hopefully these two keep up the momentum, they deserve it.

- Watching it live, you gain an appreciation for the ring crew and how quick they are to change out the mats after every match. There's a lot of hard work behind the scenes to put these shows together.

- In person, the Wyatt entrance is second to none. My parents even popped at the cheesy "blowing out the electric lantern" spot. I could see the rational of having Harper's surprise return close out the show, but the highlight of the night in the arena was Ziggler's win.

- Overall a great experience. I think it was 2-3 matches too long for my parents' taste, but I think that could've been easily fixed had the card been rearranged.

Not to get them into it. I've mostly given up on that, but to say "See? This is why I love this dumb thing."

I'm amazed they switch out all the ropes for the Cruiserweight matches twice a show. What a pain in the ass.

and then ripping it off after the match. My guess is they have 12 guys, one for each rope on each side, assigned to do the task. If that's the case it probably takes all of a minute to put it on, and less than that to take it all off.

Nothing else has been framed so effectively since Cenas stellar US title run.

SO WHY, OH WHY, do they have to camp it up with the Spirit Squad?

I wasn't thrilled with their inclusion last night but it worked. This isn't the way to follow up last night's match.

It really seemed like they turned a corner.

Now the only way to make Raw memorable is to throw a Sasha vs Charlotte title match or something in there just to keep you on your feet.

This wasn't the Pipe Bomb or anything like that. But it was authentic, a case of an old warrior coming back to the battlefield with a different perspective than he last had. I think that's a cool story to tell, I don't know. The part about wanting to be a hero to kids all over the world one more time immediately gets people behind him, and it's made all the more effective by the poorly-kept secret that Brock is actually a dick in real life and cares only about money.

I agree that it was really effective.

That's what I got from it and why I liked it. It felt genuine and I'd take that any day over something scripted and forced out. By Goldberg standards this was a good promo imo.

Fascinated by how the match will play out - can't see Goldberg winning but would be surprised if he signed up just to come back and lose seeing how protective he is over his legacy.

the A.J. - Ellsworth thing is just dumb IMO. Curt Hawkins is getting the Eva Maie treatment (big special ring entrance then finding excuses not o wrestle)...works somewhat when you're a sexy woman, not so much for Curt. Alexa Bliss...well she beat Naomi (who I think should get push) by using her one move and not much else. The Spirit Squad??? come on...

I hope this isn't a trend towards corny, boring shows like Raw has become. I realize not every week can be a blockbuster, but the last week or two....IMO they had a big lead on Raw and now the lead is dwindling quickly...

They certainly have a documented history of putting the brakes on things and people that get too hot when they aren't supposed to.

How long can they let the flagship show look bad compared to the other show?

http://www.wrestlezone.com/news/766241-baron-corbin-talks-not-being-liked-by-his-wwe-peers-his-hatred-towards-the-wwe-fans-why-wwe-needs-someone-like-him-and-more

WWE star Baron Corbin was a guest on last night’s WWE Talking Smack and below is a recap of his interview:

On Not Being Liked:

The fact that people don’t like me, doesn’t bother me. I’m not going to shed a tear for not being liked. I’m not here to make friends, I’m not coming here to make a best friend who is going to be at my wedding, or somebody who I can call if I am frustrated. The reason I am here is to make money, it’s that simple. If someone wants to be my friend, too bad. If you want to call me a loner because of it, because I don’t need people, then so be it. If I have a friend, when I have a match, and you have a match with that person, then most people hold back, I’m not. I’m going to get the job done for me, I’m going to collect that check and move up in the ladder.

On Whether He Had this Mentality When Playing Professional Football for the Arizona Cardinals:

No, my attitude and the way I carry myself has never changed. If you look up what I did in Arizona, you’ll see that I fought my way through training camp. I didn’t have a problem fighting my teammates. They weren’t my friends, they were my teammates, and I worked with them to accomplish our goals. But, at the end of the day, if I have to punch you in the face, during practice, then I’m going to do that, and I had to do that several times, and that is what helped keep my job, and helped me get paid. My Offensive Line Coach was an original hog, and Offensive Linemen are naturally nasty and mean people, and that is what we did. If it’s your teammate that is getting in front of you to achieve your goals, then I have no problem putting them down.

On His Hatred Towards the Fans:

I have a fiance that 99% of the world dreams about. They dream they can find, but will never find something like that. People like me, people like the 1% get the 1%, so off time for me I live in a big house with a lake and a pool. I have music and video games, I can take my bike out for a ride. I’m looking at a 1964 Lincoln Continental right now, so I’m working on that. I just do my thing. I go to a lot of rock metal shows, and I enjoy my time to myself and my fiance enjoys those things too, and you know, we don’t need people to do that. I have a close group of friends, but they’re not here. I don’t care about the people that work here, I don’t care about the fans who sit in the stands. These fans are a bunch of idiots. They sit there and boo you and tell you they hate you, but then they are the first person in the airport waiting in line at 5am waiting for you to sign an Action Figure. Half of these people print something off of a computer because they don’t want to buy your merchandise, and they want to go and sell it because they want to avoid getting a real job. They are trying to make money off of my back, and I think that is stupid and ignorant. People that try and think they can go and make money off my back buy signing an Action Figure for them and then go put it on EBay. A lot of people need to realize–see, without someone like me, you don’t have a job. You don’t sit here and interview on the table, because you don’t have a superstar like me to sit here and draw people into watching this show. People like you need people like me to draw people in. You know, you bring in these little guys who have wanted to be wrestlers their whole life, telling their tired-sob story about why they are here; something they have dreamed about since they were six years old. They saw someone on TV and that was who they wanted to be like. That’s not a superstar; that’s these guys who sit at home in their Mom’s basement on Twitter and run their mouths, and their favorite wrestlers thinking that they can be like them.

which is GREAT. it comes off as not a character, but that this guy is an actual prick that no decent person would like. it's not an act (Owens) or humorous in the least bit (Jericho) so there's absolutely no reason to like the guy. THIS is the kind of guy WWE needs more of. between his actual personality and wrestling ability that isn't good enough to make fans cheer him for being a great performer, he is 100% a heel.

at Mania. They already blew their "Streak" load on Brock so the only way to really put Taker's Mania presence to good use at this point is to have a guy like Corbin absolutely demolish him in a very vile manner and turn it into a big time angle.

Obviously they'd have to tell the tale but they should have Corbin start planting seeds around SS, talking about how the WWE is his "yard" and he's the "big dog" and what have you. Shit, let him ride a bike down once or twice. As long as he continues to decimate the roster they can set up for Taker to show up after Corbin goes ape shit on Kane right after the Rumble.

Basically they need this to be a full blown squash. People will know Taker is old and blame it on that, but if the beating is severe and done without shortcuts Corbin will still come away looking dominant. Of course, he'd only get so much heat after delivering a fair and square ass whoopin, so he'd have to lose his mind after the bell and finish the job with a vicious post-match beating for good measure.

Build up a young babyface up during that timeframe, don't give him a match on the card, and have him make the save. Maybe an NXT call up, I dunno. They could even revisit his feud with Crews or even a newly turned AJ Styles OR... a returning Kurt Angle. Hell even Cena. There are plenty of options. That follow up would be white hot all through Payback.

Obviously I'm spitballing here but I think something like that can elevate him in a big way while hiding his weaknesses without jumping the gun on him.

In response to Reply # 0

Maybe not a huge part, but the gear they wear should really add to the mystique. Instead we get the most Hot Topic-esque version of this gimmick.

It's too early to judge their gimmick, but Sanity looks more in line with how I think the Wyatts should look. Like that with a tinge less Mad Max.

Instead of just dressing like Max Cady or Leatherface like he did in NXT (and when he debuted).

I don't think Harper's ever NOT going to wear his disgusting beater, and Rowan's coveralls were just fine. They look like dudes from the Deep South that got caught up with this deranged guy, and that works. The gear's not as much of the problem as nothing they do ever sticks.

Kane and Taker got their "souls taken" only to show up the next week like it was fine. They could have teased Bryan as a member of the Family for a lot longer. And let's not go into Wyatt-Ambrose (although that speaks to a larger point - they were a LOT better when they had the Shield to bounce off of).

At this point, they need to shelf Bray for a bit, and either bring him back as another wrestler with good mic skills, or bring him back as an actual evil force that undermines BOTH brands (or works in cahoots with Stephanie, Corporate Ministry style). Hell, you could have Bryan "activate" on Smackdown at weird times during backstage setups. Have one of the Cruiserweights slowly "turn" Family.

that's the worst. I've complained about it before and didn't want to repeat myself, but those 2 things bother me a lot. The booking is the primary issue though, you're right.

it struck me this week after seeing Luke's intentionally cut up hoodie trenchcoat thing. and Rowan's weird flinstones-like patches bother me.

that was their plan for Bryan but allegedly the Yes chant taking off outside of WWE changed Vince's mind. but yeah, besides losing nearly every feud he's added 1 member to the team and converted 0 people. not a very successful 3 years for a cult. it's really bizarre considering how many wrestlers were struggling and could've used the lift of a character change. Why wouldn't they convert guys like Ziggler or Bo for example? What was Vince afraid of damaging there? It's not like their merch sales are irreplaceable. And you can always have them snap out of it and go back to the old character.

that's really interesting. i think since they have such an aversion to adding people to the family then a singles run with a different gimmick is the more likely route.

edit: NONE of their gear should have crisp screenprinting.

He stumbles across dad's old briefcase and suspenders backstage and psychologically breaks into Bray Wallstreet.

Or trade on him being Blackjack Mulligan's grandkid. Him in a nasty stiff tag with Strowman could be good.

Twice in the last year they've come really close to getting him somewhere special -

I recall a Raw about a year ago when he teamed with Roman and teased a babyface turn and the crowd was SO hot. I saw a top guy potential in him then and here that I hadn't seen before. He tore his calf that same week I do believe.

They brought him back as a heel and he's plodded through everything since. They really missed the mark on him when he lost the Smackdown number one contender's match to Dolph in a four way. The Dolph/Dean program was fine but the Summerslam match was awful and Dolph could've ended up right where he is now without that feud. The answer was Bray. If you're gonna position this as an all new era and show, go with an all new guy. Would've made him.

Saw Cody at an indie show last night and he got on the mic after and said something to the effect of "Next time you go up to Stamford, Connecticut make sure you tell them I'm not just my first name." For the record, he can use Rhodes when he's not on TV, but why do this? This family is wrestling royalty and Dusty didn't start there. You have no right to the name. Cody's also very likely to come back at some point and he's already going to be worth more money, why anger him before that?

and in most cases that includes your name. Sometimes the timeframe is limited (similar to a "no-compete clause) but if you wrestle for them, they call just about all the shots. That's why most people change names when they get there. "Cody Rhodes" isn't his legal name, so I'm pretty sure they own that.

they kinda sorta announced it as the main event and then backed off. someone has to reign them in or book this creatively, cause they'll just go all out otherwise.

1) Climbing to the top, inside or out, means either the person is literally on top of the cell, or when climbing physically touches the top or has to duck their head in order to not hit the top of the cell from the inside.

2) This does not include managers or authority figures (exception being Triple H). Needs to be an actual superstar who competes in matches.

Haven't seen him since the triple threat and imagine he's moved away from Ambrose and AJ now seeing as they're still going at it.
What would you do with him at this point, who should he feud with? (On a hunch, I'm thinking when Joe loses against Nakamura, he'll debut on Smackdown and come for Cena.)

Use him like they used Hogan the last few years of his original WWF run where you mainly see him on PPV's and only occasionally on the weekly shows. Let these other guys be the workhorses, Cena did that long enough and he gets stale in a hurry. Let him be the special attraction type of wrestler.

Yup. Once he gets going on those speeches, it's an instant channel turner for me. Hell, I'd be thrilled if he went "silent" for a long time and just showed up and whupped ass on occasion with no verbal explanation.

For example, Silent Crow Sting was the best thing ever for making him interesting again, because he was tired and boring before that.

It feels like there's this notion that Cena should be made to have hit this ceiling and that he should only be used sparingly and to put others over. Whenever he wins a big match, he gets accused of burying opponents, etc (not saying anyone in this convo is saying that by the way) but I don't really think that's the case.

I appreciate the irony of me saying this bearing in mind that he's had a lot of time off for personal projects this year but... he still delivers in the ring and on the mic as much as he ever has so not quite sure why he's relegated to "support status" when he has a good few years left in him before he hits that point.

In response to Reply # 0

the number one story going into this pay-per-view is if Sasha vs Charlotte headlines. Vince says no. Hunter says yes. And how violent will it really be? And will Charlotte do a stunt?

There's real-life intrigue surrounding this match - far more than any other match on the card. Maybe they know what they're doing here.

The match is going to headline, steal the show, and go down as a landmark moment for women's wrestling and for the company.

...or Vince gon Vince and it randomly goes on mid-card and the air is let out of the building after that.

Had they been the only HIAC match then I think they may very well have done it. Credit to Sasha - first woman in a WWE iron man match and a HIAC match. Crazy impressive.

I was hoping it's the women but I don't think the feud is hot enough to justify it. All 3 are good match-ups, but I have a feeling this could be another long PPV, and from the little of Raw I've watched the past month they have done an awful job of putting this together.

In terms of tonight's card I think they had the best match of the 3 HIAC matches as well as the best storyline going in so I have no problem with the main event as being deserved.

In terms of all time great HIAC matches, no it's not up there.

I also don't think you have to have Charlotte get another run, but oh well.

Yes. It would've been better if they had the only hiac match on the show.

Practically speaking, the best few hiac matches are impossible to 'top' because no one is going to sign off on any of the falls that made the hiac matches famous. Exception: silly ass Shane...and folks still didn't enjoy that cuz it was the 'waiting for Shane to do something risky' match. He did it then promptly lost.

The ladies were hitting notably hard all match long and the story was laid out well is you like the typical southern rasslin spin on Greek tragedy. Aka it was a classic 'body gave out on the underdog'. That powerbomb through the table at the beginning had a gang of stank on it and I enjoyed the Foley homage. Good main to me. Also, I had more issues with the other two hiac matches easily. Mainly, Roo Roo is booked like a loser ass ho. And Kevin is booked too much like a goober heel champ. I'd prefer him as a opportunistic jerk heel who can occasionally just smooth win a match.

Agreed. Main event was the best match on the show to me, and I'm not surprised.

Credit to WWE for allowing them to main event.

Felt completely flat and very disappointed at the ending though - figured it was a sure lock that Sasha would win and move on to another feud. Clueless at the decision for her to lose in the main event of her hometown(?).

Might as well take advantage since once it's gone it's gone for good.

I kind of like the idea that Charlotte and Sasha are so evenly matched that they just keep beating each other. It's more realistic and consistently makes them both look good.

From here I'm guessing we get Charlotte vs Bayley for a bit and Sasha can take on Dana or maybe even Nia Jax, then we will revisit this feud come Mania time again and let Sasha end the streak and get the win at Mania.

As much as I love Charlotte vs Sasha matches, I do hope they go their separate ways for a while now. As you say, this would be a good time to enhance some of the other women on the roster by feuding with each of them.

you only really have 2 built champion level players.

could move Kana up but then NXT doesn't have a bellcow for the womens division.

the brand split divided an already thin division. i personally think they should've put them all on smackdown but they can still work around that if they wanted to.

the inevitable nia jax monster heel run is going to be an albatross on the division

dana's terrible. shouldn't give it to her but you know they will.

If the women were on the same brand then it would still be the Sasha/Charlotte stories that have been showcased over the past months with no one else really getting any chance to do anything. Becky's a champ (which may never have happened otherwise), Alexa Bliss is doing great work on Smackdown too and when Charlotte and Banks do separate then they'll enhance who they work with next. I think the divisions will do well over time.

How would anyone feel about picking who will leave as champ rather than the "winner" of title matches?

Sure part of this is driven by my having New Day and not getting the point for it since my pick was based around not thinking they'd give Cesaro/Sheamus the belts yet and let New Day get at least closer to the record, but I also think that in general is where we can really control our outcome.

A lot out of our hands with a show when there are so many dusty ways to keep a champ a champ that you're unlikely to actually predict.

Just a thought, not make or break any way and this is just for fun obviously, but I feel like I wind up super torn picking title matches having to weigh all of the ways the person can or can't wind up with the belt when I know they will have it anyway which is the real prediction after all.

pick the winner, with maybe a bonus if you add the qualifier...

i.e.

Champ wins - 1 point

Challengers win belt - 1 point

Champs lose via DQ - 2 points

but if the group wants to change it, I have no problem with it.

If she was hurt and still took some of those bumps, I'd be surprised. It was a pretty physical match. With her not appearing tonight and them not setting up an angle for her or mentioning her for a survivor series spot, it makes me wonder.

I hope they're using the injuries and short title runs to fuel a heel turn. She's a good face, but I like her better as a heel.

Y2Flound had some interesting points above about where they might be going with it (#162) but I think the night would have ended on such a high if Banks had retained - and I think you needed it to end on a high considering the magnitude of the women main eventing.

In response to Reply # 174

I rewatched the match yesterday and am pretty sure Sasha was supposed to lean the table in the corner for that spot. Instead she left the legs up and just propped the table on the rope.

Had she gone for the powerbomb through the corner table, dropped charlotte and been thrown through it likely would have had a bigger impact of both of them giving everything for the win.

but I read Vince changed the finished an before the match started. I think he is ready to cash in on the possible Bayley money train. He wants an angle between her and Charlotte.

Same thing I said, but I think its gonna be the (retreaded) impossible underdog story angle leading up to either Rumble or Mania

Probably won't happen, but you could build up the talent to get there.

Mania I'm guessing will either be Charlotte vs Sasha or a triple threat with Bayley.

There are 2 great feuds left

Bayley vs charlotte and Bayley vs Sasha. I don't think we will see the Sasha heel turn for a while, she's still too hot as a face.

184. "So I've been on a promo kick. Some guys have aged well. Others?"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue Nov-01-16 11:39 AM by Cold Truth

This is absolutely not a definitive list, just some casual reactions to listening to these guys at work over the last couple of days.

Personally I think that if you want to get the full effect of a promo, you need a contextual understanding of everything going on in that particular program and how it fits their character in that moment. Solomonster has been doing a countdown of his favorite promos and that’s what lead me to this promo kick. I’m betting these observations would read differently if I wrote it two years from now.

-Savage and Jake are basically fine wine. Holy shit. Savage has a few moments where he crosses over into camp territory but his intensity always seems to cut through in a way that makes it work. Road Warrior Hawk was actually not far off of Savage. It doesn’t really matter what the fuck he said, if he looked at you and simply read the names of all the Telletubbies, most men with any fucking sense at all would simply respond with a docile “yes sir.”

-Dusty is very effective in what he does, but he’s extremely regional. He appeals to very base sensibilities so he gets his point across. I feel like he hits all the technical marks but the overall effect doesn’t work for me in 2016. I feel like I’d have to issue a “you had to be there to get the full effect” disclaimer if I were trying to put someone up on him, unless that person was from the south.

-Austin has aged better than Rock IMO, mostly due to Rock’s sillier content creeping in a little too often. Austin relies less on the quips and his work holds up much more consistently. Rock is still dope as fuck and untouchable as far as controlling and manipulating a crowd so it’s no diss to Rock.

-Jericho is all over the place but his main event run in 08 was immaculate. The odd thing about him is he has some of the cheesier, juvenile tendencies of Rock but since his character wasn’t always pulling double duty as a main event caliber badass it doesn’t really hurt him. Kurt angle is in this same category, though I’d argue they should have done far less comedy. In fairness I started digging through Angle’s work after Wade Keller made that point and I found that I agreed with Wade’s take.

Still, him and Jericho both had some stellar comedy work. Jericho's mic work is usually enhanced by his haircut and wardrobe, because his more ridiculous runs are typically mirrored with some equally outlandish props. He's aged extremely well overall.

-Shawn>>>Bret overall, but holy shit do these two have some bad moments. They both hit a damn good stride during Bret’s last year in WWE but they still had some bad moments. In fact nobody in the Hart clan was much of a promo.

-Pillman wasn’t as dope as I remembered. He got way too campy far too often. That and his wide eyed maniac look is too cheesy for me right today.

-Flair… man… I hate to say it but he’s always come across as a senile old man. His material obviously worked wonders but a lot of it is hard to sit through right today. He comes across like a homeless guy who hit the lottery. Come to think of it, look up John Mulaney’s Donald Trump bit and replace Trump with Flair and that’s basically how I see Flair. I’ve always kind of clowned on this aspect of his promos and it kind of hurt my pro wrestling inner child to listen to these.

-Ken Shamrock? LOL.

-Lex Luger? I really liked Lex as a kid but yikes. Much worse than I expected.

-Harlem Heat? Stevie Ray is unintentional hilarity. Booker is solid for the most part but Stevie Ray calling grown men “fruit booty” before he meets them in a sweaty wrestling match where said men usually wear nothing but underwear is just plain gold. Bonus points for Booker dropping an N bomb on the Hulkster.

-Sting wasn’t good. Crow was dope though and I still have fond memories of the bright, Cap’n Crunch jacketed Stinger. But nah.. his shit was very skippable, primarily to preserve said memories.

There is a 10 minute video on the Network of all of Cena's rap segments for the months building up his feud with Lesnar during the Dr of Thuganomics gimmick.

Obviously they don't hold up at all, but watching them with my girl who I got into wrestling over the last few years is mind blowing as she had never seen him like that. He was over and the gimmick worked, but looking at it now its almost unbelievable he has become one of their biggest stars of all time because that would be shit on now so bad.

And Jake, man. Dude was one of the only guys that never yelled his promo, and it had a HUGE effect.

I watched the documentary about him and Hall moving in with DDP and it seems like Jake is always 1 stressful conversation away from totally falling off the wagon.

I can see Vince having concerns about him falling back into his old ways really quickly if he winds up being a significant part of the company. Not only would that be horrible for Jake, but a PR nightmare that makes it seem pretty clear the WWE lifestyle is the issue.

That ultimately gives them a valid excuse not to unleash such a valuable resource, but he doesn’t fit the current WWE vision and he’s probably a threat to depart from their sanitized, corporate, pop culture leaning scripts.

I think he could be squeaky clean on the drug and alcohol tip and they still wouldn’t bring him in and if they did, they’d scrub out all of the cowboy out of everything his has to impart. Bray is dope in theory but he falls way short in this department but if he spit that Cubs promo it would be some hocus pocus voodoo shit.

All in all my guess is they still wouldn’t fuck with him like that.

Because the post was about guys whose promos aged well and those whose promos did not. It wasn’t a “top” list or anything of the sort.

It wasn’t meant to be an exhaustive blog post touching on every great promo guy.

In response to Reply # 0

A rare card in which every match took place (with no fuckery) and no additional matches were added at the last minute. Af-1 becomes our first 2-time winner and takes sole possession of first place overall. KCPlayer21 had his first poor showing and pretentious_username found himself in last place, one of four people who went 0-4 in the bonus questions. Speaking of which, this was clearly our worst showing in the bonus question department as 3 of the 4 questions resulted in only 0 or 1 right answers. Here's the final HIAC results:

Af-1 8
Jimaveli 7
Selassie I God 7
Y2Flound 7
Max_Ptah 7
magilla vanilla 6
KCPlayer21 5
Oak 27 5
Great1 2k7 4
pretentious_username 3

Current Leaderboard (Pts):
Af-1 35
Jimaveli 34
Oak27 30
Selassie I God 29
Y2Flound 29
pretentious_username 28
KCPlayer21 25
magilla vanilla 24
Max_Ptah 22
Great1 2k7 21
Stankpalmer 7
im_freshhh 1

At this point I think it's fair to assumeStankpalmer and im_freshhh have eliminated themselves so I've removed them from future docs, but feel free to add yourselves if you still want to compete.

For the second event in a we set a new high for match prediction rate at nearly 2 out of 3 correct guesses.

Match Prediction Rate (Overall: 61%)
Hell in a Cell 66%
No Mercy 64%
Backlash 61%
Clash of Champions 59%
SummerSlam 54%

Thanks for keeping this rolling. I'm watching all ppvs still. I 'watch' every few smackdowns with lots off ffwd and basically read up on raws. I feel like I'm missing good stuff on smackdown but there's just no time with 3.5 nights of football every week. I'm trying to win some fantasy leagues!

The rasslin is mostly $. I like some of the things they are trying to do but of course they still struggle with execution cuz they keep acting like a teleivised carnival moreso than a good tv show.

Kurt crazy man. His body stayed on the line all the time. Still tho...wwe needs to go ahead and put him on a show once the Goldberg program ends.

I get why they did the Goldberg thing. The window is closing on getting guys from that era back in the ring. And it's clear that they want them. And if Brock is gonna keep Brocking it up in all his programs, I'm fine with him not being on the scene against full-timers. I just hope those dudes can keep each other safe while still having a match with some impactful action sprinkled in between heat checking and posing.

Side: I wonder if they can really get Shawn to work a program with Styles? I'm doubting but we'll see. Of course, I trust Shawn to deliver beautiful work even now, so I'd love to see what they'd do.

their weekly fight for ratings is not working. it's not just the 3-hour format, but they're still doing the same old thing of trying to garner interest for THAT monday rather than the show as a long-term product. they love having a returning vet or a celebrity dominate the show and the majority of the roster suffers for it. they spend all week preparing these big segments and once they've squared those away they realize they've neglected half the script. they rush to complete the rest which is really just handing some scraps to bo and curtis axel and golden truth. those segments are always awful, but easier to stomach when the big segments land. lately the big segments have been massive duds so it's like 3 hours of watching paint dry.

if they're gonna put out this much wrestling every week they have to concede that a lot of people will catch up on Hulu/DVR/youtube/the network. those numbers will be helped most by word-of-mouth. i tried to catch up on raw this week but had no enthusiasm and skipped almost all of it. i try to give them the benefit of the doubt that some things are just smarky complaints and the fall is usually a rough time, but Raw took nearly all the talent in the draft and has put out garbage almost every week since. I think I gotta watch just PPVs till at least the Rumble. good segments will get a youtube watch maybe. otherwise it's just a waste of time.

I can't allocate those times to watch RAW and Smackdown every week (5 hours of wrestling over 2 nights and then NXT on Wednesdays!!!). Don't know how anyone can do it.

I catch up on results the next day and YouTube the big moments so it's not actually that bad.

It does seem clear the fact that RAW hasn't changed it's format since the draft implies it's still very much Vince's baby and he's way more protective of it than Smackdown.

they made such a big deal last year about Taker starting his WWE career at Survivor Series, what a way to add another SS moment to the video library. I'd love to see him hoss around with Strowman or watch KO take a Tombstone.

Yes, it's another rant on the sorry ass state of this piece of shit product that I wouldn't waste a second writing about if I didn't ultimately long for it to just. Get. Better.

Thank god McMOAR showed up to save the day at Mania.

Where would we be today without that heroic effort? Lord knows all this show needs is MOAR McMahons and perhaps a McMinion or three.

All praise due to the old gods and the new for the brilliant decision to let Akira Toriyama write out all the Brock storylines. With any luck they'll give Goldberg a few reps in the gravity chamber so he can at least look like he's going to hang before he gets obliterated.

Oh and Bailey? Great fucking job! I'm so glad they understand the things that made her work down in NXT. Otherwise she'd just come across like a socially awkward loser instead of a lovable underdog with an unyielding heart.

Oh and we get to see the corpse of The Deadman. What a bonus!! This is bound to be better than letting Baron Corbin come out and be a badass bully every week so he can actually grow as a heel.

Oh and ten man/five team SS teams? Genius! Just fucking genius!

Of course, such glowing praise would be incomplete without mentioning the charity checks being paid to Bob's Burger for his inclusion in the world title picture. Can't wait for his induction to the Barry Horowitz wing of the HOF. Here's hoping Louise writes that shit.

I DO like the semi-alliance between Dolph and Red Rhyno, except for the fact that American Alpha is the obvious and logical choice to allign with Dolph. That's just a nitpick though.

I'm not crunk about this one at all either, but I'll have it on along with the Sunday night game, but I can't promise to be awake for all of it!

I usually end up digging the in-ring 'action' and generally not 'caring' much about the booking/storytelling cuz it is SOS so often. It is on them for having this 'stretched out' and repetitive format. It is on me for having too much going on right now to lock in on the product.
