Injury Update: Ben Simmons Fractures Bone in Foot

Posted: Sep 30, 2016

Philadelphia 76ers forward Ben Simmons rolled his right ankle during the final scrimmage of the team's 2016 Training Camp at Stockton University earlier today.

After receiving an X-ray and MRI of the foot and ankle, the images were reviewed by Sixers Head Physician Dr. Christopher Dodson and Sixers Chief Medical Officer and Co-Chief of Sports Medicine Orthopedics at New York's Mount Sinai Medical Center Dr. Jonathan Glashow.

It was determined that Simmons suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal bone of his right foot.

Further medical evaluation and treatment options are being considered at this time and additional updates will be provided when appropriate.

I know people get scared when they see the word surgery but it's a really basic one and far preferable to conservative tx...one screw through the 5th MT to fixate the bone. 4-6 weeks recovery is standard.

I've had the same injury and surgery...it's actually a good sign that this happened off an acute injury rather than a certain movement pattern.

Regardless, hate to see this especially as he's building chemistry with the team.

Greater weight = more force through the 5th MT on an ankle roll? Or was it motor-control based (ie movement patterns changing due to a player not being used to a certain physique).

so much of it would have to be fat, it'd be pointeless. Plus wasn't he just 225 in college? He's listed at 240 now.

It will cost him a training camp which is definitely an issue.

MJ's was worse bc the navicular bone has notoriously low blood supply. A jones fx can be tricky because it has relatively low blood supply combined with a lot of attachments in that area which can disassociate the bone while its trying to heal...that's why surgery is the go to because a single screw fixates that bone.

But given the 6ers history and how they've let injuries play out recently- whose yo say they won't be ultra conservative here too and maybe go deeper than 8 weeks.

it's not like cartilage or anything, so it shouldn't be a problem I guess? but it takes a month or so before you can get back to activity
