"2016-2017 NBA Preseason Hype Thread Part 1"

So preseason kicks off today with media day. For the first time since I dont know when I am barely following the NFL. I have 1 fantasy team this year im vaguely keeping up with (in the past I averaged 3 and had as many as 5).

So NBA season is like Christmas. Lots of story lines. Lots of player movement. It should be a hell of a month before the season kicks off.

One of the bigger things in the last 24 hours is Nerlens shitting on the Franchise. Not sure how Philly fans will be able to say this one is taken out of context.,

"I think it's just silly . . . this situation that we are in now with three starting centers," Noel said on the eve of the Sixers' media day. "With the departure of Sam Hinkie, I would have figured that management would be able to get something done this summer."

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

In response to Reply # 0

They don't have to really worry about Noel or even rumors for blowing their leverage: everyone's noticed they had too many bigs before they ever drafted Simmons.

But what does Noel require back? Are they OK starting Saric immediately? Or worse, starting a backcourt of something like Rodriguez and Bayless instead of Covington and one of the other two?

In response to Reply # 6

Marcus Smart could be a fair deal although I don't think he fits with Simmons since neither can shoot. Jaylen Brown and RJ Hunter, perhaps?

Brandon Knight for Noel might make the most sense although they have Len and Chriss there to play alongside Dragan. I like Chriss, think Len is destined to be a journeyman backup.

Doubt Minny would give up Rubio for him but Noel would be a better fit alongside Towns than Okafor.

The Lakers wouldn't probably offer Clarkson whereas the Sixers would want Russell.

I'm sure Philly would love to trade him but the offers just aren't there. If Milwaukee can make a three team deal shipping Monroe out and a young starter to Philly it could work but who is giving up a young starter for a year of Greg Monroe?

like others have said, I just don't think the offers are there. on paper, for both teams, I like the Blazers pick most, but Davis just signed that $20mil deal and the 76ers don't need a center entering his prime, they want to nudge Okafor towards whatever his prime might be and see of Embiid even has a chance to reach his.

In response to Reply # 0

Don't really care about how high the stakes are; I knew what was coming as soon as we sign Durant. Shoot, they'd still be high if we hadn't signed him and kept Barnes and Ezeli instead.

I don't see a lot of games that we **should** lose on the schedule, but I do know that we aren't going to try for 74 wins this season. So it will be all about continuing to build chemistry and our rotation. Said it a few months ago, but we'll inevitably lose and game that we shouldn't early in the season, or drop two out of three a few times, and that will cause sports writers and OKS posters to write dumb shit, but I figure that's part of the game.

What I'm really looking forward to is watching to see how the younger bench players come into their own. I want to see if McCaw is the real deal, if Looney develops into something special, if Damion Jones ever get healthy enough to make it on the court, and even guys like Clark and McAdoo can elevate their games. And I'm also interested in the bench vets, particularly seeing how West fits in, and if McGee can get his head straight.

So, tally ho and sally forth and all that shit.

He never played pg but for the past 4 seasons he's been the primary ball handler. The of basically dribbles across half court and finds harden.

I really want to see KJ mcdaniels develop. His defensive potential is really the key that can unlock harden as. Full time pg. either that or you just play him and go minus offensively from one position since you have a guy like Ryan Anderson spacing things out long at 4.

The one issue with harden playing a lot of oh will be turnovers.

The one the Rockets still have't answered, is that unlike most PGs, he doesn't guard the opponent's point guard. But then again, lots of guys don't. Otherwise, watch dude play; he plays the point. Shawn's over here trying to parse between that and primary ballhandler; dude plays the point. We just likely won't be playing Patrick Beverley next to him anymore, which both excites and terrifies me.

every possession AND get other guys involved in the offense vs. getting the ball in the half court and looking for your shot or passing it when you get doubled.

Lebron although not technically a pg or guarding the other pg has been more of a pg through his career than harden.

bringing the ball up is easy for Harden, he has elite handles, plus the ref is looking right at the ball ready to blow it (pause).
Pringles did it precisely so James would waste LESS energy than he did trying to get open for a pass after the nominal PG brings the ball up.

Once again I just hope we make the playoffs. Only thing I am predicting is this team plays hard. We need to get Bron on the Tim Duncan rest plan now to start saving him for later. He has Kobe level wear and tear on his body as far as minutes go and no one seems to realize it.

More minutes for Dipo at the point, I guess. Although I assume Russy will be on the court for 90% of the game.

"Earl Watson said Bledsoe, Booker, Warren, Dudley and Chandler will start tonight and that will be the Suns regular-season lineup."

I didn't realize that Dragan and Chriss are really the only PFs on the roster right now. I wonder if they see if they can move Knight for a PF or if they just hope one of those two prove to be ready from Day 1 and can eventually take the spot from Dudley.

and it hasn't stopped them from playing with pace or fielding a top offense.

i can't imagine that replacing dwight w/ younger, more mobile bigs and installing SSoL guy's system means that they'll be running *less*

i def see them back closer to the mid 50s rather than the 41 win team of last season.

As I've been trying to tell people who have been tiredly throwing out the chemistry and depleted bench platitudes: A)These dudes are the rare team that truly embodies that selfless spirit B) The starting 5 will be red-lining at such an RPM that their bench won't have all that much pressure on them; even when the starters are on the floor, both Steph and KD can share on-ball responsibility so even if they play 35+ minutes, both will be able to conserve energy while on the floor because either can take a breather to play spot-up shooter.

the rim and blocking shots made me think about how much they needed that element last year.

and their shooting.

dayum. i saw the practice excerpt where kd and klay were alternating shooting 3s from the top of the key and hit about 20 in a row, nonchalantly.

man. and only saw from the middle of last night's game. but steph was getting open looks. i'm like, how is that happening? run it back on tivo, durant comes up and sets high screen for him, one of the two of them is gonna be left open.

gonna be a lot of x and o'ing around the league tryna figure this shit out.

peace & blessings,

x.

doing a quickie 2K league with them before I pick a down and out team to try and bring out of the doldrums. routinely scoring 130 points and taking less than 18 shots with each guy, running Durant out there with the bench for almost the entire 4th quarter half the time.

curry and durant both caught foot injuries that'll have them out for a couple weeks (I hear this is actually some weird issue with the game where star players are getting foot injuries pretty often) and it's like...fine. still have Draymond, Klay, Iggy, Shaun. we can go two weeks without you dudes, take a nap. lol. I'm just imaging if I were the Knicks and Melo/Porzingis went down I'd delete the save right there lol.

If they can't win 67 games and a title with two former MVPs then this season goes down as the biggest disappointment in league history.

Fuck that whole team and I'm hating the whole way. This takes Bron's title for taking the easy way out and sets a new standard for ring chasing in your prime.

In response to Reply # 0

Optimism for the Detroit Pistons is at its highest level in years.

But there might be a dark cloud coming.

ESPN's Marc Stein tweeted this morning that the Pistons are "fearing" that point guard Reggie Jackson might miss "extended" time to start the season and they will look for point guard help on the open market.

The team's current backups are Ish Smith, Lorenzo Brown and Ray McCallum (Detroit Mercy).

Jackson missed practice Tuesday with what he described as knee tendinitis.

It's a step back and it requires the other starters to step up (Looking at you KCP) but I thought Ish was pretty good last year and could fill in for that time.
I'm not sure what they could really get that would be better? MC-W would most likely cost too much in a deal. Maybe a guy like Raul Neto to handle backup duties instead of Ray Macallum.

I'm optimisitic.

Basketball is a team sport. I think that the Warriors are an overwheming favourite to win this year, but I think that this year's Blazers team has the chance to break the mould on the super-team concept that the Celtics spearheaded and that Lebron capitalized on.

It just sucks that the Warriors supplemented their already incredible team with a player who is almost indisputably better than last year's "best player in the league"/"unanimous MVP" point guard.

Things go in cycles. I'm hopeful that things could work out for *my* squad for once.

Lillard and CJ are a nice backcourt but FILF's right about their issues on D and I don't think they are good enough on their own to carry a team to the promised land.

One of the bigger issues for me is that I'm still not a believer in Vonleh. I think they should have made a different deal for Batum.

Would it make more sense to deal CJ for a big and roll with Crabbe and Turner at the 2? Perhaps. I like their bigs enough that I don't think there's a need to rush it but they have to see how this season goes and figure out if there's another way to get an upgrade to their 4/5 spots (Also not a believer in Festus being anything more than he is.)

...to carry a team to the promised land are named Lebron. Even the guy who won MVP unanimously isn't good enough to do it on his own.

That's exactly my reason for optimism. They have a deep team and don't have to do it on their own.

>Lillard and CJ are a nice backcourt but FILF's right about
>their issues on D and I don't think they are good enough on
>their own to carry a team to the promised land.

They were not the best defensive backcourt in the league last year, but they have the athletic ability to improve in that aspect.

I think that's such a lazy argument, though. The Blazers were an above-average team defensively last year. Last I checked the Blazers' opponents have a more difficult assignment covering Dame and CJ than the other way around.

>One of the bigger issues for me is that I'm still not a
>believer in Vonleh. I think they should have made a different
>deal for Batum.

That issue is moot. They have plenty of coverage at that position if Vonleh doesn't pan out. They got nothing in return for Wes, LMA, or Rolo. The fact that the trade didn't work out was neutralized by the success of their other moves.

>Would it make more sense to deal CJ for a big and roll with

They don't need to make any deals currently. They've got 2 of the absolute best scorers in the league, and enough depth at every position to be as versatile as anyone. Really it's just gonna be about the development and performance of Meyers Leonard, Festus Ezeli, Mason Plumlee, and Mo Harkless. All those guys have huge upside.

they were below average (bottom half of the league) in pretty much every relevant defensive metric.

20th in points allowed per possession. 5th-highest oppt's 3p%. 5th-highest personal fouls committed. 5th-highest oppt's FTs per FGA. defensive rebounding percentage was about average (13th)

mediocre defensive team, at best.

I like Plumlee and think Harkless could develop into a nice 3 and D player but I wouldn't say the upside is huge and I don't see them moving this team to the next level.

I think their overachieving last year was buoyed by the fall of the West's second echelon squads. This year, I think some of the teams on the rise will be battling them and a team like Memphis could have a last gasp with a healthy Gasol and Parsons.

I like the Blazers but I didn't love their offseason and I'm not seeing them making a big leap this year. I just don't see them moving out of the middle of the pack. But hey, we'll see.

They remind me a bit of the Celtics. A bunch of nice talent but not enough to make them a real threat. I'm hoping adding Horford will be able to do the trick for Boston but I still feel like we're a player away.

Wiz might be my last place squad. CHA and ATL don't really interest me much either. Of those teams (I'd probably move the Pels down into this group; love AD but that roster is terrible.)

Then again, since he includes the playoff/zeitgeist element, I can see how his rankings end this way. Although I feel like part of the League Pass experience is the freedom

And I'd just check the score of the Nets game to see how the C's pick is coming along.

Way better than 30. Just like last year when they said Charlotte would be unwatchable.
The nets will play with pace and shoot 3s this season. Brook isnt the roll man Tyson Chandler was, but hes obviously a much better pop option.

Lots of random guys (aside from Jlin) who are underdogs that peopel will end up rooting for. They team will play hard and compete and have a fun brand of basketball. People will be mad including Celtics fans who want a better pick.

Rockets are back as a top 10 team for the offense and possible Lolz. But I believe Harden and Pringles get some redemption on their reps this year. Again folks will be mad.

In response to Reply # 0

I know the Kings have a ridiculous front office and I know that people don't like MC-W but McLemore has been a complete bust so far. And they need a point guard. Unless they have a bigger deal for Rubio or a better point guard in the works, this is a head scratcher.

http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/243531/Kings-Reject-Bucks-Offer-Of-Michael-Carter-Williams-For-Ben-McLemore

The Milwaukee Bucks offered Michael Carter-Williams to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Ben McLemore.

The Bucks have a need at shooting guard with Khris Middleton out for approximately six months with a hamstring injury.

McLemore and Carter-Williams are both members of the 2013 NBA Draft class and will be restricted free agents in the offseason.

The Kings have Darren Collison and Ty Lawson on their depth chart at point guard

It sounds like Bledsoe is a leader in Phoenix so I doubt they dump him for nothing. Especially not two guys who could be gone after the season.

Also, McDonough and Ainge had history together which I wouldn't be surprised helped grease the wheels of the Lil Zeke deal. I doubt Vlade and Co. would be able to pull off that kind of heist.

Bledsoe is a MAJOR injury risk, I don't see anyone trading for him besides a team that has nothing to lose like the Kings.

At the end of the day, the Suns have a logjam at the PG position. Booker himself like the handle the ball so they are going to be FORCED to ship out at least one. The Kings have enough assets (besides Boogie) to acquire either Bledsoe or Knight, if that's what they want.

Especially since both are expiring contracts.

Also, given that Bledsoe is a MAJOR injury risk, it makes sense to have extra bodies at the point guard spot. I'm a fan of Ulis but nobody is forcing a trade of Bledsoe because of him and Archie.

137. "SVG effusive on Henry Ellinson (pistons.com swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

Might be the steal of the draft at 18
_______

In less than 2 weeks, Ellenson convinces SVG he’ll be ‘really, really special’

Rookie Henry Ellenson has quickly convinced Stan Van Gundy he has a bright NBA future
Nathaniel S. Butler (NBAE/Getty)
by Keith Langlois Web Editor
Posted: Oct 07, 2016
Taking Henry Ellenson with the 18th pick made Stan Van Gundy happy on draft night because the scouting arm of the front office he assembled told him he should be.

It was confirmed for him the following morning, when he watched the Ellenson college videotape he’d been told to largely ignore during the predraft process because there was no way Ellenson would last that long.

In less than two weeks of training camp, “happy” has become something closer to “ecstatic.”

“He’s a gooood basketball player,” Van Gundy said as the Pistons prepared for this week’s preseason opener in Brooklyn, which ended in a 101-94 loss and marked Ellenson’s debut with two points and three rebounds in six minutes. “He’s got a chance to be really, really special.”

Before you blow by that last comment, understand this about Stan Van Gundy. He’s been in the NBA for two decades. He’s seen waves of first-round draft picks come and go. He’s as media savvy as any coach who’s ever walked an NBA sideline. He doesn’t hand out “really, really special” bouquets like business cards. He grasps the implications of such buildup.

He’s just that sure that in Ellenson, the Pistons have themselves a player.

“He’s getting better every day. He’s got a tremendous ability to focus and learn. A lot of guys work hard and they’re receptive and respectful, but it’s hard for them – or it’s slower, at least – to actually be able to incorporate what you’re doing into their game. He’s got a remarkable ability to assimilate what’s going on and go out and use it. He’s getting better and better and better.”

So much so that Van Gundy already is anticipating the day a rookie behind both Tobias Harris and Jon Leuer at power forward and a break-glass-in-case-of-emergency option at center behind Andre Drummond, Aron Baynes, Boban Marjanovic and Leuer will force some decisions on the organization.

“I know this: I wouldn’t have a problem putting him on the floor right now. He’s just not ahead of those other guys – nor should he be, at this point, less than two weeks into his NBA career. But he’s good enough that eventually – whether it’s sometime this year or early next year – he’s going to force us to think about how we use our frontcourt rotation. Because he’s pretty damn good.”

Van Gundy has been struck by how competitive Ellenson, who measured 6-foot-11½ at the NBA draft combine last spring, has been in Pistons scrimmages against players who are all well ahead of him in physical maturity. The Pistons are suddenly a very big, very physical team with Drummond, Baynes, Marjanovic and Leuer. Their edge in strength and experience gives them defensive advantages that Ellenson can’t yet match.

“His challenge is on the defensive end,” Van Gundy concedes. “But even there, I see improvement in terms of the team defense and being able to make his calls, his pick-and-roll coverage and other stuff. Individually, both in the post and on the perimeter, is going to be his challenge.”

Ellenson, though he hasn’t felt overwhelmed as a 19-year-old in a decidedly grown man’s world, concedes the adjustment of not having a physical advantage two years removed from playing small-school basketball in northwestern Wisconsin.

“It’s fun going against those guys and playing with them because I’ve never played with size like that before,” he said. “Maybe like one on a team but now you have three other guys – not as tall as me, except Boban – but playing with big guys at that size is a lot of fun. It’s been great for me.”

His defense at Marquette had two possibilities – “left” and “right” – and now he’s dealing with a dizzying array of calls and must make in-the-moment decisions and bark out calls to perimeter defenders.

“Out here you have a whole bunch of different things you can do with the ballhandler off the screen and depends on who you’re playing,” he said. “We have quite a few calls and you’ve got to know them quick. That’s something I think that’s probably my biggest adjustment, just making different calls and getting ’em out early and loud. Because if you’re not saying it quick enough, your teammate is getting hit. I know they don’t appreciate that, so it’s something you’re got to learn and I think it’s been going good.”

Van Gundy sees a day not far away when Ellenson is going to cause at least as many defensive challenges as he faces. You don’t often see big men – let alone teenaged big men – who so effortlessly handle the ball. Ellenson is deft at executing dribble handoffs or passing off the dribble, a skill made more effective by a perimeter shot already improved over a summer of coaching and practice.

“I think our front line is pretty good and so every day he’s playing against Marcus (Morris), Tobias and Jon,” Van Gundy said. “And he’s a hard guy to guard because he can shoot the ball, he can put it on the floor, he can pass off the dribble. We’re really, really happy with him and the last couple of days I’ve seen him getting better defensively.”

For every bit of coaching Van Gundy and his staff are giving Ellenson, they’re also observing to gauge all that he’s capable of doing before deciding what to harness. Another unique skill of Ellenson’s is grabbing defensive rebounds and leading the fast break – again, not the thing you expect of a virtual 7-foot teen.

“He can do that,” Van Gundy nodded. “He can put it on the floor. We’ll have to get more of a feel for his decision-making process if that’s something we want to happen. But for now, I want to see it, so I’m not taking it away from him. His ability to put the ball on the floor, in fact, that’s probably where he’s really special. There just aren’t that many guys his size who can handle the ball and make plays off the dribble like he can.”

It might be a while before Pistons fans get to see all of that. Stan Van Gundy expects it’ll be worth the wait.

Offensively, an excellent quality of shots from ball movement and execution, and defensively, an understanding of switching, tagging players on the weak-side, constant communication and effort.

It's so refreshing to see.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/news/joel-embiid-asked-sixers-pa-announcer-to-introduce-him-as-the-process/

Joel Embiid asked Philadelphia 76ers public address announcer Matt Cord to introduce him as "Joel 'The Process' Embiid,'" according to the Philadelphia Daily News' John Smallwood. This would match Embiid's name on his Instagram account, and it would make a certain portion of Sixers fans deliriously happy.

For the uninitiated: "Trust the Process" has become a rallying cry for Philadelphia fans who believe in former general Sam Hinkie's plan to patiently rebuild through the draft. Former Sixers guard Tony Wroten uttered the words in an interview, and Sixers podcast "The Rights to Ricky Sanchez" popularized it by applying it to Hinkie's approach more generally. While Hinkie and the front office have parted ways, Embiid has continued to earn points with his supporters -- in July, he posted a photo of himself and Hinkie to Instagram with the caption, "THE GOAT #HeDiedForOurSins #TrustTheProcess."

(Yes, "Hinkie died for our sins" has also become a slogan of sorts for that same segment of Philly fans.)

He's fine, his hustle on the court will unfold.

If anything he's probably -TOO- excited & may need to watch himself going into foul trouble which is a huge concern.

I'd say move Rubio. To some extent not a fan of Dunn (but its early). I'd move Dieng for the right deal too, but I like him.

KAT, Wiggins, Bazz, & maybe Lavine are off the table. But I'd move him too if the deal was right.

It goes like this:

Untouchable: KAT
Pretty much untouchable: Wiggins and LaVine
He's not my guy, but I need him to win, cause Dunn is a rookie and Tyus can't defend: Pretty Ricky
My own rookie: Dunn
Cheap talented Euro guy in a postion of need: Bjelly
I'm not sure I want to pay him THAT next year: Dieng
Spare parts: Bazzy, Tyus, Cole Aldrich
Nobody wants them: Hill, Rush
I'll pay you to get him off the cap/roster: Pek, Payne

You're more than likely either under-activating your glutes or have weak glutes, which means your hamstring has to compensate = increased load through your hamstring= hamstring pain.

There's a really really good research piece and subsequent exercise protocol which I'll link up when I'm at my computer.

edit: Something I forgot to mention....if you feel some hamstring pain and aren't in a situation where you can stop or do the glute activation stuff I'll link to, squeeze your quad as hard as you can for 15-20 seconds. The human body has a built-in muscular reciprocal inhibition where the muscle that is opposite of the one firing will be inhibited in order to not interfere with the action of the firing muscle. The quads and hamstrings are one example (another common example is the anterior tibialis and gastrocs/soleus aka the calves....if your calves are tensing up, pull up with with your feet for 15-20 secs or even better, walk on your heels for 10-15 steps...each will activate anterior tib which inhibits/decreases calf activation and therefore tension).

Went to Foreign Exchange last night and stood for four and half hours total. Going again tonight, and I've tried to prepare accordingly: took the day off work, slept late, stretched, lay down for a bit. But something tells me that tomorrow morning I'm going to need a body cast.

SRO show packed with millennials

upon entry i promptly strolled past the main floor and scouted out some prime real estate on the mezzanine level, complete with two leaning options (concrete pillar + waist-high railing)

Problem with the venue I'm going to is that there are few chairs upstairs, but you've basically got to be the first people through the door to get them. And I'm rolling the "40-and-washed" version of crew deep tonight, so I know it's going to be like herding cats to get everyone there. Gotta find something to make it non-excrutiating

I'd have paid good money for any sort of chair, stool, back surgery.

Going to a concert on Tuesday at the Wiltern and I made sure to get those mezzanine seats. Trying to get space on the floor is too much work for me now. It's why I love the Troubdour, it's small so you can chill by the bar and still have a good view of the stage.

Sore all over, dragging ass all day, still haven't left the house.

It wasn't as bad as it could have been, because he went upstairs and leaning against the railing. But it was still lots of standing and felt like it was 95 degrees in there.

It's just about picking and choosing which concerts to go to.

And cutting out SRO venues and shows where the main act doesn't go on until 11 p.m. and midnight is the move.

Wanted him sooooooooooooooo bad for my Sixers, and it seems his pre-season production is gonna have him become at worst case, a 14ppg guy who shoots 45/40/85 once the regular season starts.

At least I can be happy that he'll show off for Dallas instead of Sac town who will be more likely to poop the bed (come oooooooooon draft swap!!!).

Wouldn't mind seeing the Sixers pick him up and let him get some run.

As it stands now, I think Sixers take Archie and the Nets pick up RJ Hunter. Mitch McGary's another guy who's worth a flier on a bad team.

In response to Reply # 212

Ainge likes having athletic guards. I'd guess that he thought RJ's upside was limited and is thinking that James could still develop into a three and D guy who could play either swing spot.

That being said, you aren't wrong. Hunter showed more in a couple of actual games and Young hasn't looked very good when he's gotten minutes.
