"2016 Washington Football Season Post"

Can't believe there isn't a season post.

How are we feeling about this team? I haven't watched not one full preseason game so if somebody has, tell me something.

First game of the season tonight at home against the Steelers. Not feeling like this is gonna be a win.

How ya'll feeling about Josh Norman? Do you like Matt Jones? Think Josh Doctson is gonna play tonight?

So many questions though. First game of the season and I don't feel optimistic or pessimistic.

But here's what I'm looking out for this season.

1. Kirk Cousins, with the pieces in place around him, taking the position and running with it. You don't have to be Drew Brees, just don't end up being Tony Romo. I think those are the two directions he could go. I still believe we just haven't seen enough of him, especially now that the rest of the league is getting film on him.

2. We need to quit messing around and develop a running game. We had the backfield of the future not too long ago (RG3 and Alf) and now here we are 4 years later starting over again. Matt Jones needs to bring it and Jay Gruden has to commit to the running game. The jury is still out for me on both of those ideas.

3. I want to see the defense improve, more than I need to see the offense improve. Curious to see how the front seven performs in general without too much attention placed on youth/talent upgrades. Preston Smith/Sua Cravens notwithstanding. In this league, you have to build from the inside out and it looks like out D-Line is held together by bubblegum and popsicle sticks. I hope the "veterans" they picked up can produce. Also, for me, the jury is still out on Joe Barry.

For tonight's game (vs. the Steelers), I expect a shoot-out. hope we end up on top at the end.

...

my thoughts,

peace.

And they were very wise to not give him a big deal after last season.

He needs to do it for a whole season, and do it against good competition.

- mad penalties

- can't tackle

- can't run

- can't stop the run

- poor QB play

- no adjustments made defensively
(it's Ben and Antonio Brown, I get it. But do SOMETHING)

There's really not a single positive takeaway to be had. Doesn't/shouldn't an overall lack of focus reflect poorly on the coach? They seemed completely unprepared to play that game. What did they do all offseason and in training camp?

Unbalanced playcalling, no defensive adjustments, poor clock management.

I just didn't see much to like outside of DeSean last night.

Can't figure out if Kirk is rusty or if he just sucks. I do know one thing about his game, he can't hit a deep streak to save his life. He was overthrowing the heck out of them deep throws. He missed too many targets. He was one of the reasons for this team's loss today.

Matt Jones ran well today. 4.5ypg is good production. Unfortunately for him he didn't get the ball where it matters, in the redzone.

Josh Norman is what DeAngelo Hall was for this team. A breath of fresh air that can get you turnovers. He produced out there today but unfortunately.....

Bashaud Breeland had another terrible game. He's usually on point with shutting down Dez and today he just didn't have it.

Start Sua Cravens.

Get rid of Licht.

Trent Murphy is not a LB. Keep him up front.

Gruden bombed this game again. All them throws, TO A ROOKIE WHO AIN'T PRACTICED, in the redzone, while you got a back running for 4.5ypc this game??!?!?!?!? Kirk threw 46 times today. You should know by now that you will not win many games with Kirk throwing 46 times. And you decided to pick a defensive coordinator that was part of a team that went a historic 0-16...WTF?!?!?!!? This is how you know its all about you and not about winning. Cause why would you do that? I don't blame Joe Barry for being bad. I blame Gruden for picking him. This season is all on him. All of it. And then you gonna come to the press conference and answer every question with "I don't know".....What a fucking farce.....

Nothing much needs to be said about Joe or McVay. They suck. Period. They aren't being held accountable for their jobs.

GMSM starting to look like Ernie Grunfeld. A man who is just enough competent at his job that the team doesn't completely suck but may not get you to the promised land. Not addressing the D-line and Center positions is unacceptable.

On one hand, not folding to Kirk's demands is looking genius. Kirk probably isn't good and Scot probably knew that. So huge props there of course.

On the other hand, we're woefully undermanned on defense. Norman is the only guy you need to game plan for.

So I don't know what to make of the guy as of today

But I do think the bigger issue is coaching. We have bad coaches

First of all- Joe Barry. Makes little to no adjustments. Relies strictly upon raw talent stepping up. Ain't this the same dude from the 0-16 Lions? I read that statistically he's the worst DC in the history of the league. We really didn't have any other candidates?

Kirky needs to get more reps and relationships with his receivers. Seems like the only guys he can hit deep since he's been here were Santana Moss and Desean as long as he has 10yds on his receiver.

And why not use our other weapons? Jordan Reed and Garcon are being criminally overlooked when they are the best at making tough catches in traffic.

I dunno man.

And it still is weak. Its not a noodle. But his accuracy is awful.

WTF is Gruden doing though during practice? I hope they are practicing what they have seen these last two games. Otherwise Kirk is gonna be in so much trouble.

He was doing those type of throws horribly last year. The difference is he could check down to the stuff he was good at. Not so much now. He should have worked on those throws in the offseason. I do wonder if Gruden has even told him what his biggest weaknesses are.

This is who has always been. It's why he was a 4th round pick. It's why outside of an 8 game run against terrible defenses he has a historically bad turnover ratio (like one of the worst of all time).

The worst thing he's done in the two games this year might actually be all those rushed and missed throws against a 3 man rush when he had hours of time in a clean pocket.

He's capable of playing great. He also panics and makes terrible decisions sometimes. I've felt for a while that his ceiling was basically a Ryan Fitzpatrick.

So don't break the bank on him and in the meantime start looking for the next plan at QB.

They can't score TDs in the red zone once they get there
And they obviously can't do anything on defense

But they do move the ball well. If they could get just one more touchdown per game in the red zone they could be even more competitive. Sure our D blows, but most teams can't play defense anymore, this is the pass-happy NFL in 2016.

And there is the biggest problem. Between the 20s good but unless you have the Bronco' D from last year - beating teams with FGs isn't the way to go.

Kirk is doing the normal Kirk things. 5 yard throws and then YAC. It's the new NFL though and I hate it.

I left the bar today in the 3rd quarter, down 3, with the Browns driving. Why am I here? Sitting in a dark ass room when it's 70 and sunny out? Watching this shit team? Who would be enjoying this? Fuck it, let's go.

Man I watched Louisville/Clemson last night and was thrilled from the minute the Tigers did their bus entrance gimmick.

I can't tell if I'm over the NFL or if I particularly am just over the Redskins. But whichever it is, I've never been so apathetic about my football team in my life. There's receivers wide open on every play. There's a barrage of penalties and bad tackling every game. This is probably the worst defense I've ever seen at the professional level. We've won two games, but only because the Giants committed mad penalties and turned the ball over and the Browns took Isaiah Crowell off the field.

I'm just so whatever about this shit now. And they won today! But the effort is futile. They're *so* far from being a real professional football team and they still have so many more questions about their future than they have answers. Seriously, other than Jordan Reed and Sua Cravens, what other homegrown young talent should I be inspired by? Josh Doctson can't even get on the field (mind you, he was our first round pick taken in what was allegedly the deepest draft for defensive linemen ever)

EDIT: to be clear, I'm not at all mad. But I'm not at all happy either. I'm totally indifferent and can't find a reason to feel one way or another about these goof balls.

Kirk is annoying.

But yeah, I dunno how this team pulls off wins when they don't play as a professional team. College teams are more organized than this team is.

College games at this point do have more appeal overall. More passion. Better offense. And they tackle pretty good too.

This is a bad football team.

And this team is stuck with another week of Barry, McVay and Gruden. None of them are professional coaches at this point. None of them really deserve their jobs and yet they keep getting wins for some odd reason.

This team is actually more talented than the coaches that coach. Frontline defense sucks and inside LBs are horrid but there is some talent in spots on defense. The offense should be absolutely dominant but unfortunately, Kirk is not a great QB. He is mainly adequate and that is enough to score points against a bad team but not against good/great teams.

Kirk is probably gonna get paid, and its gonna be a mistake. He's not even as good as Joe Flacco.

>Kirk is probably gonna get paid, and its gonna be a mistake.
>He's not even as good as Joe Flacco.

Kirk is adequate and totally capable of being a starter in the NFL. I actually think he's been made a scapegoat for some of this team's far more glaring issues, which basically boils down simply to coaching and defense.

You can't ask Kirk Cousins to throw 50 times a game. Kirk Cousins is who he is. His ceiling is Andy Dalton; I would LOVE if Andy Dalton were my quarterback. Cousins is equipped with stellar pass catching weapons sure, but they're only as effective as our attack is balanced. The more throws he's asked to make the more likely it is he's going to throw a pick, it's that simple. That goes for every passer in the league really.

I don't even trip off Cousins picks anymore man. EVERY QUARTERBACK except for literally Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers throws bad picks. Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger, the list goes on - a pick is a pick, they're almost ALL bad picks.

What I find far more unsettling about Cousins is his lack of situational awareness in big spots - holding the ball too long, not seeing wide open receivers altogether, not knowing how much time is left in the game clock or play clock. (I'm telling you, I saw it from the cheap seats in a game last year - Desean Jackson is never NOT open)

A starter can't be so aloof. But even that I think is a reflection of poor coaching to an extant. Gruden was supposed to be the QB soothsayer, but even with his handpicked guy under center Cousins is making mistakes that I would think an alleged quarterback expert could coach out of a guy.

Kirk Cousins turnover ratio is historically bad.

There are turnovers, and then there's Kirk Cousins. Cousins couldn't hold Andy Dalton's jock strap.

Cousins ceiling is Ryan Fitzpatrick.

The coaches being shitty or the team having maybe the worst defense in the league have nothing to do with Cousins.

In fact I appreciate that he is only on a one-year deal and I think Scot knows best.

But it's a big leap from there to "his ceiling is Ryan Fitzpatrick."

Go look at Fitzpatrick's career numbers. He's never had a year—statistically, since you love stats, as good as Kirk had last year, and Fitz has been in the league for twice as long.

But man those folks will yell you down. I don't know why people think he can be a top 10 QB. They did stats and he throws an "Interceptable Pass" every 12 passes. He should have thrown more than he did yesterday.

Also, as mentioned, he has dynamic playmakers. Cousins is the king of the 5 yard pass that goes for 30.

He may be #8 but he is still a problem.

For one, Kirk is rarely accurate in his long bombs unless its a post route. For two, Kirk isn't accurate when he has to assess the field and make a decision rather than quick read and shoot, For three, while there is nothing wrong with throwing short passes all game long, he never really opens up the field enough for a team to be scared of his long passes. And number four, you never really see Kirk audible into another play. His ok as a starter. But he isn't a guy you should invest gobs of money in though.

small sample size + a little luck + a little skill + a lot of screen passes that went for TDs = Kirk 2015.

He struggled against the handful of playoff teams they played last year.

Thought for sure we were losing yesterday.

Make it two dubs against teams with winning records this season (NYG, Bal)—at least they can't trot that stat out any more.

At the Linc for first place next week! This can't be life.

If the defense can upgrade from "bottom 5" to "totally average" this team is a lot better.

Pass rush makes a huge difference.

Kelley looks real good. Like a faster Matt Jones.

Kirk is gonna Kirk. That game was Kirk in a nutshell.

In response to Reply # 72

running is so obviously a last resort with these guys - we either run right after a turnover or when we need to eat up five or more minutes of clock. Why not mix it in sooner? Would you believe last week that we were in 3rd and 1 sis times against the Ravens and passed on all six attempts? You should believe it because that happened. RUN THE BALL YOU'RE ACTUALLY KIND OF GOOD AT IT.

In response to Reply # 74

We keep waiting for Kirk to be the reason they won a game. He finally was. Then the defense happened.

A lot has been made on the radio today about the defense and Matt Jones. The defense did blow and Matt Jones should lose his job. But the defense mostly sucks because they're just not talented enough. And Matt Jones has proven by now that he wasn't worth his third round pick status.

And so I'm looking sideways at Scot this morning. Because say what you will about Gruden's shortcomings - obsessed with passing most notably - he gets the guys to play every week. (There were games under Shanahan where they appeared dead from the first snap)

But Scot is the reason we're saddled with a pedestrian 2nd year running back who fumbles a lot. Scot is the reason this defense is woefully understaffed - Doctson will play less than 50 snaps when all is said and done this season, that first round pick could've gone towards a starting-caliber defensive tackle or lineman.

Talent failed us more than anything yesterday. Matt Jones sucks, Joe Barry sucks. But most culpable is the guy responsible for the talent. Bad loss that could make a big difference in the end.

In response to Reply # 75

Kelley has outplayed him at virtually every step. Yet Jones keeps getting carries.

Maybe Jones was drafted too high but it was only a 3rd round pick and he is replacement level, which is fine.

What is a mystery to me is the defense. Before the year, GMSM and everyone else on the planet knew this defense had few good players and knew Joe Barry sucked (which is partially on Tommy Boy). So what exactly was the plan?

I have a conspiracy theory that GMSM wanted to set up Joe Barry to get fired so they could hire someone better and draft/sign players who fit the new coach, not shitty-ass Barry.

It's not a terrible plan, but I don't know that it's accurate.

Love Garcon, love what we're getting out of Vernon Davis, love how evenly Kirk distributes the ball and gets guys involved, love Rob Kelley stepping up, love love LOVE LOVE LOVE the offensive line play.

loathe the run defense, loathe the huge chunks of yards opponents gain in the air, loathe that against this defense our opponents always have a chance no matter how down they get.

So what's the average of love and loathe? I think it's like. And I really like this team.

call me naive, but I think we can play with anyone.

Got tickets from my job and took my son to see his first football game. He got to see a good one. We did end up leaving in the 4th as he was tired and had school today (he shoudl have taken a nap. I sure did). Still, he enjoyed himself, as did daddy...

When the offense is clicking and everybody is healthy, they are extremely hard to stop. Even if the Packers are seriously depleted in the not so distant past this team would not have exploited their weakness like they did last night. Very encouraging

- Anything can happen in Dallas, we're not afraid of them, but we've got to lock in and tackle. So I don't know if that means Whitner needs to sit, because against Zeke or Dez a missed tackle is a housecall.

- We'll be able to move the ball, it might be a track meet, we just can't get down by 2 scores, because if they start to lean on their line and running game we're sunk.

- Jason Whitten is going to EAT

- I think we might have to trot out some two TE formations to utilize Jordan and Vernon. Fat Rob is going to have a tough job of establishing the run game. We haven't done a great job of it, even on Sunday, that last long run skewed the stats, he had a solid game. We have to get more than that, if we're going to keep their offense off the field.

- I don't think we're outmatched here much, just will we come to play or not.

Kirk is a lot better. A whole lot better. He still has work to do though. I dunno if he always puts the team in the best positions, especially the run game. He might be a small part of the problem there. I'll know Kirk has turned another corner when he audibles more.

Defense needs talent. No if ands or buts about that one. A better DC might be on deck too.

I feel like the lack of talent on defense makes for a convenient scapegoat, but I also don't think Joe Barry is doing the defense any favors either. We get to the quarterback so inconsistenly and guys in the secondary seem out of sorts all the time pre-snap.

I have never seen Breeland take such a dive on defense. He's so smart and he looks so lost out there. I don't believe that Breeland is a lost cause at all on defense. He needs better coaching.

6-5-1. Barely above average. Not sure if this team deserves the playoffs but we'll see. If they can't win three of these next four, they don't deserve it at all.

Also I guess I should just give up on Tommy Boy ever dedicating the team to the run. Doesn't matter how good the run game looks. It's only ever a set up for play action.

Especially against an inferior team on the ropes. A TD on that drive puts the game away, instead a team with a shitty offense finds a way to nearly tie the game. That is how you lose to mediocre teams and don't make the playoffs.

Defense (!) and run game (!) came through in the end.

Also, lol'd the entire game at John Lynch fucking sucking off Joe Barry all game. Defense would fuck up, Lynch was explicitly blaming players not the coach. Even going so far as to say "Barry has had a lot of success in this league."

lol whut? He was LB coach of one of the best defenses in NFL history that featured 3 HOFers in their prime and one of the 10 best linebackers of all time. Like, I get that Barry is Lynch's boy but dude was also the coach of the first team to ever go 0-16!

Came out dead. That's on coaching.
Missed wide open receivers and threw picks. That's on Kirk.

I don't know what to think about who should stay and go. But the whole team sucked today in a game they literally had to have. They're not talented or prepared well enough consistently to ever really contend for anything. Most frustrated I've been by a Skins loss in a long time. Losers.

You interception throwing moron.

Do not under any circumstances pay him $60 mil guaranteed or whatever the going rate is.

You give him an incentive laden contract that allows the team to reasonably break it if Kirk continues to throw back breaking INTs and head one of the worst red zone offenses in the NFL. If he demands a top 5 contract or whatever, take the compensory pick and let his ass walk.

Too much of his career numbers are garbage time or padded against bad defenses or non red zone for anyone to think he's established himself has "one of the best in the NFL."

If and when he does that, I'd be happy to pay him. But as he just proved pretty conclusively over the last few weeks with the playoffs on the line, he ain't there yet.

if there was a way to protect the team against the very real chance that this inconsistent shit is as good as he ever gets (dude will be 29 when next season starts).

But if he wants a ~$70M max deal or whatever, I'd let him walk and move on to the next plan. Or give him some offer that lets another team sign him and give us two first round draft picks.

But you don't marry yourself with MASSIVE *guaranteed* money to a QB just because he's the best you have when the music stops.

If they give him the deal he will likely want and he spends the next few years sucking like he did yesterday or last year versus GB in the playoffs, (or the last few weeks of this season with the playoffs on the line), this franchise will be absolutely crippled for 3 years at least or however long it takes to get his bonus off the books.

This is a real tough situation for the team, but you don't give out cap-sucking contracts based on fear of the unknown.

Edit: to answer your question, if he demands $70M: let him walk and draft someone. Or spend one year with a mediocre vet and draft someone in 2018.

Near same record as last year

Same lingering questions about your quarterback

Same habit of beating bad teams and struggling with competent ones

Same under-talented defense as last year

Last year's squad was basically a 500 team that backdoored its way into the playoffs bullying teams worse than them. It was fool's good, but it also could've served as a huge springboard into a promising future. Instead, the Skins fielded the EXACT same mediocre team - all while their peers in the division got markedly better.

While we openly question whether our fourth round pick quarterback is worth betting on, the Cowboys have one of their own who is a viable MVP candidate in his first year (and, more importantly, an identity of running the ball while we opt for offensive finnesse)

While we openly question why our personnel staff didn't improve our obviously flawed defense, the Giants went out and fixed the glaring problems in their own front seven and drafted in the secondary.

While we openly question how an offense so talented could turn in such uninspired efforts down the stretch, the Eagles sucked and played hard and competitively every week with arguably the worst weapons in the league.

And so, for that, I would clean house of the coaching staff.

With enough talent surrounding Cousins, I do believe you can compete as well as, say,
the Chiefs are competing now. Good weapons, athletes on defense, and a game breaker or two can mask Cousins' occasional warts when they rear their ugly heads. But for failing to better equip this team with enough capable players, Scot McLoughan deserves a heaping pile of blame. His tenure is too early to call a failure, but he has a hand in this year's meltdown and should be held more accountable headed into next season.

Cousins deserves a great deal of blame. With so many opportunities to slam the door on the "does he deserve the money?" debate, he consistently and surprisingly came up
lame at every turn. You must resign him, that's irrefutable. But, more importantly, you must resign him while also covering the team's ass, like Smuts said. If he'll accept a contract of $15-17M per season with incentives and plenty of escape doors, then just do it and immediately start looking to invest resources in other areas of need via free agency. But you must not cave to his demands - I can assure you he knows he needs to stay here more than he'll ever let on.

Gruden and staff deserve the most blame. For never truly committing to the run despite having two Pro Bowlers on your O-line, for asking 4th round journeyman Kirk Cousins to perform like Aaron Rodgers time and again, for his team's repeated committing of costly penalties, for deferring the ball in every game even with a historically bad defense and for them being outscored by an overwhelming margin in every first quarter, and for the general lack of preparation and intensity his team took the field with in repeated "control your own destiny" games...Jay Gruden is the primary culprit for this team's failure.

This team improved in no one area and answered none of its preexisting questions conclusively. That's the result of an over-confident GM, an inconsistent Quarterback, and, most notably, a poor head coach. While our division peers can all head into their respective offseasons feeling there is real momentum leading into their futures, we will only be able to do the same if we recruit an adult to steer this ship. Scot is on notice, and give Kirk one more audition, he's earned at least that. But axe Jay Gruden and company. You've taken their train as far as you can

But he and GMSM need to fix the defense immediately. And make the playoffs, obviously.

Coach 0-16 needs to be fired yesterday.

Kirky and Tommy Boy need to fix the red zone within the first 8 games next year and stop padding stats.

just say you want big fat paychecks even though you know you're not worth it. don't put this on future qbs and the deals they may or may not get. be honest, dude. you're not worth 25+ mil/year and you know it, but you still want it.

i mean damn, that's what we've had out there for 2 years anyways. a serviceable qb, not an elite qb. he's good, and i agree he's our best option, but not at the price he's going to demand. he's not and will probably never be the reason we win games. and if we don't spend on the defense then we'll win even fewer.

i'm on the fence too, but ultimately don't think he's worth 25+ mil a year. shit, get tyrod in there if/when he becomes available.

Picking him as the best option for 2017 also means you're committing to him for 3 or 4 years at minimum.

Or you tread water at QB for one season while you draft one this year or in 2018.

Edit: I don't know if he can be franchised again, but if so I'd consider doing that and basically giving him and Gruden one more year to win a playoff game.

But you're only allowed one franchise tag player.

Everybody keeps saying the QB field is rather barren but the offense doesn't require a superstar. The way the NFL is going (which I hate) is a bulk of passes being under 10 yards.

If you pay him $25 million under the tag next year, what are the chances he takes a pay cut?

If the 'Skins hitch their wagon to him you'll basically get year-after-year of 8-8, with the occasional 9-7 and KC will do enough to get people excited but will always make the backbreaking bad decision.

it was actual downfield passing.

But we saw the limitations of that if the offense constantly stalls in the red zone.

I hate that short passing game shit. That is one of the reasons I liked Cam and RG3. They can swing deep passes pretty accurately. But the defensive linemen are so fast and strong now you don't have time to swing a lot of deep passes.

Kirk is definitely game manager material with a few wows. No different than Joe Flacco. Part of the problem with Kirk is he has some all world talent, especially at WR and on the line and he manages to perform average to above average. The other issue is the horrible defense that this team touts. Can't depend on the defense to win many games. If the defense upgrades to really good next year, then I have no issues with paying Kirk.

This team is in such a pickle though. And actually, if the D was even slightly better, Kirk would probably be getting his money. If Flacco can get it, Kirk is on that level. But I'd let him walk and see what we got in Sudfeld I guess....*shrug*

He'll get the big one-year salary but then he's without question gone next season and the entire year will be played under this cloud of the team not having committed to him—it will be awkward all around.

But also his situation is pretty obvious. Any level headed person, whether fan or player, should be able to see that he's good but not consistent, and has not gotten it done in the playoffs for two seasons in a row, therefore can't be given a big contract, YET.

I don't know. The lack of commitment was ok this year. It's not ideal, but I'd do it for one more year.

and i wish the GMs of other teams were as rational as we seem to be. Unfortunately, they are ultimately the ones that are setting his market value, so someone will want to give him that "elite" money. It's why it's such a conundrum

This is the right move. Obviously the talent sucks, but also obvious is that Barry & Co weren't maximizing or developing anyone. Some players like Breeland appeared to be regressing.

GMSM & Tommy Boy need to improve the defense in 2017 or clean house. The whole house.

Like - we lose Kirk, it's basically saying that we're sort of rebuilding again. Which is not the worst, as long as we all believe that we're making progress.

Re-sign Kirk to big $$ and keep one of Garcon or DeSean and the front office is saying that this is our window, like the next two seasons we need to not only make the playoffs but advance in the postseason.

Letting go of Barry today is another sign that we believe the window is now...also, since Gruden is apparently in charge of picking his successor, it's an ultimatum for Jay, who I don't think will be extended before the end of next season. If he picks another dud, he's gone.

I feel like there's such good weapon depth on this offense (Really hope Doctson pans out) and the OL is mostly pretty young. I think we're in an era of the NFL where you can plug in a rookie or 2nd year QB, especially with a system and roster in place, and he can do well.

Kirk & Tommy Boy definitely have something going, but as we've all said, it's all about the price.
