Acute impact is obviously completely different bc you can't control those forces but a non-contact, let alone a routine drop back resulting in a knee dislocation...imo that speaks to a completely to the level of that medical team. There's no damn excuse for that.

Possibly season-ending.

If this is what the head coach is saying before an official diagnosis, there's zero chance he plays this season.

Obviously a fucking travesty that this occurred and I'm hoping for his full recovery.

What really fucking irritates me is that this level of injury on this type of movement should never ever fucking happen...it absolutely speaks to the quality of the Vikings medical team. Inexcusable, what a joke and such a cotdamn shame.

medical staff could have prevented something like this?

I really don't understand how an injury like this could occur in a non contact drill but I also don't understand how a doctor/medical staff could prevent something like this from happening or know that this might happen?

The only other time I have seen something this gruesome happen in a non contact play is when that kid (sorry, can't remember his name at the moment) on Louisville basketball snapped his leg on a pull up jumper during March Madness a few years ago.

In response to Reply # 30

An extreme injury on a common movement without any acute impact absolutely screams a structural imbalance, one that would absolutely get noticed on asymmetry and functional screening. The problem: there's only a handful of teams which actually utilize prevention screening when it comes to their players.

If you're part of a medical team and you're not utilizing prevention screening (and it's not expensive, it's basically a Y-balance test combined with dual leg and single leg functionality tests combined with observation and manual examination), then you're a part of the damn problem. There's ZERO reason that an athlete should dislocate a kneecap on a common movement, that spesks to a serious deficit in that medical staff's ability to diagnose movement and structural imbalances. Shit is unacceptable man.

If you've seen the shit I've seen when it comes to laziness and essentially passing the risk to the players, at the highest levels of sport, from MD's to PT's to AT's, you'd understand why I'm angry. The level of care and level of thought is overall an embarrassment and the ones who suffer are the clients.

which is common for most people who do most things. But
stop it, like, now.

The Homo sapien knee is shitty. They fall apart. Like, a lot.
And they do so with "screening," or without screening.

There is no "screening" for a monstrously freak injury like
this, and for you to openly blame the medical staff RIGHT
AWAY with NO DETAILS is insane.

And I'm not really sure Sanchez and co are a marked improvement over Shaun Hill. Plus they'd have to learn a new playbook on the fly, while Hill is already familiar with it.

We definitely need to bring in someone, because as of right now Joel Stave is the only other healthy QB on the roster (I had almost forgot about Taylor Heinicke hurting himself before training camp started.)

Meanwhile we got the uninformed clowning a dude that clearly has more first hand factual information than the rest of the board combined. smh

training staff. like, is there an imbalance in dude's training regimen (or physique, that could be mitigated by workout regimen)?

i know from researching knee injuries in womens' sports that there are factors which predispose them to having more, and more serious knee issues, some are based upon physiology (angle of hips, legs, etc), and some can be addressed via training (strengthening the quads as well as the hamstrings, for example).

it's an interesting intellectual sidebar, but i'm SERIOUSLY bummed out for teddy, and pray that he recovers fully and doesn't lose out in the long run due to this.

peace & blessings,

There are key reliable indicators for lower extremity injury risk, most of them having to do with leg to leg asymmetry and mechanics during weighted loading into the leg (which speaks to the bio-mechanics and kinetic chain of the lower extremity, which would then have to be examined and treated). I've seen these indicators missed so many times, seen these indicators not even screened for so many times....so when an extreme event occurs from a routine cause, I don't think "shit just happens", I think "what was missed".

I'm speaking on this because this is an extreme injury from a common movement. I've never spoken like this after an ACL injury because there's less force required for that to happen..the knee jt itself is very stable so for it to dislocate requires a high force trauma which most commonly coincides with tearing of the ACL, MCL, and PCL. For that to happen on a planting of the left leg is not some mystery, *shrug* shit happens type deal..that's exactly the type of attitude much of the medical profession uses to remain status quo.

Yeah, this seems like a professional beef you have with the
MDs.

It's unethical to let that play out on a message board with
people who are uninformed.

There is NO basis for you to BLAME the medical staff.

That might be the stupidest thing I've ever read. Catastrophic
knee injuries happen with common movements.

That's where the swift and violent blame comes from.

I am familiar with this beef: Trainers and people with
his skill set don't think the medically-trained people
are armed with the proper skill set to prevent these
types of injuries. It's an old professional beef, and it
plays out in many arenas.

It's stupid because there is NO basis to BLAME the staff
for a SINGLE instance like this. NONE.

If he thinks MDs surgeons shouldn't be in command of the
staff, fine. But to let that drive this BLAME incident isn't
cool.

He clearly has no idea that medical community doesn't simply mean MDs. Further, each field within the medical community has a certain scope for which they are best trained for. Athletic trainers for on-site acute medical treatment, physical therapists for diagnostic and musculoskeletal/neurological movement systems, MDs for their respective area, etc etc.

I have a lot of angst with the medical profession at large, that doesn't simply mean MDs. I've done my due diligence to surround myself and work with a team of MDs, ATs, personal trainers, and PTs who are focused on quality of health care for individuals, some of which is prevention screening and ongoing research into prevention screening tools.

It's not a beef with MDs, you assumed that's what medical community meant which completely shows your ignorance so go show your ass somewhere else.

LA2Philly has a really good job, and people who do that
work get paid excellent money precisely because we don't
have a great grasp on how to truly prevent them. Some knees
seem more prone to them. Women seem more prone to ACLs for
some obvious reasons. But there is no slam dunk basis to
BLAME the medical staff for PREVENTING a CATASTROPHIC,
random knee injury.

This isn't head injuries. Knees have been exploding for
centuries, in large part because knees are a pathetic piece
of biological engineering, especially for rigorous athletic
practices like the ones Homo sapiens invented.

Combine LA2Philly's actual knowledge of this world with the well-established fact that NFL medical staffs are incentivized to keep players on the field at all cost, and I completely buy his conclusion.

I don't know anything at all about this field, but it seems logical that these "freak accidents" usually happen in real life because we don't have access to the constant medical care and pre-screenings that players receive/should be receiving. So even if it turns out LA2Philly did jump the gun on his conclusion (and maybe he did), it checks most of the logic boxes for this uninformed person.

There's a lack of knowledge when it comes to the topic of prevention and preventative screening in the medical professional community, so I don't presume to have that opinion accepted and I understand the reaction.

The reason I commented on this injury is the contrast between common action (planting his left foot) and extreme reaction (his knee dislocating, which means his ACL, MCL, and PCL are also likely torn). The knee jt is very stable and requires high force trauma to produce dislocation...unless of course that knee joint is being destabilized in the first place or less resistant to force due to other mechanical factors (like for example: muscle imbalance or lack of muscle activation during single leg stance, etc etc...I put those into laymans terms but you get the point) which should be picked up on a prevention screening because that level of weakness or instability etc would scream out to a trained eye.

I wish I could say "oh shit just happens" because it would save me a lot of grief and tension about the medical community, but we know the mechanics of the human body and we have reliable tools to guard against extreme injuries from low force movements. I very well could be blaming the wrong group in this situation but somewhere within that organization, key indicators were missed, never looked for in the first place, or someone (and this doesn't have to be the medical staff) didn't listen or didn't understand the risk.

Doesn't sound like a stretch at all, honestly.

Maybe I'm just a cynic, but the "shit happens" argument sounds like *more* of a stretch than someone overlooking, through pure or willful ignorance, the warning signs.

this could have been preventable, and there could have been indicators that the vikings medical people failed to pick up on.

but LA2P, at least in his initial responses, seemed to be saying that this was DEFINITELY what happened. and with the little information that's been made publicly available thus far, i just don't see how anyone who hasn't personally examined bridgewater can make that case. (see: dr. drew / HRC)

it's got nothing to do with his professional expertise, i know dude knows his shit.

It seems he's rowed back on the "definitely" and gone more towards "strong suspicion." Which I'm fine with.

I also think some message board talk about a possible reason for an actual occurrence isn't on the level of a professional doctor with an audience giving a damaging public diagnosis to a presidential candidate. But I get the larger point you're trying to make.

yes, we know it was a non-contact injury that occurred when he planted during a routine drop-back. however, until we hear from tb, we won't know the real story (esp regarding his training, conditioning, examinations, etc).

i'm not clowning you or your knowledge/opinion regarding nfl athlete staff/trainers, but i agree with the general sentiment that this was a rush to judgement.

It will be exactly what cats want to hear: "random devastating injury to his knee".

The easiest way to keep people placated is to give them a passive mentality and that's especially doable in non-transparent fields (medical, financial) which means the system stays exactly the same and those professionals continue to get paid without having to improve.

To football related head-truama. March of fucking 2016. Ain't shit gonna come out about this injury or any non-contact injuries which speaks openly or honestly on medical team deficits.

For example, I know for a fact that the Broncos organization, which is considered to be one of the best when it comes to sports medicine in the league, only does full bio-mechanical screens AFTER an injury has already happened and then attempts to address the found deficits. Will that info ever be released to the general public...of course not.

later the tests confirm what he suspected.

When you go to a doctor and describe what happened/what you feel they usually diagnose you right then and there and allow the tests to confirm what they suspected. (with alot of illnesses all they do is guess and prescribe you some stuff anyway and see if it works)

I'm sure the team doctors already have their suspicions by watching an injury and talking to the player about what they feel before any testing is done.

I thought it was an MCL tear (which it was) but there was also an ACL tear involved.

Looking back at that injury I realized the mistake I made...1/3 of the ACL's job is to limit rotation of the knee and there was a rotary component involved in that injury. That was an oversight and mistake on my part.

Speaking to your edit, as a side-note: That process you described is actually one of the biggest issues with medical diagnosis - chasing diagnoses with inherent confirmation bias rather than doing a full exam every time. During my time in school, I was taught in the former...try to come up with some diagnoses and then test them, but that imo is almost like a dog chasing its own tail. That type of thinking becomes even more burdensome to the medical system when the tests you are performing are not valid or reliable and cost a lot of money. However, during my first rotation I was introduced to a methodology (International academy of orthopedic medicine, or IAOM) that used a standard manual exam for each body part which allows for a full data set every single time. That's the basis of my treatment and why a large number of my patients are those who have been in the system for years, and we can improve their pain, function, and performance very quickly by understanding the actual anatomy which is affected and how that relates to their problem.

While "shit happens", it may very well be a slew of injuries that the medical setup in the NFL is just not able to handle/deal with/aid with. For a non-contact injury to happen that not only fucks someone up, but puts someone at risk for amputation? Sheeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit...

The NFL's pettiness with head trauma is the pandora's box of possibilities that their med staff will get by with bare minimums, shit sports in general seems to be that way sometimes.

...ven with my boy Teddy down for at least a year, this division is still gonna be between my Vikes and the Pack.

Vikes team as a whole is structurally sound, and improved since last year, so even without Teddy taking it to the next level, this team will be making a run...

...im calling my shot now even before the first real game this season.

In all seriousness though, shitty news but not expected considering the severity of his injury. Just hoping he can back to every day functionality.

Would be really interesting to evaluate his skeletal structure, I'd wager he has something outside standard variance throwing his force vectors out of whack.
