"KD vs. Kyrie jump shooting contest...an ode to mechanics"
Fri Jul-22-16 08:48 AM by Basaglia

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6wxY_ADdU0

I don't know who won, because I got exhausted after the first 6 minutes of watching this, but those dudes have near perfect strokes. Some comments say it was 67 to 65 Kyrie.

-Both have one-motion mechanics. clean.

-KD's release is higher and quicker.

-Kyrie's guide-hand is insanely consistent, but it propels forward along with his shooting hand's wrist snap. I have never noticed that in 8 years of watching that dude. That would interfere with most shooters' accuracy, but it works for him. KD's guide hand is pretty as hell...stay perfectly still for the most part. However, it can flare out now and then.

-KD trusts his mechanics more than Kyrie. When he misses, he shoots with the same intensity. If Kyrie misses too many in a row, he will make a slight adjustment to his base, whether making it more of a set shot and actually jumping into the shot.

-KD don't shoot well at all when he gets tired. Kyrie remains pretty much the same.

still tho...i wouldn't be concerned about anything with brandon right now. he's 18 and already this good.

i know i ain't the only one who's noticed that he's bordering on having a two-motion shot. i'm sure the lakers know. it can be fixed. but, do you wanna bother his shot tryna fix it?

two-motion Js ain't all bad...bird had one.

From foot placement to square hips to elbow angle (varus-valgus angle) to eye trajectory to follow through with his 2nd and 3rd digits. His height and release point allow him to get away with a hitch because he doesn't need to generate as much force since the ball is already rim level or higher.

All those factors allow him to mitigate the increased variance associated with a 2-motion release.

In response to Reply # 9

I'll have to watch when I get home, and I feel weird typing this out, but I noticed this season that Steph seems to generate the majority of his power for his outside shots through his hips, in particular the deep three pointers. I say that because after he releases his shots, his body nine times out of ten will be off center at his hips. It's a lot more pronounced than I've seen from any other shooter since the lower body parts for most shooters are not as off balanced as I seen from Steph.

I'm typing all this out from memory and without the benefit of watching a Youtube video to help freshen my memory.

The only thing that changed on his deeper shots was his wrist velocity, he's able to quiet all variables to an extent that has never been seen before....consistent setup and mechanics on every single jumper.

A big part of Steph's and Seth's jumpers is that while growing up Dell limited their shooting to ranges only where they could keep their form.

His body is very off center at the hips after he releases his shot on threes; much more so than dudes with traditional releases like say Klay or old school Ray Allen.

In response to Reply # 25

-Klay spreads his legs out for balance & doesn't have wasted motion
-Ray was the ultimate jump-shooter who generated power form his legs, -Curry basically shoots a set shot which is why he uses his hips & has a compact footwork

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

I feel like I saw it more this season, than last. It was almost like most of his shots he had this motion where *I believe* his right hip would end up pointing towards the basket as he landed. Feels like it was really pronounced in the playoffs...or that could be because I watched every playoff game...and watched games much more intently.

From my amateur-ass AAU Coach point-of-view watching this, it's because Kyrie gets "more legs" into his shot than KD. So KD upper-body will tire quicker and he is probably making micro overcompensations, changing the backspin ever so slightly and maybe flattening the shot out a bit. That said the top half of his shot is beautiful, like Ken-Griffey Jr swing beautiful. The mechanics, high-release point, perfect extension.

>swing beautiful. The mechanics, high-release point, perfect
>extension.

all true. KD has a bit more going with his windup as well. he has a left-to-right sweep doing into his release point that could be cleaned up just a bit.

but, the man shoot over 40% for his career from distance. what do we know?

Blake/KD are two guys who consistently make mistakes in the playoffs when they get fatigued. Chris Paul is ALWAYS injured & WestBrick just goes into super hero-ball mode.

so their drop in TS% is the same, except KD's is still almost 90 points higher than Iverson's.

In response to Reply # 32

Gm 4s: If a team were to be down 2-1, a win away from home would swing their odds from 30.7% to 55%. A very significant 24.3% increase. They would have a 55% chance to win even with the series tied.

2013: Down 2-1
-vs. Grizz: 10/27 (TS: 47%) --> Loss w/ him scoring 5 points while going 2/13 in the 4th quarter & OT

2014: Down 2-1
-vs. Grizz: 5/21 (TS: 31%) --> Won b/c Reggie Jackson carried him on his back, no wonder Reggie has been throwing shade at him ever since.

Gm 5s: When a series is tied at 2-2, winning Game 5 becomes imperative with an 82 percent chance of advancing. In NBA history, the winner of Game 5 is 147-33 to go on to win the entire series.

2014: All series tied 2-2
-vs. Grizz: 10/24 (TS: 48%) --> Loss
-vs. Clips: 6/22 (TS: 49%) --> Won b/c Russ went off
-vs. Spurs: 11/21 (TS: 54%) --> Blown the fuck out thanks to the MVP imploding in the 3rd quarter then getting benched in the 4th.

2016:
-vs. Spurs: 8/21 (TS: 48%) --> Won b/c the refs gave him two bogus FTs & Russ kept the team afloat hitting hero-ball shots.

Gm 6s: When a home team is leading a series 3-2, they have an 84% chance of winning the sereis.

2016: Up 3-2
-vs. Duds: 10-31 (TS: 41%) --> lost & got a corny tattoo.

Basically, in the most pressure packed game of every competitive series he has been part of since Harden left town he has been pretty underwhelming. Dude is a front-runner as evident by how he was hi-fiving everyone at the end of Gm 5 in the WCF then reverted to yelling at his teammates when the pressure got to him in Gm 6/7.

>so their drop in TS% is the same, except KD's is still
>almost 90 points higher than Iverson's.

I'm talking about how Durant can't sustain HIS OWN regular season play. Otherwise comparing a 6'0" shooting guard's scoring efficiency to a 7ft wing doesn't makes sense. Otherwise, Stackhouse had a better TS% than MVP Iverson when he finished 2nd in scoring & led the league in TOTAL points back in '00-'01.

Iverson won MVP despite having a TS% of 51% b/c he puts pressure on the defense even when he misses because he ain't out there jacking up mid-range shots. Not to mention Durant struggled to even get free against Tony Allen when WestBrick was out in 2013 & he had to carry the offense like Iverson.

MVP Iverson:
-Regular season: 51%
-Postseason: 48% (Dude was beat to a pulp that he had to miss Gm 6 of the ECF)
-Difference: -3%

MVP Durant:
-Regular season: 63%
-Postseason: 57%
-Difference: -6%

The only series in his career Durant had to play without Westbrook/Harden he had a TS of 53%, including going 7/34 & committing 8 turnovers in the final 5 quarters of the series for a grand total of 26 pts. They called him "Mr. Undependable" for a reason.

Since 2013 aka the post Harden era, Durant's scoring efficiency in the postseason has been on par w/ Paul George aka the guy you claim jacks up bad shots.

Carmelo postseason TS% as a Knick is basically the same as Iverson's career postseason TS% despite him not be an undersized wing.

It's not a mystery that AI is a low efficiency scorer & muphucka was held up w/ glue by the time he got to the postseason. But congratulations for digging out that nugget two decades later.

Durant didn't play in the postseason when he was injured & his only excuse was that he got tired when he had to carry the offensive load in 2013: http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/playoffs/2013/05/16/oklahoma-city-thunder-vs-memphis-grizzlies-game-5-score-kevin-durant/2164751/

"Durant had clearly worn down by the end of the series, and the Thunder, too. he didn't get much help Wednesday from teammates — the Thunder shot just 37% — but he was finally unable to carry them."

Apparently you lack reading comprehension.

Let's looked at Durant's TS% differential in the post-Harden era:

'12-'13: 57-63: -6
'13-'14: 57-63: -6
'15-'16: 54-63: -9

AI's career: 48-51: -3

Trying to use a 140 postseason game to claim someone is a CAREER double-double guy & using 48 games to labeled someone as a POSTSEASON choker are two different things. There are plenty of folks who have been labeled as a postseason chokers while playing less than 50 postseason games for their career: Lowry/DeFrozen

Chris Paul barely played 50 games when he was labeled as Choke-P3 despite having a HIGHER TS% in the postseason.

The only superstar with a similar TS% drop-off as Durant for the past 3 postseason is none other than Karl "Mail-Man-don't-deliver-on-Sundays" Malone & he only had a 5 pt dropoff for his career. Basically, KD/Russ were on their way to become Stockton/Malone.

Even the Choke Brothers (Lowry/DeFrozen) haven't dropped off as bad during their past 3 cumulative postseasons (2014-2016).

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

In response to Reply # 52

He shot 41% in '14-'15 when he was healthy & playing off the ball a lot b/c of LeBron.

He also won the 3 point contest in 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gx3xCYBK_Vs

For comparison, Curry shot below 40% in his first two postseasons while Kyrie is at 44% on basically the same amount of attempts.
