YOU HAVE NOT EXPERIENCED JOY UNTIL YOU'VE WITNESSED ZINGIS AND PLUMDOGG ON A FAST BREAK, TWO GANGLY WHITE ATHLETES BOUNCING DOWN A COURT AT TOP SPEED, LEAVING SLOW-ASS TRADITIONAL BIGS IN THE DUST, BOTH OF THEM CATCHING LOBS FIFTEEN FEET OFF THE GROUND AND SIMULTANEOUSLY SLAMMING THEM DOWN, CREATING A SONIC BOOM THE LIKES OF WHICH MSG HASN'T EXPERIENCED IN AGES.

PHIL JACKSON MAKING CHAMPIONSHIP CALIBER MOVES. POWER. LEADERSHIP. INTEGRITY. SUPPORTING THE TROOPS. ZEN MASTER MEETS ZEN MARSHALL. AMERICA.

what does this mean for the Knicks, Frank? I don't watch college basketball, so I dunno who this is outside of him having prior brothers that player for Duke.

Please try to be as objective as possible.

He's got an NBA body and NBA athleticism... I don't think anyone would question this. He's over 7 feet, really fast for his size, long arms, and can jump with the best of them. He's got a nose for the glass (one of the better offensive rebounders in college ball last year) and knows how to time putback dunks and alley-oops well. He's also a terrific *team* player-- he passes out after a rebound nicely, strong character guy, etc. Sets vicious picks.

Offensively, there's really nothing there-- if it's not a layup or putback, it's not going in. Think Tristan Thompson but worse on that end. He won't force anything up though-- he's a high IQ dude who knows how his bread is buttered. He times his blocks well, but defending anywhere outside of in front of the rim is also a non-starter too. There's a reason he wasn't drafted despite everything I said in the first paragraph-- he'll give you nothing on offense beyond putbacks and is only a body down low on defense, which, in today's NBA, means less and less.

However, it's not impossible to imagine his upside-- he didn't play much til last year at Duke, and I could see him making some improvements as a pro the same way his brother Miles did. He's fast enough that he could learn to move his feet better on defense, potentially-- the shot is broken, but there's a long list of bigs who were valuable teammates because they rebounded and defended well.

In short, expect a backup center at best, a relief man for the starting big who will be a strong character teammate, a high-energy floor runner in transition, and a guy to gather offensive boards and kick them back out to shooters for 15 mins per game. At worst, he washes out, but as far as undrafted free agents go, you won't find many with that combo of size and athleticism, so it's worth the risk.

If he develops more defensive skills, sounds like he'll be a decent commodity given his size. Not too many seven footers around these days.

Hopefully the fact he wasn't drafted will keep him humble so he'll continue to improve.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I won't deny that he's a goober, but I'm totally unsurprised that a high-energy kid with that size, speed, and bounce got a guaranteed deal. It's a low-cost flier on raw talent. He either makes good and he's a bargain, or he doesn't and it's a write-off. Either way, definitely worth the signing.

I actually love this situation for Plumlee too. They could use bigs to rebound, set picks, and hustle on D. Still needs to improve some, but it's a roster that could use someone like him.

I'm surprised Layman was drafted, despite the fact that he used to get lotto/mid-first buzz. If his name was Jakob Laymanovic and he played in Croatia, maybe he'd have been drafted higher. *shrug*

... is that Hernangomez is more of a face-the-basket PF with wing potential, and I imagine that early on he'd be likely to backup Zingis and maybe Melo. His game differs from Plumlee's, and I don't think they'd cut back on a heralded Euro prospect's minutes for an undrafted Plumlee anyway, lol.

I was talking about Juan. Who was drafted by the Nuggets, not the Knicks. Whoops. lol. My bad.

The other dude does seem like more of a center. Plumlee is the faster, more explosive player-- this dude seemed stronger and more polished. I can't imagine Hernangomez wouldn't get first crack at the minutes-- Plumlee's more of an energy guy, ideal for a bench role (if he makes it that far). But yeah, as you said, NBA bodies don't grow on trees, so throwing some of them money and hoping they develop makes total sense. I don't know Euro players nearly as well as college guys, so my analysis there is mostly just YouTube watching. It'll be interesting seeing if Hernangomez comes over and plays Summer League.

The two SGs on the Knicks Summer League roster-- Ron Baker and Marvelle Harris-- I know very well. Harris is not a very good shooter, but he's good off the dribble and strong at penetration. He's strong in general-- long arms, good burst. He's an ideal Summer League potential guy, but ultimately I'm not sure a guy who can't shoot will stick unless he becomes a dynamite defender. The tools are there... but he wasn't a great defender this year, honestly.

Baker, however, I love-- I thought at one point that he had first round potential. Not a great athlete, but he's a terrific shooter, elite hustler on the court, and makes up for his lack of athleticism with effort on the defensive end. Long arms (6'9.5), strong upper body, really good passer, and just a winner overall-- Wichita State was stellar during his tenure. Out of the undrafted kids, I like his odds to stick-- wouldn't surprise me if he made the Knicks roster.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Just read that the Knicks waived Marshall Plumlee today.

Here's a link if folks need proof: http://www.newsday.com/sports/basketball/knicks/knicks-waive-marshall-plumlee-1.13787091

Despite the Chappelle's Show reference I initially made, I didn't mean to clown Plumlee getting waived. His contract didn't hurt the Knicks a ton and more importantly, this is being done to make room for Hardaway Jr, which is a terrible move for so many reasons.
