Jun 22nd 2016

The drives to the basket in traffic.
His rookie year?! Man.
That 7 game series against Boston!
The MVP year?

Definitely gonna miss dude.
I get why he's leaving, but I didn't want it to happen.

And now he's getting dumped over to NYC.

Still, given what they're giving up, it's not a bad gamble for the Knicks. Calderon is done, Grant is solid but is an average starter at best, and Lopez is a nice big man but not really all that great (and I think he gets paid a lot.)

Dwight in the media capitol of the world wondering why he isn't getting as many shots as Porzingis, 'Melo, or Rose seems like a disaster.

You never take the L when it's time to.

Derrick Rose far and away outplayed any expectations for him and became NBA MVP. That would have been a great moment to say ok I was wrong about him. You waited till he was hurt and popped shit using Deng as an excuse somehow.

Same deal with Curry to the Nth degree. I think I even pointed out how wrong you were about him and iirc your response was along the lines of "duh, nigga". Now suddenly Kyrie vs Curry is alive again.

This is just like people claiming an asterisk on the Warriors title in 2015, using the 73 win season and road the finals as a requirement for them to win WITHOUT CONCEDING OK THE'YRE CHAPIONS WITH 73 WINS AND BACK TO BACK FINALS TRIPS LEMME STFU I WAS WRONG ALL ALONG. Zero credibility.

If you just eternally lay in the cut waiting for a W to emerge from the smoldering heap of an L you aren't even worth engaging.

Have fun tarding out.

2. It's funny that you don't care about teams or franchises but speak to fans of teams in those terms. You want to have these conversations with no skin in the game, no horse in the race.

As a sports fan/gambler/man with a dick and two balls I can't relate.

So weird to see the Knicks and Bulls make a trade, much less a trade that signals a major move for the Bulls.

I wonder if Phil was the impetus for this or if this was initiated by Dolan. Also wonder if the Bulls were shopping Rose around or if the Knicks and other teams were initiating offers. I have an idea as to the answer to that question, but I'm curious none the less.

Also, if the Bulls have Lopez, is he going to remain on the roster or is he trade bait for future moves? I'm mainly asking because I'm curious if Lopez stays, is this the end of Gasol in the Red and Black.

Not too optimistic given Rose' injury problems, but obviously this is an upgrade in terms of point guards the Knicks have had for the past 5-10 years.

I know Rose is beloved, and some people may think he could get back to All-Star caliber...

... but I think Grant is a good starter-caliber prospect who fits Hoiberg's system beautifully, and RoLo, another guy who fits the system beautifully, can do well filling the center gap the next two years while they find the long-term solution.

Comes down to what you think Rose can still do, obviously.

It's a solid trade either way. Leaves me wondering what the Bulls do next. Stick with Mirotic, Taj, and Portis at the 4? Spend their 20 million on Parsons or another SF?

I feel like they could build a solid Eastern Conference team around Butler but Gar will have to work some magic to get back to contending.

I know what u "meant"......I'm just saying, STOP it.....

If Grant turns out to be a starting caliber player I will be happy as all hell...But living in NYC, and being subjected to watching Knicks games I saw little from dude to suggest he would be a starting PG on a playoff team......

In response to Reply # 35

Well I for one am shocked!

Rookie guards struggle with their shot way more often than not as a rookie-- but he's clearly a good shooter (shot over 40% from 3 his junior year of college, shot nearly 80% from the stripe last year). I loved what I saw from him in college his last two seasons, and I'm not really discouraged by a merely-okay rookie season on a bad team.

Bulls weren't gonna get *proven* young commodities for Rose, anyhow.

and the Bulls had to throw in Holiday as well? He had a great year and fit perfectly in the system.

Said it in April and I'll be saying it for the next couple of years: This team is fucked. I want everybody involved with the team, from the owner down to almost all of the players, to be fired.

Good shooter, can put the ball on the floor, makes the right decisions, has great length, is a capable defender, and isn't afraid of big moments. He's basically Tony Snell but not bitch made. We should've tried to unload Snell instead. Holiday has been in the league for a while but it seemed like he was ready to become a starter if given the opportunity. You'll like him if he gets playing time.

The loss of Rose, while understandable, is hard for Bulls fans but giving Holiday away is just pouring salt in the wound. Fuck BarfPacks.

>Good shooter

... that Holiday was a bad shooter for his entire career, including college, until that quarter-season he played with the Bulls. He was undrafted for a reason and has played with four teams in five years for a reason.

Maybe he was worth keeping... but he's been tossed in as an afterthought to several trades... for a reason. Just saying. Not discrediting what he did last year-- maybe that's how he is now and he just magically turned it on... but there's also a good chance he'd regress to the mean next year.

Snell does suck, though; I agree there.

Both have enough range to not clog it up, Dat Zingis covers for some of Gasol's defensive liabilities, I just wonder if one ball is enough for Melo/Rose/Pau/KP.

Porzingis has to show and prove he can play for a full 82 game season before I have full confidence in his defensive abilities like that.

They get a marketable player in Rose. Even if he sucks or gets hurt early in the year, they got rid of a bad contract with years left on it and they get a guy with one year left on his deal who will sell some tickets before the season starts.

I guess I understand Grant and Lopez for the Bulls but for Rose?

I dunno how I feel about this. I felt like Rose 'might' go but I thought they'd angle for more or just let him walk next summer.

We've lost 2 starters and a defensive anchor in less than 2 months.

Rebuild.

I think I'm gonna start a preemptive..."I would like to see Jimmy Buckets get some help" post.

74. "Who else would be going after Rose?"
In response to Reply # 72

A competent albeit overpaid (but not that overpaid given the bumps people will be getting this offseason) starting center and a promising young PG who could be a serviceable starter is probably the best offer out there.

PG is a loaded position and how many people want to give up a lot for Rose to then have to risk re-signing him, which itself is a risk given his injury history.

If you don't think the Rose/Butler duo is ever going to gel, you kind of have to make a move now. Even if Rose did well in the first half of the season, his value would be lower since he'd only be signed for the second half of the season.

He's 21 mil off the books next summer and Taj is expiring too.

Why fill that up with a washed, a retread and a shakey rookie?

Hell, if you're going to go full on rebuild, send Rose + #14 somewhere for a higher pick in this years draft (I like most of the highly rated G's in this years draft more than Grant as a prospect) and a retread C.

I dunno...just seemed like they were trying to move him because he was jaded about playing for the Bulls and they wanna let Jimmy run the show.

Noah + Rose out = new regime in. Hoiberg and Jimmy are at the helm.

Especially since opposing teams would either have to give up their cap space to eat Rose's deal or ship out talent. New Orleans likely isn't giving up Jrue and the #6 for Rose and #14. At best, you get Rudy Gay and #8 for Derrick and #14 and I'd rather have Lopez and Grant than Rudy.

If Hoiberg and Butler weren't gelling with Derrick, than he had to get moved.

The Cap space argument is overstated. It increases this year AND next. And he's off the books after this season. So a team looking to make a playoff push or improve their playoff standing (any team from 7-16 in the draft) would've listened.

Personally, I would have tried to get the Sixers to part with Jalil and offered #14+a future as incentive and taken one of their later picks (unlikely but an option) or I would have tried to convince Phoenix to swap #4 and #14 for Rose and future prospects. Maybe take a contract off their hands. Maybe discuss a 3 team deal with Philly and Phoenix. I would have aimed for more and settled somewhere in the middle or let him walk for nothing next year.

>If Hoiberg and Butler weren't gelling with Derrick, than he

I get that, but I'm saying...as a fan of a 42-40 team, this move says "we had to do SOMETHING" and not "this will help us get back to contention".

Eh

Nobody was giving up that kind of talent for potentially one year of Derrick Rose. The Suns already have a lot lotto pick so the #14 is meaningless to them. No idea why the Sixers would be interested in Rose.

And Rose was leaving so better to get what they could than to suffer through a year of him clashing with Hoiberg and Jimmy and then leaving.

I'm a fan of Derrick and still root for him but bottom line is that his trade value was nil.

And by the time you start looking at the eighth or ninth, it's not worth ditching Rose anyway because the players left are all on a similar tier with the 14th pick.

and Pau already said he's exploring options (didn't pick up his player option). Same with Noah.

Bulls are in a rebuild officially. Rose just won't be part of it.

Realistically, he was probably gone next summer anyway after his contract expired.

Bulls think they got a decent high draft pick (albeit from last years draft) and some temporary inside help for Rose.

I get it...but I don't get it.

Gar needs to move on.

Lopez contract sucks, but the teams in the playoffs (half the league) could all use him in some role if they can make the money work.

Rose is basically only valuable to teams that need a home run swing to make a playoff leap (which is like 3-4 teams I.e. the Knicks)

19th pick from last year at a position of need (in a strong draft too-- guys like Grant or Delon Wright would've been low-lotto this year) and a center who fits the coach's style who can give you a couple years as the team rebuilds. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Bulls draft another ballhandler, like Valentine or Baldwin, at the 14th. That just adds to the deck of good offensive-minded players who can play uptempo, move the ball well, and shoot. The plan is easy to comprehend.

You either let Rose walk after next year for nothing, since they weren't winning shit this year anyway (not a great option); risk he plays well and stays healthy this year and trade him before the deadline (HUGE gamble obviously); or deal him now and take what assets you can get.

It's just painful to learn such an incredible beloved talent's stock has tumbled like it has. My heart keeps telling me dealing Rose for this package is dumb... but my brain tells me it's a pretty good deal, all things considered.

He played 66 games last season and didn't have any serious injuries post training camp (freak elbow to the eye slowed him down at the start). 16/3/4 on 42% shooting in a new system with a new coach and new team dynamics. I think he would regain some form this season AND it's a contract year. Let him prove it and bank on it. OR let him walk and use the $$$ elsewhere. Now we gotta eat $14 mil in cap next summer (60% of Derrick's contract) unless we trade Lopez.

Eh...I'd rather have a ton of money to play with in pairing someone with Jimmy and filling out the roster than be stuck with Lopez.

In response to Reply # 97

This isn't a move for this year. It's a move for down the line. If Rose is just walking, might as well get a young player or a pick out of it-- and they simply weren't getting a decent pick for Rose this draft.

I'd understand if people are solely mad because they think Chicago owed him a final season before he gets to choose where to go (it's also possible that Rose *liked* the idea of going to NY), and it's a loyalty thing. That I get.

Or if people are mad cuz they wanted to just punt this year *entirely* in which case the Lopez contract eats up money they could've used in free agency... the cap is expanding, so I wouldn't be too concerned about that, but I get that too.

Their goal is to get young assets that can shoot from distance and pass well alongside some bamma bigs whose job is primarily to rebound, kick the ball back out to shooters, and run with energy. They're doing that. Getting Grant and Lopez helps that endgame more than getting nothing does. Riding out Rose, Butler, and young guys for a 4th/5th seed season doesn't really help that goal. So, like I said, the logic behind the move is sound.

And if they're high on Grant? Then they're probably thinking they got a damn good deal.

Sucks that an injury limited what looked like limitless potential. Maybe he enjoys a career resurgence over in NY or gets to reinvent himself a la Livingston.

I can't imagine Pau is going to want to take on a heavy defensive load, which he'd probably have to do as the big in NY. Also, he might want to go somewhere where he could get more touches. It's not out of the question but it probably wouldn't be his first choice.

Then again, if he and Rose got along in Chicago and he likes Phil Jackson, maybe he grins and bears it and signs with them.

Phoenix, Boston, and Memphis might be more likely options. Or Miami, if Bosh retires.

especially defensively but if you don't have to pay him like that, great. He's aight but c'mon...don't want his salary on the books keeping us from doing anything. Getting rid of Calderon is a no brainer...woulda loved to see Grant in another system but obviously chicago needed something back.

As for getting 1 year of Rose in a contract year, has huge upside potential. I think him and Melo will be fine in tandem and at least you got 1 when the other is missing time.

Now it just depends on what big we sign with our cap space.

Pau - love him but aged and probably the worse defensive option
Noah - love him but injury riddled...is he done?
Howard - is a goofy ass nigga but can still defend and rebound and score 2 feet away.

Any of those 3 gives the knicks a realistic shot at a top 4 seed in the east with a healthy season.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

with minimal injuries (nothing major). He missed no more than 3 consecutive games last season and only started slow cuz Taj bowed him in the eye and broke his face on the first day of training camp.

Of the 3 guys you listed, Dwight should be the guy (fellow Adidas dude with Rose, on same team...in NY = agents discussing it). He's 30, at that age where he's realizing he's running out of options, Horny is a 'mature' coach and Phil's in the FO. Also, Melo and Rose aren't as young and spry themselves so I think winning will outshine everything for those two. Throw in the young promise of Porzingis and it all makes sense.

If Dwight would be happy with 17 & 13 on 12-14 touches, re-focus on the defensive end and buy into the 'team'. I think the Knicks would be dangerous in the Miami Heat from this year sort of way.

Dwight
Zingis
Melo
??? (Holiday, Afflalo or Wroten?)
Rose

^^^Not bad.

17 and 13 would be great but i'd also be fine with 15 and 10 on 28-30 mpg...if we sign him, its obviously gonna be 3-4 years so we can't really run him into the ground. I think 17 and 13 would be optimistic.

I'm thinking:

Melo 23-25ppg
Rose 19-20ppg
Howard 15-16ppg
Zingis 14-16ppg

Get a 3 and D SG like "the good" Danny Green and it works. Just need some depth at PG and SF and at least one serviceable back up C.

He pushes it to 45% which is where I think he'll be next year and 19ppg is attainable I'm thinking 18-20 is what it'll be with health.

He's in a contract year with something to prove after being traded.

I think he'll still get 5-7apg too.

if you got howard, zingis and melo, you don't need to rose to score like that.

If he goes in tryna get his 16 shots and 20 points with the hypothetical lineup on the table, it prolly won't end well

It might be tweaked a bit here but Rose getting 18-20 on 15-16 shots is pretty good.

Look at it:

Melo 18 shots per game
Afflalo 11 spg
Porzingis 12 spg
Lopez 8 spg
Calderon 6 spg
Galloway 8 spg
Derrick Williams 7 spg

^^^Only guys on this list that shot 45%+ were lopez (expected), Calderon (small sample size/low shot attempts) and Derrick Williams (7th man). Guys who started the biggest bulk of the games took an average of 55 shots per game

New line up
Melo - 16spg
Rose - 16spg
Dwight - 13 spg
Prozingis - 13spg

= 58 spg...Which I think helps a team that was 27th in ppg, 21st in fga/pace. Horny's offense is designed to be faster. I don't think it's unrealistic to expect it. I doubt he takes less than 14 shots. 15+ would be my bet based on Hornacek's offense.

Derrick Rose said he wants to play with Joakim Noah.

"I want him," Rose said. "He knows that. I think his family knows that. I think everyone knows that." This isn't exactly a secret and the Knicks may have been after Noah even before the Rose deal. Plus, losing Robin Lopez makes getting a center a top priority for them. There is a report of the Wizards in on Noah, but they don't need him nearly as much as the Knicks do.

Source: K.C. Johnson on Twitter

So it looks like the issue was...they didn't like Jimmy. I sweahdagawd if they team up in NY, win 58 games with Melo and Zingis and push the Knicks to a #1 or 2 seed, I'm gonna be fuming!

1) I became a Knicks fan in the 90's, so seeing the Knicks and Bulls make a trade period is wild; much-less such a monumental one involving Rose.

2) When Carmelo Anthony went on his recruiting trip to Chicago, it was widely reported that Rose had nada to do with the Melo presentation from the Bulls. Now Rose was supposedly recruiting for the Knicks?!?! Interesting.

So wild to me. So so wild. I'm curious how Bulls fan on this board will reacting if Noah and Rose actually end up with the Knicks and give NY so solid improvement.

He didn't think he needed another superstar to come in, which is why he didn't try to recruit 'Melo. I'm sure the Bulls front office would have liked his help but he didn't think he needed to have someone help; he believed in himself and his team.

In NY, my guess is that he's smart enough to see that the team has some issues and he wants to bring in some help. It'll be interesting to see if his recruiting extends beyond Jo, if he also goes out to recruit other guys.

but I think it was clear derrick didn't like Jimmy's sudden attitude change. i wouldn't like that shit either. fuck jimmy for that.

seems like jimmy's shitty attitude + ball stopping was a catalyst (along with the front office and coach) for this sudden demise.

the entire situation makes me want to go looking for another team for a few years until the dust settles/gar pax is gone.

definitely will be rooting for derrick on NY tho. been a fan since Simeon. that's not going to change. i hope he balls out of his mind.

A guy beloved by the fans (Noah) and a hometown hero (Rose) gets dropped on their heads for nothing/pennies on the dollar and tho it might a 'decent' business move/personnel move, it speaks volumes about disloyalty (which were things being whispered about the FO already).

That on the heels of Thibs being fired under contention.

I dunno...gar/pax (and Jerry imo) are hurting anything we COULD do in FA.

I mean...this is Rose at the presser for the Knicks today:

He said..."Thank you!" smmfh dawg...lol

I'm just gonna enjoy the nba and hope these dudes prove me wrong.

fuck the business aspect. we're the third most profitable franchise in the league. the lakers payed 30 mil for kobe's corpse. we could've lived with one more year of healthy + motivated rose. if he walked next year that's his decision. at the very least it gives the organization some moral ground to stand on. which would've helped because we have a horrible reputation re: player/coach/front office relations. free agents were obviously not messing with us before. now? lolz

i could care less about rolo and grant. fuck that. these "safe/smart/"good business" moves have gotten us nowhere. actually, it seems like that mentality has hurt more than helped.

if the knicks land noah i may pull a southphillyman and jump on their bandwagon. can't wait to start typing "we" in reference to my newfound kicks fandom.

Been a Bulls fan my entire life. Jordan era sealed the fandom but, for whatever reason, have watched almost every game post Mike (thru the Jalen Rose, Ron Mercer, Eddie Robinson, Eddie Curry, etc era's)

Due 100% to the GarPax/Reinsdorf combo, I can't fuck with this situation for much longer. I love the NBA, but that from office is keeping me from enjoying the game as much I would like to.

Y'all get Noah I'm in 100%. I'm In like 65% right now with the Derrick pickup. He gonna ball and I'm pulling for dude to completely shit on the Bulls front office.

Bulls fans are about to make a great migration to #KNICKSTAPE

Rose was the biggest reason I tuned in for games last year. Jimmy has become unlikeable, the team doesn't compete, and they've gutted the roster without fully committing to a rebuild. Worst of all our starting point guard might be Jose Calderon. I have no faith that this team can contend while BarfPacks are running it, and it's totally clear that a contending team doesn't matter to Reinsdorf and the United Center will sell out to yuppies no matter what.

I might end up watching more Knicks games if the Bulls play like they did last year.

Love Rose. Love Noah.
Both of them are top 5 favorite Bulls for me.
Can't support the Knicks.
Doesn't matter who is on the team.
In fact, if Rose was traded to any other team I'd pull for that squad.
But not #knickstape...ha ha. That's asking too much.

He should've just played.

It's not like Noah wanted it to be HIS team.

Jimmy alienated himself. Everything came to the forefront on a west coast trip. Team wine tasting trip to Napa on a day off and Jimmy is the only no show. No legit excuse to not show up either.

Everything was subtly documented by the beat writers all year. Jimmy was on some other shit.

I listened to Jimmy on Bill Simmons. Had to turn it off. His personality is grating. Not sure if it was always like that, but it is.

Contrary to popular belief....Grant is a solid if unspectacular center on a good market value contract. He does his job. He rebounds...he' a physical body in the middle...and he's a solid transitional player for a frontcourt that is about to lose 2 Starter Level bigs in the same year.

Calderon is 7.7 million coming off your books when the cap jumps again next year.

Jerian Grant is a player that the Bulls coveted when he was drafted that is going to perform as well if not better than Holiday.

D Rose is going to ball the fuck out next year. He has to...he wants a Max Deal or close to it and he needs to prove he is durable.

The risk of something happening to him during the season is not worth the reward...D Rose was going to leave if he didn't get a Max Deal...and Chicago has been snakebitten by D Rose too often to take that risk with the future.

I'm going to hate seeing D Rose averaginng 19 and 7 and making a playoff run in the East next year for another team. Sad to see him go but....just facts...HE HAD TO GO! His ability is based off his physicality...so that's only going to decline. He doesn't fit well with Butler....he doesn't fit the system...it just was time.

The Bulls are gonna suck next year. Shit...they sucked THIS PAST year. Their core was never going to win the East. Change is change.

174. "When did jimmy change?"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm asking seriously cause I don't follow this inside info on his personality as much as his game.

Always struck me as just a quiet, chill sometimes "too cool for school" type cat like Derrick. As someone with a similar personality to those dudes I can see how having two of them on the same team could be grating to everyone.

As a rookie and soph was jimmy more chill with the team? Was he doing all kinds of team activities?

Also the Noah and jimmy rumored hate is interesting cause it seems like Noah would love how hard jimmy plays on both ends.

"But Butler’s emboldened state after landing a max contract led to several disruptive moments throughout the season, in film sessions and on the practice floor, sources said. That they continued sometimes unchecked throughout the season didn’t bode well for team chemistry, which started to fray in Thibodeau’s last season.

As for Butler, teammates alternated between rolling their eyes at his self-proclaimed leadership attempts and respecting his work ethic. His heavy workload and two-way, All-Star talent reminded all that his heart remained in a good place. But his failure to embrace Hoiberg’s system and preference for slower pace and isolation plays didn’t represent inclusive leadership."

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.
