>that had issues with an alt-black stand-up comedy special >that came out 5-10 years ago; it reminds me of my issue with >that word. I suppose that's a whole other discussion, but it >bothers me both from fellow black folks using it or even worse >non-black folks feeling comfortable with that label, which I >suspect with arise because of that article and the attention >it's getting.
I will say, though, that the BGN girls are much different than that standup routine we had a problem with.
Our (or my) issue is with black people who coon for WHITE people by advertising how "not like the rest of the niggers" we are. In doing so, they sell the race up the river by propagating the myth of monolithic blackness:
"Yeah, THEY are like this, but I AM DIFFERENT! I like Science Fiction and Radiohead!!!"
Quietly, it's a very destructive trope. And black people do that dumb shit all the time, just to get love from white people. And it's often sanctimonious, self absorbed whiny bullshit associated with it, the "the black kids never liked me" thing. It's terrible.
The truth is, black people, as in REGULAR NIGGAS ALWAYS been Alternative and nerdy.
REGULAR niggas.
Hip-Hop was a nerdy phenomenon. Niggas in the HOOD was on Kung Fu flicks. ALWAYS have been.
So ANYONE trotting out a "I'm so eclectic and black" narrative knows nothing about REGULAR niggas.
This issue actually became very central around Prince:
NOBODY is "weirder." But dude never reveled in distancing himself from black people. He was ALWAYS on some proud black shit, even with his buttcheeks cut out them pants. My dude was at the Superbowl with FAMU's band, nigga. He was a thorough, authentic African-American man. Weird and all. Had an army of black women by his side ALWAYS.
To the BGN girls: I think they share SOME of the stuff that I don't like about black otherness, BUT they seem to be centrally on some pro-black shit. They aren't about separating themselves from black people. They seem to be more about reminding WHITE PEOPLE that black people belong in the Nerd kingdom do. MUCH different mission there. More like Prince than the niggas I don't like.
Still not entirely my cup of tea, but I like them overall.
