They're just such different players with different strengths. And I think all four are All-Stars.

Ingram will be the best shooter. Wiggins will still be the fastest and probably the best defender. Simmons will be the strongest and probably the best passer. Parker will have the most diverse offensive skillset.

I think if a team makes Simmons an actual point forward, he could be really special, but I'm not sure an NBA team will do that until he can shoot better and play better defense on the perimeter. Between Wiggins and Parker... shit, still so hard to say. I'd imagine Wiggins will be the more well-rounded player but Parker the better offensive player.

Gun to head, I may put Ingram on top, but that's also recency bias, since I saw more of him than any other player this year. But he's the best shooter and he's got the skills/length to be a really good defender too. If he can develop his left hand and put on about 15 more pounds of muscle, I'd like him at #1.

But then again, Wiggins... and Simmons's upside...

... nah, fuck this post. I can't do it. I'm pussying out. All four will be really good, and if you had to start a team from scratch and choose one, I'm not sure with whom I'd go.

*straddles multiple fences* lol

I mean, Wiggins and Jabari are already not the best player on their team, which, on one hand, takes a lot of pressure off them but, on the other, will have people knock them since they aren't necessarily The Man.

And I think his year at LSU showed us that Simmons' warts could show more if not on the right team.

So I'll go:

1a. Ben Simmons: I feel like Colangelo and Brown are going to build around him. If he goes to Philly, of course. If they screw up the rebuild, it could drag him down to the bottom. But because he's a point forward, I'm going to give him the best shot of being The Man. With everyone being so close, that gives him the #1 spot.
EDIT: In hindsight, I'm already questioning this pick. He's the most likely to bust but fuck it, I'll roll the dice.

1b. Andrew Wiggins: Many of his Year 2 stats were similar to Year 1 but I'm expecting a third year leap. I had him at #1 but if they add Kris Dunn, I think there's a very good chance that he gets lost in the shuffle with Towns being the lead dog, Dunn being the team's motor, and LaVine eating up looks as well.
Also, Thibs could run him into the ground by the time year 5 rolls around.

1c. Brandon Ingram: The easiest fit into a lineup and the person whose skills are the most prototypical for his position. I think he could be the safer bet than Simmons but Simmons has the higher upside.

2. Jabari Parker: Replace Jabari with Giannis and you might have a new #1 on this list. But while Parker really came on in the second half of the season, I think he's the most likely to be the third wheel.

These are my comps from what I've seen and they aren't 100% spot on but this is what I see in each player:

- Wiggins (Vince Carter)
- Ingram (Durant lite)
- Simmons (Good Odom but not as good from outside...yet)
- Jabari (Melo kinda)

Thinking about each comp in their prime...I'm going:

1-Ingram
2-Wiggins
3-Jabari
4-Simmons

Wiggins and Jabari will be close tho.

I'm the only person to my knowledge who went to Duke, Kansas, or LSU in this post. So I guess this is aimed at me?

If I said something insanely biased in my reply that people are disagreeing with, feel free to let me know. I literally said it was too close for me to call all the way around. I don't think I said anything crazy, and, as someone who watches a shit ton of college basketball, I'd like to think I try to remain as objective as possible (see: me saying Wiggins should be the #1 pick over Parker two years ago, me saying Towns should be the #1 pick over Jah last year, etc).

Or maybe your comments are aimed more at someone who isn't in this post yet, lol.

24. "BI, Ben, Jabari, Wiggy"
In response to Reply # 0

BI's ceiling as a 2-way player is, no hyperbole, one of the best I've ever seen. His combination of physical and mental atrributes (particularly his anticipation, humility, and willingness to learn) combined with his role on a growing team and a coaching staff built on culture and player development, he has so many positives going for him and I'm so excited for his ongoing development.

Ben we obviously haven't seen yet but he has such unique attributes with his size, handle, athleticism and incredible vision that he is going to make a serious impact. If he can get his jumper to just be serviceable out to 18 feet, he will so tough...esp with being able to play off all the attention given to Embiid.

Jabari. Love everything about his game and no slight that he's third here...he's so methodical and sound fundamentally and he continues to grow in terms of his decisiveness, aggression, and commitment defensively. He's in a great growth situation as well being able to play off Giannis and co. No coincidence his game is starting to take off now that he's coming up on nearly 2 years post ACL surgery...that's the real timetable for when players actually get back to pre-injury levels

Wiggins. His offensive game has certainly improved but I haven't seen improvement in other facets, you could even say his defensive focus has decreased. Even with his offense, it's such a ISO heavy style that's not conducive to high efficiency or consistent winning.

Seems like "Can X's J be improved?" is one of the most important, and most difficult, questions to answer about prospects. How do people think about this?

Some people look at FT% in college, but not sure that's actually a great predictor. I tend to look at mechanics, which is why I'm really skeptical about Simmons - but not sure how great a predictor that is in practice either.

In response to Reply # 32

But there are always exceptions. Like, I don't know anyone who saw Kawhi at SDSU and thought, "There's a 40% from 3, 90% from the stripe guy right there." Both by results and eye test. Meanwhile, Ben McLemore at age 19 had one of the cleanest shots I can remember, and he can't hit the broad side of a fucking barn now.

The FT% thing is generally a good indicator... but I'd be willing to bet (without full evidence to back this up, it'd take research) that in the one-or-two-and-done era, it's been harder to determine, as shooters generally improve their FT% over their college years, so if they leave early, it's possible that their development could stagnate-- or it could soar. A lot more variance, depending on what team they go to, who their coach is, whether the team is taking their time with the kid or throwing him into the lineup right away, etc. (I can imagine that if Kawhi had gone to Sacramento and McLemore had played for Pop that we'd be talking very differently about both of them.)

In response to Reply # 32

Simmons will never be Klay Thompson but there's no real reason he can't become an effective enough three point shooter ala Bruce Bowen or the increasing number of big men who got from not being able to shoot at all to being solid three point shooters. Kris Humphries has gone from a 40% free throw shooter to a mid-30% three point shot over the past couple of years.

If Rajon Rondo and Jason Kidd can learn to become decent shooters, anyone can. (For years, people said Rondo would never be able to shoot because his hands were too big.)

There's also a willingness and intelligence element to it. It's inexcusable for any pro basketball player to not be a competent free throw shooter but a lot of people don't want to spend the time on that part of the game or when they do, they are set in their way and aren't willing to learn or think too much and don't let it become a natural action. (Ben McLemore is a good example of a guy who I think just doesn't get it and it affects his entire game, even the parts that seem like they should be fine like his 3pt shot.)

And any semblance of a jumpshot is impressive.

The mid-range jumper is harder to pick up but nobody shoots those anymore. Being able to knock down an open three is an easy skill to learn.

As far as being a No. 1 guy I think Ingram has the most potential. Simmons could be a glue guy like a suped-up Odom. Parker is probably the most bankable of the group. Wiggins is the flashiest but might end up the worst player.

let's just assume they all max out, shall we?

ingram at his best: 25-27ppg, 8-10rpg, 5-7 dimes

just has to get stronger. not worried about his shooting.

bari: 28-30ppg, 6-8rpg, 3-5 dimes

he's already a jumper and a couple calls away from averaging 25 right now.

simmons: 19-21ppg, 7-9rpg, 7-9 dimes

his jumper is just so trash. but, he's got a great mind for the game. he'll have an impact

wiggins: 23-25 ppg, 5-7rpg, 3-4 dimes

just a pussy, man. and he can't dribble. it will always limit him
