The talent is there, pretty undeniably... but I watched the UNLV, Kansas, and Wake games, and at no point did I envision anything resembling the defensive effort tonight, nor did I envision the offensive efficiency against a tough defense they showed tonight. Their 3 point shooting was pretty atrocious leading up to this game, couldn't defend the perimeter (or inside the perimeter either, for that matter), and when you add the insane inconsistency from pretty much everyone to start the season...
... put it this way, I thought up until maybe 3 or 4 minutes left that UK was still going to win, lol.
Maybe it just ended up with the perfect storm-- UK couldn't make their jumpers, UK couldn't stop the drives, their interior defender gets hurt, their other wing defender can't not foul, their best playmaker is playing hurt... add that together with UCLA unable to miss their shots and getting their hands on every loose ball that mattered, and it added up to victory. Or maybe this is the moment these players needed to get things clicking and start playing the way they want to play all year long.
They'll get another great test next weekend against a much tougher interior. And really they shouldn't count out Long Beach State, a team that's already beaten and/or nearly beaten better teams solely on the strength of their 3 point shooting.
We'll see how the post-UK play goes. Again, they're super talented... but so is Indiana. So is UNLV. Plenty of talented teams have ended up not very good. Early on this season, it definitely seemed like this team was headed down that path.
