"Wash Pro Footbal Team 2015 Season Post pt. 2"

The last post is 400+ and we're coming off the bye week so HERE we go. PART 2. You can lock that other one please and thanks.

- Second half questions

- Can Kirk build off of an incredible come back and play consistently?

- Will any of the injured players EVER return?

- Will Griff cut the struggle out of his head?

- Will The defensive backfield ever be healthy and produce the way everyone had in mind?

- How much rope does Gruden have?

- Is this Alf's final ride in the Burgundy & Gold.

This season is an interesting one for sure. Kirk is most likely gonna be average this year with some great performances (Tampa) and some awful ones (Giants). I just don't know if being average should be enough to give Kirk an extension. Especially not since there are other big holes in need of addressing on the team.

Joe Barry starting to look like a bad choice. I know Tiger Woods doesn't like the talent on that side of the ball but I think it is deeper than just their talent and abilities. Coaching on that side of the ball is not the greatest. Poor gap discipline and bad tackling angles are a discipline issue that falls on coaching. Not playing Preston Smith enough is part of it. Perry Riley Jr has been injured but honestly, he was never great in the first place.

I wonder how bad this team is gonna lose to the Pats this week. Really, all I am looking for this week is execution and discipline. Talent-wise, this team is definitely overmatched, but if they show even a little bit of awareness this week in slowing down the Pats, I'll take it. Kirk is gonna have to play smart this week. The defense is gonna have to show discipline for them to have a chance. More than the players though, this week is about coaching. If Gruden and Co. doesn't have this team prepared then that is on him.

Not with 7 dropped passes. He was hitting his marks, mostly, ma'fuckas couldn't catch a cold.

Not that anyone expected a different result, but Tommy boy didn't quite ball out like he has in other weeks.

Tom didn't play his best game and I am kinda upset. Not just because we lost, but because there really wasn't much happening in the spirit of competition.

Gruden ought to be ashamed of how this team performed but he continues to excuse them and himself. Its bad when the Wizards Randy Wittman takes more accountability for the team's performance.

Joe Barry was not a good choice for defensive coordinator. There is talent on this team and he does not coach them up very well. Very undisciplined group of players.

People keep complaining about the running game not working. Duh, teams are stacking the box and making KC beat them. When KC has become so afraid to throw INTs that he is checking down on 3rd and long down 21...well.

I heard two theories on the last statement:
1. KC is afraid of the media fallout when he throws INTs it got in his head
2. KC cannot focus with RGIII still on the roster

Again, if either of these theories are true - do you want somebody that is that fragile mentally as your QB?

Doesn't throw picks he plays it too safe and is a pussy

Again, Tom Brady he ain't. But he's far from the biggest problem at this point.

To reiterate, he is not good. But he's also not nearly as bad as our inside linebackers, safeties, d-linemen, or right tackle.

Has he improved? Obviously. But he gets passed on his right side too easily and we can't run on his side at all. I would consider upgrading Right Tackle, but only after filling several holes on defense.

and Matt Jones and his 3.7 YPC that they're just going to stack the box and make the guy who won 2 games virtually singlehandedly - i.e. with negligible help from the running game and defense - beat them.

Check this out -

Kirk Cousins is the only player on the roster with more rushing TDs than lost fumbles. His longest run is only 3 yards shy of Morris' longest run of the year. His YPC is just 1 yard short of both Morris' and Jones' YPC. Our running backs have not been getting the job done...sorry to break it to you.

Like, literally no one on that unit can tackle. Or get near the QB. Or stuff a gap. Or cover any pass catcher near or far.

Still, linebacker remains issue number one through 8 games.

I actually trust that McCloughan knows what he is doing in the player personnel department so I don't see the lack of talent that you see. I see a bunch of undisciplined players not attacking gaps correcting and taking bad angles. I don't think they are talentless, especially since they can keep a team out of the end zone when they want to.

I agree with you about the linebacking corps though. Perry Riley needs to be cut after this year. Keenan Robinson can go too and while I love me some Kerrigan, its been past time for dude to really learn the art of covering a player.

- Kirk is on target, we can't catch

- Bellicheck and McDaniels come up with an excellent run heavy game plan to exploit what we don't do well.

- Even when we create turnovers they amount to NOTHING

- The offensive line looks overmatched on 5 on 5 downs.

- The run game looks terrible

- Defensive Line looks bad, or hurt, not sure which one.

- The amount of missed tackles is really difficult to watch. That speaks to coaching, and discipline. I'm thinking Barry was the wrong choice.

- Jay Gruden still doesn't look like a real headcoach to me. Something will have to be done about this.

- Tom didn't have a great game, but that wasn't the plan, the plan was the run us into the ground and they effectively did that.

Especially from Garcon. The only receiver this team had over the years that was sure-handed was Santana Moss. Then, in Moss' last season with the team he got a case of the drops.

This is nothing knew. Hell, a drop in the preseason is what led to RGIII not being the starter if you ask me.

- Usually he's behind players or high, so guys end up having to make better catches then the play calls for. Sunday though, Kirk was on target for the most part and guys just didn't catch the ball.

Garcon is a hands catcher and usually quite good, Andre Roberts and Jordan have most of the drops, the others are uncharacteristic.

We brought in big boys to add pressure to the QB and they finally did that today.

Team lost today. Black man won. Cam out there showing these folks that you can build a team around a scrambling QB.

Kirk fumbling and bumbling out there today. He wasn't the only problem though. O line play was mediocre this week. Why were they playing LeRibeus today? Kirk got hit pretty good. That pocket crumbled a lot today. Seems like they tried with the run game today but Gruden didn't stick with it like he should have.

I'd cut Matt Jones tomorrow. No excuse for 5 fumbles in a season. He needs to fix that if he wants to get past his rookie contract. Jordan Reed too. Reed too good to be fumbling the ball like that.

Can't run the ball and can't stop the run. Damn shame.

Defense played undisciplined today. Matter of fact, this team played shook after getting all them calls against them today. Some were questionable, others were inexcusable.

Dear Jay and Joe and coaching staff: You can't play the Saints every dagone week. Your team gotta show up for the tough games too. I am tired of seeing the lackluster effort out there. Joe need to do something, anything about the run defense. Are all these players that bad at run defense?

It was nice to see Desean get a TD today though. It was also nice to see Roberts run that kickoff back for a touchdown as well. But the defense failed today. They couldn't stop Cam and the offense. Not even a little bit.

- Kirk was not sharp, didn't feel the rush, didn't protect the ball, but all in all not the sole reason they lost the game.

- They can't run the ball, it doesn't matter who's running the ball, they can't run it. I'm not sure if its on the O line, or someone else, but they are not running the ball effectively at all. Which puts way more pressure on Kirk than he can handle at this point.

- Jones gotta hold onto the ball, or he gotta hold onto the bench. Either or, no other way to say it.

- Hatcher and the line were close all game, but that's not going to be enough with Cam, you've got to get there. He's too big, too strong, and too fast for just pressure. Gotta help your DB's there.

- Shout out to Dre. Roberts

- 88 still working hard even when he's not getting looks.

- Jordan Reed is like a kid that you know can be better but just may never get there, at this point its coaching, because its clearly not talent. So someone's gotta be responsible for this kids development.

- Gruden looked overmatched once again, there was no passion on that field, they looked deflated, and even Gruden's one handed catch garnered nothing, that too me is a sign that no one was into the game.

- If you ever wonder how bad it is, they were showing HS pictures of the commentators EARLY in the 4th. NOT competitive.

teams are stacking the box/applying pressure and wanting
the skins to throw because they don't respect the pass
game. also, coupled with sketchy offensive line play,
that strategy seems to be working. skins keep trying
to lull teams to sleep with short pass plays but,
as evidenced by the game against the panthers...kirk
started to throw lazy short passes (long ball arm not trusted)
which were susceptible to being picked off. they waited in the
cut, and let the skins beat themselves. panthers are a well coached
team. skins will continue to have problems with teams that have
strong backfield play with a side of competent (even slightly
crafty coaching, mark my words.

- No one is afraid of Kirk Cousins, NO ONE, even with Desean in the game, no one is afraid of that deep ball.

- Alf is looking at 8 guys in the box at all times and he doesn't hae the speed to really exploit teams, he's a good consistent back, but he's not going to run away from anyone.

- The short passing game is what Kirk is set up to do, he can throw into windows and make quick decisions. The problem is, no one is getting separation in those quick throws. Bad down and distance, and then terrible playcalling.

Its a bad mixture dog.

running game. You don't think that Carolina sees 8 in the box in games? Or Minnesota or ATL? They most likely see the same defensive looks we see and yet they are still able to effectively run the ball. It can't be just about Kirk and his short passes. McNabb used to play similar to this and he still had Duce Staley, Brian Westbrook or Shady McCoy running the ball effectively. Hell even Alex Smith, checkdown king still has Jamaal Charles before he went down. He was effective. That running game is not just about Kirk here. Is it Lauvao and Kory Lichenstieger that makes that much of a difference? Or are they being poorly coached? Or are they all just really young and still learning? Or is there not enough consistency in the schemes they run? Something has to give yo. Can't just blame Kirk for this one though. That is not all his fault.

But why are their o lines better than ours?

If you want to blame Kirk for it then I don't know what to tell you. All I am saying is this team is poorly coached. I can't just say that this is all just bad playcalling and Kirk's deficiencies. I don't think that is the whole truth.

Were faster and more elusive than Alf. So even if the line play wasn't top notch, the first and second defenders usually couldn't get a good hit on the ball carrier. Alf needs the zone blocking scheme, because he sets up blocks well and can't put a foot in the ground and go, but having pre-determined holes doesn't work for him.

Or I should say it doesn't work with this line.

Our line isn't as effective and a lot of that comes down to coaching, but also with those teams you named, the Defense has to honor the QB running. McNabb, Cam, and even Alex Smith could all really hurt you with their legs. Kirk isn't doing that.

So its not that we aren't poorly coached, but we've got to compare apples to apples.

What is Matt Jones and Chris Thomson's excuse then? Both backs are faster than Alf and ain't doing shit behind this line. These dudes have some talent. I see it. Them boys up front ain't helping none of them. At all. I get that Alf works best with zone blocking. I get that much. But its just no reason for these other two backs not to eat either if Alf ain't.
>
>Or I should say it doesn't work with this line.

And that is one of the points I was trying to bring up. Is it the scheme that is not working? It can't just be because Kirk is one dimensional.

You know, if the line can't block for RBs, how are they supposed to block for a running QB? Running QBs do add another dimension to the offense. I can respect that. But I just don't think that is the case with this team. Scherff is supposed to be a beast at run blocking. So far dude has been mediocre in that department. They don't have a serviceable center (which I suspect might be the cause of quite a bit of the team's running struggles). Darrell Young barely gets snaps anymore. You don't think using him as a FB might help these dudes? Our tight ends have been decimated this year and you could never depend on Reed to block well. Like its a lot of factors to this. While I am not completely absolving Kirk of any blame in that department, Gruden, McVay and Co need to take more responsibility for the teams running game struggles. Kirk is limited, sure but his deficiencies ain't the sole reason for the team's struggles in the running game.

when you're susceptible to throwing ints every time
that you pass the ball, can't throw down field, gun-shy
passing, it doesn't help...teams study that. poor coaching,
sketchy pass game (result of poor coaching staff), o-line in that
order. all teams gotta do is apply pressure up front and make
them throw ints and incomplete almost-picked-off passes.

it's not just one back running poorly...all THREE running backs are
not doing well. can't get into a groove if they other team is
stacking and when you do run, it's fumbling and bumbling around.

Obviously the roster sucks (though GMSM had a great first draft to fix that), but the coaching seems bad. Not the worst I've ever seen. But bad.

Offense & defense.

These guys are undisciplined, and mentally fragile. A well coached team would NOT let a penalty like that take away their momentum. And they were fucking up before that called back pick 6. Gruden should have calmed them boys down at halftime, they still could have come back and won it. They did it in TB.

This team is so poorly coached, it is ridiculous. And Gruden is the head of it all. Sometimes I just think he is in over his head. I don't want to fire the guy because I want to see some consistency with the coaching staff. But I don't like seeing poorly coached teams. And this team is so terrible.

Joe Barry was a bad hire. It looks like Callahan is too. I don't understand how this team can hire specialists that are really good at their job elsewhere and suck here. How is it that Callahan has a top 5 running o-line in Dallas and the worst running o-line here? Shit doesn't make much sense. How does this team have such bad luck when we pick players and coaches? Joe Barry we were always suspicious about, but how can Callahan be a fail too?

We're entering the easiest part of our schedule and if we find a way to go 4-1 and maybe even 3-2 in these next 5 we're - I can't believe I'm typing this - going to HOST a playoff game.

Yes, this would require a) winning back-to-back games at some point and b) winning on the road at some point as well...

but if asked in September, I think every single person in this thread would've said "that would kick ass" if asked "how would you like to have the division lead on December 1st?"

This is bizarre.

Its a positive step.

Alf finally got RB carries this game. The biggest weakness is center though. Definitely a need to focus on this offseason.

Giants running game was ineffective yesterday. Happy about this. Hope this is trending and not an anomaly.

Kirk taking more deep shots. Deep shots ain't his thing though. He can throw that deep post route pretty good though. But streaks he misses on every time.

- I tried not to bring any of my bias and hate to the game and just watched my team play a game. It was somewhat freeing, but still things I was frustrated with.

- KC good game, not great, he's limited in what he can do, but he's proficient at enough stuff to justify keeping him as the starter for another year. Throws balls that are right in front him well, post, and slant pattern. For whatever reason, throws that are either intermediate or outside the hashes, doesn't do well, I'm not sure if its arm strength or what, but seam routes, he never hits, post flag routes, doesn't hit, and deep outs, doesn't hit. He's a good in the meantime, if I can separate how he got the job from him just doing the job its easy to like the dude, but mostly its hard to separate though.

- D. Hall's transition to safety will have some growing pains. There are things he's reading as a corner for half a second and that half a second is costing big gains. He's not Charles Woodson, he made the change when he still had recovery speed. It'll take a while.

- I don't know if Kerrigan is on the cycle again, but he looked fast, looked fresh, and actually finished.

- Alf got some rushes, and i'm happy. They gave the young boy a short yardage play where Alf should've been in the game for, and he didn't get it. I just like the idea of him running the ball. The run game looked close to the running game of old.

- This team did not magically get better over night, they're still the same kats, but for whatever reason I might actually care if they win or lose today.

Its interesting though if it is a mindset. Dude will be physical running down the field but can't hold a block for nothing. I wonder if he is a little weak in upper body strength though I could be reading too much into this.

Ehhh.....I know I am being hard on him but it probably also hurts when there isn't Logan Paulsen or Niles Paul there to pick up the slack either. But I definitely agree about the coaching aspect. A lot of people are making the same mistakes every week. Its concerning.

In response to Reply # 74

Teams are gonna start blitzing up the middle. Center is this team's biggest weakness, and also, blitzing is what won us games last year against Dallas and we have their offensive line coach (hmm). This team is in trouble. Very well could go 5-11 or 6-10.

Another poor showing by Jay Gruden. Slight adjustments to the blitz, will give him that, but everything else about the play calling has been poor. Bootleg was actually a good idea. Should have gone to that more.

Jordan Reed is becoming a real pain in the ass. Dropping passes, blocking penalties. Dude is becoming a burden. I actually blame him some for the running game not working out. If the team weren't so short on TEs this year, he would be demoted for his play the past few games.

I am befuddled at how this offense is so inept still. Gruden supposed to be an offensive genius. Why is this offense not producing points?

79. "Bad teams find ways to lose winnable games"
In response to Reply # 0

- Desean is selfish and puts himself in front of the team a lot, but his talent and ability are undeniable. He's the best player on the team, so shut it and deal with it.

- Kirk was bad most of the night, missed some open guys due to the pressure. Wasn't identifying the pressure well, or making calls. Now granted we don't know how much power he has to make those changes, but if the run blitz is showing to your side, change the side of the run, or the play. It was a bad showing for most of the night by him.

- Jordan Reed had another disastrous game on the boundary. Pass Interference calls, holding, and generally just being a bad blocker. His receiving talent is undeniable, but he seems to be a liability in anything else.

- OK so this is something that is squarely on the coaching. Our play tendencies based on our formation is starting to catch up with us. If Alf's in the game 87% of the time we're running. Defense's know this, and adjust accordingly. If we come out 4 wide we run these routes. It just seems like we never catch anyone by surprise and teams are starting to sit on some of the things we do well. Either we're going to have to run the RED GUN offense and let Kirk spin, or the OC is going to have to do a better job of running plays out of different sets.

- Both D's played lights out on Monday. Can't take anything away from either. I just wish we could've gotten home to Cassel a few more times, but honestly if you create 3 turnovers, 2 of which in their territory you're supposed to do better. We didn't do it, and that's why we lost not just Desean, but if we score on each of the turnovers we win. Simple.

- Is Jason Hatcher made of fiddle sticks?

- Does Gruden refuse to make in game adjustments or are they just really that slow at it?

I know they're still in the hunt, but fam COME THE FUCK ON.

You can't have an admittedly injured, but improved Defense out here keeping you in games, giving you opportunities to put teams away, and squander 18 of them. That's incredible.

Morris did not get one carry in the second half. Darrell Young did not get one snap in on offense this game. Both were effective players last week against the Giants. Morris is at his best with Darrell Young playing. Also Young is a good pass catcher as well. No reason for him to not be in more formations.

I like Matt Jones but he has not yet proven that he is more dependable as a running back in this offensive system than Morris has. Jones will be who this team sticks with in the future though. He does way more than Morris does along with being bigger, stronger, and faster. Blocking and pass catching were never Morris's strengths but I think he has improved in the little bit of time that he has been asked to do both this season. Morris won't be resigned and I think it might be a mistake. Jones can do more but hasn't shown much productivity and he fumbles a lot.

I am glad that you pointed out Kirk's lack of audibles and adjustments. Especially in the run game. While there are other more glaring issues in the running game, Kirk certainly doesn't help with his pre snap reads. Interesting though that the things that Gruden complains about with Robert, are some of the same deficiencies that Kirk has. While Kirk may be way more comfortable running the system than Robert, they both seem to have similar limitations scoring.

Jordan Reed needs to gain football weight. Dude is small. If you are gonna play TE then you have to block. And right now he is too small and weak to do so. Do better.

Trent is a pro bowl LT. He did a pretty good job on Greg Hardy. LeRibeus ought to enjoy his paycheck right now. His career is essentially over after this season. Its pretty bad when you are worse than Kory Lichensteiger and he has been the worst starting center this year.

Kirk played decent. Got sacked a lot though. Wasn't the best game from the O-line yesterday. Trent gave up I think two sacks. Chicago D played pretty tough. Gave T-Will all he could handle. Covered Garcon and Desean Jackson pretty good too. Jordan Reed got his though. Kirk had an INT and held the ball too long in a couple instances. But he was methodic and did move the chains. All you can ask for really.

Free Darrell Young. Even Matt Jones runs better with him in the game. Young makes the running game better. He should get more snaps. He is a good blocker, which is something the team sorely lacks this year. (just saw that we got another TE out for the season. Derek Carrier tore his ACL and MCL.)

Didn't pay attention to much on defense though. Trent Murphy had a good game though. D-line was wrecking. They definitely have picked up the slack these past few weeks. Waiting on the offense to be more consistent and catch up to what the D is doing. They have been holding it down.

I need to speak with a smart football person who can explain things to me that seem glaringly obvious. Week in and week out I'm left baffled at some of the things this team does, things that I would think could be easily corrected and would improve us.

Tell Me Why Bashuad Breeland only plays on one side and doesn't shadow the opponents' number one receiver all game long?

Tell Me Why we continue to try Alfred Morris when Matt Jones is clearly the better back?

Tell Me Why when playing defense against a third and long (8 or 9), our DBs play over 10 yards off the line of scrimmage?

Tell Me Why you don't even attempt a pass sometime to Tom Compton, keeping defenses more honest and proving to them that he actually is eligible and not just an extra blocker?

Tell Me Why we run on EVERY SINGLE FIRST DOWN?

Tell Me Why we don't take a deep shot to Desean in every quarter? If you don't connect, there's still a good chance you draw a PI. Joe Flacco made his name off this exact strategy with Torrey Smith.

Tell Me Why we don't run more bootleg and zone read QB runs? They work every time but we do them at most twice a game.

This isn't to say I'm 100% right, maybe someone smart who really gets football x's and o's could explain this stuff to me. But it doesn't seem like these things aren't impossible to correct.

The defensive responsibilities are different from every position, its not just as simple as follow him wherever he goes. If there's zone responsibilities, help responsibilities, and coverages from different sides of the field play differently depending on the call, and who's on that side with you.

You've got to be simply the head and shoulders dopest at covering X, Y, and then Z (slot) as well and I don't think in his second year Bash is there yet.

He's the best corner on the team, that's easy to see, but he's not ready for Breeland Island yet.

You've got to pay Kirk now. You've got to rep him, you've go to be all in on him.

He's here, he's produced and he's 1 game away from a division title.

So yea, this is your Qb, a dude that chooses to wear that stupid Evo helmet from Riddell

I don't love how we got here, but I have to admit I cheered a bit yesterday. It didn't hurt that Alf was getting his yards. That made me happy.

The D played well, and you've got to be a fan of those goaline stands.

This is a team that set to lose in the first round to Seattle. The exact same place RG got us too. So hey we've got to give it up.

We're stuck with Kirk and Gruden for about another 3-5 years.

That's like drafting a QB in the first round because he's the top rated QB, regardless of whether he's a 5th round talent.

Hopefully the GM is smarter than that.

I hope the GM knows what he has in Cousins (solid pro NFL QB who's got a little way to go before he proves the turnover thing is in the past) and Gruden (mediocre at absolute best).

The politics of reality may force his hand into a long term deal for Cousins, but I hope he figures out a way to avoid it for now.

Cousins and Gruden are posterboys for the concept of making people prove their worth beyond a good run over part of a season in a terrible division.

Old R*dskins would hand Cousins $100M. Let's see what they do.

He's been Kirk's second most dependable target behind Reed. But that probably won't happen. I agree with giving Kirk a Tannehill/Kaepernick type of contract, especially since some of the WR talent he has now won't be there next season. Kirk has some pretty good skill players around him and taking those away, I wonder how good he is going to look next season.

- GMSM has done a great job of finding value with players who weren't on the team, but found participating roles down the stretch. Pierre Thomas, and Mason Foster in particular.

- Jordan has arrived down the middle of the field, still can't block for shit which may be why he got left off the Pro Bowl.

- The D's not bad, it doesn't get home as much as promised, but Chris Baker and Pot Roast are as good as advertised.

I'm not saying i'm 100% sold, but I fool with them a bit.

The defense is talented, definitely. Jordan Reed is good, and very flawed.
Breeland has been consistent.
Kirk has improved leaps and bounds from what I thought.
Morgan Moses was a nice surprise as well.

But honestly, the effort I have seen from this team at times has been very disappointing. They have either quit or been lackluster for a lot of games this year. Even the first Cowboys game was a headscratcher. I am sold on the talent, but not the coaching. Yup. Throwing shade. But I'll eat some crow for now till the playoffs cause this team has done twice in a five year span what the Wizards have not in 37 years, win a division title.

best draft class in years.

Reed been staying talented, but same questions remain: health and killing the run game. But if the team had a decent blocking TE (Niles Paul) this might not be as big of an issue.

Can't argue with the way the team played the last 10 weeks. Can't argue with a playoff game.

Still holding my breath with this defense.

I still think Tommy Boy is in over his head.

I got nothing to criticize Kirk for if he's done with his 1:1 TD:INT ratio. But it would be foolish to give him a multiyear $35M guarantee based on a strong 11 game run.

I wasn't sold on the team or Kirky Kirk or Gruden, but even in a weak division, a championship is a championship. And they sealed it when they needed to: head to head with your closest divisional rival. Our team in years past would wilt in those situations.

Great win, and maybe Kirky becomes our qb of the future. His stats look good, but I'm still leaving a little bit of room for error.

- Robert just did this 3 years ago, against the Cowboys at home, but I get your meaning.

- Kirk's stats are good, and i'm with you, cautiously optimistic. I can't just whole sale commit to this regime or this qb, but we've got to enjoy the wins while we've got them. This team and org has proven it might be a LONG time before they come around again.

- Lets bask in the glow of winning a shitty division and getting Chip fired.

9/18 for 100 yards and 0 TDs

or

31/46 for 365 yards and 4 TDs

What "this" did Robert do 3 years ago? Wasn't that Dallas game the one where Morris rushed 33 times for 200 yards and 3 TDs?

two division titles in four years.

GMSM gave gruden some rope and the coaching staff, the OL, Reed and Jackson turned kirk into one of the leagues best QBs (this year).

The rest of the division is in shambles. This is the up and coming team in the east. Debbie Downers need to get with the program.

Statistically was accurate at the time, for reasons stated in that post. Just because he improved against weak competition in the back half of the season, it doesn't change that my assessment at the time was based on real numbers. Sorry.

If you guys franchise him, good luck to you. Maybe he's not as bad as the original numbers indicated-- that's the best case scenario. Worst case scenario is that he regresses to the mean. For your sake (and for the sake of my myriad friends living in DC), I'm hoping for the best.

including incredible failures like Steve Spurrier, Vinny Cerrato and the rise and fall of Bob.

A hateable owner with an impressive string of failed ideas.

And unlike Cleveland or Oakland, this team used to be one of the preeminent franchises in the NFL.

The psychology of this fanbase would give PhD students fits.

You can't start a season like that. Gruden basically split up a whole fanbase. I don't like folks who don't stick to their word. It was the best decision to make, but it also deflated a lot of enjoyment just because he let it brew for so long. Winning is supposed to fix everything, but for some reason, this just doesn't feel good. And honestly, its not even me thinking about what could have been with Robert. I just don't trust Gruden. I dunno why that is. He has been much better as a coach these past few weeks. He's been coming along. The offense is finally clicking on all cylinders and its been pretty sweet to see Kirk have these 3 and 4+ touchdown games. But Gruden in the worst times has not shown good character. So I dunno what next season is gonna bring with this guy. We'll see.

That's the combined records of the teams they played. Combine that with:

- They haven't beaten a team with a winning record
- They are only +9 in point differential, which is the lowest of all playoff teams
- They were the only team in their division with a winning record

Kirk has progressed but is it fools gold because it was done against really bad teams?

Are we really willing to pay Kirk $17 million a year with so many questions to be answered?

These are some of the reasons I can point to for why rational fans are "meh" about the post season.

This is a ~.500 team with a coach and QB who are on an impressive but short run against weak competition.

Caution is warranted.

But hey, .500 is about 2x better than I thought they'd be.

In response to Reply # 132

This is still Kirk's first full year as a starter. I don't want to say dude is fools gold until I see how he handles the next year. There will be more tape on him and his tendencies. I want to see how he adjusts when teams adjust to his style of play and see what he has improved upon in the offseason.

But I do agree about the record of the teams we have played.

Its like I said in an earlier post, there were times where this team did not show enough effort out there. They melted down. They didn't get it done. And it was against teams that were either on a hot streak, or better teams. There were times where I thought Gruden didn't want to win the game, he just wanted to get the game over with. And I think that is part of the reason why I don't trust the guy. The team at times didn't always look prepared or focused. When adversity hit them, they just melted down instead of fighting through it. I'm glad this team is playoff bound. They won the games that they were supposed to win. But I'm not sold on Gruden. Not yet.

Enjoy your first place schedule and good luck recovering fumbles as well.

We overachieved and, best of all, our team ISN'T the dumpster fire in the NFC East for once.

This team and city, myself included, were due for a reality check. I thought we could've stolen that game yesterday and I was very wrong.

Good teams don't make the small mistakes that buried us early - Desean not trying to get in, not scoring from the half yard line after, missing an extra point. From there our woefully under-talented Defense couldn't stop the bleeding. (And, we were playing Aaron Rodgers mind you.)

Still, we're probably a year ahead of McCloughan's schedule and that can't be called anything except for encouraging. We have a stellar set of pass catchers. We still have an All-Pro left tackle. And, love him or hate him, we now have at least a viable if albeit not elite quarterback.

The bad is a fairly lengthy list though. In short, there isn't a single player on the defensive side of the ball that opposing teams should fear. You saw the difference that Raji and Matthews and Peppers made - we don't have one player who can disrupt plays singlehandedly like that. Secondary is held together by scotch tape, linebackers are both poor tacklers and pass rushers (including Kerrigan who is simply overrated), and the D-line is not nearly athletic enough to maintain a consistent pass rush. Left guard, Center, and Running Back are also major concerns.

GMSM has his work cut out for him, but he's demonstrated this early that he at least knows what he's doing. I don't know if Jay Gruden is a good coach, but he's of course earned the right to continue proving that he is (I suspect the real star of the operation responsible for this recent run is McVay who will inevitably get a chance as a head guy sooner than later.) I think Joe Barry probably sucks but also wasn't helped by the subpar talent he was equipped with.

In all, I can only hope this resembles the Seahawks' and Panthers' seasons of the last few years where we appear onto something and build upon that momentum with key acquisitions and solid drafting. But too often in this league it can go the other way too - ask Jim Caldwell's Lions, a team that last year could've very well won the Super Bowl and bounced back this year by floundering through the first six weeks of the season only to never recover.

(bonus track: cheers to Robert Griffin for all he did early on. Godspeed.)

Here's to bringing in not just more but better bodies and to a full offseason of preparation with Kirk knowing he's the guy and Scotty Mac bringing more talent to Burgundy.

Hail.

it was an awesome environment at FedEx yesterday despite the loss. The burgundy and gold came out to represent their team in full force.

In response to Reply # 156

They were getting in Aaron's head in the first quarter. Even got a safety. Then Rodgers got uptempo and got them with 12th man penalties and they didn't adjust. Not a talent issue. Its a coaching issue. Just because Green Bay's defense decided to show up doesn't mean that ours is bad. They just got it done and we didn't.

And even with all of that, the defense did keep the team in the game. Offensively, they floundered. O-line stunk it up, Kirk was mediocre, WR core disappeared. Nobody stepped up on that side of the ball.

that had a lot to do with it. We got good pressure on Rodgers in the first Q but once he had time he was picking us apart

And GB scored on like 5 straight possessions. And fat ass Eddie Lacy was getting yards.

It's hardly fair to put *all* blame elsewhere.

There are solid pieces, but talent is definitely an issue. And coaching for sure.

sure some of that is coaching. But, again, there's not a single name on the Skins defense that an opposing coaching staff should have to be wary of. Not one.

They were also injured and getting tired pretty quickly this game. They did get QB pressure this game and just didn't turn what they had into sacks.

I will agree that we have poor linebackers. This team also probably needs a good run stuffing safety.

They can cover though, I think though by the end of the first half, Aaron Rodgers got in their heads. Can't do much about shook players.

The team got outclassed defensively. If we had name players, it wouldn't make a difference unless they can change the team's mindset.

GB settled in pretty quickly and gave Rodgers plenty of time from the 2nd quarter on.

Glad this mess is finally over and done with. I wish him the best in his endeavors. I hope and pray that he not only makes a resurgence but fully redeems himself and all his capabilities as a player and a person shine.

Other players that got released today: Darrel Young, Jason Hatcher, Terrence Knighton

Morris has also moved on from the team.

It is officially Gruden's team now.
