"Poll question: Ya'll Think Brady & Payton Would've Still Been Great Had They Played " Tue Oct-13-15 12:51 PM by vee-lover
in the 80s?
I know its really impossible to say either way but I was watching old footage of a playoff game in the 80s where you were allowed to put a lick on the QB...and it made me wonder how would the two most accomplished QBs of the 20 yrs have fared had they played back when it was ok to put a bounty on a player (including a QB)
Not saying they would've been bums but would they have been just as great then as they are now.
Now, you did have Marino who wasn't by any means a mobile QB but he ALWAYS had a very good o-line (remember his isotoner gloves commercials)
But because of today's rules Brady can get away w/crushing the competition w/o having a good o-line
I think Brady moreso than Peyton could've played and had success just because he doesn't seem to get as rattled in the pocket as Peyton...Dallas was coming after him this past Sunday and he still stood in there and carved them up
We saw how shook Peyton looked in the SB vs the "legion of boom" and in the 80s there were a few defenses on par if not better than that Seahawks defense

You had to be more of a savage to play before the 70s IMO and at the quarterback position you had to be more fleet of foot than these guys. You could stand in the pocket and play like either of these guys and you had to run the ball more. So do I think they could have played with Marino and Moon? Yes. Unitas and Baugh? Probably, but I am a lot less certain.
And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

They hardly get hit now since the QB's are protected and the defense was allowed to do more in the 80's so their stats wouldn't be as impressive either.

It wouldn't be like today where they're constantly having to adjust to new offensive linemen and weapons every other year. And their teams could afford to keep their good defensive players so that they don't have to go out and score 35 a game just to win.
