"Should Charlie Strong be worried? Texas fires AD (swipe)"

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/9/15/9322915/texas-longhorns-athletic-director-steve-patterson-fired

He was left with a very bare cabinet and had to change the culture. That being said he was hired with very little support. Should he be worried after only 1 season and 2 games?

Will never understand why they hired him over Oliver Luck. Patterson has pretty much pissed off everyone at every place he has worked at. Only good he did at Texas was hire Strong & Smart (which were pretty obvious hires), and bring alcohol sales to UT games.

Patterson fired the SID who was considered one of the best in college athletics, and was Strong's most trusted resource at Texas. He made ridiculous rules about how often the coaches could go to the dinning halls to meet with their players, and if they went more than the allotted times Patterson put in place, they would have to pay to get in. Then the cherry on top of the Patterson shit sundae, he straight up lied to Strong about the reasoning as to why he was going to move the academic support for the football team. (He relayed to Strong that it was the President's idea, but whoops, turns out it was Patterson's idea and he just lied about that)

Here's a pretty detailed report about the events leading up to Patterson's firing: http://www.scout.com/college/texas/story/1587506-ut-president-too-much-risk-in-keeping-ad

(cliff notes version: Patterson is a shithead, and no one liked him)

the ridiculously influential, almost certainly racist UT boosters were not on board with Strong. i assume this is their power play, and that Strong could be next. Any time a coach loses his biggest supporter it's trouble, and doubly so in an environment that is as political as UT is reputed to be. i'm scared.

We'd immediately crater this recruiting class as well as the next few years. Which would lead to even longer term rebuilding and revenue loss.

Mack Brown spent a recruiting cycle (2013) without bringing in any offensive lineman.

On a fucking football team.

and it's pretty much what the other poster linked in that report, dude(Patterson) was just an asshole to everyone. The donors don't like him or his wife very much, his communication down the chain of command was almost nonexistent, etc. Most of them were really happy with Strong being hired and know it'll take a little time, and they generally like him. I think he'll get three years at least.

^^This could all be bullshit but my source is a super rich guy that deals with all of these people regularly and is very well connected with UT athletics.

Brand Longhorn has been getting slowly stamped back down under the end of Deloss and Mack's reign in the fallout of realignment and the totally pointless Longhorn Network. They brought in Patterson as a salesmen and not a University or sports guy, now quickly realize they need their boosters more than they need to fight for brand-fans (a fight they can't win if they aren't winning and other mega schools are doing so well at ((Bama, OhioState, Oregon, whatever...).

Long story short: The hubris of Texas is funny as fuck. Sorry that some good coaches may get caught up in it, but it's major popcorn material.

"Strong also struggled to get support from Patterson. After his first season at UT, Strong asked for increased salaries for his eight analysts, who were among the lowest-paid in the Big 12. Strong wanted to increase their salaries from $24,000 to $50,000, which is $5,000 more than what Kansas is paying its analysts, who are support staff members whose duties include scouting opponents and breaking down film of practices and games. Patterson turned down Strong's request. Six of the eight analysts left for other jobs.

Before last season's game against UCLA, Strong requested a van to transport coaches' wives and children to AT&T Stadium in Arlington. Patterson turned down his request. In another controversial decision, Patterson ended the policy of offering coaches and other athletic department employees free meals at the team's dining hall. Coaches liked to eat at the training table to socialize with their players, but Patterson instituted a new policy that offered coaches 30 free meals per year and charged them $10 for each additional meal."

"In two years, Charlie could not have fucked that place up," a coach tells The Inside Read. "It was already fucked up before."

It's widely believed Texas again won't have a player selected in April's NFL draft, a year after its record 76-year streak was snapped.

"None of the older guys are going to the NFL, so you can tell most of them really don't care," one of the coaches says. "The upperclassmen are killing everything. The freshmen just want to play. They're balling their asses off."

One coach who reviewed Texas's embarrassing 50-7 loss to TCU last Saturday still can't comprehend how Brown didn't offer scholarships to Horned Frogs star quarterback Trevone Boykin and wide receiver Josh Doctson.

"Why doesn't Texas have those two guys?"

The coach then started laughing. He already knew the answer and wasn't as polite as Strong about it.

"Mack," the coach says. "Brown."

I'll be surprised if Chad Morris is still at SMU next season as well. I think Miami or Maryland come calling this offseason.

SC wasn't doing shit this year.

don't see Herman as a cultural fit at SC but it's an intriguing thought. my bet would be Herman turning SC into a fucking monster. SC doesn't seem to go after big name guys so it's not a completely wild thought. but they'll probably just hire some equipment manager from the Pete Carroll era...

they had to fly the AD and school president out to fucking Tulsa to take their coordinator cause they couldn't get him the first time.

it seems like Strong won't be there after next season. everything im reading from texas fans make this shit sound like deliberate sabotage from BMDs and Admin.

One of the bigger take away is that the Austin American Statesman and 24/7 writers are complete hacks.

From someone that doesn't like coach. - Geoff Ketchum

There's been a lot of discussion in the last 18-24 hours about what happened in the pursuit of Sterlin Gilbert that caused it to be on and off and on again.

Because this discussion has caused a mini-uproar, I thought I'd share some thoughts at the risk of getting caught up in the wrath of those with predetermined thoughts, or worse, agendas. I believe that Charlie Strong has been a failure in his first two seasons as a coach, but some of the narrative that currently exists, is hard to swallow and it's a bit unfair.

Don't get me wrong, I think there were some real tactical errors created in the process and if I were to describe the overall failure through mid-day on Friday, I'd call it a complete team failure because I think there are pieces that a lot of different parties can own.

Ok, here are my thoughts...

1. I believe more than any media outlet covering this story, we had more better and more varied sources. I don't know that we would have ever believed that we'd be as wired into the Tulsa side of this story as we ended up being, but it has been a big part of our ability to tell a global narrative in this situation.

I bring this up because what we've heard from the Tulsa side of this story is simply different than the narrative that's being said on the Texas side.

2. Our sources on the Tulsa side of this mentioned numerous issues that details needed to be worked out, but the issue of Charlie butchering contract negotiations wasn't part of the deal.

For instance, if we look at Thursday, our sourcing confirmed that Gilbert thought they had what amounted to an agreement in spirit and wasn't happy that Terry Franklin interviewed on Thursday, an event that turned out to be an annoyance and I think Charlie mishandled that because it just didn't need to happen.

There was also displeasure about one particular leak they believe existed on the Texas end that was releasing that it was a "done" deal when there were still contract particulars to work out (no final agreement had been finished. When Gilbert went home that night, his frustrations were based on multiple things, but he wanted the job, and wheeling and dealing with Charlie wasn't an issue.

In fact, it was kind of out of Charlie's hands by late Thursday and into the hands of the person's hands who is supposed to handle contract specifics with Gilbert's lawyer/agent. I'm told that person is Arthur Johnson.

3. Charlie Strong's wheeling and dealing was very limited in this deal and in my mind it's absurd to think that negotiating contracts would be left into the hands of someone who is completely unprepared to walk into a room and bounce contract numbers around with an actual sports agent.

Imagine for a moment a world where Les Miles is discussing dollars with Jimmy Sexton. It just doesn't happen like this, although I would pay money to see this as a reality show.

4. I can't stress enough that there were issues involving the OL coach, a little bit of the sideshow of everything, the Franklin interview, the leak at 5:50pm on Thursday night... the money part just hasn't been brought up much at all on the Tulsa side. These other things? Hell yeah.

5. Charlie Strong has hooked up every coach that has worked for him in the last two years with the best contracts of their lives, perhaps the best they'll ever come close to knowing, and people think he "low-balled" the most important hire of his life? No part of his history suggests that he's into limiting the money spent on his staff. Ask yourself, why would he care? Why would he risk this critical hire? It just doesn't add up at all.

His history suggests that he was much more likely to inflate the cost if in a position to do so than the other way.

6. Ultimately, the bringing his OL coach with him was a big deal and there was a major hesitation there that was truthfully a bigger issue than dollars. Same with trusting that this wasn't Gilbert stepping into a potential disaster decision and being unemployed and going backwards in his profession if there weren't an expressed commitment from higher-ups that coaching Charlie isn't the Titantic.

What was done by the AD and president could have been done with Cumbie on Tuesday or Wednesday if the urgency from Friday had existed earlier. It might not have mattered with Cumbie at the end of the day, but real support from the admin arrived on Friday and not much earlier than that.

7. If I'm wrong and our sources are wrong about Charlie's involvement in negotiating, then let me ask this question...

Who in the hell thought it would be a good idea to let a coach that doesn't do analytics at all and doesn't seem to care much about math in general (counting running backs touches, as an example) walk into the role of negotiator with an agent?

In fact, that's such a bad idea in theory that anyone who signed off on that is much more responsible than Charlie. That's like asking my daughter to drive the car and then assigning them the blame after the car is crashed.

Look, if Texas wants to fire Charlie Strong, just do it. There's a million legit reasons to have concerns about his previous decision-making and how it will impact future decision-making?

But, this Charlie The Pawn Shop Negotiator thing just doesn't pass the smell test
