You gotta beat 7 world-class athletes in a row. Clearly Serena's the favorite but realistically her odds are probably about 50/50.

Hard to bet against Djok. Fed got him on those fast courts in Cincinnati and with that surprise 2nd-serve return half-volley. Djok will be ready this time.

And still lose a tournament.

Was she the best player in 2014? Yes, and she only won a single Grand Slam.

My point is not to doubt Serena but to emphasize how damn hard it is to play at an exceptional level seven times in a row when every single opponent is playing the match of their life against you.

Historically huge upset.

But dropping some match somewhere on her way to 28-straight GS matches in a single year? Yeah, very likely to happen.

which was pretty funny to hear coming from him but...

...didn't really see too much after that which appeared to validate their constant criticism

Couldn't tell if Murray was talkin to his coach/trainer after a lot of points but some of his verbal antics looked to be on the same level w/o the announcers mentioning it at all

was absolutely convinced he'd go out in the 2d round after upsetting Nishikori but he's still here. And just blasted Robredo off the court (with a wild last game). He should be meeting Tsonga next, which could get entertaining.

one of the running narratives during this tourney was her serve

126-128 mph is ridiculous

but doesn't mean shit if it's out.

It's sort of amazing that he last won this 7 years ago. He's been knocking at the door each year. He's the most successful men's player of all time, and yet I almost feel sorry for the guy because it's been so long.

He's blacking out right now. Plus he's well rested after a some very short matches.

I think he's going to pull it off.

In response to Reply # 29

Fed was in incredible form, better form than Djok, but yet Fed lost to him in the final. Current form going into the match doesn't seem to matter much when the heavyweights collide. More about the matchup.

That being said, if it's a Fed/Djok final (far from certain), it'd be 50/50 in my mind. Stan's got a great chance though, and Cilic shouldn't be a total pushover either. He's pressed to prove that last year wasn't a fluke.

he can't beat Djok in a best of 5. Stan has a better shot, and despite his well-documented struggles on the hard court I kinda hope he wins today

Had me in tears and cracking up at the same time. Just an incredible moment to cap off an incredible upset. Props to her and also to Serena...what a tour de force she has been and in professional sports, especially one loss elimination, you're gonna get caught with an outlier over time...that's what makes these long dominant streaks even more impressive.

In response to Reply # 0

Outside the French this is Djok's least successful major (won once), if Fed makes it to the final and Djok is slightly below his best, Fed with his hyper aggressive game might have a good chance...but then again I said similar things at Wimbledon too.

I think the balls each tournament uses make a difference too in terms of court speed.

In response to Reply # 0

Of course Djok is younger and should probably win, but this is probably the best mix of circumstances Fed could hope for. He's playing his best tennis, he's extremely well rested, and if Djok leaves the door open a crack Fed can pull it off.

It's gonna be a hell of a final either way.

Though ideal would have been for Cilic to take Djok to 5 rather than folding like a cheap lawn chair.

Competitive first couple sets and then Djoko's fitness, consistency, and defense wear on Federer to the point where his shot-making drops off and he gets too sporadic to win games. To Fed's credit, I thought his shot-making and variety in the first two sets were the best he's had in awhile against Djoko..but he missed some big shots and eventually led to that same trend of consistency vs sporadic, and the former always wins.

Lastly, that crowd was fucking bush-league. Cheering Djoko's first serve faults on multiple occasions and then a few people intentionally making noise on Djoko's serve toss. I know you like Fed but you cannot cross the line, unacceptable.

Side note: the chair ump, first female to ever ump a men's final, was really really good on her calls. I think she made 9 over-rules and all were correct.

He looked disappointed in his post-game interview but not broken like he was in those 2009-era losses to Nadal. He even said something like "I'm very happy with my game right now. I think I'm improving."

Until Roger really starts to decline and drops out of the top 10, I'd be shocked to see him retire.

He knows he can beat anyone in the world other than Djok and a 100% Nadal. Right now there's only one guy to beat until Nadal is back in form. I think he's waiting for a draw to open up at some point like his French Open title.

Djok only needs to play a good match to beat Fed these days in a 5 setter, not a great one. Fed needs to play almost perfectly and hope Djok is off in some way. The surface used to make a difference, but not anymore since Djok has mastered them all.

Last year's US Open was a golden opportunity for Fed.

That five-set Monfils match really wiped him out though. Still, Djokovic isn't going to make every final. Fed plays smart and bides his times, he should get another chance.
