John Wall Comments on New Contracts, NBA Collective Bargaining Agreement
By Tim Daniels , Featured Columnist Jul 15, 2015

Washington Wizards superstar John Wall remembers the scrutiny after signing a max contract worth $80 million two years ago. On Tuesday, the point guard discussed the changing landscape of contracts in the NBA and how it altered the outlook of his deal.

J. Michael of CSN Washington noted the comments from Wall, who used the recent signing of Reggie Jackson to make his point.

"People talk about me getting $80 million, now you got people getting $85 million that haven't made the All-Star (Game) or anything like that," Wall said. "I guess they came in at the right time. That new CBA kicked in and they're good now. Reggie Jackson gets five years, $80 million. I'm getting the same as Reggie Jackson."

The current collective bargaining agreement is working out well for the players. The salary cap continues to rise, which leads to larger contracts, and the projections are for a significant jump once the new television deals come into play.

That's why players like Jackson, a solid asset who averaged 14.5 points last season but not a top-tier talent, are able to make the same amount as Wall. The available cap space increases, and teams desperate to fill voids on their roster are willing to pay.

John Wall vs. Reggie Jackson for 2014-15 Season
Player PPG APG RPG PER
Wall 17.6 10.0 4.6 19.9
Jackson 14.5 6.0 4.2 17.2
Basketball Reference

The ability to keep earning more money has also led LeBron James to sign short-term deals, giving him a chance to opt out each summer to maximize his earnings until that huge increase arrives. Then he can back up the Brink's truck and collect a monster payday.

There's some risk that comes with the approach, of course. Any type of significant injury could derail the plan, but he's clearly willing to bet on himself and his body holding up.

Although the relative earnings between two players don't always match up, Wall said he's not mad at the players for taking the deals, per CSN Washington.

"That's what happens," Wall said. "But I'm happy for all those guys. To see anybody get the opportunity to live their dream out, get the opportunity to take care of their family when they can, it's a blessing."

Wall can't hit the open market again until 2019, according to Spotrac. He's going to make a lot of money before then, reaching a peak of more than $19 million for the 2018-19 campaign, but given his talent and the cap increases, he'll still be missing out on a lot.

The bottom line is that being a free agent pays extremely well, even for those outside the league's upper echelon. And it seems it's only going to become more lucrative over the next few years.

He goes on to say he's glad players are getting more money. That's hardly hate. He's just noting that players currently going into free agency are getting even more money than he got when he went in. Jackson is the perfect example of this point. He's not saying Jackson should be paid less. He's saying if they came into FA together, Wall should be paid more. And he's right.

I can't call it "hating" for Wall to note he should get paid more than Jackson. He's a much better talent who's also done much more so far in his career.

if someone at my job who is more qualified than me was openly commenting that they should be making more than me, I'd look at them sideways. Actually, I would take it as them hating even though I understand where they are coming from.

I guess my point is A) why are you even commenting on it. Its something collectively bargained and you are making the maximum amount under such agreement based on the fact that you signed it when you did
B)why are you mentioning another player by name? We all know who makes more and whether they should or not based on talent/achievements.

Anytime you talking about someone else's money is dangerous ground. When you then compare it to yourself....nah.

... everyone would've pointed to Jackson anyway. Plenty of media members noted on Twitter and otherwise that Reggie Jackson essentially got the same contract as John Wall.

Again, he didn't try to hurt Reggie's money with his comments. I see nothing wrong with using his name.

A media member asked him about it. That's why. He could've chosen to say "no comment," or he could've chose to answer. He chose to answer. It's not like he called a journalist out of the blue saying "LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT REGGIE JACKSON."

(Edit: not that a player should feel compelled to comment on every question an idiot journalist might ask-- but I think the issue being asked about here isn't one of those.)

And it's hard to compare NBA salary talk to regular joe salary talk, because (1) our precise salaries/signing bonuses/benefits aren't often out there for the world to see, (2) the media doesn't give a shit about our salaries, (3) the media doesn't write articles about our salaries for the rest of the world to debate, and (4) we don't have multiple conversations with the media per week, who at any time may ask us what we think about player salaries.

Seeing as how he *immediately* said that he shouldn't think Jackson and players under the current CBA should be paid less than they are, and he's happy players are getting as much money as they can, I don't really see anything offensive in what Wall said.

Wall also probably knows that, if Jackson beats the shit out of him on the floor at any point, his comments will burn the fuck out of him. He's acutely aware-- he just doesn't think it will happen.

Every question has a lot of different answers. The non-answer, the stately answer, the funny answer, the slam retort, the honest answer and potentially even more possible responses. This was stated recently by Winnipeg coach Paul Maurice when one of his players went all Marshawn Lynch on the press

"I have about five answers in my head every question, and one of them is so profane and inappropriate that my parents would disown me, well my dad maybe not so much, I learned most of it from him, but, oh I would love, I would enjoy so much and you know, you would too, it would be a nice break from the bull I’m firing out most days."

Wall chose Jackson as someone safe to call out here. I don't mind that as much as his overall attitude here. Maybe it's posturing for forthcoming negotiations--the stars know that this is their opportunity to reclaim a larger piece of the pie--but how it comes off to the public is an $80-million man in a system that is perpetually escalating his value acting like he has been slighted in some way.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It shouldn't be "why did he choose to comment?" It should be "why did he choose to take that response when making a comment?"

Yeah, it reads like getting the jump on upcoming negotation, and, as Shells pointed out below, it may be part of a bigger movement at play.

you to say something. I don't necessarily get the posturing angle bc if he continues to play like he does, he will be getting another max deal, no?

As far as it being related to the next CBA, his bottom line point can be taken as JW needs to get paid more or Jax should be paid less (even though he states thats not his point).

If that was an attempt at something ffor the next CBA, it was very poor especially to name another player in your union as a comparison.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

It's about how he should be getting more money. It has nothing to do with Reggie's money.

What people don't understand is that in a labor dispute, public opinion means very, very little. It's all dollars and sense. I do think he was trying to get it out there that right now the bloated deals are going to be the mid-tier players and the top players are not getting their fair share from the teams. That said, he wasn't yet a top player when he inked his extension and he is part of a system that will escalate proportionately so that on their next deals he will appropriately out-earn Jackson and then some. Just unnecessary to say what he said.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

but the specifics were completely unnecessary.

Assuming the question was something along the lines of:

John, what do you think about some of the contracts that are being handed out this season, specifically to guys who havent made the all-star team and will be making more than you?

i don't know if the question wasn't quite that specific but an answer as simple as...

Yes, I've noticed that and its definitely true. I'm glad that everyone is being able to sign the deals that they are making and i look forward to the next free agent deal that i'm able to sign.

He comments on it and his answers are as factual and honest. Whats the problem?

The fact that everyone knows what everyone's salary is in the nba compared to average joe you like and I as even more reason why he doesn't need to get specific with names. Everyone knows John's salary and Reggies. Everyone doesn't know your salary or mine. So if i felt some sort of way about the salary inequalities I would need to give a specific example to explain it bc our salaries are unknown generally speaking. That's not a reason for John to name Reggie bc its known information.

That canned answer bullshit is for the birds, man. John wasn't trying to hurt Reggie's money, he was trying to set up a specific watermark for his own actual worth. Couldn't have less of a problem with this answer.

on someone else's money is a good idea.

And just bc someone is being honest and not canned doesn't mean its a good idea or the 'right' thing to do.

Would you be applauding Dolan's honesty if he said "truth be told, i hate cutting these 6 figure checks to these niggers on a weekly basis?"

Of course not...so the 'he was being honest' retort is silly. He said it, great...now lets discuss what he said lol

There is also the manipulative answer. Coaches do it more than players but players do it, too, they want to put certain things out there. They know that what goes between quotation makes gets more credence than what doesn't. They know, generally, what is going to get picked up and what isn't. Just because someone isn't deferring, deflecting or spouting cliches doesn't mean they are offering honesty.

Not surprisingly Wall comes off like a greedy, petulant person whining about only making $80M in a system that perpetually increases its rewards, as it will for him when he signs his next contract. The business has been like this since the 99 lockout, scales escalate and when you sign your deal matters. You can take the risk of trying to micro-manage that or get the security of a max deal when you have the chance. You live with your choice and either way you have an obscene amount of money. It was kind of dick (but also true) call out Jackson in particular, but I think he should not have been crying about the broader the dynamic in the first place. I will have fun watching this guy win nothing of note in his career.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Does he have a legit complaint here? When he signed his contract he got just about every dollar he could. When he signs his next one, he will get all he can down to the last cent. It will be more than he makes now and more than Jackson makes. So where is his gripe? In what way was he wronged?

But he is pointing out how when he got his deal, he was put the ringer by media types & pundits whether he was worth it or not. And right now, Reggie types can get 80 and it's nobody says nothing.

John takes everything personal. Every slight. And sometimes he talks about it. He's probably totally indifferent to Reggie Jackson, but he knows he's better than him.

He's just a straight forward competitve country dude.

And I think most players are like that. He's just too honest and says it.

You read the comments below straight news articles and you read enough analyses of it, goddamn near every player in every sport is overpaid according to multiple people.

But I get that some of these guys are so competitive that they look for stuff to take to heart as motivation.

John: 16.3 PTS 2.3 REB 11 AST 4 STL 0 BLK 3 TO 41.6 FG% 0 3FG% 15 FTA

meanwhile, check out this comparison: http://bkref.com/tiny/yEwmp

one of these guys will make about $4M less than the other, but already has a ring and MVP trophy.

steph had the ankle problem plus was an RFA who re-signed.

the market is not a meritocracy and i think it's petty to see it that way. you think about great winners, champions, they made sacrifices early and often in their careers. tim duncan, tom brady, martin brodeur, et al.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

...and Wall couldn't stay on the court his first 3 yrs either. only played more than 60 games once during that time. no All-Star; no playoffs.

nobody thought Wall was max extension worthy. the real salary difference? Wall was a no. 1 overall pick. Steph wasn't and he didn't get a max extension.

so aside from draft pick, they were in VERY similar circumstances.

http://www.cbssports.com/nba/writer/ken-berger/25241544/summer-league-buzz-owners-may-opt-out-of-collective-bargaining-agreement

The upshot is that, in the last three years before either side can opt out of the CBA, players' negotiated contracts will come in lower than their guaranteed share of 50-51 percent – significantly lower in '16-'17. And, as one league source told me hypothetically, there are going to be a lot of owners who will look at those numbers and say, "If they're only worth 46 percent, why the hell are we paying them 50?"

FOH with this one year stats wonder shit because it's not the same. John Wall is the face of the Wizards from the outside looking in. Reggie Jackson had a solid year but Andre Drummond is the franchise guy in Detroit according to SVJ. No way in fuck should solid contributor/good player get the same as franchise player/perennial all-star.

Attach a tag to that contract that says we had to sign him to this deal in order to use up cap space in order to avoid the salary floor. The fourth best players on championship teams are getting the same chicken as John Wall.

He's a player, and with Drummond he looks like an allstar

Years 4 and 5 of this deal will let them be competitive in free agency even as the group of Drummond, KCP, and Stanley re-ups. KCP wont get the max but Drummond will and SJ is a possibility.

That's the obvious impression after giving that comparison the once over. Why in the shit is Reggie taking 246 shots already? He coming for the young AI title with a vengeance, reckless gunning COD ass nigga.

At the time John Wall was right. No clue what this means for the future but right that day, he was right.

I think Wall is still the notably better player, but Jackson has definitely proved that he's worth that contract to his team, and considering Wall's playoff status, he's probably regretting those comments today.

but if he's really worried about other dudes making more when he's already guaranteed 90+ for his career, he's in a bad place.

In response to Reply # 0

Scottie was constantly gettin played financially, cause he was unlucky that way. Bad timing on contracts, other players (mainly MJ and Kukoc) gettin cheddar over him, etc. Remember him signing that long-ass contract extension for less than 2 mill annually, then watching guys like Larry Johnson and Webber cake in. And Scottie was mad as fuck about it, talking about Kukoc money, sittin out, throwing chairs, etc.

Wall signed his max deal before the TV money came in. Bad timing. 5 milli with Reebok and couple years later Harden gets 15 from Adidas? He's the best player on his team, but his contract is 3rd after the Injury Guy and Ian Mahinmi? He mad... just like Scottie was.

In response to Reply # 0

Here’s where Wall’s trophy shelf comes into play. According to a person with knowledge of the CBA discussions between the league and the National Basketball Players Association, the designated veteran rule extends to those who have achieved all-NBA status or won high individual honors such as league MVP or defensive player of the year. Wall, in his seventh season, is a three-time all-star but has not made the all-NBA team nor contended for MVP or defensive player of the year.

Hypothetically, if Wall makes the 2016-17 all-NBA team, next summer he would be eligible for a four-year contract extension at 35 percent of the Wizards’ total salary cap amount, the maximum allowed under the salary cap. Without any of those honors, Wall, 26, would still be in line for a three-year extension at 30 percent of the cap. A hefty raise, for sure, but one that would leave Wall behind many of his superstar peers.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wizards-insider/wp/2016/12/15/john-wall-feels-undervalued-and-the-nbas-new-cba-might-not-change-that/?utm_term=.b2b7e4e24c4b
