"Washington Wizards Offseason Post"

Looking at the two finals teams has me wondering what direction the team should go in.

The wiz are great defensively, and could build on that, like Cleveland with a front court similar to thompson and mozgov (maybe gortat and humphries) with a defensive minded back up point (Delly). In some ways, this is the easier model to mimic and Blatt/LeBron and them are achieving simply off of effort (i.e. The Wittman Way).

But Leonsis is talking alot about how the team is adopting the analytics approach next year and shooting more threes (and humphries is talking about working on his 3 point shooting and becoming a stretch). he cant guard multiple positions like draymond so they'd have to look to the draft or FA for that.

Wall will never be Curry, but curry cant shoot for his life right now and wall getting to the basket is an advantage when spacing the floor and getting needed buckets.

Beal could be Klay eventually... but who knows if he is healthy enough. He did have solid defense this playoffs. Otto and Barnes are prolly a wash.

In neither system does Nene or Seraphin play a role. And going after premier bigs like like Love, KD, M. Gasol, or Horford will drastically effect how we play.

We all know EG is gonna eff up the draft so to some degree this next draft pick doesnt even matter.

So what do yall think? Which style? What off-season moves do you want to see?

maybe as soon as next year, otto will officially "arrive". But i wouldnt be surprised if it takes another year for him to really make his presence felt consistently.

He's gonna play more games/minutes than ever next year. Hitting a wall, getting injured or both wont be surprising.

I don't think this stretch PF thing is exactly the way to go. Ernie has tried to develop 4 PF in the last 5 years and none of them panned out. I hope Ernie doesn't think about drafting another one.

If they are going the analytics route, Wiz should consider drafting Tyus Jones. This team definitely needs more shooters and Tyus is a good as it comes. Heard Houston was interested though so that might not materialize.

Wiz should consider acqiring another defensive big in the near future. Gortat is not a defensive anchor. He barely plays 4th quarters. He bout to end up being a bad signing if Wittman keeps using him like he has. Who is gonna see value in a dude who don't play 4th quarters? Plus this team needs Nene's replacement.

...dunno which team will take him (probably a team that can eat $13M), but he could be got for 2 second round picks if it was up to me. use them shits on some young BIGS overseas.

go after a BIG in FAgency (i.e. Amir Johnson; Tyson Chandler; Greg Monroe?).

or...just give his minutes to Kris Humphries.

Cuz he's taking that guy. Looney prolly fits the mold.

They need bench help at every position, so its hard to say. They could take any non-lotto pick and it would help.

But i could also see him trading the pick. Not sure what it and Nene could get you, but some team might want some cap relief.

Wiz have been working him out. They seem to like him. Not too excited about drafting him. Past drafting record with tweener PFs suggest that he won't work out.

I don't think there is enough value in trading the pick. Nobody really wants Nene and cap relief is not a premium like in years past.

not getting minutes on a veteran playoff team. Setting the stage to draft the next project that leaves after his rookie contract. ugh.

I hope they take grant. He has size, might complement sessions if they have to play at the same time and is so raw. Could have an impact in this year's playoffs even if his upside is limited. Beal and Wall need to keep their minutes down a bit more and the second team needs a general to keep them from not sucking. Beal's injury and blowing leads in the third cost them a 50 win season last year.

This shit is the reason why this team will not go anywhere. Ernie doesn't see the value in developing talent at all. Ernie gonna need to see the value in drafting soon as it will be his cheapest option to fill roles with the cap going up. He can't keep bargain basement hunting talent forever.

I hear you about Grant. For me its either him or Tyus Jones. I really want Tyus but it seems like Houston got a strong hold on him. A guard that can spell Beal and Wall is definitely needed. They can use all the rest they can get.

I see all these Wiz fans pining for a stretch power forward. I don't think it's a bad idea, but I don't see it as a major need at this point. This team still lacks consistent talent.

i'd take a stretch 4, but the cats in our draft area are small or cant shoot. if they could somehow trade up to get one... or maybe portis or dekker falls.

Not a stretch, but WCS could fall...draft express has him at 16 now. They just need some luck.

Looks like Looney's health has bumped him down some...

in place of grant, Vaughn might be a good look coming off the bench.

The FA guard situation is much worse than the available bigs. The draft may be the only way to improve the backcourt without overpaying.

*sigh*

I'm tired of them being entertaining though. Gil era was entertaining too.

They trying to clear cap room to win the KD sweepstakes. I'm a pessimist. That shit ain't happening. Problem with the Wiz is that all the other draft picks outside of Beal and Porter were so bad that they have no real assets. If they want to do anything of significance, Porter, Beal or even Gortat gotta be on the block.

They already sported the overachievers' crown for beating Toronto's ass and hanging tough with Atlanta. Losing to the Cavs wouldn't have gotten them much more respect and damn sure no banners.

I just don't see it for this team, and it's got nothing to do with your boy being suspect as the No. 1 guy on a real contender. They just don't have enough inside and foreseeably won't get enough. They are the new Hawks, shoot for the middle and hit it squarely.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

At this point, I like our young core. Porter showed the same poise and grit this year that Beal did in his first year in the playoffs.

Unless it's someone who puts us in the ECF, I don't see moving either of them. I say stockpile for this farfetched KD to DC thing if anything and if that fails, have flexibility

the team needs as much talent as it can get and porter showed he can be an excellent 6th man. We'll see about Oubre.

but with beal... i wonder if they think he is not worth the max, either cuz of his injuries or because it limits their flexibility in 2017.

Which honestly would make me happy, cause that means Oubre would get tick sooner than later and we can start bringing him along immediately.

Otto's biggest defensive weakness is lateral quickness, and I can see Wittman bringing Oubre in to defend guys that are a little quicker on the first step.

He does somewhat limit their flexibility as a Max contract with him might be higher than Wall's contract. That is one of the reason's why I don't mind trading him. If they are gonna trade him, they should do it now. Plus if he can attract someone better, then it is a definite win.

kid turns 22 this month, and is going to be a top 3-5 SG in a shooters league on a team with no other legit shooters...

so, if they can get Aldridge or KD, that's one thing, but talented losers like Love, or cousins is another. KD is getting old and has a foot thing too...

He's a RFA in 2016.

If this KD to DC thing happens, you just sign KD and then Beal as we should have his Bird rights. Sure you go into the luxury tax at that point, but if you have a team with Wall, Beal, Porter AND KD, YOU PAY THAT SHIT!

If KD is a no go, I think Beal can be gotten for less than the max.

Remember Pierce will be gone by then, Nene's $13million should be off the books by contract expiration or trade, and I think Webster's contract comes off the books too. We still have quite a bit of flexibility.

When it suits him, he talks about DC being a large market that can attract fans, players and investments.

When it suits him otherwise, he talks about games not being sold out, needing to develop the fan base and spending wisely.

I dont have faith that he will pay the tax to keep beal, get KD and resign otto a year later.

Maybe the new naming rights deal will help buffer some of this...

Otto at the 4, Oubre at the 3. Could be incredibly dynamic. It'd also solve the problem of Nene sucking.

He'll need that as Wittman likes to make his young guys wait. Hopefully he can provide some depth and scoring from the bench.

But if Pierce comes back, I'm not sure how that rotation works out. I really don't like the idea of Wall, Beal, Oubre, Porter/Pierce at the 4. Just don't think this team is built to play that way for sustainable periods.

I really hope he does bring some offense along with his length and defensive ability. We need it.

Which is understood. An oft hurt aging forward with a $13 million dollar price tag ain't sweet.

Then again we're in the middle of free agency. No one is going to take that on now. But mid season when people will be looking for expiring contracts, we might be able to land something.

Like you said though, he will be good trade bait at the trade deadline.

I don't mind keeping Nene because his deal is almost done. Gortat however is looking pretty questionable as a signing now. He doesn't play 4th quarters. That's not a good look for a marquee signing. I blame Witt for that though.

just depends on what we get back. Dont want to hurt cap flexibility in 2016 unless you know KD is not coming.

i think gortat plays more center in the 4th this season with Nene's status up in the air and a stretch forward getting more tick at the 4.

Maybe move Nene. But the roster isn't gonna get much retooling. I expect Ernie to stand pretty pat with everything. Ernie gonna give the youngins another year to develop I guess.

Doesn't me that I as a fan like this though. This roster is destined for first/second round exits at best as long as they stay where they are.

except for the mid level and bi-annual deals and a couple trade exceptions there will be no jumping into FAgency.

EG has to wait for the big players to sign and see who wants to take a small deal with a team option(<$5M) to come play for a playoff team.

Unless they move nene, we just have to hope the young guns get even better next year.

they didnt play up to their potential with the bench that they had. With the exception of losing pierce, all of their moves since the Sessions trade have been additive.

They werent major moves, but miller for sessions and oubre/dudley for webster/butler are moves toward a younger, faster, better defensive bench that can still score.

West adds leadership like you said and a nice jumper if he comes. prolly equals out the loss of seraphin although kevin had the greater upside obviously.

It comes down to whether wall can solidify his shot and beal can stay healthy, but these moves certainly wont hurt unless you think the Wizards overachieved last season.

Given the available cap space and the team friendly contracts, this was a fine offseason of modest upgrades. Would have loved to sign West too, but competing with SAN is kinda impossible. Either Seraphin or Gooden could still return so the net additions outweigh the losses.

Oubre is prolly not getting many minutes this year, which will be a mistake. But if his game is half as big as his ego, he'll force Wittman's hand like Otto did in the playoffs.

As always, this season will depend on how healthy Wall and Beal are whether either becomes a significantly better shooter.

Butler and Gooden were both out of the league over the course of the last two years. At some point you have to stop relying on the andre millers of the world and get legitimate bench players.

Anderson shoots like Webster but actually plays defense. One or two out of Anderson, Neal and Dudley could easily see the increase in production that Ariza saw when he played with Wall.

An ECF run will still depend on the evolution of Wall, Beal and now Otto. The car is still the car, but the inside got detailed them mcdonalds fries from 2012 arent under the seat anymore.

should be back by the start of the season. its gonna take some time for him to help the team this year, but they have enough bodies to fill the void if he starts slow. Webster didnt help at all when he came back but i dont know the relative severity of the injuries.

the forward spots are full up with anderson, oubre, webster, gooden, humphries and otto.

ECF or bust.

Regardless of 2016, Wall and Beal need to become all-NBA type players to elevate the team. KD with a bad foot won't get it done alone.

I do think that anderson and neal are the kind of players that can keep us from blowing so many 3rd quarter leads. We arent a team that has a bench full of starters like the clippers or warriors, but you dont need that in the east this year to compete for a top 3 seed.
