I don't feel like there was a ton of soul-searching following their defeat to Japan, are US fans worried about that? I can't say I've been following them a lot but it seems like the featured players are the exact same as 4 years ago, which doesn't bode well for an approach based more on direct play and less on long balls and physicality.

probably should be coming off the bench? not knowledgeable enough about the WNT to know who should be playing instead of her. looks like Alex Morgan is either injured or coming off an injury.

took a wonder strike from Le Sommer to get the score, but the midfield is dominating England's IMO. My girl Louisa Necib with the fancy footwork on her shot attempt wasn't bad too

they are supposed to be far ahead of the 2 other teams. There's been a lot of talk about how the loser of this game might end up the real winner, since finishing 1st in the group virtually guarantees a 1/4 final clash with Germany, while the 2d place would presumably get S Korea and then Canada/China.

Seeing England's Lambertian tactics today leads me to think I know which result they were looking for...

but england seemed to have no real plan except hoof it up the field and hope for some good hold up play. we had some good grit in mid/def, but neither was proving dominant.

thoroughly unimpressed with aluko. she looked gassed from the moment i started watching and offered nothing.

all in all, a pretty english performance on the world stage.

definitely seems like a weak point compared to other much improved areas of the game. And perhaps helps explain why Hope Solo keeps getting all those "second" chances

This WWC has been pretty bad from a spectator perspective. A lot of bad defense and the quality is only in a handful of squads. I love the game, so I'm watching (and I don't have access to BeIN and the Copa America...dammit). But man, it's been rough to watch more times than I'd like to admit.

With that said, there have been some magnificent goals here and there. Lots of individual talent that isn't always translating to team success.

http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2u305p_ange-n-guessan-1-3-ivory-coast-vs-norway-15-06-2015_sport

This is the best example of what I'm talking about here

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQhAb0pqeo4

This CIV team is horrible and great all at the same time. The sole CIV goal vs. Thailand is indicative of what I'm talking about. It's a great run, but it should have never happened at all. She should have been stopped a long time ago.

I can handle a poorer standard of play when the games are exciting. But when refs are missing blatant offsides, disallowing good goals because somebody fell over, giving yellow cards for ghost fouls, that missed Colombian handball!... Shit like that in EVERY game hurts my experience as a spectator way worse than some shitty defense.

It's been pretty horrible all around. There have been some suspect calls all over the place.

This has been a poor WWC all around. I hope things get better now that we are out of the group stage.

The U-23 games were better than this.

In response to Reply # 44

sexism is global. 2nd wave feminism that brought around this era of women's sports was for middle class white women. what's interesting, to me, is that our beckys are generally out athlete-ing (that's the entirety of Wambach's game) others and otherwise playing stupid tactics and selfishly (Rapinoe might be the most selfish player I've ever watched play the game, men's or women's. Ok, excluding CR7. nah, even worse) and nobody's gonna talk about that. but they will bitch about tactics.

the US team is better than their opponents, yet they keep playing low-probability long balls except Rapinoe who tries to dribble everyone. no one is making good runs and i just end up watching the copa because if i want to watch discombobulated teams play, let them at least hate each other and tackle the fuck out of each other.

the US should enjoy this period of becky domination before countries like brazil or spain or argentina start giving a fuck about women's sports and take over in women's soccer like they should be in men's (except for their current situation in the copa america built off of complacency, stupidity, and a coach who doesn't like and can't handle Neymar properly. Dunga sucks as a coach).

Yep....Nothing but long balls...This US Women's team is all about out-muscling their opponent. And that shit might work against teams like Nigeria and Columbia...But the better coached teams like Germany and France are going to beat the US, which lacks any imaginative game plan....

that was...frustrating.
For 70mins that was maybe the best game I've seen from a France squad since the dismantling of Brazil in 06. Then we let up a little bit, Bergeroo decides to take out Thomis (who was absolutely shredding her counterpart all game), and the Germans start to assert themselves despite a still-shaky D and what had to happened happened. Don't think the PK call made sense since I don't see any way she had her arm out voluntarily in that situation, and I've seen no calls multiple times on those, but I'm not exactly objective.
That miss by Thiney, gah. But I regret Necib's in the 1st minute more (although she was splendid the rest of the game)

once we went to PIs it was a done deal, the stats speak for themselves (11/11 on penalties in the WC before the game), plus they're German.

Peeps on the radio were talking about this loss as a building block but I dunno, I'm getting tired of hearing that talking point after another damn tough loss against the damn Germans.

still I was engaged by a women's futbol game like I've never been before. Perhaps even more than by our men in a long time. That's what I want to remember from this WC, more than anything

France v Germany and Japan v Netherlands have been the only good matches. The last WWC in England was far superior to this so far. Canada is not a good country to play host.

Japan really is a joy to watch. It'll be nice to see them beat teams based on philosophy and tactics. God I hope they meet the Americans at some point.

As others have said....the inept goaltending stands out to me. I wonder why the players don't train to just take shots at every opportunity and send forwards in for rebounds.

The optimist in me hopes it's because the other facets of the game have improved so much in such a short time that the inept goalkeeping stands out so much.
But yeah, every.single.game has examples of terrible mistakes and lack of focus from the goalie. It's really hard to forget about it, though all the positive attributes seen elsewhere on the field help.

You want the Americans to beat the Germans and go to the finals? That's the only way. Id rather watch Germany vs Japan.

But it would be nice to see Japan beat down this american team and how mad people will be to see their white darlings crushed.

I would've thought canada would be a great place for it.

Japan didn't have a monster performance and I'm still not sure they can repeat, but that's yet another late winning goal for them, showing at least their mental fortitude is as sharp as their defensive organization. And they definitely have a much easier road to the final, whereas Germany (no trollo) would potentially get there after going through two hard-fought games.

I really appreciate that Japan is trying to play a beautiful game. I'm not so sure it pays well though. Once they play tougher competition it seems like for all their tiki-taka possession and triangular movement.....the goals will inevitably be a product of a singular mistake. A faulty first-touch on defence or something like that. The Americans are opportunistic and willing to win ugly. Which I'm guessing is how this is gonna end.

But they deserve props for trying to play the right way. I hope it works out for them.

Sinclair vs USA during the last summer olympics was probably the greatest single performance i have ever seen in a soccer match. We need her to do something. If not...this could be 0-0 into PK's.

You have to put that chance away when it's 1v1 without any pressure...and then a mistake at the back which results in a deficit.

The US dictated outside of minutes 45-65...Germany coulda obviously taken control on that PK but it was a poor miss, US gets a borderline penalty call (right call in terms of foul but certainly questionable as to where contact started) and that's about that.

Still this was a deserved victory, the US was really dominant most of the game, from the back to the all-important midfield. But I felt Germany was quite poor, after showing little against France (at least for a supposed #1 in the world). Perhaps those extra 30minutes on Friday hurt them. They certainly didn't help on their accuracy in front of the goal...

That US defense is amazing to watch though. I'm really hoping for Japan to go through their semi without ET so we get the rematch we deserve

in the first 5 minutes Germany looked like it was going to be the blowout I expected.

Then the US pretty much dominated the rest of the match except for some spells in the second half.

US was the better team. Better coaching. Got the benefit on two lucky 50/50 calls. Germany missed a penalty. And that was it.

US's second goal was magic.

THANK YOU.

Morgan has looked awful pretty much the whole tournament. If she's hurt, let her work her way back onto the field via superior performances in practice and limited game time. She should not be playing 90 minutes when we have Leroux, Rodriguez, and Press on the bench. If anything, it seemed like Morgan cost our team a goal or two yesterday by forcing shots from bad angles rather than keeping her head up and making the easy pass (for an easy goal).

Push started outside the box,

Also what was that English defender thinking? She had numbers and just recklessly pushes someone on the edge of the box.

Actually, special shout out to Japan in general. I would like to visit within the next two years. I've heard great things.
