"CLE/ATL Game 4: Is tonight the night that unfathomable history is made? "

Should Cleveland complete the sweep tonight, a Lebron James-led team will have advanced to the NBA Finals for the 5th consecutive year - an unimaginable feat in the modern age and an accomplishment that hasn't been done since the 1960's when the Celtics were playing in a segregated era with just a handful of teams to compete against.

Additionally, Lebron James is averaging a triple-double in this series, which is video-game like numbers that is truly something anomalous to observe.

Only 2, I think, have gotten the MVP, title, and a gold medal in one year - Bron, Jordan. Kobe DID come within 2 wins of it

But individually, he was probably best in 2012. What he's doing with this team though, if he takes them all the way? Best year, bar none.

in a way ur right though. if he wills his team to a ring, it would pretty much dead all the (absurd) noise that he cant carry a team (superfriends etc) to a title.

but kyrie looks pretty spry out there (imo they exaggerated the severity of his injuries to get him rest vs this atl team )..and tristan looks more than capable. so i don't know if its as herculean of a task as we're making it out to be even without love

I think a Finals trip has nearly always been expected, even with Love going down (Kyrie, not so much, but I take a Lebron team as the favorite over a Hawks team that's fools gold any day - and Vex, I don't care to argue over the term 'favorite', thanks)...but a title over a historically great team in the Warriors?

That's unfathomable to me. It'd easily be the greatest feat of his career, because it was done over a best of 7 series.

I think it absolutely would be. Just getting to the Finals w/ this first-year, beat up team is a monumental achievement. Winning it all against a historic Warriors team would be lofty.

Love taking a lesser role as the third option is one thing, but I can't see him choosing to sign for the max to play backup to someone who he started over earlier in the year.

The Cavs gave up alot to get him, but given how bad his skills and personality fit this team, I can't see why he would stay.

one would've put a *little* pressure on the Cavs and could've given the Hawks a glimmer of hope

But losing gm 3 made this game academic...because most teams that are down 3-0 know winning 4 straight gms is highly unlikely

Even with Wiggins there. Agreed on Love, with Tristan due an increasingly large check plus Shump being a FA as well, don't see them maxing him after this finals run.

Preseason Bron wouldn't stop talking about how excited he was for people to see the results of his no carb diet and how much leaner and quicker a player he was.

First couple weeks of the season he looked gassed, old, and wasn't playing his usual bully ball. He stopped that no carb mess, took a mini vacation from his team to Miami, and came back a beast again looking like his old self.

HGH is the last bastion of hope Bron haters have...yall not taking that away and if he doesn't perform next year after they introduce testing, shiiiiiiiiiiet.

But how do we feel if he goes 2-4 in the Finals?

I'm willing to give '07 a pass ... even this year (depending on how healthy Kyrie is), but I can see this becoming the narrative if applicable.

But this year wouldn't be the one to do it. The years to really rip on him are '11 and '14. '11 because he quit...like, objectively...quit. '14 because his team got stomped.

07...he dragged that team there, surprisingly.

This year, if he loses...I mean...getting there is an accomplishment. Getting there 5x in a row is a crazier one, but...you can't hate on him on this one.

all those teams were dog shit. the fact they even made the finals is ridiculous. and idk how anyone can hate on his 2007 season. it was video game like.

you can definitely find fault with the heat finals failures (but both times they lost to EXTREMELY good teams, so even then..its kinda dumb to pin it all on him)

$12 million was the max coming into this season, IMHO. After the playoffs I'm uncertain what his worth is.

at this point, you just sicin' it for the TV screen if you sh*t on LeBron-Bron at this juncture. he willed this broken, sorry-on-paper Cleveland Cavaliers squad to the NBA Finals. hate on LeBron's Horseshoe Crab shape up, hate on the fact he whines a touch too hard over calls, and definitely call him out for acting like his big ass can get knocked over by normal sized Two Guards. But what can't be hated on his that cuz is a baller's baller.

Bron done surpassed everyone u listed except Magic.

right today, I hv Bron at #6 all time right behind Magic.

And honestly, the only reason Magic is still ahead is the mystique of
dem 5 rings. there's virtually nothing he does better than Bron on a basketball court except leading a fast break

form is Kobe Bryant a better basketball player than Bird...that's some straight up Laker fandom bias right there...any list of the top 10 players of all-time has Bird on it...not necessarily the case w/Bean - BIrd was a better basketball player in just abt every facet of the game...shooting or scoring/rebounding/passing/leadership/clutchness

And he's definitely not above Bron - if we're really being objective there's no way you or anyone else can put Bean above Lebron

You also can't put Kobe above Duncan either - Duncan is by far an easier player to build around between the two and he won championships as really the centerpiece of all *5* of his whereas we all Know who was the centerpiece of those first 3 LA won - Duncan had more of an impact on both ends of the floor than Bean

For all the talk abt TP being their best player in the last few seasons and Kawhi transitioning into the franchise player, Duncan was still their BEST and most reliable player when it mattered...at damn near 40 yrs old

Having said that, if Bron pulls this off and gets a chip this season, all the talk abt who was better between him and Bean will dead at that point...

I'm not sure why the title count is going to change his greatness. If they get to game 7 and lose on a buzzer in that game it doesn't change who he is.

The rings matter as far as him taking the top spot. Jordan was 6-0 in the finals. If Bron loses, he'll be 2-4 in the finals. How can that not matter as far as him being the GOAT? We all know he's the greatest player playing today. Been that way for close to a decade.

the GOAT? I just need some clarity on this once and for all...

Because the titles argument seems to only work for and apply to when we're talking abt Jordan compared to whomever else....but when it's brought up that Russell has 11 championships to Jordan's 6 the goalpost seems to move...and while Russell wasn't undefeated in the finals (I don't think) his resume is still more impressive THAN ANY OTHER NBA GREAT if we're just using titles as the ultimate measuring stick for GOAT...

and has a couple of rings, why are the end results going to change where you rank him? if the cavs make it to game 7, LeBron averages 40, 13, and 10 in the series, but they lose it on a curry buzzer beater, that makes LeBron not as great as player x?

since he made it to (5 straight) championships, i'm not sure why wins and loses dictate over the full body of work for ppls rankings.

Cleveland doesn't get a 1 shot away parade, or a 1 shot away banner, or 1 shot away rings.

Does anyone even remember that Tim Duncan was a layup away from number 6? No, he just has 5. Did he even come that close or did I make that up? I honestly don't remember lol. But no one cares how close anyone came to xyz when comparing that to a player who does have xyz and that's completely fair.

Would Lebron still be an all time great? Of course. But this conversation is beyond that.

LOL....how is that a good way to rank players? if tim duncan makes that layup (or if kwawhi makes a free throw if i remember correctly), we completely change the narrative for where he is ranked due to the end result, bc why?
if bron only averages 20, 5, and 3 on 25% shooting, but the cavs win the title, he is going be above player x bc he he got the ring, bc why?

Of course they matter in terms of all-time Legacy. Bron will have to win one in Cleveland in order for staunch critics to elevate him into his rightful top 3 all-time status. But his individual accomplishments overshadow virtually anybody who ever played the game, and what he has managed to do w/ inferior teams/talent/coaching has to be factored in.

Nuance is important. Cats who just want to make it about a title-count discussion almost *always* have bias towards a player who has more rings, and almost *always* overstate that player's individual achievements.

they didn't exactly blow the doors off of either first round opponent

and

they flat out quit last night.

they have to come out next season on a redemption mission and destroy the league like the Ws did this season

for me to take them seriously

they have a great starting 5

resigning Carroll and upgrading the bench is all they really need to do in the offseason

We have a good starting 5. We still need somebody that can takeover in the clutch. The team as constructed will not compete for a title IMO. How can we do what Golden State did when we don't have a Curry or Klay that can get ridiculously hot?

First time in the modern era they made the Conference Finals. First time in 20 years they finished with the best record in the East.

And they have most of their core still in tact for next year. Considering that they have some spending room, with Millsap and Carroll both UFAs, they might even have room to offer both big money if they want. Tough call on who if they only want to bring back one... but even if they lose one of those pieces, they bring back EVERYONE else (except Antic, who is a restricted free agent).

and I'm glad we didn't get exposed sooner in the playoffs. Once we struggled with Brooklyn I was just happy we made it to the conference finals. We need a go to player or else this will be the case next season. Our biggest problem is that we can't attract the big free agents so I'm not sure how we can get that superstar we need.
