Take your pick, they need literally everything. BPA for sure
May 19th 2015

bottom line his presence wont affect the decision one iota
May 20th 2015
63
      clarkson dont deserve shit man.
May 20th 2015
26
If the Lakers had the 3/4/5 pick, sure
May 20th 2015
29
Maybe not all 30 but at least 25 teams would take Okafor #2
May 20th 2015
31
                     Cosign.
May 20th 2015
32
Well again its a situational thing they got 2nd pick
May 21st 2015

May 19th 2015
5
a Randle-Okafor front line is soft defensively, if Minny takes KAT...
May 19th 2015
6
Randle can slide down to the 3 if we can get a PF
May 19th 2015
8
hed also have a tough time guarding other SFs
May 19th 2015
14
Randle's a lot quicker and has really good feet
May 19th 2015
16
I think you can only play him situationally as a three, not full time
May 20th 2015
22
I kinda agree... I don't see him as a full time SF
May 20th 2015
27
                               His feet aren't *that* quick.
May 20th 2015
42
I wouldn't necessarily say Towns will be better than Julius
May 20th 2015
58
so here is where I am with the pick...
May 19th 2015
9
WCS aint it.
May 19th 2015
10
a 7footer who can defend 3 positions has value
May 19th 2015
15
he cant defend 3 positions inthe NBA
May 19th 2015
17
      He sure can
May 20th 2015
19
           No he cant.
May 20th 2015
25
The difference between those guys and WCS...
May 20th 2015
39
Hey man, I'm not saying he's a better defender than those guys, but...
May 20th 2015
53
Maybe Nerlens could, but he won't
Jun 27th 2015

Willy Cauley-Javelle McGee gonna get rich being tall and long
May 20th 2015
36
                *Willy TRILL Cauley-Javelle McGee
May 20th 2015
52
That is a possibility. I watched him for 3 years.
May 20th 2015
54
I dont really have any confidence in him but maybe he is a late bloomer
May 20th 2015
65
Exactly what we've said about Javelle
May 21st 2015
68
Nah I abandoned that with him pretty quickly
Jul 05th 2015
182
Great, so you sign him in 5 years.
May 20th 2015
18
they are either gonna take okafor or trade the pick IMO
May 20th 2015
23
Towns going number one though
May 19th 2015
11

May 20th 2015
33
For what?
May 20th 2015
34
      Trade With The Lakers
May 20th 2015
35
           Water is wet.
May 20th 2015
37
I mean what would they offer the Lakers?
May 20th 2015
38
                Carmelo.
May 20th 2015
40
To make the money work, the Lakers would have to deal... a lot.
May 20th 2015
43
Why on earth would the Lakers would do that deal?
May 20th 2015
50
The only reason Melo isnt currently a Laker is because he turned LA down
May 20th 2015
51
I'm not following your logic. You're tugging at very loose threads there
May 20th 2015
59
                          Lakers turn it down.

May 30th 2015

Not really, the Lakers only have about $35M in team salary right now
May 20th 2015
66
You know thats not happening so stop it
May 20th 2015
44
I don't *know* that, which side turns it down?
May 20th 2015

May 20th 2015
55
until they got Bron, Cleveland had 4 top 5 draft picks
May 20th 2015
56
price tag doesn't really matter much when the Lakers have no $ invested
May 20th 2015
57
The fact that we have no money invested is the entire point.
May 20th 2015
60

That's their decision. Something feels iffy to me about Okafor. No idea on Mudiay but had that *wow* factor on video. I am hoping the Sixers find a way to trade down a spot or two, get an asset and take Winslow. Probably go with Russell though, he seems to be heading to No. 3 on the big board.

If you had a generational talent at point guard--which is what you *should* be looking at in the top 5--then you would send Jordan Clarkson to KABUL, let alone a seat on the bench.

He was an average-ish player in the making who had the ball a lot. Want to know my thoughts on his season? Three words, so fucking what.

I do think they will take a big, but if a Chris Paul or even a Deron were there, they'd take him in a heartbeat.

The Lakers have no "cornerstones" or "building blocks." They have potentially serviceable players like Clarkson and Davis, but no one that you would let affect your selection with a pick of this magnitude.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Im not looking at it in a vacuum. Im looking at it in this situation given the facts we have now with draft position + need.

Yea except they have #2 and the guys who are most likely generational talents here are Okafor and KAT. Mudiay and Deangelo are nice, but they aren't Chris Paul. Lest we also forget that the only "top 5 pg" in recent history thats led his team to a title is Parker unless Kyrie does it this year.

The lakers biggest hole this past season (and they had plenty of them) was their lack of any interior defense/ big presence. Even when Randle comes back thats not what he provides. Maybe deserves was the wrong word but Jordan showed he could play down the stretch. There's obvious talent there on both ends of the floor despite the high usage rate.

as for their inside presence, i liked what i saw out of ed davis at times, i wonder what kind of money he will command. black came along as the year went on but i dont know if he is actually decent or just was taking advantage of garbage time matchups.

They have the second pick and their absolute biggest hole was inside presence on both ends. Their coach is Traditional ass Byron Scott. Theyre going big.

Those are the guys there. Their biggest needs (because Clarkson is pretty good) is at the Bigs and the 3. If Clarkson sucked theyd need a guard much more.

When me and my boys thought they had 4/5 the talk was Mudiay, Deangelo, Stanley, Winslow.

I thought they should either take Deangelo or Stanley but leaned towards Stanley. To me Deangelo and Clakrson were a nice interchangeable piece. They either couldve started at either guard spot, and while Kobe is still in play, one of them would play 6th man.
but

Stanley fills their other huge weak spot this season. The 3. Kelly and Wesley arent gonna cut it there. Justise would too, but you guys know Im a Stanley guy.

At the end of the day, I also think you guys are selling Clarkson short. The only thing that hurts him is he;s 22 (aka old)

But he had a great season as a starter playing pg as a rookie.
His upside is also pretty high.
He's already a better rebounder than Mudiay and Deangelo will ever be. He's a better defender and offensively he aint shabby either.

Say what you want about garbage stats. Then we owe Wiggins the same criticism. People are busting nuts over Wiggins stats once he started to get rolling, Clarksons #s deserve some nut busting too.

As a starter of 38 games (almost half a season) where he was barely playing at all before starting this is what he did.
15.8 ppg 4.2 rpg, 5.0 apg 1.1 spg on 45.8% fg 31% 3fg 2.2turnovers
Post all star break even better
16.7 ppg 4.6 rpg 5.4 apg 1.0 spg on 47.9% fg 2.4 turnovers

To me you can argue about garbage time and you can argue about usage - One of the things most young guards dont do well in that position is shoot at a high%. Jordan is a great finisher at the rim and open court, and his mid range pull up game off the dribble is pretty mature for his age.

His wone weak spot offensively is the 3 ball, but that can get a lot better.

He didnt turn the ball over a whole lot relatively speaking.

Here's his shot chart:
http://vorped.com/1-nba/2014-2015/player/1771/jordan-clarkson/shotchart/
That midrange is pretty mature for a rookie. Lots of Rookies are best in the deep paint and from 3. He's got some zones in the paint where he can stop and hit which is great for a pg who can get the hole.

His upside is gonna be tied to his 3 point shot and his continued feel of the game. The reason I think its so high is because he's a A-/B+ level athlete in the league. He has the physical tools and size.

Early on in the season he was jacking shots left right and didnt know how to run an offense. You could see as the season progressed that he really figured it out. He started to figure out real quick how to play at different speeds. he didnt make a lot of bonehead plays and his defense was average to above average though he had some lapses at times.

he'd be a unique Small forward really... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gyO4tJ83BII

I don't see the potential defensive liabilities something that couldn't be overcome..

he could pair at the forward with a LaMarcus Aldridge....or a Kevin Love.... with either Okafor or Town....

that's a big versatile front line...

His main asset defensively in college was his strength, not his quickness. He's fine in terms of quickness for the 4... but I don't see him defending wings on the perimeter dribble drive effectively at all. At least not consistently.

If y'all brought in LMA or Love to pair with Towns or Jah, Julius would either be traded or be the sixth man.

I want Town....period.

I'm not as sold on Okafor as others. The more I watch him...he's slow footed and too much of his offensive game is below the rim for a guy that big. Town has more offensive versatility and looks like a better athlete...

if Town goes #1..which I could see happening.... Then I think the Lakers have some options beyond Okafor....obviously if they like Okafor enough..they take him...

but they could also go after DeAngelo Russell...and look to sign a FA Center ....like a DeAndre or a Gasol.... Russell looks like a special player...Clarkson is a combo guard that could work well with him..

also..the Lakers have to consider the value of the #2 pick. If there is a team that really wants Okafor or Russell or Mudiay..... if a team wanted to swap picks and throw in a player....as long as we wouldn't be moving down too far I'd be okay....another player I'm really high on is Cauley-Stein.

but either way...we straight.

Well actually he can do anything you want but he's not gonna be good at it.

There hasnt been a recent big prospect from college/hs basketball that can defend 3 positions consistently well in the NBA, not even AD. Not Camby, Not Tyson (HS), not KG. WCS is not a better defender than all those guys out the box.

... is that WCS is probably faster than any of them except for young KG. Laterally *and* end-to-end. Davis might be as fast, but even he doesn't have WCS' instincts regarding biting on pump fakes, staying in front of your man, etc. WCS just doesn't fuck up on that end. His fundamentals on that end are game-changing.

I'm not saying WCS should defend elite wings in the NBA... but if he gets caught on the switch and has to defend an elite wing in isolation, he'd do better than probably any big man in the NBA today.

IMO a bad move to take him away from the rim like that, and not something Brown will be doing. Good to know that he can play switches effectively, and pick n rolls, too. I am sure WCS will be able to do those things also. I think that is what matters, I am not getting the lust for matchup versatility from bigs to be honest. Why would I pull my rim protector 18-25 feet from the basket intentionally?

In response to Reply # 9

having the pick now gives the team some direction. they are pretty sure they will have no pick next year so no sense fucking around and wasting the season. if the right deal is there (e.g. cousins), they can make it. if the right FA is there (e.g. aldridge), they can make a strong pitch. if they want to sign some veterans at bloated but brief terms (e.g. rondo) they can do that, too. now they dont have to spend another year in limbo.

but i dont think they will ruminate too much on who they take if they do make the pick. you dont pass on a big generally. i am excited about the choice between mudiay, russell, winslow and trading down for the sixers, too, i think they have the real broad set of options where as the lakers are pretty much at 1) okafor 2) trade. but like you i am not sold on okafor's game carrying over to the pros AS IS. that said, he is 19 years old and he has a number of things (footwork) that are way above his age and some things that cant be taught (touch around the basket) in his favor.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The cloak is a sign of shit getting real. When people see the cloak they know it's time for business.

Longo probably somewhere partying off this. Clearly, Ryan Kelly has shown he belongs in this league hopefully in a Lakers uniform to bring some of that highly intense toughness to teams.

Everybody wants one of those bigs. The problem for the Knicks is... they don't have nearly enough to trade to get one. What would the deal be, the 4th pick, Quincy Acy, and Ricky Ledo? FOH. Plenty of other teams have far more enticing offers to dangle out there.

Unless we got the 4 and next year's pick or some shit, I can't see it. It takes us from a young group with a shit ton of money and a bright future to an old group with zero chance of contending.

It's the sort of extremely short sighted move on the Lakers end that Dolan would actually push for.

despite them having Jerry Bruckenheimer produce a 'come to the Lakers, Melo' movie for him to screen while at Staples plus Kobe making his pitch to sign his 'good friend'.

Why am I to assume that the Lakers are somehow being run better currently, wouldn't take a flyer on Melo for the sake of a couple draft slots or that Feel/Mitch/Jeanie/Jimmy wouldn't potentially push their chips to the table for a little game of career Russian Roulette?

Which side turns that deal down?

I'm not sure.

We have waaaaaay too many options right now to settle for an old, expensive gunslinger.

You explained the loose connecting threads, but can you explain what makes that a good deal for L.A, barring the very unlikely scenario where NY aldo gives us the #4 and takes Young off our hands in the process?

Even then, that's not better than the youth movement we have in front of us. Youth with upside tha can develop on rookie scale while we have gobs of money to pay quality free agents, especially after Kobe (hopefully, mercifully) leaves next year.

Why on earth would we sacrifice that for Melo?

Honestly, 2-3 years ago, no brainer...you take Melo. But after he turned the Lakers down to stay with that dumpster fire of a franchise, with no prospects on the team other than the #4 pick (at LEAST we have capspace, Randle, Black, and Clarkson...along with the #2 pick), why on earth would the Lakers make that deal?

Sure, LA is predicated on winning with superstars...but a Melo in his 12th year ain't that dude. Is Okafor? Is Randle? Who knows? But it's at least a possibility whereas Melo is not.

Is the low, low contract price.

Melo isn't doing anything that'd help the Lakers, AND is going into year 2 of a 5 year, $100 million dollar deal. We're shedding Kobe's salary next year. No way we lock ourselves into a deal with a fat, busted, unmotivated Melo for 4 years when we could have 2 top 7 rookies at 3 mil or something a year.

past this upcoming season once the peanut-headed contract albatross' contract mercifully ends, plus max contracts could damn near double in the new CBA heading into 2016.

If you think the Lakers are just gonna be happy to slow and steadily rebuild while sitting on the sidelines come playoff time for a few more years, I don't know what team you grew up watching.

every year since the beginning of time, it's in your franchise DNA, don't run from it.

The only reason you didn't in 2014 and potentially won't in 2015 (though I still see them doing so in some form) is because no one will even take it in the late-career-Kobe-stealing-money-still-taking-all-the-shots-or-calling-shots-in-streetclothes era.

I do not think Mitch/Jimmy are turning down a pitch to take Carmelo just to move down two spots in this year's draft, sorry.

I think they do that without hesitation if it's offered and who knows, Feel may do so.

He could even get in a car and make that deal in person rather than Skype, probably wouldn't tho.

>every year since the beginning of time, it's in your
>franchise DNA, don't run from it.

This notion is flawed at it's core since we've rarely had cap space to spend on big names that weren't coming at a discount and those big trades always happen for transcendent players.

Basically , if you're using history as your guide, Melo doesn't even come close to fitting the pattern. You'd like to see us blow the pick, five years of cheap player development, and what essentially amounts to 90% of available cap space over the next couple of years on a guy like Melo because you know it's a horrible move. It's not happening and there's zero reason to speculate on it unless you're "throwing it out there".

We've never had a position like we so jow and thus, there's no historical blueprint to lend credence to your tea leaves. Except, of course, for the one deal that DOES make some sense and has at least a tiny sliver of credibility: Boogie, and ONLY because of his coach.

Make no mistake, the #2 is available for the right price and Melo is absolutely not meeting that price.

We both know that's not true. An objective look at who went where last year tells a consistent story: movement was limited due to the salary cap structure and that extra year proved to be an awfully big incentive to stay put.

If you think Brawn went HOME because he doesn't want to play with Kobe, you're being dishonest and ignoring the fact that everyone who spurned the Lakers also spurned Houston and a GREAT opportunity two play with two guys who are top three at their position.

The facts follow the money, not speculation, easily debunked quotes from and anonymous sources, or Jared Dudley spitting an opinion that didn't have a factual basis.

>I do not think Mitch/Jimmy are turning down a pitch to take
>Carmelo just to move down two spots in this year's draft,
>sorry.

Wait, do you mean Melo AND #4 for the #2? yeah, they probably take that deal and likely role dice on Mudiay or Porzinga. #2 for Melo? ZERO chance when we can keep ALL our assets and sign multiple players in the next two years.

>I think they do that without hesitation if it's offered and
>who knows, Feel may do so.

Again: totally baseless speculation.

>He could even get in a car and make that deal in person rather
>than Skype, probably wouldn't tho.

Could. Won't.

he broke his leg in the first NBA game he played and its past the point of counting college stats.

Look, Julius Randle is not a small forward.

I'm fine with pretending like he is or could be if it makes Mitch/Jimmy that much more likely to pull the trigger on a big.....but if we're "being reality"(c) he's not a small forward.

The best course of action will be to draft whichever big Minny doesn't take, fill out the roster with our remaining picks based on need, keep Hill this year, sign whoever we can to one year deals to meetthe cap minimum, let our youth develop, and make a play for Westbrook and whoever else is available next year.

We're going to throw money at anyone who will listen, but the only guys worth giving big money and years to right now are restricted and will most likely be matched and we'll wind up offering money to older guys who will be in decline before their deal runs out (Aldridge, Gasol), guys who really aren't worth the money they'll want (Rondo), guys who won't come (DJ) or Love, who I'm dubious about building around.

I'd much rather let KAT/Jah, Randle, Clarkson and co develop without 'win now' pressure to appease Kobe and dumbass, short sighted stans so that when they DO develop after a year or two, we're still paying them rookie scale while we have gobs of money to throw at younger, better FA's than we currentl ly have on the market.

Outside of a draft night trade for Boogie where awe fleece Sacto with the #2 pick and something like Hill/Young (sorry, not giving up Randle) or snagging DJ from the Clips (he's at least younger, more athletic than Gasol) to play with Randle while we draft Russel.. I can't see a whole lot else that makes sense this summer.

What does this even mean? Did you even read my post? Clearly, we're in good position. My post is all about the possibility that this front office is going to squander the long term potential we have for short term gains that won't amount to anything close to what we could have if we actually commit to the rebuilding process with patience for long term.

Based on what Mitch has done in terms of structuring the team to have 3 max slots available (1 starting this summer and 2 next year after Kobe's deal is done and the cap increases to around 100 million), along with Randle-Towns/Okafor-Clarkson...I think he has understood this entire time what the end game is.

Since we have those 3 slots to play with, giving Love a max this year doesn't mean he has to be the guy but rather one part of the foundation.

When that cap goes up, contracts will go up with it. By that point I doubt we'll have enough to accommodate a true max deal if we spend big on someone this year. That's part of why I prefer someone like Butler, because his max is smaller than what Love, Gasol, etc will get and he's younger.

I also prefer the idea of letting a young front line of Randle and KAT/Jah develop rather than throw money at aging big today while we keep Hill and Ed. Why pay Love when we haven't seen Randle has yet? We're not in a position to contend either way, so let the youth develop while we maintain financial flexibility for a couple of home run hitters who can be lured by the young, deep, and dynamic foundation we've built in addition to the money?

Frankly, I just don't want to see us become the Knicks.....that team who refuses to truly rebuild because the fans and media are two dumb to see the big picture. I think the long game is still better played by sitting on this money unless we can poach a guy like Butler or Draymond Green (though not for the max).

He would have been one of the youngest players in the draft. It was likely very much worth it to climb the rookie scale, because he is not like a college kid who isn't making any money (purportedly, at least). He probably earned close to the salary of a late first-rounder in Spain this year, plus he played fewer games but in a pretty big role.

dunno, i havent seen him play for real. i try to watch the high profile euros actually play but this year i was not able to see any of the three real high profile foreign players.

he is a home-run pick but like you said at two you want someone with a high ceiling but a bankable baseline, too. i still think the lakers should go big.

was really hoping the Wolves would take him...obviously Town was the #1 guy..

but from jump I knew that if Oakfor was there....we would have to at least consider Russell.

We got the most complete player in this draft.... along with Clarkson..both really combo guards with good size...

he got mad dish skills...that potentially attracts free agents

but I'm loving the Anthony Brown and Larry Nance Jr picks. Both athletic wings...Brown can shoot.... Nance can finish...and both have good size..

can't say this could have gone any better for us tonight..

We're a good option for a free agent here...a couple of them actually...

Russell, fine, I mean at that pick you would get someone promising for sure.

I'll distrust the later picks until they make some good ones. Nance Jr and Brown are both pretty low-ceiling prospects to me. Brown at best is a bench player. I get that guys like Rick Fox and Ariza were important but I doubt he is as good as either one. Nance Jr I haven't seen much, but the question seems to be between role player or bust.

You think they bring back Ed Davis? I thought he played pretty well for them.

On the big name big men available this year, or we find a taker to absorb Young's salary. If he drops down his demand to around 5 m then I can see keeping him.

Jordan Hill is gone...Davis is a free agent.... Tariq Black will be back, and I'm sure we'll try and sign a big...but Upshaw could provide some depth for us..

hopefully his health is cool..

I actually think Ashley could be a sleeper to make the roster...

he's gonna push your boy ryan Kelly...

either way the Lakers stacked up some nice talent tonight.

111. "Lakers prepping 4yr $80 million off for LaMarcus"
In response to Reply # 0

the hour of the cloaking is upon us.

http://www.latimes.com/sports/lakers/la-sp-lakers-bresnahan-20150628-story.html

his was supposed to be the warmup summer, the one during which the training wheels get slapped on and everybody practices for the Real Summer of Kevin (Durant, not Love)..

The Lakers, though, have already turned lemons into something sweet, moving up in the draft despite the gnashing jaws of Steve Nash-shaped despair and grabbing dynamic point guard D'Angelo Russell second overall.

All their financial eggs now go into the big-man basket. They want to talk to LaMarcus Aldridge, he wants to listen, and if all goes well for both sides, the four-time All-Star signs a four-year, $80-million deal to be the Lakers' power forward.

Free agency begins Tuesday and Aldridge turns 30 two weeks later, a minor asterisk for a player who averaged a career-high 23.4 points last season and also 10.2 rebounds.

Portland made it past the first round once in Aldridge's nine years there, and though the Lakers were coming off their worst season ever (21-61, ugh), you can bet they'd pitch him on a rapid revival.

Aldridge already owns a home in Orange County, his initials are tailor-made for the Lakers, and it just so happens that his good plays were rewarded at Portland home games by an audio snippet of Randy Newman's "I Love L.A."

The Lakers have enough money for only one big-name free agent, gathering about $23 million in spending power after declining the $9-million option on free-agent center-forward Jordan Hill in a couple of days. Aldridge would make almost $19 million next season after pulling down $16.3 million last season.

The Lakers' only big men going into free agency are Tarik Black and Robert Sacre after they presumably make the latter's sub-$1-million contract guaranteed by Tuesday's deadline.

They boxed themselves into a big-man corner by passing on Duke center Jahlil Okafor to draft Russell, putting the Ohio State point guard next to promising Jordan Clarkson while setting up the Lakers' backcourt "for the next 10 years," according to a near-giddy team source.

Perhaps a quick shot of reality is needed.

The Lakers have had problems getting free agents to take their money in recent years. Dwight Howard spurned them for less money in Houston, Carmelo Anthony said thanks but no thanks, and Pau Gasol took less to go to Chicago.

The only big name they signed lately was Kobe Bryant, who accepted a two-year, $48.5-million extension in 2013 before returning from a torn Achilles'.

The Lakers need a Plan B if Aldridge says no. Two teams from his home state, San Antonio and Dallas, will reportedly court him too.

It would take some persuasion to get Clippers center DeAndre Jordan to take less money and leave L.A.'s more talented team. The Lakers love his rebounding and shot-blocking, like many teams, and Dallas will also recruit him heavily.

It's harder to figure what to make of Love, who had an off year in Cleveland and said in February there was not a scenario where he'd play for the Lakers. He might meet with them next week even if it's only a ploy to ensure a maximum offer from the Cavaliers, reportedly the favorites to retain him.

Marc Gasol has no interest in the Lakers because of the uneasy last few years his brother spent with them, according to numerous people familiar with the situation. Versatile big man Greg Monroe, oft-injured Brook Lopez and his workman-like brother, Robin, are other alternatives at center.

If the Lakers strike out, they could try re-signing Hill for less and chase swingman Jimmy Butler, who could ease into the hole vacated soon by Bryant. The problem is Chicago's expected action of matching any offer sheet the restricted free agent signs.

Whatever happens, it's simple table-setting for a year from now. The Lakers will have double the fun when Bryant's contract is off the books ($25 million next season) and the salary cap jumps from $67 million to about $90 million with the NBA's gigantic new TV deal.

Even if the Lakers sign a max free agent now, they'll have more than enough to join the Durant free-for-all and add another big-name free agent too.

Their only players currently on the 2016-17 cap are Russell, fellow first-rounder Larry Nance Jr., Nick Young (remember him?) and Julius Randle, assuming they pick up his third-year option. It adds up to only $15 million, though money must be earmarked for Clarkson, who becomes a restricted free agent after only two seasons because he was a second-round draft pick.

This summer has already been entertaining. The real show comes in a year.

I would think that getting big time playrs to take a discount to team up with another big time player is more doable today..

I mean...

LaMarcus and DeAndre BOUF coming to the Lakers would be a pretty major power move...

is pretty doable....

kobe contract coming off the books..

young point guard who loves to dish...

Randle....

Clarkson...

Aldridge and a Center teaming up in LA puts them back on the map immediately with room to flip something else in a couple more years..

taking less has appeal right now to team up in LA...

It's great to have 2 rookies with huge potential but established stars want to win, not be involved in a rebuild. Our location and franchise clout is definitely a draw but it doesn't overshadow being a 21 win team.

I think Tobias Harris would fit very nicely with this core and then we have to pick up a big. We have to show promise and the potential to step into contention soon if we plan to actually win big FA's next summer rather than only being another player.

At least one of them or else its an even longer crawl up. Honestly theres some intrinsic pressure to win being LA, but if this wasnt Kobe's last season it wouldnt be as big unfortunately.

Id be worried about overpayiong a guy like Tobias (yea yea, TV money blah blah) who ends up being more of a Rudy Gay type player which is fine, but not what the lakers need-- then you hurt some of your flexibility for when Kobe does retire. WIth the misses, I think now the option has to be a long play.

Another good draft next year

But...realistically, they could get Tobias and convince Greg Monroe to come and then fill out the bench and they'd have a promising start.

Russell
Kobe
Tobias
Randle
Monroe

They wouldn't be the best defensive unit but they'd be able to score.

Then when Kobe bounces and the cap increases, that's 30 mil off the books added to a 23 mil increase. Enough for 2 stars at 26 mil each.

And I think if they pull off that starting 5. They'd win at least 35-45 games next year, land in the lottery (outside the top 3) lose their pick to the sixers BUT, they look better to FA's because they've improved, Kobe's retired (LOL @ that making them look better) and they have a GANG of $$$ to pass out...aaaaaaaaand, it's LA.

Optimistically, they could be a playoff team in 2016-17 and depending on the FA's they can net next summer could make a playoff run that season. If they are smart, they can then try to go hard at the 2017 FA class given another cap jump and good cap management.

But...Kid Buss might just keep flubbing it all up lol

Sign Tobias Harris to a 15/per.

Trade for Hibbert - though I doubt the Pacers want Nick Young and Ryan Kelly.

Or...just roll with the kids and see what we have.

I want someone who can help carry the load so that our young players don't get too overwhelmed. Paying Tobias accomplishes that goal. It's not a swing for the fences move, but I think a point like Russell might well maximize what we can get out of Tobias. He's only 22 and most likely hasn't hit his ceiling. With the new cap looming, that's not a bad gamble.

He could have a negative impact on Randle, Russell, and Clarkson. I wouldn't trust him to be with that young core.

But if the money is right and he starts acting up, you can deal him.

Looks like the beat guy at the Star called the dumping of Hibbert "the biggest win of the Pacers offseason" lol.

The Lakers take his bloated opt-in year--which becomes even more bloated with the trade kicker--and now they can add maybe one more MLE-level FA (not sure if they also have their MLE).

Odd deal IMO, I mean I guess it's worth a flyer but it's a challenging situation. If he sucks, you just spent $15M+ on a bum, but if he's good what is the upshot? Paying him out the nose next year? Giving Philly your draft pick? That sounds great to me. GO ROY!

I wanted to find the Comic Book Guy's "Much smarter than you, Hib-bert" clip but Fox protects their copyrights in a major way.

And not the contract?

we got a guy on an expiring deal and preserved some cap room. Would it somehow make more sense to spend that money to lock up anyone else on the board?

So we get a guy who, at minimum, gives us something decent defensively at a time when we missed out on everyone worth paying on a deal where we spend money we have to spend anyways without having to commit long term. How is that anything but a net positive for us?

Why would you think we'd end up paying through the nose for him next year? We'll have 45-50 million or so to spend next year, depending on whether or not we can get rid of Young and/or Kelly. We get a year to see what our kids do and see if we can entice a quality free agent to come without Kobe.

There's pretty much zero downside to getting him. It definitely improves the Lakers in the short term while maintaining long term financial health.

Maintain financial flexibility while employing NBA caliber players rather than D-Leaguers?

Philly fan minds are blown.

Philly would be tanking with the hope of keeping that top 3 protected pick and gambling they won't be good enough to lose it, if they were in the Lakers situation.

Why put up a 30-35-win season with no playoffs? With a rental player? There is nothing going forward there at all.

As with the Kobe signing, these are money decisions. They can't afford to become an acrid team, it will diminish the brand and lower prices. That's the difference between the Lakers and the overwhelming majority of the league.

BTW for all this "ZOMG TANKING, HOW GAUCHE!" talk, the Sixers have yet to actually hit the very bottom with the worst record in the league. That says something for the "honest effort" of the rest of the league, you have a team actively trying to lose and teams still suck worse or roughly as much as they do.

It's a league where the talent gaps are big. You can't just build a good offensive line or defense corps or starting rotation and get by with that. You either have the weapons or you don't.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

They've got their young pieces in Russell, Randle, and to a lesser extent Clarkson. If they show promise this year, and the team is improving and on the rise, they'll have a chance at the top guys next summer.

You traded for the contract? Not exactly, I mean a team that was dumping a longer deal for Hibbert's would be "trading for the contract." You guys traded for a stopgap that could pan out into more and what I outlined was the lose/lose of that. Either he performs well for a year and they wind up having him longer for more than he's worth (he is not going to have some long, stellar career IMO) or even if he walks and the cap room frees up anew, you guys wind up losing your pick as a result of acquisitions like him and Lou Williams.

IMHO the Lakers should either be looking for young, under-utilized guys to actually build with or continuing to tank. Their potential cornerstones are both super young. I get that tanking with expensive ass seats and a big TV is an expensive proposition, but looking at a long-term scenario I don't see where one year (or more) of Roy Hibbert fits in.

They didn't give up much to get him and the most likely scenario is that he stays for one year, but overall it's just an OK move to me and the only long-term potential is negative.

>So we get a guy who, at minimum, gives us something decent

Oh, he and Williams definitely make them better *right today*, but that was not exactly a demanding task.

If he plays even kind of well, he'll be pretty expensive to very expensive. But he'll probably be just all right and so will the team. Shooting for the middle is the worst thing you can do in the NBA, I think. But yes they are in a position to be more ambitious next year with the departure of Kobe and his salary.

>There's pretty much zero downside to getting him. It
>definitely improves the Lakers in the short term while

The downside is limited but significant IMO. They took what they could get and it was OK but if it winds up costing them their pick after another non-playoff year--which I think it will--I would consider that a downside.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Look, if we strike out on Durant than we're in bad position anyways. At least now we have quality players in place so that we're not truly terrible when it's time to go after free agents next year, and Hibbert is a guy who can be signed last because we (should) have his bird rights.

These additions will help a young team like ours by relaxing some of the pressure. Hibbert gets a second chance, Upshaw gets to develop with significant minutes at backup, Lou can score enough to lighten the load a little, and Bass gives us quality minutes at the 4/5, depending on the team we're playing.

The only way we overpay to keep Hibbert is if we get Durant and Randle/Russell have good years.

If JC improves even a little over last year and any of our other rooks have a good year we'll have built a solid core that a single signed star could elevate in a big way. Then, having Hibbert is a luxury, quite literally, because he'd be the guy we start paying tax on.

Either way he'll most likely get a short term deal at a team option.

Good point about the Bird rights, but I am still not really inspired by the move. For Durant to show even a modicum of interest, both Russell and Randle have to show a lot this year, and the Thunder have to be very iffy. I don't think either of those conditions will be met, let alone both.

I don't have any doubt that these guys improve the team in the short run, that is not the issue. The issues are two-fold: What impact they have in the long run and if it's worth forfeiting a high pick this year for that potential (as well as the immediate salvation of undoubtedly declining ticket sales).

>The only way we overpay to keep Hibbert is if we get Durant
>and Randle/Russell have good years.

I mean I think if he plays well, they will keep him. He is the master of his own destiny in L.A.

It all depends how he performs but like I said I look at him as a bad investment over the long haul and if that is the case then this just seems like a wheel-spinning move. That said, absent a commitment to tanking and #AssetLife, I probably would have made the same move.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Considering he signed for 7 and after Hibbert's trade kicker, we had about 5....that means someone is moving by July 8th (Hibbert trade isn't final until the 9th).

As for Bass...solid move. Spaces well, great in the PnR, works his tail off in general.

didn't get his top targets, but to get Hibbard on the last year of his contract for only a 2nd round pick.... AND convince Hibbard to waive his trade kicker.... That's big...

it's a win win getting Hibbard..it's one year..he's working hard with a new personal trainer, and at a minimum will be a good defener and rim protector..

you got him for year...you can bring him back if he balls...or you can use him as trade bait..

either way for a 2nd round pick that's a steal for us..

Let's look at this...

going into this season the Laker have 8 guys who are likely to be on the roster who will be either in their 2nd year or rookies..

Julius Randle
Jordan Clarkson
Tarik Black
Jabari Brown
D'Angelo Russell
Anthony Brown
Larry Nance Jr.
Robert Upshaw

beyond that, you replaced the following guys (so far)

Wayne Ellington
Ronnie Price
Jordan Hill
Ed Davis
Wes Johnson
Jeremy Lin
Carlos Boozer

You've replaced that group with

rookies- Russell, A. Brown, Nance jr, Upshaw

AND

vet signees

Roy Hibbard
Brandon Bass
Lou Williams...

That 7 for 7 switch out ..that's how you rebuild. you bring in youngstrs who can play, and you replace guys who've been in the league and have proven already to be marginal...with guys who have been in the league and proven to be solid contributors...

you still have Swaggy, Kelly and Sacre on your roster..as of now...

AND

2.8 million cap exception left to work with...

Again, much props to Mitch and his staff for this offseason...

In response to Reply # 0

man.. He roughed K.A.T up a bit tonight...glad for the kid...

Black and Upshaw give us nice big man depth..

http://espn.go.com/blog/los-angeles-lakers/post/_/id/41723/lakers-expected-to-sign-robert-upshaw

Undrafted free-agent center Robert Upshaw, an ultra-talented shot-blocker who has also been kicked out of two colleges, has reached an agreement on a two-year deal with the Los Angeles Lakers, a league source confirmed to ESPN late Friday night.

The source said the deal is expected to be completed in the coming days, and while immediate details weren't available, the source said the first year of the deal was partially guaranteed while the second year was non-guaranteed.

Northeast Ohio Media Group first reported that Upshaw had reached an agreement with the Lakers.

The 7-footer is playing with the Lakers' summer league squad and finished with 2 points, 3 blocks and 6 rebounds in nearly 13 minutes during the team's 81-68 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday in Las Vegas.

Upshaw averaged 10.9 points, 8.2 rebounds and 4.5 blocks in 19 games with the University of Washington last season before being dismissed from the program for a violation of team rules. At the time of his dismissal, his 85 blocks led the nation and set a single-season school record.

Upshaw, a Fresno native, transferred to Washington after being dismissed from Fresno State for a violation of team rules.

His off-the-court trouble led the potential first-round pick to go undrafted. But for the Lakers, Upshaw could be a low-risk, high-reward addition to their frontcourt. Upshaw had the longest wingspan at the 2015 NBA Draft Combine, measuring 7-foot-5 ½. He also had the highest standing reach at 9-5.

But I am not ready to elevate it beyond that. The Upshaw thing to me is savvier because they got him for nothing and I think he could be a legitimate rim protector in the NBA. I am really surprised no one took a flyer on him, then again maybe that should tell me something. I really thought Philly was going to draft him with one of our many, many picks. But I am thrilled to have at least two of our guys, Okafor and Hernangomez.

Nance Jr. is a really good defender.... he's a go getter..

and once Upshaw gets in shape..he's gonna be special..

Brown is a solid ball player also...

and Clarkson looks like he's ready to step up..

D'Angelo is figuring things out, but you can tell he's gonna be solid.

Hey...who knows? He may just be drinking because he miserable in Denver....Or it could be a serious issue. Whatever it is, there are four or five teams willing to trade for him according to recent reports (LA, Sacramento, Houston, Detroit to name just a few....)

I think he can be had for nothing at this point....

We've seen what he can do in terms of vision and timing....and the scary part is that's him working within a pretty much foreign offense. Once he gets a feel for the system and develops a chemistry in camp, it's gonna be really fun to see him make plays.
