I had Rangers over Hawks in the beginning but I think now I am changing that to Ducks over Rangers. Anaheim and Tampa would be more exciting though, so personally I would like to see that.

I don't see how the Rangers can hang with a team that can score.

Lundqvist gonna Lundqvist, but currently the Rangers are averaging like 1.88 goals per game in the playoffs or something.

NOT Chicago. I have no interest in seeing the team that keeps sending us home win. Also, fuck Chicago sports teams in general.

I don't have anything inherently against Sun Belt hockey teams like a lot of fans in northern climates seem to. That said, both of these teams have won fairly recently. Of the two, the Lightning are more fun to watch/root for, but it still feels weird actively rooting for Tampa to win it's second Cup in a little less than a decade.

That leaves the Rangers. I guess it would be nice to see hank and Rick Nash get rings, but honestly fuck this team.

I guess as long as it's not the Hawks, I'm fine. I was pulling for the Caps, though.

I don't really have anything against the Ducks or Hawks.

Normally I root against teams that win too much, but I can't not respect the Hawks.

At this point I'm agnostic towards the Lightning compared to how much I hate the Rangers, and specifically, meathead fans at the Garden or who were on Metro North with me last night.

I always assumed it was largely suburban (with some fans in the city.) But the big suburban areas already have teams of their own that actually identify with Long Island and Jersey specifically (and in the case of the Devils, have a franchise that's been more successful in recent decades.)

Are there that many honest to God hockey fans in Manhattan?

In response to Reply # 8

A lot more hockey fans than a lot of cities, especially for a big city where sports aren't #1.

Having them play in Manhattan, near where everyone (who can afford tickets) works in Midtown, and easy public transit means there's a lot of support.

A sad amount of people from Long Island are Rangers fans since the Isles haven't been good for 30 years.

But yeah, surprisingly (to my normal assumptions) NYC is actually pretty big on hockey.

I'm up in the Hudson Valley now and it's all Rangers.

It's not the biggest hockey city on the east-coast (that would be Philly who used to support a minor-league team at the Spectrum before it was torn down, plus have far too people than they deserve who treat the Flyers across the street like the Broad Street Bullies are in town) but it's definitely far bigger, more passionate in terms of a fanbase than Boston, DC or any of the Southeastern cities.

It seems like when the team is good they are like Detroit or Chicago or Philly but if it's anything less than super competitive then you could be in San Jose or even Tampa.

even though they had Bledsoe and Parcells.

At least when you scale in the NFL/NHL dominance.

Plus there was the Bean Pot for collegiate hockey.

On an NHL level, Bruins still were nowhere near Philly or likely the Rangers either.

Bigger than Isles (by that point), Devils (always) or Caps (same).

Spent some time up in Boston also during when Borque was winning the Cup with the Avalanche and certain misguided diehards were acting like he was winning that Cup for Boston which to me felt weird but c'est la vie.

That place is a baseball town through and through, with probably the Bruins having the most loyal niche base out of the rest and well now Brady/Belasterisk with the NFL just swallowing competition everywhere in general.

Like the Pats were worthless and probably should have left town. Their entire history reads like some shit-brained choose your own adventure book until the Cheatriot era. They were like the Bulls of the NFL, defined by one era and a bunch of blah.

Plus there was the Bean Pot for collegiate hockey.

That's the thing, I don't want to conflate overall interest in the sport, which is incredible with the universities and youth programs, with interest in the Bruins.

>On an NHL level, Bruins still were nowhere near Philly or
>likely the Rangers either.

But I don't wanna sell it short either, like there was a time when the Bs were the big thing in Boston. Pats were an afterthought, Sox were kinda up and down (but still king) and the Celtics were winning titles but, unfortunately for them, mostly black. During the Orr era, the Bs were so popular that their minor league games sold out even (for about four years they had the team in town, too, like Philly had with the Phantoms).

I can see why they were pulling for him though, he had been part of that truncated period of success there and was such a great player. Plus at that point they were desperate for something to latch onto, I mean the Sox were riding a 250-year drought, the Pats were vaguely recognizable as an NFL franchise and the Celtics glory had faded faster than Jorn's denim.

It's crazy how they treat each one of the 162 games like it's a big deal.

Regular and post-season, probably.

Amazing what happens when you get a defense and an amazing goalie.

Now if only there was secondary scoring.

I am a bitter sports fan. I dont watch playoff games unless my team is involved. I dont watch championships either. Why would i want to watch other teams play when I dont like them? Or why would I want to watch other fans cheering and watching their teams move on? Since the Blackhawks have recently won a few cups I am okay with them winning again. I dont want any other teams fans or players to get to feel that joy that we have felt the last few seasons. I dont want them to feel that joy for the first time or for the first time in a long time. Be miserable while the Blackhawks and Kings swap the cup for a while.

I am a fan of a sport first and foremost and want to see it played at its highest level. Like for years the Sixers have not been in the playoffs, before that it was the Phillies who sucked, before that the Eagles. I didn't care, I had a separate interest in seeing the best teams on the biggest stage.

Apart from the early part of San Fran's win in 2010, I didn't even check out after a disappointing loss. For example I watched the Lightning-Flames series (rooting for the Flames, obviously!) intently. The only time I will be on some "ah, fuck this" is if the series is obviously boring due to style of play and/or a mismatch. Like I gave ZERO fucks about the Nets-Spurs NBA Finals, for example.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

was a horrible loser. Lost little league games and was bummed out for the rest of the day. My parents always thought I was crazy because of it. I am a very cool and calm person but once I got on the field I was really intense. When watching sports I dont get overly emotional. I dont yell about horrible plays or calls. But once my team is out fuck every other team and fan. Im taking my ball and going home.

Great game, of course I missed the winning goal after hanging on every play trying to explain to some wanker next to me that this was not, in fact, the longest game the Ducks ever played.

It was, strangely, the longest game the Hawks ever played in their 635 years of existence.

It could have ended at so many different points. Shaw and Vermette had great chances for Chicago. Vatanen and Perry each had more than one great opportunity.

I knew it was going to OT at the beginning of the third period. I wrote it on Twitter and people started piling on the hate (anyone who had to travel to Chicago was treading a game like this). I also figured about halfway into the first OT that it was going to be a *long* game. My theory is that if a team doesn't score in the first 5-7 minutes, the pace will settle and then the game will drag on. As the skaters get more tired and more tentative, the goalies can read the play better because it develops more slowly. The only thing that can end it is a mistake (bad turnover, bad penalty, etc). Otherwise you better settle in.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Somehow I just couldn't see him going to St Louis and I always thought they would keep Hitch. San Jose and Philly made pretty halfassed efforts to get him. I wonder why he didnt think more of San Jose. In the end no one was going to stuff his pockets like Toronto or offer a higher profile job. I wonder what he thinks of their existing roster, especially teh big names like Kessel.

How can he get caught reaching on a shot from that distance? He should be swallowing that into the crest of your sweater.

Lightning played the better game overall but I give the Rangers credit for striking back. I thought this series might look like this coming in but the first two games had me thinking that was a fantasy.

I really like Palat and Kucherov, such solid, 200-foot players. Cooper did a helluva job with these guys in the A.

My favorite goal was the Killorn goal, ballsy play because a lot of players would have tried anything to get the puck across to Stamkos or, failing that (both D played the pass), they would have tried to get anything they could on net. He cut to the middle and knocked both defenders together like Mo would Larry and Curly and then beat Lundqvist with a very nice shot.

I think the Rangers match up OK as far as their top 4 versus Tampa's top 6 but they need some guys to pick it up a little. Staal has to be more of a force in his own end. I also think the forwards on Tampa are better checkers than the forwards on the Rangers. One of the only guys playing tight and using his body is Nash, but you can't say he is playing a "complete" game because he can't score for shit right now. Stepan has been really good. Some of these other guys look a little soft.

They can come out with a number of different configurations that give them four good lines and three good pairings. I think that helped them yesterday, let's face it, they could have won that Game and they won Game 1 bigger than the score showed.

They were better for 30+ minutes in Game 4 and really put on a clinic defensively tonight. The Rangers dictated some things tonight though. I could see them sending it to 7 for sure and if they can do that it will be tough to bet against Hank.

I dunno, this game seemed kinda, uh, for lack of a better word boring to me at times. Not the same UMPH as the Western series has had and even some of the earlier games in this series.

If I were the Lightning, I would really try to hammer down Game 6, take zero chances tilting it back. Come out hard off the hop, really try to push the pace and get the Rangers in penalty trouble.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I am extremely nervous for the Ducks. Such a great opportunity to bury the Hawks in the last game. The Hawks have been in this situation, tied 2-2, seven times during the Toews/Kane era. They won Games 5 and 6 all seven times, 14-0 in Games 5 and 6.

But then again they have also blown leads and lost series. I still have confidence in the Ducks but it just smarts to have two up-for-grabs games that went Chicago's way.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The Backhawks are such a weird team.

That third period was the sixth time in these playoffs the #Blackhawks have allowed at least three goals in a period, 14 games.

The #Blackhawks are 16-0 in games after a series is tied 2-2 under Joel Quenneville — 8-0 on the road; 8-0 at home.

It *almost* mattered though. Toews with a helluva goal on that third one, the last one was cheesy but a shot on net is never a bad play. I thought it might come off the side and get jammed in. I still don't know how it went through.

But the Rangers got bounces and then blew them away in the third, starting with an early goal. Tampa beat the Rangers at their own game in Game 5.

This series is so random that it's almost become predictable. Second period started and I thought, if the Hawks get a quick one here, they are coming bang. I barely finished the sentence and Teravainen gets that shitty little goal (though he made a great pass on Seabrook's goal). It seemed like they weathered the storm but then once Cro came out I just had this feeling. Bang, great goal by Toews and then another garbage goal. Worst game I have seen from Andersen in a while and maybe ever.

Then when OT started I said Anaheim is going to come out HOARD here, no double and triple OT shit tonight. I figured they would either score or get a counterattack the other way to end it in Chicago's favor. Sure enough, bad change, nice pass, shot to the net, go to the net and stop, bang, basic play in a favorable situation sends them to Chicago up 3-2.

I think Sharp made the main mistake on Maroon's big goal and Hjalmarsson wound up out of position. Lots of people want to put that in Timonen. He is struggling mightily out there though, there is no denying that. It's pretty sad, really. I mean he fought so hard to come back and have this opportunity. Nobody is there to take it from him (they benched Rundblad, Johns is injured and I guess Pokka would be their emergency guy). He is *really* fighting it out there, getting pushed around and struggling to keep up. Cumiskey has been adequate but both he and Timonen are forcing the Hawks to do uncomfortable things. If any of their top four take a penalty, they kill it using just three defensemen. Every team uses four and in some instances more. They have to manage minutes, OK whatever, but also manage line changes. They have been getting caught with too many men and bad changes have led to goals.

It's crazy how a lot of times the difference is not the absence of some big, game-breaking player, but the absence of an experienced player who can fill a role and be dependable. That almost did the Flyers in in 2004, they were way short on defensemen and came up with Sami Kapanen, a forward, to fill in admirably on D. No way do they get within one goal of the finals without his play, particularly his stint on defense. The Hawks need someone now, hell they could use two guys. Rozsival was the butt of fans and probably writers jokes all year, and now they would kill to heal his ankle overnight.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

let him take some risks and get his skating work in his favor in his own end. he was kind of like a cheesier version of vatanen on offense, didn't really time things as well or have a knack for the simple play to offset the complicated one. he also didnt like the physical side of the game too much. but man did he have wheels and he could handle the puck like a forward.

like i said right at the start of the year, those two deals would hurt their teams (more so boston than chicago though) and really solidify the isles. they did better than i expected, but i thought those deals made them a playoff team.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

You had Julien firing shots in the press about the absence of both Boychuk and Iginla. Lot of tension and the Bs ended up having to choose between their coach and their GM. There was no way both could have stayed.

I think Chiarelli and Todd McClellan find themselves in, and feels weird to type, a great situation in Edmonton. If they can do much of anything well, not everything, just one or two things, they should have a very good team soon there. The total turnover makes me hopeful that they can ameloriate things in short order there.

Play every other day, regardless of travel, until Game 7 and then there is a travel day plus a prep day. Every series in every sport should be like that. The way the NBA will do shit for TV like give two series three days off between games is ridiculous.

I'm with you on the length of the series though. This should be a best-of-21

At the same time. They didn't manage the puck well, particularly in the neutral zone but in general, really. Lot of bad turnovers that went the other way. But then the plays they were trying to make were often not that ambitious. I dunno, seemed like their brains were kind of mushy early and then things just snowballed on them in a hurry.

they were kicking ass in that third period but obviously when you're pressing for a goal you're vulnerable to a counterattack. nice hustle from desjardins and shaw, great finish by shaw. it's always hard to lift the puck in tight on your backhand, and much tougher when big ass ryan getzlaf is tying up your stick.

duncan keith kinda stole that game, great passes on their first three goals.

shit most of the game, combined 12 minutes and change of ice time for cumiskey and rundblad. he's just everywhere, i can't think of too many guys who can cover that much ground and that effectively, i guess only one really, doughty, although guys like subban and karlsson are close.

credit to their other D for carrying a big load, hjalmarsson in particular. he has double shifted on penalty kills at times and been really strong defensively.

the two sports are so different

nba is so dependent on having a super star (plus depth), hockey is a game of inches where the difference in your third line (plus a dominant first line) might be the edge.

although i think basketball would be more of a team game if the economics of the NBA didn't shape it into something that was all about the stars. more tempered expansion and a hard cap would have made it a league that was more about teams than stars IMHO. but i do credit the NBA for creating, manipulating and furthering a profitable marketing scheme. the nhl's ten best could walk down the street in pack along a crowded street in most cities and not be recognized.

YES. Tampa played a way better game and a noticeably better series. I was so nervous they were not going to get the result they deserved until Palat scored.

Lightning outplayed the Rangers in every facet tonight...I thought for sure a goal was coming in that final 7 or 8 mins when TB was just dominating. Thought the intermission might allow NY to stem the tide but obviously it didn't. Relatively weak goal on the first but the first was a beauty, setup by Johnson's overlap and Pavlat hustling to fill that back-side lane...great pass, excellent finish up high. Game set, series.

Soft first goal will be shown over and over but he played well enough to win, he was just about the only Ranger who did. Their D fought to hang in there, too. No one up front was really pushing it tonight. The NHL is such a crazy league, here is a team that was one game from the finals and had the best record of any team during the year, they will definitely shake some things up up front. You had the Blues finish way over 100 points and they almost fired their coach anyway. Just such a results-based business and the nature of free agency, trades, etc makes it easy to do anything from tinker to tear down. This summer is thin on free agents. I wonder what St Louis will do. Play somewhere good for cheap, cash out with a bad team or retire.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

(c) Gil Scott Heron

This reminded me a lot of the Detroit series in 2013 when the Ducks made the Wings chase them all along and then in Games 6 and 7 their stars just shriveled. Perry had a bad stat line in Game 6 but quite frankly I thought he played well. He was getting to spots and mixing it up, they just either weren't getting him the puck or Chicago had the answer. He was OK tonight, too. Getzlaf I thought was weak though. He loses a board battle and simultaneously Clayton Stoner makes a dumb play, that cost them the back-breaking Saad goal. I think they could have regrouped from Toews' early ones but that third goal really fucked them. They had to just throw everything at the net at that point, and all the pressing and pinching was too much to sustain.

Hossa has not had a great playoff offensive but he can still check and he is still a VET. Scored a goal with his foot (legit but bent the rules) and then he punked Fowler (stripped him, drew a penalty on him, they score). I love Fowler's game and potential but he needs to take that next step. Play with more confidence, make quicker decisions, shoot the puck a little more and get stronger, battle more. He seems resigned to a finesse game but he has the size to take it up a level when he needs to, but he doesn't.

I don't know I could say 1000 things about the series but in the end I think the team that knew how to play in these games won. Hats off to the 'Hawks. I feel for Boudreau, going through now his sixth Game 7 loss at home, and hope he and the guys can get it together for next season. At the rate they are going--Game 7 loss in round 1 2013, round 2 2014, round 3 2015--they are due to lose Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final next year

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

But I do think the Lightning have some advantages in this matchup and also vis-a-vis the potential matchup they had with Anaheim.

I would have had some concern about the overall size advantage, and particularly down the middle, for Anaheim but less so for Chicago. Also, as well as they performed in the series against Anaheim, using four defensemen is a very risky proposition. All four of those guys had some vulnerable moments in the last round and they will have them again. One guy takes a puck in the wrong spot or spills awkwardly into the boards, then what? They can't just add a fourth guy and ask him to play 25+ minutes, they would have to use all three guys (Rundblad, Timonen, Cumiskey) a bit more and play more conventionally. They would likely have to kill every penalty with three guys, double shifting Keith or Hjalmarsson (assuming both were available), not just the ones where one of their core four took the penalty. Managing minutes at even strength would become very challenging.

Meanwhile the Lightning defense keeps getting better and better. Carle seems to be in form now, Coburn is playing his best hockey, Sustr has gained confidence, Nesterov is coming along, Stralman has brought it up a level and of course Hedman is a certified beast now. So I see that as a potential advantage.

The thing that is exciting to me is that the Hawks can play both ways, they can play a skating game or they can play a checking game. Tampa has proven the same over the course of these playoffs, particularly the last round. So it's not a question of who can dictate tempo or the first goal wins or anything like that. I think it's going to be a very exciting series. That said, Chicago's ability to come up with the big play or the big game is very much proven, Tampa's we've just seen flashes of.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

but i am always skeptical of these guys who break out at an advanced age, usually they are just hot and then their subsequent contract sucks. i trust yzerman though, and i also find that forwards who get paid in their late 20s are more flop prone than defensemen. leino, bickell, soon beleskey, i wouldnt touch those guys with a 50-foot pole. foligno is different, he always kinda showed flashes and now will probably settle into a happy medium of about about 55 points a year.

from there on out it's a score effect, unless you manage something magical, which they didn't.

They might have had a chance but the penalty drawn by Hossa pretty much ended it.

Like most teams that lose to the Kings/Hawks, the Ducks shouldn't panic. Those teams are the best of the best, so beating them is extremely hard.

there's like eight bodies around the net, he sits there and holds the fucking thing. hossa was all over him. they had the momentum at that point and could have made it a game there.

similarly pat maroon was on some "B-LOWS THE LAY-UP!" (c) Chick Hearn shit in the first period. he knew it, he was upset with himself. two great chances and one good one. they could have stolen a tie period, but then again chicago could have been beating them worse, too.

i dont think they will make any big moves, in fact they kind of cant. at least not over the summer, but i could see them going ham on rentals at the deadline if they need to. they are a deep organization and some guys will have to go so that vatanen, lindholm and their goalies can get new contracts after next year.

the only guy i see leaving is beleskey, he is gonna get a fat paycheck and disappoint someone. good guy, hard-working player, but he is $2M guy, not a $5M guy. someone is going overpay him

I was surprised they didn't score on that first one but they were also a little reluctant to shoot (except Stralman, I guess).

Their PP has been hot and cold like any other, in the first game against Detroit they were 0/7 and they had a couple other similar performances. They can also get hot and be like 50% for stretches though.

The thing that is interesting to me about the Bolts is that outside of Stamkos their big scorers are all cheap (Johnson, Kucherov, Palat, Killorn) so they were able to spend and maybe overspend on role players. They have like five somewhat expensive D, plus guys like Filppula and Callahan making good money even if they are not big point producers. It has worked out well although obviously as their bigger guns come up for contracts, they will have to kiss off some of the pricier supporting players.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Similarly I don't see why the NBA didn't go Friday/Sunday. Weird.

I think Tampa has outplayed them over the course of 120 minutes and overall they are the better team. But Chicago can hit them with flurries and hang around. If they can stretch the series to seven, it's theirs, I trust them with everything on the line.

I wonder if it will come down to which not-all-world goalie cracks first.

Crawford's Sv% is like .920 in the playoffs. That's pretty average.

Vasilevskiy has plenty of talent but obviously is unproven on this stage

I have never been a big Crawford fan, to me he is just an adequate goalie. He is broad as a barn and has some power, but he's not overly athletic and he doesn't really play the "blocking" style that reliably. Take that Johnson goal in Game 2, Crawford should make himself an extension of the post there, leave zero room.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I have to admit that while I loved him as a prospect, I thought he might be getting rushed early in his career. I remember going to a game his rookie year and despite being huge, he was being tossed around. Five-foot-ten-inch Mike Richards beat his ass in a fight during the game also.

But now he is a lot stronger and he has always been an exceptional skater. That pass tonight was magnificent. He is going to be a good one, like Doughty, Keith, Weber, the real complete guys.

already down a guy, coaches have this absurd standard for going 5on3. one coach told me after a fairly obvious but somewhat marginal slashing call against one of his top PK guys that "once you're already down a guy, to call a slash, we'd better have chopped a leg off."

that's the only thing i can think of because saad definitely extended his arm. even if a buy the (false) argument that he couldn't have avoided contact, that part was obvious and deserved a penalty. i though the officials did a lousy job of protecting bishop last night, whom the blackhawks clearly wanted to bang up and test physically.

i'd consider retaliating a bit if i were the lightning but it's a dangerous game to enter into plus right now crawford is already shook. let him stew in the stink of some of these goals he has given up.

you know who has kind of sucked in this series? sharp. usually he is a money guy in the playoffs but he has not only been quiet, he's hurt his team. he and cumiskey were both lost on the paquette goal.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

I wondered how aggressive Bishop would be handling the puck because earlier in the series he basically didn't leave his net. He is skating all over the place though, they have tested him and he's responded. Except for the time his defenseman fanned on a clearing attempt and they ran smack into each other to give the 'Hawks a goal. Sigh.

Such a real ass dude, a funny guy, a great player and a warrior. You can go to any city where this guy played from Helsinki to Milwaukee to Nashville to Philly to Chicago and people have stories about him. Just a class dude who was always very personable. He had to fight so hard to have this opportunity and things didn't exactly go smoothly for him. What an awesome moment.

I think they are in a very good position.

Kruger, Saad, Desjardins I think will all get new contracts and then they sign two new defensemen.

They would dump Bickell if they could but I think his contract is onerous. Cap hit of $4M per, actual salary that's higher and not a lot of production.

Sharp is the guy who might have the right combination of age, salary and role to get moved, make a deal for a DMan and another asset plus make things more comfortable with the cap since Seabrook will need a new contract after next year.

I wouldn't rule out contending next year but it might be a transition year plus they just played a lot of games. I think the West is wide open next year. There seems to be an unusual amount of media hype around the Kings and all of it is positive. I don't agree with that. I think they have tough decisions to make and will also be in transition next year. I think a new team will emerge next year, maybe the Preds. Anaheim will have the same team, the logical next step would be losing at home in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Final.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

i just meant that it feels more like 2010 (losing byfuglien, campbell, ladd, versteeg, brouwer, etc) than 2013, when they pretty much ran it back outside of a few 3rd / 4th liners like frolik and bolland.

i know that with the cap situation being what it is and having to resign some key guys like saad and kruger, as well as shore up the defense, that everyone won't be back.

But I think they pretty much qualify now. While I wouldn't put them on even footing with the very greatest dynasties (Habs, Isles, Oilers), this is pretty fucking legit. Winning two in a row is very difficult between the salary cap and the length of the season/playoffs now. They also came sorta close to threepeating. They won in 2013, they lost in overtime of Game 7 of the Conference Finals last year and now they win again. Pretty impressive.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The face is not some caricature like the Indians and old-school Warriors logos. The variegated feathers are probably the most beautiful element of any logo in sports. To me, he looks proud and noble. The only more sensitive logo is the North Dakota Fighting Sioux, which was developed with help from the Sioux living in the area.

Now I understand the position that no team should have an American-Indian mascot, but singling out the 'Hawks or lumping them in with the 'Skins, Indians, Braves, et al doesn't make sense to me.

Because their Philly era logos were the most racist sports logos I've ever seen. But they didn't have to change their name, they just phased out *that* part of it, and no nobody objects to their name at all.

I don't think Dan Snyder's team could do that and make it work, but most teams probably could. I still don't understand why Marquette didn't try that ten years ago; they could've kept the name that their fanbase wanted without pissing people off.

The Braves, Redskins, Blackhawks, etc would have to change their name at slightly like St John's did.

I dunno to me the Blackhawks one is inoffensive, that and UND can both stay, the rest of the stuff should go. Maybe the Indians don't have to change it outright but that smiling Indian is just ridiculous.

Blackhawks logo/name isn't remotely as offensive as Washington or Atlanta.

At the same time: races/disempowered groups should not be mascots, and even if it's Florida State who has an "agreement" with the Seminoles, it hurts an entire race people.

they're all garbage and racist. some are more racist than others.

especially not disempowered ones.

it hurts entire communities/groups/identities so it's not really up to one group.

There's an entire world of ideas out there. Just pick something else. The argument that there isn't an alternative falls flat. The argument that the name itself is somehow fundamentally central to a fan's enjoyment or loyalty is empty.

There isn't much debate here.

Is it as bad as Washington? hell no.

Should oppressed races/groups/etc be used as mascots? hell no.

again, the blackhawks are named after an individual.

it's not a blanket term for a group, or a flat-out slur. there is no black hawk tribe. black hawk is a person's name. the logo isn't a generic indian, it's an actual depiction of that particular person, done in a respectful manner. it's not a caricature.

that's a different thing than the indians or redskins or the seminoles. if there was an mlb team called the cleveland caucasians, an nfl team called the washington rednecks, and then an nhl team called the chicago general pattons, i wouldn't necessarily lump the third one in the same "racially insensitive" bucket as the first two.

naming a team after an actual person, in an honorific way, with a logo actually depicting that person, isn't inherently inappropriate solely because that person happens to be native american. that line of thought is actually pretty patronizing.

so you're ok with the Washington logo, but not the name? It's not a caricature.

I see your point and maybe some people would like to make a distinction that it's named after a person, not the team.

But their imagery is Native American stereotypes. I mean: tomahawks. Arrowheads.

Is their name less racist? sure why not.

Does "more" or "less" racist really matter? Many people, most importantly Native American groups, say no.

insensitive in the same way as a team named the caucasians or the crackers?

i don't know, smuts. i just think it's a very different thing.

as good stand up comedians like to say: punch up, not down.

Caricatures were central to the oppression, marginalization (and worse) of groups like the Native Americans.

Something like a mascot goes directly to that.

Teddy Roosevelt? One of the most powerful, privileged men in US history? Whatever. We should probably avoid having people/groups be mascots, but if it's that important to you, go ahead, name your team after rich white men I guess.

But when you have native american groups, who were almost genocided out of existence, petitioning governments large and small to end this practice, and it's something as completely inconsequential as the little picture on your hat and the colors on your shirt?

there's no argument.

I'm a Hawks fan but will not wear any gear because of the "Indian Head". Even though the name/mascot is named after one particular person, the logo is symbolizes an entire group of people. The logo is a clear representation of a Native American, and while a beautiful looking logo, it's commonly referred to as the Indian Head and we have the slogan "commit to the Indian". It's not "commitment to the Blackhawk". The individual that inspired this logo is not alive to say this is ok and because the logo is symbolic of an oppressed people being mascots it falls into the same space as the R*dskins, Indians, etc. It's not as egregious, but it's still the same. People should not be mascots. Period. Particularly oppressed ones.

If Irish Catholics don't want to be represented by the Fighting Irish, then I'm all for a name change too. However, I know the history of ND and it's fan base and this is a different situation complete.y

I thought Tampa out-played chicago for long stretches this series but it usually didn't show on the scoreboard. Tampa really regrets choking away that Game 1.

Crazy that the only 2 goal lead in the entire series happened with 5 minutes left in the series clincher (what a sick fucking no look pass from Brad Richards).

Chicago was talented, unfazed, and Corey Crawford stopped dicking it up. And they managed to get by only using four defensemen. Crazy, and a sign of just how super-human Duncan Keith is.

Was glad Timmonen started to get some tick and got to win a cup. Still pretty shocked at how badly his tenure was in Chicago.

If Stamkos was able to break through this series it might have tilted this for Tampa. That point blank stop by Crawford was pretty symbolic. But hey, maybe he'll get to play with someone better than Valteri Filppula next year.

I like him, but he has no business on a top line.

Yeah it was a series for an opportunistic team and the Hawks were way better at seizing the moment. I also think on the telecasts and in a lot of other outlets the Hawks were puzzlingly downplayed (usually they favor the older-line teams, especially Comcast ones). They had a couple stretches of games where they carried the play big time and didn't get recognized. Both teams could skate and kind of took their turns getting space.

>Crazy that the only 2 goal lead in the entire series happened
>with 5 minutes left in the series clincher (what a sick

Very tight series. Stamkos being totally snakebit and Johnson having a broken wrist definitely hurt. Stamkos seemed to press more and more and come up with less and less. Seabrook getting his stick on that puck was a turning point in the series. Johnson was really limited, I had heard he had a broken finger but it turned out to be his wrist. He was just making the simple play and hardly shot the puck at all.

>Chicago was talented, unfazed, and Corey Crawford stopped

Yeah I gotta give Crawford credit, once it became a three-game series, he got dialed in. He was making some really tough saves in Game 5, and then obviously he came up with a shutout.

>Was glad Timmonen started to get some tick and got to win a
>cup. Still pretty shocked at how badly his tenure was in

I wasn't surprised because the Flyers were like "ehhhhhhh" as soon as he started pushing to come back. They didn't even play it up like they were impressed to drive up his trade value. He's 40 and spent a good stretch away from the ice getting a lot of medical treatment. He was pretty brutal but he didn't kill them (well maybe in a game or two) and he got into decent enough shape to finish the thing off.

>If Stamkos was able to break through this series it might have

I imagine Stakmos will move back to center. He played most of the year with Callahan and Killorn, they moved him to the wing during the Detroit series, I guess. For sure against Montreal he was playing wing but I don't think it's permanent.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

> Seabrook getting his stick on that puck was a turning point in the series.

one of the most crucial moments in the series, if not the most crucial.

that, and Stamkos not being able to lift the puck on the breakaway yesterday.

Stamkos' shot off the bar early was fire, but he never got the luck to go his way in game 6.

Johnson breaking his wrist this series is huuuuge. And it helps explain why that line wasn't nearly as effective.

Can't believe Bishop was playing on a torn groin. He was limited, but still played very well.

The Sauk nation was significant in the region and the original owner was in a battalion named the Black Hawk in World War I. I'm not entirely averse to the idea of mascots that aren't just a safe, streamlined thing. We have enough Wildcats and Tigers and Cardinals IMO. I don't mind the Tree, the Fightin' Irish, etc, even if some of them are a little iffy. But the mockery and cartoonish stuff should definitely go.
