"Now that everyone is saying Monty Williams is a horrible coach..."

I just want it noted that I was waiving that flag like a dread at a Jr. Gong concert 3 years ago.

There were few Okps, Shawn maybe? Some other analytic dudes? I don't remember who claimed he was good. But now that articles have been written. Bill Simmons is repeating. It's full steam ahead.

And no, it's not excuse for them not making the playoffs. J'Rue's injury is probably the biggest factor. But Coach Def Comedy Jam suit has not helped.

Which is to say I'm ready for a change, but he gets way too much criticism from the peanut gallery sometimey watchers like Simmons and his ilk.

He's not a "good" coach, but he does some things very well. But the injuries really are the story for us this year, although with a healthy Durant we are still right where we are anyway. Not sure what coach would have us ahead of the other 7 playoff teams.

Our chirping birds on the forums want Calipari. But I can only imagine the power he'd want to make the NBA move at this point, and I absolutely hate the idea of the GM/Coach combo.

Their team has been playing with a second unit starting and D Leaguers backing up. It's not just Holiday who's hurt, shit the other day I worked one of their road games and they were without Holiday, Evans and Anderson. AD had just come back from two games out and wasnt quite 100% (still played well). Sorry man but Quincy Pondexter is not carrying you to a playoff spot in the West. I thought all things considered Williams managed the game very well and his team hung in there against a good opponent that was playing pretty well.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Ownership gave GM Dell Demps and Monty Williams preseason mandate to make playoffs to keep jobs, w/ no allowance for injuries. They made it.

Like, watching the Spurs and Pelicans playing offense together was like watching a spaceship versus a dude walking. Monty deserves credit for brow's development, I suppose, but he is a lousy coach of offense and defense. Those two things are important.

I think I read that the Pels are either the most or near the top for most plays run out of isolation. It's probably due to injuries and Tyreke having to do so much on his own, but numbers don't lie...the team is not built for isolation other than Ty clearouts.

Maybe good. Hasn't gotten a fair shake in either of his last two jobs, as we've discussed.

But back to the subject at hand. Mike Brown is a stellar defensive coach. Monte Monty Monti is neither a good offense nor defense coach. This team would be 5 wins better w Mike Brown.

You can't divide and conquer your own error on this one.

You used Mike Brown as an example of a bad offensive
coach who coached a good offense.

And you compared him to Monty Williams.

That's awful and sad and pathetic.

The Pels had a top 10 offense this year (8th). Offense is NOT Monty's problem. He runs creative sets and has made the most out of a funky backcourt situation.

>Like, watching the Spurs and Pelicans playing offense together was like watching a spaceship versus a dude walking.

Judas priest, parrots gonna parrot. The Pels had an equally good offense last night you weirdo. Scoring 108 on 52% shooting against the defending champs is an example of running a bad offense?

I see why OE goes at you guys so hard. Such windbaggery.

Cleveland had one of the best statistical offenses in the league when Bron was there. So is mike brown a completely unrecognized offensive genius? There is absolutely no off ball movement to speak of. A bunch of dudes stand around until ten seconds are left on the shot clock, then somebody goes one on one.

This real life basketball shit is beyond your depth.

Nothing you said has any bearing in reality. Holler at your boy Zach Lowe, who consistently praises Monty's offensive sets.

OE is really onto something with this, never realized it until now. Sheesh.

I havent watched them a ton this year but here and there. I don't think their offense is perplexing and if your ball movement isnt as crisp as San Antonio's, whooptydamndo, you and 28 other teams.

I watched them intently from up close working their game here against the Clippers and I was impressed. In the first half they were awesome on offense, you could say they were hot but they were getting great looks for Q and Gordon. This was a game sans Evans, Asik, Anderson and Jrue. Brow had missed a couple games with a sprained ankle. They wound up losing when the Clips rolled in the tanks (starters came back at the end) but it was skin tight up to that point.

I thought he handled the Clippers' bigs well on a night where his team was short on size, he used a thin bench effectively and he made good adjustments to be able to have a balanced offense when he had excuses to have neither an inside game or an outside game.

Now I am not saying Monty Williams is an elite coach or anything, but let's not lose sight of the fact that he is well-respected, he has had some success and that the original post was made as a preemptive defense of Brow missing them 'offs on some Kentucky stumping bullshit.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

players. I think Monty was not too impressive when the team was transitioning from d-leaguers to having talent, but things have gotten better and the team is performing better in situations that were shaky before. For example, for last year and earlier this year, the team was horrible coming off of halftime...getting dominated by everyone in the 3rd quarter consistently. Not so much anymore.

i think he takes a less than obvious approach to offense and has success, that's commendable. d is a work in progress but without consistently having the same personnel and some of your top perimeter guys being out, it's hard to make that a well-oiled machine. honestly i was baffled by this post until i followed the money, back to cal and worldwide wes's pockets.

The one with a young Kyrie and Dion Waiters.

He won 60 Plus TWICE with Lebron and bags of dicks

He coached the Lakers the last time they won a playoff
series.

And people OPENLY discredited him in that Kerr post

Charlie said "he get's credit for the defensive side of
the ball"

Bwahahahahahahahahahaha

I'm asking for CONSISTENCY

and how does Charlie's comment or anything related to Mike Brown have anything to do w/ Kerr's competency as a coach?

>Bean fault?

The Lakers fans on this board were waaaay more critical
of Mike Brown than Pringles, and Pringles was awful

>and how does Charlie's comment or anything related to Mike
>Brown have anything to do w/ Kerr's competency as a coach?

Because he qualified Brown's success with the Cavs, saying
"he gets credit for the defensive side of the ball"

That's the dominant narrative: that their succss was NOT Brown,
but Lebron.

You ever see Popovich's record pre-Duncan?

Look it up.

It's okay for SOME coaches to succeed with a superstar,
but when OTHERS do, then it's all the player.

It's a double standard and I'm not letting up until the
world is free of racist double standards.

Sorry.

Why should Kerr, or anyone else, get entire credit for their
team's success? And especially a team like Golden State, whose
best players consistently praise their former coach?

What is the reason why we should discuss Kerr's success one
way, and Mike Brown's another way?

Pop coached like 3/4 of a season where they were already boned from a bad start, had no Robinson (played six games) and no Elliott (played less than half the year) and basically no players other than the corpse of Dominique Wilkins.

The Lakers qualified for the playoffs with D'Antoni, losing to Pop. So that manages to weaken your argument in a couple ways. The Pop-Duncan thing is just an impossible statement, as every full season he has coached the team, Duncan has been there. Someone out there probably thought Auerbach couldn't win without Russell either, yet he managed to be the GM of five more title teams in two different decades with entirely different centerpieces and rosters.

i do believe, as wonderl33t said, that coaches are human
and can learn, adapt and improve just like players do. and
monty's definitely done that. but he's still got some issues.

still does some weird rotational stuff. take the memphis game
last week. NO down 3 after the 1st, he starts the 2q with
5 reserves. like, wtf dude. at this time of year, with your
team in a situation where every game's a must-get, you just
cannot do shit like that. playoff rotation, 8½ guys, 2 or 3
starters on the floor @ all times. basic, 101 type shit.

memphis of course, promptly and predictably, does on an 11-2 run
and the game was never close afterward. but it was lost right
there in that stretch.

so it's little shit like that. the defense isn't where it
should be but they've improved relative to league avg the
last few seasons. offense is fine, and would be even finer
if they could keep their starting PG healthy.

he's getting there. i root for him.
