"Rick Carlise: "Hate to admit it, but I'm dumber than Rajon Rondo" "

Damn he fought with Jason Kidd the same way?!?! He gave
up playcalling, and the Mavs won that 'chip

Bwahahaha dude has to learn his own intellectual shortcomings
and let people smarter than him do their job

http://espn.go.com/dallas/nba/story/_/id/12480769/dallas-mavericks-coach-rick-carlisle-praises-point-guard-rajon-rondo-play-calling-improvement

DALLAS -- Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle made a point to praise point guard Rajon Rondo's play calling Friday night after Dallas' 129-99 rout of the Los Angeles Clippers.

That's particularly notable because a power struggle for play-calling responsibilities was the root of heated, profane disputes between the coach and point guard during and after a Feb. 24 win over the Toronto Raptors, leading to Rondo's one-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the team.

EnlargeRajon Rondo, Tyson Chandler, Chandler Parsons
Matthew Emmons/USA TODAY Sports"The trust is becoming more and more better between Coach and I," Rajon Rondo said, noting how relations between he and coach Rick Carlisle have improved recently.

Carlisle said Rondo, a four-time All-Star acquired in a Dec. 18 blockbuster deal with the Boston Celtics, now handles "as much as he can" of the play-calling duties.

"He's really developed a good sense for our team -- when to just push it, when to get into something," Carlisle said. "He really understands the guys that he's playing with."

Rondo had been attempting behind the scenes to get more leeway to call plays before his blowup with Carlisle, which occurred after the point guard ignored a play call from the bench, prompting the coach to call a timeout and shout across the floor at Rondo. They both later attributed the disagreement to poor communication.

Rondo said he has been gradually given more responsibility to call plays since returning from his suspension and felt especially comfortable in the role Friday night, when he guided the Mavs to their highest-scoring outing of his stint with the team.

"The trust is becoming more and more better between Coach and I," Rondo said. "It's tough to give a guy the keys to the car when he first gets there.

"Tonight, we were on the same page a lot. We talked before the game, as far as the play calling that we wanted to stick with. We were very locked in this morning during the shootaround, and it carried over into the game."

Carlisle had a similar power struggle, minus the public fireworks, with point guard Jason Kidd during their first season working together in Dallas. Carlisle relinquished most of the play-calling responsibilities to Kidd midway through the 2008-09 season, and they won a title together two seasons later.

Rondo's numbers in the win over the Clippers -- four points on 2-of-5 shooting and seven assists in 22 minutes -- weren't remarkable, but it was an offensive masterpiece for the Mavs, who were 5-6 after the All-Star break entering the night and hadn't scored 100 points in any of the losses.

Dallas shot 60.7 percent from the floor and 57.1 percent from 3-point range as seven players scored in double figures, led by small forward Chandler Parsons with 22 points and reserve forward Charlie Villanueva with 19.

"I think this is the best I've been since I've been here as far as the play calling," said Rondo, who believes one of the biggest adjustments the Mavs have had to make since his arrival is teammates getting used to expecting the ball at all times, even if it requires an unorthodox pass from him. "Charlie got hot. CP got hot. I knew the right plays to call to get guys shots and not necessarily the same play call every time down the floor, because teams obviously load up on the same plays that you run. I was able to give different play-calling signals and give those guys those looks."

Added Carlisle: "The ball moved tonight. I give a lot of credit to Rondo tonight. He just kept finding the right people. His play calls were on point."

Isnt a player's job to STFU and listen to his coach?

Particularly when the coach has been there for 5 years and won a chip there, and the player has been there for less than 3 months?

I actually really like Rondo but lets not pretend he's Magic or Zeke. Dude was the 4th best player on his title team.

offensive play-calling but their defensive scheme against Lebron...which Carlisle designed....

And Carlisle was more responsible for the Mavs winning their first title than Rondo was w/that 2008 championship Celtic team

And as someone pointed out in this thread, their issue w/one another wasn't so much abt Carlisle not allowing Rondo to call his own plays, but because he *ignored* him during the game when he gave Rondo the play to run and then when he was brought out the game for it he cursed Carlisle out while walking to the bench and even after their exchange Carlisle was willing to let that "in-the-heat-of-the-moment" incident blow over...until Rondo cursed him out again in the locker room which led to him being suspended.

>and Dirk played out of his mind.

He was deserving of the finals MVP - but you're exaggerating a bit

Dirk only had *1* 30point game in the entire 6 gm series...and that came in a loss.

That series was more abt what Lebron DIDN'T do than what Dirk DID...which the credit for that has to go to Rick Carlisle

do w/the defensive strategy designed by Carlisle to make Lebron a jump shooter and now allow him to get to the rim that Popovich also used in the 2013 finals that had Lebron second guessing himself in the first few gms of that series...

Yeah coaching had nothing to do w/that smh

It was his 4th quarter non-production that was the
most bizarre. That's not defense. That was mental.

He actually played well, even with that effective
defense (a defense much, much, much better than the
ones the Mavs had)

It's Lebron James. He can't really be stopped entirely.

He just bitched out vs. the Mavs.

Wade didn't, though.

29. "Bron let the defense off the hook in 2011 by not forcing the issue"
In response to Reply # 26

Carlisle loaded up on Bron's side by playing a zone & Bron fell into the trap by giving up the ball (being a decoy) instead of forcing the issue (ala 2007) which meant Chandler was able to camp in the paint while avoiding foul trouble along w/ Marion. In the 4th quarter he was even more passive as he was content taking a backseat to Wade who was their closer in 2010-11. Once Wade got hurt early in Gm 5 the series was essentially over since the onus was put on Bron to be a scorer but he still refused to force the issue.

That series wasn't dictated by the point guard play (until Gm 5/6) but rather by half-court defense: without Chandler manning the paint their zone defense wouldn't have been effective & they also had Marion/Kidd/Stevenson scrambling on the perimeter. In Gm 5/6 the Heat tried to play an uptempo game to avoid the Mavs half-court defense but that led to Terry/Barea getting easy baskets & open looks on the other end which was the nail in the coffin.

WHAT'S GOOD *****? What's REALLY good?!?!????!!! Ha HA!

In response to Reply # 17

Carlisle has been a Top 5 coach in the league for the past 12-15 years and will be in the Hall of Fame.

And tainting his Dallas ring due to Bron's meltdown still doesn't even out for the ring Larry Brown's deviousness cost him in Detroit in summer of 03 then Sheed deal in winter of '04 and/or what the brawl did to that Pacer team he had poised to win the East before you know what.

Rick Carlisle has served both Feel Jackson and Larry Brown their lunch for entire playoff series.

He never blew a first round series he was heavily favored to win like George Karl or Nelly or even Pop.

He never benefitted from the lottery and the best player the league has seen between Jordan and Bron in Duncan for two decades the way Pop has.

He never had even one of the league's best players on his roster, prolly not even Top 5 argument (at least regular season wise).

Finished under .500 once (and 35 wins, not those 16/17 win calamities Riley and Brown have had) when they traded away Artest and Jackson while O'Neal started his descent in the final Indiana year.

Carlisle's coaching resume>>>>Rondo's playing resume.

And he can let Rondo control the game with marionette strings and the pause button from Buffalo Wild Wings, this Dallas team aint getting out of round one either way.

And he was already a brand name by that point coming off his most successful NBA stint, while that Piston nucleus had been improving incremently annually under Carlisle then got a focused Sheed with something to prove and half a season to do so for a six-pack of Faygo on top of the team Carlisle had helped grow.

Toss in a Karl Malone injury, Shaq/Kobe powder keg and Laker meltdown in the Finals then voila, a title for LB ironically for the one team not assembled by his vision.

And without compensation despite being under contract to Philly because Ed Snider only cared about hockey.

And Carlisle's stubbornness cost him his job with the Pistons. He didn't want to play Tayshàun cuz he was a rookie, and didn't play him until the playoffs vs the Magic. He styled on T-Mac. Then styled on the bum ass Sixers. And they ended up in the ECF.

Sooooo....yeah Carlisle isn't good with change.

34. "No. Carlisle played Tay 30+ vs Sixers & LB refused to put Salmons on him"
In response to Reply # 33

instead leaving a one-legged Aaron McKie playing on a high-ankle sprain and considerable height/reach/athletic disadvantage on Tayshaun rather than put Salmons out there to stop the bleeding.

Because nobody hates change and actively avoids young players more than Larry Brown.

See: not playing Lebron & Wade over RJeff & Marbury in the '04 Olympics or DNP-ing Jalen his last year in Indy only to have him be their best player under Bird the very next season.

Tayshaun was a rookie, LB never would have put him in the game at all.

He didn't even let Salmons, a rookie of at least comparable physical dimensions/experience to another rookie in Prince who clearly was abusing McKie on both ends, enter a game to inbound a basketball until damn near everyone else on the team had five or six fouls.

He couldn't have played more than five total minutes in a six game series with overtimes in it.

Carlisle on the other hand seized the moment when he realized he had a mismatch like he did JJ Barrea versus the Lakers & Heat while with the Mavs.

Tay promptly turned back into a rookie versus Jersey where he was an absolute liability on offense......but even still there was no 'refusal to play him' going forward in a playoffs that after midway thru the first round he had basically averaged 28-30 minutes during.

There wasn't a exit interview dust-up where Carlisle banged his pennyloafer on a desk telling Joe D that he wasn't gonna play your boy next season.

And the difference in getting them over the hump the following year (as they had progressed incrementally for the two seasons before it) wasn't due to Tayshaun getting more tick it was due to getting a motivated Rasheed in his prime for a pair of guards who were basically Poor Man's Chauncey and redundant declining players by then (Chuckie Atkins & Lindsay Hunter).

That summer leading up to it, Larry Brown used his clout to backdoor Carlisle and sneak away from a Sixer team that had failed miserably to manage the cap or find a single other All-Star to put around Iverson after the Ratliff/Deke move and the Deke re-up which begat Van Horn than later Big Dog then CWebb's charred remains.

He had blown a #2 lotto pick the year after AI to yield Tim Thomas & Anthony Parker.

#8 on Larry Hughes rather than Pierce (who was a given, broke my pop's remote that day) or Dirk (who DiLeo, head of scouting, recommended we take).

So LB seized an opp to cozy up to Dumars & Davidson starting during the series, play his passive-aggressive politicking games to the hilt, use his many media aides to do his biding like his UNC buddy George Karl does then bump Carlisle while pretending he had nothing to do with it and didn't already know he was next up.....a bullshit story he sold to the old hockey owner in Philly who gave no fucks and liked LB/Specs.

And its ironic that the thing he spent his whole career killing Feel for in terms of walking into a pre-made championship-caliber team, was exactly what he did the one time he ever won in the NBA.

Rookie Tayshaun being outplayed by Air Gay had little to do w/ it. Kidd simply dominated Chauncey on both ends of the floor.

In 2004 Kidd struggled mightily since the Pistons were able to dictate the pace & suffocated the Nets w/ their half-court defense.

Both Jefferson & Tayshaun were exposed by the Spurs in the '03 & '05 Finals respectively as nothing more than hyped up role players.

Rondo's not blameless, but the way that situation has been getting spun did seem a little... one-sided. In any case, too much talent on that squad for all that bullshit.

he had a real good stint in detroit and won a title here. true the org has been kinda wayward but gatdamn, they are TOTALLY IRRELEVANT. i think the main reason he hasn't been canned is that they don't wanna pay two coaches (his salary is pretty high, too) while the team writhes around in futility

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
