Good depth move, and hopefully a sign that we are really going to try and shore up the LB spot. B Graham is likely gone, Casey is hopefully gone, and Demeco might get cut because he would miss the majority of the season with the achilles tear.

Buffalo trades their 5th Rd pick for Vikes 6th and give them a 7th Rd pick next year. Whether it's Manuel or Cassel, their only job is to not throw picks if and when they do throw it.

Josh McDaniels status. And with the same players no less. All that's left is for him to draft Tebow, which I assume is coming.

He's obviously not a full time back anymore, so if we're taking the committee approach they should have either drafted one or signed a guy that is younger and cheaper, or at least younger.

He still runs well, can catch out of the backfield, GREAT in protection, and very well-respected veteran leader. It's a great move for a short-term back.

It's a waste of money. He's not a no. 1 back anymore, he's going to be in a 3 way time share with Polk and Sproles. They could have done a lot better, got a rookie for pennies or a vet that isn't washed up.

Being in a time-share makes him even more effective because he doesn't have to carry any bulk, and if you need him to, like he showed into the late stages of last season, he still has the ability to effectively carry 25+ times.

People been calling Frank Gore done since 2001 and he keeps on going.

Last year Kaep fell off and they were also trying to get Hyde some touches but he was still basically doing the same Frank Gore level of production he had done in the prior three while actually rushing for a higher YPC.

it's not that scary of a backfield. Hopefully it will be adequate for 2015, they could have done worse but it's a gamble hoping that this year isn't the year he falls all the way off that cliff.

Chip's offense, with those three splitting carries, the QB running and the line being healthier and deeper hopefully.......that's got potential to be a running game.

I'd much rather do this for 3 mill per when we got money rather than waste a pick on a back in a draft we're almost surely gonna be sacrificing quantity of picks in.

There was no fit option on the market that fit better to me.

Now I just wanna sign McCourty.

and he's still one of the best rb's in the league at picking up the blitz.

Sure he's going to decline more this year and Shady had a down year, but he is by no means done. He is a 2nd tier RB which is all you really need anyway if you build a good team.

I'd much rather pay him 3 mill a year for the next couple years to play in a committee with Sproles and then have Polk as the young battle axe back.

That was as good as they were gonna do post-Shady.

Now they can concentrate on paying Maclin and McCourty then let it breathe for a second while shopping for deals.

i don't know how well he will fit Chips scheme. I would assume he will be the between the tackle back and Sproles the stretch plays. Stats are deceiving from last year considering we would go huge stretches with Hyde and letting Kaep chuck. I know several where he had great halfs and then was not used for the majority of the second. Great veteran, great back. If he works in Chips Scheme he will be great.

It looks like the team is going to keep Boykin in the slot which means we still need another outside corner.

Hearing some rumors about Orlando Franklin to replace Herremans....would love that move. Dude not only rates well but has only missed one game in his career thus far.

Good for Maclin. It'll be a reunion of sorts being that he is from Missouri. And he gets to reunite with Andy Reid. I wish him the best.

But damn, this hurts. J-Mac might not have been elite, but he was damn good and by far our best WR. He made so many unbelievable catches this year and really was the only WR that could consistently get open. I truly hope Matthews and Huff are ready to make that next leap bc I have no faith in bum ass Riley Cooper.

This stings. Not sure where to look now. Andre Johnson? Colston?

to handle this one.......shouldn't have even let it get near free agency but once they did they had to take the hit even on an overpay.

This marred what could have been an epic Sunday of win and it's their own fault because he wanted to stay here until they began dicking around even tho they had all the money but none of the leverage once they traded Shady and Cobb signed.

Think Torrey Smith went to Carolina, by the way.

What a shitshow.

i cosigned the shady move under the assumption that maclin would be bought back
jordan matthews and cooper need to step it up
i wouldn't be surprised if the system kept on chugging along
but letting maclin walk for nothing just seems like an unnecessary risk
god forbid jordan matthews gets injured in training camp or something like that
chip knows what he's doing though. he's dumping reid guys who didn't achieve shit
we just need to wait and see if his vision will work

In response to Reply # 83

Guessing Fitzpatrick's gone (stuill has a year left on his contract, though) and Hoyer's going to compete with Mallett in training camp. They both have a history with Bill O'Brien going back to New England, so we'll see I guess.

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12448116/ryan-mallett-houston-texans-agree-2-year-7m-deal

Ryan Mallett and the Houston Texans have agreed to a two-year, $7 million deal that will pay the quarterback $1.75 million in guaranteed money, a source told ESPN.

Mallett will receive all of the guaranteed money in the first year of the contract, according to the source.

The Texans also are expected to sign Brian Hoyer, although the free agent quarterback will field an offer Monday from the New York Jets, sources have confirmed to ESPN.

If Hoyer joins Houston, he likely would be in a competition for the starting job with Mallett, who started two games last season for the Texans. One of those starts ended in a win against the Cleveland Browns, but his other start was a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals, a game in which he played with a torn right pectoral muscle.

The Texans initially acquired Mallett in a trade with the New England Patriots on Aug. 31. Mallett had spent the first three seasons of his career with the Patriots, who selected him in the third round of the 2011 draft. Mallett played behind Tom Brady in New England and never saw any meaningful snaps. Texans coach Bill O'Brien was the Patriots' offensive coordinator in 2011.

Mallett, who turns 27 in June, spent the first nine weeks of the 2014 season backing up Ryan Fitzpatrick, who went 4-5 during that time. At their bye week, the Texans opted to bench Fitzpatrick in favor of Mallett.

Both general manager Rick Smith and O'Brien said during the combine that they hoped to re-sign Mallett. They praised Mallett's study habits and said it was apparent he had learned from being Brady's teammate.

with the salary that he would stay. That tells me the Hawks think he is pretty damn valuable.

In a league with a premium on corners and for a team that runs a lot of man-man cover responsibility along with having the worst and second worst passing defense in the past 2 years, he was priority #1.

I be he was holding out for more but saw what some of the other high quality edge rushers were getting offered and realized his price wasn't THAT high. No shame in that. He's a solid contributor. Glad to have him on board for several years to come.

In response to Reply # 0

www.freep.com/story/sports/nfl/lions/2015/03/11/nick-fairley-rumors-detroit-lions/70138760/

The Detroit Lions appear ready to move on from Nick Fairley after telling at least two agents that they are out of the running for the defensive tackle.

Fairley is visiting the Cincinnati Bengals today and had interest from about six teams before NFL free agency opened at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The Lions were in negotiations with Fairley's agent for part of Tuesday but could not come to an agreement on terms.

The team declined the fifth-year option on Fairley's rookie contract last spring, over worries about his health and drive, then watched as he missed half of the season with two sprained ligaments in his knee.

If Fairley or the Lions have a change of heart and rekindle negotiations, it wouldn't be the first time it happened. In 2011, the Lions finalized a deal with Stephen Tulloch after it appeared that it might not happen.

But Fairley, who has 13.5 sacks in four seasons with the Lions, could sign with the Bengals today.

The Lions could lose their top four defensive tackles from a season ago in Fairley, Ndamukong Suh, C.J. Mosley and Andre Fluellen. Suh is expected to sign the richest contract for a defensive player ever today with a the Miami Dolphins, a six-year, $114-million pact that includes $60 million guaranteed.

The Lions traded two draft picks to the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday for two-time all-pro Haloti Ngata to fill one of the holes. They're still in the market for another free agent defensive tackle and likely will take a rookie defensive tackle in this spring's draft.

If Fairley signs elsewhere, the Lions will have no players left from their 2010-11 drafts.

At the right price, a DT rotation of Fairley, Dan Williams, and Ellis would be a really nice combo... Fairley is more of a penetrator than the others and would be a good fit if motivated.

I like the Casillas pick up, local dude from NJ. Him and Cruz got the PR connection. Much needed issue of LB depth addressed, along with JT Thomas. Not doubt Spags' return is behind this new emphasis on LBs rather than CBs.

I like the Harris pick up, need a solid returner that can take some snaps at WR, perfect pick up as Trindon Holliday didn't work out last year. Can't have my boy ODB picking up special teams duty. that's just madness.

I like the Marshall Newhouse pick up as we unloaded some back up O-Linemen. With some added depth to the Schwartz, Richburg, Pugh, Beatty, Brett Jones lineup, they might not have to use their first picks at O-Line and focus on skill guys. Which brings us to LB.

With new LB picks ups and Herzlich retained, would be dope to have Kendricks from UCLA picked up at LB. Paired up with Kennard from USC would be fun to watch. With Beason so injury-prone the more the merrier.

Obviously the question is can he stay healthy...and hopefully the reduced workload combined with our conditioning/nutrition protocols will significantly help with that. When healthy, dude is a load to handle, one of the best post-contact runners in the league. Needs to work on his pass protection but that's par for the course with younger RBs.

Shady was scheduled to make 12 and wanted an extension (he's at 16 now in Buffalo with his bonus + base compensation).

I was quizzical because I thought the R Mathews deal was done...but it hasn't been signed yet which would make Demarco at a reasonable number make a lot of sense.

I think if you can trade a rb whose production can be similarly matched for far less money while acquiring a key position of need, that's a deal I am completely on board with. Clearly, that what Chip's plan since he then tried to sign Gore to a great value deal and then Mathews when that fell through...however, once Demarco personally reached out and that actually became a possibility, especially with his ability to run out of the shotgun and having played at this pace before, it completely changed the thinking.

Honestly, I was perfectly fine with Mathews-Sproles-Polk.

But the "chip didn't want to invest money in RBs" has been completely disproven at this point.

Now he can increase the pace even more because he will always have a fresh back on the field.

Also...after he traded Lesean, we had big offers out to both Maxwell and McCourty. Obviously the former stayed in NE (and no other safety commanding even close to that) so that leaves a good chunk of money to allocate somewhere else.

ever being a winner in the NFL. On a real note...not even trying to snark. I will never have an issue with these guys getting their money. They have a limited window for the most part and they put their bodies on the line, so they need their cash and security. I just wonder if this is an internal struggle for guys. I mean, he has to know he's probably never going to win anything of consequence as a Titan. Always been a fan of dude.

i likes ... i mean, he can't be as crazy as harvin, right?

http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12477833/mike-wallace-traded-minnesota-vikings-miami-dolphins

The Minnesota Vikings have acquired wide receiver Mike Wallace and a 2015 seventh-round draft pick from the Miami Dolphins for a fifth-round pick this year.

The trade was made before the Dolphins had to pay Wallace's $3 million bonus this weekend.

Wallace led the Dolphins in receiving yards (862) and touchdowns (10) and was second in receptions (67) this past season.

However, he fell out of favor in Miami following Week 17 sideline altercation in a loss to the New York Jets. Wallace was benched in the second half, which raised questions about his future with the team.

He also struggled at times to get on the same page with quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who wasn't consistent throwing deep passes to the speedy Wallace.

According to ESPN Stats & Information, Tannehill threw three more interceptions than TDs (seven to five) when targeting Wallace in 2013, although that ratio turned around significantly in 2014 (one INT, 10 TDs).

Miami traded for former New Orleans Saints receiver Kenny Stills on Friday, which made Wallace expendable. He was scheduled to make $9.9 million in 2015.

Wallace initially inked a $60 million contract with the Dolphins in 2013 after spending his first four seasons in the league with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Dolphins are in the process of overhauling their entire receiving corps.

In addition to trading Wallace, Miami also released former starter Brian Hartline and slot receiver Brandon Gibson. The trio accounted for 135 receptions, 1,631 yards and 13 total touchdowns in 2014.

He was disappointing in Miami, but here's hoping he can compliment Teddy's other weapons. Not sure he can be a #1 WR, but you can say that about all of our receivers. Wallace was a deep threat in Pittsburgh, and Teddy struggled throwing deep last year.

I assume this means the first round pick will be spent on the defensive side, which I like.

His guaranteed money is done after this year so they can cut him next year if it doesn't pan out. This gives Bridgewater a deep threat that was supposed to be Cordarelle. If anything, we traded Cassell for Wallace, which I'm cool with. A seemingly low-risk move.
