"Mets 2015 Post: Believe! Predict! Complain! Play Shortstop!"

People are predicting us as a wild card contender. They might be right. The whole season is likely going to rest on how Pigpen comes back from Tommmy John surgery.

They moved the fences in, maybe it helps Grandy.

Wright is allegedly healthy.

Thor is coming.

Cuddyer happened. Tulo didn't (thankfully).

Parnell's back, and might not really be needed to close. Bullpen actually looks solid for a change.

91 wins. Wild card.

Let's get it.

*Jews you*

"this is okp tho, reading is completely optional" (c) desus

Proceed with caution. I am overtly racist.

<-- In Pigpen we trust

on a sidenote the yankees are going to be terrible but vegas o/u had us both at 81.5.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Fireworks night certainly had a lot to do with the sellout, but it was refreshing to be at Citi with a full house cheering on a winner. The Mets have yet to have a good team in this stadium.

I'm a little scared to talk about it, for fear of jinxing it. But I really like this team.

Over granderson's shittiness?

Can someone name a worst acquisition than this dude? Roberto Alomar? Baerga? I need to look up their stats and see how they compare.

Is it just that the mets have sucked so bad that nobody really cares? If they're in wild card contention by the break I don't see how u can continue to stick this guy in the lineup. Don't care if he walks a lot, either.

They each struck out about once in every 4.5 plate appearances their first season.

Bay hit 36 hr the year before he came to the mets. Het hit 28 in his 3 seasons with new york.

Bay also had a slightly bigger contract than Granderson did.

>They each struck out about once in every 4.5 plate
>appearances their first season.

Fair enough. However, Bay's edge in batting avg is significant.

>Bay hit 36 hr the year before he came to the mets. Het hit 28
>in his 3 seasons with new york.

And Granderson hit 7 HR the year before coming to the Mets in an injury shortened season. Not sure how that reflects positively on the acquisition. He hit damn near 100 hr's the 2 years prior with the yanks. There was a very strong possibility that at Granderson's age that he was never going to regain his old form, especially in a difficult park like Citi compared to yankee stadium.

>Bay also had a slightly bigger contract than Granderson did.

LOL. An extra 1.5 million per year has significance on what exactly? They were both given exorbitant contracts and both have been epic flops.

Anyways, I feel like we're arguing over 2 last place finishers in the special olympics. To revert this back to something more relevant...what grade would you give Granderson's performance as a Met thus far? What are your thoughts on him remaining in the lineup going forward?

First off big whoop at he 30 percentage points higher than granderson 8n a season that bay couldn't stay in the lineup.

That 1.5 million per season at a time when contracts werent quite as big as they are now and what granderson did the season before shows how the expectations were bigger for bay.

As for granderson, he had a bad year last year along with every other met bat. I'd like to wait more than 2 weeks to judge him or call for his bat to be out of the lineup th is year, especially with the success the team is having. i'm happy that despite his early hitting struggles, he's still finding a way to get on base.

I'd be up to revisit this convo in a month tho

is there some other stat where Grandy crushes Bay?

Grandy was given 60 mil to bat clean up for the mets. If you think fan/management expectations were somehow lowered for dude then I don't know what to tell u.

Just so I know I'm not arguing w/a member of Grandy's PR team...how would you grade out the acquisition thus far? Do you think he would still be in the lineup if he wasn't a big name with a bloated contract?

>As for granderson, he had a bad year last year along with

And he's looked so much better this year while playing for a winning team.

Including last year into the sample size is perfectly fair game. Having said that, the question I posed was how should it be handled at the midway point of the season if the mets were still contenders.

I think the point that's trying to be made is that while Bay was awful for all three years of his contract, Granderson is 1 year (and 2 weeks) into a 4 year contract, so there's still time for him to either improve or beat out Bay as our worst FA signing.

What was Bay's contract to do? twiddle his thumbs in the clubhouse? He was supposed to be in the meat of the lineup as well.

Thus far? A C or a D maybe. But who's handing out grades based on 1 year and 3 weeks of a 4 year deal? There's a long list of players who were subpar in their first year with the mets + Grandy was not the reason the mets were bad last year.

I actually was not overly excited about the signing but i don't recall what other options were available. Not sure who really expected more than 25hrs and .250 batting from dude. Those were his max numbers in my mine for his best season (either this year or next)

At the midway point if he has low hr numbers and is batting <200 bench or platoon his ass. I think its more likely that he'll be closer to 10-15 home runs while batting hopefully around .240.

You have a strange definition of "crush". You want to ignore a 30 point differential in batting avg but then want to hype hitting a few more doubles despite far more plate appearances.

I'm not giving Grandy props for getting more AB's throughout the season since he did absolutely nothing with them. But yes, he's managed to stay injury free.

Total non sequitur but just to clarify yet again...Both were supposed to be the meat of the order. Both were given 60 mil dollar contracts. Both played on shitty teams. Both contributed a wealth of overpaid shittiness to a shitty team. You're trying so hard to prop up one vs the other and I'm basically calling it a wash. This idea that one of these two bums has "ethered" one or the other is nonsense.

>>

A C-grade is absurd but you're entitled to your opinion.

>But who's handing out grades based
>on 1 year and 3 weeks of a 4 year deal?

The manager filling out the lineup card every day? This isn't some rookie call-up. He's a 34 year old vet. How much time does he need? And sorry to be jaded but I've seen the mets throw money at bums more than a few times and the results tend to be equally disastrous.

>There's a long list of
>players who were subpar in their first year with the mets +

Right, not Grandy's fault, lmao. He was only given 60 mil to bat cleanup...how dare I expect him to pull his weight.

So the Mets Might Be Contenders
by Dave Cameron - April 20, 2015

As it stands this morning, there are five teams in the National League that have at least a 50% chance of reaching the postseason, according to our Playoff Odds forecasts. The three top teams are the same three that everyone had winning their divisions before the year began; the Dodgers, Cardinals, and Nationals. The fourth team — or first Wild Card, if you want to make it sound a little better — is the Padres, whose winter moves made the largest splash the world has seen since Noah decided to build an ark. And finally, as you’ve likely surmised from reading the headline, there’s the New York Mets, currently given exactly a 50/50 chance of reaching the postseason this year.

Yep, that puts the Mets ahead of the Pirates and Cubs, the two young darlings of the Central, each with rosters more stacked with young talent. It also puts the Mets well ahead of the Marlins, a trendy pre-season pick to make a run this year, but instead are a team that is reportedly considering firing their manager after getting their clocks cleaned in Queens over the weekend. After that four game sweep, the Marlins now find themselves seven games behind the Mets; it’s the largest gap between any two division rivals in baseball.

Of course, it’s still really early. It’s April 19th, and because the season started a week later this year, that date is even more deceiving than usual. We’re two weeks into a 26 week race. After 13 games last year, the Brewers were 10-3, standing with the best record in baseball; they went 72-77 after that point and finished six games behind the two Wild Card teams. While the games that have been played still count and can’t be taken away, a 10-3 start doesn’t mean the Mets are really a great team.

But that’s the thing about baseball in 2015; they don’t really need to be. They don’t even need to be particularly good, because in this day and age, a hot start and a roster that doesn’t suck makes you a contender.

The NL in 2015 is broken into four distinct tiers: there are the obvious division favorites, the Wild Card contenders, the Wild Card pretenders, and the Phillies. A visual representation might help.

(Graph)

Thanks to a strong start and a legitimately strong pitching staff, the Mets find themselves squarely in the seoncd tier. In reality, they probably aren’t as good as the Padres, Pirates, or Cubs, but the good news is that they don’t have to be. Their 10-3 start isn’t really predictive of anything — especially since their underlying BaseRuns performance suggests that a more normal distribution of those same events would have led to a 7-6 record at this point — other than the fact that the Mets just don’t need to win as many games going forward as their competitors do.

Our forecasts have the Mets as essentially a .500 team, which lines up nicely with their context-neutral performances so far. Their offense is mostly fine — though it will be tested now that they’re losing Travis D’Arnaud and are already without David Wright — with enough decent hitters to make up for the fact that they lack great ones. Their defense is very good at some spots (think center field) and less great at others (yeah, Wilmer Flores is still their shortstop). They run the bases okay. Their bullpen is not horrible, and could be better than that if Bobby Parnell comes back as a contributor.

And the rotation could very well be excellent, especially once they kick Dillon Gee out of it. Matt Harvey and Jacob DeGrom look like a formidable pair at the front, while Bartolo Colon refuses to age, and Jon Niese is a perfectly serviceable mid-rotation starter. With Rafael Montero set to join the rotation soon, and Noah Syndergaard and/or Steven Matz coming later this summer, the Mets have one of the best starting staffs in baseball.

Combine three parts meh with one part awesome and you end up with an alright team that won’t embarrass itself, and in the 2015 National League, that’s a Wild Card contender; especially when staked to an early lead over the other race-runners. I’m not going to argue that the Mets are as good as the Padres, Pirates, or Cubs, because I don’t think they are. The Padres can hit in a way that the Mets can’t. The Pirates have the NL’s best player and a better supporting cast of position players, plus a magical wand that forces opponents to hit the ball directly into their extreme defensive alignments. The Cubs have upside stacked on top of upside. All these things have stuff the Mets don’t have.

But the Mets have 10 wins, which is something that Chicago, Pittsburgh, and San Diego don’t have, and it’s not any better to have an extra +3 WAR player on your team than it is to have an extra three wins already in the bank. If you thought the Mets were a .500 team at the start of the year, then their current position is not much different than if they’d traded a Shake Shack Concrete for Ian Desmond on Opening Day.

We go through this every April, but it’s always worth repeating; regression to the mean doesn’t mean that a team (or player) that has had a good run is due for an offsetting bad run in order to even things out. That’s the gambler’s fallacy, and life doesn’t work that way. The Mets haven’t played well enough that we should dramatically alter our expectations of what they’re going to do going forward, but now, .500 ball for 24 weeks gets you an 85 win finish. And while 85 wins probably doesn’t get you the Wild Card, that’s the mean forecast out of a range of expected outcomes, and it doesn’t take very many things going New York’s way before that 85 turns into 88 or 89.

They could almost get there by taking the ball away from Dillon Gee and being aggressive on the trade market early in the year, limiting the number of at-bats and innings that have to go to replacement level players. Right now, we’re projecting 357 plate appearances for John Mayberry, because we don’t think Michael Cuddyer or Curtis Granderson can play the outfield all year long. You don’t have to look too terribly hard to find an outfielder better than John Mayberry, and if the Mets can scrounge up a solid fourth outfielder, all of the sudden this is a team projected to end the year with 86 or 87 wins.

In reality, the Mets are probably still the 7th or 8th best team in the National League, but they’ve already collected 10 irrevocable wins, and the 4th, 5th, and 6th best teams in the NL aren’t exactly monsters. The NL Wild Cards will be won by two flawed teams that likely over-perform their actual abilities by a half dozen games or so. The Mets are already further down that path than anyone else, and while it’s easy to look at this roster and see a bunch of question marks, there really does appear to be enough here to make September interesting at Citi Field.

I know its very premature but i wonder what happens when D'arnaud comes back

Cant wait to see our bullpen at semi full strength.

Would like to see a quality start from Dillon Gee

I don't see those Alex Torres caps catching on.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

I just read a crazy stat that Gee has had 48 straight starts of going 5 innings or more, which is the most in the majors, and 2 shy of Doc's team record.

He needs some kind of nickname that appropriately conveys how he is the most average pitcher in the world. He's basically a replacement player, and everything about him seems similar to a guy who is on your roster in year 23 of Dynasty Mode, when the computer is just making up random names and attributes.

he's finding a way to contribute despite his struggles. I wasnt exactly ecstatic about the signing when the mets did it and didn't expect much from him. Why would i be mad at him now? Seems to me the delusional ones are those that expected 30hrs or 100rbis from him.

But if the Mets signed him for 4 years, at least give him the majority of the 2 years to see what he's got, unless he's holding us back or there is a hot prospect whose growth he's stunting. Is that happening now?

like... what is it that you think we should be doing?

Granderson is CLEARLY underperforming compared to his contract and his career. But he's got 3 years left on his deal, which means he can still turn it around. Or he might not turn it around, and he'll just keep sucking.

In the meantime, he's trying to be productive by drawing walks and playing defense, while working on fixing his hitting.

So keep booing and pointing out that he's been underwhelming. I'll keep cheering for this team and hoping he does better.

Torres

That would have been one devastating pen. Looking forward to getting Parnell/Blevins back whenever that is. Just come back once you are def ready...especially Parnell.

Hopefully, we won't get to the point where we 'need' Mejia.

We've obviously slowed down offensively but i'm not too worried..we're missing Wright/D'arnaud and have been working in a lot of callups. I'm more concerned about what the long term solution is for the middle infield.

and by healthy I just mean Murph back. Anything from Wright at this point is a bonus. Not that excited about getting Aramis either. Rather roll with a combo of dilson, Murph and tejada between 2nd and 3rd.

If Wilmer can hit 20-25 home runs I can live with his defensive issues. I think his future is as a 2nd baseman though.

A Duda-Dilson-Wilmer-Murphy infield is adequate offensively. Like you said, anything from Wright is a bonus.

Right now we need his bat tho....but i think he'll be a starting 2nd basemen somewhere else next year.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Shoulda locked down Jose and let Wright either stick around and have some fun, or cut bait on one of the most garbage-time stars we've had since Kingman.

2012: 7.0
2013: 5.9
2014: 2.7

Meanwhile Reyes has remained level/improved:
2012: 2.9
2013: 2.6
2014: 3.2 (HUH. He even had a higher WAR than Wright last year!)

(To my earlier point, Tejada's had a total WAR of 2 the past three seasons and Wilmer's been literally "replacement," while Murphy, who would ostensibly have played third, posted 6 WAR since Reyes left)

not sure how that qualifies as a pro-Reyes argument.

by a whole 0.5 WAR! WOO-HOO!

meanwhile Wright has produced 77% more WAR than Reyes since Jose left.

I didn't see where you mentioned anything regarding this point before. at any rate, Tejada/Wilmer would've played 2nd in that case and still been in the lineup regardless, so not sure how this applies to your argument

Wright was the better player and projected to be better going forward as they aged. They made the correct decision. Sucks that he developed spinal stenosis and had this season wiped out but shit happens.

The fuck kinda horseshit is this? Wright played like an MVP down the stretch in 2007 & 2008. Reyes, not so much. Not David's fault the team crashed and burned around him.

In practice, that right-center alley of Citifield was practically built for Reyes to hit triple after triple into, while it and left center are where so many potential home runs for Wright went to die as soft flyouts. Which probably affected his swing mechanics, which led to the injuries.

The bottom line is that power-hitting third basemen are much easier to replace than a) elite leadoff hitters and b) top-tier shortstops, of which Reyes was both. Even internally, tell me the dropoff from Wright to Murphy wouldn't have been a hell of a lot shallower than the dropoff from Reyes to Tejada/Flores has been.

Citi field is certainly more tailor-made for Reyes' game. And yet after Reyes left Wright was still as good or better than Jose has ever been, until the injuries really started taking their toll.

>affected his swing mechanics, which led to the injuries.

could have been a contributing factor, but that's rather presumptuous to state as a certainty.

>The bottom line is that power-hitting third basemen are much
>easier to replace than a) elite leadoff hitters and b)

and how many of these power-hitting 3rd basemen were available/obtainable for the Mets, and wouldn't have their power affected playing at Citi field like Wright's was?

Even internally,
>tell me the dropoff from Wright to Murphy wouldn't have been a
>hell of a lot shallower than the dropoff from Reyes to
>Tejada/Flores has been.

As I pointed out before, in that scenario Tejada/Flores would've just played 2nd with Murphy at 3rd instead of SS with Murphy at 2nd, so the lineup around either Wright or Reyes would've been the same.

From 2010-2014, Wright's the best 3B in the NL by WAR. But Reyes is the second best SS in the entire game (Wright is 5th at his position). Now granted, if you drop that sample to 2012-14 (i.e. after Reyes went to Miami), Reyes drops to 6th while Wright stays 5th.

You're still talking about two elite players with very different games, one of whom is better suited to the place where you play 81 games.

Cabrera is listed #1 but he played most of his games at first.

And either way Wright's WAR tops Reyes' over both periods.

I'm not arguing anything other than you're now venturing into arguing for the sake of arguing.

bench Grandy? And play whom? mets starting pitchers are hitting for a higher .avg than their bench hitters, lol.

Mets had a great finish to the first half of the season and you're trying to dig this nonsense up from the grave. I don't really get it. A lot more interesting things we could be talking about, IMO.

him right today (4 months ago). I said can we at least wait till around the time he's halfway completed his contract to judge him.

In fact, i even said i'd be willing to revisit the topic in a month. If he was still struggling and barely hitting .200 I would have made a comment around now anyway stating that so far i'm wrong.

the goal of the conversation is just to reevaluate what was said. WE can just look above, its all there lol. I feel pretty confident in standing by what i said above. Do you?

But lets not act holier than thou and pretend that bringing something up from 3 months ago is par for the course on the boards.

that he's the same highly overpaid bum as last year?

he is who he is at this point. he'll bat .240'ish, get a on a few hr streaks throughout the course of a season but not a consistent power threat (he had a hot streak right before the all star break season as well), strike out a lot, walk a lot and do nothing else worth mentioning. not THE worst free agent signing of mets history but one of the worst. so congrats on this tremendous feat, curtis! please enjoy your lamborghini collection with our thanks.

God Bless Grandy, JMJ and Muno. And Lucas Duda, for being such a lunk (in the best way possible).

From the comments: "duda looks like bryce harper’s schlubby older brother that is the more loveable sibling that everyone gravitates towards and says things like ‘why is your brother such a chode basket?’"

In response to Reply # 0

Given the demanding fan base, it would have been easy to make showy panic trades in previous seasons. But Sandy held firm saying "look, we're not one or two guys away from being contenders (in 2010-14). we have a plan. we're developing talent, building a farm system, and getting prepared for the future."

and here we are, in a pennant race with a roster chock full of homegrown players, and picking up FOUR guys at the deadline without even touching our top 5 prospects.

That's Sandy making a plan and sticking to it.

injuries when the time comes, i don't want to hear it. I understand and i'm fine with 6th man rotation, skipped starts in August and early September. But when it comes down to the stretch run and.or playoffs, let these dudes pitch. If you want to limit their pitch count to <100, do that.

If these guys gon get hurt, they gon get hurt. You scared, get a dog.

First of all, from a Yankee fan, fuck y'all...lol

The question is do any of you guys think that some of the pitchers are getting the Linsanity treatment? Meaning that they are way overhyped?

Matz has pitched 2 games (albeit GREAT games). Wheeler, even when healthy never looked great. And to be perfectly honest, DeGrom and Syndergaard look better than Harvey (who got hyped with that Dark Knight bs)

Are any of you nervous that those guys will come down to earth? And how good is that Montero kid you got waiting?

Matz was projected as being better than Syndergod, Syndergod just got called up 1st. HArvey is still working his way back from Tommy John and still posting a sub. 3.00 era in what is going to be a down year for him. Degrom might be better than Harvey when its all said and done. Wheeler is our 5th best out of the bunch. Anything we get from him is a bonus.

I think Harvey and Degrom deserve all the hype they are getting and when you factor in Matz and Syndergod as the #3 and #4 starters, I don't see how the rotation shouldn't be getting the hype they are getting.

we could be looking at something approaching the Braves' rotation in the 90s.

Only our #4 could be WAY better than Steve Avery.

Matz's *major league* performance is getting a little Linsanity, because he only had two starts and then got hurt, so those two great starts become legend. But like Cenario said, his scouting report was off the charts, so the overall excitement is warranted.

Harvey is still recovering from surgery, but before getting hurt was good enough to start the all-star game, and he's been very good in his first year back. Dark Knight is a terrible nickname. He's Pigpen.

If deGrom had offense around him in the first half, he'd be in Cy contention (he still is, but it's Greinke's to lose), and won ROY (albeit in a down year) last year.

Thor is a beast.

I was never super high on Wheeler, and right now he's looking like our #5 starter next year, which is crazy. To date in the majors, he looked solid, but not spectacular.

I like Montero better than Wheeler, but he's only shown flashes in the bigs.

I'm more nervous about the fact that there's no way that all of them are going to get big paydays, so the clock is ticking until they break up.

Fair enough. I heard a lot about him, but I was telling my boys he only has 2 games under his belt.

Also fair. He was looked at as the savior, but people (like myself) keep forgetting he's coming off Tommy John's

That's the biggest problem. You got such a loaded lineup, and NOW the hitting has woken up. Thing is, what's the point of all those great pitchers if there's no run support. They'll be a bunch of Felix Hernandez's in the lineup.

>I was never super high on Wheeler, and right now he's looking

Agreed. Although he doesn't want to be traded, if you can get another bad to really fortify the lineup, deal him

>I like Montero better than Wheeler, but he's only shown
>flashes in the bigs.
Don't know that much about him, but from what I heard he's unbelievable. Thing is, if he's as good as advertised, then what? Send Niese down? (Niese hasn't been bad at all for you guys)

>I'm more nervous about the fact that there's no way that all

That's what's gonna suck. I know the Wilpons are looking down the line and are like fuck! We actually gotta spend some money to keep this rotation together.

The window is now...and now that the Nationals are choking away the division, you guys gotta hold on.

due to injuries and lousiness, we previously had a bench of Campbell, Kirk, Mayberry, Monell, and Muno. All of them suck.

With the recent pickups, plus TDA and Murphy back, when Cuddyer and (if) Wright comes back, our bench will be Johnson, Uribe, Lagares/Kirk, Flores, and Plawecki, which is considerably better. The biggest problem with the offense was that bench players were thrust into starting roles.

As for Niese, I think he'll get traded for another bat or a reliever. ULHTTB (c) Walleye, is a valuable trait in this league and I think he'll get us something decent in return.

Mets' pitchers dominating with elite heat

Staff leads baseball in percent of pitches topping 95 mph

By Mike Petriello / MLB.com | July 27th, 2015

Of the 885 1/3 innings the Mets have thrown this year, 30.7 percent have been thrown by the soft-tossing trio of Jon Niese, Bartolo Colon and Dillon Gee. Those three pitchers have combined to throw 4,034 pitches, and only 4,027 of them -- which is to say, all but seven -- have failed to reach even a modest 93 mph.

The Mets have given nearly one-third of their pitching innings to three players who don't throw all that hard, which is notable because it makes what the rest of the staff has done even more impressive. Despite Niese, Colon and Gee, the Mets are still baseball's leaders in percent of pitches thrown at 95 mph -- and it's by a landslide:

http://twitter.com/mike_petriello/status/623660928740032513/photo/1

Put another way, the difference of 7.7 percentage points between the Mets and the Indians at No. 2 is roughly the same as the difference between Cleveland and No. 24 Colorado. The Mets aren't just topping the game in heat, they're lapping the field, and it's important to remember that they're doing this with exactly zero contribution from two of their three hardest throwers from 2014: Vic Black (95.7 mph over 34.2 innings) and Zack Wheeler (94.7 mph over 185 1/3 innings).

Of course, last year they didn't have Matt Harvey, who has pumped in 873 pitches at 95 or above -- the second most in baseball behind Gerrit Cole. Last year, they also didn't have Noah Syndergaard, who has had 61.15 percent of his pitches hit at 95 or higher -- the best rate of any starting pitcher in baseball. Last year, they didn't quite have this, either: Jacob deGrom, who had increased his 95-plus rate from just 7.16 percent to 26.78 percent, prior to outdueling Zack Greinke by tossing 7 2/3 scoreless innings in a 3-2 win over the Dodgers.

Given deGrom's partial season in 2014, the only true full-time carryover has been flamethrowing reliever Jeurys Familia. But the turnover hasn't mattered, with the younger members of the rotation being impressive enough that Harvey's minor struggles in recovering from Tommy John surgery have been more of a speedbump than a catastrophe.

Take Syndergaard, for example, who has been as effective on a rate basis this year as David Price. It's time to pump out an update of the Statcast™ exit velocity pitching leaderboards, and realize that as we learn more and more about how these numbers correlate to success, the sheer value of the names alone on this board make it clear that limiting exit velocity really, really matters.

Lowest exit velocity, pitchers (minimum 120 batters faced)
1. Clayton Kershaw, 83.64 mph
2. Chris Sale, 84.84 mph
3. Jake Arrieta, 85.18 mph
4. Dallas Keuchel , 85.49 mph
5. Syndergaard, 85.51 mph

That's pretty impressive company to be in, but it points to something interesting. The outstanding velocity coming toward the plate from Syndergaard hasn't led to solid velocity going back out. The pitcher allowing the hardest exit velocity (more than 91 mph) is Kansas City's Yordano Ventura, who averages nearly 95 mph on every pitch. The top starting pitcher in terms of velocity, Nathan Eovaldi, allows hitters to top 90 mph off the bat. Syndergaard has managed to do what his fellow velocity kings haven't, which is to keep hitters from pounding his fastball (exit velocity of only 87.80 mph), while mixing in a curveball at 82 mph with a 17.4 percent swinging strike rate.

Syndergaard, who faces James Shields and the Padres on Tuesday, has recently begun adding a wicked slider to his repertoire. If he continues throwing it as hard as he has been to qualify for the leaderboards, he'd have five pitches living in the top 15 velocity charts. Only one other National Leaguer can say the same. Guess who: Harvey. You're probably not surprised it's another Met.

After all that, and we never got around to discussing Steven Matz, who added another 50 pitches of 95 or above in his short stint earlier this summer. The Mets just can't seem to stop finding talented strong-armed pitchers, and it's easily the biggest reason why they're just two games behind Washington in the NL East.

A kick in the ass never hurt...we lost to a good team and i don't want these guys getting to complacent and coasting since washington looks like ass.

On the other bright side, if we do make the playoffs, we likely avoid STL,Chic, Pittsburgh until the NLCS is i understand the playoffs seeding correctly.

On the 3rd bright side, when playoffs roll around, Degrom, Harvey, Syndegaard, Neise/Matz is quite a rotation.

I want to see how we bounce back against Bal this week.

Pitt is a better team than us, and we took them to extra innings in back to back games. Meaning we can hang with them. Since the trades, this team can hang with any team in the league. We've lost 5 games since the trades, and 4 were by one run.

Our pitching rotation plus a healthy Wright might tip the scales come October.

4-5x a week. Uribe is more than capable as a backup. He can probably come in as a defensive sub in late innings as well. In any event, we really don't need Wright in our lineup every day anyway.

Philly is playing much better of late. Hopefully we can take 3 out of 4 from these guys.

And the Mets have caught up to the Dodgers in the standings. Which means we have a great chance at hosting the NLDS. Its funny that the 3 best teams record wise in the NL (Cards, Cubs, Pirates) are going to have to fight amongst themselves to make it to the NLCS.

There should not be any talk of "we don't need Wright in the lineup every day anyway..." That dude has been your best player for a few years and has had to put up with playing with bums...So when y'all suddenly have a chance to make some playoff noise u wanna "trot him out there?"

him being healthy enough to play every day. Do you know about the condition he has or what he has to do before every game? He's not just returning from injury..he's returning from a back condition that he'll have for the rest of his career.

Him playing every day (even for the rest of this season) just isn't realistic.

Yeah...I know about the back issues. I'm sure it's something to keep an eye on. But hey...Baseball players battle injuries like that all the time. I'm pulling for the Mets and Wright. I'm hoping my Cubs meet up with y'all in the 'Offs....That would be some magical shit....

And its more than simply something to keep an eye on. Its unlikely that DWright can be the everyday 3rd basemen going forward. Honestly, his best bet for extending his career is getting a gig in the AL where he can DH.

And that's not a knock on Wright at all but the reality of the situation. If we didn't have dudes like Flores/Uribe on the bench, we'd be that more reliant on Wright, but again, thats not a knock on the captain.

Mets had a plan all along that Harvey felt was too c9nservative. Now all of a sudden, he-s worried about the future, and if the mets have his best interests in mind?

Jeez I hate Scott boras.

So harvey requested to pitch against the yankees for 1 of his remaining 2 starts? foh.

This dude has shown and said himself he needs to pitch on regular rest. I'd say sit him down until the last week and a half of the season(provided we still have our cushion) and let him get his 2 starts then on regular rest and pitch him in the playoffs.

Don't just spot start him twice against 2 good teams. Especially when we got Degrom, MAtz, Syndergaard, and the NL Player of the Week cooking.

Granted, it's small business, but you don't want to have one of the faces of the franchise doing all this...trying to pick and choose who he goes against is just ugh

Especially since he just got tattoo'ed against Washington and had to be bailed out. His head is all over the place.

The good thing for the Mets is that the division race is all but over. If it were tighter like the Yankees race this would be a bigger shitstorm

Fuck the Mets though...lol

The Mets staff has a 2.81 ERA in the playoffs, best of all 10 teams (would be 2.48 if not for Goeddel's awful mop-up performance in Game 3 against the Dodgers)

The Royals and Blue Jays are 4.55 and 4.84 respectively, which are the two worst of the playoff teams.
