"FYI: Byron Scott is doing a magnificent coaching job. "

The West is crazy, but he's got 11 wins with a garbage team. Utter trash. Kobe has been good like half the time, but he's got more wins than more talented teams and should be commended for benching Lin/Boozer, letting Kobe rest, and a lot of close losses. As much as I want that top 5 pick, the Lakers have historically built through FAgency more than the draft so fuck it.

Get em, B Scott.

there are three teams with five wins. they are mortal locks to continue sucking, too. i guess theoretically minnesota could improve.

like the lakers, detroit has been buoyed in the standings from dead ass last place to plain old last place. they still suck and seem dysfunctional though and speaking of that, never underestimate sacramento and charlotte's ability to collapse. i mean the hornets have had the "good fortune" for stillborn to be a complete joke and now al jefferson is out for a month. we saw how godawful they were with him playing at 40% in them 'offs. orlando and utah are also wet enough behind the ears to reel off a bunch of losses in a row.

that "top" five is looking tougher and tougher to crack.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Of course it takes time for a team to get used to a new regime/system so we are seeing that acclimation process occur (especially on the offensive side, it's light night and day in terms of player movement compared to the start of the season), but more importantly imo, he hasn't been afraid to make key personnel changes such as (as you mentioned) getting Lin and Boozer off the bench which tells me he isn't afraid of making changes. Lastly...finally getting Kobe to sit down and realize he needs rest is remarkable considering we all know hoe stubborn Kobe is. Obviously their friendship and history help but that still speaks to B Scott's ability to personally communicate with and have authority with players.

Whatever's gonna happen with the pick is what it is. I mean, even with a bottom 5 record, we're not guaranteed our pick anyway - so might as well just try. Close losses are good, but I'm like...whatever. At some point we're gonna have to give up that pick, and we're not gonna be good next year either so let's just improve now.

I think having a high draft pick this year + Randle definitely makes us significantly more attractive to free agents and/or attractive trade assets (perhaps packaged with this years Houston pick). If one of them actually turns out to be a star, all the better, but overall it puts us in a significantly different position going forward. Of course getting the pick is not guaranteed even if we don’t fall in the top five, but it’s all about maximizing the odds.

Two young guys (three if we kept the Houston pick) on the roster gives us a better shot of landing, , say, Marc and/or, say, Dragic (clearly a long shot for both, shit, even one, but still), that instantly makes us significantly better next year. Of course a guy like Marc might be angling more for a team where he’s the guy that potentially puts them over the top (if a team likeOKC or GS could find a way to pull off a sign & trade for him, for example), but that’s precisely why getting another high pick is that much more valuable in our current position.

We're not guaranteed that pick even with a bottom 5 record (which we have right now, btw) - so even trying hard means we're still bad. I'm fine with that.

Also, and I have faith in Mitch, but not all lottery picks work out, and we DO have a late first rounder as well. That pick could be in the 20s. So we've got 1-2 rookies next year, plus Randle, plus old Kobe, plus tons of cap room.

I'm also not counting Mitch out of pulling a trade this season.

what is the plan?

agreed, on the HC, seems like Byron is a good fit

I'm assuming there's 1 more year for Kobestans, otherwise we'd be doing the Jeter farewell thing...?

I'm guessing they shut it all the way the FOK down at some point

to improve on draft position

and should be player in FA 15' with their cap space

I guess the question remains

who wants to play with the elderly Mamba?

I know a wide range of laker fans from the nerdiest analytics heads to the biggest meatheads ranging In Age from 8 to 80 and this is the first time I've seen magnificent used.

Average? Ok solid. Maybe. Magnificent?

Your my dude but the 11 wins is more than exactly 3 teams and equals 1.
The 3 teams worse than the lakers are: Philly, Ny, and minn.
None of those teams are more talented than the lakers based off just having kobe. You can argue the 4th team is more talented, but they're about to zoom past 11 wins anyways.

If anything you shoulda cited that several of the lakers wins are against top teams

Gs, San Antonio, atl, Toronto

But yea he's been mediocre to me - and remember I'm a guy who idolized Byron. He's my favorite laker player of all time. This isn't about benching Lin (though his reason for it made no sense) because I think it's better for both the lakers and Lin to have him come off the bench. Since the lineup change lakers are now a top 3 scoring bench- and that's helped keep them in most games.

Overall though -He hasn't been very creative offensively- though as la2 cited there's been more action lately since they instituted the side pnr. He's had poor clock management like the snafu the other night. His set plays out of timeouts- blah.
Defense is still second worst in the league despite him professing defense (it was worst up until a few games ago). His in game adjustments are non existent, though like la2 said he's done a decent job with more long term adjustments. He has gotten kobe to sit out which is great- but Kobe's minutes haven't really been cut despite him saying so.
Finally he hasn't been playing Clarkson enough- especially if this is a lost season.

He has let the team start shooting more 3s - which had actually helped win a few games.

It's still too early to call him a just but magnificent? That's some weird preemptively posting this so Oe doesn't do it first shit?
Excuse the typos I'm on my phone.

cause theres no reason for it even in you are exaggerating the magnificent.

I mean maybe it seems good now because the beginning of the year was so bad -- but this is about where they should be.

Do you guys really see Byron as the guy you want long term?

Again none of my friends are sold yet.

Like I said LA2....hes just keeping the seat warm for Kobe.

That Kobe GOAT head coach is coming and all you guys who said he could never coach have seen him start to warm into that role. Dude loves basketball too much to be away from it.

I think he's certainly overachieving, especially given the personnel and the injuries. The wins over good teams is kinda nice too. Anyhow, I like him a lot right now and he's making due with a bad roster.

..there is nothing magnificent about anything related to the lakers this year.

have they shown signs of improvement?

yes.

that doesn't take away from the fact that they're thin at almost every position and make far too many mistakes to celebrate anything (even the few games they've won). scott's greatest achievement so far this season was taking kobe to task and sitting him, and even that was a no-brainer.

i'm a fan of byron scott and impressed with his ability to not only navigate, but weather the storm. his brand of discipline & poise are exactly what this team need, but let's get it straight:

he's doing what he's s'posed to do. nothin' more, nothin' less.
