http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/12076729/college-football-playoff-how-ohio-state-buckeyes-were-built-recruiting-trail

Urban Meyer no longer can throw a rock outside his office and hit the best speed or defensive lineman in the land as he could at Florida. That means he must work a little harder to infiltrate Southern states and the Eastern Seaboard. The early returns have been promising with the likes of Joey Bosa (Florida), Vonn Bell (Georgia), Raekwon McMillan (Georgia) and Eli Apple (New Jersey). However, the reason for Ohio State's run to the playoff can almost be directly correlated to Meyer's ability to recruit and develop quarterbacks: The Buckeyes are now using their third-string signal-caller.

Cumulative recruiting class rankings
Only Alabama, Florida State and Florida have recruited more talent over the past five years than Ohio State. Since Urban Meyer arrived in Columbus in 2012, the Buckeyes have equaled the Seminoles on the trail and are far and away the best recruiting program in the Big Ten.

Philosophy in action
When Meyer arrived, he inherited a prototypical dual-threat quarterback and the perfect person to lead his spread attack in Braxton Miller. With Miller at the helm, the Buckeyes rattled off 24 straight wins and entered 2014 as a Big Ten and national championship contender. However, Miller injured his shoulder in the preseason, thrusting redshirt freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett, Meyer's first QB signee, into the starting lineup. The Buckeyes offense did not miss a beat under Barrett, and he emerged as a legit Heisman contender before he too was lost for the season with a broken ankle in the Michigan game. Enter Cardale Jones, a massive pocket passer, originally signed to lead former coach Jim Tressel's run-first offense, who lit up Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship. Most programs couldn't survive all that, but Meyer's ability to get the most out of his signal-callers, even ones who lack ideal physical traits for his system, like Jones, is the reason Ohio State is playing in the College Football Playoff.

Out-of-state pipeline
The state of Ohio is the Midwest's most talented, and more than half of the Buckeyes' roster is homegrown. Still, the Buckeyes also have recruited well in the Southern states. It might be Meyer's old stomping ground, but former head coach Jim Tressel handpicked several difference-making talents from the region, like Ryan Shazier (Florida) and Bradley Roby (Georgia), two NFL first round picks, as well as Buckeyes starting tight end Jeff Heuerman (Florida). More recently, Meyer hit a home run with St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) product Joey Bosa, the Big Ten's top pass-rusher.

Recruits who exceeded expectations
Wide receiver Devin Smith came to Columbus as a three-star in 2011, but he has emerged as the premier deep threat in the Big Ten. Smith, who has averaged 20 yards per reception for his career, now has more receiving touchdowns at Ohio State than anyone other than David Boston. On the other side of the ball, another former three-star, Darron Lee, has been a big-play machine at linebacker, registering 13.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks as a redshirt freshman.

Signature recruit now in the NFL
Since Urban Meyer's tenure has not been long enough to produce any NFL draft-eligible players, the Buckeyes' signature signee is linebacker Ryan Shazier, who was part of Tressel's last class. Meyer's goal is to have the fastest team in the nation, and Shazier, who ran a 4.4 40-yard dash in high school, is one of the fastest linebackers from the past few years. Shazier is the perfect example of an out-of-region difference-making talent, but his reign as the signature recruit will come to an end as soon as Bosa, a Meyer recruit, is eligible for the NFL draft. Like Shazier, Bosa is a singular talent plucked from the Sunshine State to dominate the competition in the Big Ten. He's just better and more productive. -- Tom Johnson and Tom Luginbill

Despite a coaching change and a postseason ban, Ohio State has maintained an elite level of recruiting. The Buckeyes' 2015 class ranks No. 5 overall. Here's a look at the classes that built this year's playoff team.

Year Rank ESPN 300 Commits Top Recruit
2010 16 4 Roderick Smith
2011 7 7 Steve Miller
2012 6 5 Noah Spence
2013 3 17 Gareon Conley
2014 7 11 Raekwon McMillan

Sustaining success in 2015
Ohio State has the No. 5-ranked recruiting class in 2015 and could see that ranking jump even higher come signing day. The Buckeyes have done an outstanding job landing elite prospects from all over the country, including five-stars Justin Hilliard, Torrance Gibson and Jashon Cornell. Ohio State has excellent depth, losing only a few players to graduation after this season. Because this is such a young team it might be difficult to find extensive playing time for this 2015 class, but there could be a few who push through. Hilliard, Gibson, athlete Eric Glover-Williams or a few of the defensive line commits including Cornell, Dre'Mont Jones and Joshua Alabi might see some time next season.

What the future holds
Ohio State also is off to a fast start in the 2016 class with four commitments, including two ranked within the ESPN 300. All four prospects are from the state of Ohio, and the group is led by running back George Hill and offensive lineman Tyler Gerald. The success won't stop there, though, as coach Urban Meyer has this team rolling on the recruiting trail. Heck, the Buckeyes even have a quarterback committed in the 2017 class with Danny Clark. If Ohio State can make it into the championship game of the CollegeFootball Playoff, who knows the amount of success this team could have in the future. -- Tom VanHaaren

3. "ESPN Insider - How The Ducks Were Built"

http://insider.espn.go.com/college-sports/recruiting/football/story/_/id/12077152/college-football-playoff-how-oregon-ducks-were-built-recruiting-trail

How the Ducks were built
The "cool" factor has allowed Oregon to extend its recruiting footprint

If you change the uniforms, they will come. And come they have, from all regions of the country. Oregon has thrived on the "cool" factor, which has afforded the opportunity to infiltrate otherwise untouchable areas, like Texas and Hawaii, to expand the Ducks' footprint. The whole key for Oregon's recruiting under Mike Bellotti, Chip Kelly and now Mark Helfrich has been getting players to come on campus, which isn't easy given the location. However, when they do, Oregon usually wins. The Ducks have developed and evaluated very well and are starting to attract more high-profile guys, such as RB Royce Freeman.

Cumulative recruiting class rankings
Based on recruiting rankings alone, the Ducks have no business being in the College Football Playoff. Over the last five years, Oregon has recruited the 18th-best talent in the country, far behind the three other playoff teams: Alabama (first), Florida State (second) and Ohio State (fourth). Despite falling short in the national rankings, the Ducks have recruited very well in the Pac-12; only USC has brought in higher-ranked players in that time span.

Philosophy in action
The "cool" factor gives Oregon the opportunity to evaluate longer than just about any program in the country. In fact, from 2010-13, the Ducks built the majority of their classes (56 percent) after November of a player's senior year. Plus, the Ducks don't make an offer to a player until they see them in person on campus, which gives the coaching staff even more time for evaluating recruits. This wait-and-see approach has helped the Ducks identify and secure under-the-radar prospects and late bloomers while limiting their misses. By waiting out the recruiting process, Oregon finds exactly what it wants and needs and competes for championships.

Key out-of-state pipeline
Unlike the other College Football Playoff participants, the Ducks do not reside in a talent-rich state. Oregon, which has produced only the 35th-most FBS prospects since 2006, simply does not provide enough players to field a competitive team, so the Ducks must find talent in other places, like California. Over the last five classes, 31 percent of Oregon's signees are from the Golden State, including difference-makers Ifo Ekpre-Olomu, De'Anthony Thomas, Royce Freeman and Hroniss Grasu. While California is Oregon's main pipeline, the Ducks recruit nationally, as players from 22 states have suited up over the last few seasons. Oregon's ability to convince players to venture way beyond 274 miles from home, the median for all FBS recruits, has been a great asset on the trail.

Inside Oregon's Classes
Oregon's recruiting classes are generally nowhere near the top 10 in the rankings, and the 2015 class is ranked No. 19. Development and long-range scouting is the name of the Ducks' game as finding the right fit is more important than star power.

Year Rank ESPN 300 Commits Top Recruit
2010 22 4 Lache Seastrunk
2011 14 5 De'Anthony Thomas
2012 18 3 Arik Armstead
2013 26 5 Thomas Tyner
2014 27 5 Arrion Springs

Recruits who exceeded expectations
Marcus Mariota just won the Heisman Trophy, but he was not a heralded recruit coming out of Saint Louis High School in Honolulu, Hawaii. Mariota, who was more of a track star in high school, started only one year under center and had just one other football scholarship offer. On the other side of the ball, cornerback Ifo Ekpre-Olomu was a four-star coming out of high school, but he was not offered by in-state powers USC and UCLA. In Eugene, Ekpre-Olomu has played like a five-star, as he is a three-time, first-team All-Pac-12 player and an All-American in 2014.

Signature recruit now in the NFL
Although he is small in stature, De'Anthony Thomas was a hugely hyped prospect coming out of Crenshaw High School (Los Angeles) in 2011. Thomas was the No. 16 player in the country, one of the fastest and most dynamic players in recent memory as well as a Pop Warner legend who was anointed the "Black Mamba" by rapper Snoop Dogg when Thomas was just 12 years old. He was a big-deal recruit, and his signature was an even bigger deal for Oregon because it made Eugene a legitimate destination for the best players in California, specifically Los Angeles. -- Tom Johnson and Tom Luginbill

Sustaining success in 2015
Oregon looks destined to finish, at worst, with a top-20 recruiting class in 2015. With this class, the Ducks have officially turned the corner from grabbing under-recruited prospects who fit their system and are instead winning huge recruiting battles for some of the country's top prospects. Immediate impact players dot the top of the class, as 6-foot-6, 280-pound defensive end Canton Kaumatule will enroll early and could see time in the rotation as a freshman. Running back Taj Griffin isn't likely to supplant Royce Freeman as the starting tailback but is talented enough to not need a redshirt year.

What the future holds
The 2016 class is already off to a fast start for the Ducks, as they hold commitments from three ESPN Junior 300 prospects. Quarterback Seth Green was Oregon's top target at the position, while safety Brady Breeze is a local standout and wide receiver Dillon Mitchell is a two-sport star with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Mississippi State and Ohio State, among others. The Ducks don't often send out a number of offers to the upcoming class, but Oregon's success on the field already has it in the mix for recruits who could make next year's haul ever more impressive than the 2015 group. -- Erik McKinney

But my head says OSU has the advantage on the OL and a better defense than the Ducks. Oregon has had a remarkable season and has overcame a lot of injuries on both sides of the ball this season so to even be one of the last two teams standing and playing for a national championship is a great accomplishment.

Plus, as much as I respect Helfrich for what he has accomplished this season I still give the coaching advantage to OSU.

As listed by Oregon, I'll believe these numbers when I see them confirmed at the Combine. No way is Armstead really 290.

FSU isn't chopped liver and UO coasted after the 3rd quarter, much like TCU against Ole Miss

Oregon puts extreme pressure on you to not whiff on a tackle in space, blanket that route, be accountable for Mariotta runs, cover the entire field much like Baylor....it's an incredible headache

It is still Cardale's 3rd start on the biggest stage of his career, if it's a shootout, who do you trust not to crack? Cardale or a guy who has been nails forever?

I do think OSU has an advantage in the line play, get tired of Pollack and SEC guys talking about the 'Bama defensive line even today being elite when they got blown up by a better group in Columbus on both sides of the ball. Annoyed me as much as when Randy Gregory is labeled an SEC level DE when he grew up in Fishers, IN and played for Nebraska.

The more points are scored, more it favors UO to me. OSU gets in the backfield repeatedly and Double E has 125 yards at the half....well we know how it ends up.... Should be a great matchup

FSU was driving to score on all three of those third quarter drives before they fumbled the ball to kill those drives. I don't think Oregon can count on three consecutive OSU drives to end in fumbles recovered by Oregon.

I mostly agree but Cardale didn't crack being down 21-6 to Bama

Wish they would just play again at the Rose Bowl since we got a traditional BIG 10/Pac 10 match up. We've been blessed with some great bowl games these past several days. Let's hope the final is just as entertaining and engaging.

Since we're going all in with the hyperbole, might as well go Full Walton with it.

Sidebar: why did Urb pass that deep ball with under two minutes last night?

I don't feel like going back to the big game post now and watched in a bar so didn't hear postgame last night but was just curious where the logic was on that call.

I think everyone just lost their shit after EzE's run and forgot there was still a game to be played with 3 min left. It was just a state of chaos and euphoria and nobody was thinking straight.

Even with Tyvis running it out of the end zone after that interception...WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING?!?!?!?

that whole thing reminded me of Oberyn Martell vs The Mountain. The monster isn't dead until it's DEAD. OSU majorly flirted with disaster in those final 3 min.

Don't need 300 replies in a game post before it starts.

I think I'm leaning Bucks, just because that DLine may be able to mimic what Auburn did and disrupt Oregon's whole shit. And those wr screens that destroyed fsu just won't have the same effect.

Then again, you can run on osu, this offense is probably the best Oregon had had (shout to Dennis Dixon though), and cardale is still a concern.

Should be fun either eay

Last time we played Oregon in the Rose Bowl, they were 5 point favorites.

I think this line will come down to 4 or 5 as well by kickoff.

lol @ Fisher calling out Sark

Urban sure enjoyed his time in Eugene...

In terms of setting college football trends, Oregon wins the day
Dan Wolken, USA TODAY Sports 5:01 p.m. EST January 6, 2015

EUGENE, Ore. — The first thing Oregon players and administrators noticed when they arrived in Seattle for a 2012 game against Washington State was that they had been ripped off.

On billboards all over the city, on buses whizzing by and pretty much everywhere else they looked, "Win The Day" was featured prominently in Washington State's advertisements for the game, which immediately caught the Ducks' attention. Though that phrase is part of Washington State's fight song, it had become Chip Kelly's chosen mantra for the Oregon program and a major part of its identity.

'Win the day' approach brings Oregon within sight of unspoken goal
Oregon officials might have been somewhat amused at seeing a major part of their branding pilfered by Washington State, but they were not exactly surprised. As the Ducks have risen to prominence, no program in the country has been copycatted more egregiously or more often.

"You see a lot of teams simulating our tempo offense, trying to do the flashy uniforms," senior cornerback Troy Hill said. "I guess you could say we're trendsetters out here."

Even before Oregon became the favorite to win its first national title in football, which it will be on Jan. 12 against Ohio State in the College Football Playoff championship game, the Ducks' influence on the sport was far-reaching.

From Oregon's boldness in eschewing traditional uniforms (Maryland has become Under Armour's East Coast imitation, while even traditionalists like Notre Dame are now more experimental) to its cutting-edge football operations building complete with a barber shop (Texas A&M liked the idea so much it put one in their new facility), dozens of other programs have tried to co-opt at least one element of the Ducks' style if not replicate it completely.

"You see people (copy) the fast tempo, the way we practice," linebacker Derrick Malone said. "I heard other programs started practicing in the morning after they found out what we do."

Even "Win the Day," which Oregon has trademarked and serves as the official Twitter handle for Duck Football, is used liberally by other college programs and coaches including material sent out by Indiana football. In November, Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze sent four Tweets including the hashtag #WinTheDay or #WTD.

"We saw pictures of it in the Ole Miss locker room," Craig Pintens, Oregon's senior associate athletics director for marketing and public relations, said. "A lot of their fans have reached out to us and said we stole 'Win the Day' from Hugh Freeze, which we find comical. Occasionally we'll just respond back with a link to the federal trademark. It's kind of flattering to tell you the truth."

Oregon tackles title-game preparation with sense of normalcy
While Oregon now owns exclusive rights to put "Win the Day" on apparel — the trademark was officially filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 20, 2012 — it's a little more difficult to gain proprietary control over other elements of the operation.

When Kelly came to Oregon as offensive coordinator in 2007, his warp-speed offense was largely viewed as an outlier. Though now-prominent coaches such as Gus Malzahn and Art Briles were already dabbling with it at lower levels, it took Oregon winning big before it caught on in major college football.

Now, the concept of up-tempo offense is practically the new standard, with one of the biggest proponents being Ohio State coach Urban Meyer.

"We steal stuff, too. We're equal opportunity (thieves)," Oregon coach Mark Helfrich said. "It's been funny, especially growing up around this area and recruiting against people, they use your style against you in recruiting and then do it on the field, which is kind of weird. That's one of those back-and-forth things that always happens, the evolution of whatever offense, defense, special teams, scheme. People that have one foot in the water of our style or our way, a couple years from now they'll do something else."

Ohio State's offense looks a lot like Oregon's, by design
Meyer, who was working for ESPN at the time during a sabbatical from coaching, was one of only a few people who have gotten an inside look at Oregon's notoriously clandestine operation. Though Helfrich said Monday his staff was "very friendly" when other coaching staffs call asking to share strategy and philosophy, he acknowledged the Ducks' coaches prefer to "gather information more than we send it out."

Oregon's reputation for innovation in all aspects of its operation, from nutrition to training techniques to the actual football plays, contributes to the program's penchant for secrecy. They believe the minute somebody finds out the Ducks are trying something new, other programs around the country will immediately try to copy them.

"There are a lot of things we're doing right now that are a little ahead of what other people are doing," Pintens said. "Some things from a technology standpoint won't be revealed for a couple years. Because of our reputation, we get approached all the time by companies who want to work with us or beta test something, and I think the difference between us and other places is we're willing to try something if we think it's going to make us better."

It's no mystery why other programs are intrigued by how Oregon operates. Over the past six seasons, the Ducks are 70-10 and have never finished lower than 11th in the final poll. This success has happened at a school without a strong local recruiting base or a long history of contending for championships.

And though Oregon's players notice when other schools try to mimic them, the real secret sauce, they say, is an environment they're ingrained into from Day 1 of their freshman year. That remains hard to duplicate.

"Football is a copycat game, even in the NFL," left tackle Jake Fisher said. "When (current Southern Cal coach) Steve Sarkisian was at Washington, they basically copied everything we did offensively and defensively. You can try to duplicate it, but it's the culture and the guys you have on your team that make it what it is. When you don't hone in on the little things like we do and have the mindset we have, it doesn't work out."

It also explains why Oregon handed the keys from Kelly to Helfrich, his little-known, then 39-year old offensive coordinator and didn't change much. Kelly is gone, but "Win The Day" is still plastered all over the Ducks' facilities.

"We really don't give away our secrets but it's not really a secret," Malone said. "It's who we are, it's the players, the coaches, how dedicated we are. It's definitely a complement, but when they're catching up, we're still trying to push the envelope and be innovative and stay ahead."

37. "Cardale Jones, Adolphus Washington and Taylor Decker all returning."
In response to Reply # 0

COLUMBUS, Ohio - A formal media availability ahead of the Jan. 12 national championship game at Ohio State Tuesday brought questions about next year.

Those questions brought unanimous answers from Ohio State's top NFL-eligible underclassmen, all of whom said they plan to return. Offensive lineman Taylor Decker said he sought evaluations through the NFL's underclass advisory committee, and though Decker said the feedback was positive he said he'll be back for his senior season.

Defensive lineman Adolphus Washington said he expects to be back, too.

"I've really given no thought to (the NFL)," Washington said. "I'm just focusing on this (national championship) game."
The NFL's deadline for early entries for this year's draft is Jan. 15. The draft begins April 30.

Quarterback Cardale Jones told reporters Tuesday he "will definitely be back" at Ohio State next season, though the questions presented to Jones were more about Ohio State's crowded quarterback room than the NFL specifically. A shoulder injury in August knocked two-time Big Ten Player of the Year Braxton Miller out for the season, and redshirt freshman J.T. Barrett was good enough in replacing Miller that he finished fifth in Heisman Trophy voting and set the Big Ten single-season record for total touchdowns.

Barrett was hurt in the Nov. 29 regular-season finale, and Jones has beaten Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship Game and Alabama in the Sugar Bowl in his first two starts. A redshirt sophomore on track to graduate in 2015 or early 2016, Jones has two years of eligibility remaining.

As for whether his third career start or the status of the other two quarterbacks on the roster changes his plans, time will tell. At 6'5, 250, Jones would probably be the most coveted pro prospect of Ohio State's quarterbacks with more seasoning. Jones would need an NCAA waiver to play at a different FBS program in 2015; he'd be immediately eligible at the FCS level.

Miller has another year of eligibility because he was hurt before playing his fourth season. He graduated in December, making him eligible to transfer and play immediately for another program if he chooses that route over the NFL or returning to Ohio State.
Miller's father told the Columbus Dispatch last month that his son plans to return to Ohio State, and Ohio State coach Urban Meyer said before the Sugar Bowl that he's talked with Miller and expects him to return to the Buckeyes.

A potential transfer by Miller wouldn't come until after the spring semester, which begins the day of the Ohio State-Oregon game. If Miller wants to go the NFL route, he'll have to apply by the Jan. 15 deadline or apply for eligibility in the July supplemental draft.

"It also reflects their vastly improved athleticism along the line of scrimmage, where all three starters on the defensive line (juniors Arik Armstead, Alex Balducci, and DeForest Buckner) are former four- or five-star recruits and both outside linebacker/defensive end hybrids (senior Tony Washington and junior Christian French, another four-star recruit) have likely futures at the next level.4 The line of scrimmage was a glaring weakness for Oregon in the championship-game loss to Auburn, when the Tigers pounded out 254 yards rushing on 5.1 per carry; none of the four D-line starters in that game (Terrell Turner, Brandon Bair, Zac Clark, and Kenny Rowe) was drafted, and only Bair is on an NFL roster. No other position group on the team has come as far talent-wise in the intervening four years."

NOPE it's pertinent considering a handful of his recruits are still on the field, including the starting quarterback in Monday's game.

every man who has coached for the Buckeyes since 1951 is in or will be in the College Football HoF....no brady hokes, lane kiffins, or mike shulas in our coaching history.

there were only 2 coaches better in CFB during his reign. one is our coach now, and the other is coaching a pro team in Seattle.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/12141880/jim-tressel-bill-snyder-selected-college-football-hall-fame

*106-22 in 10 seasons as coach of Ohio State, including a national championship in 2002, & a 9-1 record vs michigan, and a 6-4 bowl record.

15 seasons at Youngstown State, winning four Division I-AA national titles. He is the only coach to win national championship at both levels of Division I.

all of you who bitched and moaned about our guys getting free tattoos look stupid/petty as fuck in hindsight, considering what happened in CFB in the following years to come.

if i cared enough id name names but my alma mater is back in it's rightful place. that's enough for me.

one down year and we're back to ruling this shit with an iron fist for the next 5 years to come.

Clear some space on the DVR

http://www.sbnation.com/college-football/2015/1/8/7517851/college-football-playoff-national-championship-2015-espn-megacast

Fr the second straight year, ESPN will have a "Megacast" of college football's national championship game, with 12 different ways to watch or listen to this year's game between Ohio State and Oregon. The different telecasts will be broadcast across the ESPN network and online. The 2015 College Football Playoff national championship game will be played at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, at 8:30 p.m. ET on Jan. 12. Here's a look at all of your viewing options, from ESPN.

Traditional broadcast

The traditional game broadcast — with two announcers, sideline reporters and a traditional camera angle — will be on ESPN. Chris Fowler and Kirk Herbstreit, ESPN's typical primetime duo, will be in the booth, with Heather Cox and Tom Rinaldi on the sidelines. However, there are many more options for viewers.

Other viewing options

Film Room debuted last year with coaches providing X's and O's analysis, and it's back this year with a different set of analysts. Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, former Michigan State defensive coordinator and new Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi and new Nebraska coach Mike Riley will be in Bristol to break down the game from multiple camera angles to explain the X's and O's behind the what you'd typically see on television. That broadcast will be on ESPN2.

ESPN has brought together a group of analysts from a number of different sports to create a show called ESPN Voices, which will be broadcast on ESPNU. The panel will consist of Jay Bilas, Aaron Boone, Julie Foudy, Barry Melrose, Mark Schlereth and Michael Wilbon.

In a broadcast similar to Film Room, ESPN will bring former football personnel and current analysts together to discuss the game for its Off the Ball show on ESPNEWS. Bob Wischusen will host the discussion with Kevin Carter, Matt Millen, Jason Sehorn, Matt Stinchcomb and Amani Toomer.

The network will broadcast the Sounds of the Game on ESPN Classic, with 100 microphones providing natural sound over the telecast, including the pregame and halftime shows of both schools' bands.
ESPN Radio's broadcast of the game will feature Mike Tirico, Todd Blackledge, Holly Rowe, Joe Schad and rules expert Bill Lemonnier.
You can also listen to Home Team Radio to get both the Ohio State and Oregon home radio calls on ESPN3, played over the televised footage of the game.

Command Center will be available on ESPN Goal Line, and it will provide commercial-free coverage of the game, with instant replays, split screen action and isolated views of both coaches.

You can get the Spanish Language Call on ESPN Deportes with Eduardo Varela and Pablo Viruega.
SpiderCam on ESPN3 will give fans an above-the-field view of the game.

The Taco Bell Student Section will prominently feature the biggest and craziest fans of each team.
The commercial-free Data Center on ESPN3 will give fans lots of analytics and social media content.

http://www.landgrantholyland.com/2015/1/9/7523051/oregon-darren-carrington-drug-test-suspension-college-football-playoff

According to a report from Comcast SportsNet's Aaron Fentress, starting Oregon redshirt freshman wide receiver Darren Carrington has failed an NCAA administered drug test and will not play in Monday night's College Football Playoff Championship Game. Fentress added that Harrington did not travel with the team in light of the suspension.

The wide receiver, whom per the reporter tested positive for marijuana, was the second leading receiver on the team. Carrington had a monster game against Florida State in the Rose Bowl reeling in seven catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns. The Ducks were already without fellow wide receiver Devon Allen who suffered a knee injury on the opening kickoff against the 'Noles.

On the season, Carrington was second on the team in catches. The Ducks will rely on Dwayne Stanford, Keanon Lowe, Byron Marshall, and Charles Nelson with one less target for the Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Joey Harrington, Darren Carrington - you're telling me they're NOT the same person?

Speculation that because it's a championship game, Carrington could be out either 6 games or all of next season. Seems something similar happened to a Fumble State University player last year.

"To go out and ruin somebody's dreams like that, it feels real good," - Oregon WR Jaison Williams

..granted, we know he's young, but that's no excuse.

he just gave away a great opportunity to truly shine in the national spotlight. hopefully, he'll be more aware and mature about the rest of his opportunities in the future.

In a game where stops are at a premium and you have the chance to potentially go up 2 scores...and that drop essentially gifts OSU a stop and a lot of pressure off them.

Oregon played that forward pitch really well but Williams found a crease, turned sideways and just threw all his weight for the first.

Nice run by Elliot on that TD...terrible angle by the Oregon safety who should have plugged the hole but speed will often do that to any safety.

The only thing has stopped UO are two wr drops. Both teams are executing and OSU is getting their run game going while the drops for UO have halted them.

I always tense up when I see an offensive player in traffic at the end of a big play because they often seem to relax and that's exactly when turnovers happen.

Oregon's started very well, doing a great job of its gap assignments in the run game and getting pressure into Cardale's face...but has really begun to give up chunk plays.

OSU is the exact opposite...was giving up chunk runs between the tackles and huge gaps in the secondary, no pressure on Mariota, but now have really stepped up their game. The front 7 are doing a tremendous job of combining recognition with discipline.

Our football team is generally white bols from the Valley and city kids that USC doesn't bother recruiting (USC has the inner city and OC on lock though things have changed a bit recently).

When Kaelin Clay on Utah dropped the ball on a would be TD right in front of the goal line and totally swung the momentum of a game that Utah would have been up 14-0 on Oregon... you would think those guys would never forget that.

Serious question. They play at one pace, really fast...and Mariotta isn't calling the plays either so those last two passes (niether of which were read option) have to do with him deciding not to run.

As for the defense...their issue the entire game, when stamina as been an issue or not, has been a complete inability to get OSU off the field on third down.

Hard to argue against James Connor too. Everything good for Pitt happened because of him.

The third down conversion beta between the two teams is the difference in the game. Oregon is content sitting back and Cardale has fit the ball in really well.

I don't believe for one minute that Armstead is 290. That whole Oregon DL is tall, long, fast, and very light. You can run on Oregon and teams have had success running on Oregon all season but teams had to abandon the run because the Oregon offense would build a big enough lead so that teams had to abandon the run.

complacency is real for underclassmen, and the QB ego massaging will be interesting (cmon, every great QB has a big ego), but the talent level is ridiculous. hell, depending on how this Jones/Barrett thing plays out, I think my guess of four first rounders in 2016 could be one short.

5 seasons.

The Oregon defensive game plan is for them to play bend but don't break, get some turnovers and let the Oregon offense race out to a two or three score lead. Teams have been able to run on Oregon for years now. Auburn did it in the previous NC game, Ohio State did it in the Rose Bowl and again tonight, Stanford did it as well. Most teams have had success running against Oregon but Oregons offense would force the opposing offense to abandon the run in order to play catch up.

Oregons defense and defensive line is great against the pass. The speed and length of the DL makes it difficult to pass on but they can easily be ran on.

They are not great pass rushers and are too small to effectively play the 3-4 scheme they are in against teams with a powerful o-line and a good gameplan.

Gameplan could have been better but really they need a new scheme or new talent or both.

Still, nothing to shit on, OSU was clearly the more complete team. Oregon had Mariota, a running back, and a running back at wide receiver.

Preposterous.

OSU was the better team, and frankly, they were better coached today as well.

Oregon certainly could have done better but there is nothing to be ashamed of being the 2nd best team in the country.

I am not so sure the talent level is equal either. It might be closer if Oregon had Ikpre-Olumu and Carrington on hand but even still, OSU is as fast as Oregon but bigger and stronger in the trenches...which, in my humble opinion, is where the proverbial rubber meets the road.

And yes, Meyer had his team much better prepared and had a much better gameplan.

Oregon has been pulling in a lot of highly rated kids.

OSU probably had more talent on their defense but what Oregon lacked in talent they made up for in experience. Oregon had a lot of upper classmen playing tonight compared to a very young OSU team.

To win by 2+ scores with a -4 turnover differential is mightily impressive (and yeh, Oregon dropped 2 huge passes but OSU more then gave those back w the bad turnovers). To do it with your third string quarterback (and huge respect to Cardale...just made pretty much every play when it needed to be made) and a team full of frosh and soph...just incredible impressive. Ezekiel Elliot is a monster, Urban Meyer is a monster program builder and coach. The game was really summed up by the rush yard and third down conversion betas between the two teams. Respect to OSU, just clearly better.

Football is a simple game. The team that wins the line of scrimmage almost always wins the game.

Oregon is a hell of a team but they need a bigger D-line. Especially if they intend to try and play this weak ass 3-4.

the difference between HIS passes and mariotta's was crazy. he was zooming shit, pinpoint (including 'with anticipation') all over the field. marriotta looked like everything was a touch pass, to the point i'm questioning his arm strength. he can make the throws, but maybe its just the contract w/ jones.

dude's arm live as hell. plus he don't need to have his feet planted to throw with accuracy. not to mention he outrunning DE's, juking CB's, and trucking noseguards. sign him up now.

i haven't been following meyer or cfb this year enough to know whether he be shitting on dude or not. if he is, its a damn shame.

that game last night looked even better than cam's (when he was in college and, from one snap to the next, even right now).

that doesn't take away from cam. he's a beast. and with a good OC and at least decent weapons he can do work. but he has his moments - whether its a lapse in concentration or mechanics or effects of injuries or what have you - where the ball don't go where he wants it.

i've also seen him throw laser-beam-a-gnat-on-his-ass type throws into impossibly small windows so i'm not questioning cam's throwing ability at all... it just seemed that jones last night was REALLY good on repetitive accuracy. he put the ball where it needed to go on damn near every throw he made.

he was hitting receivers 20 yards away with balls that jumped right into their hands as they came out of breaks. and if it wasn't some one night anomaly cinderella type shit (i hadn't watched his other 2 starts), it bodes well for his nfl future.

assuming all the mental shit checks out and he has the ethic to work and blah blah blah.

b) is moot because i made the disclaimer at the outset that i was using an absurdly small sample set (1 game).

still, i saw enough to make some very basic determinations:
- CJ has a cannon.
- he had repetitive accuracy.
- made throws on the move and was able to put the ball on a spot without having his feet/platform perfect.
- good running ability and athleticism as well as pocket presence. made throws with anticipation on breaking routes and fit ball within tight spaces in coverage when he needed to.
- was also able to put touch and loft on balls when the route or coverage or situation called upon it

and he did most of that better than MM in that game.

>c) I'm not tying to start shit, just weird because Meyer
>generally praises his QB a lot....seems like he dodges
>questions about Cardale's ability all the time
>
>I've seen him openly avoid talking about dude's talent
>3 times, when asked DIRECTLY about it

again, can't call it on that one. haven't seen/heard it. meyer is in a tight spot if this was his #3, though, regarding impacts on the rest of the squadron. if he hypes CJ too much and he bounces for the league and then brax xfers, now he only has 1 qb to which to hitch their 2016 wagon.

peace & blessings,

x.

That's why Oregon was always having trouble with SC and stanford.

Only reason why Oregon rushed ahead of SC was due to sanctions and stanford didn't have the players on the OL and defense to slow Oregon like years past.

Is due to the sanctions.

SC beat Oregon three years ago in Eugene. When was the last time UCLA beat Oregon? 2007? I think UCLA has a grand total of 2 wins over Oregon in the last 15 years. That would be two wins in the entire 21st century.

SU UO

2013/11/07 26 - 20 L
2012/11/17 17 - 14 L OT
2011/11/12 30 - 53 W

2009/11/07 51 - 42 L
2008/11/08 28 - 35 W
2007/09/22 31 - 55 W
2006/09/02 10 - 48 W
2005/10/01 20 - 44 W
2004/10/23 13 - 16 W
2003/10/25 0 - 35 W
2002/11/02 14 - 41 W

Over the last 13 years, UO is 10-3 against Stanford. Since Chip took over, we're 3-3. And in those 6 games we've outscored them by 55 points. So, yeah, Stanford got in the way in 2012 and 2013, but we got in their way in 2010 and 2011. Payback is a bitch, and you can't beat a good team every single year.

Not physical to what? Beat the 2009 tOSU team that won the Rose Bowl? Beat the 2010 Auburn team that won the championship? Beat the 2011 LSU team that played for a national championship? Those are, aside from Stanford, the only "Big Boy" teams that Oregon has lost to in the last 5 years, until tonight. Note that that last one was in 2011.

You know why Oregon lost to those teams? Because those teams were REALLY FUCKING GOOD. So, yeah, Oregon doesn't have the fast beef on the lines to stuff Elliot or to spring Royce against tOSU - but most teams don't. And part of that is a recruiting disadvantage of being in a college town in a small state tucked away in the corner, opposite of Big Boy country.

But I don't think there's a ton of shame in losing to those teams. Now, Arizona last year, that's a different story. But to say that Oregon loses because they CHOOSE to play a certain way is patently false, and doing the best with the recruits they can get has won them more games than any other team in the country in the last 5 years.

"To go out and ruin somebody's dreams like that, it feels real good," - Oregon WR Jaison Williams

Of the year where ND and Brady Quinn got lined up against LSU in the Sugar Bowl and JaMarcus Russell. Most folks showed up to gush over Quinn in his last college game before going pro. And then Russell showed up making jackass strong arm throws downfield to Bowe and Lafell. Meanwhile, Quinn got bull rushed and looked mighty pedestrian. And of course Cleveland still drafted him because Cleveland. And big rusty Russell got overdrafted to the Oakland dumpster fire, held out, never got coached up, and then didn't put in the work outside of working his way to fatness and being outta the league.

Slanted recap aside, that big kid going from 3rd string to balling in January is just special. The team that folks wanted out of the top 4 is now the national champ. Makes sense. Introduce a month with no games into a bunch of 20-year old dudes' football season and it is borderline crazy to pretend to know what's gonna happen. The break looks to benefit the better coaches with more 'straight-forward' gameplans based on raw physicality.

I'm not sure if Oregon could've done much better with their whole team but I can't imagine it would've hurt. Mariota looked like a lot of the bad things people say about him tho. Missed throws, not as athletic as folks say, and a guy who needs the play to win before he can. The good decision-making was there enough but still...he's gonna have to combine his way out of 'falling'.

I'd like for him to play the entire season as a starter..but there's no guarantee he'd be the starter..

doesn't he have to declare like soon??

man..

I honestly think the fact he might not start at Ohio state should be enough to go to the league as a Developmental type QB..learn..play in the preaseason....

maybe not a first round pick...but if he goes to the combine and makes all the throws...

people keep saying Jamarcus Russell....

he could be a friggin Dante Cullpepper too.... a big chunker who can run..

there's a hell of a lot of potential there...

and maintained the relatively murky selection process. it may have actually progressed in it's murkiness. hell, most people were bitching about OSU getting in. imagine if they had lost convincingly to bama?

better question IMO, is how many new fans of cfb were gained from the new format? you know all those people who claimed they would never watch unless a playoff was added...do you think they suddenly became cfb fans this year?

Most of the people advocating for a playoff in previous years were college football fans.

a lot of non-cfb fans would hate on the sport because there wasn't a playoff. not realizing that even w/a playoff they still wouldn't get it.

I've actually enjoyed some of his analyses lately, though.

as an actual game announcer...him and mowins are dreadful.

regardless, i wouldn't extrapolate galloway's opinion unto the rest of the fan base.

the 2nd best team in the country lost to the best team in the country. no shame in that.

Too bad Carrington/Pharoah/Allen weren't healthy ..wanted to square up against your offense at full strength.

byron marshall and thomas tyner are studs tho.

fwiw, i agree that last touchdown by Meyer was unnecessary but that's just his M.O.

the days of graceful knee taking ended when the Senator was ousted.

random thoughts

- the o-line. Bud Foster exposed them in that VT loss. Ed Warriner went right to work and turned them into the road graders they are today. and all 4 are coming back. best position coach in all of CFB. hands down.

almost the entire OL from last year is starting on an NFL roster.

extremely glad Urban was able to retain him

- how big will OC Tom Herman's departure be for us? Tim Beck? ehhh..but in Urban I trust.

- love Vrabel, but Larry Johnson is the fucking man. He single handedly turned this d-line from good to great, all while missing noah spence due to drug related issues (we have those too Oregon)

- Luke Fickell. I will never say anything bad about you again (until September....)

- Zeke wasnt even 100 percent healthy this season. Left wrist was killing him all season and has surgery set for thursday.

still soaking it all in...ill prob have more to say after i rewatch the game tonight

Mariota is crap, fluke victory versus FSU got Ducks fans hype, but anyone who follows Pac12 football knew Oregon can't win the big one, ask Stanford!

I ain't even really mad about it. SORT of a surprise, in that it gave the ball back and drew things out when you'd think tOSU would just wanna get on with the trophy ceremony and get to celebrating. But I think it bothered the Oregon players less than it might've brought happiness to the dude that scored the TD (Elliot?) - so, I see it as more upside than downside, since losing less doesn't make you any less of a loser.

I also wonder if part of that was Urb going for insurance style points for next year. Winning may have been enough to get them the benefit of the doubt in case they drop a game next year, but winning even more convincingly could be the difference between the playoffs and a shit bowl next year. So, again, I get it. I'm not sure Helfrich would've done it, but I ain't mad at it at all.

Oh and all the FSU fans and the Stanford fans and ESPECIALLY the Washington fans who are talking shit - shit's just sad. See you next year, Huskies - I'll bring a beer for every year in a row the Ducks have beaten you by at least 17 points. It'll be extra easy, just gotta buy a 12-pack!

"To go out and ruin somebody's dreams like that, it feels real good," - Oregon WR Jaison Williams
