In no order outside of AJ Green being number 1...

AJ Green
Antonio Brown
Jordy Nelson
Julio Jones
Demaryius Thomas

Dez Bryant (very good but can give you 0 production some weeks)
Calvin Johnson (just had a down year due to injury but hey...*shrugs*
Odell Beckham Jr (will be top 5 maybe next year, definitely the year after)

I saw a dude rocking a Cowboys Santa hat at the mall today.

That tells me all I need to know about Cowboy fans.

And since when was being Top 8 in the league a bad thing?

We're splitting hairs here

I'm a Cowboy fan, so of course I'm a fan of Dez. Don't really care if he's in your top 8, top 10, or top 50. I was directly addressing your microwave popcorn analysis. If you believe that, then you can't possibly watch whole games. That simple. Even when he's not getting targets, he's blocking his ass off on run plays and drawing so much attention that Cole and Terrance are getting wide the fuck open. Oh, and all a dude rockin a Cowboys Santa hat tells you is that some people like to wear dumb hats. Saw the same Santa hat Friday at Walmart...except it was a Broncos one...means absolutely nothing, but I'm sure you thought it would be slick to randomly throw that into a football convo.

Ok.

LOL @ at popcorn analysis. I got Dez in the top 8 and you're mad that I said he puts up 0 production some weeks.

That's just the truth. I don't claim to watch every Cowboys game but I have seen games where he is a non-factor.

I know he blocks...I know he draws attention for other WR as a number one should.

I didn't say he was bad...I nitpicked him out of the top fucking 5. I'm sure we could do that with a lot of them.

Calvin has been number 1 the past few years.

But I believe we're at the turning point where AJ is going to take the top spot.

And again, AJ is younger so if I'm picking WRs today I'm taking him.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Ruining lives. That and folks generally not watching games. It is impressive to me that Antonio Brown has been open vs everybody for two straight seasons to the tune of unreal stats of all kinds and he's somehow not easily high on everyone's wr list. 129 catches. 1698 yards. 13 tds. And he isn't Welkering his way up on catches by just running the tecmo bowl jerry rice 'gotcha bitch slant' over and over with the misdirection quick corner out. He does everything. And he doesn't have the cheat code of being able to just out-big folks when the funk hits the fan. He has to run routes to get open. And he has to get openish for Ben to throw him most of the passes he gets. And he does it even when the whole planet knows he's getting the ball all game long.

Dez is as good as it gets in 1 on 1s. It shows even more now that Dallas has a whole offense and an elite line. I call him a terrorist to all cbs. He murders folks in 1 on 1s just about every week. Size and 'at least enough speed' combo masterpiece. 'Body control'. Jump ball cheat code. He's like super Boldin. He's an evil brute force on the edge almost as much as...

Megatron. I get that he's hurt a lot but the whole Detroit offense is uplifted dramatically when he's on the field. And he beats bracket coverage regularly. It's almost unfair when he isn't half-crippled.

Beckham Jr. had 90+ catches, over 1200 yards, and double digit tds. That's this year. He missed the first month of the season with a wonky hammy. And unlike the last guy to show up and blow up with a less than full slate of games, isn't showing up late to team activities after partying with Johnny after missing 10 games on suspension after being supplementally drafted after...c'mon! Josh Gordon!? Bwahaha! And ODB has the outrageous change of direction without slowing down ability. And a qb all too willing to get the ball to him. The lazy 'safety over the top' coverage plan ain't shit to him. He runs routes too. Add in the 'fuck yo coverage' catches and it is a wrap. If he stays healthy, folks will see...this ain't a Braylon Edwards or Bernard Berrian accidental good season.

After that...I struggle with DT vs Julio. They are similar in that they can get open fast as hell on grope coverage. And any catch could be a td. Neither one is above the occasional 'hey man' drop and limpin around. Folks forget that DT basically didn't exist because of injuries his first two years. But they are special when healthy. And maybe racism is making me not show proper love to a dude I refer to as 'that damn Jordy' who is 'always open', sneaky fast, good for making catches in traffic, etc. These three are similar to me. I'll say DT today but it could be any of them depending on criteria.

I want to like AJ Green more than I do, but bad Andy kills him off so bad sometimes that he doesn't have the liberty of the occasional drop or not being open. And real talk, Gruden sucked sometimes too with the 'look ma, AJ is an obvious decoy this week' gameplans. At least Hue Jax is getting the man the ball. It doesn't help AJ that Sanu impersonated him for a month and got by. The other guys I have 'above' him are irreplaceable. Yeah, I saw Golden Tate but wasn't Calvin. That was him playing well and some coaching.

I keep on seeing TY Hilton open down the field but hell..so is OG DJax. I'm interested to see TY when he has the keys to the wr group and indy gets even a pretend good run game again.

the kid is phenomenal, but slooooow down. Let him play for a minute. I remember some years back, there was a post made like "_________ is already better than:" then it had a list of WR the OP felt this guy had surpassed. Some of the names were crazy as fuck, like T.O., Boldin, and some more really fucking good and proven receivers. Know who the guy they were hypin was? Mario Manningham, lol. He was had a good stretch of games and all of a sudden he was H.O.F. bound.

As far as Manningham is concerned, he was just an Elite Manning creation.

People act like that's the only way a WR can be 'elite' now..aka if you're big and fast AND you can win jump balls, folks are dying to overrate you. And I keep seeing big dudes running down the field trying to get deep shots thrown their way...all Randy all the time.

Sleep if you want, but Attack of the Super Welkahs is real. Welker proved that if you understand coverages and get the trust of QBs, you can catch a bunch of passes and move chains in the NFL without great tangible 'physical talent' or size. Now guys who are at least a little bigger but still not huge are doing it. And they are FAR more talented. They are running a more full route tree and murdering defenses all around with speed, unreal change of direction, ball skills (HUH), and route accuracy variety. Aka Antonio Brown, Sanders, and OBJ/ODB/Beckham. And to a lesser extent: Wallace and Garcon. And yes, Jeremy Mac-daddy, young scrappy. Torrey Smith is like bizarro Welker in that he's almost all long ball.

Meanwhile, AJ Green and Megatron keep taking on a gang of contact every week trying to win jump balls and 'catch in traffic'. And look at how the injuries are mounting for them as folks hit lower and lower every year. And look at how 'look ma, no hands' Roddy and Big Rusty Andre are starting to fare...

I wouldn't put Brown and the other guys you mentioned in the same micro-box as Welker. He's truly undersized and the rest of those guys are In the normal to optimum size for a WR, with Dez being exactly what you want in a do-it-all WR.

But I'm right there when it comes to the tall cats and that's a good point about the injuries. I tend to wonder how effective they would be if they weren't playing under these basketball rules of contact.

Agreed...especially on the Dez thing. I cussed at the TV for 10 minutes when the Texans took Kareem Jackson instead of him.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_NFL_draft

But I think people saw Welker's success and thought "what if we did some of the same things the Pats did with Welker? BUT we'll do it with more talented guys who are bigger than him but not as big as all of our fake Randy Moss guys who aren't even kinda Randy Moss?". It seems like Steve Smith was viewed as an anomaly..like teams said 'who else is that mad and mean about being little? And who wants to deal with that? Nevermind..let's draft mo' fake Randies!'. So that's why I cite Welkah.

I ride 'my' fake Randy Moss agenda similar to the way that I argue that cats from 6'4" to 6'9" trying to be 'fake Jordan' without the talent, drive, or surrounding circumstances ruined several NBA franchises during the 90s and early 2000s. Things recovered when teams moved on from that plan and started trying to get good in other ways (Webber-ish big and pieces, bring Shaq out of the paint teams, etc). The Pistons title run years with Chauncey along with the Spurs having that 4 title in 9 year period PROBABLY changed the course of basketball history. That and taking away hand-checks. Zone? Eh..maybe I'm selling it short, but blatant and legal zone isn't that far off from the Laker 87 'this is pretty much a zone but don't call us for illegal defense again y'all' zone.

Is there anyone from the Calvin/AJ/Demaryious/Julio group that you dont think runs sharp routes?

Or are you downing the strategy of trying to acquire big receivers as default?

That. I'm downing the idea that every big and 'fast' guy has a fair shot at having Randy Moss impact on any offense. Some solid players get put out of the league or never really get coached up because they show up as tall and fast guys but aren't best days Randy in terms of being TD machines who are basically impossible to stop for a whole game without certain personnel and plans. Mawse was unreal fast period. For his size, he was Create-A-WR 'no way that's real' fast...especially back then.

As for the routes, I like most of those guys with Julio being the only one I'd hate on openly for routes, but most of the things they have him doing are 'easy' routes. He's so outrageously good after the catch that it kinda doesn't matter. Besides that, I think OCs can be lazy about coaching and playcalls with their big guy WRs sometimes. With the 6-footish and under guys, there's a little more obvious need to call things to help 'get them open' via the play design instead of counting on the WR to 'big and fast' his way to being open.

Haha...I thought of him too in the reply above. If anything, he's the grand-daddy. It is very possible that the Pats saw SSS and thought they could find a little guy who was less mad (and less talented) and have him eat up 6-yard passes all game long with the occasional long shot or counter route to keep folks honest on how they cover him. I'm still impressed with how SSS gets open downfield at his age. Imagine if SSS had a chunk of his career with someone other than Jake and his non-Cam replacements. And it ain't like Cam is the master of accuracy either.

Right now:

1. Antonio Brown - the best all round WR in the NFL this past season and he's been showing his talent for a couple of years

2. Megatron - when he has been on this season he has shown there is no-one else in his class

3. Dez - He's not only become a no 1 receiver but Dallas's receiving security blanket for Romo

4. Jordy Nelson - pretty much unstoppable on the slants and the chemistry he has with Rodgers.

5. Demaryius Thomas - but a down year for him. Difficult to know if he is slipping or if its Manning.

Honourable mention: Julio Jones, AJ Green great talents but i'd choose the above five just before them.

also

Julian Edelman (who sat the last two games of the season but still had 92 receptions and 972 receiving yards and clearly would have made the 100 receptions/1000 receiving yards had he not been rested). Edelman has shown he's more than a slot receiver, he can do it on the outside, has reliable hands, hella tough and is one of the best in the league at returning punts. He has been close to a number one option the last two years in New England.

>see nobody's even thought about Fitzgerald

Isn't it time to say that Larry has fallen off at least some? I love the guy and called him the best playing out loud with cussing for years. Routes, hands, open a lot for a guy who 'wasn't fast', physical. He was also regularly getting chunk yardage plays. I remember seeing him at Pitt via random channel-flipping and/or highlight-watching on Saturdays and thought 'that dude is gonna be a problem on Sundays'. Then, once Warner showed up, I was in support fo sho! AKA I have a Larry jersey. But really tho...since then, his catch % has dropped something terrible. And it isn't all because of QB play even if the drop from Sweet Sweet Kurt Warner to *anyone they've had since* at QB is so real. But I've seen him drop passes. He 'looks slower'. And he's constantly nursing an injury of some kind. And the chunk yardage is a 2x a season type of thing. Dez is pretty much my guy for The Larry Experience now.

And Big Rusty Andre? Maaaaaan, don't even start me. He's been playing half-hurt for years. I watched him play without cutting for at least one full season. Plus, he has been clocked out mentally at least a little bit too. When he makes a grown man catch with his hands and not Jacoby-style (you know what I mean...arms, chest, having to fall to make sure he doesn't drop it), I'm surprised. I've called him a less physical TO without the press conference one-liners for years. When he cussed out Schaub on the sideline and left the game early, I thought 'the secret' was out but no...folks defended HIM.

And he was also Bowe-like as it relates to gobbling up empty/cheap stats vs drop zones in games where the Texans were usually hopelessly behind after a few 3 and outs and their defense being terrible. I've watched him drop 3rd and short tecmo bowl slants early in games for years and it pissed me off beyond words to listen to folks compare him to Larry and Calvin with straight faces when the Texans started winning a little bit more than before a couple years ago. And now he just doesn't get open as much (cuz he's older, slower, less physical, and somewhat clearly less interested). AND he fumbles in traffic a lot for a guy who isn't exactly a YAC master. He gave his best pro years to a hapless new franchise and didn't get the love he deserved when he was more high end, but I ain't bestowing anything close to a top 5 WR to him now.

Jimaveli: I'm from Houston.

I enjoyed re-reading how I got jumped on for posting the same Top 8 as everyone else.

Gotta love OKP.

My list would slightly change after this year...

Antonio is def #1
And ODB is undeniable top 5
Julio is still there

Hopkins has a great year
Marshall also had a great year

AJ and Calvin had good years and are still up there

And then you have Dez and Jordy missed all/a lot of time and their absent was felt to the point they are still up there.

Oh yea...and Fitz had a great year. Happy to see him don't what he's doing.

and is showing and proving in the playoffs while all those other dudes are sitting at home watching.

People in here worship at the throne of "Megatron" but the next time he has a big game in the postseason will be his first.

It's at the point where people should be asking where he stands all-time.

And at this point he is probably higher than pretty much everyone named in this post.

And I agree with Calvin. He's an unbelievable talent and had some great years. But now he's talking about retiring and overall he may not end that high on an all-time list.
