"Official 49ers Offseason Post"

So, our shit is officially "put a fork in" status. An end to a moribund season and disappointing end to a promising, but ultimately unfulfilling, era.

It's funny, I'm not even that upset or "hurt" at this point, because when we fucked up to the Giants, I knew that opportunities like that won't continue to come our way and that we blew a BIG ONE. That was our best team of the three, plus we caught a league that was heavily sleeping on us by surprise. Our defense was so damn lights out that year.

Injuries to our defense and other teams catching up to simplistic/predictable offensive strategies eventually caught up to us.

truthiswhen, reality, whatever name he's using needs to reckon with the fact that KAEPERNICK NEEDS TO STEP UP MAJORLY.

Something is not right with his head. Ever on a quest for personal development and self improvement, I think he needs to make peace with his birth mother. You never know how certain things wear on someone's psyche and affects other things we don't even think about. But BEYOND THAT, we need to fix our offense.

Now granted, Gore and Hyde went down, otherwise we probably win that game, but someone who utilizes the talents of our team the best, rather than forcing them to submit to a system. I say Jed York gets Norv Turner from Minnesota to be our OC. If HE can't make Kaap more effective, then put a fork in him. The contract he signed this year is very team friendly, so it wouldn't kill us if we had to part ways, and it would in many ways symbolize a break with the Harbaugh era, since he pushed for the draft pick and ultimately made the "permanent" QB decision. Not that I want him to be gone and don't like dude, but he's GOT to get better. This team has LOADS more offensive talent than when Harbaugh got there, it needs to be maximized while our defense is till top 10, and when healthy, top 3.

One of my boys suggested Holmgren, which I wouldn't be mad at at all. Now it's early, but the one good thing about us being out fast is that certain moves can be made sooner than later. Don't have much more to offer at this point beyond the drum I've been beating for years on end, but at least there's a place for such thoughts to reside.

http://bleacherreport.com/tb/dfAAY?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=newsletter&utm_campaign=san-francisco-49ers

Former San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Mike Holmgren is highly interested in becoming the 49ers’ next head coach, according to a source who spoke with Holmgren.

Whether or not that means anything remains to be seen. The job isn’t open (yet). It’s unknown whether Jed York and Trent Baalke would look toward Holmgren, who has 17 seasons of NFL head coaching experience but would be 67 years old at the start of next season. Rumors are swirling (they tend to have the same tendencies as the winds at Candlestick Park) that the 49ers could trade or fire Jim Harbaugh after this season. Holmgren isn’t often named as a likely candidate to replace him, but maybe he should be mentioned alongside favorites like Jim Tomsula and Vic Fangio.

He’s a “big name” who still resonates with many 49ers fans

Jed York is in for the kind of backlash he and his family have never before experienced once they finally pull the plug on Harbaugh, even if the 49ers lose out and finish 7-9. The only way to pacify some of those fans would be to fight star power with star power, i.e. by hiring a famous coach. Like Jon Gruden, Holmgren has one Super Bowl win but hasn’t coached since 2008. In a lot of other markets he might be seen as a retread, but there were countless calls to radio shows between 2009 and Harbaugh’s hiring in which dissatisfied fans called for the 49ers to hire Holmgren. He wouldn’t satisfy everyone, but his name is one that would engender more patience than a lot of others.

It would mark a return to the 49ers’ roots

Holmgren played quarterback at Lincoln High in San Francisco, and after his playing days he served as an assistant at Lincoln, two other local high schools and San Francisco State before heading to BYU in 1982. He was the 49ers’ quarterbacks coach from 1986-88. San Francisco led the NFL in points and yards in 1989, his first season as offensive coordinator. More than any other branch of the Bill Walsh coaching tree, Holmgren was seen as the one who got away.

Throughout the Yorks’ stewardship, the 49ers have looked like an organization hoping to mimic other successful franchises. The 49ers revolutionized offensive football in the 1980s, but the 49ers of the 2000s have taken pages from defensive teams like the Baltimore Ravens (Mike Nolan, Mike Singletary), Chicago Bears (Singletary, Harbaugh) and New York Giants (Baalke is a disciple of Bill Parcells).

There’s a nice museum at Levi’s Stadium, but for a long time there’s been a strange distance between the current 49ers and their iconic figures, like Joe Montana, Jerry Rice, Steve Young and several others. If the 49ers brought in Holmgren, and that led to a championship reunion of sorts with several beloved former players, the early stages of Harbaugh backlash would be quieted even more, and would dissipate completely if the 49ers started experiencing some 1989-esque success.

Holmgren is a quarterbacks coach

The 49ers are at a crossroads with Colin Kaepernick, and jettisoning Harbaugh would insert even more chaos into the situation. Trent Dilfer recently mentioned why Holmgren would be perfect.

“He needs a coach that will come in there, I wish Mike Holmgren was still in the NFL. He needs a Mike Holmgren that can come in and tell him how good he can be. And listen, kid, I got the tools to make you good again.”

Laugh if you want, but Dilfer and Jed are bros. It could be a coincidence that he mentioned Holmgren’s name on a radio show, but you never know with the Yorks. You just never know.

Holmgren will apparently do whatever it takes to coach again

The biggest question — other than money — when it comes to any coaching candidate, is how he’d get along with Baalke. Holmgren has years of executive experience, and if he wants the power to choose his own roster … York will probably say something that sounds like, “Don’t call us, we’ll call you.” Or, “Why don’t you take a tour of Levi’s Stadium. It’ll only cost you $25.”

Holmgren’s resume as a general manager is (hold on, I’m searching for a diplomatic way to put this …) spotty. Yep, it’s spotty.

He was fired by the Seahawks in 2002 (but remained the team’s head coach for several more years). His run in Cleveland (2010-12) was forgettable, and that’s being very, very kind. But Holmgren wants to get back into coaching … badly. How badly?

Holmgren will coach the American Team in the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl, the players association announced Monday. Mike Martz, the former Rams coach, will head the National Team.

The game will be played Jan. 17 at StudHub Center on the California State University Dominguez Hills campus.

Coaching against Mike Martz in some college all-star game most of us have never heard of, at a facility that Seahawks.com couldn’t even spell correctly, tells us all we need to know about Holmgren’s hunger to wear a headset and patrol the sidelines.

***

Don’t get this story confused with something like, “Holmgren Should Be The Next Coach Of The 49ers: My Column.” Again, all I know is that Holmgren is interested in the gig. It doesn’t mean the 49ers are into Holmgren, but his name could be one to follow if/when the team parts ways with Harbaugh.

Did you make these same concessions for Alex or did you just become more analytical when Kaep started taking snaps?

Fanboying blindly is unbecoming.

The issues that existed with Alex still exist mostly with kap..that much is true. The thing with Alex was we couldn't tell if it were coaching or his lack of big play making ability that was holding us up. I didn't assume either way, but when I saw kaps big play ability (on the run AND through the air) I was intrigued enough to want him to be full time starter. The link between Alex and kap is the coaching staff which makes them look very much at fault.

Although, Alex got the same issues in kc. But that's neither here nor there

Alex's performance in the 2011 playoffs v. the Saints and the two scores v. the Giants showed to me that while he would likely never be on par with Rodgers, Brady, Manning, Brees, he COULD make big plays when needed. Gore was GASHING the Giants defense, but inexplicably they went away from it. My friend, a Giants season ticket holder even admitted that if we had kept running it, we'd have won.

People were so quick to jump on the "it's Alex Smith, that's the problem," wagon that the true problems were masked. And even when Kaep's unlikely ascension took place, because he was going more off of instinct than experience, they didn't have time to put their fuckery into his scheming. It's only now, after more and more years in the system that the flaws of it are being exposed, through his shortcomings. I think Alex actually ran the system better, but it limits both of their effectiveness with how they misuse the running game.

>Although, Alex got the same issues in kc. But that's neither

agreed, different topic.

I place approximately 0% of the blame on Kaep for the game on Sunday. The offensive-line was as porous as its ever been this season. Receivers were dropping passes. By the third/fourth quarter, we were trotting out our third-string RB and our fourth street tight end, players I didn't even know were on the roster. It was a war of attrition that Seattle won off of injuries on the offense and defense and the benefit of a really shitty call.

All that said, Kaep's hand hasn't been empty for the entire season. Yes, Crabtree isn't playing likes it's a contract year and Vernon looks like a clown for holding out during pre-season. But Boldin has been a boss, and to Kaep's credit, he gets him the ball. Gore and Hyde have both done been solid, if under-used. There's nothing wrong with Stevie Johnson and Lloyd, but they haven't been getting the ball. Most of that's on the coaching staff and the stagnant offense, but it's also on Kaep for not getting it to them when he can/should. And he still has the same bad habit that he's had since last season: too often he throws dangerous passes that absolutely count on the athleticism of the WRs to pull off miracle catches.

So yeah, the deck's been stacked against Kaep most of the season. The coaching on offense looks inept, the o-line is raggedy, and some key play-makers are under-performing. But he shoulders at least part of the blame as well.

I'm not saying dump him. I'm not saying bench him. I'm not even saying bring in another QB to have a competition during preseason. But he's still got some issues that he really needs to work out if we're gonna turn the corner. And someone, be it Harbaugh or whoever they bring in if Harbaugh leaves, needs to figure it out.

PROBLEMS

-A lot of those sacks are on him. He leaves clean pockets, holds the ball way too long, and refuses to throw the ball out of bounds. Compare him to Russell Wilson playing with arguably a worse O-line.

-He is not seeing open guys. His vision is extremely concerning.

-His accuracy has dropped for some reason. He is missing guys by ten feet at times. His first INT to Sherman in the Thanksgiving game was horrible. There are plenty of throws when as soon as he lets it go you know he's not connecting with his target.

-His running instincts are off. He forgoes opportunities to pick up first downs and sometimes runs when there's nothing there. You can see him second guess himself.

-The time clock management--which probably cost us the Super Bowl--is still awful.

REASONS TO BE OPTIMISTIC

-We know he is talented. We know he can make these throws. We know he has a good 3-4 years of elite speed left. He's just mentally shook right now.

-He is extremely durable. Sacked more than anybody this year and seems very healthy. Underrated quality.

-Our play design has gotten really stale. Very predictable routes and no danger of anybody going deep. You can see safetys and CBs just sitting and anticipating routes. That's on Harbaugh/Roman and not Kap.

-We now see how essential Vernon Davis was to this offense. He really was the piece that made it work. An excellent run blocker who can also torch you on a deep post. But this year he's is just terrible in all phases.

-He wants to win. You can tell he wants to win bad and will do what it takes in the off-seasons to improve his game.

Their play calling system has a ton to do with it. Roman relays his play call to harbaugh who then approves it and passes it to kap. That's why the play comes in so late and in turn they get to the line of scrimmage late, they can never be tricky with the snap count so teams front 7 always has the jump on our offensive line, etc..

Some of the dumbest shit I've heard. Roman and kap don't even communicate during offensive possessions. Jim is their liaison so to speak.

The fact that this shit is still unfixed three years later is on the coaches. All they seem to have changed is add a "hurry, hurry" cadence for him. And, yeah, their playcalling system is retarded. Didn't we have this same fucking problem with Jimmy Raye?

But Kap is still really poor at getting guys to the line quickly. The lack of pace and urgency on drives in the 4th quarter (when, this year, they are almost always behind) is so frustrating. Some of that has to be on #7.

I will that I can never really hate Vernon after "The Catch #3." And even though he's been awful this season outside of the Dallas game, I think he can still have some sort of value to the team. He just won't get paid as much as he'd like.

Sounds like there's only going to be money for one of these guys. I'd say Cox. Culliver is solid but seems limited after his injury--the future upside is gone.

Shocking number of drops this year. Somebody will pay him.

Really up to the new coach/OC to decide if he fits their system as a backup. I'm fine with him.

It's not like we're in need of a rebuild or a complete restructuring. I'm wary of anyone who's gonna come in try to switch things up too much to prove his own genius.

To me, unless they are convinced one of these young offensive guys (Gase, K. Shanahan, Hamilton) truly is the next Bill Walsh I don't see how you do better than Fangio.

For all the credit Harbaugh gets, it's Fangio's D that became elite immediately in 2011 and was the foundation of the team for all four years. Especially this year when it was missing top talents. And, there's much more money invested in offensive talent.

Gotta also think Fangio returning makes Justin Smith and possibly Gore more likely to come back.

Yeah, not a fan of Fangio leaving. I don't think the players are either.

i think he interviewed once.

the reports this morning said fangio basically said make me the HC, and if not, it better be mike shanahan (LOL)

>Yeah, not a fan of Fangio leaving. I don't think the players
>are either.

yeah i think bowman and a couple others came out publicly and said they wanted vic.

the more i think about it, it seems like this might've been planned by jed/baalks for a long, long time. i remember matt maiacco a year ago, amidst the harbaugh contract extension stuff, said that ownership thought highly of tomsula as a successor. kinda funny that tomsula is the only guy who DIDN'T have an official interview announced.

and yeah, i do believe ownership/baalke planted those locker-room-hates harbaugh stories to advance their plot.

while i love what tomsula's done as a position coach, i can't help but think they hired the candidate who's the most likely to be compliant, thereby the least likely to hurt jed's feelings.

this whole part makes a lot of sense

as does this, if we take the part above as true

you might have been the one to point this out, but since eddie fired walsh numerous times, with policy as the peacemaker, baalke or maathe should have been the one to maintain harmony between harbaugh and jed. i like tomsula, but i'd have preferred to maintain our defensive stability first and foremost with fangio.

it will be really interesting to hear from the first 49er to bolt in free agency to speak on what really went on this past year.

another point: do you think management held against Harbaugh him making the QB move and eventually getting Alex traded away? And for that matter, the players, on how it all went down? I know they managed to be one of the top teams in the league a season and a half beyond it, but you never know how those things creep in when things get bad.

In response to Reply # 36

Alex has been... Alex in KC.

Sounds like there was a lot more tension over how poorly young offensive players got developed in the Harbaugh regime. Vance McDonald, LaMichael, Patton, Ellington, Kap (quite possibly his best game was his very first start).

The telegraphed message from York/Baalke seems to be that Harbaugh was great at winning with the pieces he had, but not the guy to build a sustaining long-term success.

Not saying they are right. Or that Tomsula is the guy to do it. But that seems to be the issue, not any specific roster move.

Only scenario he'd stay as DC is with an offensive-oriented HC who let him (Fangio) run the defense his way.

This would not have been my choice, but it will feel a lot better if they get some really good coordinators. OC is the huge question. Who is going to develop Kap while simultaneously playcalling to the strengths of the offense as a whole?

Tomsula seems like a great d-line coach, guys who have played for him think highly of him and he's been around the game a long time, but I have no idea what his plan is for the team as a head coach. Being a long time position coach he hasn't really been able to demonstrate any big picture influence.

I had actually talked myself into being excited about Gase as he has a strong reputation as an innovative offensive schemer. I would love to see the 49ers actually start to take advantage of all the rule changes that benefit the passing game instead of building big, plodding, physical teams with no explosive playmakers. (Well, I guess Vernon counts as an explosive playmaker but I've never felt like the 49ers fully utilized his speed at his peak)

Have to wait to see who Tomsula hires as assistants but this hire doesn't really make me excited about the next era of 49ers football.

LOL @ anyone still having faith in ownership, a family that's gotten more things wrong than they've gotten right (harbaugh hire). the onus/culpability is on them 100% if this doesn't work out either.

you should've heard all the levi's SBL ticket holders flooding the airwaves yesterday.

tomsula basically needs to go 11-5 and make the playoffs in two years MAX, and it ain't even his fault.

And though he's not particularly media-trained (as evidenced by yesterday's presser), the players like and respect the guy, which will go a long way.

This isn't a team in free-fall that needs a major shake-up. This is re-calibration.

In response to Reply # 0

i'm with this as long as he'd know his role and be committed to sticking around for a while.

On Friday, we shared the news that Kyle Shanahan has turned down an opportunity to interview for the offensive coordinator job with the 49ers.

There wasn’t a specific reason given for that decision, but it seems the 49ers may wind up with a Shanahan on their coaching staff anyway.

Dianna Marie Russini of NBC4 in Washington reported the news on Shanahan and she’s now reporting that Mike Shanahan is “in play” for the offensive coordinator job on Jim Tomsula’s staff. Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com has heard the same, although he reports only that Shanahan could take a job on the coaching staff.

Shanahan was the 49ers offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994, working with Steve Young and winning a Super Bowl before heading to Denver as a head coach.

It would be quite an unexpected development for the elder Shanahan to return to the NFL as an assistant coach at 62 after three head coaching stints, but it would give Colin Kaepernick an experienced guide as he tries to rebound from a rough 2014 season while also beefing up the experience around Tomsula as he embarks on his first permanent head coaching gig.

"Huge red flags" is putting waaaay too much on it. Yes, the ownership are a bunch of dicks, but this was one 0.500 season after three straight seasons of making the conference finals. We're getting back most of the important talent next year. Baalke might not have gotten along with Harbaugh last season, but he's still very good at drafting talent. Tomsula is an unknown as a head coach, but just because he was like a deer in headlights during his first presser doesn't mean he won't be able to coach.

Things are uncertain now, but it's not like we're on a one-way road headed back to the days of the mid-'00s.

I really like Tomsula and hope he rises to the occasion. Every first-time head coach is a gamble. He feels like a big gamble, but we'll find out.

I just think it's unlikely someone like Shanahan would want to return to being a coordinator. Relatively rare. Also didn't think Harbaugh would return to college (also rare), but he did. So who knows.

be a norv turner and swallow your pride at age 62.

maybe make him the highest paid coordinator + give him TOTAL control of the offense... who knows.

if tomsula's not going to become singletary 2.0 or worse (where's my stopwatch?), he's going to need a seasoned mind or two who knows what they're doing, be it shanny or trestman.

And doesn't let ego in the way, good for him. I think he'd be a solid pick, provided he accepts his role and isn't interested in playing power games to undermine Tomsula.

Chudzinski feels like the best pick. Did good things with Cam. Younger and less set in a specific system. Also coached Frank so gotta think that increases Frank's chance of coming back.

Best case scenario: 1980s Bill Parcells

Blue collar leader who unites team around a common attitude. Defense remains top tier and ball-control offense returns. Deep playoff runs. Always a tough out.

Worst case scenario: Mike Singletary

"Leader of men" who is way out of his depth and flounders. Quality coordinators avoid franchise. Player development languishes. Team morale spikes early next year but tanks. Fired at end of 2nd losing season.

Do we have any idea who wanted that? Harbaugh? Roman? Baalke?

Not sure I can put Vernon's mailing it in on his position coach. Vernon is a vet and a pro bowl level talent.

Now the lack of development of Vance McDonald looks like a glaring coaching failure, though that precedes Mangini.

Chryst had a pretty awful tenure as an OC in San Diego.

As QB coach he seems to have done some good things with Alex and Kap in 2011-12. Kap's development stagnating the last two years is certainly on Harbaugh and Roman, but quite possibly on Chryst as well.

He also was the primary playcaller for the two-minute offense in 2011. No idea if that continued, but he has been given credit for the Alex Smith QB9 and Vernon Post calls in the Saints game.

An exciting OC hire? No. Better than Greg Roman? Just maybe.

From Tim Kawakami:

"Harbaugh's general set-up: Roman called 1st-2nd-down plays, Solari called short-yardage, Morton called 3rd-down passes & Chryst Red Zone..."

That's ridiculous. As talented as any/all of those coaches might be, there's no wonder they consistently had trouble getting plays in on time.

Though it's hard to diagnose. How much influence did Harbaugh have in each phase of the playcalling? And when Chryst did call the plays, he was presumably still calling plays Roman designed?

gase + fangio > tomsula + mangini

stop acting new.

>jed: "it was a mutual parting"

I think we all knew the "mutual parting" thing was BS.

How about the scenario where York/Baalke asked Harbaugh to fire Roman, Harbaugh refused, York said you go down with him if you don't make the playoffs, and then when they are out of contention Harbaugh gets fired?

We know that they tried to extend Harbaugh's contract last offseason and then in the process somebody (Harbaugh's agent, York?) introduced the bizarre Cleveland trade idea. Then things seemed to go south. So it wasn't as if York/Baalke have been planning to axe Harbaugh since the NFCCG last year.

>adam gase: "i accept the job assuming fangio is my DC"
>jed: "no, tomsula will be your DC"
>gase: "ok bye"

The love for Tomsula really is strange. As is the belief that your HC should not get to pick his coordinators. I think a strong GM is generally a good thing (rarely does a coach with GM powers work out) but they are forging a new model here.

Those closer to the ground can correct me if wrong, but I'm hearing that management had an issue with such a high paid coaching staff (even though the fucking coaching staff WON games), and that they were trying to sabotage Harbaugh early on. When Jay Glazer, Deion, and Trent Dilfer were saying all that shit early, was it all fabricated by them as mouthpieces of management, or was there some validity to it?

Aside from the clusterfuck of playcalling laid out above (which is not surprising by the way given the results), the main thing I lay at Harbaugh's feet is the stunted development of the franchise quarterback he made major moves to place at the helm, and subsequently, the offense. As an offensive coach, it SHOULD have improved. Kaep has shit he needs to work on but damn if he hasn't gotten worse the LONGER he's been in the system.

Not saying my first choice would have been to fire Harbaugh, and definitely not in the way they chose to do it, but I was becoming increasingly frustrated with offensive ineptitude. That being said, management doesn't look as if the plan AFTER Harbaugh was well thought out. I think Tomsula can be a solid coach, because unlike Singletary, he's spent A LOT of time actually coaching, but I hope that Jed sits his fucking ass down and keeps cutting checks. How they've conducted things does not promote a lot of goodwill nor does it place much confidence in the decisionmaking. He best not become a penny pincher like his folks were in the late 90s and 2000s.

My understanding (I'm not remotely close to the ground though) is that they had a problem with the very large, high paid offensive staff which dramatically underperformed. Fangio had half the coaches Roman did and less cap money invested on his side of the ball.

Yeah, this is the one indisputable mark against Harbaugh. Go back and watch Kap's very first game as a starter against Chicago. He looks like a different player in some ways. I know they must have given him really simple reads but his decision-making is much quicker and more decisive.

Now is promoting the QB coach who clearly had some hand in Kap's stagnant development the answer? Not sure about that. Time will tell.

In response to Reply # 0

http://www.csnbayarea.com/49ers/rugby-league-star-picks-49ers

Australia rugby league star Jarryd Hayne announced Monday night he will begin his possible NFL career with the 49ers. His announcement was made Tuesday on television in Sydney, which is 19 hours ahead of the Pacific time zone.

Hayne, 27, will join the 49ers' 90-man offseason roster and faces long odds to make it through training camp and make a contribution during the regular season. He will be eligible to join the 49ers' offseason program on April 6.

He made visits to the 49ers, Detoit Lions and Seattle Seahawks. Daily Telegraph in Sydney reported last week that Hayne would sign with the Lions.

At a recent pro day, Hayne checked in at 6 foot 2, 226 pounds. He reportedly ran the 40-yard dash in an unofficial time of 4.53 seconds. Hayne projected as a running back and possible return man. He caught passes out of the backfield and fielded punts at his pro day, which was held at the University of San Diego.

Hayne won the National Rugby League’s equivalent of the most valuable player for a second time last season. In October, he was given a conditional release from his team, the Parramatta Eels, to allow him the opportunity to pursue a career in the NFL.

Obviously, he faces stiff odds to land a spot on the 49ers’ 53-man roster. Carlos Hyde is the 49ers' top running back under contract. Kendall Hunter, who missed last season due to a torn ACL, is also under contract. Frank Gore is scheduled for unrestricted free agency.

Bruce Ellington returns as the 49ers' top punt returner. The 49ers also have late-season pickup Trindon Holliday, a speedster with four return touchdowns in 33 NFL games, under contract for next season.

The 49ers will begin the third year of an experiment to develop former British rugby player and Olympian Lawrence Okoye into an NFL defensive lineman. Okoye has spent the past two seasons working closely with Jim Tomsula, now the head coach. Okoye, who was an Olympic finalist in the discus in the 2012 London Olympics, spent his first season on injured reserve and was a member of the practice squad last year

Truly the end of an era. An all-time great 49er. Incredible drive and passion for the game. Probably the best to leave here without a ring.

That said, the Eagles are apparently offering a 3-year $15mil deal with $7.5 guaranteed. With Hyde and Hunter in the wings, that just doesn't make sense for this team right now.

Still...

baalke hasn't drafted wideouts well and we need a deep threat already.

i want stevie back (he's better than crabtree and was way underused -- kap had 102 qb rating when he targeted stevie), but cutting him clears $6 mill in cap space. and by all accounts, baalke...err i mean tomsula wants to run the ball more.

sounds like cully's gonna get a good pay day and isn't coming back.

It's just a way bigger FA signing than I thought we were in the market for. T. Smith would be a great addition. Basically an already developed best-case scenario for whoever we'd draft at #15.

Agreed that we underused Stevie. He was definitely better than Crab in 2014 but couldn't see the field even before he got hurt.

If this happens, have to think our biggest need in the draft is now CB. Which happens to be one position Baalke actually drafts well...

There is no scenario imaginable where they ship Kap and end up with an upgrade at QB. The FA QBs suck. They're not getting a QB-for-QB trade that remotely benefits them. They're not getting Winston and Mariota is basically Kap Jr.

In the "they're going into rebuild mode" theory, why pay big $ for Torrey Smith? Why sign old-ass Dockett?

I mean, this franchise has surprised me, but this would top everything.

but a buddy from work said he was hearing rumors of Kaep to Tampa for 2015 1st and 2016 1st and 3rd. If that were the case i would kind of jump on that deal. Would save us money with wage scale i believe and get us Jameis who i think has a higher upside than Kaep.

Frank and Pat were basically the only reasons to watch this team for a good half decade.

Our Super Bowl loss just got twice as painful knowing these two all-time greats aren't going to get a ring.

Fuck.

If the injury is so bad that he's not going to be the same, I won't blame him for retiring. Might as well get out at the age of 30 while you're still mostly healthy.

But yeah, this makes not winning an SB between '11 and '13 seasons suck even more.

As much as I love the 49ers, I will always dislike Jed York... Even if the 49ers win the SB this year, and the next...

No Harbaugh
No Gore
No Willis
No Cowboy
No Kap (possibly)

This is not what 49ers season ticket holders signed up for...

>No Harbaugh

Clearly their fault. No arguments there.

>No Gore

Yeah, they're fault for not re-signing him, but the Eagles are giving him LOTS of money. I don't think we could/should have matched them at that price. Now, maybe if Harbaugh is still around, they could get him extended for one more year, but even that is dicey.

>No Willis

Turf toe sucks. That's not the York's fault. Again, you could maybe say if Harbaugh is still around, Willis tries to soldier through it, but maybe he's never the same regardless, and he hurts himself even further. I can understand him just walking away.

>No Cowboy

There'd been talking of him retiring even before SB XLVII. I'm surprised he stuck around for two more seasons.

>No Kap (possibly)

Yeah, this would be beyond dumb. But it's not happening.

The Willis retirement seems to have no connection to Harbaugh. In fact, he was always rumored to be one of the prominent anti-Harbaugh veterans that we heard so much about.

It's not like Willis is demanding a trade. He is walking away from the game at 30. Can't see how the coaching change prompts that.

these guys are canny vets. they've made their paper. but they know it's a wrap and a SB ring isn't coming with the york-appointed, three-headed "monster" of tomsula-mangini-chryst running the show.

I honestly don't see why any player would want to come here... Just seems like one big shit show... Silver spoon Jed York and his lackeys have fucked up what could've been an amazing 5-10 year run...

EDIT: And you gotta remember, these guys might not have all loved Harbaugh, but they loved Fangio... At least Smith and Willis did...

I think most of us welcome being pleasantly surprised but most of us all don't think next seasons is gonna be any better than this season.

I don't see Hyde carrying the rock like Gore can... I'm really hoping he does well... And I'm hoping Kendall Hunter comes back and can make through a full season... They said they want to run the ball, but they let Frank go? We need another O-Lineman... Losing Willis' leadership is huge... Kap aint pumping up nobody pregame...

My favorite player since the 90s.

But this is for the best for both team and Frank. Gore is getting paid more, will get more carries, and has a better chance at a ring with Indy.

We need to move on to younger players. Baalke can call it what he wants, but this is a rebuild.

Now it has not been a great offseason, CLEARLY.

But this team, and those PLAYERS, Gore and Willis, have been through much worse. MUCH WORSE. We just once again have expectations of doing shit.

This is why that Giants game still hurts the most. I didn't know all this would happen, but I know that missed opportunities come back to haunt you.

What's odd is that the offense seems to be doing some major things right now, but in fairness it really needs to as our defense is losing its core.

Wake me up in September though, I got too much shit to do to track the day in and day out of the offseason.

So 9 years later we finally win the the Bush sweepstakes.

I'm cool with the signing. I think he still has value if used correctly--hopefully this means Chryst and Logan will install a decent screen game in our playbook.

I wonder if we're bound for a true running back by committee. Sounds like it's Baalke's preference, though I feel like Hyde is one of those guys who really needs the touches to get into a rhythm.

Ugly to see reporters who probably never played a down of high school ball pile on this kid (while most players seem to be defending him).

Especially with the "return to the running game" rhetoric coming from Baalke.

He's gonna need a prove it deal with some team where he can at least be the #2. Sounds like Oakland could be a good fit. Which would be good for us since it might give OAK a reason to not take a WR in the first round.

A former player for the San Francisco 49ers and Oakland Raiders is in trouble with law for the second time in two years.

San Francisco police said they found Kwame Harris unconscious behind the wheel of his car with the engine running on Sunday morning.

The incident was reported at 7:31 a.m. when officers were flagged down by a citizen at 14th Street and South Van Ness Avenue about a driver who might be in need of assistance.

When police tried to handcuff Harris, he tried to bite an officer's hand.

Police said Harris was in an "altered mental state" and hit two parked cars prior to his arrest.

In December 2013, Harris was sentenced to five days in jail for beating up his ex-boyfriend.

i mean, teams BEEN knowing who they want to draft by now.

per matt maiocco, you think we'll trade up from #15 to #5 or 6 to take amari cooper or kevin white? (supposedly baalke wanted odell beckham last year but it was too costly at the time)

yeah, it's been a loooong time. decided to peak my head in oksports a few days ago and i got all nostalgic. gonna try to come back every now and then. i totally missed out on the 49ers' most recent "glory years (year)" on this board but hopefully not all is lost for next year.

it's hard to keep faithful but there's still lots of talent there.

But I feel like this 9ers are doomed talk has swung way too far the other way. Not saying I expect this team to run the table on the way to a Super Bowl but acting like a 6 win or less season is a given just doesn't make sense to me. Again, it may indeed collapse but like you said there is still a lot of talent there and as long as we don't go back to Sing level coaching & game planning I think this team can compete.

In response to Reply # 139

Widest range of possible outcomes since 2011. We could go 4-12, we could go 10-6. Nothing inside of that would be surprising.

OLINE - should be better barring injury

QB - I see Kap improving at least incrementally

RB - Production should be good, drop-off will be in pass pro

TE - couldn't be worse than last year

WR - see TE

DLINE - Feel like we're going to miss Ray and Justin a lot

LB - If Bowman is back to his old self, we should be okay.

CB - Huge question mark. Especially if we aren't getting pass rush from front four.

SAFETIES - Should be okay.

ST - Probably won't be able to say until after draft.

COACHING - ???

If he doesn't retire, they'd have to hold his roster spot and pay him for those games even if he doesn't play.

Seems like a lot to ask unless he's given assurances he'll definitely play.

He's got a ton of talent, he wants to win, and he's physically on another level.

When Steve Young was his age he was still a crazy improvising running QB who took too many sacks.

didn't need a d-lineman most here.

drafted carradine and dial for this.

four sacks armstead's entire collegiate career.

someone needs to run some metrics to see if baalke's wheelin-and-dealin-to-stockpile-more-picks steez has actually paid real dividends during his tenure.

I don't love the pick, but could work out long term. We don't have Ray or Justin this year. Docket is a stopgap for a year or two at best. Hopefully Carradine comes through. If Arik pans out we are set for awhile.

Still a lot of talent on the board. Excited to see who we can get in Round 2 and 3.

I assume Tomsula had a lot of weight in this pick and knows what he's doing.

Next priorities:

TE - Let's not forget how terrible Davis and McDonald were last year.

OG - Boone gonna hold out again?

CB - Baalke loves the value dudes in the 4th round and on

WR - We're okay for 2015. Need a long-term replacement for Boldin.

lots of coulds, ifs and conjecture surrounding him.

i'm good with taking another TE early. vernon can still ball. i just don't think he cares anymore. imagine how more many yards/TD's he could've had for his career if he wasn't so scared of contact.

>OG - Boone gonna hold out again?

fuck 'em, even if it's only a skip-out on voluntary workouts. this is same guy who came to harbaugh's defense during the season, then turns around and shits on him when he'd left the building.

dude ain't even good enough to be a distraction worth stomaching.

we'll see what smith does as a big-splash FA for 49er standards. before his time is over in SF, hopefully baalke drafts a wideout who actually pans out.

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick tweeted he meant "no disrespect" minutes after tweeting a link to an Instagram photo of major flooding in Houston with the comment "I warned you the #7tormscoming."

At least eight people have been killed and 13 remain missing due to severe flooding in Texas.

Kaepernick deleted the insensitive Instagram photo within minutes of posting it but not before it was captured for posterity.

Two hours after Kaepernick tweeted that he intended no disrespect, he posted a more substantial apology, saying: “I'm so sorry about my insensitive post earlier today. I didn't fully understand how many people are struggling in Houston right now and I feel horrible. My prayers are with everyone there."

it was a stupid tweet, sure, but the media blows up anything this guy does. how does this lead to a formal apology but bruce miller hasn't said anything (or maybe he has and because he's a fb, i missed it).

what he should be apologizing for is his bad 7pelling.

its not just about the spelling, insensitive remarks or bickering with people on twitter.

but when you step back and consider all of it. This just seems like an immature guy who will crumble in big moments.

He loves to remind us how hard he's worked this off season. Cool. But at some point you gotta stfu and just get ready for the season to show us rather than telling us.

I'm hoping he loves the game as much as he does the spotlight. We know for sure which one those he loves right now.

that's true.

for all intents and purposes, jed's running it into the ground.

the burden/onus is squarely on him (and paraag "what would you say you do here?" marathe) to show that this new staff is gonna pay off. tomsula, mangina and chryst incidentally all get a pass for whatever happens next year, imo.

and baalke's whiffed on scouting/drafting as of late. i think jed's gonna axe him too if we don't make the playoffs by the end of 2016. and kap will playing in the afc.

(as for bruce miller, supposedly he threw his girl to the ground also. i guess we'll never know.)

edit: nevermind re: disciplinarian. was thinking it was about miller and all history of arrests during harbaugh's run.

I believe Pat when he says his feet were really done. He just couldn't run anymore. That had nothing to do with York, Harbaugh, anybody. Just his body was done. A lot younger than J Smith but basically for the same reasons.

Easy to see Davis being influenced by Borland though. Davis was very vocal about how concerning his concussion was last year and how fucked up he thought it was that Harbaugh was screaming for him to get off the field (to avoid a time out) when he was concussed. (Not saying Harbs knew AD was concussed).

Dunno. The Curse of Levis.

EDIT: If it was purely disappointment in the front office, they'd ask for a trade, not retire. Players don't throw away years of good money just because they think the organization sucks.

Andy has diminished the last couple years from "great" to "pretty good." And the new kid is a lot cheaper. Plus he kicks off. I get this.

Still, there were years with this team where Andy was legitimately one of the top 3 players. Losing him, Willis, and Gore in one year is basically saying goodbye to the mid-2000s entirely.

One silver lining to the retirements is that we have a lot of cap space. Willis, J Smith, A Davis, and Andy Lee cleared a bunch of money off the books.

You think we go get an FA like Mathis? Or does it just get worked into contract restructuring and/or rolled over to next year?

For some reason his game checks for this season aren't tallied because the formula considers him "unlikely to earn" them. So as long as he doesn't call in any bomb threats that's $4 mil right there.

Yeah, Mathis is too steep and too old for where this team is at right now. Any other decent OL out there? Is Pears really our answer at RT?

if baalke and marathe are as good as jed thinks they are, make the numbers work then. float mathis an incentive-based contract... or maybe a normalized, lower salary with a big signing bonus since he's 34 y.o.

also, davis' retirement opens the door to alex boone getting a raise, which he might get since he was a good boy and reported to minicamp and could even move to tackle. ...and, the niners have more cap $$ in 2016 to pay out.

not holding my breath on pears being anything more than a backup. he was 76th in performance out of 78 guards graded last season.

incredible.

even as the facts trickle in, they're still gonna cut him reluctantly to save face. baalke got called out during an interview last year on the double standard between bouncing ray macdonald and not aldon, notwithstanding talent levels.

"winning with class" - jed.

aldon's an alcoholic... and with Recovery comes relapses. but driving and being reckless is what's really gonna make goodell or a judge balk at clemency.

(my guess is aldon says "i was drinking and i'm sorry, but i wasn't behind the wheel. my boy was.")

In response to Reply # 0

it's incredible how over-engineered the offensive staff was, considering how much they underachieved on the field.

"SANTA CLARA – One of the changes that has been enacted on the 49ers’ practice field this season gives quarterback Colin Kaepernick an opportunity to express his voice in the huddle.

During training camp and regular-season practices the past four seasons, then-coach Jim Harbaugh often took control and made the play call to the offense. This summer, the 49ers are practicing the mechanics used in games with quarterbacks coach Steve Logan transmitting in the play call to Kaepernick via the earpiece in his helmet.

Then, Kaepernick relays the call in the huddle -- just as he will during games."

it also prob didn't really help kap learn the system. i'm not making excuses...but three years in and he still relies on the armband cheat sheet way too much.

Didn't think I would make it to any games this season because I moved to Oregon, but I decided to extend my California trip in October and I'll be hitting up the Ravens game... Anyone else going?

At least at the moment

Hayne looks really good with his cuts man. I was a little worried about that coming in. Rugby guy with his pads too high - dude could surprise ppl

Wanna see more of Mike Purcell too. See what that kid can do. Quick on his feed for a NT

i thought isaac sopoaga was back.. then i realized it was purcell.

hayne had a nice debut. some big holes he ran through. really wanna see how the dude does taking on an ILB or safety head-on with that running style. my guess is he makes the 53-man as a special teamer, unless he completely lights it up as a ball carrier and challenges bush or hunter on the RB depth chart.

yo, how does kap overthrow the fastest guy on the field? (lol @ all the subsequent overreactions on twitter: "gabbert looked great. start him now!")

first team defense gave up a lot of plays/3rd-down conversation in zone on those first two drives. was refreshing though to see those 7 stops in a row on goaline in the midst of brock's PI call.

geep chryst tight end flat route appreciation.

Hard to read too much into the preseason but I can't see any reason why Jarryd Hayne shouldn't make the team as a return man who gets occasional snaps at running back.

Damn good to see him on the field again. He was Arguably just as good or as good as Patrick the last time he was on the field. I don't expect the D to be as bad as people expect. Carradine got some good push and Purcell looks pretty good. If the offense can keep the ball and convert in the red zone i think this year might be a lot better than people expect.

we'll see what he does with brooks while he's in legal limbo, given that he's one of two stud LB's left.

LT Staley
RG Boone
C Martin
RG Devey (!?)
RT Pears

Brandon Thomas not being able to crack that starting lineup says volumes. A. Davis retiring after the draft was shitty luck, but the RG situation is on Baalke.

Kap's goal this year needs to be to just survive. It's clearly now a rebuilding year (we're like $15 mil under the cap).

Guessing Reggie Bush won't be around next year and Hunter takes that spot.
