"Jim Harbaugh is overrated"
Mon Dec-08-14 06:11 PM by COOLEHMAGAZINE

I'm going to say it now because people are still talking about this guy like he can do no wrong and the current situation in Niner land has no reflection on his abilities as a coach.

I don't doubt that he can help coach up teams that need some fighting spirit and a "name" coach who can come in and command respect.

But...this is an offensive coach whose offense keeps regressing no matter how many talented players they add. Not only that, but the offense has no discernible identity and often seems to be selecting plays at random.

The only consistent thing about the Niners has been playing hard (like I said, if you are lacking in spirit, Harbs can probably provide) and great defense, which is presumably the work of Vic Fangio.

It's not that I think he is a terrible coach or something but dude seems like a cross between Gruden and Ken Wisenhunt.

If the Niners get a decent hire at coach next year and keep Fangio, they will be BETTER than they were with Harbaugh.

Raiders could prolly use his discipline etc, but if they trade a first round pick for him they are idiots.

If the Jets dump Rex for Harbuagh that would be the actual definition of hustling backwards.

And took a historically terrible football program saddled w/ some of the
most cripplingly high admissions standards to NATIONAL prominence.
Like, dude was whooping 5*s at USC coached by Pete Carroll with
National Merit Scholars.

His biggest failures to date appear to be a run-of-the-mill, slightly-below-
average season and tensions with management.

But by all means, I hope everyone else thinks he's overrated and he can
land in Ann Arbor.

College football I can't call it but mind you, I am not saying he is a flat out bad coach, just seriously overrated. At least in the NFL context.

People are talking about teams will jump to trade first-rounders for dude.

He is not any better than Rex Ryan.

How long has Rex Ryan been in the league? What are his stats?

Ryan's first 3 seasons

2 AFCCG's and a .500 season

Not as good as Harbaugh's first three years, but pretty fucking good, no?

Also, Harbaugh inherited a more talented team in a division without a dominant team (at the time) like the Patriots.

Give me all the assholish behavior due to his coaching ability. If Harbaugh's not there the 9ers aren't playoff contenders/possible Super Bowl favorites. It's not easy to find a good NFL coach word to Dennis Erickson. Harbaugh is a cantankerous person according to sources within that organization but he's a helluva an NFL coach and that's hard to find in this league.

For the record, I want them to keep Harbaugh so we can HOE them some more. If he leaves and they suck the victory won't be half as fun.

*EDIT*

Harbaugh is a miracle worker but needs to stay out of environments with nosey media. Imagine him dealing with the NY media. Oakland seems like a good spot but the Jets will give him anything he wants. Hercy Parvin seems like a Harbaugh guy due to his attitude. I want him to stay in San Fran but if he leaves for Oakland that fan base will be the happy for years off the strength that he's there. If money's the issue then head to NYC.

You seen the Niners offense this year with Kaep, Crabtree, Boldin, Johnson, Gore, Hyde, Davis and a not-great-but-not-bad oline?

Now imagine that same approach starring Eric Decker, Chris Ivory, Jace Amaro and Jeremy Kerley, with a garbage oline.

Harbaugh is the last thing the Jets need.

He drifts away from trouble really well, doesnt lose accuracy while on the move, and throws a nice deep ball. Good arm too...not a Henne arm, but thats ok.

He gets into trouble when he starts worrying about getting hit as he throws but its totally random. Sometimes he stands tall amd takes a shot while throwing a good ball and sometimes he Devin Gardners it off his back foot. DG had to live through hell tho so its not surprising it eventually got to him. Speight hasnt lived with anythong close to that type of duress so thats kind of a bummer for him to react that way.

I would say he is as good right today as peak Navarre with room to grow. Probably not a coincidence they both had/have a pair of excellent "bad ball catchers". Also, im pretty sure Speight has the benefit of better play design than whatever Debord had Navarre doing.

If you're playing different schools every year you still have to rely on them being good in that given year. You definitely won't see schools scheduling multiple blue blood programs in the OOC schedule. Honestly with the playoff there isn't a reason to have a tough OOC schedule anyways if you are in one of the major conferences that has a conference championship - you'll control your own destiny either way.

In 20-21 they have opposite h&h with VT amd UW

And then after that they have UT and OU over the next 4 years and i bet they cram ND in there too.

True series against ND, VT, UW, UT, and OU are as good as anything anyone else is doing, especially if they will be running concurrent.

i thought that the playoffs would de-emphasize the importance but really just the opposite...look at the blowback that wash is getting for their crap OOC schedule. and OSU can potentially benefit greatly from beating oklahoma. i think the new structure has clearly emphasized the importance of scheduling legit teams.

edit: meant to reply to truth

the reality is that Hoke's first team was a 10+ win team with Rich Rod anyways AND had Denard Robinson. not to mention his teams got progressively worse from the point, after taking over a team that had gotten progressively better over two years.

Harbaugh meanwhile took over the aforementioned progressively worsening team, and immediately won a citrus bowl in year one. after that, they got even better despite starting an "Al Borges special" at QB. they were one spot away from going to the B1G title game against 2 teams they had already beaten.

Hoke dismantled an ascending team and ruined the 2 most talented QBs Michigan has EVER had in the entire history of the program. Harbaugh turned a combined 5 stars worth of 2 QBs into 19 wins, a Citrus Bowl, a legit NFL backup, and fell short of the playoff by inches.

that's a super silly comparison. lets see where we are at after 51 games. Hoke was 31-20. i dont think Michigan is losing 10 of their next 17. the defense needs only time to be back to a top 5 unit, and they are going to win more games this year because they still have the best DL in the country.

and again, the QB situation. cmon.

ruined whatever morris could have been, speight was a miss, malzone was a miss

Brandon Peters was JH's first QB recruit and he is a redshirt freshman. McCaffrey is behind him as a true freshman. If Peters isnt ready next year, then thats a serious problem, unless McCaffrey is ready, and then its not.

its not a coincidence Michigan is starting a shitload of youth on offense. the recruiting was terrible until 2015 in all aspects, and it continues to plague them. any success they have had up to now is because of Mattison's work pre-JH, and the fact that Hoke actually did hit on Butt, Darboh, Perry, and Chesson. But thats pretty much it on that side of the ball.

it's not as if other elements of the offense are clicking either. go find yourself a playmaker or two who can take some pressure off the qb.

and OKorn was an insurance policy. i suppose it counts as a whiff, but even having to recruit him in the first place is an L for Hoke.

Speight is serviceable, if there was anything else serviceable on the roster before that Rudock and OKorn never come to Michigan in the first place.

talking about this now is ridiculous. i dont mean you and i talking about the specifics, but they went to the wire in columbus and fell short. everything was on the line for them on the last week of the season in year 2 and they lost in double OT. now after like 10 of mattisons goons go to the league they were supposed to surpass that?

nah. thats all nonsense, and it runs parallel to the nonsense in 2010 for RR. I thought they would have showed better vs PSU, and the defense is too young to be elite (except Mo Hurst and the DL - still the best), but all reasonable expectations are being met.

they lost 3 out of their last 4 games. One of them at Iowa. they folded like a cheap suit against OSU when they had the game won. They won 1 game outside the state of michigan - rutgers.

mich jhas finished no better than 3rd in their division and are currently 1-4 against their rivals and soon to be 1-5. NO mich fan would've signed up for these results. substitute the name harbaugh with any other coach and they'd be warming up the exits by now.

i think you also realize that all of harbaughs shit talking, twitter wars and contrived publicity stunts add to the expectation levels...and consequently when this level of achievement ins't reached...that media and opposing fan bases will go extra hard when critiquing his performance. that's just how the game goes.

6 – 5 in the last 11 games

0 – 5 against teams over 0.500 in that time.

Michigan has now lost 15 consecutive road games to ranked opponents, going back 10 years.

in each one there is a blue chip QB recruit, one is true FR the other is RSFR

there is no resonable expectation for either of them to have led UM to 7-0 right now

WHAT A TIME TO BE ALIVE

Except for the typical idiots clamoring for Peters right now.

Mind you, the same idiots who were clamoring for O'Korn at this time last season.

People are dumb. I hate them.

The Ravens have been stuck in neutral for four years and John can't seem to get out of his own way. He's not much of an x's and o's guy and it's becoming apparent in his faulty coordinator hires. I think his coaching style lends itself more to college and he's probably have a better career there than Jim.

Streets won't let me chill.

A great deal.

Wasn't even worth it for me, nor worth my time quite honestly.

That says a lot cause any other time I would have jumped on it.
