Report: Steve Nash to miss entire 2014-2015 season with nerve damage

By Matt Moore | NBA writer
October 23, 2014 8:06 pm ET

Bleacher Report reports that Lakers point guard and two-time-former MVP Steve Nash will miss the entire 2014-2015 season due to recurring nerve damage in his back.

Nash is expected to be ruled out for the 2014-15 NBA season because of recurring nerve damage in his back, according to league sources.

Nash, 40, had said he expects this 19th NBA season to be his final one. But he has not announced his retirement. Nash has not stated an intention of playing for a team away from Los Angeles and his children, saying in March that he would be done if the Lakers used their stretch provision to cut him for salary-cap savings: "That would be it. I'll either be back here or I'll be done."

via Unable to Overcome Ongoing Back Issues, Steve Nash to Miss 2014-15 Season | Bleacher Report.

And that's probably it. That's probably, most likely, how it ends for the future Hall of Famer. Nash wanted to see if he could get through this season, but was pretty clear that this was his final year. And now he doesn't even get to say goodbye to the game he loves.

Nash averaged 6.8 points and 5.7 assists last year in just 15 games for the Lakers.

Nash, 40, has struggled with a degenerative back condition for most of his career. He's always shown lying down during timeouts to stretch and rest it, but once he left the Phoenix Suns and their magical training staff, his body just fell apart. He even required epidurals to deal with the pain over the past year and a half. Most recently, he was injured simply picking up bags.

It isn't the way that a player like Nash should go out. He redefined the position in the mid-2000's, guiding a Suns team to a transcendent style of basketball and some epic Western Conference playoff battles.

Maybe it's possible he makes another run, but from here, this looks to be the end of the career of one of the best point guards of all time.

all jokes aside, much respeck to a guy who had a great career. Unfortunate that it had to end this way, but pro careers rarely end well.

Definitely first ballot HOF'er, and (D)'toni, Joe Johnson, the Matrix and a few others need to line up to say thank you to Nash to making them big money.

Can't see him coaching, but I think if I was a gm, I would have him under contract to work with my guards 3 weeks out of the year.

>there's nothing else abt his career that's remarkable or HOF worthy

you can wipe away nash's mvps completely, and he'd still have 8 all stars, 7 all nbas, 6 assist titles and 3rd all time in career assists. every single point guard with a more celebrated career is in the hall or will be (oscar, magic, cousy, zeke, stockton, payton, kidd)

i'll give him a pass for his lack of defense now.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

as getting bodied by Robert Horry during a critical sequence
in the playoffs in an odd moment that put an end to Nash's prime
Phoenix era, bouncing him from the offs in devastating fashion:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7LT_C7o5ZGM

I believe A'mare and/or some other key players cleared the bench after that and got suspended (in a series where A'mare was beasting on Duncan). Phoenix lost all momentum and unraveled, and this sort of typifies Nash's post-season troubles to me. Shouts to Stern for an absurd suspension in the wake of that Horry body-check, by the way. Horrible penalty.

Hall of famer, absolutey. Magician w/ the ball. But he did sort of benefit from #DatCaucasity (Peyton Manning Law) of being uber celebrated despite under-achieving at the biggest stage.
