East St. Louis lineman Terry Beckner named top recruit in nation by ESPN

Already one of the most sought after recruits in the country, East St. Louis Flyers senior Terry Beckner Jr. was elevated to the No. 1 senior football recruit in the nation — regardless of position — on the ESPN 300 recruiting list.

The 6-foot-4, 298-pound defensive end grabbed the No. 1 spot in the rankings in ESPN’s latest compilation. Beckner has 83 tackles, three sacks, one interception and one fumble recovery for the Flyers (4-4), ranked 10th in the latest Class 6A state poll and third in the News-Democrat Large-School rankings.

This is the first time since July that the ESPN 300 has a new No. 1 and Beckner wound up with the top spot. He also has been chosen to play in the prestigious Under Armour All-American Game along with Belleville West senior kicker and Oklahoma recruit Austin Seibert.

“He’s been very productive as a senior,” ESPN national recruiting coordinator Craig Haubert said in a video on the ESPN web site. “As a defensive lineman he’s closing in on over 100 overall tackles. He brings great versaility to the defensive line.

“He’s not only a very good football player, but there’s still a lot of upside there as well.”

Rivals.com’s football recruiting site has Beckner rated the top recruit in Illinois and No. 4 in the country. According to Rivals, Beckner has more than 20 scholarship offers from some of the top programs in the nation, including Florida State, Auburn, LSU, USC, Oregon, Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan, Florida and Missouri along with Illinois, Nebraska and several others.

He has yet to announce a verbal commitment but has numerous options to pick from among some of the nation’s top football universities. The athletic Beckner is also a basketball standout for the Flyers.
