"Ky Gon Ky. Let's discuss what's got reddit NBA and ISH forums going nuts"
Wed Oct-22-14 04:15 PM by Basaglia

so, Ky Ky had it going, scoring like 9 straight or some such and this happens:

http://giant.gfycat.com/PassionateAncientGalapagossealion.gif

Was it selfish? Do you think Love was mad? Was he supposed to make the correct play--which was passing to Love, to be real--regardless of context (Love was bricking everything and he was making everything)?

Is this a disaster waiting to unfold?

Here's what I think: It was the second option's first clue that he's not really the second option and he better get his big ass in position to board because he ain't in Minne no more.

The Reddit thread was filled with people who all said "he made the right decision, since he was on fire and Love had been firing up bricks." They just weren't getting the most upvotes (at least when I saw the thread) because most people come for the lulz and not for the logic.

I think Love is still surprised when a PG shot like that goes in. Not what he's been used to in Minnesota.

He was open off the pick. Nothing wrong with that a true stat nerd might say the open 3 was worth more but that wasn't a uncontested 2 for kyrie.

It's a similar shot to what wessy gets at the elbow. It's wide fuckin open and make able.

Most times off a pick action like that your 1st read is to attack and get what you can. I've never had a coach tell me come off a pick and immediately look tonpass (unless you're a terrible shooter/scorer).

I doubt love was mad. Anyone whose played ball has had that situation where you think you're open and you clap for the ball and the guy shoots or the qb throws to a different wr. You score and you're fine. Even if kyrie doesn't make that its a small conversation. What if kyrie passes that and love missed?
It happens through a course of a game. It's Bron and the teams job to not let these media blowups make them panic themselves. Pressure busts pipes.

Butbyea last night in the laker game Julius randle did something where he dribbled in and did nothing 2 wide open shooters and he played ballerina and threw it away. After the play jeremy talked to him. It isn't overblown today. It's over.

as a PG, he has to understand sometimes a guy needs a shot to get going. Love was 3rd in the league in scoring last year and shot better from 3 than Ky did. If the PG ain't looking to get that type of player going/comfortable in the offense, who's suppose to?

If that happens all season, it WILL become an issue. Probably to the detriment of the team too because Love is toxic when he's not happy. First 2-3 game skid or 4 losses in 6 games stretch and the grumbling will start.

Ky is use to HAVING to make those buckets. He won't need to do so as much with this team. It might take him a season (and a playoff failure) to figure it out.

He should be able to get 10-12 ast and 20 points without a ton of effort if he just absorbs the game instead of charging at it. He'll get there though...maybe.

Trolly McTrollerton.

But even in that...Rose has put up 7.9apg with MUCH less talent than Ky has around him right now. C'mon, don't do this to yourself.

I'd expect the same play from Rose if it were our team (I do recall Rose hitting Pau in the corner for a 3 he sank during this very game though...*shoulder shrug*).

Ky got a gunners mentality. Just cuz he's good at it don't mean it's always the BEST thing for the "team". In years past, I agreed that he NEEDED to go for dolo. They sucked.

Now? He better figure out that he got two doggs on the team with him and he's gonna need to set the table more. Though I don't mind Love being the 3rd option because that's just comedy to me, so he can carry on. lol

U would have a point if your point was true...Rose is a very willing passer. Its not his fault that his very good defensive minded coach's idea of offense is Rose or bust...

The one thing thats always been said about Rose is that he will do anything it takes to win...he hits the open man and uses his penetration to set up 3's...Dont be fooled by those past Bulls teams on which Rose was forced to fill it up because Deng was on the bench hurt because Thibs grinded him into the ground and Noah was the only true secondary scorer...

Its not the same as Ky (who I believe should not be judged off of that one play but will be counted on to get Love and other teammates off...) who now finds himself playing with guys who can score at will...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

if not worse vision than Kyrie since he's been in the league.

Just because he hasn't played in 3 years doesn't mean we've forgotten how he plays.

Bullshit Billy....Again, this dude was getting 8 assists (7.7 and 7.9 the following year) a game passing the ball to Keith Bogans at the 2 and other assorted journeymen players...Cut this silly shit out...lol. Even coming out of college Rose what not known as a scoring PG...That came about by necessity....

>Just because he hasn't played in 3 years doesn't mean we've
>forgotten how he plays.

Again...If I looked at this simplistically then yeah I would say that Rose had no vision and was a 2 guard trapped in a PG's body...But after really looking into Rose's time with the Bulls and burying my inner troll I would see that Rose's aggressive scorer's mentality came about because Thibs gave him the green light....And Thibs gave Rose the green light because the Bulls had few options on the offensive end...This year, we actually do. Now it will be up to Thibs forming an actual offensive game plan beyond just Rose playing Superman...The only question Bulls fans have is can Rose stay healthy....

The last thing anyone not named Skip Bayless and Billy Ocean is worried about is Rose not getting his teammates involved...

is in your hands all the time.

Do you make players around you better?

That's a common criticism of both Kyrie & Rose.

You can pretend it's not all you want, but it is.

Yes...Rose made Deng a better player just off of double teams alone...And when Deng was open, guess what? He passed the ball to Deng...He even passed th ball to Deng on transition...he also passed the ball to Keith Bogans for open 3's...

Again...I've seen Rose play both in college and in the pros...And no one in their right mind thought that Rose was going to be this scoring machine he would become in the PROS...He was a classic playmaking guard in college who used his dynamic drives to mostly score or kick out when he spotted the open man...With Iverson, dude played the same way he did in college...He even STARTED AT THE 2....lol

What you have seen in Rose's pro years is a player that was asked to carry more of the scoring weight because his team was flawed offensively...That's all to it...

U see, all that distributing is very easy when you are playing with two future HOFer's like Rondo had the luxury of doing...But when you are kicking out the ball to players who do not have a scorer's nature then yeah, it becomes a different story...

But really, all this is moot.

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Rose was never considered a playmaking pg. He drove. And jumped. And ran fast. Just stop.

He didn't. He didn't make a Deng better. Deng probably played better before Rose got there.

Rose was viewed as an athletic playmaking PG. He was not viewed as a scoring PG...In fact Thibs had to push Rose into scoring more because it wasnt in his mindset early on...But u only have to read the scouting reports on Rose when he was drafted. He was not viewed as a gunning PG who couldnt get his teammates open shots...That wasnt the case. AT ALL...

Works both ways.

Only thing is Kyrie has time on his side, he's healthier, tad better hoop instincts and smarter than Rose.

Yet, you see a bulls fan, Rose fan/supporter and get indignant like I can't have an opinion about a hoops play that involved passing?

LOL

Like you even WATCH Derrick play that often. He's not a gunner by game, he's a gunner by circumstance. Kyrie is a gunner by game, simply because he knows he can do almost anything he wants offensively. He's gonna have to curb that a lil for the sake of a ring IMO. We picked apart an OT game last year where he had Jarrett Jack WIDE OPEN CALLING FOR THE BALL in the corner and Kyrie drove into the D and bricked a shot which forced OT. Dude kinda has a history of going "It's ME time" which is cool because he has the talent but that won't work against elite teams. Ask the Spurs how well ball movement promotes everyone being involved and contributing to a title run.

>Only thing is Kyrie has time on his side, he's healthier, tad
>better hoop instincts and smarter than Rose.

Would be awesome if this post was about comparing Rose to Kyrie, but it's not.

I think what's being said is Rose (who came into the league as a playmaking point guard) became an offensive minded player by necessity...

It's not as simple as the guy who has to score AND distribute at a clip of 8 assists a game being called a gun...It's why said player is being asked to score...As opposed to the other gifted player (Ky) who was known coming into the league as a dynamic offensive minded player...

The knock on Ky, fair or not, is that he doesn't set up his teammates...I think folks will have plenty of chances to judge dude this season and should reserve final judgement until then....

But not getting his teammates involved has never been a knock on Rose...

The only knock people have on Rose is his health....

Well Mr. Officer, your charge would be accurate if I didn't also criticize my own teams PG when he does something that isn't very distributor friendly (I have but you don't be in Bulls threads like that so you prolly missed that fact huh officer?).

Regardless, Basa asking a question about Kyrie not passing to a wide open Kevin Love has nothing to do with me going in on Derrick Rose.

Where'd you get your training? What academy? I'd like to send them a scathing letter about your postal profiling.

It's called innocent until proven guilty Mr. Officer!!! IS THAT DASH CAM ON?!?!? SOMEBODY SHOOT VIDEO OF THIS HARASSMENT!!!

and don't bother trying to point out the context of the hot/cold hand to me. That's a bad basketball play Kyrie made, even if it worked.

Kobe's made a career of doing the same shit, so it's not like it's a travesty, but if a coach watches that back on film with Kyrie, hopefully they will point out he missed an obvious pass. Dude needs to grow his game.

having watched it for two seasons now, it definitely hurts the team. Every once in a while Lillard thinks he can hero-ball the team out of a hole, and it rarely works. The runs always happen when the ball is moving and there are more than zero passes in the offensive set.

Hopefully Bron can help Ky learn this sooner rather than later...

doesn't matter who takes it or what the result is -- an off the bounce 18-footer with a hand in your face is a bad shot, doesn't even matter that Kevin Love was standing five feet away wide open. It was a bad shot.

Kobe won chips doing that shit, maybe Ky can, too. Kobe also had Phil Jackson and Mayor Derek Fisher to help manage all the teammates he pissed off while he did it, too, so Ky better hope Blatt got some Feel in him...

but it's also consistent with the consistent knock on Kyrie, and it ties directly into the sulking, selfish malcontent knock on Kevin Love. In short, it's an awesome .gif.

who cares what ESPN talking heads say about Kyrie if he's winning games? If his floor vision sucks, it sucks. No amount of winning will paper over shitty basketball decisions for those who know the game.

That was 2 plays spliced together lol

But to the point, if Blatt is any good, he'll never let Irving consistently pass up open 3's for their best deep. Irving could get decent looks at the high elbow 30 times a game if he wanted to, and should definitely take some. But the big man has to be fed. Thats the next step in Irving's development. Love's is not to lose his shit when his point guard looks to get his.

I actually think that the irving-love relationship is gonna take a half-season or so to click. Irving has never had a big man who commands touches, and Love has never had a point guard with his own competent scoring ability.

The Pistons' title years were Zeke's 2 lowest scoring years of his career up to that point, other than his rookie year. Irving gotta do the same, especially since Isiah didnt have two top 3 scorers to deal with (luckily only one top 3 ego). At least if thats still the projection level.

But on this team, with some many scorers, that's what they really need in order to operate at maximum efficiency and to keep everyone engaged.

Kyrie is really good player and does a lot of things well. He's good enough that he will get his regardless. But I think if he can position himself to think get everyone going the first 3 quarters of the game, he'll find that they win more and he's able to take some of those big shots along with Bron late in games, and those shots will be easier too.

He shook his defender and got an open mid-range. And if he was hot, that makes the shot okay, not ideal, but okay.

I didn't like Love's body language on the shot. He gotta get used to not getting that look and not whine about it.

And honestly, I'd complain too if I wanted to play in the paint but coach was trying to keep Tristan Thompson on the floor.

Didn't sound like a touch-oriented complaint as much as a position-on-the-floor complaint to me. Which I've seen in-game too... he's doing an awful lot of standing on the perimeter and waiting. Like he doesn't know what to do with the ball not immediately being funneled to him. It'll likely just take him some time. Kyrie and Bron are already working together beautifully, but they're more ball-dominant.

But the style of play they are using (because it's what Bron wants) allows Kyrie to play the way he's used to playing. And it currently doesn't allow Love to play the way he's used to playing. Which is why Bron and Kyrie have looked great on the floor together and Love is still finding his groove.

Once he sees that a consistently fed Love means that he is free to do his Chris Webber* thing, he'll be happy to help

*Obviously thats got positive connotation to me. Im a Lebron hater forever, but ive always defended Webber's alleged lack of killer instinct for playing a spacing-based, extraordinary team game. Gotta give Bron the same credit.

Love is figuring out how to get involved right now. He's doing a lot of standing around on the perimeter, not moving terribly well without the ball consistently, etc. He's getting used to not being the focus and figuring it out. Which makes total sense.

Again, I felt his comments weren't a complaint about touches as much as about his positioning in the offense. He knows it will be easier to get him touches inside on a team with Kyrie, Bron, and all those catch-and-shoot perimeter guys, and if he likes playing inside-out, beginning the game with him running around the perimeter doesn't make much sense (or, at least, it will take an adjustment period for him).

He can get his 3s too, but they don't have an interior offensive presence at all, and he can absolutely be that. He can shoot 3s, as he's an excellent shooter, but if getting closer shots helps him find his shooting rhythm, they allow him to work inside out, and the Cavs don't have an interior offensive presence anyway, the rotations need to probably help Love out by positioning him inside more, where he's more likely to be consistently fed the ball than hovering around outside the perimeter among all the other shooters on the floor where he doesn't seem to want to be starting games anyway.

That isnt whining. Thats life as an elite scoring big, and he said nothing inflammatory.

The point guard, especially when the pg is an inferior player in the half court, has to make it a priority to give him touches if they are going to reach potential. Its really as simple as that.

Irving has a lot to prove at this point, because if he cant make this work (and fair or not it IS on him as the primary ballhandler) he'll just get replaced. Irving had sacred cow status when his issues were with Dion Waiters. He wont be afforded that if issues pop up with Love.

the limitations of "point guard" won't allow kyrie to reach his full potential. he's too good to have an artificial cap on his shot attempts.

If Irving is outscoring Love, that will likely be suboptimal for the Cavs

For the most part - he's right - but it's pre-season and he needs to allow the requisite time to gel.

As soon as he and Bron get 10-15 games under their belt, he'll have more easier looks than he could ever ask for.

He could have said this to Blatt, Bron, Kyrie in practice/a team meeting/reviewing film. But he said it to a reporter. There was NO reason to say these things to a reporter as a reporter can't change them. It was to make it public...which is whining.

and I want to beat them that way.

So there's no doubt, confusion, plea cops for either side.

Everyone expects the Cavs to win the East a minimum (and beat us to do so).

Hopefully we both get a shot at it, fully healthy. In the meantime:

I just hope he can withstand the demands of the regular season
schedule leading into the playoffs and remain durable.

One of the reasons why it was so fun to watch Lebron in Miami is because he had to through the very best to win those chips. MVP Rose, Indiana at the height of its powers, OKC at the height of its powers - and the Spurs at the height of theirs.

It's no fun when the game's greatest players don't match up in the offs.

I don't know about that - most experts I've seen have picked the Bulls to come out of the East - but it should be a great matchup.

the other three teams, yes. they were at the height of their powers.

bron has yet to see peak rose (the second best player in the conference) with a championship-ready supporting cast in the playoffs. fans deserves this. lebrons legacy deserves this. hopefully everyones health holds up.

they won over 60 games. So, it's going to be difficult
to match that level, particularly when you consider that
D. Rose was absolutely at the height of his powers at that moment
as the clear-cut MVP winner.

We'll see - I'm not wholly convinced that just adding Pau to this team automatically makes them better than that 2010-2011 squad which captured the league's best record.

it's more about the development of butler, mcdermott, and mirotic.

those three all have the potential to be more versatile offensively than anyone on 2011's roster outside of rose. key word is potential. because as of today the bulls could still use a second proven playmaker taller than 5'11. hopefully their learning curve is quick.

i mean, he was the ONLY offensive threat in minne for a loooong time. but, the man has a lower FG% than kyrie...i mean, c'mon.

love is settling in to being what he needs to be...a 18-20ppg/10-12rpg power forward.

and his outlet passes are worth max money. that's 6 free points a game.
