"The Most Happy Kobe Bryant Has Ever Made Me (LAINK OF ALL LAINKS)"

http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/11717596/is-kobe-bryant-reason-los-angeles-lakers-downfall

He's also just a few weeks' play from setting an all-time league record for misses. "The problem is, he's just not as good as he thinks he is," says one source in the Lakers' inner circle. "He's just not as efficient as he thinks he is. If he had the other intangibles, like LeBron, or if he was any kind of different person, it would have been easy for us to attract talent, retain it and win."

Guys, I PROMISE I'm not Henry Abbott, even though we're both white and bald. Today, I wish I were.

Kobe has one goal in mind at this point: climbing up the all-time points chart, even if it means he sets records in missed shots and is on an island all by himself, which is where he's been for years now.

Whereas Magic was the ultimate teammate, Bean holds a distinct and very different type of achievement: The ultimate alienator of teammates.

pick & roll plays.

Booz sets moving screen. Bean uses it only in an attempt to get some breathing room for a fade-away jumper in the corner. Bean misses and flashes boozer w/ the yeezus-shrug.

I'm here for this.

this abt Bean

Ppl blaming the management for NOT attracting any quality talent this off season but it wasn't Buss Jr.'s fault, they tired to woo the top FAs...but players ain't stupid, you know if we bloggers can see how much of a ball hog Kobe is then you know players are well aware that they can't play w/a dude who shoots as much as he does...

The Lakers always got the best FAs in the off season, players back in the day took pay cuts to play in LA...now La La land is no longer a FA destination...that is until Bean retires.

this could have been a really good piece that explores the legitimate complications kobe creates as a way to discuss the broader context of, this ALWAYS happens with every superstar player who becomes a larger than life, face of the franchise type. it happened with Cheese, it's happening with Kobe, and it'll absolutely happen with "The Cavs' Real GM."

it could also have discussed the broader dysfunction in the Lakers organization. that, to me, is the real story--that you got enough snitches running around to indicate that, good lord, this place is being run even more poorly than we thought.

but it's not any of those things, because of the tone of scandal journalism that's barely contained here. i kind of buy everything abbott says but still don't think he's proven anything, due to all this unnamed source crap.

and like Ba said, petty as hell

Still though - it's way inaccurate in many places. I highly doubt the Sessions thing "shook the franchise to it's core".

We'll wait while you scour the internet for anything other than Payton and Malone and their desperate ring chase at the end of their careers after it was crystal clear they couldn't get it done as The Man on their own team. We'll laugh when you trot out names like Mitch Richmond (out of gas and chasing a ring) or Isaiah Rider(ditto).

Then we'll laugh even more while you pretend that the Lakers had all this free cap room to sign all the best free agents we supposedly always got.

Then you could wait while I list all the teams who've struck out on the best free agents. Then you can wait while I list all the teams who struck out on the same free agents the Lakers couldn't land. Of course, that won't take long and I'll have a shit ton of free time while you scramble to find some bullshit to make it seem like you had a point.

Bravo. It's hard to make a statement as loud, stupid, and wrong as you just did, but by god, you pulled it off.

But you guys treating it like gospel is pretty hilarious.

The whole Shaq got treated like a media pincushion? Laughable at best. Some of you idiots still parrot that was Kobe's fault he left.

Ramon Sessions got offered a 2 year, $10 million dollar contract from the Bobcats and the Lakers only offered to pick up his $4.55 million dollar option.

Dwight Howard and Steve Nash came. Yeah the season was a disaster, but let's not act like they refused to come.

People seriously forget how good Kobe was. He's a shell of his former self, sure...but the goalposts moved so many times in his career and up until 2 seasons ago he was still an elite, decorated player. You Philly fans would give your left nut for 2 straight titles.

Jim Buss has made mistakes...but this article was unfocused in what they were, exactly. The D'Antoni hiring was the worst one, but in terms of personnel decisions, we simply haven't seen enough.

Yes, Kobe's contract sucks. Yes, he's broken down. But he's in his 19th season and he's one of like 3 dudes who will retire with the team that drafted them. I don't mind them paying him as a last thank you.

in LA weren't because of Kobe

It was because of FEEL who was/is the only coach w/enough cachet to reel in Kobe's ball hoggin

Notice after PHeel left is when Bynum started acting out on Mike Brown in particular who wasn't in a position to say Kobe stop shooting the damn ball so much and pass it down in the post where we have our best advantage against other squads <---Fill could and did say that to Bean

D'antoni couldn't do it either hence Howard bouncin too

But ya'll continue to plea cop and say "oh Howard wasn't mentally tough enough to play w/Kobe" foh

Right okay, so Bynum's best season was 2011-2012 where he was an all star, played 60 games, and averaged 18 and 12. Who was the coach then?

Bynum felt that playing with Kobe really hurt his game due to the fact that the ball is always in Kobe’s hands. Bynum said, I thought it really helped me a lot obviously at first, because he draws so much attention it’s hard for guys to double team and key on you, so it helped me tremendously. Later, I felt like I was able to get the ball more and do more things with the ball, so I could definitely see how it could stunt growth. Kobe was not offended by Bynum’s remarks. He even agreed to what his former center had to say. The Black Mamba responded by saying, For sure, because when you’re playing with me, you obviously have to sacrifice something. Same thing with me and Shaq. You kind of off-set each other to a certain extent. So, I mean, that’s true. When he gets back and he’s healthy, he’ll come out here and he’ll be the focal point of their attack and he’ll be getting the ball more and you’ll see big games from him more consistently. For what this side story may be worth, does anyone remember when Kobe was filmed by some fans outside of a parking lot and going off on Bynum by saying, “F***ing ship his a** out!”

Oh and do you remember that the last line of the paragraph?

the notion that he was "reining in" Kobe's shots.

Nevermind the fact that during the rebuilding then championship years Feel was EXPLICIT in stating there were times during the game when he wanted Kobe to break the triangle to find his own shots. He recognized that same creativity in Jordan and trusted them to read the defense to know when to adhere to the offense and when to break it.

guess what: whether or not Fill or MIke B was the coach during that time isn't really this point anyway, because we know Mike Brown didn't have a thing to do w/Bynum's development (credit goes to 'Cap) nor did Kobe who was and admitted responsiblity for stunting Bynum's growth and development as a player

That's the issue here, no one wants to play w/that dude...especially in the twilight of his career where he's actually SHOOTING MORE now than he did in his prime

And he was NEVER an efficient scorer to begin with, even at his absolute best...so who wants to be a part of that...Feel even said he had to bounce because "no one wants to coach an aging superstar"

season playing w/Kobe...as if to imply that Kobe made him better and that after he left LA he never had the same success he achieved playing for the Lakers (as if his degenerative knees didn't have anything to do w/his decline)

The point being that even if Feel wasn't the coach in 2011-12 and Mike Brown was, Kobe wasn't in any way responsible for Bynum's improvement that season, only stunting his development...

And ya'll plea coppin stans act like that's hard to believe a GM(s) or NBA personnel would say those things abt Kobe when it's obvious to see how someone wouldn't want to play w/him lol

I think Abbott is saying the Sessions situation was emblematic of a larger issue with the team. Here's a role-player who at least contributed to the Lakers team, and someone you'd think wouldn't be difficult to re-sign. Instead, he leaves to be a back-up for Walker on a team that was coming off one of the worst seasons ever. So if a role player ***possibly*** didn't re-sign with the Lakers because of Kobe, how can they expect a stud free-agent to sign with them?

Now, do I think the article is correct on this issue? Eh. Who the fuck knows. Anonymous sources are always shady, so I don't think anyone should treat them as gospel. It's lots of speculation and ax-grinding. Don't know how much validity there is there.

2 years vs. 1 year for a role player at his prime money making opportunity in the league actually means something.

I mean, they got legit role players to sign the following year with Jamison and Meeks. It's not quite the shaking the Laker front office to the core they want it to be.

All I'm saying is this article raises fine points but is also so tabloidy and exaggerated that it's hard to take it seriously.

yes, the money matters. but even add that and what really changes about the article? not much at all.

it's a story ripping kobe using anonymous sources. they may be right, they may be wrong. but mentioning sessions' money doesn't really make the entire thing collapse.

But to act like they didn't put a lot of emphasis on that part is kinda crazy.

I mean it says this:

"Internally, the Lakers were rattled by his departure and came to believe that Kobe was the key. It meant little as a transaction but everything as a sign of how players with options view this team."

Rattled? They went and got Steve Nash. Who, yeah, was done, but nobody outside of Phoenix knew that.

I'm just using this as an example to poke holes in the article since that's the point at which they're like, "OH SOMETHING IS AMISS!" - No, a role player got a better contract. It wasn't the start of something bigger. Kobe got old and broken.

>But to act like they didn't put a lot of emphasis on that
>part is kinda crazy.

it's a story because dude did opt to become kemba's backup and it very well might have been the moment where insiders realized they had an issue. but anyway, see the difference between:

"This article hitches it's downfall of the Lakers to Ramon Sessions."

and

>I'm just using this as an example to poke holes in the article
>since that's the point at which they're like, "OH SOMETHING IS
>AMISS!" - No, a role player got a better contract. It wasn't
>the start of something bigger. Kobe got old and broken.

do they not do exit interviews? did the agent not tell them anything? did the sessions quote about it being "different" playing with Kobe not say anything? It can be money + hating playing with a dude that led Sessions to leave. and if Sessions opted for that, others could too. When kobe was a top 3 player in the league, it's easy to overlook. when he's #40...

shit, i bet it's overdone. but if you think kobe's personality and ego are enticing to free agents, that's just silly.

And I never said Kobe's ego is enticing...that's not mutually exclusive with me saying this article is pretty dishonest and disengenous.

I'm all for criticizing players when it's based on actual evidence and not just dishonesty and selective attention.

I mean, to their respective franchises...Duncan, Dirk, Kobe. Those are the dudes that mean the most. The other dudes on the Spurs will likely retire with them (though dont count a trade out...it could happen) - but they dont mean nearly as much to the franchise.

Of course there are the Miller, Stockton, etc. of the world.

Kobe is old and not great any more. ok, we knew that

Kobe's contract sucks and makes it impossible to recruit. ok, we knew that

Kobe's not the funnest guy to play with. again, we knew that

but stuff like insinuating that somehow Nash should have been given the reigns to the offense when he never made it out of training camp healthy, or that Andrew Bynum wasn't a total contemptable turd... c'mon. Dwight Howard? He was hurt during his stint in LA, and most of how that went bad can't really be put on Kobe. Dwight's also very likely a 7th grade girl in a NBA center's body.

The playoff flameout after going back to back had a lot to do with Pau playing like ho, too.

Kobe's an annoying talent who's past his prime. No need to stretch so hard to make that point. I'm not even a Kobe fan, but this guy was clearly typing with an agenda.

Nash wanted to know if he was going to control the ball most of the time in the offense...It just simply pointed out that the PG controlling the ball was a key tenet of D'antoni's offense durimg his coaching time w/the Suns

Its still important to point out that even after D'antoni replaced Mike Brown as HC 5 GMs into the season, Nash essentially did become just a spot-up shooter playing w/Bean...that's a fact...which makes me believe there's truth to that story abt Nash's apprehension

This article even quotes Steve Nash telling Colin Cowherd that he wish there could be a happy medium between Bean jacking up bricks and the team moving the ball. So why is it hard to believe Nash had concerns abt Kobe dominating the ball prior to signing w/LA?

Is it so hard to believe Bynum asked during contract renegotiations how were they (coaching staff/laker brass I'm assuming) going to rein in Kobe?

It's comical how you Kobe stans get so butt hurt and defensive in the face of truth.

I've been saying all along that Kobe is closer to AI in terms of his actual game/shot selection/volume shooting than he ever was to MJ...it's just that *stylistically* he's more like MJ

Doesn't mean he's not great, he just doesn't have the easiest type of game to fit w/other elite players...

Oh and I know what really burns Lakers nation's soul abt this piece is when he said "if Kobe had those other intangibles LIKE THE KANG" lol

first of all this is the first time we've had a good amount of cap space to pay a star player since 1996. we've only had enough to sign role players and hand out mid level exceptions, but those players still take recruiting to close, Ron Artest is one example, Kobe convinced him to sign with LA when the Cavs were chasing him, he even met with Lebron, and yet he decided he'd rather play with Kobe.

secondly why the hell would Carmelo even consider signing with us in our current state? Kobe is why. we couldn't pay him as much as New York could, we were one of the worst teams in the league, hell we didn't even have a head coach when we were wooing him, and yet despite all that we were still on his list.

as for Sessions, i thought it was common knowledge that he opted out of the final 4.5 mil of his deal because he wanted more contract security and after disappearing in the playoffs Mitch Kupchak wasn't gonna give it to him. but more importantly, he was worried the Lakers would trade him. his exact words: "It was one of those situations I looked at like, 'If I do come back what if they trade me?' " Sessions said. "There were talks about getting Deron. They always wanted the bigger-named guy. What if I get traded to a team and it's my contract year? It was one of those things that I can't say if I opted in, wouldn't have come. They still might have tried to get him. You just never know."

so he took Charlotte's offer, and considering Kemba Walker was horrible the season prior he probably thought he had an excellent chance of winning the starting job.

and Paul George, I mean this guy can't be serious. I know Paul personally, I was with him a week before he broke his foot, he loves Kobe, idolizes the man. he never had any chance of leaving Indiana, even if he had declined signing their max extension, he'd be restricted and they would've matched any deal, and George knew that more than anyone.

lol GTFOH with this hackjob.

He didn't decide to sign with Charlotte until after the Nash domino fell and he knew for certain that that he wouldn't get a long-term deal in LA (I distinctly remember hoping he would still opt-in and be the backup PG because he played so well with the faster 2nd unit...he always had the ball in his hands on the break or screen-roll, he and the 2nd unit absolutely dominated @Houston in the 4th quarter, his 2nd game wth the team....once he became a starter, he was relegated to a spot-up shooter because of the double-post offense with Bynum and Pau)

Abbot is a notorious hack...Nash talking to Kobe about his role in a D'Antoni offense (when Mike Brown was the coach lmao), and the idea of PG somehow coming to LA even as a restricted FA lmao exemplify that.

with all the "unnamed sources", he's also a known hack job and a blazers fan.

http://larrybrownsports.com/basketball/paul-george-kobe-bryant-report-media/244972

The bottom line is David Stern ruined the Lakers when he vetoed the Chris Paul trade, that set the Lakers back years. The funny thing is the main reason it happened was because Dan Gilbert was crying about the league having another "superteam" like Miami and now he's trying to build a "superteam" in Cleveland, lol.

Gilbert is at best a silent benefactor in the deal.

(also, while they did kind of build a superteam in LA -- just a different franchise, Stern stepping in to do that was some bullshit)

Wow. ESPN's got a full court press to trash Kobe+his contract. Depicts Jim Buss and his Lakers as victims of Kobe's ruthlessness. Great PR

The tenor of the all out assault on Kobe is what surprises. Jim Buss is portrayed favorably. And lots of anonymous comment.

Lakers dueling factions make for strange stuff. The Kobe attack smacks of that. Folks are trying to duck responsibility for the coming storm

Kobe vs. The Mother Ship. He's vulnerable, and they have those kick ass radar guns n shit. Somebody better beam him up out that mess.

I predict both Kobe and ESPN will survive this urine-filled water gun fight. But the Lakers? I'm not so sure.

As Jerry West told me, the Lakers are a franchise to print money. Right now Jim Buss is just printing 20s. Imagine if he had a team.

Kobe's a bastard? Somebody call the AP.

Kobe's getting the MJ Washington treatment. If you win, you're an alpha male. Get injured and lose? You're the prick popping the pumpkin

Kobe is surely a hard ass. Mean to teammates. Arrogant. Selfish. Rich. And Jim Buss is the champion of excuse making. Tell me something new.

Do I think Jim Buss dropped this on ESPN? No way. He suffers in silence. But it's a piece with an agenda. And he's on the sweet side of it.

tanking on purpose is a disgrace to professional sports..

the fact that it's done "on purpose" doesn't mean that Sixers fans have a pass to avoid talkin about their own team and rehashing played out takes about a player and organization that is light years beyond anything the city of Philadelphia will ever fathom..

nope...

http://www.rantsports.com/nba/2014/10/21/henry-abbotts-kobe-bryant-article-is-ridiculous-reckless/

Henry Abbott’s Kobe Bryant Article Is Ridiculous, Reckless
By Anthony F. Irwin @AnthonyIrwinNBA on October 21, 2014

I’m not one for bias-based conspiracies, but no one refuses to pull punches about an athlete the way ESPN’s Henry Abbott does with Kobe Bryant.

His latest article, titled “KOBE,” where he blames Kobe for single-handedly destroying the Los Angeles Lakers from within was no different. He makes some points — few of them fair — but recklessly overlooked others that greatly weaken his already-iffy assertion. It also comes right after Kobe called him and the rest of ESPN a “bunch of idiots” for his rankings. Interesting.

Abbott is the same guy who in September 2009, took apart a fan-made highlight reel of Kobe’s best dunks. His point in that blog was that while those dunks were majestic (his word, not mine), Bryant could have instead passed the ball for better options. It makes some sense, if you ignore altogether the momentum caused by jumping over full-grown men and fouls Bryant drew by challenging players at the rim.

His trick of ignoring or seriously downplaying obvious counterpoints to make his contention seem stronger is the card-stacking fallacy and a propaganda technique. So, there’s that.

In yesterday’s article, Abbott utilized anonymous sources and cited examples of Bryant running players out of the organization. Anonymous sources tend to have an axe to grind themselves. Such sources can be one-sided as their name won’t be tied to their statements. They have nothing to lose.

Secondly, the examples Abbott uses were incredibly flawed. Let’s look at a few that stuck out the most.

Abbott points to Shaquille O’Neal. Yes, Kobe called Shaq “fat” and “out of shape.” Why? Shaq was fat and out of shape. We can’t make Kobe the villain and overlook Shaq’s own famous quote: “I got hurt on company time, so I’ll rehab on company time.” O’Neal burned so many bridges on his way out; there was a serious question as to whether the Lakers would retire his jersey. The Lakers also won two titles since Shaq left. Don’t remember reading either little tidbit in the article.

He does the same thing with Dwight Howard, who chose to take less money and join the Houston Rockets two years ago. Yes, Kobe could have done more publicly to support his teammate. Yes, Bryant’s “it’s my team” quotes to start the season probably eroded team chemistry. But when Abbott uses a source close to Howard that said L.A. was perfect for the immature big man, it again calls to question the intentions of said source.

Howard has thrived off the court in two cities whose media and fan attention pale in comparison to the madness surrounding the Lakers and he never seemed comfortable in L.A.’s bright spotlight. I don’t mean level of play — he’s been great wherever he played. I mean in terms of how he’s handled teammates and the media. Those cities and his teammates in Orlando and Houston accept Howard for the goof ball he is. Kobe and Los Angeles didn’t. That not an indictment of either side; they simply didn’t fit. Blaming one person for the entire situation is extreme oversimplification.

Lastly, Abbott discusses how Kobe has failed to recruit elite talent since Pau Gasol joined the Lakers and even went so far as to say players are actively avoiding the Lakers so long as Bryant plays there. That’s downright wrong and easily where Abbott is most reckless. He cites LeBron James and Carmelo Anthony, who both made their decisions for completely different reasons. Anthony and his wife love New York (and the $30 extra million they gained by staying) and James wanted to go home. Didn’t Abbott read LeBron’s press release in Sports Illustrated?

He also brings up Kevin Love, who was traded to James’ Cleveland Cavaliers before he could make his own decision as a free agent. Again, reread the article. He doesn’t bring up that insanely relevant fact, either.

He also fails to mention how the Lakers lost a true visionary with Dr. Jerry Buss’ passing. Nor does Abbott explain how the CBA ensures the Lakers can’t fully take advantage of their market size or revenue stream. The Chris Paul trade veto goes forgotten, along with Steve Nash’s injury issues since joining the Lakers.

But why would he mention that? Abbott had a point to make and clicks to garner, after all.

the examples the guy gave were so easy to shoot full of holes... anyone who actually knows anything about these issues would feel embarrassed for this guy rehashing such played out rubbish..

honestly anyone giving props to this article pretty much demonstrates they have no desire to look at any of this from a factual stand point and are just childishly harping on things to try and put down a player.....organization...and a city they are jealous of.
