"Washington Wizards: WIZARDS MANIA IS BACK FOR 2014-2015!"

Hey there Wiz Geekz,

We're back for another yearly installment of the Washington Professional Basketball Squad and their zany antics. That's right, folks...the WASHINGTON WIZARDS ARE BACK, BABY!

Give us our props, we looked good last year. Coach Witty didn't screw up too bad and our young backcourt looks like leaders of the future.

Lot of off-season moves I'm not fond of. Losing Ariza was big as I think he fit what we needed but not at the price point he was seeking. I think we overpaid for Igor aka Gortat but he was solid and the guy is a helluva lot more durable than that one-named Brazilian no fronts, I like Nene).

Pierce signing is a good look. Sure, he has a 10 inch vertical and he's older than Jesus Spit, the guy's a leader and he's a 4th Quarter guy that gets things done despite the miles on his wheels.

What I hope happens is Wall develops more of a jumper and continues to shift speed. He can't just barrel down the lane. People see it coming all the time. Beal's solid...I want to see some defense out of him, though.

Anyway, I won't bog down the first post with too much. It's a long first-half of the season and there's gonna be plenty of time to wax poetic about our boys. SO, WITH FEELING:

GO WIZARDS!!!

Very optimistic about the season. (It helps that our football team has managed to be out of the division running in October this season.)

We're bigger, nastier and more experienced and I have my season tix back. What's not to like?

If we can keep our defense at the same level as last year, after losing ariza, well be fine. I'm just looking for one of the young guys to make a jump.

My Vote is Rice Jr, a little scoring pop of the bench is all we need to be in the ECF this yr.

I am too excited for this season. I like this squad. 50+ wins is actually feasible now. If the Wiz could get a division title this year, I'd be estatic.

If this doesn't happen though, I blame Ernie and Randy.....

I like DeJuan Blair but he's small and he was getting his shot CAPPED last night. I watched the game on *ahem* -- a "free" service and it was airing from Chicago. Stacey King bum ass had jokes.

"Welcome to the Block party, Blair!" among other zingers.

Humphries is cool, I wanna see what he can do.

Rice Jr. was COOKING last night. If he isn't streaky, we have someone you gotta HONESTLY guard lest he light you up for a quick 10-15 in a late game situation.

Seraphin is still stiff but I'm glad we're out there setting playoff screens and not backing down. And as my mans WP noted above, Pierce punking Joakim was amazing stuff for a pre-season game.

I may fk around and get some nose bleeder season tix.

GO WIZARDS!

RIP Nats. Keep hope alive, Skins. Good luck, Caps...

But this team right here? (c) Katt

ECF or bust. I've defended ernie and witt through the low talent years but now its time to make something happen. To join the leagues elite.

The Bulls and Cavs will have chemistry issues to overcome with major changes to their starters. We gotta incorporate pierce and figure out end of game situations, but the main pieces are still here. The only roster weakness right today is backup 2 and GRJ might fit that role.

Otto has a huge opportunity to replace ariza. Its on him (and ernie) if he's still considered a bust in 6 months. I am not sure how well humphries and blair will guard stretch 4s. If pierce is moved to the 4, can otto D-up swing men and hit corner threes consistently?

I am on the fence about wall. Is all-star his ceiling or does he have the drive and smarts to go head to head with Kyrie for #1 PG in the east? He says all the right things and sounds hungry. If he is gonna reach his potential, he needs improve his AST/TO ratio and not try to match irving or rose as scorers.

8. "Nene and Blair suspended for first game of the season"
In response to Reply # 0

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/id/11665962/four-washington-wizards-players-suspended-leaving-bench

DeJuan Blair, Nene, Daniel Orton and Xavier Silas of the Washington Wizards have each been suspended for one game for leaving their team's bench area in Monday's preseason game against the Chicago Bulls.

The four players left the bench during a shoving match between the Bulls' Joakim Noah and the Wizards' Paul Pierce.

Noah was fined $15,000 for starting the altercation with 8:57 remaining in the opening quarter Monday by pushing Pierce in the chest. Pierce also was fined $15,000 for poking Noah in the forehead with his index finger.

NBA president of basketball operations Rod Thorn handed out the discipline.

A Bulls representative said Noah did not want to talk about the matter. The fines and suspensions were handed out after Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau spoke to the media following a two-hour unscheduled practice and the subject was not broached.

The NBA said the suspensions will be served by the players during the first regular-season game in which the players are physically able to play.

The Wizards open the season against the Miami Heat on Oct. 29.

That Heat game had me pissed, but maybe I expect too much of them.

I like this team a whole lot better than last seasons. I feel like they have more legit NBA players. They need to come with it at all times though, if they really want to be taken seriously.

If last night's win was a woman, she'd be the homely chick with a nice body that can make 2-3 really good meals.

It shouldn't have been that close, but Pierce was having an off night and the rotations were a bit off too.

I mean, Indiana was getting second shot after second shot attempt. What are Humphries and Blair her for if it's not to body dudes on the boards?

Nice seeing wall get mean mugging nasty streak going though.

Good win against the Pistons, but Wittman's coaching still continues to baffle me.

While our frontline was able to basically neutralize Drummond, I have no idea why Gooden and Blair didn't get some tick to slow down Monroe and lock down the paint more.

True, Jennings was on fire, but I swear they were running through the post all night.

Good to see #Wallstar put the team on his back though. Still it illustrates how badly we really need Beal back in the starting lineup. Through the first half, he was the only Wizard in double figures.

Good showing by the bench. Humphries added tremendous value and Rasual Butler was on absolute fire.

I get that folks are baffled by certain in game decisions, but overall he gets the team moving in the right direction.

he's always had no talent teams and their talent led them to crappy records. now he has a legit squad and their are no excuses for him to fail. in response they are doing what they are supposed to be doing - they are beating the bad teams while adjusting to the addition of a lot of new contributors... keeping the seat warm for when beal gets back and harvesting nuts (c) eddie jordan for when Nene's foot/leg falls off.

It would be great if they just would blow out some of these teams by 15-20 every game, but they arent there yet. That kind of success would be the sign of a team that has already made it. Not just hoping to get to the ECF but already has a legit shot at it. Last year we were glad to get to the conference semis and overachieved. now, the ECFs are hoped for, but some of that has to due with how bad the east is - not whether this team is ready to make that jump.

By the end of the season if we arent destroying these bad teams, i'd be worried. right now, witts gotta figure out what combination of bigs is actually gonna work and keep getting the most possible out of guys other teams throw away garrett temple and drew gooden. cuz thats how Witty do!

(and if wall goes from all-star to all nba, witts getting credit for that too.)

I also wonder what it's like not to have Cassell on staff any longer.

Beal is the dark horse of this team. That 1-2 backcourt is damn near unstoppable (when they're clicking)

because these point guards are lighting us up due to his constantly anticipating a pic and a switch. saw nene and gortat covering point guards one too many times this last game.

it's extremely frustrating when you see jw actually play good D for about 5 mins in the second half when you know he can do it for the whole game if he wasn't so focused on ball watching when his man is off the ball and switching when his man has the ball.

Fight through them picks. Its like he doesn't care that third stringers be having their best games against him. And for a tall PG he sure doesn't challenge many shots cause he's always out of position. Even Wittman gets frustrated with Wall's constant switching.

He does this weird thing where hell set up extremely to a players left or right, then they drive in the paint, and someone helps on D which leaves a wide open player. Its frustrating cuz u know hes quick enough to stay in front of anybody but he gives them a path toward the basket.

But he does it so often I wonder if this is something Whitt wants...

Every time there is a pressure situation, he rushes instead of just running a good play. Good shots are a must during crunch time, not rushed 3s. He's not Gilbert. He can't shoot from anywhere and make it. Just get a good shot and stop fouling down the court.

After the big cavs game - and especially the weak way in which they closed it out - a let down on the road against the bucks would have been a problem. instead, they took care of business - without nene - and keep adding those wins. Apparently pierce was showing dat veteran savvy and preaching the importance of the bucks game to them friday night. Wall already talked about them needing to have the killer instinct.

It feels good to say that this team is atop the east, even if it is early. I hope it stays this way this season.

And man we are deep team. We can switch up guys and not miss a beat. I like that.

Seraphin is finally starting to click as a player. He doesn't make as many dumb mistakes and he's learning how to pass the ball now.

Humphries has been a nice pick up.

Temple is cooling off a bit but he's still a good rotation player, and Beal has added even more to his game which is nice. His handles are stronger and he's more aggressive and he has become a nice playmaker now for the bench. I really like this kid.

MIA is only a .500 team right now (and was on the losing end of a back to back) but to blow them out after the opener, to come back and start a small win streak after losing those first two without Nene is great.

randy's next test is coming up with getting webster incorporated into the offense and figuring out how to rotate the surprising rasual butler and otto. Ariza who?

Everybody is contributing some sort of way. And I will give Randy credit, he is a good motivator of these guys. If these dudes can stay focused throughout the season, this team is dagone near unstoppable.

If we don't have anymore major duds like those two losses were, we are good. Just keep focused and this team is on its way.

Wall/Beal/Pierce/Nene/Gortat have only played 15 minutes together.

Beal's had an uneven comeback so far but here's an article about how his approach is improving: http://www.cbssports.com/nba/eye-on-basketball/24856720/bradley-beals-smarter-shots-could-help-the-wizards. I think the results will come.

I wonder if a trade is in the team's future? I love the depth but wouldn't mind flipping some of it for a more defensive-minded backup 5 or a young prospect.

nene isnt healthy enough and seraphin isnt consistent enough to really count.

this is the second team that blair hasnt been able to contribute on at all after the spurs let him go and gooden is streaky. not sure what their value would be. IMO, gortat, humphries and 3/4 a season of nene is all you can count on.

they have too many wing players with porter, butler, temple and webster, but these are inconsistent, limited, and/or injury prone assets. Webster has an untradable contract as well. Otto shouldn't be on the block anyway.

We are allergic to second round picks, but if they could somehow get one or trade for youngish back up pg to take over after miller leaves that would be cool.

Yeah, I wouldn't touch the bigs. Pierce and Otto are sacrosanct imo but if, like, Ernie could sucker Gary Neal and/or one of Charlotte's young bigs out of Jordan for one or more of the other guys.... I saw Kwame turn into Caron, I can dream.

Actually kinda nervous about this one. Ty Lawson having a career year. And we have been bad at containing short guards this year.

All I can say is....Don't let Lawson go for 30+, keep your fast breaks going, and rebound.

Keeping Lawson contained is important though. 16pts and 10ast per game is nothing to sneeze at. He can't get those numbers today.

If Nene can play limited minutes that is another boost to an already decent bench.

Double OT, losing a 23-point lead, big time play from Pierce and Wall...it was epic.

After the game, Wall broke down into tears during the post-game interview after losing his friend Miyah to cancer Monday morning.

It was just...it was amazing. Inspiring even.

In response to Reply # 0

Gutsy, because they could have given up.

Unnecessary because they were up 23.

Rewarding cause because once again, the team showed they can recover from a loss the previous night. They didn't fold.

and the post-game moment from Wall elevated him from one of my favorite players to one of my favorite human beings right now.

Still think the coaching needs a little tweaking. That big lead should not have evaporated the way it did. The team got a little loose and sloppy down the stretch, but I'll take the W.

But after last night, I got a soft spot for him now. He's growing up right before our very eyes and its cool to see.

But yeah, that game was a major slopfest by the whole team. Mental errors everywhere. Credit to the Celtics defense though. They got after it the whole game which made the Wiz pretty confused throughout. They were the aggressors last night and it showed in how the Wizards played. Good job of the Wizards for hanging through it though and coming with the W.

he works hard, has that chip on his shoulder that you need and every year gets better at his weaknesses. his defense is more consistent and now he has excellent mentors in pierce and miller. the talent was always there. What he was going to do with it was the question.

The intangibles matter so much. He's a late bloomer, keeps getting dissed and forgotten by the press and USA basketball and instead of being entitled and pouting or just brushing it off he takes it personally and elevates his game.

The next test comes when he starts getting the accolades. Will he still be hungry then?

Verizon will be full on friday night against LA. Paul will get busy... but i think defensively we'll be able to slow them down and win this one.

Then games versus utah and minny.

Three winnable games before going to miami and hosting phoenix.

I think they can ride the momentum of the last two games and start a little run before facing chicago at home on the 23rd.

the month ends with a back-to-back @ Hou and @ Dallas. Split that and its a great month.

11-2. Remember last year when we had them home game blues? Not anymore. Not this year. Verizon Center seems louder too this year. Still too many folks caught up with football. Should be more sellouts. This team is good.

On another note: Anybody know why Glen Rice Jr is in the doghouse? I heard he may have been complaining about playing time, which is legitimate. Too many players at his position. And while he's been a spotty contributor, he needs playing time to get adjusted and learn. Wiz should trade him so he can start his career somewhere else. Wittman ain't gonna play him like that.

Didn't really get into it until the 4th quarter. Not a fun game to watch and as crazy as it sounds, people expect them to beat the Jazz and win these type of games this year. I was checking football scores. Had some wagers out there. Crowd wasn't bad considering. Tix on Stub Hub were $5.

they play very strong defense and have a ton of offensive options. you can't key in on any two guys and stop them from scoring. and everyone plays intelligently. they dont have self-check players that lose the game on their own anymore.

TV ratings are up, so hopefully the city will really get behind the team after xmas and the skins are done.

Clank from midrange for 3.287 quarters, then turn Wall loose and fall short.

Randy needs a little Moreyball in his life. Only 9 three point attempts when you're trailing almost the entire way is just making things harder on yourself.

Very stoked to see these dudes play on Christmas.

Like it all just makes sense to him now. Heady plays, closing out with free throws, knows how to take care of the ball better and can have more assists than points and be good with it.

Still wish we had another reliable scorer off the bench (looking at you Webster!).

If they can keep up the defensive intensity, stay healthy and get some more consistency out of some key guys, I think we'll be able to run with the best of the league.

I just think Wall tries too hard when he goes at Rose...He blows his wad a little too early...It's as if he has something to prove. The thing is Rose didn't so much dominate Wall their last meet-up. He picked his spots and knew when to turn it on and turn it off...That's something that Wall is just now getting a handle on....

That said, I really believe the Wiz are the only team that can stand in the way of the Bulls(barring health) in the East. They are a problem...And all those No-Jacket Johnny jokes now sound pretty idiotic...

Wall is the best PG in the East (with Rose getting his game together)...I've been impressed with his game and the Wiz....

Wittman did his best last night to fuck that $ up as well for us.

McHale had the opposite problem of us. His bench went off and he didn't stick with them. Witt stuck with the bench too long which gave us nothing.

Hopefully, they've been humbled and will take on the challenge of playing 4 quarters against the great teams in the league.

Wall is gonna have to learn to be more steady though. This team thrives off his energy and when he doesn't bring it, the whole team is down.

brad was out. then nene was out. now martell is back, but pierce sits. Otto is playing more so that adds to it. very little consistency. yet, they've taken care of business mostly against bad teams and compete hard against the good ones.

Wall, beal, pierce, nene and gortat is a hell of a line up that needs time to figure out how to balance touches and who is gonna be the alpha in the 4th. It might not be next year until they really start clicking and that's only if they avoid injuries.

Unfortunately, pierce and nene are probably gone after next season and we start over again probably incorporating new starters...

2000's Detroit is the only recent title team i can think of that was this balanced and they had years together. relying on the injury prone (nene) and old (pierce) is great for changing the culture, but it does limit our ceiling a bit.

Wall, beal and Gortat are the ones that will be here in 4 years. they gotta make it their team. My title expectations are tempered, but this team is gonna be enjoyable to watch for a while.

Beal is still pretty inconsistent. He could still be trying to get his stroke back. If this team is going to break into the next level its gonna hinge on Beal's development. Wall is a point guard. He's gonna need help and Beal is eventually gonna have to step up into a consistent 20 point scorer for them to have a greater chance.

Which isn't all that common in the NBA. A steady 20ppg+ scorer.

I think Beal can do that, but he needs time to develop. And he's the only player on the roster other than Wall that really has that potential right now. And Wall won't do it because he's more of a floor general.

I mean, right now Wall is averaging 17ppg. Looking at his development, you think that's really his ceiling as a scorer? Hell no. He enjoys being the orchestrator.

As much as I hate to look too much into the future when it comes to free agency, I might have to hop on the #KD2DC bandwagon.

They are really good. If we can't beat the Spurs this week then we can't beat Atlanta. They are deep and disciplined, which is something we are still trying to be. They got a good bench and outside of Humphries and maybe Butler, everyone else is a question mark. Otto right now is too inconsistent. He still looks like he is trying to fit in which is a problem.

Miller's good for a couple of "I can't believe he's still able to get sneaky scores in the lane" moments but he's a defensive liability and they're slow getting into their offense when he's on the floor. Nothing comes easy.

That is a possible playoff matchup. I hope that they have learned something from that loss and the Spurs win because I see ATL as a real threat.

And its not just another game when you snap a 17 game losing streak. May not be playoffs but it does put another notch in my belief in them turning the corner and becoming a contender.

i think that mentality is what pierce is really trying to bring. Every night they should get a W no matter who it is.

this seems like a team that responds well to losses. the ATL beating will be something they rally around. I think the fans need to forget the loss because we've won 5 of 6 with a good shot at winning the next three. If they end up winning 7 of 9 before hosting OKC, the ATL game loses its importance as part of the narrative of the season. Especially if they pay back Durant and Wessy on ESPN.

also, ATL is finna fall down to earth soon. Their first half schedule has been pretty weak. their strength of schedule is tied with toronto for 26s. FWIW, we are 24th but we have decent shot at finishing first in the conference before the break.

the bench needs to step up this weekend. Playing beal with the second team out of necessity is not a long term solution.

the wiz looked a bit tired in the first half of the bulls game. great second half, tho. they need to come out with their second half intensity tonight, keep the turnovers down and hope the bench can maintain a sizable lead.

sad to see otto not earning his minutes...its not like webster came back and stole them either. he just isnt contributing.

I'm in a Wizards FB group that thinks Otto is going to be an all-star if Randy would just play him 35 minutes a night. I wish I saw that potential but he just doesn't seem to have that extra oomph when he's in the game. He's too inconsistent and not aggressive enough. Our 2nd team lacks scorers to be polite about it and he comes in and defers. I don't understand it.

I don't think its a minutes issue as much as it is a role issue. He doesn't play like he knows his role. I think he's still trying to get comfortable with his game and with the team. Once he gets really good at one thing then things will start getting better. He's looking like a bust though but I still got some faith in the kid.

I was sad to hear about Glen Rice Jr being released as well. Dude is dominant in the D league but can't seem to get a break for whatever reason. Hopefully he gets some run somewhere else.

he isnt super athletic so 3 point shooting, perimeter defense, getting boards, slashing making hustle plays... anything would be good.

hard for me to say he is a bust when most of that draft class is struggling... 8 outta the top 10 guys were frosh or sophs. He has a ton of time to figure this out.

As much as I love Wall, those two air balls were just awful. Wall is not a last shot closer and Wittman shouldn't ask him to. His shot is too inconsistent for that. In those situations the team should be looking for Beal or Pierce. I would rather either of them take the last shot.

I blame Witt for this loss though. The last plays in regulation and overtime were just terrible. That and we still got that same problem of the offense going stagnant. That's a Wittman issue. In order for this team to go to the next level, Wittman is gonna have to step his coaching game up or get gone. He is gonna have to adopt a better offensive philosophy outside of just taking open midrange shots and Wall being the primary playmaker.

Beal man.....Beal is cold as ice out there. I have never seen anything like him though. How are you good with the 3pt shot but suck midrange? Kinda mind boggling. He should drive more to the basket though. He's pretty decent with his layups and I think it would help him find his midrange shot.

but I still want him in the game most of the 48 min+ his mid-range might need some help but he's like a Jamaican out there, he got 5 other jobs he does well! The rebounding is bananas! The 3 pt range is nice, he is top 5 in the league, steals are nice, I mean all around he's pretty incredible. He still got some maturing to do but he's pretty dope. I'd choose him for an All Star reserve but that might be me looking with my biased rose colored glasses too...lol

They just looked gassed at this point, but played the good teams tough most of the time. Beat the bad ones most of the time and had to deal with lots of road back to backs and 4 games in 5 days.

Given the health of the team, i can't be mad at how the month has gone.

Glad to see otto taking advantage of his minutes. I also would like to see temple get some of those minutes from Miller, but if he isnt ready, he isnt ready.

Humphries and seraphin are 1.5 good bench players. They need 2-3 more guys to play well in order to avoid this kind of burn out and the talent isnt there.

real talk, all good things come to an end. old Miller, journey man gooden and former ten-dayer temple overachieved last year and its not a surprise that they can't maintain their production. Same for Butler who hit a wall this month. Blair is only slightly disappointing given that his contract is negligible (for a reason) and contenders like SA and Dallas threw him away (for a reason).

Otto was supposed to be contributing by now, but its not like EG had a slam dunk choice other than him. I like that Witt is playing him and Seraphin now... their development is the only thing that can push this team towards being real contenders in the east. The rest of the guys are has beens/never was and Webster who prolly isnt healthy enough to contribute yet anyway.

Believe it or not, I think this team misses Ariza a little bit. Team defense is pretty good but its now becoming apparent that there is no one shutdown defender on the team and Ariza was as close as it got to that. I agree that the talent is not the best, but I also think Wittman's lack of good offensive sets magnifies their weaknesses.

i wanted to see what he could do once he got the horses he needed. didnt want to blame a coach for never having any talent. they started 19-5 and looked very good to begin. its hard for me to question him when they are capable of that and of being competitive so far.

ariza is having a down year. hard to say if he'd have kept up last years career numbers again with the new contract. Wall is the best at assisting for corner threes tho, so he might be suffering from being in houston. i'd take pierces leadership and declining production over the next two years rather than ariza for the next 4 either way.

imo, they miss webster more. he could given them offensively what butler gave the team early on, but isnt ready yet.

i wonder if sam cassell is missed more than we know.

in the end, witt has this year and next to make it to the ECF finals. if he can't, we'll have a new coach to go with a marquee FA in 2016 anyway.

I give him credit for the good start. But even he has said that he has not been as good as a coach in recent weeks. While I am not faulting him for having weak moments, I do feel that this team could be much better offensively. Roaches article about Gortat is a key example of what Wittman lacks offensively. That is on him. This is what he needs to work on as a coach if he is gonna maximize their talent. I get the optimism with him, but at the same time he has to step up his game as a coach or get left.

Ehh....Webster wasn't his normal self last season and Paul Pierce is doing a decent enough job providing what Webster did shooting timely shots. Ariza was the player who slowed down Durant and did a good job of guarding the opposing team's best player. That kind of defender is sorely needed on this team right now.

I doubt it. Only if he was the one suggesting offensive sets which I somewhat doubt.

174. "Mark Jackson isn't getting the most out of Marcin Gortat (swipe):"

http://www.bulletsforever.com/2015/2/3/7970225/marcin-gortat-randy-wittman-washington-wizards-coaching-synergy-sports

Counting last night, Marcin Gortat is up to 58 total minutes played in fourth quarters dating back to December 21st. That's nearly half of what both Kevin Seraphin and Kris Humphries have totaled (103 and 101 minutes respectively) over the same amount of time. In that span, the Wizards are 12-12, a far-cry from their historic 19-6 start to the year, and only 1.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Cavaliers for the third seed in the East.

This is the same player who has a 7.8 net-rating, second to only Nene on the team and 13.4 points better than the guy he's been supplanted by per NBA.com's stats page.

Yet it's become fashionable to blame him when things go awry. Never mind the five minute drought the offense went through in the fourth quarter last night that came to an end once Gortat re-entered the game with three minutes to go. Or the one field goal they managed in overtime against the Raptors up until their defense conceded an open dunk to Beal in the waning seconds. Or on the heels of their comeback in Phoenix where they managed to cut the deficit to four points in the fourth, then proceeded to go on another five minute dry spell that inevitably lost them the game.

And that's just the past three games.

This is a classic case of Randy Wittman pounding a square peg into a round hole. The offense is designed to run out of the post, an area Gortat has historically struggled with throughout his career. But rather than catering to the strengths of his $60 million big man, Witt is putting him in positions where he's least effective. Take a look at Gortat's heat map, courtesy of basketball-reference:

Notice how much of his offense comes from the left block. Over 62 percent of Gortat's possessions ending in a post-up comes from that side of the floor, and he's converted just 27 of his 72 tries, or 37 percent, well below average according to Synergy-Sports. In fact, out of the 54 players to have attempted at least 40 post-ups from the left block this season, Gortat ranks 46th.

The offense has plays built in just to take advantage of that side of the floor. Watch Gortat swoop in across the floor and off a pair of cross-screens in the paint in an attempt to gain deep position on his man off the timeout.

More often than not, that initial entry pass will be denied, and Gortat will subsequently be pushed out of the paint. But instead of moving away from this action, John still dumps it down, clear that side of the floor, and like his other three teammates on the court, watches Gortat work in isolation. Two dribbles later, he'll spin away and turn over his right shoulder only to see the ball clank off the side of the rim.

It's an exercise in futility at this point. On the rare occasion when Gortat has it figured out and is making a quick decision with the ball, he can look unstoppable like he did in game 5 in Indiana last May. But much like Bradley Beal's propensity to dribble into long-twos, it will yield disastrous results, which is what you've been seeing for most of this season.

There's only so much Wittman can do at this point in the season. He has exactly one credible ball handler capable of striking fear in a defense, and contrary to popular belief, has a limited supply of players he can use to stretch out the floor without killing the defense. Both Rasual Butler and Martell Webster have struggled to find their footing in the new year, and while Pierce was brought in for that very purpose, it's clear they're preserving him for the playoffs.

So most of what you see from this offense comes from the inside-out, and Wittman has gotten better about disguising some of his sets. Here's one of their pet plays this season:

It looks like a standard post-up for Nene with Beal clearing out the side of the floor, but as soon as he gets into the middle of the lane, he takes a hard turn, rubs off the down-screen from Gortat, and catches the ball up top.

And once they establish that, they can fake the post-up, and go straight to Beal as they do here:

But there's only so much you can do with your back to the basket, not to mention Washington's middling efficiency when it comes to those play types. For years they've had a built-in excuse for their lack of success on the offensive end, but it's become increasingly clear that they just haven't maximized their talent. That starts with getting Marcin Gortat more involved in pick and rolls, where he's clearly been at his best.

too many guys are sick or injured after a hell of a stretch in january.

the starters know that when they leave the game the team falls behind fast and have pressed too much. without a bench, the team is not ready to make the leap i.e. avoid slumps like this especially when inferior opponents are mixed in.

this team probably is worse than it was last year so my expectations have been tempered.

They probably are pretty tired. Its not just the bench that's been less than par, the team as a whole been starting way to slow these past few games. Another ballhandler is definitely needed though. Sign Nate Robinson or something. Lol.

if temple and miller arent the answer, and Wall is ailing, they gotta start kicking tires... maybe Agent zero can give them 10 minutes. What is Delonte West doing?

just had a little pre-break slippage. now back to beating up on chumps.

wall is looking healthier and the bench is contributing again.

its all about the playoffs and getting ready for a competitive second round.

would be nice to take care of toronto tomorrow. dont want to go into any playoff series with a lopsided regular season record against.

If Rasual Butler doesnt play well, we have a hard time winning. These words should never be said.

Right now Brad Beal is on that Nene plan and you can't expect him to be around for 75-80 games. They need more than Temple, Butler and Miller.

And what is the deal with Webster???

These are rich people problems. Glad to have them. But this bench is jive killing me.

In response to Reply # 188

not sure what his value is. there are a few back up guards out there on the block - lin, calderon, reggie jackson, stephenson, but i am not sure they are worth losing kevin or cap space for. Would seraphin get more than a bad contract or high second rounder in return ? idk.

The team is at the luxury tax line and an available player and their contract may not be worth it in terms of actual impact on playoff success this year. WaPo listed Will Bynum as an example of a guy who is currently in china that might be available soon. i'd rather go the free agent route for now.

I dont think you can trade otto yet. he's a guy that is gonna take 3-4 healthy years before he shows his potential.

He is our only other asset though. That is really the only reason why I am up for trading him. At least see what he will attract. But if he don't attract much then I am cool with him still getting playing time too. Seems like all the role players on this team need 2-3 years to develop anyway.
