"Chicago Bears 2014- Wild Cards Everywhere"

Packers losing last night was great, I slept like a baby but, now in the light of day...I'm looking at the roster, preseason games and schedule and seeing 8-8 again.

Maybe some of y'all can convince me I am wrong.

8-8 is a little too panicky at this point...

I go back and forth between 9-7 and 10-6...I think our offense will be epic...And while we were very uneven on D this preseason I believe we will be better this year...Which will mean a lot when all is said and done...

To tell you the truth I think our special teams is what's making me lose a lot of sleep...We look even worse on special teams than we did last year....

Honestly, I am kinda worried about everyone's certainty that this offense will not just be good or very good but "unstoppable" or "epic" (no personal insult intended, all the commentators and talking heads seem to be 100% sure of this)

But the offensive line, while a huge improvement from the recent past, is still just above average. And the depth is nonexistent. If there are any injuries or guys just sucking, we have NOTHING off the bench.

If Cutler is getting pressured, well, we have all seen that movie before...

And obviously the defense is HOPING to be average while the special teams are trash.

I see 9-7 as a possibility if everyone stays healthy and the D is getting turnovers.

On offense the only thing I'm worried about is staying consistent at running the ball. Can our offensive line make holes for Forte to truly get off...

But Special Teams REALLY worries me....They looked clueless this preseason....

A LOT of those yards were gained in garbage time when the other team was running up the score and cornerbacks were playing prevent.

Another big chunk of the yards were hail marys on weaker teams (that bomb to jeffery comes to mind, that was like a 60 yard play, but in context, it was more about jeffrey's athletic catch than jays' prowess in the pocket)

doesn't mean its not possible for them to do again, but im skeptical.

but like they noted above, the offensive line is the key to all this. My issue is not so much injuries, but the fact that O-line will have 3 or 4 good games but then lay an egg against a "regular" defense. that is disconcerting because it shows the veterans being a little lax some games, everyone has a bad game, but when O-line has one its like they all resign to just "give up" thats terrible leadership

9-7 is probable tho.

Let's not forget that the QB who generated a good amount of those yards is no longer here.

Also, the line is average to above average but let's be real here. Mills is still learning to play and was understandably the worst guy on the line last year. Now he has been injured all preseason. Garza is literally 100 years old. Long is really good but young. Bushrod is above average but not any type of superstar or lockdown tackle. Slauson is good.

That's not the ideal foundation for consistent offensive success, which is part of the reason we are NOT consistent.

9-7 is possible but so is 7-9 or 6-10. I am truly baffled by how many people are out here saying Bears will win the division and play in NFCCG.

I certainly hope so but right now I think any reasonable hopes are pinned on a wild card.

The Packers will annihilate this defense.

Rodgers has been burying us for years. It's really getting old but not much you can say when you are as likely to get swept as you are to win one and Rodgers has ended your season 2 of the last 4 years.

It's getting really, really old.

Also not sure why you think they will have a terrible year. The NFC is looking like a dumpster fire.

It's not impossible that they could collect 5 or 6 wins just in the division. After that, go 6-4 against the rest (not hardest thing to imagine) and you are 12-4 or 11-5.

I mean...they been doing this shit. That's why I am not all in with this new regime until I see some wins against Rodgers. Without that we are not going anywhere. It's seriously on some Jordan's Bulls- 90s Knicks steez right now.

Yeah...looking like a 8-8 season all the way....U were right...Hopefully this loss will force the Bears to understand that they don't have to right to beat on their chest about anything. An embarrassing L anyway u slice it...

We can take solace that this is the first game and teams will be rusty. But those Bears turnovers (Cutler needs to chill) AND that bullshit D (they allowed a mediocre O with a struggling QB score when it was all said and done...) makes this loss truly sting and worrisome....

Horrible....

Where the fuck is the pass rush???
Fuck was jerred Allen on the edge??
And the safety play was avg at best

Offensively we were able to move the ball
But jay went jay on those 2 terrible picks

Outside of that he was throwing strikes

My only beef with the play calling
Is we threw the ball wayy too much

It was a couple of 3rd and shorts we lined up w 4 wides
FOH I need more Matt carries
He should be getting no less than 20 carries

Defense is a serious issue I don't feel the least confident
Going into the Sf game esp with this group of LBS

Man it's looking like another 8-8 year
Our D isn't even remotely close right now

Shea does not need to be starting at Sam
Bostic and Greene gotta grow up like now
Cause we can't afford to be out here with damn
Shea starting and depending on Williams to be healthy a whole season

Maybe buf is better than we thought but I'm very concerned

On a side note
Buffalo's defense looked really good

Yeah, the ceiling on this thing is 5 or 6 wins.

Niners might push 300 rushing next week.

Anyone who thought the Jets game might be a gimme...yeah, forget about that. They can easily get 200 on the ground. I mean, Fred Jackson looked like Emmitt Smith yesterday. The oldest back in the league.

Packers are going to be putting up some really crazy numbers on us this year. Lacy + Rodgers and co. against this dumpster fire.

Might have to seriously consider not watching that game.

Just saw this Bears game is on Sunday Night. Jesus Christ, it's gonna be brutal.

Bears night games are always a disaster but this should be special...

How long before Bears win their first game? Looking at this schedule I think 0-6 is a real thing.

I think we all assume Trestman survives barring some player mutiny or 0-16 but is anyone on the hot seat?

Also, everyone was always talking about let's get younger. We have the most young players who cant play of any team ever.

3 young relatively-highly drafted LB's but none of them are NFL starting quality apparently

McClellin
Bostic
Greene

Youth on the d-line

Willie Young
Stephen Paea
Ego Ferguson
Will Sutton
Lamarr Houston

Only Willie Young has shown much of anything so far.

Youth in secondary

Conte
Vereen
Mundy
Fuller
Frey

Out of these guys, the best players are average at best, except for the rookie who we have no idea about.

It's no use acquiring youth if they can't play or you can't coach them up into actual players.

I def. think this will be a down year for us...U were right..8-8 or 7-9 is def possible...And we will def. get drilled by Kap and them...But lets not go completely Debbie Downer here...lol...0-6? Shit we may as well not even watch any of these games at this point...

I still think it's up to Trestman to put a leash on Cutler in certain situations...Because our defense is going to continue to suck...But yeah...We won't be that good this year...There's no way around that...But 0-6 would be on some Doomsday shit...

It's not even that I think the Bears are THAT bad but just look at this next stretch of our schedule:

@SF
@Jets
Packers
@Panthers
@Falcons
Dolphins
@Patriots
@Packers

We just lost AT HOME, to Buffalo. Looking at that schedule, two or three wins in the next 8 games would be an act of heroism. More likely is one or two wins and if we have some injuries and bad breaks...losing all of them is a real possibility.

I'm looking at the schedule....I see losses to SF, Pats, and Falcons...

I'm willing to say we are AT THE MOMENT an 8-8 team at best....But I'm still someone who was able to look at that Buffalo game and notice one very important thing: those 13 points were scored on us because of dumb play calling/Cutler acting like his shit don't stink...Nipping that in the bud is the first part of the battle....But really, I'm less concerned with that than I am with our bullshit defense and poor special teams...

The good part? Some of the teams we are playing excluding the Falcons, San Fran, and the Pats have their own chinks in the armor as well whether on defense or offense....

In other words I'm not pushing the PANIC button jet...But this is def. a code red...

If the Bears beat the Packers I will be ecstatic but a) we never beat the Packers in the Rodgers era and b) They can be beaten with tough defense which is exactly what we don't have.

Wins on the road against Jets and Panthers are possible but hardly gimmes. They both run the ball and Cam Newton will be back for Panthers game.

I dunno. I just don't see it.

I don't know how this year goes for either team, but I'm sure you'll smoke us in Week 16. Because we're the Lions, and that's what we do.

So apparently, two starting olinemen and both starting receivers will be sitting out this Sunday Night "game".

I honestly feel bad for Trestman in advance because he is about to be the subject of a godawful beatdown and followed by a wave of negative press/fan anger.

Cutler is gonna pretty much be Dead Man Walking after this one.

With both starting WR's down I don't think Trestman will take too much of a beating by the press and fans...Such an epic beatdown would be more than understandable.....

Matt Forte fires back at Jimmy Fallon following 'Tonight Show' bit
Luis Gomez
September 13, 2014, 4:15PM

The superlatives bit on “The Tonight Show” features host Jimmy Fallon cracking yearbook-inspired “Most likely to…” jokes based on a person’s head shot. Because the bit focuses on NBC’s “Sunday Night Football” match-ups during the NFL season, the butt of this week’s jokes were Bears and San Francisco 49ers players.

Fallon joked on Friday that the Bears’ Jay Cutler was voted “Emptiest inside” due to his expressionless photo. The Bears’ Roberto Garza was voted “Most likely to make a ‘throat slice’ motion if you beat him at Scrabble.” Fellow Bear Matt Forte? Fallon named him “Most likely to pose for an R&B album cover with a rose in his mouth.” (That was probably my favorite one. Sorry, Forte.)

The Bears’ runningback caught wind of the bit and decided to come up with his own superlatives for Fallon.

"I saw the late night superlatives last night. Pretty good James. Now it's my turn lol," Forte tweeted, before joking Fallon was “most likely to be an extra in a Christian (Mingle) commercial” and “most likely to star in his own biographical film call ‘Almost Funny.’”

Forte has shown in the past that he has a sense of humor. He played himself on FXX’s “The League” and The Onion’s “Tough Season” web series.

hell of a career. best CB in franchise history. loved watching him play. kyle has big shoes to fill.

...

The Bears thrilling come-from-behind victory over the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday night didn't come without a price.

The Bears announced on Monday night that they will place cornerback Charles Tillman on season-ending injured reserve.

https://twitter.com/ChicagoBears/status/511627400925687808

@ChicagoBears
#Bears CB Charles Tillman will miss rest of season after being placed on injured reserve with torn right triceps.
4:27 PM - 15 Sep 2014

Tillman left Sunday's game with a right triceps injury — the same muscle he tore that ended his 2013 season — after shoving 49ers receiver Michael Crabtree out of bounds in the third quarter. After leaving the contest, Tillman was shown on the NBC broadcast with tears running down his face and had to be consoled by his teammates.

“I appreciate the kind words of encouragement and support from all the Bears fans who have reached out to me,” Tillman said. “I know this feeling way too well, but this isn’t the end of the road for me. As I rehab my injury, my role will transition to helping coach and support my teammates. I will be at Halas Hall and do everything I can to help our team reach its goals.”

The injury to Tillman could effectively end his 12-year NFL career. The 33-year-old Tillman signed a one-year, $3.25 million deal with Chicago during the offseason, and hinted that 2014 would be his final year in the league.

Tillman ranks third in Bears history with 36 interceptions. Tillman, a two-time Pro Bowler, has registered 738 tackles, 42 forced fumbles and eight touchdowns in 156 career games.

8-8 is looking spot on for this group.

Jared Allen has been a monumental flop. Please don't say he was good in the Jets game. He was decent against the run but awful rushing passer until he got a couple pressures VERY late. I really, really wish we could have just resigned Peppers for the money we paid Allen. If he doesnt come back breathing fire, and I dont expect him to, we are going to have one legitimate pass rusher, Willie Young.

Lamarr Houston is a nice piece, like I said, and useful against the run but an average pass rusher AT BEST. And that's okay, so long as you have other guys waiting in the wings...which we don't. I halfway wish McClellin was still playing DE.

Trestman is a gambler and that's cool but lately, he's crapping out.

Mel Tucker is just not very good. At all. His coverages and terrible blitzes and cavernous zones were embarassingly easy for Rodgers to dissect.

Our offense is good.

NOT AMAZING. NOT EXPLOSIVE. NOT ELITE.

We have a good offense. That's it. Let's dead all talk of anything above that until some evidence of it shows up in key games against elite opponents.

Likewise, we have a slightly above average football team. That's it.

Not really sure how this ship gets righted.

Hard to see a bright side to that game, even though it turned out exactly as expected BUT...

I really like Kadeem Carey as a pick, liked him in preseason and liked his game even more on the field yesterday. Hopefully we start spelling Forte a little more, it will help vary up how we run the ball, which is needed.

Also, Marshall is basically a ghost out there, I don't think he has been above 50% since the first game BUT Morgan made a couple nice plays and Jeffery looked good.

Until Marshall is healthy AND/OR we get Marquess Wilson back, there just isn't that much firepower out there.

Need to start finding more ways to get Santonio Holmes involved, and some kind of downfield passing plays. We throw a lot of comeback and hitch routes, and teams are jumping them more and more. Need to find some ways to take the top off the D occasionally

I think we are beginning to see the end of the Cutler era, Bears owe dude a lot of money but they way the coaches are talking they sound pissed.

dude basically called him out on singling out receivers and throwing into triple coverage. DAMN dude subtly going in

Cutler or no Cutler, this team's problems extend pretty far beyond the QB position.

I also don't see how they could possibly "move on"

You couldn't trade him for anything and you would take massive cap hit.

You can't cut him without a massive cap hit.

But yeah, either way, we need better coaching on offense, defense and ST.

We need a better offensive line, better QB play, more consistent rushing attack, a deep threat on offense.

Outside of these guys:

CB Jennings
LB Briggs
CB Fuller
DT Ferguson/Sutton
DE Willie Young

we need an entirely new defense with a new coordinator

You can't trade an aging 4-3 WLB coming from a terrible defense. Just not a glamorous position. You keep him or cut him.

I don't think Jennings would be as valuable to others as he is to us.

Tillman's done, so right now if we lose Jennings our senior corner is last years first round pick.

I am not in favor of jettisoning the few remaining good players as much as I am acquiring guys who can play at the spots where we need them. Youth is important but talent and skill should be the priority. We have a grip of young guys on the D now, some of whom suck, some are okay, and barely any are actually good.

Talent infusions are needed on both lines of scrimmage.

I don't know what to do at LB since we have a bunch of young guys but they struggle when they actually play, or get hurt.

Bostic- jury's out but not good so far
McClellin- bad
Greene- terrible last year, had a good game in ATL last week
Jones- promising but has barely played
Sharpton- who knows

Yep to all this^^^

Im way more concerned with our defense and play calling from our coaching staff on offense...Cutler is the least of my worries...We have to rebuild on D and go from there...

these are your NFL leaders in turnovers
Cousins, Bortles and Foles have 35 combined starts, Cutler got 111

so of course, Cutler should be the 'least of Bears fans' worries'

Jay Cutler has 7 picks and 3 fumbles lost

Matt Ryan has 7 picks and 1 fumble lost.

Cutler is what he is. If you can't protect him, he will throw crippling interceptions. At the same time, much like the Cowboys with Romo, he is the best we are going to get for right now. If the Bears get some opportunity to draft competition in the middle rounds I am all for it, but this team has too many holes to act like with someone else in at QB we would be doing better.

This defense is fucking shit. It's flat out terrible. Tannehill went 13 for 14 or some shit in the first half yesterday. Ryan fucking Tannehill.

Run defense went from historically bad to just regular bad.

Who knows how good the secondary could be if we called better plays and had a pass rush but right now they can't do much.

The pass protection is really bad. Bushrod is pretty good but Jordan Mills is flat out terrible right now. Long is there physically but seems to make a couple mental mistakes a game. The other guys are serviceable at best.

Our coach, knowing who he has at QB AND our current struggles to protect him , comes out shotgun-pass-happy against a team whose greatest strength is their pass rush!!!!!!!

It's just a failure on all levels.

Get the oline fixed and the entire defnese fixed and a better coaching job, then play whoever you want at QB. Going out to get a new QB now is unrealistic and would not result in a better team. If they take the time to build up the team, by the time we are ready to do something Cutler's guaranteed money will be up.

There is no QB savior out there. This team is the Dallas Cowboys from a couple years ago.

Consistently outcoached
Not anywhere near as talented as people seem to think
Tied to a QB who is talented but flawed

I want a pass rusher and an offensive tackle with the first 2 picks in the draft

but I'm just saying calling Cutler 'the least of our worries' is an overstatement. The way I see it, even if we miraculously managed to assemble a stud defense and a better offensive line, we would not win shit w/Cutler, because he lacks the poise (and he's a dumb ass). So...that's something to worry about.

>Our coach, knowing who he has at QB AND our current struggles

well...word is, Cut dawg checked out of a whole bunch of run plays in the first half, so much so Trestman had to forbid him from doing so at all in the second half. Granted, this is just sports radio reports, but would that really be surprising to you?

Cutler and Forte said they checked out of "a couple" running plays.

Add to that the fact that damn near every play in the first half was in shotgun and yeah, I think Trestman just called a shitload of passing plays.

Not that hard to believe. He really is not tat fond of running the ball.

The tenor around this team has me wondering if Trestman might be gone after this season if they really bottom out.

Like I said, this is an 8-8, 7-9 team but apparently the media/ownership expected a deep playoff run or something. I know it's only his second year but if the Bears go 5-11, Emery might not be able to save Trestman.

Thing is, this isn't the NBA where you tank and try to stock up talent. Being bad in the NFL usually just means you continue to be bad.

So, if we were "rebuilding" what would we do?

Jettison Cutler, Marshall, Bennett, Forte, Garza on offense?

Get rid of Allen, DJ Williams, Briggs, McLellin, Ratliff on D and let Paea leave in FA?

Team has no tradeable assets besides Alshon Jeffery or Marshall and I am assuming Jeffery is off the table?

Okay, so after doing that we would be one of the worst teams in the league without a single position group that was at least average. And would perhaps have netted one or two 4-5th round picks.

Not the rosiest picture. That looks like the worst team in the league. And that is a hard road to hoe in the NFL.

It's amazing how ineffective Jared Allen has been. I mean, dude has been a complete non factor in every game. Houston is only doing marginally better.

This team's lack of edge rushers is one of it's biggest problems.

No need for a game thread, let's be honest. Watching the Bears play at this point is just about assessing where we are at going into next year.

We suck, obviously.

Somehow, defensive line is still garbage.

Offensive line is not good.

Call me crazy...but how is it that the entirety of the discussion, after THAT game, is about Jay Cutler?

The last two QB's the BEars have faced have rolled up videogame stats with absolutely no pressure on them and with the help of a strong running game. The Bears are completely unable to get stops on the ground or in the air. This fact bothers me more than anything else that is happening.

Also, every broadcast we hear about how talented the team's offense is. But the oline is some shit at this point. Just bad pass protection. We are no different from the Falcons on O; some pretty good skill position pieces but neither the playcalling nor the blocking to make it all work consistently.

I hear you but I can't root for a 3-13 season or anything.

This is the NFL. Bottoming out is hard as hell to come back from. We need a lot more than one draft pick.

But regardless of what I think, 5-11, 6-10 is definitely on the horizon for this squad.

All I care about is addressing the inadequency of our play on the lines of scrimmage and finding a better DC. I know we are also short some talent defensively but not THIS short. Mel Tucker's NFL career is about to be over.

The way things are going, I suspect Bears will be picking INSIDE the top ten and maybe in the top 5 of the coming draft.

If there is a can't miss offensive tackle, that would be my choice but otherwise, I want to see another draft that is defense heavy.

This shit is embarrassing.

As much as I hated the old Bears team where we couldn't block for Cutler and had no one to throw to...the current "cant-force-a-punt" squad is just absolutely soul crushing to watch.

So here we are. A place I pretty much knew was on it's way after the first game.

Bears will finish somewhere between 4-11 and 6-10. They are unarguably one of the worst teams in the league.

Commentators will say how it is a team with playoff caliber talent but it's really not.

That said, we should not be the worst team in the league with this roster and we are. Easily. The worst team in the NFL.

and the high draft pick will be spent on a defensive cornerpiece

But let's be real...the Bears have been hemorrhaging defensive talent for years.

There's no reason why Urlacher isn't still on the squad/staff, not because his talent was worth being on the field...but for his intangibles and as a bridge to a cohesive unit.

Melton is tearing up the league.
Peppers isn't the scrub they made him out to be.
Hester is STILL breaking records.

You can lose one...or two of those. But the Bears let AWL of them bitches go pretty much at once. I have no sympathy.

They deserve to suck.

I am not even sure how to assess the talent currently on the defense simply because our scheme has failed so completely, it is hard to tell who is any good.

I know Jared Allen is not though. Our pass rush is so fucking terrible.

Bears undoubtedly going to lose to Minnesota, as the matchups all seem to point the Vikings way.

Still, I am hoping to see some comittment to the run as Vikings are great pass rushers and our oline is in absolute shambles. Currently on pace to give up more sacks than we did Martz's last year.

Also would hope that Bears can work MArquess Wilson into the receiving corps effectively.

Not sure what hopes I have left for the defense...get a sack or a turnover, maybe?

This is a terribly coached football team...but we all know that.

So, that aside, when will people stop talking about all the "talent" on this squad and realize that they are not that great. I said in preseason this was an 8-8 roster and I still feel that way, their shitty coaching and some injuries have just pulled that down to a 5-11 roster.

We still need defensive linemen who can actually rush the passer and play the run.

We need outside linebackers that can tackle and get off blocks or run around them. This might be Bostic, Jones, McClellin in a new system but that's still a very open question.

We need a middle linebacker that can run and cover down the field.

We need an elite safety. One. The other guy can just be okay or whatever Mundy and Conte are, but one has to be dangerous.

We need another cornerback but really we need a defensive system that puts the secondary in position to make plays and some type of pass rush.

Offense still needs a speed receiver (Bye, Devin Hester© idiot bears fans), and 2 or 3 offensive linemen who can actually play.

Kyle Long is great
Bushrod is slightly above average
Jordan Mills is a backup
Michael Ola is a backup
Garza needs to retire yesterday
Slauson was average but got injured, so now who knows

So, that's one really good guard, one slightly above average tackle and three guys who shouldn't be starting. And people actually wonder aloud why the offense doesn't work?

Oh and the coaching is just abysmal.

Where to from here? Fire Trestman and hire who? What do we look for in the draft? Free Agency? Who do you want gone and who retained?

Good news is really the Bears are with a heap of other teams who have some talent on the roster but are ultimately pretty terrible: Panthers, Falcons, Bears, Vikings, Browns, Giants, Texans...which means that lots of other teams are in the exact same position and the route back to contention could be swift with a solid plan and a good amount of luck

Stunner from Chicago: Bears starting QB Jimmy Clausen this week, per source.

From ProFootballTalk:

Looks like the Bears are protecting Cutler against an injury that would make it harder to cut or trade him in the offseason.

Like I said, he is gone. They will cut Jay in offseason and pursue whichever Eagles QB Kelly decides not to keep.

My guess is Sanchez on a two year contract.

Amazingly we are going into next season with no coaching staff in a particularly bad year for head coach prospect.

No quarterback or proven backup. Cutler is clearly done as a Bear after this last move.

Brandon Marshall is gone too. Yup. Our only proven wide receiver will be the relatively unproven Alshon Jeffery.

All this to go along with the worst defense in the NFL for two years running and an offensive line that is flat out terrible.

I have to think Chicago could EASILY be the worst team in the NFL next year.

Damn, I guess everyone really was believing the hype that this would be a good year because this thread is a graveyard, even as the Bears are on the brink of sweeping changes the likes of which I don't think we have seen.

Cutler gone. Marshall gone. Trestman and staff gone. Emery might be gone. Tillman, Briggs, Garza, DJ Williams, departures a foregone conclusion. Jeffery due a resigning that now looks less appealing to all parties than it did a year ago. Everyone has to be hoping and wishing Allen retires. Will Forte and Bennett want to be on this squad next year as it heads into a long-term scorched earth rebuild...

I understand trying to pick between Sanchez and Fitzpatrick for next years opening day starter is not very exciting but we can't even get a decent discussion going about which coach to hire?

Never thought I would be envious of Redskins fans. Maybe Bears fans, myself excepted, just have better stuff to do.

Jay Cutler expected back with Bears in 2015, with new coaching staff
Jason La Canfora
CBS Sports NFL Insider
December 21, 2014 07:09 AM

The benching of Bears quarterback Jay Cutler sent shockwaves around the NFL last week, but is hardly an indicator that he won't be back. While head coach Marc Trestman is all but certain of being fired next week and GM Phil Emery could meet the same fate, Cutler’s hefty contract, his recent performance and other factors have created a climate where the Bears are effectively stuck with Cutler for two more years, numerous league sources said.

Cutler has $16 million guaranteed on his salary for 2015, and on March 13, another $10 million of his $16 million salary in 2016 becomes fully guaranteed. Cutler has no inclination to alter his contract in any way to facilitate a deal, sources said, and he is waiting to see how the organization restructures for next season and who he will be working with on an offensive staff.

So Cutler is effectively guaranteed of making $32 million the next two seasons, on top of the $22 million he made this season, and a sampling of a host of executives and personnel people revealed a climate in which a trade would be viewed as just about impossible. Cutting Cutler costs $15.5 million and while the contract has offsets, which would allow the Bears to recoup money based on what Cutler would earn elsewhere, sources said that Bears ownership is nor prepared to explore those options.

The decision to bench Cutler came from Trestman, and not above, and is not an attempt to keep him healthy to facilitate a trade (in fact, as the backup quarterback Sunday against a Lions defense that could savage new starter Jimmy Claussen, it’s entirely possible Cutler ends up playing due to injury or otherwise).

With a reputation as a coach killer, finding coaches to work with Cutler may not be easy, either, but Mike Shanahan, who drafted Cutler in Denver, would have interest in reuniting with his former pupil, according to sources with knowledge of the situation, and he and Cutler maintain a very close relationship.

Other members of Shanahan’s direct coaching family tree include his son, Browns offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan and Ravens offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak (the Shanahans would not work together again, as they did in Washington, according to league sources). Arizona defensive coordinator Todd Bowles is expected to be asked to interview for the job.

Some have linked former Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh, the outgoing coach in San Francisco, to this job, but sources said his price tag would likely preclude a Chicago return, and the way the organization is structured in terms of final say and roster control would have to shift considerably as well.

As for Emery, he as informed members of his staff he believes he has an opportunity to retain his job -- it has become a foregone conclusion in that organization that Trestman will be gone -- but, with the entire organization under review by ownership, that remains to be seen.

throw money at the defense in hopes of fielding a professional unit. i've never witnessed a defense this pathetic in my lifetime. 'twas the root of our problems this year, imo. shit needs to be revamped 100%.

improve/tweak the offensive line.

commit to the ground and ask jay to throw no more than 25 times a game.

if the above situation fails you blow it up.

Bears receivers have been dropping passes all year. Forte is 2nd among RBs in dropped passes and Bennett is first in dropped passes by TEs.

So, it's over...

I predicted 7-9 but clearly we were even worse.

Emery and Trestman fired.

Let the Mark Sanchez era begin?

Looking at this division right now, the Bears are going to be the worst team in the league for a while. Cutler is gone, it seems, does anyone think Marshall comes back?

It wasn't just that it didn't work out, it was HOW it didn't work out.

He made every bad decision possible regarding RG3 and may have ruined his career in the long run.

He drafted Kirk Cousins in the 3rd round when the team had just mortgaged all their picks for a QB and had a roster full of holes.

He blew it as far as handling media and locker room personalities.

He didn't win.

If he becomes the Bears new coach, we will pray for the Trestman years to come back.

he just gotta bring in a good Defensive Coordinator...

Shanahan might be one of the only coaches willing to keep Cutler since he drafted him and all...so then he can focus on defense in the draft.

People attack him for what happened in Washington forgot how horrendous that cap situation was. I don't think he was interested in giving away all those picks for RG3 either. It was a battle with ownership that he lost.

Shanahan would be a perfect fit for you guys...he'll turn the bears into a playoff team within a season...

The Bears have already come out and said they have no interest in Shanahan. Don't know how the new Gm feels, but George McCaskey has already said no to Shanahan.

In response to Reply # 93

Early Bears’ Coaching Candidate Breakdowns
By Dan Durkin
December 31, 2014 1:00 PM

CBS) At the outset of Monday’s press conference, Bears chairman George McCaskey and team president Ted Phillps said the search for finding a new general manager and head coach was underway. While a timetable wasn’t shared, they both conveyed a message of pragmatic urgency.

“We do not have a timetable,” McCaskey said. “We will act quickly if necessary to get the people we want, and we are prepared to wait if necessary to get the people we want.”

Phillips went on to say that the process was initiating on Monday with the assistance of Ernie Accorsi, whom the Bears brought on as a consultant from the NFL’s Career Development Advisory Panel.

“We have a plan in place,” Phillips said. “And after this press conference we’re going to be ready to go. We’ve already received numerous inquiries from a number of people — don’t think it’s appropriate or fair to any candidates to start talking about any individual candidates today. That’ll unfold as the process moves along.

“We’re going to proceed with a sense of urgency. There is no timeline, as George mentioned, but we do have a sense of urgency and we will be prepared to act when we get the right candidates in place.”

Ideally, the general manager would be hired prior to the head coach. But Accorsi had already advised McCaskey and Phillips that they shouldn’t make that a strict rule in the selection process.

“The conventional timeline is to hire the general manager first,” McCaskey said. “But Ernie has already advised us that if we see the right guy out there as a head coach we need to be prepared to move quickly to get him.”

Given that many of the head coaching candidates are preparing their teams for the playoffs, names of candidates have started to surface.

Let’s take a closer look at some of the early names.

– Todd Bowles (defensive coordinator, Arizona Cardinals): Bowles, 51, has been involved in the NFL in various roles for 26 years. He played safety in the league for eight seasons (1985-1993), spending the majority of his career with the Washington Redskins, learning from coaches like Richie Petitbon and Larry Peccatiello.

In 1995, Bowles joined the front office of the Green Bay Packers as member of their player personnel department for two seasons. Bowles got his first NFL coaching job with the New York Jets in 2000 and has remained in the league as a coach every year since, ascending from a secondary coach to a defensive coordinator and had a brief stint as a head coach.

In 2011 with the Miami Dolphins, Bowles was promoted to interim head coach after Tony Sparano was fired. Bowles presided over the final three games of the season, in which the Dolphins went 2-1.

In 2012, Bowles moved on to the Philadelphia Eagles as a defensive backs coach, and he was promoted to defensive coordinator after Juan Castillo was let go after the sixth game of the season. The Eagles went 1-9 over the final games, allowing a league-high 32 points per game over that span, but the truth of the matter is the season was already lost and Bowles was set up to fail. Bowles runs a hybrid front scheme that was drastically different than Castillo’s wide-nine and simply didn’t have the time nor the talent to properly install it.

Bowles has spent the last two seasons in Arizona, where the Cardinals defense has thrived. In 2013, the Cardinals finished the season as the league’s best against the run (84 yards per game), sixth in sacks (47) and points allowed (20.3).

In 2014, the Cardinals finished fifth in points allowed (18.7) and were the first team to hold Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray under 100 yards. Just last month, Bowles was given a contract extension through the 2017 season.

Bowles is the epitome of a week-to-week coordinator, who tailors specific schemes to beat that particular opponent. He adapts to his available talent and uses a variety of fronts — two-, three- and four-man lines — as well as a variety of sub packages that mix traditional nickel and dime packages with “big” nickel and dime packages that use safeties instead of cornerbacks.

The Bears may have to act fast if they want to secure Bowles’ services, as Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic reported that every team with a head coaching vacancy has requested an interview with Bowles.

To summarize what's out there, every team with an HC opening has contacted #azcardinals re: interviewing Bowles, per source.

https://twitter.com/kentsomers/status/549991461862002688

– Adam Gase (offensive coordinator, Denver Broncos): Gase’s ascension as a potential head coach parallels Peyton Manning’s arrival in Denver. At 36, Gase has 12 years of experience in the NFL. Prior to arriving in the NFL, Gase worked with Nick Saban at LSU as a graduate assistant and participated in recruiting activities.

Gase got his NFL start as a scouting assistant with the Detroit Lions in 2003. His coaching career started with the Lions in 2005 as an assistant. In 2007, he moved up to a quarterbacks coach role working under Mike Martz, so he has familiarity with Air Coryell vertical-passing principles.

Gase was the Broncos’ quarterbacks coach in Manning’s first season in Denver and worked under then-offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, who is now the head coach in San Diego. Thus, he’s familiar with Manning’s tried-and-true “levels” concept as well as the mirrored and mesh route concepts that Manning has made his Hall of Fame career off of.

Manning is clearly the primary factor of the Broncos’ offensive dominance, but any coach who has the opportunity to work with Manning has a leg up on the rest of the league.

The Broncos’ system is rooted in simplicity and relies on Manning’s ability to pinpoint the weakness of the opposing defense on that particular play using a “check with me” system at the line of scrimmage. In that system, the quarterback is given a package of plays to choose from and must read the defense in order to chose the optimal play.

Gase was promoted to offensive coordinator in 2013. Over the past two seasons, the Broncos finished first in total points last season (37.9) and second in total points this season (30.1). Consequently, Gase was coveted by the Cleveland Browns last year for their head coaching job, but he felt that the timing wasn’t right. This time through, it appears to be a different situation, as he’s also received interview requests from Atlanta and San Francisco in addition to Chicago.

– Dan Quinn (defensive coordinator, Seattle Seahawks): Quinn, 44, has been a defensive coach for 21 years, with 12 years of NFL experience. His specialty is working with defensive lines.

When Gus Bradley accepted the Jaguars’ head coaching job, Quinn moved into the defensive coordinator role, where he’s been the last two seasons. Over that span, the Seahawks have finished No. 1 in points allowed, allowing 14.4 per game in 2013 and 15.9 in 2014.

The Seahawks’ dominant defense carried them to a Super Bowl championship last season and earned them the NFC’s No. 1 seed this season. Quinn has had the fortune of learning from both Bradley and Pete Carroll, who run a stripped-down Cover-3 scheme that thrives on simplicity, speed and stellar personnel in the secondary.

Quinn’s scheme is a 4-3 base, but they also play several 3-4 concepts. The essence of the defensive front is to use three space eaters along the defensive line with a speedy pass rusher on the weak side — known as a “LEO” — who benefits from the extra attention given on the inside to quickly bend the edge in single-block situations.

But the critical components to the scheme are the secondary players, where the Seahawks have arguably the league’s best cornerback (Richard Sherman) and free safety (Earl Thomas). Even though they’re a zone-based defense, the Seahawks press with their corners with outside technique, funneling everything back to the middle.

With three trustworthy deep defenders, the Seahawks have the best of both worlds, as they have four underneath defenders, forming an eight-man front that can react downhill against the run as well as congest intermediate passing zones. Quinn will succeed in a situation where a team is committed to finding the right pieces to allow his scheme to truly flourish.

The Bears will interview Quinn soon, according to reports.

– Gary Kubiak (offensive coordinator, Baltimore Ravens): The 53-year-old Kubiak has 30 years of NFL experience, nine as a quarterback for the Broncos and 21 as a coach. Kubiak has served as a quarterbacks coach, a coordinator and has eight years of head coaching experience, all with the Houston Texans, where he had three winning seasons and two playoff berths. This season, Kubiak has coordinated the Ravens offense, which finished eighth in both scoring (25.6) and rushing yards (126).

Kubiak spent a large portion of his coaching career with Mike Shanahan and is well versed in a zone-running scheme. When it’s run properly, not only do the quarterback and running back sell the play, but offensive line works in concert to give the defense the same picture for the first few seconds of the snap regardless if it’s a run or pass. Off of this action, Kubiak runs a boot-passing game, which Bears quarterback Jay Cutler had success running in Denver.

This season, Ravens running back Justin Forsett — who also played for Kubiak in Houston — finished fifth in rushing despite not being the team’s primary ball-carrier to start the season. With a boot-heavy passing game, Kubiak cuts the quarterback’s reads in half, giving him a clearer picture and fewer defenders to read in the progression. Thus if the Bears were to keep Cutler next season, this scheme could be a fit, as he works best on the move with simplified selections.

The Bears have expressed interest in Kubiak, according to Dan Pompei, but they don’t have an interview lined up as of early Wednesday afternoon.

Bears have no interest in Rex Ryan
Posted by Mike Florio
January 3, 2015, 8:12 PM EST

Thirty years ago, Buddy Ryan served as the architect of one of the greatest defenses of all time: The 1985 Bears. Now that the Bears are looking for a new coach and Buddy’s son, Rex, is looking for work, it seems to be a perfect match — especially with Chicago surely hoping to find someone who is the opposite of Marc Trestman.

But the things that make the most sense are often the things that have the least chance of happening. Per a source with knowledge of the situation, the Bears have no interest in Rex.

It’s unclear why the Bears aren’t interested. Former Colts, Browns, and Giants G.M. Ernie Accorsi has been working as a consultant, and it’s possible Accorsi has advised against Buddy’s son. Regardless, Rex won’t be the coach of the Bears, barring a dramatic change of heart.

Are you serious.

We have the leagues worst defense. By far.

No pass rush, no run D, a patchwork secondary.

Our oline performed at the level of the Mike Martz days. We have 2 proven receivers, one coming off serious injury and nothing behind them.

Why would we pick a QB, let alone one who almost certainly needs to come into a positive situation, not a dumpsterfire of a roster with a loud, impatient fanbase in a big city spotlight.

I think Winston will be a pretty good player but no, please, no.

I'm pretty much sold on Dan Quinn unless he is going to come in and do some dumb shit like cut marshall and cutty.

We have some of the pieces to run his scheme already, he has a great track record and his players seem to like him. I'm with it.

Seems like they want that Saints model, bad.

Thats a fine strategy, but you need a seriously good offensive mind (like Sean P) to pull that off and a excellent quarterback.

The coach will tell me all I need to know about cutlers future, but this is the same strategy they had with Emery.

#Bears source: Team really liked Ballard, but wanted to break from the past, and Pace better articulated big picture, multi-year plan.

I hope that doesn't mean a tankfest and switching to a 3-4...

I think I will know everything I need to know from who they target as coach. If it's not Quinn, okay but I am not sure about Bowles and do not want Gase.

The Bears are in a really tough spot. Years (many, many years) of bad drafting means they will need years of good drafting to get out of this mess.

On the coaching front I would be happy with either Quinn or Bowles.

They also need to get something out of those young players we DO have.Especially on defense.

McClellin
Jones
Bostic
Ferguson
Sutton
Young
Houston
Fuller

Not expecting them all to be Pro Bowlers or maybe even any of them, but they need to be made into a mix of GOOD players.

Tanking and starting from the ground up never works in the NFL. You gotta identify and coach up some of the talent you have.
