Sources: Keith Smart discussing role with Miami Heat coaching staff
Former Golden State and Sacramento coach Keith Smart has emerged as a strong candidate to join the Miami Heat's revamped assistant coaching staff, league sources told Yahoo Sports.
In the wake of a shakeup that resulted in the reassignments of Bob McAdoo and Ron Rothstein, Smart, 49, and Miami are discussing a role on head coach Erik Spoelstra's bench, sources said.
David Fizdale will continue as Spoelstra's top assistant, and ex-Heat player Juwan Howard will move up to an assistant coaching job after a season working in player development, sources said.
Spoelstra has advanced to four straight NBA Finals as Miami’s coach, winning two titles. The Heat lost LeBron James to Cleveland in free agency this summer.
Rothstein and McAdoo had been on Miami's staff since president Pat Riley's tenure as coach.
Rothstein, 71, had been nearing the end of a long coaching career and will likely move into a basketball operations job with the Heat, sources said.
Smart's head coaching career, including a brief stay as interim coach in Cleveland in 2002-03, includes a 93-170 record as head coach. He's been out of coaching since Sacramento let him go following a 28-54 record in 2012-13.

the top eastern conference teams are either heavily affected by injuries or relying on previously injured players to be healthy so you don't really know how that's going to shake out.

as far as the OP, it's spo putting his own stamp on the staff and getting his own ppl in there. they've been transitioning riley's guys -- rothstein, askins, mac -- out for a few yrs now. fiz is still his right hand and smart's a good add.
top 4 wouldn't surprise me either. i'm expecting a monster year from bosh.
