"Tom Thibodeau doesn't have the IQ to coach offense "

He really teaches his guys how to get after it. Knows how
to inspire and speak to young men. Gets them to play with
fire and passion.

But I don't think he has the intelligence to grasp the
nuances of professional offensive basketball. He doesn't
really grasp timing or angles.

He's an hell of a motivator, though. His players really
love him.

He needs to hire someone with the intellectual chops to
run an offense.

my main knock on him is that he has never been able to handle the "stretch the floor with shooting bigs" type basketball that the Magic beat the Cavs with in the playoffs, and has basically become the model of NBA basketball offense.

and years later, he never adjusted to that.

the offense on his teams was so bad, that good players actually looked bad in them. that's just total disregard.

Rafer Alston and Courtney Lee was the starting Orlando backcourt, no team with that is miles better than anyone.

Orlando had a couple favorable matchups and Mickael Pietrus to take some defensive work from Lewis and Hedo, and SVG took Mike Brown to school with them.

Cleveland got "Jordan Rules"-ed and had no answer.

The Cavs backcourt was Mo Williams and Delonte West.

And this was healthy, completely unstoppable Dwight.

And Rashard/Turkoglu were killer shooters, matchup
nightmares.

Cavs were a full tier below in overall talent.

I understand why you want that to to be true given your very public Mike Brown agenda

But its not

The biggest talent differential in that series was the one bewteen the coaches

emphasis on *team*. It was the height of the
Stan Van Gundy system, prime Dwight Howard era.

people forget how much Dwight shit on Cleveland in that
series. Dude had like 42/14/4 in the closeout game.
Turk and Rashard were both still playing at a very high-
level...*both* of them averaged around 18 that series.
Cleveland had no defensive answer for both of them, as so
much attention was drawn to Dwight, who was grandiose in the paint.

Pietrus was also an absolute killer in that series...always
hit big shots and averaged like 14/15 coming off the bench.

Alston even played big and more/less neutralized the tepid
Mo' Williams.

Lebron went hero-ball mode to keep them in that series. Had like
three +40 point games in that series just to keep them somewhat
competitive. Finished that series with 38.5/8/8 while getting little
help from an inferior team.

Orlando was the better team by the naked eye test alone, but the
analytics demonstrate that point with real clarity.

Those Cleveland teams just weren't elite at the end of the day.
Everyone can pretty much recognize that.

Cleveland never was able to adjust to the 1-5 screen roll and dive, stretch 4 that Orlando was using all series. That matchup was essentially the worst one possible for that Cleveland team which otherwise was a top 3 rebounding % and top 3 fg % against team.

In response to Reply # 0

I don't think people said Tony Dungy didn't have the IQ to coach offense, but that he just had a different philosophy that was geared towards defense.

I think of Thibs the same way. His defense creates offensive opportunities.
But I give him credit for allowing his assistants to develop the offense through Noah last season.
I know last year they were looking to adopt the Spurs model of ball movement.
It'll be interesting what he does with more offensive weapons this year in Gasol, McDermott and Brooks.

In response to Reply # 7

Even though Manning played like mostly shit in that
Superbowl, was about the 8th best player on the field.

They also said Gruden's IQ is what won Tampa Bay that
Super Bowl. Gruden had about as much to do with that
Super Bowl as Barry Switzer did that Cowboys Superbowl.
That team got shittier the longer Gruden was with them.

And the funniest part about the Dungy thing is that he was a
college QUARTERBACK.

In response to Reply # 10

Dungy's whole coaching style through the ENTIRE playoffs that year was a CLINIC on how to adjust in football

each level of the playoffs he had Peyton and 'em responding to each test:

Round 1 - vs. the Chiefs: Colts had one of the worst run defenses in the NFL, and they were up against one of the best running teams in the NFL

Round 2 - vs. the Ravens: low scoring, field goal fest, Parcells-bait game where Peyton could not "Peyton" his way through the game. no 4th down heroism. get the points.

Round 3 - AFCCG vs. the Patriots: Peyton was playing like absolute shit in the first half, damn near looking like he did against the Seahawks. focused on defense, Brady started the first of many bouts of "hero/Favre ball" that sunk him in later big games and it ends on a FUNBALL in the end. the truest test of the Colts in the playoffs in the Peyton Era.

Round 4 - Super Bowl vs. the Bears: Almost a repeat of the Ravens game except the Bears offense was even less of a problem.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Can facilitate for others....none of their players w/the exception of Jimmy Butler (I guess) can create their own shot which is why ppl felt like they shoulda kept Nate Robinson

Even in D Rose's absence they didn't have a pass-first backup PG (Nate/John Lucas Jr.)

The center is the team's best passer

But

Now that they have Gasol, who also is an excellent passer, along w/Noah, I think you might see more fluidity and more ball movement in their offense instead of letting D Rose shoot 25x per gm...

Their offensive rating was actually better in 2010-11. They shot worse from the field (except behind the arc but they shot fewer 3s) , turned it over just as often, got to the free throw line less. They killed it on the offensive glass but did they actually get better or make it more of a priority or were they just in better shape than other teams thanks to Thibs' drilling and outworking the other guys?

You've gone too far OE. Thibs forgot more basketball than all of us know. You think coaching is easy as it is in the YMCA. He's a professional basketball coach for a reason. No NBA franchise lets anyone coach the team. Look at his winning record as a coach and tell me that he honestly lacks the IQ to coach offense. Bulls fans point to their offensive ranking each year as proof of his ability to coach offense. NBA 2K fucked up a lot of people's heads and this is proof.

legit post scorers in gibson and gasol, all of their bigs can pass, they've got like 5 or 6 guys who can shoot the 3, rose and butler are each gonna give them 6 or 8 easy ppg apiece in transition, they get to the free throw line.

they've got all the makings of a true, sustainable top 10 offense.

i put this in the season post earlier (from Z-LO DA GAWD's latest column)

http://grantland.com/the-triangle/death-to-ringz-chris-paul-and-the-nbas-broken-narrative-of-success/

10 Things I Like and Don’t Like

1. Chicago’s New Choices

Chicago is eighth in points per possession, and it was much higher before laying an egg against the Pacers over the weekend. A Bulls team with a top-10 offense should frighten the rest of the league.

Pau Gasol isn’t a dominant scorer anymore, but he’s a legit low-post option who defenses must respect, and his passing and post scoring open up new options for a polished Bulls attack. Behold this masterpiece against Toronto:

Holy crap. Look at everything that happens here: a cross screen for Gasol that is a newly dangerous action; a quick “zipper” pick-and-roll for Jimmy Butler, playing out of his mind so far; a scripted action from Gasol, called “shorting,” in which the big man not involved in the pick-and-roll zooms up the lane, catches a pass from the ball handler, and kicks to the shooter open on the weak side. Derrick Rose finishes the job with a corner 3.

That kind of versatility was just not available to any prior Rose-era Chicago team.

(al gentry runs the warriors' O)

on a serious note tho, kerr's put together a really solid staff. gentry's always run innovative stuff, and he's using curry in some of the old nash sets, while adams has had a tremendous impact on the D (3rd in the league in DRtg, abt 4 pts/poss better than last yr)

a recent article on the adams effect w/ some good steph quotes (paul went 6-15 in that next game btw)

http://www.ibabuzz.com/warriors/2014/11/05/warriors-stephen-curry-assistant-ron-adams-holds-higher-standard-championship-caliber-defensively/

OAKLAND – Warriors point guard Stephen Curry will guard the Los Angeles Clippers’ Chris Paul tonight after having garnered praise for his defensive play to start the season.

Sacramento’s Darren Collison was 4 for 12 from the field. The Los Angeles Lakers’ Jeremy Lin didn’t make a field goal in six attempts. All-Star Damian Lillard was held to 4-for-18 shooting in Sunday’s win at Portland.

What’s changed for Curry this season has been the presence of assistant coach Ron Adams, a longtime veteran of NBA coaching who’s known for his defensive excellence.

“Just holding me to a higher standard,” Curry said of Adams’ influence. “Obviously we watch a lot of film and talk a lot about just how we’re supposed to see that end of the floor, what it means if I’m able to do what I’m supposed to do every single night for our team’s success.

“It doesn’t matter how many points I score. He seems to find that one or two things that I can do better on the defensive end after every game that kind of knocks you back into reality a little bit. You can always get better, and I have to be to be a championship-caliber point guard and for us to try to get where we’re trying to go.”

Adams has resonated with players including Curry with his quotes of the day, including one attributed to Michelangelo that says, “The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it.”

Curry last season often wasn’t asked by coach Mark Jackson to guard top opposing point guards, a strategy that caused controversy within Jackson’s own coaching staff. Curry is now getting that challenge, as he said he’ll get motivated to guard Paul tonight.

“Yeah, because if he plays well, it’s on me and vice versa,” Curry said. “You’ve got to be locked in and focused and do my part as a part of the game plan on defense and understand what we’re trying to accomplish.”

Or would we say that "he barely coaches the team?"

Because I've seen Kerr coach, and he openly asks
players for help and shit, gives zero actual advice
in the huddle

The essentially play street ball. They just happen to
be LOADED, probably the deepest, best team in the league.

Mark Jackson didn't have this depth or health, and still
did a great job...and he turned Steph into a PLAYMAKER.

We did this (said he barely coached) with Mike Brown, btw.
We blamed him for the Cavs teams not winning the 'chip, when
they were a bunch of terrible bums outside of 'Bron and
Lebron has openly credited Brown with making him care about
defense

And he didn't win with the Cavs, who can barely win
with two additional top 5 players. We blamed Brown.

I've given Marc Jackson plenty of credit for completely changing the mentality and culture of that entire team as well as developing Steph and Klay....but to act like Kerr and co. aren't utilizing those strengths extremely well (esp putting Klay near the paint on his first touch) but rather just playing "street ball" is laughable.

In response to Reply # 53

As a Warriors fan I thought Jackson did a good job and I like what Kerr is doing so far so I'm not really interested in talking about who is better but it's completely obvious that the offense this year is way more regimented and complex.

Jackson gave Curry a lot of freedom in the offense and had very few sets. The Warriors would run some simple early actions like a high pick and roll or pin down to get Klay open but if that stuff failed it was basically improvisation time. There was a reason the Warriors were dead last by a long way in passes per game last year.

It's early but the Warriors are a lot more sophisticated than in the past, there is way more movement and action in the offense this year. There are second and third actions going on if the initial play doesn't work. Kerr and Gentry have the Warriors running way more plays on offensive sets.

If you're really trying to suggest that you watched the Warrior's offense last year and this year and think this year's version is playing street ball, that's basically an admission that you know nothing about basketball.

73. "He's a defensive minded coach"
In response to Reply # 70

There are very few coaches in this league who are able to make their teams into elite defensive AND offensive machines or vice versa. Most coaches have to pick the side their team is more capable of and rely on that. A team without the league MVP two years a row is bound to struggle on offense, but let's take a look at the 2010-2011 Bulls roster, which was the deepest it's been in the Thibs era before this year:

Bulls 12th in FG%
Bulls 9th in ASTs
Bulls 15th in 3PM
Bulls 7th in ORB
Bulls 19th in PPG

That's above league average in everything but 3PM and PPG. This is with Keith Bogans as the starting shooting guard. The Bulls were 27-2 when Bogans scored 6 points or more. Read that again. To have a 62-20 season with arguably the league's worst starting 2 guard at the time is pretty damn impressive.

The PPG is low because Thibs is a defensive minded coach. He's shown in the past two seasons that his teams win best when they get into grind it out, low scoring games. He's not an offensive minded coach and he doesn't need to be.

What you're seeing this season is that Thibs actually has offensive weapons he can use. He's still a defensive minded coach and that's how the Bulls will become true contenders, but he finally has the talent, as well as enough offensive chops to run a respectable offense. I see where you're coming from, and have thought the same in the past. Early in the season though, it's looking like it was a lack of talent instead of Thibs' IQ that limited the Bulls' offense.

In response to Reply # 76

You're acting like this is the first time somebody on OKS has called Thibs' offense into question. Bulls fans on here have been criticizing his offense on and off for years now. The difference is we've also been blaming GAR Foreman and Paxson for not giving Thibs a deep roster. When he had a fairly good roster the offense was decent. Now that he has a strong roster with offensive weapons the offense looks good.

So here's my question,

Q: Are you now willing to concede that Thibodeau has the IQ to coach offense, he just had to be given more offensive weapons to show it?

Answer the question

I've got my own beefs with Thibs, such as dude overplaying his players and wearing them out by the time the playoffs hits...That's more of a concern...

But Thibs is showing that given the weapons he can def. coach on the offensive side of things...I don't know if those stellar offensive numbers will hold up the entire season for the Bulls...But right now Thibs is proving the premise of this thread very wrong...

Again, the bigger concern is dude leaning too heavily on his players. Right now Jimmy Butler is being beat like a mule...Too many minutes...That's a real concern, not Thib's lack of offensive prowess....

He has 2 of the 5 best passing big men in the game,
one of whom is one of the 5 best scoring bigs in the

He has the "best 2-way shooting guard" in the league

A league MVP point guard on occasion

Apparently Golden State didn't pass the ball before
last year, and Klay Thompson did nothing but shoot
threes.

Weird, I saw Klay evolve into a well rounded guard LAST
YEAR, and saw them moving the ball, Steph dropping dimes
all over the place LAST YEAR.

But I'm just a paranoid black guy. Nevermind me.

A Eulogy for ‘If Only’: The Bulls As We Know Them Are Probably Done

You almost had to laugh. The fightin’ Chicago Bulls, down big in the fourth quarter with their season on the line, tried to mount a comeback with Joakim Noah, Taj Gibson, and Kirk Hinrich on the floor together. Tom Thibodeau eventually swapped out Noah for Pau Gasol, but Hinrich remained in, and Nikola Mirotic did not sniff the court in the second half until the game was hopeless. Tony Snell, who can actually shoot 3s, may have been serving beer in the stands.

If Thibodeau was going out, he was going out his way: playing big, defense-first lineups made up of trusted veterans. And yet you laughed in part because, hell, it just might work. These Bulls never stop grinding. How many times have we seen Chicago, with zero spacing and an offense nearly eligible for antique status, ratchet up their revolutionary defense to ludicrous speed for some last-gasp 12-0 run? Opponents suffocate, Noah roars, some random jumpers find the bottom of the net, and the Chicago crowd rejoices in their peculiar bunch.

But it didn’t work this time — it never has against LeBron James in the playoffs — and the Bulls now step into an offseason that promises both hot melodrama and the cold reality that Chicago may be stuck with this not-quite-good-enough roster.

The principals have pooh-poohed the alleged rift between Thibodeau and the front office, but every sentient human close to those principals chuckles at those public pronouncements. The rift is very real, and people close to Thibodeau have been assuming for months that his time in Chicago would end after this season. The Bulls will try to trade Thibodeau before firing him or negotiating a buyout for some of the $9 million1 left on the contract extension he weirdly left unsigned for months. Thibodeau isn’t going to quit with that much cash on the table. He can bide his time with two nice fallback options: returning for another slog with the Bulls or going home with his pockets full.

Orlando and especially New Orleans present intriguing trade options for Chicago, though neither should surrender a first-round pick for a coach. Thibodeau wants to chase titles, and Anthony Davis gives him the best chance to do that over the next half-decade. Davis will be the best player in the league very soon, a pterodactyl on wheels who would grow into Thibodeau’s best individual defender since peak Kevin Garnett in Boston. Davis has already worked with Thibodeau on Team USA, and Monty Williams this season dialed back New Orleans’s pick-and-roll schemes to line up with what Thibodeau runs.

The Pelicans’ defense was still a disaster, but slot Thibodeau there next season, and I’d bet good money on New Orleans making the biggest leap up the defensive efficiency rankings. The Pellies’ perimeter defense was leaky all season, but Thibodeau imposes a rigid order that smooths away a lot of mistakes that happen when players veer outside their lanes. Thibodeau’s teams don’t allow corner 3s,2 they force pick-and-roll ball handlers away from screens, they don’t foul, and they (usually) clean the defensive glass. If you don’t do those things every single damn time, you don’t play. And if you don’t understand them at first, don’t worry: Thibs will work you through the longest practices and shootarounds in the league until you get it. Even the players who respect Thibs concede that it can be drudgery to play for him.

Orlando has a lot of young guys who should develop into plus defenders, but they don’t have a star, and their ugly parting with Stan Van Gundy — a close friend of Thibodeau’s — surely colors the way Thibodeau views the franchise. The Magic also just gave Rob Hennigan, their GM, a contract extension, and after his rocky relationship with Chicago’s front office, Thibodeau might crave a larger role in personnel decisions. He has the clout now to at least push for that kind of power in contract talks.

Waiting a year, either in Chicago or as a coaching free agent, also carries one big benefit: the possibility of the Lakers job opening once Byron Scott’s placeholder timetable expires and the Lakers are (theoretically) ready to get good again.

As for the Bulls, they’ll be fine going forward, but “fine” feels like such a disappointment for a team that looked set as a long-term Eastern Conference juggernaut in 2011. The Bulls won 50 games this season with a semi-healthy Derrick Rose, and if Joakim Noah’s knee feels better after an offseason of rest, perhaps they can reach 55 again in the NBA’s minor league. And if you can hit around that mark every season, you give yourself a chance to find the right combination of health, luck, fringe roster moves, and favorable postseason matchups to make a title run. The Mavs were “soft” until they broke through in 2011. It was popular to call for the Clippers to “blow it up” — until they outlasted the Spurs and surged within a game of the conference finals.

But Chicago just never seems to get enough of those breaks, and the Bulls don’t have the star power of those L.A. teams. Rose is always hurt, he’s now missing some meniscus cartilage in one knee, and he still just isn’t close to the same player he was before tearing his ACL. Noah’s body is betraying him, Taj Gibson is about to turn 30, Pau Gasol’s clock is ticking, and Mike Dunleavy is a free agent.

This is the NBA’s great “if only” team, but too many of the things Chicago needs to go right just feel improbable now.

Upgrading this team will be difficult, and perhaps impossible, absent big improvements from Snell and Doug McDermott. Jimmy Butler, Chicago’s best all-around player, is a lock to get a maximum contract starting at about $15.8 million next season. Chicago can match any offer for him, and given how the cap is going to soar, the cheapskate Bulls should just break the bank and plop the full five-year max in front of Butler the minute free agency opens. Don’t mess around here. Don’t let Butler “test the market” and sign the four-year max deals other teams can offer just because matching that deal saves you some scratch.3

Going that route opens the door to lots of bad stuff. Butler could sign a Chandler Parsons–style two-year deal with a player option in the third year — a deal that would be disallowed under league rules if the Bulls preempt it with that fat five-year offer. The Bulls could match that, but ask Minnesota how smart it is to voluntarily reduce the time you have with your best player. Butler could even get annoyed, sign a one-year qualifying offer from the Bulls, and hit unrestricted free agency in the summer of 2016 — when his max deal would start at just over $21 million, per league cap projections. That’s a risk for Butler, who battled injuries in the 2013-14 season, but so was declining the Bulls’ four-year, $40 million–ish extension offer in the fall. Just lock the dude up. He’s an elite defender at both wing positions, and a cold-blooded shotmaker who draws fouls at a Hardenesque level when he gets to run the show. Restricted free agency scares off some teams — the Lakers hate it — but there are enough teams with cap room and nothing to lose this summer.

Unfortunately, re-signing Butler at the max would bring Chicago’s payroll just shy of $80 million for 11 players4 — right below the luxury tax line set at $81.6 million. That doesn’t include a dime for Dunleavy, a crucial player here; a new Annual Little Guy Point Guard to replace Aaron Brooks; or minimum contracts to fill out the roster. Forget about using the full midlevel exception, or even the smaller one for tax teams, to snag another key veteran. Just bringing Dunleavy back at market value would send Chicago well into the tax. The Bulls paid the tax for the first time two seasons ago, but that doesn’t mean they want to do it again.

Trading one of Chicago’s four core frontcourt players for a wing would be the best way to unclutter the roster and open up at least the mini midlevel exception. All four guys deserve major minutes, and a team just doesn’t need four bigs who require that kind of time — especially when none of them can slide into the small-forward spot. Thibodeau tried that with Mirotic, but it’s a waste of his skill set, and he struggles at times to defend wing players — especially when teams put him in the pick-and-roll, as Cleveland did when Mirotic was guarding Iman Shumpert.

Gibson is the likeliest trade candidate, though there is some intrigue around the league about Noah on an expiring contract. Executives are curious: Is Noah forever diminished, or can we rehabilitate him? But Noah is so central to Chicago’s culture that the Bulls may be reluctant to move him. He is their soul. Then again, people said that about Luol Deng, and when the Bulls found a killer trade, they didn’t hesitate.

Mirotic is on a cheap contract, and brings shooting no one else in the foursome can touch. Finding a workable Gibson-for-a-wing deal is tough, but Gibson has two years left on a fair contract, and he’s a solid two-way player. If Amir Johnson leaves Toronto in free agency, perhaps the Raptors would think about swapping Terrence Ross for Gibson. Johnson is permanently hobbled, and the Raptors need at least one more reliable defender after plummeting to 23rd in points allowed per possession this season. Dwane Casey would love Gibson.

A Chicago-Boston deal involving Gibson and Avery Bradley would probably at least spark some initial talks. The Celtics need a little more force on defense from someone in their big-man rotation, and they’ll have a glut of perimeter players once James Young earns playing time. But Gibson’s age and Danny Ainge’s well-known love for Bradley — he turned down a first-round pick for Bradley at the trade deadline, per league sources — would likely scuttle any such deal.

The Suns could use an extra big if Brandan Wright leaves, and they have two young wings in T.J. Warren and Archie Goodwin who are ready for minutes. A deal involving Gibson and P.J. Tucker might work. Sacramento is forever searching for a power forward but doesn’t have much to trade. Gibson could work well within Jason Kidd’s hyperactive defensive scheme in Milwaukee, but the Bucks would have to attach something good — two second-round picks, maybe — to O.J. Mayo or Jared Dudley.5

Golden State could use a reliable third big to get the “uh-oh, Draymond’s in foul trouble” minutes going to David Lee and Festus Ezeli, but Harrison Barnes is playing so damn well, it might be unpalatable to deal him for Gibson.6

There just aren’t that many great deals out there, and Chicago has a ton riding on McDermott turning into a rotation player — and a replacement for Dunleavy. The Bulls flipped two first-round picks to get him, and he hit just 14 triples over 321 minutes this season.

Mirotic shot poorly this season, but his presence on the floor helped Chicago breathe and represents the easiest path to improving an offense that falls apart in the playoffs every season. Chicago in 2011 and 2012 became a very good offensive team despite the spacing issues that come with playing two bigs who work inside the elbows. But the pieces were different then, and everyone was healthy. Those Bulls had two players, Deng and Kyle Korver, who stretched the defense by sprinting around picks off the ball. They had prime Noah and Carlos Boozer, and despite Boozer’s embarrassing defense and loud shouting, he was a canny passer with a solid midrange jumper.

They also had a healthy Rose, until that awful night against the Sixers that changed this franchise forever. It wasn’t a pretty offense, but it worked well enough when Chicago had some shooting and everyone was operating close to 100 percent. The cuts were crisp, passes pinged around the interior, and Rose supplied those eight or 10 “holy crap” points that every championship team needs.

Everything has gotten a tick worse since — the health, the speed, the cuts, the passing, the shooting. The Bulls just can’t get the ball into profitable places anymore. Every possession is so much agonizing work, but it’s mostly work that goes east-to-west:

Chicago took more possessions to the end of the shot clock than almost anyone, and generated few uncontested looks relative to the rest of the league, per SportVU data. Rose on the right nights can still fly to the rim for those “holy crap” points, but he’s not the every-minute driving force he used to be. He looked good in the playoffs, but he still shot just 39.6 percent overall and struggled to generate free throws.

Rose says he’s a smarter player now, and he’s right. He has that angled bank shot down, and early-career Rose didn’t have these kinds of pick-and-roll reads in his bag:

The timing of that cross-court pass, the way it catches the rotating defenders lurching in the wrong direction — that’s advanced NBA stuff. It’s the kind of pass that would work much better if the Bulls had any semblance of spacing or modernity in their offense. But that’s hard to manage when you spend 15 seconds trying to enter the ball to the post, or with Noah running dribble handoffs that don’t scare anyone anymore — not when defenses can just sag off of Noah, or press him, or switch smaller players onto him.

The Bulls don’t have a killer pick-and-roll big man — a Tyson Chandler sort who can slice through defenses, catch the ball, and dunk it. They’ve had to steer their offense in other directions — post-ups for Gasol, shooters curling around screens on both sides, and those dribble handoffs. That stuff is fun when it works, but having access to simpler tools would be handy.

And here’s the thing: Chicago’s big men, especially Noah and Gibson, turn into perfectly fine pick-and-roll players when they have space to roll into. And Mirotic, even when bricking away from deep, provides that space:

The threat of a Mirotic pick-and-pop can stress a defense into mistakes. Watch a common Cleveland strategy, directing pick-and-roll ball handlers toward help defenders, blow up when that help defender (James Jones here) sticks to Mirotic instead of dropping into the usual spot:

Look, Mirotic was overplayed as a savior, though Chicago’s numbers with him on the floor were consistently pretty good. He shot badly, and he was a bit out of sorts at times on defense. Play Mirotic more, and teams will start going small against Chicago — sticking a wing player on Mirotic, switching more, and spreading Chicago’s defense out on the other end.

But the Bulls can’t win four series playing offense the way they played it this season — especially if Rose can’t at least regain All-Star form. They couldn’t score against a wheezing, limping Cleveland team. Mirotic needs to be here, and the Bulls need to keep using him. A new offensive guru somewhere on the coaching staff would help.

Regardless, these Bulls may not be able to win four playoff series. They’ll struggle to upgrade the team this summer, and if they re-sign Noah in the summer of 2016, they may not even have much room left over for the coming cap space orgy. That is the penalty for having a super-max deal attached to a player who, sadly, can’t approach that level of play anymore. If Rose tops out in his current form, that contract is an anvil.

Any team near the top of the East is working with a larger championship window than most of the similarly positioned teams in the West. You get freaking championship French doors in the East. That is Chicago’s hope — along with all the “if onlys” this franchise has carried with it for nearly a half-decade now.

We’re still waiting for enough of those things to break right, and now we might be waiting on a new coach to replace the most successful Chicago head man since Phil Jackson.

In response to Reply # 0

an all nba player and two solid if overpriced veteran FAs added to two number one overall picks, one of whom is playing at an All NBA level. an average coach takes that mix to an easy 50+ wins, even if butler does get hurt for a few games.

instead, and despite having done his normal "only pussies rest" routine, the Butcher is desperately hoping to clinch the 8 seed on the last night of the season.

Sounds like the worst coach in the league to me.

Butler missed 23 games (10-13)
Utah has won 17 of their last 20 to surge ahead
They arent better than Portland in the first place
Andrew Wiggins is simply not good enough for hos presence to really raise expectations

i dont think there is much to draw conclusions on, other than they need Butler AND Towns to win

You won’t hear me complain about the job he did In Chicago. He was very good before the league caught up to him.

Thibs main job was to develop two superstar talents in a way that would set Minnesota hoops up for a golden age. He’s failed utterly with Wiggins, and his failure to adapt and recognize the importance of rest doesn’t bode well for KAT. Otherwise, he clearly hasn’t screwed KAT up, but ask RBO whether Thibs is maximizing KAT’s potential.

Donovan Mitchell did 22/4/4 in a stretch where they won like 30 of 38 games. Proof is in the pudding here and i have to eat crow on Mitchell.

Gobert was 2nd Team All NBA last year; even counting Jimmy, no TWolf has achieved that

Favors and Rubio are absolutely more talented than Gibson and Teague

so im not seeing it. after Towns and Butler, Minny's personnel is not good. the Jazz are not only seemingly more talented, but also deeper.

Don't have any tips to offer unfortunately. Perhaps you don't have the genetics for beard growth? I'm assuming you're in your late 30's to early 40's.

In response to Reply # 136

Buy a good solid beard brush. Brush it several times a day but keep in mind the beard is gonna do what it does. Don't try to force it if it.

Also, don't trim it too soon. Let it get a good solid foundation before you do anything. This doesn't include keeping it edged up, you don't want to go around looking like Grady from Sanford and Son.

You will need a solid beard butter or balm as well as a beard oil. I only use oil on weekends to keep this skin under the beard from getting dry. You don't want beard dandruff. When selecting a balm or butter, get one that does not contain silicon.

essentials

- a good wash or shampoo (right now i'm rocking w shea moisture coconut and hibiscus w silk protein, not specifically designed for beards but it's glorious)

- moisturizer (i'm using cremo for now; dr miracle's and shea moisture also have good ones)

- beard oil (kiehl's! expensive but worth every penny)

- balm or wax for control

buy small sizes / samples and try different brands. lot of good ones out there. don't overuse your product, if you're buying good shit a little bit goes a long way. find the right combo, have your shit sparkling like 7 up © roc marc

like the homie said, if you're starting from scratch don't even touch it for a good 2 months. i usually do a clean shave once a year and and then just let it come in, no trim, minimal edge up. it's gonna be hell, it will look and feel like shit for a good minute, but after about 8 weeks it will hit that sweet spot as far as length and thickness and start popping off lovely. then you get your manicuring on.

that's prolly a good 3 months after my last full reboot. itchy uneven mess for like the first month and a half tho lol.

brush brush brush. constantly. beards are way hard to train. product and maintenance is key.

until you know what you're doing let a pro do your trimming and edge up. i've had a fully since my teen years so i can do the shit in the dark with my eyes closed, but a lot of cats is out here playing theyself. cheek line too low, neck line too high. just looking crazy. i see it daily. find a good barber. once you get a little more confident, a good electric trimmer for maintenance. keep your cheek and neck lines as close to natural as possible. the chinstrap jawnt is a trash look.

there's a good beard community online, lot of good IG and YouTube follows. i can give you some names.

Dula really dropped all the knowledge on this. I think the biggest issue is that you just have to let it grow. Like 0.001% of the population has whiskers that grows in nice. Everyone else's shit comes in patchy and uneven. You just have to live with it for a month or two. Just clean the neck every once in a while. I wouldn't even try to figure out the neckline, err on the side of it being further down.

Brush it constantly. After that grow-in period go to a pro to get the first trim, he can help establish the neck/check lines. Then just maintain from there.

patience is key...as has been said by the two bruvs, above. You're gonna want to fuck with it, edge it up, get cute with it, or maybe even chop the joint off, altogether. Be patient, fam. The itch will happen...washing and a good beard oil/balm are the key, here. Let it wolf out for a minute so that you can see what it do naturally. I see so many cats trying to get designer razor edges and shit be wack...they joint could do much more, if they let it breathe. My barber hits it with the razor right at the sideburn area and sets the boundary under the chin and jawline...everything else I let rock. Maybe once a month I have him knock off the split ends to continue to promote growth. Products I'm on, right now.

Because I have the hair of the ancestors, lol...I fucks with this:

I also recently copped some balm from the homie OKS fam, Snacks...I got the Rosemary joint...it's serious quality.

Get you a good boars hair brush and a wooden beard comb. Don't use a plastic or metal pick or nothing like that...they'll snatch yo shit out. Be blessed.

it's versatile, too. Sometimes I throw it in while my beard is still damp, then layer another product for the finish. Sometimes it's the only thing I use.
