"NFL Preseason Games thoughts thread"

is there a thread? didnt see one

i am 'legally' watching the Browns/Lions broadcast on a site and this Lions tv chrew is atrocious. laughably horribly terrible. the Manziel hate they are spewing is disgusting.

anyway. Manziel looks solid. Carson Palmer went 5/5 and Fitz had a TD.

... You know the official Cleveland Browns announcer dude is calling the game.

The Steelers and Ravens could end Johnny Eightball's career. I'm thankful Johnny missed every part of that Hall of Fame Ravens defense. Troy Palomalu can still hit by the way. I hope to god Johnny doesn't do the shmoney dance at the Ravens or Steelers on home field.

I'm watching this game for Connor Shaw.

Who are you again?

*EDIT*

You said and bitter Russell Wilson set an NFL record on your squad. YOUR TEAM IS SAD AND BITTER GTFOH.

Are you calling me sad and bitter saying I'm thankful Johnny missed those prime Ravens and Steelers defenses? There are maybe two QBs in the league who outlast that defense and that's a strong somewhat suspect maybe. That is in no way a diss because that defense put QBs out the league and got dudes cut.

WAY too excitable. Made a couple good throws, but kept trying to take off and do things he couldn't. Nearly drove the Vikes out of field goal range after a fumble on his first drive.

It's the first preseason game, and it's hardly his career, but this killed any chance he had to start the season opener.

the Browns still looked like the Browns in preseason. field goal fest. Parcells ball (but not by design).

Dion Lewis fumblin' really killed them. Since he used to play on the Eagles and was one of the only good RBs in relief of Shady, I'm still a fan of dude.

Terrance "Teezus" West (I believe it was Amritsar who bigged him up) is a BEAST. he definitely is gonna be that dude.

I think they'll be straight defensively. Staples was definitely coming up big on a number of plays.

Offensively, don't matter if it's Hoyer or 8-Ball, it's better than watching wack-ass Weeden. actually, just seeing them (Manziel in particular) has highlighted how absolutely dumb the Bees scouts have been at picking QBs.

they seriously do need to hope that Goodell gives Josh Gordon the "Goodell Special" though. and by that I mean the "Ray Rice and Others" treatment.

OKP. As a Towson alum, best believe I hyped the heck out of dude. He literally put up Tecmo Bowl numbers during his career at Towson. To put things in perspective, he was that good that he left school a year early despite playing FCS (I-AA) ball (he was also a year old for his class, but I digress). I predicted he might be even better than our previous best back in school history - Dave Meggett.

Our defense looked great...even without a legit secondary...

No reason this group can't go 10-6...

I think the WRs that we have now are better than last year...more dependable...better hands...

I am nervous about our Special Teams though...nobody has taken that Ted Ginn return slot yet...

I thought he'd be too big and a step to slow to get consistent separation from DBs. Obviously he's got a lot to prove yet, but he's looking like a truly legit WR. I'll take my L on that one.

Jordan Palmer might end up being the odd man out

If mark trestman somehow turns clausen into
A productive qb...

Cutler looked really good but I'll contain my excitement

1st team D looked solid
Kyle fuller is gonna be a beast

Tailback we got from Arizona was looking excellent
Jordan lynch looked better than I thought he would

It's far more then just his numbers...his composure, progressions, accuracy, touch have all been far beyond what you'd expect for a rookie in his 2nd pre-season game. To add onto that, he can move and is very fluid and balanced throwing off the run. That play where he went through his first 2 progressions, and then threw a beautiful ball on the sideline fly...Jags have to be excited.

In response to Reply # 0

they're letting Henne call his own plays and run a hurry up

which seems to me, would indicate they have no intention of starting Bortles this year

They looked pretty good as a team overall

D looked really improved

Gerhart at RB, ehh, a solid starter, but I didn't see any depth at RB

they drafted really well at WR IMO, with Lee and Robinson

weak division + winnable out of conference games

I'm gonna say JAX makes the playoffs

w/o Bortles starting (he might get some snaps, because QBs usually don't play all 16, but he's not beating out Henne this year).

In response to Reply # 0

Looked hurried a lot on his first drive and got helped out by the Cards backup safety taking a shitty angle on a run play. But his second drive was what he needed. Led a long drive, made some beautiful throws and really only had one questionable decision (that resulted in defensive pass interference anyway.) His problem is when he drops back and can't settle his feet. He can make his reads, though.

Cassel's the week one starter, though. There's no way you can argue otherwise after two weeks. If you're actually rooting for Teddy Bridgewater to succeed in the NFL, this is a move you should support.

Whatever manufactured controversy that existed sure as shit is settled after tonight. I expect more out of a guy with more prep time than RG3. Given the reps he could be Brian Hoyer aka a solid game stretch of above average play but that's generous right now.

ESPN980 folks calling in are saying RGIII is "done" and it's time for the team to go with Cousins.

Some people are even saying Manzell looked better than RGIII. RGIII had one bad pass and was 6-8 passing. The other incompletion was a pass Jackson should have caught.

Oh well.

that he displayed last year and in his rookie year

the racists mortgaged these drafts just to get him

and he did a great job as a rookie

but got hurt, mostly because he was out there on that Mike Vick

watching him take 3-4 hits on 1 run

fold his leg up underneath his own body, in a turrabull attempt to get down

and then come up gimpy after actually sliding on another play

yeah, I'd say there is cause for concern in ol' DC

granted, he did look sharp on the first drive

but when the pressure got to him

he resorted to that throw off the back leg let me try to flick the ball 20+ yards downfield with a lineman in my face...

= pick

year 3, and he looks worse.

There's no way Manziel looks legit against the Steelers, Bengals, and Ravens. If Connor Shaw signs with a coach that believes in him and a system that supports his strengths then he will last longer than Manziel.

I expect more from a first round pick with JFF's hype. J3DC needs to spend more time in his playbook than on IG. If he's not careful and Connor Shaw makes the roster, there could be a QB controversy again.

Ray Farmer clearly believes JFF could bust. This is insurance in case he flames out. JFF is injury prone and one headfirst slide away from a concussion. Hoyer is a career backup. Grossman is an assistant coach at this point in his career. Shaw should make the roster because he's outperforming the starers.

He executed a game plan he couldn't prepare for. Let that sink in for a second. I like what I see out of him so far. He carriers himself like a starting QB.

Can't see it being any of the QB's, and probably not any of the first round WR's. Maybe an Andre Williams or Kadeem Carey or someone who was a later pick. Is Bishop Sankey going to get the #1 RB job for the Titans? Maybe him.

The first defenses were decent and maybe they can scrape out some wins against some of the worst offensive teams, but neither offense looked good at all. Relying on defensive holding penalties to extend drives. Can't see more that 5 wins for either this season

and now Hoyer's been named starter. So 8-Ball Mania will have to wait for a while.

GOOD.

I already called them a playoff team in this thread

I'm legit worried for week 1

season opener, at the Linc, and the Iggles look like they're still on vacation

I'm hoping they show up Thursday

in that vaunted week 3 preseason game where the starters play extended minutes

but if we take an L, week 1 to JAX

that tough schedule gets ALOT harder.

But in the next couple of years? Especially if Bortles keeps growing and Gus keeps on Gussing? Fucking PUMPED.

and blue eyes with a "big arm".

But he was a mediocre QB in college. Playing in the same offense that Chase Daniel put up video game numbers in. Gabbert was nowhere near as good as Daniel despite being "5 star" recruit and Daniel was a 2 star Longhorn reject.

Didn't get first team snaps, but two TD's against KC and there's still another quarter.

I bet Miles Austin is missing Tony Romo already; Hoyer was missing him like shit (for some reason) and effed up a few drives because of it. Hoyer did redeem himself with at least one good drive.

I'm not drinking the "Johnny Football can't hack it in the NFL" Kool-Aid. I think he's going to be a solid NFL quarterback, maybe a slower version of Vick. Every one of his throws is on target and nicely thrown, but the WRs (particularly Snead, #83) were on some bullshit. On a non-substantive note, the energy this guy instills in the fans is ridiculous. Like, for a guy whose legend is borderline Tebowish, people show out for him. Love the Money Dance (which Michael Sam mocked, LOL)

It's actually his running that isn't so great (looking), but he uses it appropriately. Sitting him this season is going to be a good look. If the Browns have an underwhelming season then he can maybe start a couple games toward the end and begin his "Rodgers" movement.

I know that it was mostly 3rd stringers out there but man that defense looks like it's regressed. All kinds of missed tackles. Justin Gilbert's was especially embarrassing. Rams looked like Football Gods out there.

Speaking of the Rams, tough break for Sammy B. I want that guy to succeed but he keeps getting hurt. Their backup QB is legit though (Davis). Good to see Trey Mason out there (I didn't know the Rams were the ones who selected him). I mean, the only real bad thing I can say about the Rams is that they're in one of the toughest divisions of the NFL. And as of now, they have the shortest end of the stick. they're a solid football team otherwise though.

Cam is out due to cracked ribs, injured back, and the ankle...

Derek Anderson's wife is expecting a baby any day now so Derek will most likely not be available...

Matt Blanchard has a concussion...

So that leaves Joe Webb to play the entire game against the Steelers...

I originally thought that Carolina was going to keep just 2 QBs but it looks like Joe Webb has a great chance to make this team with Cam being injured. Especially if he continues to get better and play well like he has during preseason.

If Webb makes the team, that means Carolina is going to keep just 5 WRs...

He throws impressive looking Kevin Kolb passes. At least twice he went for the bomb and went short.

And he was off target. Him starting this season in Week 1 would be problematic.

Justin Gilbert is looking every bit a rookie. Missing tackles like shit.

Looks like we'll be seeing the same ol' team. Josh Gordon won't be there, might as well have a regular Bees season.

My thoughts might change right before game day but I can't justify spending the money to support this team and really the NFL in general. It's just become a shitty product. The Browns have embodied the recent trend of the NFL - keep putting out shittier and shittier product because the stupid ass fans don't care if it's shit, they gobble it up without question because it's football.

I was pissed to be blacked out from the game on the NFL network somehow even though I live in Dayton and it was a fucking preseason game. I'm pissed about the Gordon suspension being upheld. I'm pissed about their backpedaling on the domestic violence stuff. I'm pissed about all the flags, commercials and stupid little breaks during the game that basically require you to record it to keep any kind of flow to the action. The Browns sucking doesn't surprise me but they shouldn't expect people to keep putting up with this bullshit. It all just seems like a test of how far can we push them, and I'm at the breaking point.

I definitely feel you there. On all points.
I want to see them field a good team, but lately I have had the same issues with the league to the point. It's a great game. It's just dangerous and the leaking of the "business" side of the equation even more into the end product is real annoying.

He's outplayed Orlovsky and proved he belongs in this league with strong play over three seasons.

JFF COMPLETED SIX PASSES. All this media hype about his performance AND HE COMPLETED SIX PASSES. I can't take a full season of a sinful Tebow. He completes three passes last night against the first string defense.

How is Thad Lewis out of a job but Jeff Tuel is still on the roster? MMM HMM 'CISM.

Did TP win the third string job?

Is it me or did Blame Gabbert have a decent game?

Brock Osweiler needs supporters. He tall and lanky but somehow he gets the job done. He was out there dealing last night. He needs more reps somehow.

Aaron Murray can go for 12 for 16 if given the minutes in a game.
