Nicks turning down Panthers a poor sign

By David Newton | March 15, 2014 11:47:26 AM PDT
So wide receiver Hakeem Nicks, after signing a one-year deal with the Indianapolis Colts, says Carolina Panthers general manager Dave Gettleman made him an offer but "it didn't turn out the right way."

Could it be the money wasn't enough? The deal with Indy reportedly is worth a maximum of $5.5 million. I doubt the Panthers would have gone that high even though they don't have a wide receiver with an NFL catch on their current roster.

Could it be Nicks thought quarterback Andrew Luck and the Colts were in a better position offensively to make a run at the Super Bowl than Cam Newton and the Panthers? Well, Luck is the more proven quarterback, and he does have a more proven offensive line and weapons around him.

Newton doesn't have a left tackle, his running backs are getting up there in age and -- as mentioned above -- he doesn't have a proven receiver, since Steve Smith was released Thursday.

“I think it was just the situation," Nicks said on a conference call. "After talking to Gettleman, I think he agreed that this is the best situation for me as well, too, even though they made the offer. Like I said, I feel like I made the best decision and I’m going to take advantage of it.”

This doesn't bode well for Carolina. If Nicks, a native of Charlotte, didn't think a team coming off a 12-4 record with the league's No. 2 defense wasn't the right situation, then the Panthers have a problem.

With only a handful of quality free-agent receivers on the market, the Panthers are back in a position of almost having to re-sign No. 2 receiver Brandon LaFell, who never has been a dependable No. 2 receiver.

This makes getting a starting wide receiver in the draft even more imperative. Fortunately for Carolina, the draft is rich in wide receivers, even for a team with the No. 28 pick.

But first-year receivers often struggle.

Perhaps Nicks realized this was a situation where he wouldn't benefit because there wouldn't be another proven receiver to take the pressure off him. He'd be no better off than Smith was.

At Indy, he'll be flanked by Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton, two proven receivers.

"It looks like a three-headed monster to me," Nicks said. "Last time I was in that situation, I won a Super Bowl."

Three heads are better than one.

Or in Carolina's situation, none.

Hakeem Nicks: Panthers GM agreed Colts were best fit

Chris Wesseling
Around the League Writer

Nicks strikes one-year deal with Colts
Hakeem Nicks' one-year, "prove-it" deal with the Indianapolis Colts was one of our favorite signings of free agency's opening week.

We're not alone in that sentiment.

Although Nicks drew plenty of interest from his hometown Panthers, he told The Charlotte Observer that Carolina general manager Dave Gettleman agreed that Indianapolis offered a better situation for the wide receiver.

"Yeah they made an offer when I talked to Dave Gettleman," Nicks said. "But you know it just didn't pan out the right way. I feel like this is the best fit for me.

"After talking to Gettleman, I think he agreed that this was the best situation for me, too, even though they made the offer. Like I said, I feel like I made the best decision and I'm ready to make the best of it."

Nicks and Gettleman have a relationship from their days together with the Giants, but it's still a bit surprising that the shot caller for a 2013 playoff team with a glaring void at wide receiver would tacitly concede another team offers a better chance to rebuild value.

Along with the Colts and Panthers, Nicks had his eye on the San Diego Chargers. The New York Giants never offered him a contract to return.

"I didn't really like (any) of the situations, and I didn't want to get myself in a long-term situation that I didn't like," Nicks explained. "This is a great organization and a chance to show them what I can do and what I can bring to the table."

Nicks does have collegiate ties to the Colts' coaching staff. Head coach Chuck Pagano was North Carolina's defensive coordinator in 2007, and wide receivers coach Charlie Williams was Nicks' position coach at the same time.

Although Indianapolis doesn't know exactly what to expect from one of the NFL's most enigmatic players, the offense offers plenty of potential with Andrew Luck throwing to a wide receiver corps that also features Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton.

"That's exciting," Nicks said, via The Herald Bulletin. "It looks like a three-headed monster to me. Last time I was in that situation, I won a Super Bowl. So I'm excited about that."

In my experience that doesn't happen very often

And its the previous regime that spent so much money on extensions for Williams and Stewart. With Mike Tolbert too they will probably actually have a decent-to-good ground game, but not for what they are spending on it.

But when the defense is giving up 17 ppg in 2014, the QB has to do for self sometimes.

steve smith just wasn't that good last year

Lafell?? Ginn was actually the guy they should have found a way to keep as he was good for 3-40 every week and good return skills...

Cotch is a gamer, he's pretty similar to the Steve Smith that is still playing now, Avant can at least catch, was Lafell that much better? And they picked a WR round 1

horrible.

But still, why waste a #1 overall pick on a QB if you're not going to give him the tools to be successful?

If you're trying to go the defense route you may as well find a guy in the 2nd or 3rd round like SF or Seattle.

They took a receiver with their #1 pick, and brought in a reliable, if unspectacular Jason Avant

They have 2 decent receiving TE in Olsen and Dickson

And a fairly talented backfield, although its tying up a lot of $.

If Cam was worth that #1 pick in the first place, that should be enough to win games with that Defense.

Benjamin was considered to be a major project which is why he went late first round, Avant is a #4 WR at best, if you're counting on him as a 1 or 2 you're in trouble

>They have 2 decent receiving TE in Olsen and Dickson

Dickson is just a name

Cam is still the best runner on that team

Any QB is only as good as the weapons around him, that's football 101

They are not counting on Avant to be a #1

Olson, Cotchery, Benjamin, Dickson will be their top 4 receivers

And Cam is only the best runner on that team when Williams and Stewart are hurt, which has admittedly been often But the current GM didnt sign those deals anyways.

Not to mention Mike Tolbert, a pro bowler last yr who had a few 900 ap yd seasons in SD.

Plus you bring up Seattle, what weapons do they have? Greg Olsen would have been Seattle's best receiver and Williams had the same ypc as Lynch. Bring back a healthy Stewart and Cam has just as much around him as Russell Wilson did. Unless you really rate Golden Tate highly.

You can't be arguing that because Carolina has a top 5 defense that they don't need weapons around Cam Newton...come on

The 49'ers have a great defense and got Kap some weapons
And the Seahawks weapons are still BETTER than what Carolina has.

To say that Luck and Ryan only need weapons because their defense is so poor is an excuse. Both defenses (moreso ATL) had injuries to deal with. So it wasn't for lack of trying

It's insane that Cam has to ball with what they're giving him. It's like what the Jets did to Geno Smith last year (and as someone mentioned, McNabb for a chunk of his career)

There's no good reason to say that because the Panthers are building up the defense that the offense should be Cam et al. Even all time defenses that won Superbowls in the 2000's (Baltimore, Tampa) had SOMETHING on offense, especially when their QB's were mediocre.

They gotta give Cam a fighting chance out there.

He was hamstrung with those extensions for Williams and Stewart. If those guys are good this year, this whole conversation is moot.

But if you dont think Olsen, Benjamin, Cotchery, Dickson, and Avant are as good as Tate, Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Zach Miller, and Luke Willson I will have to respectfully disagree. Greg Olsen is the best player among that whole group, and Benjamin has potential coming out of his pores. Harvin is a weapon but he didnt do anything for SEA within the offense.

They do? who does Russy have? Golden Tate?

Just once I'd like to see one of these guys get a chance to play with a CJ, or an AJ or a Julio, one of these big, fast, superstud WR's that make these white QB's look so good.

I think the only black QB that ever really had some real weapons around him was Culpepper in Minnesota.

they're the two best teams in the NFC and the Seahawks have an incredible D. plus he has a great RB. there's not many roster criticisms you can really levy against these 2 teams.

>

i mean sure, that'd be great, but this doesn't really take into account each team's situation or the free agency landscape. those guys come with a price, and if the team feels they'd be better off spending elsewhere, then I can't really blame them as long as they put up a serviceable corps. plus, i know you're just listing examples, but those are three guys that have never hit free agency, and there aren't many truly elite WRs outside of these three.

and previously to this regime they Greg Olsen trade was solid...

Big WR FA class this year, next year they have to sign someone and draft another wr early, and if Benjamin pans out (which I'm on the fence about at best) they can still get there

dudes who shouldn't have even made college football squads on your NFL squad. I mean, even if you wanted to argue Tom Brady's current situation, the Patriots over time have had least had NFL-grade WRs. I'd have killed for a Troy Brown/Deion Branch type WR or two on those Andy-run Eagle squads

"2. Panthers' pre-draft workout with Ryan Nassib

During the pre-draft scouting process, teams are only allowed a limited amount of workouts with prospective players. The Panthers opted to use one of theirs on Syracuse quarterback Ryan Nassib about a month and a half before the draft.

Nassib, who was considered by some to be the 2013 class's top quarterback, was not a late-round prospect by any means."

Nassib:
4th Round, 110th pick, not picked by the Panthers

Money crunch!!! Marty Hurney gave outrageous contracts to players and now the new GM is trying to get the Panthers out of cap hell. Bad contracts to Delhomme, Stewart, Williams and Johnson really hurt the Panthers moving forward. It was damn near impossible to land a big name free agent wide receiver this year and pay him properly. I like Hakeem Nicks but he is not the answer. I was disappointed how they released Smith but it had to be done. By releasing him they saved money and lets be honest name one receiver that Steve Smith took under his wing and help develop? The Panthers are building a solid core through the draft and by 2016 season make a huge splash at picking weapons for Cam. Their first priority is resigning Cam after this season and possible contract extension for Kuechly. Even thou Hardy is a important part of the defense, I don't think the owner want to risk resigning him with his legal issues. So that Kony Ealy draft pick is looking pretty good now. Basically by 2016 every big name free agent wide receive will want to come to Carolina. Carolina system from last year made players look better that what they truly are. Ted Gin had a 1 year deal and put up the best numbers of his career and now the Cardinals gave him a 3 year contract. Mike Mitchell was laughed at when Oakland drafted him and under performed so we offered a 1 year deal and he had the best numbers of his career. So then the Steelers give him a 3 year deal. Even thou Kaepernick has weapons, he do not know how to spread the ball. Cam biggest improvement from last year was his ability to spread the ball.

Our top 4 WRs only got 1900 yards last year...

And that doesn't count Greg Olsen who was our leading pass catcher

They picked up Ed Dickson so they can run more 2 TE sets which is where Cam flourishes...

And Carolina's defense over three years since Rivera got there has made strides...and it should be better this year....

Our front 7 is still there and our secondary is improved...

Jason Avant has better hands, a better route runner and faster than Brandon Lafell.

Jerricho Cotchery beats Ted Ginn in all categories except speed.

The x-factor is can Kelvin and a fourth receiver (Pilares, King, Mcnutt or Underwood) combined to match Steve Smith production? Yes they can. I can't see the future but I think Kelvin could possibly match Steve production alone. Let me explain.

Last year Steve wasn't a 1000 yard, 10 plus touchdown receiver. I think Kelvin will be utilized a lot in the red zone increasing his touchdown numbers. As for yards, I think he will have a little less but one of those receivers I named above will make up the difference.

I would have loved for Steve and Kelvin to play together but I trust the GM decision.

Avant
Cotchery

Avant and Cotchery are honestly #3 WRs and have been for a few years now....

and honestly..how many consecutive years does James Stewart have to get hurt before the Panthers bring in another RB?? Stewart is hurt in camp again already.

Let me rephrase Cam has "better" weapons this year compare to last.

The team would lose a lot of money if they cut Stewart due to the crazy deal Hurney gave him. The Panthers drafted running backs Barner in 13 and Gaffney in 14 but Gaffney is already lost for the season due to knee injury.

Is deluding themselves

Take out Olsen and no one in the world would take any TWO receivers in that first group over Kelvin Benjamin in 2014

And the current GM has nothing to do with Stewart and Williams contract situation.

The current GM has nothing to do with Stewart and Williams contract but he really can't do anything about it.

the fact that the GM even got them to restructure was a win for them

blaming this GM for not putting Cam Newton in a position to succeed is ludicrous

I get that the loss of Steve Smith is shocking and all. But he hasn't been the same guy since 2011. The Smith cut was more about Kelvin and the other young WRs and not the salary. He had a history of not willing to help the younger WRs out like Moose did with him.

Top 4 WRs only had 1900 yards. Olsen was the leading receiver. I think 1900 yards can be replaced between Kelvin, Jericho, Jason, and Tiquan.

Defense will be top 5 in the league.

And as for Jonathan Stewart. I stopped defending him. I hope we release either him or Williams in 2015. The salary cap situation won't allow it otherwise.

jason avant was horrible when asked to step up to #2 last year
he basically lost his job to riley cooper
not sure what was up but he lost the main thing he was known for, dropped hella balls
i'd be surprised if he had 600 yards receiving honestly, that still may be an improvement iono
he's a good christian leader in the locker room though

Riley Cooper balled out. He balled out so well that they released Desean Jackson. If Avant got 600 yards that would be better than Lafell production and speaking of dropped balls Lafell had a lot.

Russ Wilson did it and his WRs were avg at best.

Once he stops throwing off his back foot then he can start blaming other.

Stop making excuses for him. His problem is being consistently accurate.

He couldnt read a D. He was Vick before Vick, when it came to studying his position. He admitted as much and is telling his son to learn from the pocket first.

Only thing Randall could do is throw the deep ball. So unless Cam gets a Moss(They did give him Benjamin, which I think was a great move) he will continue to be inconsistent.

In addition, why are you reaching on race? Tom Brady won with nobodies at wr and a D. He hasnt won shit since they been trying to load up on weapons. A D is enough.

I don't completely agree, but the decisions this off-season make more sense depending on what they do for Cam next year & beyond with better cap space (and hopefully a developing Kelvin Benjamin):

"Perception says that the Panthers were a young team, largely because they had a young quarterback; that their passing attack, though nothing special, could at least stretch defenses and create opportunities in the running game; that any team with a defense this strong must have a talented secondary. In reality, only the Saints had an older offense last season; no team had more trouble getting receivers open downfield; and the defense was built on a conservative scheme that asked very little of its subpar defensive backs, relying instead on a dominant pass rush to stop opposing drives.

These were not minor holes that could be patched in one offseason. No, these repairs were going to take time, and attempts to get better in 2014 would likely leave Carolina treading water at best, and certainly not getting closer to a championship. So general manager David Gettleman made a difficult decision, opting to yank the Band-Aid off all at once. Wholesale sections of the roster were lopped off and replaced on the cheap. It was a painful measure, but one that might have been good for the long-term health of the team. By taking one step back now, Gettleman has positioned his team to take two steps forward in the future."

And he won't be out of the woods completely until 2016. Meanwhile, during that time, we have to pay Cam, Luke, and Star.

Once deangelo and Stewart get off the books, we will have a cap to work with.

This years draft was about replacing folk in a year. It's looking brilliant right now. The Kony Ealy pick was about replacing Charles Johnson in 2015 but since Greg Hardy is beating up bitches, Kony will be replacing him. I don't see Carolina breaking the bank for Hardy anymore.

Tyler Gaffney boils down to getting the RB situation in order. Next season it's very possible that both DWill and Stewart will be gone. At least one will be gone for sure because we need that money to pay Cam. Gaffney being out for the season will put a damper on cutting both. I was at fanfest and saw the injury. It looked bad.

I expect Carolina to take a step back but not 7-9 step back. More like 10-6 step back. They do still have a top 3 defense in the NFL and the secondary has improved.

Maybe that 1st rd receiver they drafted is pretty good. Hes the clear front runner for ROY and is looking like a Pro Bowler. He has almost 4x the yards and 3x the TDs of Hakeem Nicks btw.

This current GM sure is neglecting to put talent around the QB!

key drops, he's good but is still a rookie and makes a rookie mistakes. Expecting a rookie to come in and be your #1 WR from day one is an automatic L. the rest of their receivers are garbage. Their running backs are garbage. The defense appears to have taken a step back as well also.

The guy that the Panthers LET GO just MANHANDLED that entire defense. He wasn't even looking for big $, and wanted to finish his career in Carolina, and they said no

Steve Smith is better than EVERY WR on the roster

And they STILL haven't answered the RB situation...Deangelo Williams is gonna miss time AGAIN

The rookie is solid, but Steve Smith is better by miles right today. And to argue that Avant and Cotchery (who I'm a fan of) are decent weapons is insane.

counting on Williams and Stewart to be their top 2 RBs shows the front office ain't doing enough to put a solid offense together..

I know the Stanford kid got hurt..but still... they should have more than some undrafted practice squad players filling out their RB depth by 2014....

no way.

It's a 20 million dollar cap hit if we cut either one of those RBs. Gettleman would love to get rid of them but he can't yet. We have two of the top 6 highest paid RBs in the NFL...and Gettleman wasn't there when those contracts were given

And as our WRs, comparing production between the guys now versus the guys from last season, the 2014 core has more catches and yards.

Cam isn't 100% and Rivera finally admitted that earlier this week. And Mike Shula is our OC.

Our defense is killing us though. Greg Hardy doesn't make the defense fall off that much. We dominated the Lions without Hardy. But our defense is built on a stellar front 7. Without that, we are screwed because our secondary is trash.

The Panthers could've kept Steve Smith Sr. and paired him with Benjamin. Imagine their offense with those two on the field. You can't tell me the Panthers wouldn't benefit from Ted Ginn jr.

The facts are these:

The Panthers got rid of the best wide receivers on their roster in Cam's contract year. That's setting him up to fail in hopes that he plays worse and takes less money. Before you call me an idiot, realize this rarely if ever happens to franchise quarterbacks.
