"So what are still some of Bron's weaknesses?"
Tue Jun-17-14 01:13 PM by melmag

As much as hes able to go "bath salt" any minute, hes equally capable of folding down the line as well. FACT.

Granted he holds no blame (or does he?)for this series, but I cant help but imagine how Cheese in the same predicament wouldve somehow willed his team to victory, or at least make it more competitive.

As complete a player as we've ever seen, what are still some traits/weaknesses/intangibles, that uneqovically hold him back from *truly* being GOAT?

I cant pinpoint it really, but somehow, something's missing. What is it?

in the last 3 games he really only tried like 3 quarters. rest of the time he was content to pass.

But at the same time he can penetrate at will aND get to the paint that way too.

But yeah, passing should be a last resort...unless it's just some build ya teammates confidence meaningless reg season game lol

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

no one in this league right today. the great centers would, but they don't exist any more.

meanwhile, the Brons would take turns driving one on one against defenders who were too scared to leave the other Brons, all of whom shoot around 38-40 percent on 3 pointers.

you're silly

I'm talking about a real Zach Randolph-Carmelo-Kobe back
to the basket post game.

As in, him becoming a post presence in this league.

I honestly don't understand.

Also, a lot of his points this series were garbage
points when his team was already blown out.

He was unimpressive

the time. Here's what you do: brew some good coffee, drink it black or with only a dash of milk like a man, and use of those black stir sticks to stir it around and drink it. If you were to do that around a woman, you would actually probably get COMPLIMENTED. Or it would at least be a conversation starter, which would then allow you to drop the knowledge I just dropped on yall.

Polish your teeth? NOPE, $100 toothbrush.

Strengthen your teeth? NOPE, get a mouthwash with fluoride in it.

Scrape your teeth? You can even get those for like $5 at Wal Mart if you need them.

Floss real deep? Do it yourself.

No offense meant, just a scientific observation

Its not that you drink coffee out of a sippie tip straw,
its that you would drink coffee out of a sippie tip straw
if you did drink coffee, which you don't.

So you hypothetically drink coffee out of a sippie tip
straw, in your imagination.

That's gay.

primary ballhandler/facilitator AND be the primary scorer at the same time.

Jordan and Bulls didn't really start to flourish until Scottie took aver the playmaking duties.

He needs to decide if he wants to be Magic or Jordan, he can't be both.

his post game is being compared to a Power Forward...

regardlss of how big he was ...he was a point guard...and generally by nature he would not be a post player...

but his primary half court game for a long time was down on the block...I'll say this..

Magic played 12 years before his first retirement...

of those 12 years...he shot over .500 from the field 9 times...and once .492..

again....as a point guard..

Magic could not only score from the post..but he could facilitate ...he could get and ones.....much better free throw shooter than LeBron also..

but no..LeBron's post game is not better than Magic's at all..

and I'm pretty sure if most people had to say coming down for the last shot..whose hands would you want the ball in..most would choose Magic over LeBron....many would choose Magic over anyone ever...

He could be more assertive and be a better leader if he just were more honest about others' lack of effort.

When they're down and sinking, he goes into Bath Salt mode. When he's in Bath Salt mode, nobody rebounds, nobody cuts, nobody sets off-ball screens. Everybody in the arena is watching LeBron James.

It's been that way his entire career.

Or, to be more accurate, he has it, but it's recessive-- it rarely shows up in his behavior.

People want him to be the MJ/Kobe/even Melo type of guy, where he says "fuck you" to spreading the ball around, he takes 30-40 shots, and he says to himself, "If losing, I'd rather shoot 30% on 12-40 trying to win than try to win by putting the ball in the hands of my teammates."

That's simply not who he is. Or it doesn't seem to be. Not consistently.

Which, for the most part, is fine. But that's what makes all of the "he needs help! lulz" mockery so funny-- he actually DOES need help. If he's going to play the way he clearly prefers to play, he needs help.

I'd say it's worked out okay for him. It is, in fact, fine for the most part. If he hadn't encountered the most consistently strong and balanced and well-coached franchise in the NBA twice, he'd likely have four titles by now. Which is, yknow, pretty fine. He needs to work on it if he wants to get past them in the future-- potentially next year.

And just because it's a flaw doesn't mean the losses are his fault. Really, if a team is at the point where they need the star to go for 45+, the main team problem is pretty apparently not the star's lack of ability to go for 45. They have many bigger problems than that-- his lack of ability to put up 45 against a stout defense is remarkably low on the list of things to blame.

I have a hard time coming to grips with sure lebron can dominate all the time but he'd rather have more help so let's blame his teammates. What?

And for the most part, it is. I didn't say having a flaw is okay-- I said "it's worked out okay"-- and it has. (Edited the post title so the semantics police couldn't bust me.) Unless they're facing the Spurs in the Finals, it is fine. It's worked extremely well for him and Miami. I fail to see how you don't see that.

This isn't like addressing some normal player's flaws. We're trying to figure out how the best player in the world, multiple MVP and multiple title-winner, can become singlehandedly invincible. Which means everything in here is nitpicky.

So my nitpick is: maybe they'd win those games against the Spurs if he rejects the way he normally plays, the way that's won him two title, multiple MVPs, etc... and goes for self. MAYBE that works. Maybe not, as it still doesn't solve the huge team defensive deficiency or the team rebounding deficiency. But it'd be fun to see him try.

The right way and right play is the one that wins you the game.

If you are the most gifted scorer on the team, you score if the team needs it. If the team needs to play better D, you say it all season, you push them in practice and demand they play high level. You don't GET TO THE EFFIN' FINALS AND SAY "I NEED MORE HELP!" You're IN the finals!

In response to Reply # 83

41 In Game 1, 42 in Game 3, and 50 in Game 4, right? That's how much he needed to score to win each of those games by one-- so that's all on him, right? Just average 43.4 PPG in the Finals, and you've won! Do better, Bronny!

I realize you may not be saying that (or maybe you are, who knows), but there are actual people who really do think these losses are Lebron's fault primarily, citing the reasoning you cite-- they needed points, he's the best player, he has to carry them. The end.

Logic seems to dictate that, if your best player averages MORE points per game and MORE rebounds per game shooting BETTER from both 2 and 3 than he did during the season, and you lose your four games by wide margins... maybe it's not really the best player's fault.

However, maybe logic needs to be ejected.

In response to Reply # 86

He did it in spurts but not consistently. The spurs pretty much played him how they figured he'd play. Instead of his scoring opening up slots for everyone else, the spurs tailored their D to slow all his outlets down, minus shard who was just on since the pacers series. By the time Bron gets his scoring hat on, they are down 15.

The first quarter of game 5, 3rd quarter of game 3 are evidence it was the strategy to employ. He wasn't smart enough to recognize it.

I mean, you have to lay blame on his feet because he failed to recognize the strategy and adjust. Let someone else handle the ball, post up and suck in the D, pass out from there. Kwahi was hot, keep pressure on him in the post and try to keep him in foul trouble.

Something.

Don't just "I need help" because you score 19 in a quarter where you were down 25. Adjust and come out assertive and try a different strategy.

He coulda put up the same numbers in different ways and maybe made more plays if he didn't HAVE to play a certain way to be successful.

When Jordan had to learn to empower his teammates instead of carry them, he broke through, though his numbers didn't change, his game did.

Bron needs to learn the opposite. He's great at empowering his teammates, he has to OWN carrying them when it's needed. He's 6'9", 265

Except in how fun it would've been to watch.

The biggest problems-- defense and rebounding-- he could've helped more on (although his rebounding numbers were up), but many of those problems had to do more with personnel matchups and a drastically weakened "Pippen" who had to not play defense just to try to muster anything on offense.

If lebron goes down firing tho...who knows? At the very least he forces San an to play him differently and that can free things up for miami.

But when miami is down or struggling and in need of buckets, he needs to be imposing his will or at least attempting to.

But yeah, I've said everyone is to blame. Bron's play this series and especially game 5 left something to be desired if we are treating him like the best player in the league.

By the way, anytime lebron passes, with the exception of to an open ray allen or to a wide open dunker, it's success for the defense. Especially when everyone else is struggling. The last thing the Spurs wanted to see is lebron trying to take over. It's the same valid criticism we'very had for him for the last what...5 years. When he goes bath salt he escapes it, and Miami wins chips lol.

Was gonna have the "Come To Jesus" talk with lebronon about his deficits and lack of GOAT worthiness.

The rampant fan boyism based on modernism and not factoids is disgusting.

-He guards 1-5 = BS, he might spend 5-8 possessions a game on either position and he's not thoroughly effective at it. Besides there aren't many traditional C's today anyway. But any with a post game work him (like Duncan when Bron tried to guard him and timmy is considered a pf). And most quick pg's work him over too. Besides, I happened to watch some highlights from the 91 finals and saw MJ guarding magic and guarding vlade at points. HE GUARDS 1-5!!!

2) Like LB said, he Let's pg's guard him without punishing them (barrea in 2011, Parker in 2014) and it's because his low post game is marginal. Jordan was 3 inches shorter and 45 lbs smaller but had a much better post game. Go figure.

3) Shrinkage - well documented but let's just say he doesn't fully understand when his scoring needs to dominate and his other typical hats (facilitator, rebounder, etc.) Should be delegated.

4) Lack of accountability/indifference - he does not have a high level competitor's mentality. Which is great for real life, but no so much for a professional athlete. When he loses it doesn't drive him, he shrugs it off like "it's just basketball and I'm a little sad we lost but it's just basketball. I got my family and friends so I'm good." Even in 2011 when they lost it was more about people being happy he lost affecting him than it was that he lost.

For all his skills physically, what keeps him from being GOAT is his mental (and emotional) capacity as an athlete. If he had a smidge of genuine assertiveness with a touch of occasional f**k the world-ness, he'd already be GOAT.

But as such, he'll be a rich, good dude with a top 3-5 ranking. Nothing wrong with that...

... And Jordan better.

lets say with the post game. thats the most telling example
in the last 2 years there were moments where he'd do simple 8th p.e. post shit. 2 dribbles turnaround baseline. score
2 dribbles dropstep. score

and then he'd abandon the thing he was doing that couldn't be stopped.

which is so strange for someone who is one of the best basketball minds of any era.

look what happened when they put haslem on timmy. timmy barely posts up, but they put UD on him, he gave UD that work, and that ended that shit.

if a guy can't see out the eye, KEEP HITTING HIM IN IT.
Bend their gameplan to you.

I dunno. Maybe he's so used to the highlights the boring way doesn't work? Or maybe having so many gifts he likes using them all?

this is not the better player argument, just difference in mindset between the 3. If Bean or Jordan had a 15 fter that they could hit every time down court, you think they're giving that up to get other people involved?

fuck no.

im gonna kill this dude.
then im gonna kill the next dude when the first dude fouls out or proves ineffective
then when you send the double im gonna make the right pass
and then when you stop doubling im gonna go back to killing whatever dude is checking me.

and if im on the road, it's gonna kill your crowd, your bench, the guy guarding me, and im gonna enjoy every fucking minute of it.

he can dish it out when it's a blowout or when it's close, but when things don't go his way he usually is nowhere around when it counts
you can go back to all of their losses and see that he expected the refs to bail him out (complaining about calls and shit and expecting getting them to get them back in the game instead of playing your way out)

In response to Reply # 76

when I read that I kind of thought about it...

I think LeBron is one of the most physically talented basketball players ever...I mean in that area he maybe 2nd to only Wilt Chamberlin in terms of the physical attributes they bring to the game...

but a great basketball mind..

what you're talking about as far as what he does to "get his" so to speak.... that's a sign of a lesser acumen then say a Jordan or a Kobe for sure....

Magic had a great basketball mind...

I think LeBron's upside is physical.... not so much mental

that's why people used to always say lebron "overthinks" things.

it's because it's easy that he goes away from it. it's boring, it's not exciting.

an easy layup at the right moment has the same effect on momentum that a dunk has. but lebron grew up watching jorn like the rest of us, so that easy layup to shift the momentum somehow feels inadequate.

fans have him thinking he gotta go two-hands off ten toes from the free-throw line.

it's an impossible situation, and lebron at this point can just say, "I got enough highlights already. I don't need to do all that bullshit to prove something to ya'll."

to SHIT. spurs beat em, period. that was true to an extent with dallas, but bron did some folding there.

i think jordan may have performed a bit better in the series, but he would not have "willed" the heat to victory. san antonio had them beat up and down the lineup after bron, basically.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Unless you're willing to argue that a player who averages 35/6/5.5 with 3 steals and 1.6 blocks, wins MVP and DPOY isn't in his prime. And then there's the matter of #45 Michael Jordan.

Sorry if it kills your Jordan as God narrative, but that nigga lost early and often in his prime. You don't get to re-define "prime" as "years in which his teammates were good enough to get him a chip".

A player's prime is the peak of his performance, and Jordan was a better performer before he ever won a chip. In the seasons in which he won titles, his PER averages out to 28.56. In the 4 seasons prior to his first chip, his PER averages out to 30.95.

Jordan, like every other player, needed his teammates to get it done, and they were good...good enough to win 54 games the season after her retired. It doesn't take anything away from the GOAT to talk about him honestly.

He was a stat filler in the first half decade of his career, of course his rating would be higher
but he became a better basketball player once he understood how important team ball was to his success
that's when he entered his prime as a more efficient and complete basketball player, it has nothing to do with how bad or good his team was

So you count Bron's seasons as a straight-from-high-school kid as evidence of (3) additional seasons in the league but discount MJ's (3) years at UNC under a hall-of-fame coach and (1) summer on the Olympic team under another hall-of-fame coach as if Bron had an advantage by age 29??? Really???

I'm gonna let you g'head with that crazy logic!

Many, many, high schoolers come to the L and take an L and don't take off until season 3 or later ... hell, most can crack the starting line-up until a couple of seasons ... Bron could and did but in your world that is a difference maker of cheese-eyes?!?

If I wasn't also such a cheddar eyed fan I would point out that his ascension came as Magic/Bird and Isaiahs began to decline ... but nahhhhh

Stop the madness ,,, you have to know when to fold, the games over, I don't know if you know.

i've seen this shit a million damn times already.

you can't be all "jordan couldn't win until magic and bird and zeke got old" and then just ignore the fact that lebron also failed to break through until the dominant teams of the early part of his career (lakers, spurs, pistons, celtics) went into decline as their stars got older.

shit is retarded. it always amazes me that ppl fail to see the blatantly obvious contradiction there.

All good, but uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, Bron went to the Finals at age 22 (2007) peak of the Spurs/Pistons/Mavs/Suns reign.

Mavs won 67! games that season ... 67! (lost in Finals 2006)
Phoenix, 61
Spurs, 58 (had won Finals in 2005)
Pistons, 53 (had won Finals in 2004)

>countering???

using any metric of actual relevance, whether it's seasons (11) or minutes (~33K) into their respective nba careers, there's no case to be made that lebron james is more accomplished than michael jordan was at the same point.

the only argument that favors lebron, due to the fact that he started earlier, is the age-based one, which is why you cats lean on it.

that's really all there is to say on the subject. and i already said all that. not sure what more you want.

you're arguing that lebron has the same number of titles and finals mvps at the same age as jordan, and claiming that lebron having played 3 more actual nba seasons at the same age isn't relevant to the discussion. that's nonsensical.

lolz

ben wallace was gone, dude. he was their best player. it wasn't the same team that won the title. he didn't beat the pistons at their peak. he beat a lesser version. lmao @ cysing 53 wins.

those other 3 teams play in the west. they all would've kicked the shit out of cleveland that year. not really sure why you threw them in there, as if he went through them to get to the finals or something. that didn't really make any sense.

when lebron came into the league the great teams were the spurs, the lakers and the pistons. big 3 celtics formed after his fourth season. he never beat any of those teams at their peak in a playoff series. never won titles until the stars of those teams began to decline.

please explain how that's any different than what you said above re: jordan and the great 80s teams.

jordan's bulls never missed the playoffs.

the 3 times he lost in the first round -- his first three seasons -- were to a 59 win bucks team, a 59 win celtics team, and a 67 win celtics squad that was arguably the best team ever.

lebron's first three years, he missed the postseason twice and beat a .500 wizards team in season 3.

never go full retard.

81 to 86, dude was the best shooting guard in the league, arguably the best defensive player in the league, and one of the top 6 or 7 players overall.

AND NOBODY EVER TALKS ABOUT HIM.

dudes are actually in here whining about fucking drexler or the admiral being underrated (as if) when a guy like sidney is basically all but forgotten.

can you imagine if dude had played in NY or LA? he's be a household name.

so you can lose if the team is great, like the Bucks and 'nem ... but Lebron can be criticized when losing to a Spurs team twice? The '14 Spurs team being as good offensively as any in NBA history?

MJ loses 1st round b/c teams were great, Lebron loses b/c his team didn't beat a great team?

"say what now, huh?

lebron's played 11 seasons, bro. michael jordan hadn't played 11 seasons by age 29.

what's so hard to understand about that?

jordan lost in rd 1 early in his career. lebron didn't, because he wasn't in the playoffs. you implied that the latter is better. it isn't.

what's so hard to understand about that?

o and for the record i didn't shit on lebron for losing to the spurs. they were the much much better team. i knew they were gonna kick the shit out of dude. i called that before the playoffs even started.

http://tinyurl.com/qjendc7

never once thought miami was gonna win that series.

so i'm not sure why you even brought that up.

i've addressed very specific points, don't just whip out every boilerplate lebron defense in your plea-bag, rebutting shit that i didn't even say.

And people need to chill with this LeBron is gonna do xyz going forward. Bron, Bosh & Wade debo'ed the league, period. However, he'll never be 26 again playing w/ 2 future HOFers also in their athletic prime.

We'll just have to see how it plays out.

post jordan, people value dynamic scoring two guards more than anything.

Plus this myth of jordan being unbeatable is certainly fuckshit, but people run with it outta habit.

Put like this, the only flaw in bron's game? He could be a better low post player, and he uses scoring as a last resort. That really is about it.

for Bron's handle not being "fluid", he hardly ever gets ripped though, and he's actually a good playmaker, great facilitator..

however, Melo & KD are better ballhandlers by far imo, but dont necessarily protect the ball as good as Bron either.

Naturally, you'd think better ballhandlers make for better playmakers/facilitators as well but nah

You guys basically covered it already, I'm impressed. Good job, good effort.

Really it comes down to a willingness to lose and not wanting the responsibility that comes with carrying a team. Real leaders don't need to say, "follow me", they lead by example. After the 1st he clearly took his foot off the gas pedal and if you claim that's cause of fatigue (against 40yos?) then it's his fault for not pacing himself.

He's got two chips, but is plagued by the same issues that prevented him from winning earlier in his career, and I don't see him overcoming them.

By the way, as laughable as the "he needs help" plea is, you can see people still cop it and Lebronon will be forced to hide behind it for years to come.

part of what made the Bulls so dominant is that they were scared to let MJ down.

I doubt if Lebron has ever cussed one of his teammates out. Sometimes that's needed.

It doesn't take away from the spurs. No one is saying lebron shoulda stopped the spurs' offense. In fact, i don't think any of the critiques in here are based on what Lebron did on defense...(altho he wasn't 'perfect' on that end in this series)

Lebron to be a defensive beast in the regular season year after year. I think last year he was motivated by the DPOY trophy. Considering what he gives you on offense, as long as he's still a top defender you gotta be satisfied imo.

as far as this series, I can't critique the lapses he had...everyone had them in that series and i'm not sure what player wouldn't. Especially the game when San an was hitting everything, it can kind of feel like 'whats the point' lol

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

However, when I was talking with people about the series they kept talking about Bron couldn't do any more. I had to remind them that Bron was also out there on D when the Spurs were busting Miami's ass..

Not all his fault but he shares just much in the teams poor defensive performance as anyone else out there.

on D, which is key considering he was one of the three or four best perimeter defenders ever
Pip got the tough assignments because he was a little bigger than Mike and didn't have to score as much, but let's not act like Mike had a severely reduced role on D because Pip was a defensive genius

It has regressed to a noticeably lower level than his Cleveland days. His athleticism and first step are finally back to 2008-2010 levels this year (the weight he put on in 2011 seems gone, thankfully), but it seems like he cannot sustain it over the 41+ MPG that he used to be able with the Cavs.

His post game is the best this year that it has ever been. While in 2012 his post game was simply a two-choice option of passing out of a double or a turn around fadeaway, he's finally added a rough looking hook over his right shoulder, a spin move towards the baseline and an Amare-lite blow by on his defender. I would like to see him employ more diverse footwork as that would really open up a whole level of options for him down there.

His free throw shooting will likely stay at 78% on his best day, so there really is little hope in that regard given how often he changes his form when he gets frustrated.

did had Bron or someone called them out...and then maybe it wouldn't have made a difference at all and had the exact opposite effect.

I'm just thinking how Bird called out his teammates prior to gm 4 vs the Lakers and as a result Mchale closed lined Rambis...but those were different players in a different era.

to win more titles? I'm just going to assume 10 because I think any player of his magnitude wants to keep winning.

However, something about how at peace he & D Wade seemed to be in those pressers just kinda rubbed me the wrong way. Again, I could be reading it totally wrong & I know there's a lot we don't see..

I just think about Duncan never being in a position to win 3 in a row & how he had to fight year in and out to get 5 whereas LeBron with the Heat enjoyed the luxury of having a sustained advantage over the league for a short time. Who knows if he will have that luxury again so is he ready to go thru the gauntlet if he's not able to go to 3 or 4 str8 NBA finals again to win say 2 in 4 or 5 years, etc. Kobe had 3 rings but he had the motivation of winning w/o Shaq to prove his greatness. Iono if Bron has anything like that but of course losing this year is definitely going to motivate him quite a bit.

I don't think he leaves Miami & I would love to see how it plays out while they retool & take a few more shots at winning titles. They're only a few support players away from being right back on top.

It's the answer he'd probably give if he were asked the question and was bluntly honest. He wants to play the "right" way and he's going to do it, even if it means routinely delegating responsibility in the biggest moments to lesser players.

But it's not that big a deal if he's delegating to the right players... and what makes the player "right" is confidence, not necessarily talent. I mean, Kyrie, Wade and Bosh had both... but he had some confident role players like Chalmers and Haslem that would step up when necessary.

Love has done his damn thing but I think the rest of this Cavs team (outside of Love and Kyrie) is so deferential to and dependent on James that they really can't be trusted in a tight situation and passing to them is actually the wrong play.

you stupid motherfuckers.

Lebron is one of the greatest *scorers* ever

That is, simply make him *average* at everything else
and his ability to *score* would render him a slam
