The initial one was all those gone-in-six-months-hole-in-the-wall places in Bucktown. Not the sort of thing that tends to garner a lot of Yelp reviews, as I understand it. But crazy good. My wife was a big, big fan of the initial burrito bracket because it was a shot against the coastal/border stranglehold on ethnic foods. Her hometown, located in Nowhere, Southern Minnesota had a ton of Mexicans that had come there initially as migrant farm workers. Her father once got paid for a job in menudo. Then some stuck around and started working other jobs, including the odd restaurant.

In any case, Nate Silver wandering around his neighborhood and finding methodological problems with a strong contender closing three days after he stopped in seemed to find something *right* about the burrito-eating experience in the United States in its embrace of inconvenient particularity.

I'm not sure this does, but I'll be delighted to be proven wrong. We noticed it up yesterday and look forward to following feverishly.

(shifting from your earlier assumption that all San Diego burrito entrants are made "California Style"... which is itself a shift from your earlier assumption that all San Diego burritos contain potatoes)

you do realize that the bracket is in search of America's Best Burrito, right? Not America's Best California Style Non Potato Burrito?

The fact that California is a region unto itself shits on your initial post. Chicago's style of pizza is one niche style amongst many, while there are 16 CA burrito locations in the top 20 alone. And correct me if I'm wrong, but it looks like those locations are in 9 distinct cities from 4 different counties.

So, yeah, hate on California all you want, but you can't say shit about our burritos.

I don't even give a shit about burritos like that, you're just wrong as fuck.

> Sport?

Edit: You got it Chief.

like damn. it's not that deep. that's part of the key derp to this whole thing is silver sucking so much of the joy of the subjective decision of one's favorite burrito and now you're like the old-school scout grumbling about unwritten rules (NO SOUR CREAM!) while Silver babbles about yelp scores and VORB and I just want to eat a motherfucking lengua taco in peace.

I thought the original comparison would be apparent. Silver looks like a JV nerd comparing Cali style burrito places to Mexican burrito places. Its a different bread altogether. English IPA VS 'Mercian IPA (vs SD IPA, Wally, you win that one).

Sorry I didn't include that (implied) word in my first post. And if you don't understand that there is such a thing as California style burritos yet not all burrito places in California make them, then...mos dios...hence my original comparison to deep dish.

but now that I think about it I believe you've now been to Cali twice recently & been both above and below L.A. which is a real kick in the ass for those of us in the City of Angels.

However if you've got a decent-sized window of down time before you bounce next Tues or Wed (and can give me hopefully 24 hours notice).... I would be happy to head south to be the road dawg to help fritter away the hours in an offhand way.

Just kick me some more specifics once you've got em and I'll fill in the gaps from there.

Got a new whip, no job and time/money to burn thru summer.

Is that what you're calling a California burrito?

That's California style that are sold at spots that cater to whites.

Carne Asada fries are the same thing. They aren't authentic to mexico of course, but they're good as hell when you're drunk/high.

Otherwise, you can get whatever type of burrito you want in California. Meat only, meat and beans, or filled with all the cream and bullshit you want.

To me, a burrito should consist of a toasted tortilla, filled with marinated meat, cilantro, onions and salsa. Definitely no guac or sour cream, maybe beans. But that's it.

Tacos are no doubt the superior option for meat-to-carb ratio and being able to get a variety of meats and flavors on your palette in one sitting, but I started going out with a white chick and she is all about that Burrito Life.

In most cases, something fried then sloppily tossed in with a bunch of stuff on a big crumbling, shitty piece of bread that usually breaks apart while you're eating it.

I'll have to check that out.

But I will say since moving west, I've experienced a new level of Mexican cuisine.

My usual spot Casa Don Juan here in Vegas is unbelievable every time I go.

I had a paper idea once where I was going to try and throw some epidemiological models on the spread of the Cathar heresy in the late middle ages. Just... an awful, awful idea. Offensive both in size and shape. But every once and awhile I sit down and really throw myself into making something out of it. Almost out of spite.
