"OFFICIAL St. Louis Rams Off-season post...."

the draft is done, overall I'm pretty please, we added some much needed depth at OL and DB plays added more depth at our already strong DL and a couple of other nice pieces...

- Greg Robinson, Auburn, tackle, 6-5, 332 - I like the pick, although I admit I was a little nervous about it, I liked Matthews a lot because he's more polished as a pass blocked plus has the bloodlines. I'm a little wary of words like "potential" and "upside" that are mentioned as the key superlatives about Robinson after the Jason Smith experience of a few years ago. But everyone says Robinson is supposedly a totally different guy so we'll see...

- Aaron Donald, Pitt, def. tackle, 6-1, 288 - another guy who I didn't know much about but from descriptions sounds like he could be a poor man's John Randle. The Rams now had 4 first round picks on the DL and those guys should do some damage...

- Lamarcus Joyner, Florida St., safety/CB, 5-8, 184 - sounds like a great nickel guys, I've heard comparisons to Honey Badger, if he's anywhere near that good he'll be a great addition to the secondary...

Tre Mason, Auburn, running back, 5-8, 207 - a nice get in the 4th round, Zac Stacy came on strong last year but we don't want him to get complacent. Richardson and Pead might packing their bags...

Mo Alexander, Utah St., safety, 6-2, 212 - love this kids story, from the local area he was out of football a couple of years ago and working as a janitor at the Edward Jones Dome, gets back in school and ends up being drafted by the Rams to play in the Dome...

E.J. Gaines, Missouri, cornerback, 5-10, 190 - a great kid that will definitely make the team and contribute...

Garrett Gilbert, SMU, quarterback, 6-4, 223 - there were other qb's available late that I liked better, Tahj Boyd went a pick ahead of Gilbert, but Gilbert has a lot of upside and could develop into something down the road...

Mitchell Van Dyk, Portland St., tackle, 6-8, 315 - this kid has a huge frame and will provide depth and has the potential to be a solid performer...

Christian Bryant, Ohio St., safety, 5-9, 198 - was injured and missed most of his senior year but Buckeye db's have generally done well in the NFL...

Michael Sam, Missouri, DE/LB, 6-2, 261 - even though he hasn't officially made the team yet and doesn't actually have a number assigned, he's #2 in the NFL for rookie jersey sales only behind Manziel, it will be interesting to see how they play to use him on the Rams defense...

Demetrius Rhaney, Tennessee St., center, 6-2, 301 - with the o-line injuries we've had over the last couple of years sometimes we had trouble fielding 5 healthy bodies so adding another o-line piece is good, Rhaney sounds like he may have potential to develope into a contributor...

these are our undrafted free agent signings...:

TE Alex Bayer, Bowling Green
CB Jarrid Bryant, South Dakota
LB Johnny Millard, Cal Poly
DE Ethan Westbrooks, West Texas A&M
FB Kadeem Jones, Western Kentucky
LB Aaron Hill, Minnesota
WR Jamain Sherman, East Texas Baptist
S Avery Cunningham, CMU
WR Austin Franklin, New Mexico State
OL Emmanuel McCray, Ole Miss
RB Trey Watts, Tulsa

none of those names really pop out, a lot of smaller school guys, but we'll see...

former Sooner and Congressman JC Watts' kid.

I think Pead is probably gone. Adding Mason and Watts gives them some depth and different looks on the cheap.

As a dyed in the wool Carson Palmer hater, I LOVE seeing these NFC West defenses get bigger faster and more violent.

i still blame hip-hop.

the depth and competition we'll have at RB, OL, DB, and DL. I would've liked to see us draft another LB, I heard that they were considering CJ Mosely before Donald fell to them. We've invested a lot of draft picks in previous years on WR's so hopefully a couple of those guys can make the leap this year. Shaun Hill is Sam's new backup. Gilbert will battle with organization favorite Austin Hill for the #3 spot.

but like you said, they've done that a few times in the past, they just need to actually develop.

I thought Jordan Matthews in the 2nd would have been a bargain, and Brandon Coleman in the 7th or as a UFA would have been a bargain, but overall i still love their draft.

i still blame hip-hop.

Robinson is the real deal. He proved it all year against top competition....

we got some real solid depth in our secondary...we needed that..we have a group back there now that's athletic and has some swagger...

Our D-Line rotation is just sick now...Donald and Brockers are going to really wreck shop..

Loved the Mason pick...we needed a "scat back".....pretty sure Pead is done...if Richardson stays then I actually think he has a chance to fill a role for us as a 3rd down receiving back..... but our RB depth now is a major strength...had we established our running sooner last year we would have made a run at a playoff spot...

as far as our WRs go.... I mean Pettis...Givens....and Quick are all on notice...if they don't start consistently producing they got to go....Schottenheimer too....

so I see that Bailey is suspended for the first 4 games for PEDs...smh. He had a chance to beat out Givens for a starting job.

(who I'm assuming is gone)... but D. Rich is the only back who has that 3rd down back skill set. Sure you could use Cunningham or Mason but D. Rich really fits that role..

other than the turf toe from last year, is D. Rich hurt?

but other than that he's never really done anything. He was literally handed the starting job last year and didn't do anything. Stedman Bailey has more career rushing TD's that Richardson.

and never really recovered....

D. Rich won the starting tailback job outright going into last season because of the promise he showed as Jax back up.... as well as training camp and pre-season games...

you don't need your 3rd down back to score rushing tDs as much as you need him to catch the ball and be a different style of back than your primary RB.... D. Rich fits that bill...

if he goes into a season as the 3rd down back, that's exactly what his role needs to be.... Pead not being a part of the discussion isn't just because Pead hasn't produced, it's also because D. Rich has outplayed him and shown more promise since day 1

I hope we don't have to rely on either one this season but D-Rich didn't win shit, Pead failed a drug test and was suspended for the season opener and that put him in the doghouse to start the season. Before that the talk was he and Richardson were even and would probably split carries.

I'm pretty sure his career in the NFL is over....

I didn't doubt there was a chance he would get cut...I'm just saying he's a better player..and has been since they came to camp as rookies than Pead and the only reason Pead is still there is that he was a relatively high draft pick...

27. "Brian Quick is impressing in the offseason.. (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 0

hopefully this means he's ready to start..

with his tools...he could be a huge difference maker....just has to catch the damn ball..

http://msn.foxsports.com/midwest/story/rams-like-what-they-are-seeing-from-wideout-brian-quick-061914

ST. LOUIS -- The Rams' most improved player since the end of last season? As far as Rams offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is concerned, the clear choice is Brian Quick.

"He's doing a great job," Schottenheimer said after Tuesday's OTA session. "Another guy that we're giving an opportunity to. He's competing for playing time. He's made the most of his opportunities. He started today. Again, just moving guys around, in and out of the lineup, trying to create competition and he's stepped up and again -- like Kenny (Britt) -- and made a lot of big plays for us."

The Rams' second-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Quick has failed to make much of an impact for St. Louis after his first two NFL seasons -- a total of 29 catches for 458 yards and four touchdowns in 31 games.

But Schottenheimer's words were welcomed by the Appalachian State product, who ranked seventh on the team in receptions in 2013.

"Oh, man," Quick told FOXSportsMidwest.com on Thursday. "It was an honor to see my work get noticed. I couldn't ask for more. I'm just going out here every day loving what I'm doing, just coming to work every day giving everything I've got. It was an honor for him to say that."

What has the wideout done well during OTAs?

"I'm not thinking out there," he said. "I'm playing fast. I'm being competitive, being more physical, and I'm just having fun. Just knowing what you're doing makes it a lot easier on yourself."

The key for Quick will be turning his success during OTAs into more tangible successes when training camp starts next month and then during the regular season this fall.

Until then, of course, talk is cheap.

But Rams coach Jeff Fisher and general manager Les Snead have shown they believe in their group of receivers. They signed former first-round pick Kenny Britt this offseason, along with former Mizzou standout T.J. Moe, but did not use a draft pick on a wideout when many were banging the drum for Clemson playmaker Sammy Watkins.

"I've been asked this numerous times, 'Why didn't you draft a receiver?' Well, we drafted two each of the last two years and they are coming on," Fisher told FOXSportsMidwest.com. "So we felt like we had other needs."

The Rams selected Quick in the second round and Chris Givens in the fourth in 2012. A year later they took Tavon Austin at No. 8 overall and his West Virginia teammate, Stedman Bailey, in the third round.

All have shown flashes of potential but are far from proven commodities.

Whether that group can step up, which will go hand in hand with quarterback Sam Bradford's development and effectiveness, will be one of the biggest story lines to watch for the Rams in 2014.

Quick believes they can.

"We just have to be tuned in," he said. "We have to be focused. Together. We have to come together, just come as one, execute and make sure we make plays. We're playmakers. That's why they didn't draft any receivers, because they believe in us. On that note, we're going to do what we have to do and we're going to make the coaches proud."

Quick won't magically morph into Bears 1,000-yard receiver Alshon Jeffery -- a player the Rams passed on when they took Quick -- but that doesn't mean the 6-foot-3, 218-pounder can't emerge as a key playmaker in the St. Louis passing game.

He has high expectations for his third NFL season.

"Man, I'm going to go out there and I'm going to try to kill it," Quick said. "Make sure we go to the playoffs. Whatever we have to do, whatever I have to do, I'm going to give it my all.

"That's my goal, just put it all on the field and give it all. Lay it all on the line for the coaches, especially for coach Fish, and Les Snead. Just make sure everything is crisp and make sure they have confidence in me to go out there."

WR's to "get it", plus he was really raw coming out of a small school, maybe this year he can make the leap, I doubt if he ever lives up to the "T.O." hype but if he can at least be a reliable receiver I'll be happy

they using and Britt on the field at the same time...if Quick can hold onto the ball...that gives the Rams some potential to stretch the field with their wide outs...

Givens may be the odd man out

even if he hadn't gotten hurt...

Mason was already ahead of him at RB....and Givens looks more explosive on kick returns..

but Trumaine Johnson sprained his MCL...out 4-6 weeks. I would argue he was/is going to be a better CB than Janoris' gambling ass. Maybe EJ will get some time at corner. I'd love to see that.
