the draft is done, overall I'm pretty please, we added some much needed depth at OL and DB plays added more depth at our already strong DL and a couple of other nice pieces...
- Greg Robinson, Auburn, tackle, 6-5, 332 - I like the pick, although I admit I was a little nervous about it, I liked Matthews a lot because he's more polished as a pass blocked plus has the bloodlines. I'm a little wary of words like "potential" and "upside" that are mentioned as the key superlatives about Robinson after the Jason Smith experience of a few years ago. But everyone says Robinson is supposedly a totally different guy so we'll see...
- Aaron Donald, Pitt, def. tackle, 6-1, 288 - another guy who I didn't know much about but from descriptions sounds like he could be a poor man's John Randle. The Rams now had 4 first round picks on the DL and those guys should do some damage...
- Lamarcus Joyner, Florida St., safety/CB, 5-8, 184 - sounds like a great nickel guys, I've heard comparisons to Honey Badger, if he's anywhere near that good he'll be a great addition to the secondary...
Tre Mason, Auburn, running back, 5-8, 207 - a nice get in the 4th round, Zac Stacy came on strong last year but we don't want him to get complacent. Richardson and Pead might packing their bags...
Mo Alexander, Utah St., safety, 6-2, 212 - love this kids story, from the local area he was out of football a couple of years ago and working as a janitor at the Edward Jones Dome, gets back in school and ends up being drafted by the Rams to play in the Dome...
E.J. Gaines, Missouri, cornerback, 5-10, 190 - a great kid that will definitely make the team and contribute...
Garrett Gilbert, SMU, quarterback, 6-4, 223 - there were other qb's available late that I liked better, Tahj Boyd went a pick ahead of Gilbert, but Gilbert has a lot of upside and could develop into something down the road...
Mitchell Van Dyk, Portland St., tackle, 6-8, 315 - this kid has a huge frame and will provide depth and has the potential to be a solid performer...
Christian Bryant, Ohio St., safety, 5-9, 198 - was injured and missed most of his senior year but Buckeye db's have generally done well in the NFL...
Michael Sam, Missouri, DE/LB, 6-2, 261 - even though he hasn't officially made the team yet and doesn't actually have a number assigned, he's #2 in the NFL for rookie jersey sales only behind Manziel, it will be interesting to see how they play to use him on the Rams defense...
Demetrius Rhaney, Tennessee St., center, 6-2, 301 - with the o-line injuries we've had over the last couple of years sometimes we had trouble fielding 5 healthy bodies so adding another o-line piece is good, Rhaney sounds like he may have potential to develope into a contributor...
these are our undrafted free agent signings...:
TE Alex Bayer, Bowling Green CB Jarrid Bryant, South Dakota LB Johnny Millard, Cal Poly DE Ethan Westbrooks, West Texas A&M FB Kadeem Jones, Western Kentucky LB Aaron Hill, Minnesota WR Jamain Sherman, East Texas Baptist S Avery Cunningham, CMU WR Austin Franklin, New Mexico State OL Emmanuel McCray, Ole Miss RB Trey Watts, Tulsa
none of those names really pop out, a lot of smaller school guys, but we'll see...
