It would be easy for the inattentive to think that the current strain David Moyes is under is the consequence of poor results and excessive tactical meekness not commonly seen at one of the most prestigious clubs on the planet. But really the seeds of discontent were sown very early on, in fact as soon as the appointment was made known a not insignificant portion of United fans loudly protested that this wasn't at all what they were expecting. And now the revolt against the new gaffer is threatening to engulf much more than just the touchline, with Fergie himself being allegedly jeered after the derby loss and feverish talk of a mysterious Arab-money takeover now a favorite of United fan boards. A loss to Villa tomorrow could start the implosion earlier than even the most negative naysayers would've predicted a few weeks ago. Especially with Bayern (which my phone always wants to spell-check as "battering", talk about fitting) looming in the wings for next week. But truth be told, United-Villa is probably just the third most interesting game scheduled for this weekend. Top of that list is arguably Liverpool v Spurs, which has turned out some very entertaining fixtures as of late. And with the Liverpool offense and defense continuing their season-long race to see who can generate more goals, this one should be no snoozer. Then there's City's visit to the Emirates; Arsenal will attempt to get over the worst birthday party in history but things are starting to look awful familiar for the Gunners and their hold on the 4th spot ever so tenuous. On the other end of the dial the relegation battle will be "highlighted" by Swansea-Norwich. Hopefully the contrast of styles results in a no-holds barred game.
Spain: Real's loss to Sevilla made what was already a very interesting title race into a devilish plot even Cormac McCarthy would think is too intense. The games this weekend make it seem like things will calm down somewhat, but with the way things have been going who knows. Barcelona will no doubt be ruing the season-ending injury suffered by Victor Valdes, but it's tough to see that as a huge obstacle the way their offense has been clicking.
Italy: Clarence Seedorf might have dodged a bullet when his side beat Fiorentina 2-0 this week, but it's gonna take more than that to shush the rumors of Pippo Inzaghi's imminent arrival. But of course there was still controversy as Balotelli claimed after the game that the ref goaded him into getting his second yellow. Back on the pitch there is an appealing Napoli-Juve on Sunday which could go a long way to determining if Rafa Benitez' side can catch up with Roma for the 2d place. Carlos Tevez is set to miss this game due to excessive yellow cardism recently.
Germany: By winning this week Bayern were officially crowned Bundesliga champions. With 7 games to go this is the earliest that has happened. They are probably the best club in all of football, so good in fact that I'll probably retire this section for the rest of the season. I can't think of a better mark of excellence than that.
France: With last week's misstep by Monaco PSG are now 10pts clear and can now almost fully focus on their clash with Chelsea. Mourinho has already started with the mindgames, stating that PSG are favorites because there is no pressure on them. Not that impressive by Mou standards, but we all know he saves the good stuff for when it really counts
