"Greatest Impact on a NCAA b-ball Program by 1 Player?"

who you got?

J.A. Adande ‏@jadande 58m
Watching “Requiem For Big East.” I’ve always said Ewing had biggest impact on program of any college player. Should I add conference?

J.A. Adande ‏@jadande 50m
Anyone saying Michael Jordan had anywhere near the impact on UNC as Ewing did at Georgetown really needs to study basketball history

J.A. Adande ‏@jadande 50m
I’m talking about someone who took a program from obscurity to lasting national prominence. There’s Ewing, then…………………………………………………………….No. 2

the influence he had within the program. He had been building a relationship with Webber since he was in middle school. Without Webber, Martin may not have been around the program at all by the time Traylor and Bullock were there...

But Martin had already built relationships with Frieder and Perry Watson, and he started in on Traylor befor Webber ever played a game for UM

I actually know a guy who knew Ed Martin personally. Martin was the kind of dude who passed out turkeys and coats to kids in Detroit in the winter and paid for basketball shoes for scrubs and stars alike. Paints a conflicting picture, but Ed Martin had the kind of love in the city that can only be earned over time. If it hadnt been Webber it would have been Traylor or Taylor.

In addition to handing out coats, and turkeys, he also ran organized gambling rings and had multiple connections to shady organized crime figures.

sooo....

i love C-Webb though. Was a fan of his long before I was a Buckeye.

I figured everybody did, thats what I meant by a conflicting picture.

I just dont think ppl know how strong his ties were to the city, and how they got to be that way. If it hadnt been Webber it would have been someone else.

The Gators were a football only school with one freak trip to the final four when Billy came aboard.

Miller was the first McDonald's All American to pick UF. They made the sweet 16 his freshman year (Billy's first winning season in G'ville), made the NCAA Championship game his sophomore (and final) year, and have been nationally prominent ever since, winning two titles.

He was K's first elite recruit, and the success under him paved the way for K to land all the other elite recruits that brought the success that followed. He took them from a good program to a program ready to be great.

College is tougher because the coaches have way more impact than the players

For programs, Ewing is a great one...I would say Lew Alcindor at UCLA

I'll think of some more

In response to Reply # 10

The Big East and ESPN and the Dome being built were all huge factors in getting Cuse to where they could recruit someone like Pearl Washington. And Pearl was the recruit/player who made it work, and took Cuse from a good northeast basketball school to a top program on the national level who could get the Coleman/Owens/Wallace/Carmelo type of players.

It's not about the best player one has, it's about the player that breaks down the door to get your program those best players.

In response to Reply # 42

While Cuse had been good for a long time, Carmelo was the first McDonalds AA they'd gotten in 10 years (Wallace in '92) and obviously got the program and Boeheim over the top with that title.

And I also think there's a big correlation between the Carmelo Anthony Center being built in 2009 (with Carmelo putting up like 3 million towards it), and the success Syracuse has had the last 5 years. This is as successful of a 5 year run as they've ever had, and having an elite practice facility helps both with recruiting and player development. Carmelo had a big role in that getting built, so he's still having an effect on the program.

What exactly did Ewing do for Georgetown? He won them the title...but they were an Elite 8 team BEFORE he got there, so how is that a great impact?

What exactly did Carmelo do for Syracuse? He won them the title, but they were still a top 20 program...but the title is HUGE because it solidifies HOF coaches career (Thompson and Boeheim)

I argued Lew Alcindor for UCLA

Now the question becomes, what defines impact?

But Adam Morrison was another level up from Turiaf and Dickau

Most people were skeptical, but there was real suspicion he'd be a
star in the NBA.

That gave Gonzaga a different steez, from niche mid major with
a few lucky runs to really one of the best programs in the west coast

I don't feel that strongly about it, but it is true

In the 5 years before Morrison showed up Gonzaga got to the elite 8 twice and the sweet 16 once, and 2 early exits.

During Morrison's 3 years they had 2 early exits and 1 sweet 16.

Since Morrison left they've had 6 early exits and 1 sweet 16.

From the tourney finishes it would appear that Morrison's time at Gonzaga was pretty much insignificant to the overall success of the program, to put it in the kindest possible terms.

To put it in more appropriate terms...fuck that guy

Since your argument doesn't take into success at the NBA level, we can throw away actual basketball ability from this discussion and focus on a player's time at college and his impact on building a powerhouse. Following this logic, Tate George at Uconn elevated that program to actual powerhouse (as opposed to gonzaga's definition of powerhouse).

Tate George was a shit NBA player. Tate George hit a shot in the 1990 tourney (pass from scotty burrell, nadav henefeld, chris smith also on that team) that elevated the program to national prominence. I apologize to the legacy of Chris Smith and Scott Burrell who were actually good at basketball. So was Nadav.

Before 1990 uconn's previous NCAA tourney appearance was 1979. In 1990 they were a 1 seed. Seeding history since:

#1 Seeds - 5
#2 Seeds - 6
#3 Seeds - 1
#4 Seeds - 1
#5 Seeds and Lower - 5
Missed Tourney - 4

Tate George was not single handedly responsible for the success of that 1990 team, and in reality he wasn't the best player but his impact on the program in unquestionable, unlike that of Adam Morrison. Uconn became a powerhouse.

http://tinyurl.com/ozrr8kx

Fun fact - Tate George scammed the Nets into thinking he was good by hitting that shot in the tournament. He would later go on to scam others as a leader of a Ponzi scheme! What scam will Adam Morrison be a part of next? I bet it won't be as good as Tate's!

Seton Hall was good for about 5 years in the late 80's-early 90's. They had never even made the NCAA tourney before that, and they've only had the occasional good team since then.

Villanova had some successful basketball history before 1985, and they've been the much stronger program since their title than Seton Hall has since their title game run in 89.

If Seton Hall had pulled it off in 89.....I really don't think things would've turned out much differently for them afterwards. That's going to be a difficult place to win consistently at, regardless.

Texas still isn't great, but nobody remembers shit about Texas basketball before he came on the scene. Why? Because there wasn't shit before he came on the scene.

We had Tom Penders and the running horns and that was it.

Without TJ Ford at Texas: PJ Tucker, Damien James, Dexter Pittman, Lamarcus Aldridge, DJ Augustin, Kevin Durant, Boobie Gibson (same high school), Tristan Thompson, Jordan Hamilton, Corey Joseph, Avery Bradley ... they ALL go elsewhere.

in the mid 90s. That was around the time my oldest brother went to school all the way out to Austin, Texas (UT). At the time, I had so many false pretensions about what Texas was like (I'm from PA). Texas immediately became my 2nd favorite college so I followed their sports teams very closely. Freeman was a beast, but it really wasn't until Rick Barnes and then later TJ Ford came and really established Texas as a legit basketball program.

Longhorns basketball used to be so obscure on a national level, it's so weird how much it's changed. Locally they're still pretty under rated and followed.

My dad and uncle used to coach Kris Black as a kid and to me that was the greatest thing ever.
