"A random wrestling post... Your all-time favorite finsishing move?"
Fri Mar-21-14 06:46 AM by Dstl1

Yesterday, my son and I were chillin around the crib and he threw on Netflix. There was a doc about the top 50 finishing moves of all time. Shit REALLY took me back to some wrestlers and moments I had forgotten about. Some of the hilarious highlights that stood out for me:
I had forgotten how Jeff Hardy used to do the "Swanton Bomb" off of ANYTHING, lol. Tall ass ladders, the tops of cages, an 18 wheeler (LOL).
just for fun... http://www.worldstarhiphop.com/videos/video.php?v=wshha1XGyD6Bof35s87P
When Shawn Michaels did "Sweet Chin Music" on Marty Jannety and then rammed his head through the glass on The Barber Shop. I literally, no cising cried tears. My son was trippin off me not being able to stop laughing.
The time when Triple H Pedigreed Mick Foley onto a bed of thumb tacks and they were sticking to his forehead and shit.
How fuckin silly the People's Elbow was...I mean I know it was preceded by a better move, but still.

Few other things I noticed in general:
All bullshit aside...Cena's "Attitude Adjustment" is pretty impressive. That's brute strength.
Who's spear did yall like better...Edge or Brock Lesner?
I'm sure this isn't breaking news to anyone, but "Walls of Jericho" and "The Sharpshooter" were essentially the same thing.
Same goes for the "Stone Cold Stunner" and the "RKO". I lean toward Randy cuz he's from the Lou.

All that said...my personal favorite of all time would have to be "The Razor's Edge". Entertainment or not, that shit looked violent. Cats was landing right on the base of their necks. I woulda been scared if shit if I was a jobber and had to fight Ramon...cuz you knew you were gonna get it

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

My favorites are the ones that come out of nowhere and allow for a creative sell from the opponent. It's why the stunner is so great. Just watch the Rock selling it alone is a thing of beauty.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QU8DDJRwjkI

And that bad Vince McMahon sell where Jericho joked it looked like Stone Cold had stunned a bottle of water. skip to 3:30ish.

Scott was my guy. a perfect move for his personality.
showed off his physical strength, gave him an opportunity to play to the crowd at the height of the lift, and then he'd drop em on their necks like he could give 2 fucks.

Burning Hammer because of the whole attempted murder nature of it.

http://www.bing.com/videos/search?q=burning+hammer&FORM=HDRSC3#view=detail&mid=63DDAC9D204C0AD04E3663DDAC9D204C0AD04E36

Stateside...diamond/ace cutter/RKO. It is the most violent-looking of the non-strike 'gotcha, bitch' finishers.

As for striking finishers, I always liked the heart punch more than I should have because it was one of those kinda awesome fake technical moves of the 80s...lifting a guy's arm and then punching him in the right spot = instant death!? Forget that you've been punching the guy everywhere else for 20 minutes? 1980s wrestling, everybody.

The Randy Orton punt move is kinda awesome too. Its like the Shining Wizard for a bigger guy.

Sweet Chin Music = another sign of Shawn's greatness. He made a superkick (another 80s move) iconic before and after an era where folks were kicking out of chairshots, table spots, and multiple throws/suplexes.

back and look so helpless. Lol. The best is when it was a no name dude that would sell it well. Priceless.

Jake the Snake's DDT was great.

I liked Goldberg's spear the best.

I think I also liked DDP's Diamond Cutter more than the Stonecold Stunner. I think DDP would do that shit from anywhere.

The funniest for me was Undertaker when he was Mean Mark Callous and he did the Heart Punch. He'd just grab your arm, put it behind your head and punch you in the heart. I remember he did it to Rocky King, some black dude with a jheri curl. Homie was convulsing and shit on the mat. LOL

But my favorite of all time? Scott Steiner's Frankensteiner. That shit was just impressive the first time I saw it.

combo.

the way Rock would snap right up and into the pose to start the People's Elbow sometimes, man. nothing got kids my age more hyped up.

Jericho's random backflip/moon sault off the bottom rope was always pretty rad.

Crippler Crossface of course.

Kurt Angle sometimes would go on these Olympic Slam combos that were awesome to watch.

Twist of Fate into a Swonton Bomb was a great, clever, aesthetically pleasing combo.

I always thought Christian's mixed-breed Pedigree/Stunner move was one of the few that actually looked like it'd have to hurt a little every single time.

Just an awesome looking move, and not terribly complex.

Also liked the Canadian Destroyer, but it looks like something out of a comic book. Doesn't even look real. Same for the Dragonrana.

I know all the "giants" do it, but it seems like when he's throwing you down its like he's literally trying to put you through the ring.

Also loved the Doomsday Device. In its heyday I bet that was a move jobbers hated that they were about to thrown into.

Truth be told, Booker T was an absolute MONSTER in the ring.
Angle Slam and ankle lock are up there too

My fav. these days is Brock Lesnar's joint...dude did that on the Big Show with EASE...I was like damn

Undertaker's Last Ride is another brutal one

Stone Cold Stunner is different from the RKO...the RKO is pretty much the Diamond Cutter from DDP

As for tag teams, nothin's messing with that 3D from the Dudley Boyz...and I was partial to the Doomsday Device by LOD

practically everyone has done a spear, so it shouldn't be people's finishers at this point. reigns should really make the superman punch his finisher. i'm generally against justa punch as a finisher, but the way reigns pulls it off is impressive, and it allows for a great sell from opponents like Ziggler.

The DDT (Jake Roberts), Flying Elbow (Macho Man) and the Figure 4 (Flair)

Those moves went beyond technical prowess....They proved to be the best exclamation points on any match Macho Man, Jake and Flair were in...

The fan boy in me would go nuts when they unleashed those moves...

So even though some Sid Vicious was pretty fuck wack in the ring, his power-bomb was fucking nice. Shit look so, you know, vicious, especially back in the late '80s/early '90s, and especially the double power-bomb he'd do as part of the Skyscrapers.

But others were ill as well: the aforementioned Razor's Edge, Ahmed Johnson's Pearl River Plunge, etc.

First time I saw that shit I lost my mind. My younger brother had tried to describe it to me, but I couldn't really process it. Then when I saw it, I was like, "Did this cock-diesel dude really just flip someone over his head with his legs?"

Now the hurricanrana is fairly common, so it's not as big of deal, but when I first saw it? Wow.

Matter of fact, Scott Steiner had the ill move-set back then: the tilt-a-whirl backbreaker, the chicken-wing power bomb. And the double team moves with Rick were insane too: the Super Bulldog, the top rope DDT, etc.

Man the Steiner Brothers kind of got overshadowed by the Road Warriors, Hart Foundation, hell even Demolition. They might well be the most explosive tag team ever. Scott had the brute strength to hang with guys like the Road Warriors, Doom, etc, but he could easily match the work rate of the likes of the Rock n Roll Express.

It's kind of odd how overlooked those two were. Scott was a dynamic big man in an era of slow, plodding big men. I liken him to the "point forward" position in basketball. Rick has a legit rep as a tough guy and it would have been great to see them against, say, the APA.

Scott's fucking arm injury fucked up everything. He just wasn't quite the same after that, and eventually degenerated into the Superstar Billy Graham wanna-be he became at the end of WCW. Knowing what he could do before made watching "Big Poppa Pump" fairly painful.

Co-sign all of this. I would have loved to see those matches, especially if Dick Murdoch and Dick Slater never fuck his arm up.

DDP and Orton both had significant career runs seemingly based entirely on that move. DDP was doing innovative shit at the time, pulling that cutter out of his ass from some crazy situations. Firemans carry, running the ropes, stuck in a grapple, whatever, he pulled those out of his ass like magic and it KILLED every fucking time. It also single-handedly turned him face.

Oddly enough, Orton used it to turn face in an oddly credible way, considering how fucking evil his character was. When Nexus invaded, Orton got his anti-hero on and started decimating the entire group with the RKO on a weekly basis and the crowd popped like crazy for him in the process. By the time the angle was done, an organic face turn happened without him losing his edge and I'm of the mind that it was mostly do to his effective use of the RKO.

In response to Reply # 0

The Walls of Jericho- the *real* Walls of Jericho- puts the guy on his face at a vertical angle while Jericho holds his leg and puts his knee on the other guys head. It looks like this:

https://thetfp.com/tfp/tilted-entertainment/8420-wwe-sports-entertainment-18.html

I dunno when he switched it to the Boston Crab, but I've hated it ever since. At any rate, even the Boston Crab is significantly different from the Sharpshooter, as the sharpshooter puts significantly more direct pressure on the knees in addition to the ankles. From a psychology standpoint, this is a significant difference as a Boston Crab guy would emphasize damaging his opponents back (though a Half Crab would definitely do some serious knee damage) in the match while a Sharpshooter guy would ideally work the legs a lot more.

Far as the RKO/Diamond cutter and the Stunner, they're both "cutter" finishers but the RKO/Diamond variation is much more athletic and dynamic, can generally be hit from any angle at any point in a match, requires no kick to the stomach to setup and brings the opponents entire body crashing to the mat, including his face. Psychologically it creates a believable finish that can be used at any time in a match do the the surprise factor. DDP in particular made that his gimmick and basically built his career off of the creative ways and moments he'd hit his finish.

First made popular by "Gentleman" Chris Adams in World Class Championship Wrestling. I'd have to say that's my favorite finishing move. Some might say the Shawn Michaels version is more visually appealing but I have to pay respect to the architect.

He later adopted the move from Japanese wrestlers. He had a pretty kick heavy arsenal and it'd be nice if the announcers would give him that nod when guys like Punk and Bryan kick the fucking life out of people.

At any rate, it's all about execution and branding with some of these moves, and Shawn definitely put a showman's flair to it with the stomping. He added a sense of anticipation to the move that gave it some weight, plus when he kicks big men he can damn near get vertical with it.

Him and Bradshaw were the only tag team after the mid-nineties that presented themselves as a physical equal of LOD.

I didn't at the time, but I dig the fact that they were never really a major presence in the tag title scene. The APA was a stroke of genius and a truly unique gimmick that put them in a wide variety of great moments. The whole notion of them being enforcers for hire helped elevate so many RAW segments over the years and put themselves over in a major way in the process.

It was cool how they transitioned from the Undertakers' henchmen to being goons for hire...I think they even won a tag title once or twice...but they never interfered with the tag teams like the Dudleys, or the Hardy Boyz, or Edge and Christian...and they were hilarious

well, technically it does because they're faking it. but in theory the opponent's jaw/head would get messed up with that kind of momentum.

the road warriors/LOD's finisher.

supposedly it was the stiffest in the business.

jake's DDT was pretty much it too. i can't remember the event, but steamboat called a spot and told jake to give him the DDT outside the ring on the concrete floor, despite jake telling him it was pretty fucking dangerous.

steamboat ended up unconscious for a couple minutes.

honorable mention for the hart attack (bret and neidhart). nothing devastating about it, but the crowd always went nuts.

Some people sold that move like champs.
But even if it wasn't a good sell, Bradshaw seemed like he was trying to decapitate people for real sometimes.
Especially during APA era, but even as JBL it was still nice

I'll also say, I'm a sucker for the Perfectplex and the Texas Cloverleaf. Also love both of D-Bry's finishers- the Labelle Lock and the Busaiku knee (or as he calls them now, the Yes Lock and the Solid Knee-Plus)

Commentary still doesn't seem to call it anything unfortunately. Sometimes Cole will refer to it as "The Flying Knee." Other times it's "The knee that beat John Cena."

Bryan himself was floating around a few possibilities and asked for fan input (which I think led to that). The knee that beat John Cena is somehow my favorite. It's like a Western movie title.

Point being, he sold it to look like it did a lot of damage to himself, meaning it had to knock the ever-loving dog shit out of the other guy.

It's actually a brilliant piece of psychology to add to a finisher.

Personally, I think they both have excellent versions of the move for different reasons. RVD added a creative wrinkle that adds to the drama of a finish. It is what it is. I love it.

in that clip?

I know that forever, Cole was playing "heel announcer," but he needs to go back and listen to good ol' JR BLACK OUT on intense moments like that, any time Stone Cold hit the ring, hell, any time KANE hit the damn ring. It seems like Cole's trying to do it with Bryan now, but he's spent so much time just SHITTING on so much of the product (and ESPECIALLY Bryan for the last three years) that it doesn't come off sincere now.
