"MLS 2014: the stars of Brazil tomorrow, here today!"

It's not hard to guess at the motives for MLS HQ to be so bullish in pursuing, and aggressively paying, MLS stars in Europe considering a return home. With the arrival of Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey in MLS over the past few months, it seems likely that more than half of Klinsmann's probable starting 11 in Brazil will be based in our domestic league -- Landon Donovan, Clint Dempsey, Michael Bradley, Graham Zusi, Omar Gonzalez, and Matt Besler will be front and center in Brazil, before re-joining their MLS their MLS squads in mid-campaign. Even more MLS contributors stand a good chance of playing a role for Klinsmann in June -- Eddie Johnson, Chris Wondolowski, Brad Evans, Kyle Beckerman (et. al.) are still fighting for a spot on Klinsmann's plane, and they'll use the early months of the MLS calendar to make their case.

Never mind the expansion news (although 24 teams by 2020 is definitely a story to watch), never mind the white whale of inviolate TV success (although it remains the last, big hurdle for the league to clear), never mind the ever-shifting academy picture that close observers know is the real key to USMNT success (although there is more aggressive, promising reformation on that front coming soon) -- the story of MLS in 2014 is the fact that you can see our World Cup stars right in our backyard, on our TV stations (during reasonable hours of the day), in our homes.

Of course it's cliche to see "there's never been a better time" but... the future '94 promised us is closer than ever before, act like you know.

___________

HOPE!

1. "wholly scientific, totally fair, actual factual LEAGUE WIDE RANKINGS!"
In response to Reply # 0

Western Conference Predictions:

--SEATTLE SOUNDERS--
A full season with Clint, the best player in American soccer (*snickers*), a determined Obafemi Martins, not just another over-priced, over-rated signing from a league with a bloated reputation (*kekeke*), an upgrade at CB with Chad Marshall (*blows kiss to 2008*), and strong continuity with a returning Sigi Schmid (GUFFAW!), it’s hard to pick against Joe Roth’s best franchise in MLS. Should be a fun year for Seattle soccer fans…

--LA GALAXY--
Losing Landon and Omar for the summer will hurt, but Bruce Arena has the LA machine too well-oiled for it to hurt them any more than it does their competition. Someone else will step in, they’ll briefly look like a star, and then Landon + Co. will go back to defending, countering, and getting results.

--REAL SALT LAKE--
As much as losing Jason Kreis hurts, potentially losing Beckerman to Klinsi’s persistence during the summer, along with the step Javi Mo has lost the past few years, are the real reasons RSL will be good, but not great in 2014.

--SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES, VANCOUVER WHITECAPS, FC DALLAS--
All three of these teams could go both ways -- plenty of promise across the rosters that shouldn’t surprise anyone one if it emerges, but some lingering concerns from last year that I’m not certain has been addressed. Vancouver needs to sort out their striker position, but the midfield of Reo-Coker and Laba could be make it a moot point regardless. FC Dallas will improve under Oscar Pareja (Fabian! I believe in you!), but we’ll have to see if it’s this year or a little later down the line. San Jose is lost in a bit of limbo emerging from Frank Yallop’s shadow over the team, but from Wondo to Salinas to Bernardez to Cronin, there’s too much talent on the roster for them to be content with mediocrity.

--COLORADO RAPIDS, CHIVAS USA--
Two teams lost in transition (Chivas USA being reshaped by MLS HQ, Colorado still reeling from the sucker punch of Pareja’s departure), it will be difficult for these teams to form the identity needed to hang in the loaded West.

--PORTLAND TIMBERS--
Look – the oks jinx is real. Fun fact: when asked in a twitter Q + A about Batman v. Superman, Diego Chara responded “Batman. Because he is mysterious.” I’m convinced -- in another life, Diego damn well might have been the guy who shot Tupac.

Eastern Conference Predictions:

--SPORTING KANSAS CITY--
Well deserved champs last year, Sporting KC returns all the key players that lifted MLS Cup last year. Jimmy Nielsen’s presence in the locker room will be missed, but finding a replacement GK just to match his talent shouldn’t be too hard. Like all strong MLS teams, the real stars are in the midfield. I’m personally hoping Uri Rosell starts to get the league-wide press he deserves in 2014.

--TORONTO FC--
Jermaine Defoe seems like a very good fit for MLS, Gilberto will definitely help grease the attack, but mainly – yeah -- I think Michael Bradley is this good. Critics might say Bradley is shrinking from a challenge to return to Toronto, but it should be pretty obvious that turning a historically moribund team into a cohesive winner in MLS as the main man in the middle is a much, much bigger challenge than the occasional sub appearance in Serie A. I’m excited to see Bradley take hold of it.

--NEW YORK RED BULLS--
Thierry Henry’s final contract year should be another success for NYRB, with the brilliant insight of continuity seemingly taking hold in New York. Cahill will be missed in the summer, but guys like McCarty, Alexander, and Luyindula should be ready to step it up while he’s missed. I might not love how Mike Petke sets his guys up to play, but I can’t argue with Petke getting results.

--HOUSTON DYNAMO, NEW ENGLAND REVOLUTION, PHILADELPHIA UNION--
Let’s all say thank you to SKC for blessing us with a Dynamo-free Final last year, let’s all curse Dom Kinnear for consistently fielding a team you are always afraid to play. I don’t know if there are the stars in Houston to be on top, but I would never bet against them. New England is the most exciting young team in MLS, and no matter their final standings I will always be excited to watch guys like Fagundez, Rowe, and Bunbury work to reach their peak. Philadelphia finally saw the light and did the necessary work in revamping midfield. Maurice Edu prove once again he’s exactly the sort of rock MLS teams need to build around.

--CHICAGO FIRE, DC UNITED--
Frank Yallop will be a success in Chicago, but it might not be the first year. Yallop has a style of play and a style of player and I don’t know how much of what he inherited currently fits the bill. Mike Magee was great last year, but the issues in Chicago wasn’t the goals. DCU got two major upgrades in Eddie Johnson and Sean Franklin, hopefully Ben Olsen can rediscover the chemistry that had them in the playoffs, as opposed to the basement, with a bit more talent in place.

--COLUMBUS CREW, MONTREAL IMPACT--
Look, I’mma be honest – both of these teams are at the bottom mainly because they bore me the most. The whole Eastern Conference is really up for grabs – any of the mediocre teams from last year might well emerge in 2014 – but guaranteed I will be least excited to watch Columbus and Montreal. Both bunker and run, both rely desperately on a lone attacker to steer the ship (Higuain and Di Vaio), and both offer little to nothing in the midfield to make me excited to watch. RIP Eddie Gaven’s career, there was a time Columbus had fun passages, you and your grizzly man beard will be missed.

6. "I woulda bumped Colorado up, but losing Pareja is huge for them"
In response to Reply # 5

and I gladly would have dropped FC Dallas, but picking up Pareja AND Hendry Thomas is the exact sort of thing that made Colorado look so good last year.

I wouldn't be shocked if Chivas USA looks good, especially early. Andrew Jean-Baptiste is going to be good for them, Mauro Rosales will help a ton, and Bocanegra can help build an identity around the team. Just so hard for a team gel and buy in with an organization so in flux, and with the "stay away" reputation it has around the league.

but yeah, the biggest changes in the West were the coaches moving (Pareja, Kreis, Renney, Hyndman all gone from last year), the personnel was really pretty stable.

oh yeah, 30m of watching Laba on the weekend made me think Vancouver might really have something in the middle this year...

can't wait for kick-off!

In response to Reply # 0

DARLINGTON NAGBE

The Liberian Prince, the smoothest midfielder in MLS, the new owner of Portland’s most beautiful biracial baby, if 2014 is merely a continuation of his 2013 campaign, then Nagbe is set to turn some heads. Fortunately for his audience, Nagbe’s best soccer came at the end of 2013, leaving us to hope for even more growth and comfort in the pressuring, passing style Nagbe was seemingly made to play under Caleb Porter. Don’t get lost checking box scores for Nagbe’s name, his greatest strength is creating space and linking play from the halfway line to the top of the penalty area. If Nagbe’s development continues a healthy upward trend, we can start eagerly counting the days till he’s eligible for US citizenship…

DIEGO FAGUNDEZ

A testament to the promise of the MLS academy system, Fagundez has done nothing but impress for the NE Revolution since his debut at 17. His haircut says he’s too young and brash to know better, his recent attempt at MLS trivia says he doesn’t give a damn who came before him. Diego Fagundez is too busy writing his own epic in his own mind to worry about such things. His pace won’t and size aren’t the reasons he’s made such an early impact, it’s his smooth touch, natural attacking instincts, and teen idol good looks impressing the fans. A solid winger with natural attacking flair, Fagundez is exactly the sort of player that helps MLS fans forgive the football lines marring Gillette Stadium on Revs game night.

HENDRY THOMAS

I don’t know if it’s the general lack of skill or the generous wealth of athletes in MLS, but ball-winning are always in strong supply. Still, Hendry Thomas stood out from the pack in 2013 (brief EPL pedigree doesn’t hurt) and he was a very underrated cog in Colorado’s successful campaign. After Oscar Pareja left the rockies for FC Dallas in the offseason, Hendry Thomas followed. As much as Pareja gets credit for getting results with a young side in Colorado, Thomas deserves just as much for being the back bone of the team. With nowhere to go but up in Dallas, I’m very interested to see how much success will follow Thomas to his new team.

KEKUTEH MANNEH

Fuck a “jet-heeled,” this kid has sci-fi movie intergalactic space burners on his back. The edict “speed kills” rarely takes such simple, instantly recognizable form as Kekuteh Manneh. He’s Dom Oduro (maybe faster…) only he can actually dribble and shoot. He’s not an every game starter in Vancouver just yet, but every Manneh sub or start makes you question the Whitecaps organization why that’s the case. New coach, new dawn in Vancouver for some of the young players, I’ll be watching to see what Manneh does with his chance.

ROBBIE ROGERS

YUP! Robbie Rogers! I know everyone loved to pillory the Galaxy for trading 2013 MVP Mike Magee, but LA is right to identify attacking wing play as a need and Rogers definitely has the ability to fill that need. At his peak, he was no slouch (have we already forgotten the trivia of who the first American to score for manager Jurgen Klinsmann is?) and a midseason arrival in LA for Rogers coupled with the adjustment to being the first truly out player in pro sports – oh yeah, some nagging health issues, too – made for an understandably challenging campaign. Now a full training camp ahead of 2014, the early glow of the media attention behind him, Rogers will hopefully remind us again why we know him as a great pro, not just a pioneer.

7. "oh yeah -- anyone else trying the Fantasy?"
In response to Reply # 0

I tried it last year, but quit sort of early on when I got caught with the snag where you had to have lineups set by Tuesday or Wednesday on some weeks due to the early games, and then your whole roster would be frozen because of it. Apparently they fixed that, so you can adjust your roster as needed before any kick-off, not just the early week kick-off.

The other thing I learned last year is you get nothing for having people on your bench really, and there's no point really to NOT using your transfers, so anyway I've been tweaking the hell out of my lineup and it's pretty fun. Not totally sure how it's gonna end up for me, but I'm just about 99% certain $7.0M for Max Urruti is way too low...

I kind of figured that would be pretty standard, but ESPN is the worst with not having a fantasy basketball app.

for mobile browsers.

It's not exactly the same as football or basketball. There is a head to head option, but most leagues just base it on point totals. You are given a salary cap and then you have to fill in a starting 11 with the money, with every player having a price. And then with that one team you can join as many leagues as you want, or not join any and just track your progress against like "Portland Timbers fans" cuz I think I told the site I like the Timbers. I'm just in it to try to score some bragging rights against some friends. But it sucked me in a bit more than I thought, at least this first week...

In response to Reply # 0

For the sold out Mexico/Nigeria game and the two apparently edged closer to making Atlanta happen. Again, if you read Blank and MLS mouth-piece Courtemanche's quotes on the event and tone of negotiations, it's clear they are both just in a pissing contest on the exact fee, Blank trying to pitch that he's a good businessmen and Atlanta is a must-have market enough to get the entrance fee down to around the $75MM mark, meanwhile Garber knows Blank really has to have to the team to make the new Falcons stadium work, fiscally, and holding out for as much as he can get out of him.

I expect an announcement before the Falcons stadium construction begins next month.

In response to Reply # 9

Charlotte is a natural sports rival to Atlanta and the two teams would round out the last of the 24 squads that Garber is looking for. also it'd help fill in the problem of no teams in the southeastern part of the United States (Charlotte, Atlanta, Orlando & Miami). the current Charlotte Eagles are actually playing their final season in USL PRO this year and are dropping down to the USL PDL after this season. the owner of the local Major League Lacrosse team (Charlotte Hounds) has purchased the Eagles spot in USL Pro so a new team will be playing USL Pro in Charlotte next season (looks like they're going with Queen City SC). the owner says they're gonna push for MLS and they already have a downtown stadium in Memorial Stadium that they Hounds play in. it's pretty old though and will need some remodeling (ala Portland Timbers).

for the entrance fee. Atlanta would be nice for plenty of reasons, but playing in the football stadium ... it worked in Seattle, but there are some mitigating factors (NBA team just left, prime downtown stadium location, great open air stadium). I don't know how many of those extra boxes Atlanta ticks, or if it's really just "we can configure it for soccer."

a "developed with soccer and football in mind" This team is going to play in the new Falcons stadium, which still hasn't even come close to breaking ground. I'm sure the plans have some way to scale down for an MLS configuration.

"developed with soccer and football in mind"

League have backed off the SSS demand and morphed the language to include this to justify the Seattle and Vancouver situation.

This is from the official stadium proposal that actually got approved:

http://newstadium.atlantafalcons.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/design-concepts-102513-08.jpg

So it has two tarp systems that block off the upper section (400 sections from the roof down) and then another set that tarps off the upper-mid level, which seems to have a correlation with how much of the "aperture" is open/closed. Notice that they even slapped MLS logos on the walls...

Infrastructure/shitfuckingofwestAtlanta has already begun and actual ground breaking happens early next month, despite recent tea party efforts to block it.

Alternatively, there have been floated ideas that a temporary reconfiguration of or on-site temporary stadium ala the Whitecaps at Turner Field after the Braves move could host the team if they want to begin play earlier than the final stadium would be ready. Or Blank could get the Turner property for a song to privately build on, but hosting an MLS team was so integral to getting the Falcons stadium passed/funded that they are going to almost definitely play there.

In response to Reply # 17

Seriously -- they need to get this sorted FAST. Fans are already waaaay too eager to blast MLS refs for perceived "quality" (never mind bad decisions are made in every league, every weekend, everywhere in the world) and having watched a bit of USL, there were definitely a few games I can recall where refs totally lost control over 90'.

Any PK deciding a game should be enough for the refs to win their side, and hey MLS -- it's time. If you're going to pay Clintu like that, other people need to eat, too.

4:30pm EST (1:30pm Real People Time)

and let's not bullshit -- this is the best matchup of the day! I've looked at what NBCSN is offering.

Hull v. Man City?
Sunderland v. Crystal Palace? (BLECH! ACHOO!!)
Aston Villa v. Chelsea?

are you really telling me the Clint v. Mike Jr. matcheup doesn't rate on a day like that? I don't really care how the final numbers come in, on the grander, more holistic, purely soccer scale, there's no question the brother v. brother matchup in Seattle is the most intriguing offering on that slate.

obviously looking forward to it...

http://msn.foxsports.com/soccer/inside-mls/mls-disciplinary-committee-suspends-clint-dempsey-two-matches-for-violent-conduct-032114

Seattle forward Clint Dempsey will miss Sounders FC's next two league matches and pay an undisclosed fine after the MLS Disciplinary Committee banned him for violent conduct on Friday.

Dempsey lashed out at Toronto FC defender Mark Bloom in the 40th minute of Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Toronto FC and struck him in the lower midsection. The U.S. international captain did not receive any discipline on the field of play, but the Disciplinary Committee reviewed the footage of the incident and imposed supplemental discipline for the action after unanimously concluding the incident constituted violent conduct.

Dempsey submitted an appeal of the action through the MLS Players Union, but it was denied earlier this week, according to a league release. The upheld verdict means Dempsey will miss tomorrow's trip to Montréal and next Saturday's home match against Columbus.

The decision reflects a new Disciplinary Committee policy for the 2014 season to mete out mandatory two-match bans for any instances of violent conduct. The new edict applies to both red cards issued from the run of play or any supplemental decisions rendered by the Disciplinary Committee, according to a league release.

Two other players will join Dempsey on the sidelines this weekend: Chicago defender Lovel Palmer landed a two-match ban and an undisclosed fine for his tackle on Maximiliano Urruti in Sunday's 1-1 draw at Portland (also upheld on appeal), while New York defender Armando received a one-match suspension for his foul on Colorado's Deshorn Brown in the 1-1 draw between those two sides on Saturday.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

Best game in the history of MLS? I've only been watching since 09 but I can't think of a better game. What a showcase! Some seriously good play and completely sick goals. Chara's two goals, Valeri's goal, Urruti's goal, Dempsey's hat trick, some amazing saves, PLUS the huge rivalry ... this game had everything. Would watch again.

In response to Reply # 46

It oddly really didn't phase me, even when Seattle scored early -- I never thought it was going to be easy. But then Chara steps into a shot and scores a goal? You have no idea how long I've wanted to celebrate a Chara goal, and that was MASSIVE. The game was wide open right then. Powell makes some young-headed magic out of the corner, Nagbe takes Yedlin's soul on a turn, before banging it off the post. No worries, though, Valeri bangs one in just minutes later. I'm already started to lose my voice and the game wasn't even fifteen minutes old? That was NUTS.

Then Chara in the 2nd half after I spent the whole rest of the time jokingly yelling that he was going to get a hat trick. You could actually hear the crowd form a "SHOOOOOOOT!" yell as he picked it up and he delivered. ON HIS 28TH BIRTHDAY!! You have no idea...

But yeah, then the draw in the end ... sigh ...

as for other great games? This old one from San Jose is probably still the best playoff moment:

http://www.sjearthquakes.com/news/2013/11/november-9-2003-greatest-comeback-mls-history

and the 4-3 game in Stanford Stadium recently, with Wondo celebrating a goal with the troops, was a great one. But yeah ... as far as atmosphere, storylines, performances, drama, MLS doesn't get much better.

this upcoming CBA is going to be so huge. The players NEED a raise, and then if they it's anything substantial? How do guys like Will Johnson, who just signed a big extension, fit in after that? Do they get a bump along with the cap or does the expanding cap just give teams more room for other guys? I dunno ... I don't even know if we'll actually see a substantial raise in the cap, but teams moving promising youngsters because they're nervous about the contract is really too bad and I feel like it happens too much (both Mwanga and Jean-Baptiste's departure from Portland feel in part related to salary issues to me).

But yeah -- Wenger ain't shit next to Jack Mac, and I don't actually rate Jack Mac that much. His outgoing tweet to the Philly Union fans was a new gold standard, tho...

53. "NYFC to allegedly play in Yankee Stadium for 3 years"
In response to Reply # 0

what, fam? also, when did we start putting periods back in acronyms?

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/04/15/sports/soccer/new-york-city-fc-to-play-at-yankee-stadium-for-three-years.html?_r=1

New York City F.C., a team that will enter Major League Soccer next year, will play its first three seasons at Yankee Stadium, according to two people familiar with the team’s plans.

The team, which is jointly owned by the Yankees and Manchester City of the Premier League, is expected to make the announcement next week.

The question of where the team would play its home games has hovered since it was announced last May that the club would join the league, delaying plans for everything from marketing and advertising to season ticket sales. The team has frequently promised a decision — it told the league in January that it would have a plan in 30 days — but has consistently missed even those self-imposed deadlines, to the frustration of M.L.S. officials and prospective fans.

The Yankee Stadium solution is a temporary reprieve; the team must find a site for a permanent home and construct it, and the three-year commitment at Yankee Stadium could be a hint at how difficult that might be.

After community opposition derailed plans for a stadium in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park last year, the Yankees turned their attention to a site near Yankee Stadium. In August, the Yankees’ president, Randy Levine, said the team was in negotiations for a nine-acre parcel between the Major Deegan Expressway and East 153rd Street that could accommodate a 25,000-to-30,000-seat stadium with connections to subways and rail lines.

But the team has announced no progress since then, and with the 2015 season less a year away, the announcement of a temporary home will buy the club some time.

The practical considerations of the Yankees and New York City F.C. sharing the same stadium are unclear; M.L.S. and Major League Baseball play March-to-October schedules. When Manchester City and Chelsea played an exhibition at the Stadium in 2013, temporary grass was installed over the infield dirt for the soccer game.

But that game was a single match played during an eight-game Yankees trip, not a full schedule — currently 34 games for M.L.S. teams — that would require repeated installation and removal of the grass, and result in far more wear and tear on the rest of the playing surface.

A Yankees executive emphasized to reporters earlier this year that a potential shared space was not a concern, saying the Yankees “realized what we were getting into” when they went into their M.L.S. partnership with Manchester City.

At an event in February to announce a summer exhibition game between Manchester City and Liverpool, Mark Holtzman, the Yankees’ executive director of nonbaseball events, said the team generally required several days to prepare for events and then several more to repair the playing surface for baseball. But he also noted that since its opening in 2009, the stadium has hosted soccer games as well as a schedule of summer concerts.

“Technology has gotten to the point where I think we can turn it around pretty quickly,” Holtzman said.

“Baseball is clearly the No. 1 priority,” he added. “We wouldn’t do anything to put anyone at any risk; there’s a major investment here in the players. At the end of the day, we look at these opportunities very carefully, and we wouldn’t get into these opportunities unless we were confident in the end result.”

Ken Belson contributed reporting.

as a Yankee fan i know they're saying that baseball is the priority, but i'm not sure what soccer games would do to a baseball field on a regular basis. i guess we'll see. also, seeing as how baseball and soccer both play during the same summer season, some very clever scheduling is going to have to be done. i'm also not sold on how the seating is going to work out. judging by the couple of friendlies they've already had there, it looks like a lot of the seating is pretty far away. hopefully they can work it out, but yeah, they need a stadium built sooner rather than later.

Soccer is extremely tough on turf given the cutting, cleats and preference to play on a watered pitch. They will destroy the Yankee outfield pretty quickly.

Wow, this NYCFC thing is turning into a cluster fuck quicker than I imagined.

it's my opinion of course, but this is what the layout was for one of the last friendlies they played at Yankee Stadium...

http://www.sportsvuesoccer.com/images/upload/chelsea-at-yankee-stadium-2012.jpg

i mean unless you're sitting down the first base line or in left field, it doesn't seem like you'd have a good view of the action. it's alright for a friendly from time to time, but a whole seasons's worth of games? then you got that patch of grass where they have to cover up part of the infield. i don't know, i'm not feeling it. i guess i'd have to actually be there to see how it is. hopefully that can get some space across the street from Yankee Stadium and build something there.

Yankee Stadium is a nightmare and MLS might really pay for chasing that Arab Money.

The Atlanta move into a football stadium which lacks any cohesive base of fan culture is ... well, it looks like another cash grab from Blank, just trying to get in bed with a partner that's attractive at first blush.

No question the league is going to suffer a bit through these moves. Oh and they need to raise the salary cap something significant. I've started mentally mapping what Timbers players might be lost in the upcoming expansion bloodbaths, and it doesn't thrill me, but at the same time we won't expose anyone that's really a game-changer. The league needs to start paying more to be able to poach more talent from abroad. The homegrowns are getting better, no doubt, but they're not ready to start comprising considerable amounts of rosters just yet.

So yeah ... MLS is going to take some hits over the next 4-5 years, but hopefully we'll just eventually look back and remember it as growinng pains.

62. "yeah, college players + the occasional incoming int'l"
In response to Reply # 61

As for the academies, MLS has basically divvied up the map and teams own certain regions. They're then allowed to put academy teams together from players from those regions. Then, if they want, they can extend a "Homegrown" contract to academy players, which is what would give the team exclusive rights to that player (i.e. that player would forego the draft, even if they went to college).

I've heard in some player interviews that the HG contract has its pitfalls -- things like exclusivity + essentially giving all your rights to the parent club. It also locks you in at a certain salary #, so even if you outperformed the HG contract and garnered interest outside of MLS, you'd be at the mercy of the club.

There are lots of players in college that went through academies (or at least I know of some Timbers ones). They are still league-wide draft eligible unless they've signed a HG contract. And the youth ranks are getting better, but to keep the level of play improving while expanding aggressively, they'll need more overseas talent, in particular poaching from the ranks of places like low- to mid- La Liga where they can't pay the bills, or Central and South Americans enticed by similar salary, but better quality of life in the USA.

In response to Reply # 65

Instead of just leaving it up to high schools and assorted youth organizations to determine how to give a kid the brightest future possible. Here in Portland, that meant things like HS kids agreeing to participate in NO OTHER sports besides soccer, and to leave the HS soccer team and play exclusively for the academy. In exchange, the kids get pro level coaching + all costs covered, but it still turned into a pissing contest as HS athletic organizations fought back against their loss of control (+ poaching of their best players).

So it's coming (LA is starting to graduate a good # of real prospects), but it won't happen overnight.

Both Atlanta + NYCFC seem like less than ideal moves that are primarily motivated by an eagerness to get some deep-pocketed owners a seat at the table -- charge them a franchise fee, get them incurring some of the debts related to aggressive stadium construction.

Atlanta could work, it wouldn't surprise me, but it's not following the model of recent success in expansion, so we'll have to wait and see.

22 Atlanta (2017)
23 Miami (TBA)

who do you want to get that last spot? who do you think will actually get it?

In response to Reply # 68

I think Sacramento could be a good fit -- another town that has only one other big league team, possibility of getting a plum stadium as part of their downtown / oldtown renovation, and then serving as a potentially rich academy pulling from the central valley population, building a good fanbase out of there, too. And they've already rolled out their branding, and its strong. As of right now, I'm not aware of anyone with as strong a case as them.

In response to Reply # 68

We've got two potential owners talking to MLS. The Wilf family wants to put one in the new Vikings stadium (and has exclusive rights to negotiate for an MLS team in that location,) but Bill McGuire (former CEO of United Health Group) wants to bring Minnesota United up to MLS. He's got some kind of a partnership with the Twins as possible stakeholders, a prime potential stadium spot for a more intimate, outdoor venue (I know they took a trip to KC to check out that stadium) than ZygiWorld and more than enough money to make it happen.

I'm definitely hoping for the latter, although I've never really liked Minnesota United FC as a name, and MLS already has one United. Their badge is dope, though

http://www.mls4mn.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/mnufc.jpg

It's got to be someone out west, though. If MN fails, I wouldn't mind seeing Sacto or San Antonio get one.

Sacramento has ownership already playing the game to get MLS, very similar to what happened in Orlando, which resulted in the most promising, imo, expansion announcement yet from this most recent round. Putting soccer in Minnesota would fill in America's soccer map better than Sacramento, but they need to show they're ready to support a club.

Like Orlando, they're an extant team in a lower tier league with ownership looking to make a move to MLS.

Attendance isn't great, but they did better than the old USL Thunder ever did last season. It would help if they didn't play in the middle of bumfuck nowhere.

I also talk to some guys who have friends down in Sacramento and I know they're already attempting to put together a supporter's group in anticipation of a possible MLS future. And the Sacramento branding was slick (better than "United," like you said) and Sac got deals with two MLS teams (POR + SJ) to loan them players. So maybe I just hear that stuff because of proximity, but it seems like Sacramento is moving quickly with an eye directly on moving up.

And I think MLS loves having the "race to 24," because they'll basically just be able to demand a stadium and give the franchise to whoever delivers first.

Now if we could just get that WC back from Qatar, we might be able to get some extra funding, too...

I obviously hope it's Minny, but maybe we'll land Miami's team when they relocate after a decade.

and their completely open about the fact that they're operating the team now with the hopes of creating a footprint in advance of MLS. Very, very similar to the Orlando situation, which forced its way onto the expansion list despite not being a front-runner prior to a dedicated ownership group making the push there.

they've already got a stadium which i believe can be expanded if needed. they've already got a decent following and it seems they're about to make that MLS push. they could very well be the next team.

of course as i've said before i'd love it if Charlotte was the next spot only because i live here (not a fan of the team) and it'd be cool to go to RBNY games and not have to drive all the way to New Jersey. they've got a long way to go though. the old not for profit Charlotte Eagles are in their last year as a USL PRO club. they're apparently moving down to the PDL. a new team is going to take over their spot here starting next year (same owner and stadium as the Charlotte Hounds). the new owner has said he wants MLS but that's as far as it's gotten.

One more game against Galaxy II before they move into their new 8,000k facility (w/5000 season tickets sold). There's been talks of expanding the new facility to 10,000. General sentiment around town is pretty high on the Republic, but I think general soccer knowledge/awareness overall is still low.

I think most of the funding for a new downtown stadium would have to come from private financing. The city just went through this whole battle to keep the Kings and had to get creative to be able to pay for the new arena. There's been talks of building a stadium out in Elk Grove, a suburb about 20 min from downtown, but for MLS to succeed in Sacramento it has to be as close to the city center as possible. I'd prefer a West Sacramento (different municipality) location on the riverfront, but haven't heard any talks about the city being a potential stadium location.

www.thecup.us runs stories about the lower level clubs a lot. some of them turn down the opportunity to play in the USOC because they can't afford to travel or get enough guys together to play a match that they need. there's been a few instances where more than one team declined the invite and it fell to another team who got to go.

91. "Major announcements: TV Deal, World Cup squad, biggest of all::"
In response to Reply # 0

Rumored that US Soccer sent notification to all Development Academy member clubs that they all must be self-funding in some form to maintain membership as a DA. Aka, end of pay-to-play at the elite youth level. Huge news if true.

Here's the TV specifics:

One of the biggest days in Major League Soccer's history has finally arrived.

At 1 p.m. Monday, MLS commissioner Don Garber and U.S. Soccer Federation CEO Dan Flynn will officially unveil the two organizations' newest media rights agreement with ESPN, Fox Sports and Univision.

Some details have already emerged. Andrew Das of the New York Times reports that the deal will be for eight years, covering the 2015 through 2022 seasons. That is the same length as Fox's contract with FIFA to show the World Cup and many other international competitions.

John Ourand and Chris Botta of the Sports Business Journal report (behind SBJ's paywall) that ESPN and Fox will pay a combined $75 million a year, and Univision will pay $15 million a year. That adds up to $90 million a year for eight years, a total of $720 million.

It is an enormous increase from the current revenue of $27 million per year. It is also a landmark relative to what other soccer leagues get from American TV rights. As Sports Illustrated's Grant Wahl pointed out on Twitter:

.@sbjsbd reports new MLS/US Soccer deal with ESPN/Fox Sports/Univision worth $90M/year. That would be more than NBC pays PL each year ($83M)

— Grant Wahl (@GrantWahl) May 12, 2014
Here, from what I've been told and what has been reported elsewhere, is a summary of what each network will get in the new set of deals:

ESPN

- At least 34 exclusive regular seaon broadcasts each year, almost all of which will air at 5:00 p.m. Eastern on Sundays on ESPN2, and digital rights to all of those broadcasts on all platforms and devices

- Exclusive rights to online distribution for MLS games not nationally broadcast, via ESPN3.com (more on that below)

- Shared rights to the MLS Cup Playoffs with Fox for all games except two each year on Univision networks

- Alternating rights on a year-by-year basis with Fox for the MLS Cup Final and MLS All-Star Game

- Split rights to U.S. national team games with Fox, the details of which have not yet been confirmed

- Rights to the MLS SuperDraft and other events

- Rights to MLS broadcasts on ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes

- Opportunity for ESPN Radio and ESPN Deportes Radio to air MLS matches

Fox Sports

- At least 34 exclusive regular-season broadcasts each year, almost all of which will air at 7:00 p.m. on Sundays on Fox Sports 1, and digital rights to all of those broadcasts on all platforms and devices

(There is not a requirement that all games must be on Fox Sports 1, which means some games could air on the much-less-distributed Fox Sports 2)

- Shared rights to the MLS Cup Playoffs with ESPN for all games except two each year on Univision networks

- Alternating rights on a year-by-year basis with ESPN for the MLS Cup Final and MLS All-Star Game

- Split rights to U.S. national team games with Fox, the details of which have not yet been confirmed

- Opportunity for Fox Sports Radio to air MLS matches

Univision

- At least 34 exclusive regular-season broadcasts each year, on Friday evenings at either 7:00 p.m. or 11:00 p.m. Eastern on UniMás

- Between five and seven Friday doubleheaders on Univision Deportes on consecutive weeks in May and June, with two hours of ancillary programming around the games

- A weekly MLS wrapup show on Sundays, and a condensed match of the week

- Two exclusive MLS Cup playoff broadcasts

- All U.S. men's national team games

- At least four U.S. women's national team games

- An English-language commentary feed for all MLS and U.S. soccer games via the SAP button on your remote control

- Digital rights to all MLS and U.S. national team games it airs, including an English-language audio option on all live game streams

In total, there will be 102 exclusive MLS national broadcasts. This year, 94 of the 323 season's games are nationally broadcast. We don't know how many games there will be in the 2015 season, but at least there will be an increase in the number of national broadcasts.

There is much more in the Sports Business Journal's in-depth reporting. It is all behind their paywall, but if you have access, it's worth reading. Click here for the main story and here for a detailed story on Univision's role.

It could well be that Univision, which last year had more viewers for the MLS Cup Final than ESPN, is taking the biggest step of all here. It is an over-the-air channel in many cities, and adding an English audio feed will bring in soccer fans who had turned away because they don't speak Spanish.

It will also be important to find out more details on what U.S. Soccer gets from the deal, especially how World Cup qualifiers will be split between ESPN and Fox. Those are the most valuable soccer broadcasts on the American sports landscape among American soccer properties.

As promised above, here's more on ESPN taking over out-of-market distribution rights for MLS games not nationally broadcast.

Earlier Monday, I broke the news that ESPN3 will be taking over MLS Live, the league's online streaming platform for games not nationally televised. You'll now be able to watch those streams through ESPN's website.

Ourand and Botta have more detals on that here. They also report that the Direct Kick out-of-market TV package is going away, though as they note, it has far fewer subscribers than other leagues' TV packages. So that won't be too much of a hit to suffer.

It is an enormous step for the league to take, and one that has the potential to pay very big dividends. Using ESPN3 to bring MLS games directly to the casual soccer fan - and indeed, the greater American sports fan base - will dramatically expand the league's exposure.

ESPN3 offers a wide range of sports content, most notably college football and basketball from the Southeastern, Atlantic Coast and American Athletic Conferences. So if you're an Alabama or Rutgers football fan, or a Duke or Temple basketball fan, you've likely watched a game on ESPN3 at some point.

You've probably also watched plenty of other soccer content through ESPN3 over the years, such as UEFA World Cup and European Championship qualifying. Or if you're a tennis fan, you've watched ESPN3's multi-court coverage of the four grand slams and other tournaments year-round.

Historically, ESPN3's content has been available free of charge with authenticated access through participating internet service providers.

(That is a different tier of service from WatchESPN, the online simulcasts of ESPN's linear TV channels, which requires authenticated access through participating pay-TV providers.)

But I was told Monday, and SBJ later confirmed, that discussions have been ongoing for MLS games on ESPN3 to not follow that model. There could be a paid subscription package for people who don't have ESPN3 access through their ISPs.

More details on how to access ESPN3 content, including a list of participating providers, are available here. In addition to being available via ESPN's website, ESPN3 has apps for iOS, Android and Windows 8 devices, Apple TV, Roku, Xbox Live and Amazon's FireTV.

As I reported Saturday, this was the last major hurdle in the negotiations of the deal. The digital rights to MLS broadcasts are of considerable value. For as much as the dramatic increase in rights money is a commitment to MLS on the field, it also sends a message about the league's potential to grow off the field.

I do not know what will happen to Canadian fans who subscribe to MLS Live, as ESPN3 is geoblocked in Canada. It wouldn't be too hard to lift the geoblock just for ESPN games, but that is just one of many potential options.

Bell Media, MLS' national broadcaster in Canada, has the capacity to run MLS streams through its website and TSN Go app, but will it take that jump? It's not yet known. There could also be a Canada-specific paid online streaming package.

We'll learn more at the press conference Monday afternoon. You can watch it live above. I'll be updating this post throughout the event and afterward with more information.

i've been saying for a long time that ratings won't get better until you take the leap and put it out there for people to watch. it's a catch 22 both ways.

i'm very curious how much money it is worth (i'm sure they won't say) and if this will reflect in the new CBA. can't see how it won't.

Should be noted they cleverly tied the contract into USMNT rights, though, but building a stable time slot and having a league full of American stars definitely helps. Growth into coast to coast TV markets must be attractive, too, and ESPN's own internal polling shows soccer is the next big sport with the kids and I've heard MLB ratings are starting to fall off. So yeah -- ESPN made a nice, big commitment. The players are unquestionably in line for a raise, the only question will be how much, and whether they'll start really exerting leverage on things like guaranteed contracts.

I'm a little confused about the ESPN3 news -- will I still use MLS Live? I love MLS Live, that's how I've watched the league for the last 3 or 4 years. I've used ESPN3 to watch other soccer games before, so hopefully it's an easy transition, but it will definitely be a shift.

But the money, then a USMNT roster that's half MLS (20 played in the league at one point), and the expansion going to 24, Chivas USA just about to disappear, sheeeeeit. Fuck Russian sanctions, Obama needs to be on the phone trying to steal WC '18.

-Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2 broadcasts will be streamed via the FOX Sports GO mobile app and FOXSportsGO.com for desktops
-Univision Deportes broadcasts will be streamed via Univision's digital platforms and mobile apps.

-the "out-of-market package, currently serviced through the MLS Live and MLS Direct Kick packages, will be available to a wider audience via ESPN3 (more than 200 games each season)

In Canada:
-MLS will continue to provide access to hundreds of out-of-market games each year via the MLS LIVE package.

it's been the Roku in the bedroom up till now. It'll just be odd going through the ESPN menus instead of the familiar MLS Live one where I pull up the game and can watch the condensed versions. Really hope they find a way to keep the condensed versions somewhere, that's how I make my own Sportscenter on a Sunday night...

Also, fun note: the guy in the Portland banner pic at the top of the article was kicked out of the stadium for nearly getting into a fight with Jack Jewsbury (b/c he was viciously berating Jack as he entered the locker room tunnel) following Portland's loss to Cal FC in the US Open Cup. That guy sucks.

Uri is the rock in their central mid. He's an above average ball-winner in the league, but his passing is elite. That will be a BIG hole for Peter Vermes to fill.

Also pleased to see the days of MLS guys transferring to Scandinavia are done. Those leagues are beneath us now.

I haven't seen Villa in quite a while, thought he supposedly lost a step with age.

Make it simple for me -- is he better or worse than Robbie Keane right today?

good pick ups for them with Lampard and Villa. as much as people will probably bring up the "retirement league" angle this was a good move for NYCFC being an expansion team.

In response to Reply # 119

Keane's stats:

2011 -- 2 Gs, 1 A in 4 games
2012 -- 16 Gs, 11 As in 28 games
2013 -- 16 Gs, 9 As in 23 games
2014 -- 7 Gs, 3 As in 11 games

The biggest thing with Keane is he came over when he still had some legs left under him. MLS is NOT kind to slow players or unfit players. The best bit of news for Villa is that he has Kreis as his coach, so I have confidence he'll get the best out of him, but this can't be a New York City victory lap for David.

And in twitter commentary yesterday I picked up that Villa never met with personally with Kreis, only Claudio Reyna, which is a marked departure from how Kreis operated at RSL. Kreis would only acquire players he met with personally so he could know they were bought into working hard for excellence in a league where few might notice. So Kreis is just a coach at NYCFC, not the personality steering the whole team.

Villa has been busy to say the least. just finished La Liga season and Champions League Final and is currently training with Spain for the World Cup. doesn't seem unreasonable that he hasn't met with Kreis yet. they were probably trying to get the deal done ASAP. makes sense.

as far as the Keane comparison, i can't call it yet. we all know most players struggle their first season in MLS, especially if they come after the season starts (Defoe being a notable exception). but it seems he will have a full training camp and start the season with NYCFC which can only be good for him/them.

i will admit that all of the donovan posts did also grind my gears a bit and that certainly had a role in the tone of my post.

villa is a marquee signing for the club, has a wealth of experience that few can really match, still has the knack for a killer finish and will have plenty of time to rest up. and i'm sure he will be getting paid. win/win for both sides.

if you thought NYC was gonna get aguero or suarez or immobile or balotelli, welp, sorry that won't be happening at an expansion club in the MLS, let alone one that's already established themselves.

someone else just posted to nighty's rant in the WC GD post about how *hopefully* that particular situation might change in the future, but right now? wrong, wrong, wrong.

EDIT: well, as you already know, the "someone" referred to in the previous paragraph was you. great response to a ridiculous assertion.

It's a great signing. NYCFC has a face they can put out which WILL sell tickets and fingers crossed I'll be watching Villa here in Portland this time next year (non-conference teams only play once, so I might have to wait a year till Villa is in PDX).

I would be more skeptical of Villa coming to New York to take the cash and coast, but with Kreis as coach I'm sure we'll see the best of David. I'm mainly just speculating on the impact he'll have on the field. Keane has been fantastic in MLS, probably the most impactful marquee DP the league has seen yet. If David outperforms Keane for NYCFC, he'll be the MVP of the league. That isn't that easy in this league, and we've seen plenty of others come for a swan song that is all hype and no impact (Djorkaeff, Stoichkov, Nesta, Blanco -- although Blanco's long-balls and set pieces were good).

And I should add I actually think it's incredibly valuable for Kreis, who I think will replace Klinsmann with the USMNT, to have an opportunity to coach a guy like Villa. Kreis will learn from Villa and be better for it, and there's not too many major signings you would give that accolade to. But a WC win, major Barca experience, international reputation ... fantastic for US soccer.

>someone else just posted to nighty's rant in the WC GD post
>about how *hopefully* that particular situation might change
>in the future, but right now? wrong, wrong, wrong.

I know the caliber MLS is targeting. That's part of why Keane has been the best signing yet, because they got Keane when he still had the goods to play very high level in Europe. But Keane, being the man with 20 different boyhood clubs, was willing to take the pay check and live the LA lifestyle. He's really the model of "marquee DP" signings for the league moving forward -- talented, but a bit difficult to mesh into top clubs, a bit selfish and vain, willing to work for a big paycheck.

or just paranoia on players part? to my knowledge Thierry Henry has not really played on turf surfaces since he's been in the league (maybe once in Portland? idk) now Olave is saying that he's not playing this weekend in New England because they have turf and he's got a previous injury. so the question is, how legit are the concerns about playing on turf? i mean, the other team also has to play on it and your teammates as well. how does it work for players to say they're not playing? do coaches just have to deal with it? is there any hard proof that it's worse to play on turf?

In response to Reply # 0

Timbers just beat Sporting Kansas City last night, now they return home to play ... Sporting Kansas City on Friday. By advancing, the Timbers have been drawn to play Seattle on 7/9 in Seattle. They also have a league game four days later ... against Seattle in Seattle. It just cheapens all the fixtures with games only the hardcore care about.

And when it isn't just single elimination MLS play scheduled at terrible times (and cmon we already have the playoffs), it's games like Portland v. Orlando City U23s which just isn't compelling. A few bench guys who aren't that good look great for a night and then the team moves on to games that really matter.

Oh yeah, although the Galaxy did lose to a minor league team last night, but does Bruce Arena or ANYONE ELSE for that matter actually care? No, the Galaxy will be judged on their performance in the league and their reputation will continue to be based on their playoff success. Does anyone even really remember (or care) that DCU won the USOC last year? Blah -- such a dumb competition, I'm excited for when we can finally stop pretending like we care just cuz it's similar to what they have in England.

the draw is the draw. the fact that you play a team in the USOC and then right before or after that in the regular season is inconsequential. it can't be unique to the American setup. the only problem for me at this point is absolutely no TV coverage. trying to watch these streams is torture. it's hard to care about something that you don't know exists.

Similar sort of thing happened with Portland last year, where they played RSL a bunch in a very short stretch because they met in the USOC semifinal. There just aren't enough teams and most teams don't have the depth to make the USOC very worth it, so they just run out reserves and don't really care what the final score is. As the league grows, I guess it has the possibility of getting richer, but mainly it just seems like a needless distraction. I get excited for the playoffs, not USOC.

So now the Timbers have 3 DPs -- a CB, a CAM, and a ST (just inked Adi to a full transfer on a DP deal on Monday). I'm really just struck that I wonder if this indicates an expectation that salary cap structure will be re-imagined in upcoming CBAs, because a DP deal for a CB from a bottom to mid table EPL team seems like a bit of a stretch. We'll see once he gets on the field, but no more DP deals in Portland...

In response to Reply # 0

If you have a Roku, it's really the best. Otherwise watching on CPUs however you're comfortable. If you're curious at all, this is about as good as it gets -- every game available, save local / nat'l blackouts (which are easily circumvented by a proxy), even nat'l games become available via archive two days later. Both highlight replays and "condensed" replays (~15m) that try to tell the story of the game.

If you've got the US soccer bug + you wanna do things like watch Yedlin or Zusi on a weekly basis, curious about guys like Castillo, Nagbe, or Trapp, hard to beat $32 for access to the whole league.

And on my Surface I've been able to watch in the Explorer 8 via mlssoccer.com, but I haven't transferred that over to TV.

My REAL peev is while Microsoft is one of the big sponsors of the league, I can't watch via 360 or XB1, even though WatchESPN and NBA made it to those platforms already.

So, you can take solace that THIS is the year we should win MLS Cup and if we don't, it's a total failure.

What I still can't figure out is how we keep adding more and more players. Are we paying them in sunflower seeds?

the only thing that could make me feel better is if we cut Harrington and Zakuani on the way to the locker room. If we're going to miss the playoffs, why not do it playing Alvas Powell or Taylor Peay? I don't care how many aimless through balls Kalif tries, he's better than Zakuani, and if Porter is seriously starting Zak over a healthy Rodney Wallace there needs to be a Spanish-style inquisition.

We're bad this year. Enough excuses, Caleb. We suck and you've trotted out the same formation, just different personnel, week after week. Don't try to trick us with "tactical directions" or some such shit. We've sucked, but are staying the sucky course despite it all. It's panic time now. Every week without three points is one step closer to missing the playoffs. But whatever, bring on the offseason, we have some deadweight to offload...

i think it's awesome that Will Johnson kept Clint onside. Will Johnson is the biggest shitbag in the MLS...even before he ever touched a Timbers uniform.

The league is reaching a point where it can be preferable to stay as opposed to toiling away at middle to lower tier European leagues, and it doesn't do anything to keep these guys from making an impact on USMNT. This is the promise, the payoff finally, of what value a strong domestic league can have.

Good on KC, it's still on my list to make it to a game there, hopefully I can swing that sometime soon...

I get it. I saw Zakuani play plenty pre-leg break, he was one of the top 10 players in the league, easily. Porter, for whatever reason, keeps thinking that's the player he's putting in the lineup.

Good news is Zak's removal from Friday's win was the catalyst for the Timbers going on to get the three points. Hopefully Porter was paying attention?

168. "Yeah -- Gata's best position = Valeri's best position"
In response to Reply # 166

Gata is really only effective as the 2nd striker, or sitting in the hole between the two wingers. That's also Valeri's best position. They've tried Valeri wide to accommodate Gata, but Valeri just doesn't have the footspeed (his biggest deficit is pace) to be effective as a winger all match. They've tried Gata wide, too, but he struggles with getting involved from wide positions, tends to drift centrally. When they played Gata as the lead striker, he struggled with the correct movements to make the offense work.

So really Gata is best as a substitute, and that's fine. Almost all of his big impact moments have come from the bench, and they've been able to use him as a strong starter in Open Cup, and soon CCL.

LA had bench players playing out of position
the other teams put out whole new teams out in the 2nd half
nobody played their usual starters on either side because nobody wanted injuries.

it really just looked like a nuisance for every MLS team, except maybe the young guys that never get to play, and was generally just a waste of time. A glorified preseason game, completely uncompetitive and meaningless, in the middle of the season. Why would you even buy a ticket when you're not even gonna see any stars playing? It's not like teams like Seattle and SKC can't compete.

Its actually more highlighted this year because now WE'RE resting players.

I'd rather the visiting teams just play each other and then the winner just play the all-star team at the end. At least the All-Star game is exciting despite not really making a ton of sense.

then it is kind of important that the game is competitive, no?

if the intent is to get more casual fans invested in the game here, you'd think MLS teams being competitive in these games would matter, right? otherwise, why should the casual fan watch teams they are supposed to love get blown out? everyone loves a winner.

i get that it's a complicated equation. i'm just asking the question.

IIRC, Sporting KC beating United in a friendly was the catalyst to putting butts in the seats for SKC games. Of course it was one part of a series of events (rebranding, new stadium), but it was the selling point for a lot of "lay-people" becoming fans of the team.

I think SKC was still the Wizards? Maybe it resonated more in other places, but all I picked up was, "it's just a friendly," even from most MLS people (because they knew it was a blip that meant very little, just like this 7-0 game).

SKC took off with a new stadium coinciding with a new brand. I dunno if the ManU game meant all that much. Like do you think people in KC like SKC less cuz they lost to Man City? They're just summer tourist attractions, I don't think they have that much effect on MLS, good or bad.

In response to Reply # 165

I didn't say it was the sole reason, it was just one event in a series of events. It aided the FO to pivot the marketing strategy.

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/07/24/sports/soccer/soccer-in-the-us-heartland-kansas-city-transformed.html?pagewanted=all&_r=0

"Less than a month later, the Wizards played an exhibition against Manchester United at Arrowhead Stadium. More than 50,000 fans bought tickets, but most appeared to be wearing the English team’s colors and cheering for the visitors.

That situation was standard for a match between an M.L.S. team and a European club at the time and yet, despite the crowd’s apparent rooting interest and despite Kansas City’s having a player ejected after only a half-hour, the Wizards pulled off a stunning upset, beating United by 2-1. At the final whistle, the fans — many still wearing Manchester United gear — exploded with glee. “The next day our phones literally went down because so many people were calling,” Heineman said.

Determined to capitalize, the club increased its attention on attracting younger fans. Its approach was simple: in a city where the Chiefs and the Royals play in older stadiums and have played poorly for a long time, “the 18-to-35 demographic here didn’t grow up with much success from those brands,” Heineman said."

Personally, I don't watch the games even when they're on TV. They're worse than like NFL preseason even, at least those guys are fighting for roster spots.

As far as the fallout, there's no winning either way. When a team wins (like KC did against Man Utd, or Portland v. Norwich, and I think Juve lost to an MLS team, too) people say it's just a friendly. When it's lopsideed the other way, people say it's an indictment of MLS. Well those people were going to think that regardless, even if MLS went undefeated in the summer.

Anyone with sense just looks at the money and sees it for what it is -- big money against small money, which is a good chance for small money to make some cash. Hopefully MLS teams will have the finances to stop pandering to the lay-fan soon enough...

I'll never understand how Oduro has been one of the most traveled journeymen of recent memory. Toronto enjoying the benefit of the new romance right now, Dom is the best player on the pitch in this SKC v. TFC match today.

Sounders have a key defensive injury happen like 15 minutes before the game so the defense is in disarray AND Galaxy just got their dicks handed to them 7-0 and got ripped a new asshole by Arena. On top of that the Sounders haven't played much in the last few weeks.

i saw this coming a mile away even before the injury. that just made it worse.

Whatever the standings are, the top 3 teams in the West are Seattle, RSL, and LA. After that, I'm not at all confident Portland are good enough to land in the top 5 at the end of the year -- Vancouver, Colorado, and Dallas are all just about as frisky as we are. Should be a good playoff race in the West this year.

In response to Reply # 175

MLS has made it a priority to no longer be seen as a "bargain" league. The league office knows more than anybody that their domestic players are just as good as foreign prospects, the only difference is perception and the amount of $ involved. So to help recoup the very healthy investment they've made in youth development, the league has started to make sure to bargain up all fees. It's the same thing that held up the Geoff Cameron transfer for a bit, based on chatter on the ESPN broadcast last night, sounds like a similar situation with Yedlin.

Of course, with every passing week, the WC glow fades and Yedlin's weak positioning and frequently unthreatening delivery show more and more, so I'm sure any buyers are hearing back from scouts looking at more than just his 115 minutes in Brazil.

In response to Reply # 178

At least I'm pretty sure it's 75%. I know they made a change to incentivize clubs to invest in youth development by letting them individually profit from the sale of a player. All player contracts are with the league, though, so all transfers are ultimately negotiated by the office in NY, although obviously the teams surely have some input.

In response to Reply # 180

Besler played 4 games in Brazil. But the phone isn't ringing off the hook in Salt Lake, because foreign scouts somehow need World Cup fever to recognize that Matt Besler, MLS defender of the year recently, was good enough to hang in big money leagues. Would it strike anyone else that if Besler + Yedlin are in demand, maybe the league has other players ready to contribute at a higher level? Nope, they need 115m of that World Cup glow to suddenly think of Yedlin as a darling. So dumb.

http://www.mlssoccer.com/news/article/2014/07/30/players-perspective-ex-mlser-bobby-warshaw-promise-and-peril-moving-europe

Player's Perspective: Ex-MLSer Bobby Warshaw on the promise & peril of moving to Europe

Editor's Note: Originally drafted by FC Dallas in the first round of the 2011 SuperDraft, Bobby Warshaw spent more than two years in Major League Soccer before moving to Sweden, where he currently plays for GAIS. A former academic standout at Stanford University, he has also written for Deadspin.com and PennLive.com. His viewpoints do not necessarily represent that of the editorial staff of MLSsoccer.com.

I’ve seen the promised land, y'all. And it’s not all the roses, butterflies, and girls in bikinis drinking mojitos on park benches many of you might think.

Americans like to imagine European football as a glorious amusement park because that's the version we see on TV. Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich. Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney. The best of the best, in giant stadiums with incredible crowds and mesmerizing play. Heaven on earth, just a short flight away.

It’s time to adjust our thinking a little bit. European football means a broad range of things, and 99 percent of them aren’t nearly as appealing as Old Trafford, the Zlatan goal you saw on YouTube or Balotelli’s Bentley. There might be a heaven here, but it’s pretty hard to find.

So when World Cup stars Matt Besler and Graham Zusi re-signed with Sporting Kansas City last week, we shouldn’t have been surprised. Going to Europe isn’t an automatic decision anymore. It’s a much more calculated assessment.

Don’t get me wrong. If a club like Arsenal calls, you pack a carry-on and get on the next flight. Then you text Arsene Wenger and tell him you’ll play for free. But the Arsenals of the world aren't calling about many MLS players. So our American players have a little more to think about.

When a player like me tries to move to Europe, he uses a CV -- a piece of paper, just like you would use if applying for a job as a sales assistant. Kinda anticlimactic, isn’t it? He writes his name, his previous clubs, his stats, and his attributes. Then his agent sends it to a sporting director or a friend with a connection to a club.

Sporting directors get thousands of CVs a year. On the off chance they like what they see on paper, they might look at videos or ask around. Maybe a trial follows, maybe it works out in the end.

But for right now – for any number of reasons, really – MLS resumes don't jump to the top of the stack for the big teams out there.

Of course, Zusi and Besler don't need to send out their CVs. Traditionally, a star player on an MLS club can garner interest from mid-level European teams, which means he would make the equivalent to a medium Designated Player contract, fight for playing time, and struggle with a language that sounds like parsel-tongue from Hogwarts.

It’s a long way from the glory of El Clásico.

The opportunity then is to succeed at the smaller club and move up. Think about Michael Bradley's path from Heerenveen to Möchengladbach to Chievo to Roma. Or Charlie Davies's pre-injury path from Hammarby to Sochaux. It can happen, but there's a reason only a handful of American players have had that trajectory: It's extremely difficult. For players of any country. I applaud anyone that goes for it, but it’s an incredible challenge.

Young players want that challenge, because when you’re young, you still think you can conquer the world. You'll go wherever because you believe that you can and will fight your way up. You've got time and development on your side. Anything – Roma, Chelsea, Real Madrid – is possible. You don't think about learning the language or fitting into the different culture, or a coaching change or an injury.

As fans, though, we should be wary of our young stars making big jumps. It’s exciting, but it’s risky. These days joining a lower-tier club in a big league or a big club in a lower-tier league is not necessarily an improvement over an MLS club. The next big star can be quickly forgotten – by fans and by Jurgen Klinsmann – if he doesn't see playing time against top competition.

For Besler and Zusi, the risk isn't worth the reward. They’re both 27 years old and established at their clubs, and the idea that they need to go to Europe to get better is wishful thinking. A few older players have seen success after transfering abroad -- Geoff Cameron at Stoke, Brian McBride at Fulham – but the rest of those who made it there – Claudio Reyna, DaMarcus Beasley, Clint Dempsey, Bradley, etc. – all went over at a younger age, when their games were still being shaped and when MLS was a very different league.

The things that make a 27-year-old play better are sharpness and confidence. Besler and Zusi aren't going to go to Germany or England and get better at passing and shooting, especially if they don't get playing time, which is always a risk at a new club, both at home and abroad.

And more importantly, what will make them happy? Many US fans want to be able to say our players perform for the best teams in the world, but when you’re the player making the decision, you have to think about what makes you happy.

That’s not always easy to find.

I’ve been uncomfortable playing abroad. I’ve been lonely and confused in a foreign country. It’s really hard to play well. You lose a split second trying to think of the correct native word to communicate with your teammate. You have a bad training session and you go sit alone in your apartment, unable to distract yourself or let it go. There’s a lot to be gained – both personally and for football development – but I couldn’t tell you it’s more valuable than being comfortable and happy.

There’s something special about playing with guys you like, in front of people you care about, for a cause that means something to you. There’s a little extra drive in your step, conviction in your heart. When Besler talks about the importance of playing for the diehard fans in Kansas City or captaining his hometown team, that goes a long way in how he plays.

Ambition and seeking a challenge sound wonderful, but it’s a tough slope. Not playing and struggling to assimilate sucks. It makes you unhappy. It makes you forget what ambition is or why you wanted it in the first place. Why would you leave a place you know that you can succeed, where you are comfortable, for something that might not be better?

Arsenal? Hell yes! West Ham? Let me call you back.

If the Besler and Zusi decisions tell us anything, it’s that for guys in that top tier of MLS, there just isn’t as much incentive to make the jump across to Europe anymore. It’s gotten to the point where the likes of Sporting KC, Seattle, RSL, etc., are as attractive as the European clubs that would consider MLS players.

Suddenly, players choosing to stay in MLS doesn’t say as much about the ambitions of the players as it does about the quality of the league.

Besler and Zusi showed at the World Cup that they can compete with some of the world’s best, and even though it makes some US fans feel better to say their players play in England, now we can watch Premier League level players in our own backyard.

Maybe the new challenge for American players isn't to thrive in Europe, but to help make MLS Europe's equal. Instead of being an export league, why not make it into a destination, truly shooting for the stars. That'd be pretty cool, huh?

Players I know in MLS are happy for Besler and Zusi. They got paid, and they got their respect. They deserve it.

I would have signed the deal to stay, too. And then I would have thrown a giant party. With Oklahoma Joe’s barbecue and Dom Perignon. Now that’s a promised land.

is a mistake right now.

He's too raw. He has flashes of brilliance at times but he's not consistent enough to get consistent minutes on a club like that.

He'll end up going there and getting depressed most likely and may never find the form he could find if he stays here for 3 or 4 more season. THEN, if the opportunity is still there he should go to Europe if he wants.

he still has room to grow in MLS. He has all the tools to dominate on a weekly basis, but he's not quite there yet. He still needs to get the reps so his decision making is consistent and he needs to just keep training until he's pulling out the best touches ALL the time in games, not just some of the time.

But that's also why I liked the structure of a potential Roma deal that included a loan. Let him work in MLS with the prize in mind, then hopefully he'll be really ready to go when he reaches Italy. But yeah, if he goes to the wrong situation where he's just left out and isolated, he could end up being a "flop" if the coaches aren't supportive or understanding as he continues to grow.

John Strong is just plain over-prepared and so good at calling soccer. The dude is the Al Michaels of MLS and American soccer in general. He needs to be THE voice of MLS going forward, and should be calling USMNT games, too. Kyle Martino is great at the sideline role, plus his history with the league makes him the best color guy around. These two dudes are just wasted on EPL. ESPN needs to get them under the umbrella ASAP in advance of their MLS deal.

And then NBC has great camerawork on every important action, their sound on the stands makes it feel lively through everything. They're really just great at soccer. It's gonna suck so much when MLS moves to ESPN, unless they can soak up some of NBC's soccer talent...

In response to Reply # 0

Big, big, step in making the jump to MLS. Even though RepublicFC's attendance was stellar, I didn't think they would've been in serious consideration for expansion. The city is riding a high after Vivek&Co were able to keep the Kings in town and construction began on the new arena last Friday. Not only would their involvement in MLS be attractive to Garber, but it should make it easier to figure something out regarding a downtown soccer-specific stadium in Sacramento.

Marcos Breton: Kings owners in talks to buy Sacramento’s Republic FC soccer club

By MARCOS BRETON
mbreton@sacbee.com

Published: Sunday, Aug. 3, 2014 - 12:00 am

Last Modified: Monday, Aug. 4, 2014 - 8:46 am

Even as they begin building a new downtown arena, the owners of the Kings are in discussions to expand their footprint in the region by buying Sacramento Republic FC – the minor league soccer team selling out games locally since April.

There is no agreement in place yet between the Kings and the Republic, but the Kings owners are interested in the idea of investing in the franchise and elevating it to the level of Major League Soccer, America’s premier soccer league, according to sources with knowledge of the talks. They declined to speak publicly because the deal isn’t completed.

This week, Kings President Chris Granger will travel to Portland to meet with MLS officials along with current Republic owner Warren Smith. Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is also expected to attend the meeting, scheduled for Wednesday.

A source close to Kings majority owner Vivek Ranadive said he sees soccer as a “tremendous opportunity for a larger vision of growth in Sacramento.” Soccer also fits with Ranadive’s interest of investing in sports that can create excitement not only locally but also internationally.

The prospect of Ranadive and the Kings suddenly materializing as legitimate players in a Sacramento pitch to MLS caps a dizzying few months for the little soccer team started by Smith, a former River Cats executive.

From the beginning, Smith planned on laying the groundwork for MLS by creating excitement around a minor league team in Sacramento that was built to grow. Part of that plan was to use the success of the Republic to entice investors and the capital needed to run an MLS franchise.

It worked. The Republic has drawn more than 118,000 fans to its games this year, smashing the attendance record of their current league, USL Pro. At the same time, the Sacramento market produced some of the highest TV ratings in America for the recent World Cup.

“Clearly the support for the Republic has been noticed by all of us,” said Dan Courtemanche, executive vice president of communications for MLS. “It’s been incredible what we’ve seen week in and week out.”

Amid growing momentum, Smith began quietly talking to minority Kings owner Kevin Nagle, a successful businessman based in El Dorado Hills. Nagle, in turn, began talking to his partners with the Kings. It was then that talks between the Kings and the Republic intensified.

In an interview, Nagle said: “It makes all the sense in the world to figure out how to align collectively – soccer and basketball,” Nagle said. “It would enable us to take advantage of all the synergies available in marketing and sponsorships … To be a better enterprise to respond to the wants and needs of our fans.”

The full weight of the Kings franchise would be in line with a trend of investment in soccer by major owners in traditional American sports.

Groups including the New York Yankees of Major League Baseball and the Atlanta Falcons of the NFL own new MLS franchises in New York and Atlanta.

Courtemanche said the league hopes to expand from its current 22 teams to 24 by 2020. MLS has committed a 23rd franchise to Miami if former soccer superstar David Beckham can build a downtown stadium there – though Miami officials have twice rejected a Beckham stadium plan.

That leaves Sacramento in competition with cities such as Minneapolis, San Antonio and Las Vegas for the 24th franchise.

Though not as costly as an NBA franchise, an MLS franchise fee would not come cheap for a Sacramento group. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that Arthur Blank, owner of the Atlanta Falcons, paid $70 million for an Atlanta franchise set to begin MLS play in 2017.

A Sacramento group will meet with MLS officials in Portland this week for its nationally televised All-Star game on Wednesday.

Sources said the Sacramento officials hope to formally schedule a visit to the region by MLS officials, perhaps this fall. The MLS board of governors will meet in September, and some in the Sacramento group hope to have a new Republic ownership team and the outline of a stadium plan in place by then. A location for the stadium has not been determined yet.

The source close to Ranadive cautioned that the deal “has to make sense” to the Kings but that interest in acquiring the soccer franchise is strong.

Ranadive’s group paid more than $500 million to buy the Kings last year and has pledged to spend as much on surrounding development near a new arena slated to open in 2016 at the old Downtown Plaza. The Kings are contributing $222 million to the arena, with the city putting in $255 million. On Friday, Johnson presided at the beginning of demolition work at the faded mall adjacent to blighted buildings at Seventh and K streets. Also last week, the Kings signed a lucrative television deal worth a reported $700 million over 20 years.

Smith said he’s confident his MLS dream can happen. “We’re trying to do something really good for the community,” he said. “It’s very exciting.”

his reaction was uncalled for. i can understand you're not exactly happy, but he didn't need to keep being salty about it even after the game was over. the fouls were tough, but not malicious. and they certainly wouldn't have been Caleb's fault anyway.

regardless, the game was entertaining. that's really about all you can ask for. result doesn't mean anything either way. Bradley Wright-Phillips is moving up into my top 5 Red Bulls list with a bullet.

I don't give a fuck. Those dudes just touring over here trying to colonize American soccer fandom anyway. They should expect some fight from the guys they're playing against.

And while the tackles aren't great, would Pep have the same reaction if they happened in one of the stupid Guiness Cup games? Because they were just soccer. His ass was salty cuz they lost and the MLS guys enjoyed beating them too much. And taking it out on Caleb, who's been saying Pep is one of his idols, is just silly childishness.

Stay in Germany next year Bayern. We have plenty of World Cup stars (who just whooped your ass) on our own.

In response to Reply # 202

check the standings to see where the teams are to get a better representation of where they are right now. also check more for rivalries (SEA v POR, RBNY v DCU, LA v SJ, etc). those tend to be better contests regardless of current standings.

and of course, ya know, bad games happen. former co-worker is a British gent and life long West Ham United fan. he wanted me to get into them so i agreed to watch a game with him. afterward he was like, "so what'd you think?" i was like, "you don't want to know" (i forget who they were even playing). i think they got relegated that year (this was a couple years ago).

204. "SKC is good by playing an extremely physical press"
In response to Reply # 202

They're not "good" like Arsenal or Barca. They're good because they have an extremely organized, extremely physical press. Saw a stat recently about the number of turnovers forced in the league and SKC is a big outlier on the high end, turn the opponent over more than anyone. Then they take the turnover and ram it down the other team's throat. It's not a pretty style, but Peter Vermes has made it extremely effective. They were a *bit* more possession oriented to start the year, but then they sold their holding #6 to ... Lisbon? Porto? A team in Portugal anyway.

Vancouver, on the other hand, are the biggest speed merchants in MLS at the moment. They have one solid attacking mid, Pedro Morales, who was in Serie A last year, and it's his job to just spray it around for the thoroughbreds to run onto. They play extremely direct. I usually like watching Vancouver, because I like watching the young guys run. They're FAST.

I didn't watch SKC v. VAN (just the highlights), but I thought about it. One team trying to run directly behind, the other trying to break up play and counter, an interesting contrast for the low-end tactics junkies out there like me. Looked like the speed of Vancouver's direct play won out, but yeah, I can see how it would look like a lot of errors and not much else. It's really just two teams trying to capitalize on those, attacks breaking down quickly wouldn't really phase either side.

Mainly I just like the production MLS is doing on these things. Please more of these for playoff games and maybe some tight regular season ones, too. There's drama in all these contests, don't just need the stars to be able to edit together a good little capsule like this.

is so fucking bullshit.

Sorry, I hate the Open Cup, that stupid 120' game marred our last road game in Seattle, and now we have a whirlwind pan-hemispheric adventure to get us prepped for the Sounders again. It's crap.

I want playoffs, because playoffs give us a shot at the MLS Championship, which is the only competition people actually care about. If we miss the playoffs because of dumb crap like Guyana and 120' games at Starfire ... yeah, those competitions are second tier. I care about league games first.

Hopefully it's a breeze and they already had a rotation plan (10 guys straight back to PDX to prep for Seattle), but it's gonna sting if we come flat against Seattle. We need the Seattle game more than this Guyana game right now. Needed the NE one, too, but the fucking linesman...

Jones wants Chicago, but the league is busy making up rules so it's not clear if that's where he'll end up. But per twitter, Jones has signed a contract with HQ in NYC. American soccerati going to have a feast with the bizarre league rules no matter how this plays out.

edit: saw conflicting reports on whether JJ has actually signed or not. such a silly song and dance. JJ, you're old, and nice job in Brazil but you just don't move the needle as much as guys like Clint or Bradley. Either commit to the league and it's bizarre Americanisms or go chase another paycheck in Turkey.

Doesn't make sense to me. Outside of Cubo, Rosales was the only player I really rated on Chivas USA. Reo-Coker has been a decent midfielder in MLS, but from what I understand his price tag is inflated. He's serviceable, but not game-changing, and costs too much money.

Also should be fun seeing Mauro's reception in Seattle now that he's on a rival.

Adi has been okay, but struggled to score for the past two months or so. Maxi Urruti is a harder worker when pressuring the ball, and while people slam Maxi basically whenever he doesn't score, he has the same high work rate on offense that opens up space for our midfielders (but peoplee generally don't see the value of off-the-ball work as easily).

Not to say I dislike Adi. I think Adi is great, but Maxi has been on better form. As far as those two late goals, I think it has plenty to do with Rodney Wallace, who should be starting 100% of the time over Gata Fernandez. But yeah, Adi is in the middle of the dreaded "MLS transition" right now, so I'm fine if he's used as a sub till he settles all the way in.

And then have Sacramento and Atlanta enter the league at the same time (with Chivas being relocated to Sacramento) to bring it to 22 teams, then work towards the 24th expansion team while Beckham gets Miami sorted.

although don't trash the East too much -- Toronto has shown they're willing to spend, Columbus has new, hungry ownership and a strong pedigree, Philadelphia is slowly finding their way, what they really need is some continuity. As long as Montreal and Chicago are entrusting their long-term future to guys like Yallop and Klopas, though, those teams don't seem to grasp the upward trajectory the league is on.

But SKC and Houston are good. There's realistically 6 teams for 5 playoff slots this year (and the play-in game means just one bonus game for the team on the wrong form right at the end), but adding SKC and Houston will make it 8 teams for 5 slots. Colorado has shown real promise, but they'll have a harder time keeping pace. Timbers obviously care, but with a couple bad months that could drop a team right out.

So yeah, will be interesting to see how the East teams respond. At this point, Toronto will have NO excuse not to be able to finish in the top 3 in the East, but then again Jason Kreis is coming back with that Arab money supporting him... I'll be watching, be entertained either way. Oh, and I'll be apoplectic if the Timbers EVER drop points to Chicago or Montreal moving forward.

but then when it does prudent, justifiable (if draconian and largely unprecedented in other major American sports leagues) stuff like "suspending" Chivas (which they did before with San Jose, to great effect, as that team nears the opening of its new stadium and Houston Dynamo has established a strong brand and presence in Texas) and no one complains about this.

The draconian, ham-fisted, single-entity-ness of this all is the same thing as forcing Jermaine Jones to play in New England or screwing up the Kljestan deal because Columbus had his rights, even if he wanted to play in LA. I'm pretty much fine with all that, just like I'm fine with this, funny how I don't see much of an outcry about a team being purchased by the league, then canceled.

end of story. if there was someone to buy the club and rebrand it they would have found them by now. the Galaxy own L.A. and there's no sign that they even want another team there. the Galaxy fans should extend the olive branch to Chivas supporters to welcome them in and just dead the whole situation.

Sacramento on the other hand is breaking records AND playing well right now. they absolutely deserve the nod. i don't think anyone would be upset about them being included in the league.

Sacramento Republic FC releases plans for soccer stadium in downtown railyard

By Ryan Lillis and Dale Kasler

Sacramento Republic FC, the city’s popular minor-league soccer club, announced Wednesday it has reached an agreement to acquire land in the downtown railyard for a new 20,000-seat soccer stadium that could host a Major League Soccer franchise.

The announcement came on the eve of a scheduled visit by top executives with MLS. Those officials will arrive in town Thursday afternoon to begin an intense two-day assessment of Sacramento’s viability as an expansion market for the nation’s premier professional soccer league.

Republic FC said it was purchasing land in the northeast corner of the downtown railyard for its stadium. Larry Kelley, the local developer who is acquiring the 240-acre railyard, will join Republic FC’s investor group, contingent upon the team landing a spot in MLS. The team’s purchase of land in the railyard for a stadium also hinges upon whether the city is granted an MLS expansion team.

“The railyard is a once-in-a-lifetime project that will transform our city and region,†said Kevin Nagle, the lead investor in Republic FC’s expansion bid. “The soccer stadium will serve as a catalyst of this development and be a key attraction for recruiting a vibrant workforce to live, work and play in our city.â€

Drawings of the stadium released by Republic FC show that the facility would be situated east of Seventh Street where it runs through the planned railyard development. Railyards Boulevard, the main east-west thoroughfare in the railyard, is just to the south of the stadium site.

A map of the stadium site shows a light-rail station one block away from the facility, on Seventh Street. A grassy hill would sit on the northern edge of the stadium, giving fans a view of the field and the downtown skyline. Republic FC’s practice facility would be located a block away.

Nagle said the facility could be used for events besides soccer, including other sports and concerts.

Questions remain over how the stadium will be financed. Mayor Kevin Johnson has said no city money will be used to help build the facility. Nagle has said the Republic FC investor group will have the capacity to pay for the stadium, plus a league expansion fee of at least $70 million.

“We feel very comfortable with where we are,†Nagle said. “When we talk to MLS over the next couple of days, I think we’ll have a very strong story to tell and will be able to provide them information and the pathway to deliver a privately financed stadium.â€

Sacramento is in a tight race with Minneapolis for the 24th spot in MLS. Las Vegas and San Antonio are also considered contenders as the league plans to add one more team by 2020.

MLS Deputy Commissioner Mark Abbott and other top executives plan to visit the railyard while in Sacramento. They will also attend a fan rally Thursday in midtown and visit Downtown Plaza, where a new Kings arena is under construction a mile from the soccer stadium site.

League officials also plan to visit Elk Grove, where city officials and a group led by former Assembly Speaker Fabian Núñez are making their own bid for an expansion franchise. The City Council in Elk Grove has agreed to buy land for a stadium near Highway 99.

The Sacramento contingent has said it has the edge. Abbott and other MLS officials have expressed the league’s desire to have teams located in urban areas.

Republic FC also has what it says is the kind of deep-pocketed ownership group that meets MLS standards. That group is lead by Nagle, the co-founder and vice chairman of Envision Pharmaceutical Holdings, a drug-distribution company that does $3.5 billion in business annually. He is also a major investor in El Dorado Town Center, a shopping and office district.

Envision was sold last year to an investor group for $935 million. Nagle would not discuss his share of that transaction, but told The Sacramento Bee last week he is worth “hundreds of millions of dollars.â€

Nagle and Kelley are also both investors in the group that purchased a controlling interest of the Sacramento Kings last year, blocking the team’s proposed move to Seattle. Nagle said additional local investors in Republic FC would be announced, perhaps as early as this week.

Kelley built the Stanford Ranch development in Rocklin and transformed McClellan Air Force Base into a private industrial park. He expects to close this fall on the deal to buy the downtown railyard from Inland American Real Estate Trust, an Illinois firm that acquired the site after the previous developer defaulted on its debt.

Kelley is planning to develop the railyard into a mix of housing, entertainment, retail, office space, theaters, parks and hotels. The site is said to be the largest plot of undeveloped land in the downtown of any major American city. Millions of dollars have already been spent cleaning up the site and building infrastructure, including roads and bridges.

“We couldn’t have a better partner in Republic FC for what will be this region’s most important real estate project in 100 years,†Kelley said. “Sporting and culture events add to our civic amenities, quality of life and attract people to our region; both to live and invest. In addition to building a stadium with the club, I am also honored to be a part of their bid for MLS expansion and join its ownership group.â€

Kelley said a handful of sites in the railyard were examined for a soccer stadium, but that the northeast corner became the only logical choice because of the size of the stadium’s footprint and the limitations imposed by streets and other infrastructure. The stadium would sit on a 10-acre parcel and would have a north-south orientation to avoid problems with early-evening sun, Kelley said.

Kelley said he declined an invitation by Republic FC President Warren Smith to invest in the team when the franchise was getting off the ground. “It wasn’t major-league sports,†he said.

But as Republic FC began zeroing in on the railyard as a stadium site, Kelley said jumping in as a potential investor became a natural.

“I just have that much confidence in (Nagle) and Warren,†he said. “If you look at what Warren has accomplished with the Republic, it’s amazing.â€

That old one really is dated, even if it's sweetly familiar. This one feels more like something that can age well, not a bad time to roll it out in the 20th year. I dig it. Now bang out that CBA guys...

sorry but that's boring. i'm all for a new logo, but a twist on the original would have been better. where's the soccer ball? what are the 3 stars about? nah, not feeling it. it'll have to grow on me i guess.

clearly with the custom logos, they're looking for it to accent and not take over which i think a logo should do most times. especially something like this thats gonna have a lot of stuff around it

when you make a logo like this, it can live on its own, but it pairs well with big event titles. You can go all out designing something for something and not have the logo just look tacked on. i always felt like the old logo must have been a bitch to design around. it just looked so dated.

In response to Reply # 236

and putting a ball in your logo to note you're a league that players with balls (and an outdated soccer ball pattern that no one in the world even plays with to boot) has been pretty bush league for a while.

But that said, it's pretty hilarious looking at all this negativity on twitter (from what I can only call "the usual suspects"). These same people threw a fit when the Timbers rolled out their new logo, didn't stop that logo from spreading all over Portland. They spent days patting each other on the back for their Sporting Kansas City jokes, now SKC is a model brand not just in the league, but outside it as well. To see these people knee-jerk in the usual negative fits, when like you said, the end result is it's just going to become normal and you'll simply "adjust" at the very least, if not come to associate positively with it.

Not saying you have to like it, but it's not going away. I'm into the simplicity of it as a result, less for me to fixate over going forward, and I think coloring it to each jersey is a cool, novel touch. Like I've had a hard time adjusting to the new Earthquakes logo (also widely derided, although did you SEE what it replaced?!), but I think that's because that one is just too busy. Every time I see it another weird design choice jumps out, I've never been able to see it and just process it without much thought.

So this one just being simple, simple, simple -- I really like it. And the dumbass ball had to go.

i get it that no one actually uses that ball in competition anymore, but everyone around the world knows what that means when they see it. Google "soccer ball" and that's the image that comes up. the UEFA Champions League and leagues around the world use it in their logo.

i don't know, just gonna take some getting used to for me. very small on the importance scale honestly.

In response to Reply # 0

it's never been done in MLS, but apparently they're going for it. they've already got the USOC title and they're in prime position for the Supporters Shield. the hardest part of course would be the MLS Cup.

the double is more probable for the Sounders as long as they hold on to their SS lead for the remainder of the season. the double has been done in various forms 10 times by 5 different clubs.

1996 DC United (MLSC, USOC)
1997 DC United (SS, MLSC)
1998 Chicago Fire (USOC, MLSC)
1999 DC United (SS, MLSC)
2000 Sporting KC (SS, MLSC)
2002 LA Galaxy (SS, MLSC)
2003 Chicago Fire (SS, USOC)
2005 LA Galaxy (MLSC, USOC)
2008 Columbus Crew (SS, MLSC)
2011 LA Galaxy (SS, MLSC)

and Sigi pulling this off by re-uniting with Chad Marshall from his Columbus days would be pretty amazing. I thought Sigi was in way over his head last year, but now it's September and we here...

and I talked shit on the Marshall deal, but he would get my vote for Defender of the Year right now. Seattle's been impressive, it has to be said.

great offense, great defense, great goalkeeping. all against arguably the best team in the leauge. i just wish we played at this level all the time. i'm glad we can get up for the big games, but we need to treat every game like a big game. especially now in the stretch playoff run.

i know Henry's future is uncertain but i think we have a solid core for the future. we almost have to get BWP a DP slot next season. i'm also liking what i'm seeing from our younger guys like Oyongo and Duvall. hopefully we can keep it up.
