ESPN isnt in the business of anything but appealing to the basest cross section of the public

They might have convinced some ppl otherwise, but ESPN sucks and something like this would have been out of left field coming from them

Because his story pretty much was the classic case of the black quarterback's predicament.

You do everything possible in college (i.e. winning the Heisman, winning a national championship, going undefeated), and yet a BUM like Heath Shuler goes in the first round (3rd pick no less)...

Still SMDH on that one. Washington had that pick and it was lining up that we could of had Charlie Ward, favorite college player at that time, under center.

THAT is the story of the Black Quarterback in a nutshell. he just chose to play in the NBA instead of "go to Canada" like Warren Moon.

That phrase, "go to Canada" has a very specific meaning for black quarterbacks and black NFL fans...

Still reading the article. It is great to have this, though.

It earns them hipster points so that they can be even

That's hipster economics

The personal stories, like his dad living in DC but refusing to root for racist ass George Marshall and the R*dskins was serious shit.

The overview of the institutional racism in the Joe Lillard entry was good but a hard read.

I see you, George Halas, Art Rooney and Tim Mara.

Also, didn't know about this book:

athletes wanted to ball for him. and that's the reason why a lot of blacks hated the cowboys in his era.
i think adderley played for both coaches but he was describing how segregated landrys locker room was compared to lombardis and how landry fostered that attitude on his teams
i wonder when that attitude shifted or if landry himself changed over the years

and the Cowboys were 'America's (read: White) team'.

So to move to the DMV and see folks vehemently defending the Skins logo and then talking to folks who were just as vehemently hating on Jack Kent Cooke and the Skins was a mind trip.

Quote from his Dad was on point... This is the Black QB Experience!

"He couldn't eat," his father told the Miami News in 1972. "He was losing weight. There was a lot of anxiety involved, and there still is. All eyes are upon him. I told him to expect to be scrutinized, to expect to have his mistakes blown all out of proportion. But it's impossible to adjust to the pressure involved. Maybe he'll never completely adjust."

And him brokering the ban on black players AND THEN changing the name of his team to Redskins, AND THEN being the last team to integrate, brings the whole name change thing full circle.

Black players today, should join the cause and speak out to have the name changed. This man was obviously racist through and through. Shown in his actions and words, and he is the man who named the team what it is today. All of that BS about it honoring Native American Heritage, and being a symbol of all things good and honorable, blah, blah, blah... Yeah I'm sure THIS GUY, was thinking about all of that when he gave the team its name. Right after banning black players from playing in the league, riiiiiight!

Signs of progress right there!

Also reading the Jim Mora part on the Michael Vick chapter reminds me that he actually has 3 black QBs on the UCLA roster now (versus 1 white scholarship QB), so much so that he could move his 4th black QB to WR and not accuse him of being racist.

Not sure it was WC level but it was close.

Anyway I swear in school all the time he'd be like, "I'm telling you, the Rams are gonna win the Super Bowl in the next 5 years" and I'd just be like "Oh hell no, your QB is Tony Banks... TONY BANKS???" And I make fun of him even though my Raiders were starting Donald Hollas at that point.

Long story short, the next season the Rams sign Trent Green, and then he gets hurt and some guy named Kurt Warner steps in, and the Rams won the Super Bowl. I pretty much had to wear til we graduated high school.

(Side note, that last Tony Banks Rams team's LEADING rusher ran for 313 yards on the season... how is that even possible?)

The best measure of any organization's progress on race is how it treats the middling talents, the placeholders (For much more on this, see the Charlie Batch entry below.) Banks is little remembered now, except for his famously weak grip on the ball (36 fumbles in his first two seasons), but he was perhaps the first plainly inferior black quarterback to be granted the privileges of tenure. He was an NFL quarterback simply by virtue of having been an NFL quarterback.

We tend to look at social justice as a series of heroic steps taken by great men as they impose their will on a broken status quo and lead us closer to Canaan. That's the Jackie Robinson part of the story. But the story needs its Tony Bankses, too, the ones who didn't have to prove themselves, the ones who could suck entirely on their own terms.

"First of all, he's the best athlete to ever play the position. Sammy Baugh might be right there with him. I hope Randall can win like Sammy. But Randall could probably lead the league in punting. He's the best runner in the league, and if you can't see he can throw the football, I won't waste my time with you. I heard some of that black crap: 'Move him to wide receiver, move him to defensive back.' I don't hear those voices too much anymore. I go with what I know. I've been around professional football for 27 years. So I don't screw up too much."Buddy Ryan, Eagles coach

I watched him play both positions at FSU in person

He played WR instead of QB because he was dominant at one, and mediocre at the other

Of all places, FSU would have started him if he had been better than Weinke or Rix. On top of that hey started a Black qb in the Sugar Bowl anyways.

A lot of history in here and I agree that this should be pressed up in a book and even done as a documentary.

I also have to note that this Marcus Vick shit was funny...

"Future Hall of Famer in WorldStar Hip Hop's Greatest Weed Carriers wing. His one season in the league was a blip in an otherwise sterling career as his brother Michael's shit-stirrer."

prolific Black QB (McNabb) behind Moon gets such a shitty write up?

How can anyone with half a brain watching the Eagles during the McNABB years say that BS?

Other than the T.O. year and the 2008 year and 2006 year HE WAS THEEEE OFFENSE.

Expected to do more with less(the dilemma or Black folk in a nutshell)

The faux controversy?

THE WANTING A BLACK QB to be successful

the Sellout comments by the NAACP nitwit Mondishire(however you spell it)

The smell breath ingrates of Philly sports media and radio shitting on homie for navigating around their bs from his rookie season to final year in Philly.

Dude should get a metal for maintaining his sanity because I would have called everyone of them out PUBLICALLY(SEE Kareem Abdul Jabbar)

turned out of Joe Gilliam had've won those four superbowls in the 70s instead of Terry Bradshaw....

would it have made a difference in terms of how fast teams would've given blk qbs an opportunity?
