"Congrats to all the michigan lolverine fans on OKS"
Sun Dec-29-13 01:50 AM by guru0509

11 losses in two years (& lost at least five games in five of the last six seasons)

Truly, "The michigan difference"

Outstanding. Bo would be proud. The future is bright.

and the whole program still blames the last coach three years later.

and the AD thinks the whole problem was firing Lloyd Carr, who specialized in...a series of disappointing seasons that yielded spots in low-tier bowl games, just like the current guy.

and there is no semblance of an offensive philosophy.

and there is no sense of what the head coach actually does, besides recruit and wear short sleeves in winter.

other than that, everything's great.

1. Carr wasn't fired.
2. He didn't specialize in low-tier bowl games (3 BCS bowls in his last 5 seasons)
3. Hoke isn't even in the same time zone as Carr.

Other than that, dead on.

The U of M program is a piece of shit.

Hoke ain't shit.
Borges ain't shit.

In an era in which we are supposed to have a coach to rival Urban Meyer..we don't even have a good coach.

Nothing about the team says that they have a future. They aren't even going to fire an offensive coordinator who produced two straight negative rushing yard games. Hell, a team with the "prestige" of a Michigan should have the talent to produce at least one yard in a game on the ground..every game. but they don't.

I don't have the answers. The last team I was excited about was 2006 and them niggas stayed hurt...those very players are in the nfl always hurt, so at least it wasn't an aberration.

I have nothing to offer except the obvious. Which is why I called this post unnecessary. We ain't shit. The sky is blue, and hoes love Drake. aight.

Mattison!!! BALTIMORE RAVENS!

lol im done....happy new year fellas

http://www.mlive.com/wolverines/index.ssf/2013/12/column_michigan_wasnt_just_ave.html#incart_river

Column: Michigan wasn't just average this season, it was below average, and Saturday proved it

TEMPE, Ariz. On Saturday night in the desert, the Michigan football team spent some time dispelling a few theories.

Debunked theory No. 1: This team wasnt close to winning 10 games, or close to competing for a Big Ten title. It was close to being a disaster, but nothing more.

Debunked theory No. 2: This teams failures werent only because of Al Borges or Devin Gardner. This wasnt a one-man deal.

Debunked theory No. 3: This team wasnt average.

It was below average.

On Saturday night, the Wolverines wrote the final chapter of their 2013 season, and like most of the pages that preceded it, things were ugly as Kansas State throttled Michigan 31-14 in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, handing the Wolverines their fourth season of at least six losses in the last six years.

One team showed up to play football, the other was here to run out the clock.

You can guess which team was which.

The left foot never walked in step with the right for Michigan this season. If one side was up, the other was almost assuredly down especially over the seasons final two months.

Saturday was no different.

Michigan was forced to start freshman quarterback Shane Morris for the first time, and that was supposed to be the teams biggest concern entering this game.

Of course, it wasnt.

Morris looked like a skilled veteran throughout the game, calmly standing in the pocket and delivering laser throws all night long.

Only when he left the field, Michigans defense had no answer to Kansas States methodical, gashing offense.

As was the case against Ohio State, the Wolverines were battered at the line of scrimmage all game long, and never found a way to get themselves off the field when it mattered.

And it was a total team effort: The secondary was bad, the defensive line was soft and the linebackers were almost never in position.

On the flip side, while Morris looked impressive, the running game had the effectiveness of a wet match. The Wolverines played five different running backs in the first half and gained just 10 yards on 9 carries during that stretch.

There were missed blocks. There were drops. There were blown tackles and botched coverages.

Nothing was sharp, everything was clunky.

Just like the rest of the season.

Never at any point in 2013 did Michigan look fully prepared to do all the little things necessary to win football games. Never at any point did Michigan appear to be fundamentally sound. Never at any point did the team's locker room leadership take charge of the club and put an end to a miserable 1-5 close to the year.

They just weren't good enough.

To say Michigan has a lot of work to do this offseason is a massive understatement.

Brady Hokes football team wasnt good enough this season. His staff wasnt good enough. His players werent good enough. He wasnt good enough.

And Saturdays clunker in Arizona does nothing to end that narrative.

It only strengthens it.

bad seasons are one thing, but there doesn't seem to be any accountability for the failure at Michigan. bringing Borges back in year four is the biggest sign Hoke has no idea WTF he's doing.

But now I dont know. People are pissed. 3-7 for their last 10 is bad.

Doesnt help him that even some people who dont think they should fire him, would probably be ok with him as collateral damage as long as the AD went down too.

He played his Coordinator Sacrifice card well to pick up Nussmeier, and I honestly think that with the way they have recruited this this staff should get this year AND next year (just like Rodriguez also should have been given 2 more). But if UM loses more than 2 more games the rest of the way, who knows.

Utah - either way

Minnesota - W (actually..this *could* be too close for comfort as well)

Rutgers - W

Penn State - either way

Michigan State - either way

Indiana - Either Way..classic letdown scenario if you do somehow beat Sate

Northwestern - W

Maryland- W

Ohio State - either way...after last year I'm never discounting ttun in The Game

Either way, lemme get on record as saying I think Les Miles is your next head coach IF Brady Hoke is fired. I just dont think Harbaugh leaves the NFL and those two have to be at the top of Dave Brandon's list in his desk drawer.

But yeah...there is bad potential down the road. MSU is likely a loss, OSU is a probable loss in Columbus, PSU, is a MUST win, and I agree about Indiana.

8-4 will get him fired

In response to Reply # 51

this point he would need to find some way to win 10 games, including the bowl game. IMO a 9-4 record (including the bowl) with a 1-2 record against the rivals (and that embarrassment last week) isn't gonna cut it.

Which means he'd need to find a way to beat either MSU or OSU, and only one other loss with the rest of the games, AND win the bowl game.

Barring a miracle, he's out.

against my school or team because I want a coaching change. But this is a difficult program to get behind at this point. With David Brandon running things, I'm not falling for the promise of another coaching search because I doubt he would make the right call.

could see Mark Schlissel just staying with Brandon because he just got to the job himself and doesn't seem like a sports guy at all. Someone like him may by good with Brandon just because the department is doing well financially.

If the regents have power in the decision though that would be another story. The only Michigan AD I remember getting fired was Tom Goss after the basketball scandal...Bill Martin retired.

gonna get fired mid season, unless we lose in a way that is somehow more embarrassing than how we would play in the B1G without our coach (and I assume most of the staff). It'll be an end of the year call, a day that point there will be a full season to use in the eval.

But honestly, I think he's already out, JUST based on that ND game (and his already terrible record over the last few years.) Unless some miracle happens in the B1G - specifically against MSU and OSU.

hoke/mich isn't on some toxic lane kiffen leave his ass at the airport tarmac shit.

there's a major void of big time coaching candidates this year. last year you had strong and franklin. who's the big fish this upcoming offseason? Chad Morris?

Florida will be looking for a replacement as well and that will be a more attractive option than AA.

Next coach aint winning shit for 2 years

At least Michigan has a healthy stockpile of talent from the last 3+upcoming classes

And they have more money to spend, which helps but probably wont totally offset ESS EE CEE dreams.

So you may be right, but who knows? UF has been in bad shape since 2010 when Meyer checked out mentally. Not sure how attractive it is anymore, plus UF fans still carry a torch for Dan Mullen for whatever reason.

i can't recall if he was 2nd or 3rd.

I'm not sure if Schiano was part of the 1st or 2nd coaching search.

when I say "whiff" I'm speaking in terms of having a hard time attracting top level candidates. not necessarily the ultimate result of the hire.

Rich Rod definitely wasnt on the first list, but a lot of misinformation was out there

and Michigan hurt themselves by focusing on some really weird choices, like schiano

the way they did it was so bad, and excluding the end result, you're right. it was a complete botch. i think the plan originally was to pass off internally to Ron English, but after App St. and Oregon happened he was out of it, so they had no backup plan whatsoever, except Miles.

which wasnt much of a backup plan, because Lloyd was the biggest anti-Miles advocate in the world. he never forgave Miles for (allegedly) sleeping with Gary Moeller's wife while he was on staff and told everyone who would listen that Miles would coach Michigan over Carr's dead body.

so weird.

I left in the 3Q. Only thing that saved the weekend was seeing old

But yeah. If things don't turn around in a hurry hoke will be out. Was

Brandon and Hoke are finished.

Its not turning around, its not even levelling off. Straight nosedive. Watching Utah celebrate with their fans in an otherwise empty stadium was the nail in the coffin.

The defense gives up less than 270 total yards, 1 offensive TD, and they still lose by 16. The defense can play. The line is active, Peppers and Lewis are very good corners, and basically Mattison has been everything I hoped he would be. No one has even come close to being able to run on them. But the offense and special teams are making the defense look worse.

Hoke has no idea what he's doing offensively. From blowing the Iowa game in 2011 by putting Denard in the I-form, blowing the Nebraska game in 2012 by not having the 2nd best QB ready to play QB, to -48 last year, to finally reaping the results this year of putting Gardner thru 3 systems, 2 different positions, and countless physical beatings. They ruined him. And Shane Morris looks like a funball fountain so that should be fun.

I cant honestly believe Nussmeier is the reason for this...he didnt forget how to coach offense. He's no whiz-kid but he's got a track record.

One day, when the circumstamces are forgotten and all people have are numbers to compare, replacing Rich Rod with Hoke is gonna be a top 25 all time cfb L.

The reason why is because Brandon has got to go too. We've botched the last two coaching hires, and that's what has gotten us in this position. Can't afford to botch a third. I don't trust Brandon to get it right. But if Brandon and Hoke aren't fired until the end of the season, we gotta scramble to get both hires done...

But...If it ends up being Harbaugh or Miles then maybe that time is a good thing. We can wait until their seasons are over in Jan-Feb. BUT we need to know in advance that we are waiting on someone who wants the job.

Former Michigan quarterback Michael Taylor has multiple issues with the Michigan athletic department — and the university as a whole — and he let loose in a radio interview today.

Speaking on the "Ryan and Rico" show on WMGC-FM (105.1), Taylor shared his thoughts on the state of Michigan football ("a propaganda football team, telling people how great we are"), former players ("treated like glorified fans"), coach Brady Hoke ("his pedigree did not deserve to be a $4-million coach here at Michigan"), athletic director Dave Brandon and his personal frustration with the school.

— On the failed promotion of getting two free tickets for buying Coke products: "Sad. It's very, very embarrassing. I would never have thought, in my lifetime, that you couldn't give away Michigan tickets because folks wouldn't buy them. That is due to the leadership going on in the athletic department. ... As a former player, we're not treated any better. They try to come in and treat us like glorified fans years ago and now can't get guys to come back. Now there's so many gimmicks that you see and now they want us to come because they're having trouble filling up the stadium. That's a sad state of affairs, in my opinion."

— On the disrespect of former football players: "That's been the calling card for quite awhile now. It's sad. To give a person one ticket when you've got empty seats in the stadium. Most of us have families, and I don't think that's doing our legacy any justice. Two, they call themselves having a weekend of champions where they try to lump us in with these other sports. Now I have nothing personal against any other sport or anyone who played any other sport at Michigan. But I played on one of only six teams that won the Rose Bowl in 135 years at Michigan in football. So you cannot honor us on our field for all the blood, sweat and tears we have done. The most appalling part of that last year was we had to buy a ticket to come back and get honored. Michigan football is not going in the right direction. The leadership is bad, there are many more issues on and off the field than I care to talk about. It's just sad."

— On talk among his former teammates: "How mediocre we are. That's pretty much it. I'm not one for all the talk. Actions speak louder than words. What we've become is a propaganda football team, telling people how great we are when we're mediocre. When, in your last 12 games, you've only got victories over Northwestern, Appy State, Indiana and Miami of Ohio, that is not good. That is not good. We're mediocre right now. Will it stay that way? I don't know. I don't work there. I don't have the say-so. But I do know this: I know a few hundred players who are not happy with what is going on and definitely think changes need to be made."

— On what causes the disconnect: "It came to a certain point where folks wanted to root against our own program. When Rich Rodriguez got the job, I don't think people understand how difficult of a job it was that he took over. First of all, he didn't have 85 scholarship players when he took over the program. … We all understand he took over 50-55 scholarship players. You can't win in the Big Ten or anywhere else with that number of players. While we were going through our toughest times, guys decided they were going to sabotage recruiting, badmouth the program on their social media outlets. This is a new day and era where these kids are social media-driven. When you have those type of things, you lose recruits, you lose support."

— On his experience: "I've heard guys give excuses and said Jim Harbaugh lied about what Michigan steers you in, as far as where you go as a degree. That's the farthest thing from the truth, because I was accepted into Michigan in the engineering school, and they took me out of it and put me in LS&A. That's a fact. So before people talk about what Michigan will and won't do, they took away your dreams. I wanted to be an engineer. It just so happened that I graduated from the school of business. … Michigan has never talked about Michael Taylor being a Michigan business school graduate."

— On the coaching search in 2011: "We didn't get the coach who should have been our coach here (Harbaugh) because we insulted him in the first place. So then look who we get. It's nothing personal; Brady's a nice guy, I'm sure all you guys agree. I'll agree to that. Really nice guy, very personable guy. However, his pedigree did not deserve to be a $4-million coach here at Michigan."

Snyder also writes for The Detroit Free Press.

and ditch the program he built up to make a lateral move to mich.

the part about mich needing to hire former football players is kind of, ummm, weird. shouldn't you be trying to leverage what I understand to be a terrific alumni network?

small aside, i once sat next to jarrod bunch on a plane...this was sometime around the last year or two of the LLLLLLLLLoyd era. he had nothing but negative things to say about the program. which would lend some credence to these problems being very deep rooted.

>university for not somehow pulling it (Harbaugh) off, if that
>makes sense?

on the one hand he's making the point that ex players are treated like shit and lack current involvement with the program. fair enough.

but then he expects harbaugh (a man whose condemnation of the program taylor agreed with) to completely reverse his career trajectory in the nicest part of the country and move to AA to be the savior of a program that's treated it's former greats like shit?

and harbaugh would do this why? because he loves driving out to Toledo in the dead of winter to grovel at 16 years olds to come play for him? no, because michigan is such a great, storied program that's why! but wait, didn't taylor just say that in reality mich is nothing but a "propaganda program"? oh man, I'm confused.

taylor basically answered his own questions as to why harbaugh never got the gig. and why other top names haven't been beating down the door to go and coach in AA. all political and alumni issues aside, mich is a VERY difficult place to win big especially in the current climate of southern dominated football.

as to why michigan never even put out feelers to harbaugh about the position...first off, we don't know that to be true because a lot of times this stuff first goes through agents to gauge potential interest. maybe michigan ran it through that channel and were denied. no reason to make it a public offering when you know rejection is the only outcome. kind of like me making a youtube marriage proposal to kate upton. it's just not a good look.

No one can match the combination of money, facilities, academics, and widespread alumni.

Is it a little harder to recruit than FSU, UGA, or UF? Yes, but only in that it requires more legwork. Hoke hasnt had any problems pulling in extremely well-regarded recruiting classes.

The problem is the people within the program. The AD's office is run like a finance/banking corporation, instead of something that thrives on emotional resonance in fans, alumni, former players etc. Thats why people arent going to games, and thats why Michael Taylor has to buy a ticket if he wants to go.

All of the problems with Michigan's program are fixable within 1 academic semester by replacing the AD. The problems with the team are fixable with time for RS sophomores to turn into RS seniors, and a HC that is more concerned with what Michigam football can be, as opposed to what its been.

Just because Hoke isnt winning, doesnt mean its a hard place to win.

it shouldn't be hard to win at Michigan. And we can recruit on a much wider national base than MSU. This is all on the AD's office and the coaching in place.

MSU made their first Rose Bowl in 25 years last year

Michigan made 3 in the ten years prior, and won a BCS bowl in 2011

Its not arguable

MSU's present, its highest point in 50 years, is what base expectations are for UM *every year*

turnaround to becoming a relatively successful program, quickly. The B1G is obviously not a powerhouse conference right now. I think most alumni would define success at Michigan as something like "be in contention for the B1G every year, and win it at least once every 2-4 years, Beat OSU around half of the time and MSU most of the time, win at least 10 games most of the time (10 out of 12 or 13 including bowls and conference championship." I'm just coming up with this off the top of my head, and yeah you're gonna have some fans wanting us to always be in the top 5 or whatever nationally and regularly competing for national chips, but that isn't realistic IMO. Now if we do the above consistently for a while, then maybe the expectations will need to change.

All of that is VERY possible in terms of "winning at Michigan".

of course mich can "win" in this shitbird conference where the majority of teams refuse to invest in their football programs . 9-10 win seasons should be mandatory for mich. basically how LLLLLLLLLoyd was playing it.

>No one can match the combination of money, facilities, academics, and widespread alumni.

no in-state recruiting base. that's an enormous problem.

Les can win NC's at LSU. he can't at mich. whether or not that's important to him at his age is another issue. but I'm sure it is to other elite HC prospects.

In response to Reply # 104

Michigan has always recruited nationally. Oklahoma should theoretically have even worse long term potential than Michigan, but they (like Michigan) have a regional pull that negates the instate stuff.

It takes more effort, sure. But a school like Michigan (one of many) transcends that. As long as they are pulling thw elite instate kids when they pop up, thats more than good enough.

And as far as Lloyd goes, he had talent to go undefeated a lot more than once. He was just way too conservative. The 99, 00 03, and 04 teams could have beaten anybody. Hoke is the same way. That 2011 team lost 2 games and thwy were both HUGE coaching biffs. They could have been undefeated if they had been more willing to turn Denard loose.

but there's a reason why elite HC's (or even good HC's) have been steering clear of mich for the past 2 coaching searches. and I think the reason extends beyond a shitty admin.

OSU's AD is a fucking buffoon and the new president is even worse. I swear OSU's PR department huffs paint for breakfast, lunch and dinner. yet somehow that didn't get in the way of landing our big fish. and i have no doubt other top candidates would have been lining up if Meyer wasn't available.

Our timing this year (at least as of right now) SUCKS. AN AD who needs to be fired too, new president who doesn't care about athletics and isn't plugged in enough to understand how important this is, no obvious big name coaching candidates currently available, etc...

definitely think that entire OSU "scandal" situation was blown WAY out of proportion. It seems downright silly given a few years of time, and especially after seeing the PSU situation play out and them somehow getting their punishment reduced. So yeah, if Meyer wasn't available and OSU had waited it out a bit then I'm sure Tressel would have been fine.

He basically got the kiss of death from Saban and his AD within a week

"You never judge or evaluate a program based on one game or one season," Foley said. "That's just not how we do things here. We're going to evaluate where we're headed -- where the players are, how is recruiting going, what type of staff we have -- are we a better ? That's going to be plain for all of us to see..."

Maybe he can be convinced into reviving a mid tier program for a couple years before moving up somewhere else

They are still real butt hurt down there.

The Orlando Sentinel still publishes anti-Meyer pieces, and his staff may have gotten put on the No List right off the bat.

Who knows tho, Jeremy Foley seems like a pretty good AD. He may not have let that get in the way if he really wanted someone.

I honestly thought that, for better or worse,
Brady Hoke would get it done(W/L-wise) this
year based purely on the defense and the weakened
state of the B1G. Apparently, I am a fucking
idiot for thinking that, as UM was thoroughly
outclassed by bottom-feeder Minny today.

Where do we go from here? Who knows. It's time
to clean house, and I don't say that lightly.
Witnessing another grown man lose his job
(let alone his dream job) is a painful thing
and not something I would flippantly root for.
But it's time for Hoke and Brandon to go. The
sad irony of it is that Hoke will be blasted
for his handling of concussed Morris and that may
be the final straw that compels his termination.
I actually believe him that he had no idea what
was going on with Morris and think he would be one of
the first coaches in the country to watch out for
players safety. On the flip side, it's
classic Hoke (sans headset which would have
likely alerted him to these types of things) to be
oblivious. And that obliviousness is what will and,
generally should, bring him down.

Really hope dude lands on his feet. I always thought
he was a good human and had the best intentions
for the program. Clearly in over his head, but
not a reason to blast him.

Dave Brandon, on the other hand, fuck that dude
burn in hell motherfucker.

there was no reason for them to be better but you'd expect some evolution or progression in their program but obviously that hasn't happened. their player development is atrocious.

making Borges the fall guy never made any sense to me.

Borges had his own flaws. Things like calling playaction
on 3rd and 18 or shoehorning Denard/Devin under center
in an i-formation. But agreed, Nuss hasn't done much
better here.

I honestly thought that the O-line would improve on
balance notwithstanding the losses because they would
(1) finally settle on a consistent rotation so players
could gel and (2) raw, highly touted talent like Kalis
would experience immense improvement over the
course of another summer camp + conditioning.

Basically, I was 110% wrong on both counts.*

Sucks Michigan is in the gutter. Every year we suck
this bad, it hurts the conference and great rivalries
like OSU/MSU. Shit just isn't as fun when one side
isn't holding up the bargain of at least demonstrating
a modicum of competence. I mean even the trash
talking of a rival gets depressing when they're sorry
for this long.

*LMAO i actually ACTUALLY thought this squad
could put together 9-10 wins with a bowl game
this year. The sad thing is I think Rich Rod's 2008
team might put a good fight against this one.

Yes, yes, yes. In sports, you can get away with being non-traditional if you're getting wins. But when you lose and you do certain things that the overwhelming majority of other coaches don't do, it's gonna get questions. Any argument that he had for not wearing a headset goes out the window at this point. For his excuse to be that he didn't know what was going on with Morris (and like you, I think he really didn't) when everyone else in that stadium DID see how hurt he was, means there's an obvious follow up question. What else is he not knowing about while he's on the sidelines with no headset? What else is he missing that's going on with the games and with the team in general?

This dude has no idea how to interact with the media. I wonder if he realizes that snarky asshole behavior is only tolerated when you win games.
Opening Remarks:

“Alright, thanks for coming out. Number one, on Saturday I thought our guys were united. I thought they played hard together. I thought they fought, and sometimes that doesn't guarantee you anything but their effort as a team was something I was proud of, and I was proud of those kids. I know I said that on Saturday, but that hasn't changed. Sometimes fighting alone doesn't get a victory, but I think we need to change those results and execute a little better, coach a little better. It always starts with me and us. There was some good progress that was made and we want to really emphasize those things.
“Yesterday we didn't practice and that was already determined we weren't going to. We got back at– I don't know. I got home at 4:15 so I'm sure they got home late. We wanted to give them rest because rest will help you heal. We had good meetings yesterday. I think from the standpoint of corrections and emphasizing the things we want to see repeated I think were important.
“You know I don't talk about injuries unless a guy is going to miss the year, and unfortunately that's what Derrick Green – he broke his clavicle late in the football game. Nice run on our sidelines, but Derrick's attitude is very good. He knows there’s an expectation of him to help coach those young guys and coach guys and be integral and what we’re trying to get done. And so we are going to miss him, but DeVeon and Justice Hayes and Drake Johnson are three guys who need to step up, and two of them are guys that have a lot of game experience and played a lot of plays, so feel good about that. And we’ll miss Derrick, but this is like anything else in competition in sports; the next man's got to stand up.”

This is related; it might be injury related. DeVeon went down, too, in that game. Will he be ready to go on Saturday?

“Remember, I would only discuss injuries that were going to be here long.”
We haven’t seen Desmond since Appalachian State. Should we expect him to-

“I will only discuss injuries that are year-long. Thank you, though.”
Could you update us on the status of Jabrill Peppers?

“Okay. I guess we don't listen well.”
That's not an injury question.
“Well…”

Can you talk about Devin Gardner and what he did Saturday night, and he is your starting quarterback for Saturday?
“Yes.”
And where is Shane on that depth chart?
“Shane’s practicing. Devin is the starting quarterback. I thought Devin from the standpoint of running the offense, I thought on some explosive plays that he ran, I thought he ran hard, with a purpose. I thought he did a nice job. We had a little, I think, mix-up on a route with the interception but overall, number one, I thought his leadership was outstanding. When you're on the sidelines and the energy and all those things, he did a tremendous job. We’re pleased with the progress that he made Saturday, and we expect more progress this week.”
The play by Amara Darboh that was ruled an incompletion after review; has it been submitted to the Big Ten for review or have you been in touch with the conference yet?

“Yeah. We talked yesterday and have spoken to the right people, the appropriate people. I think we might see it differently, but at the same time that play is over with, and like I told the team yesterday anything that happened on Saturday night is things that we've got to move forward because we start to focus on Penn State.”
Justice did some nice things for you Saturday night. We’ve seen a little bit of him. We’ve not seen that much of Drake . Can you talk a little about, with them moving up the depth chart, what people will see from those two?
“Justice, he's primarily been a very good third-down back or when you get in those situations where from a protection standpoint – I do think Derrick and DeVeon are getting closer with that standpoint but I think Justice gives you something there. I think his ability out of the backfield has been good. He's a different style of runner where Drake is probably a combination of somewhere with Derrick and Justice as far as when you see his ability and his quickness in the hole.”
With Drake, he was No. 2 on the depth chart last year before his injury. You guys talked a lot about him preseason, but we haven’t seen much of him. What’s maybe held him back, and what areas of progress have you seen?

“Well, I think we talk about compete and challenge and there's always that. Not that he wasn't competing or challenging but as you go through practice and the execution of everything, we just thought needed cleaned up a little bit.”
But he’s made progress?
“He has. There's no question about it.”
Going back to Derrick a little bit, he had two of his runs that looked like some of his best runs since he’s been here. How big of a loss is he for the offense, and what are your thoughts about the running backs without him moving forward?

“I'm very confident in the three guys that will be doing most of the work as a running back. I'm highly confident of what they bring and what they can do. When you lose anybody – we've lost guys who have been on our scout team that you can't afford to lose because they give you such a good look, so is Derrick important? Yeah. Are we going to miss him? Sure we are, but that's why there’s 105 guys, 115 guys on this team and you've got to step in when your opportunity comes and make the most of it.”
MGoQuestion: With about 11 minutes left in the second quarter Rutgers punted-

“11 minutes left in the second quarter…”
MGoNowWe’reOnTheSamePage: Yep. Rutgers punted and Michigan had 10 men on the field to return-
“Yep, that was during the time where we were going to put the defense back out on the field in a safe punt kind of deal or were we going to go with our punt return group, and we decided to go with our punt return group and one individual didn't get that.”
Talk a little bit about Jourdan Lewis and his development over the last couple of years; what he’s learned and how he’s gotten better.

“Well, I think the one thing with JD is he's a consummate technique guy. We’ll get done with practice and he'll stay out there and just work with him and Terry Richardson will work through releases. His leadership is really developing. I think we think from that standpoint you're getting more from him. He's got a good burst from the physical aspect of it. There's a lot of things that he does awfully well that – he's got that make-up speed to some degree and that quickness. I think technique-wise he's improved immensely. I think the maturity and the maturation process is a big part of that and I can't say enough about how he's been for us. He's been very solid for us.”
Beyond the wins and losses, if you look at your expectations heading into the year are there areas where you haven’t met them or exceeded them as a team?

“Well, our expectations every year are – I think you always have an expectation to win in every game. I think you have an expectation, and we still always will, of winning the Big Ten championship. Have we played as well as a team on every Saturday? No. And do we need to keep coaching harder? Yes. Do we need to coach better? Yes. But from a standpoint of a team that's stood together and worked extremely hard every day and like working hard for each other, there's progress that's been made. Now, we got to go out and win.”
Did Kalis just beat out Magnuson there at that guard spot, or is Magnuson hurt?
“I think Kalis has played good football. I think he's done a nice job how he's responded. The commitment level that he made really since January has really shown itself.”
So he just won that job, and those are the five you’re comfortable with?
“Well, right now that's the five we’re playing with.”
Brady, shifting to this weekend’s game; given the recent events, the protest and everything, are you worried about fan attendance for Under the Lights?

“Uh, no.”
A twist on that approach; night games are designed to have a different feel to them and the excitement. What would it mean to these kids right now for a pretty whipped up crowd on Saturday night?

“Yeah, you took a different side to it. I think you're right. I think it will be – that environment I don't think is like any other. We’ve played enough night games at other places, and the environment that we’ve had here, there isn’t any question it amps your players up because of that environment and we’re excited about it. We’ve got great fans, and they’re fans with high expectations. Well, they should be and we feel the same way.”
With DeVeon, I think he’s only had one game with double-digit carries in his career. Is he capable of taking on a heavier load? Can he be a more every-down type back right now?

“Yeah. I know he carried the ball in high school 40-some times in a game against their lead rival, and I know it’s high school but it’s still a guy carrying it. How many snaps he gets during the course of the week, how he practices and all those things- I think he’s more than capable of it.”
Brady, how did the Big Ten explain that rule to you? Is it the finish the catch rule? Is that what they talked about?

“Yeah. There’s three phases to it, and sometimes that’s subjective of what phases you think were done properly and what weren’t. But we talked about it and number one, it can’t change anything. And so to spend a lot of time going back and talking about that distracts from what’s important, and that’s going back and getting our kids ready to play Penn State.”
You said you didn’t practice yesterday but you said Shane’s practicing, so he practiced last week a little bit?

“I’m sorry.”
You didn’t practice yesterday but you said Shane’s practicing. Does that mean he practiced last week a little bit or…?

“He’s practicing.”
We talked a little bit about Devin earlier and just how he’s hung in there. Have you noticed a change in him since you sat him down, or is it the same Devin?

“I think the maturity Devin’s gone through over the course of three years, three and a half years- I just think he keeps growing. He keeps growing as a person and evolving as a quarterback, and so from that standpoint I couldn’t be more pleased than to see how he worked last week, how he supported Shane all during that week that he wasn’t the starter.”

I just wanted to go back to the 10 men on the field-

“I’m sure you do. Go ahead.”
You’ve had a couple instances of this. What concerns you most? Is it not getting communication? Is it coaching?

“Well, I think it’s both, and it’s more coaching and that’s on me. The other thing I would say is it’s got to be something where we do a better job, and we’ve got to be locked in to doing a better job.”
Just for you personally, how are you able to separate this? You have the football, how does a coach in your position separate all the media attention, some of the negativity, and just being Brady Hoke? How do you separate the two?

“I think I am. I don’t know if I separate it. I don’t know if I quite understand. We’ve got great support here. We’ve got great kids here.”
As far as leaving work at work is where I’m going with that. Are you able to do that?

“I don’t think I’ve ever done that. We get about two weeks in the summer where you try and not take your cell phone and that’s about it. That’s just the way of the beat, and it’s not a beast. It’s fun. I get to help mentor kids. And I’ve got good support at home. Mrs. Hoke is a very good coach’s wife.”
Can you clarify- I know you don’t talk injuries, but-

“Correct.”
Is Magnuson not- did he not earn this because he’s injured and Kalis earned the spot at guard, or-

“I think they’re two really good football players that we’re glad they’re on our team.”
So you’re not saying anything.

“I didn’t say anything, I don’t think.”
It’s like reading tea leaves.

“Yeah. You might be good at that.”
“Alright guys, thank you very much. Thank you.”

when you're on the hot seat, the last enemy you need is
the media. this schtick works when you're winning (as you
said), but not when you are struggling. he's definitely
ruffled the feathers of at least a couple local beat writers.

The media has gotten on him since he came here about the headset, his use of Denard, etc. He's always given really brief answers to those types of questions but never had this smarmy, annoyed, combative vibe.

He knows he's out and this is just how he's responding to that fact.

"“As far as the score at the end, it just felt like we needed to put a stake in ‘em at that point,” Dantonio said. "To throw the stake down in our backyard out here and coming out there like they're all that, it got shoved in the last minute and a half and we were not going to pull off of that. Wasn't going to line up and kick a field goal, but if our guys could get it in (the end zone), we were going to get it in."

I first thought Michigan put a flag in midfield or something...but nah, just a marginal player shoving a knife in the ground near the end-zone. whoopty damn doo.

that Dantonio got so worked up about it kind of confirms his program's inferiority complex.

i dont live in michigan so i cant really say but this year there's just a sense of defeat ...even the players looked disinterested that last quarter vs Maryland
