"Mack Brown to retire (swipe)"

Gonna get interesting...
http://texas.rivals.com/content.asp?CID=1585894

Mack Brown, who united the Texas football program upon his arrival in 1998 and led the Longhorns to their first national title in 35 years, will announce he is stepping down after 16 years as UT's football coach, two high-level sources told Orangebloods.com.

Brown, who will leave Texas second in wins (158) only to legendary UT coach Darrell Royal (167), is expected to make the announcement by the end of the week.

Mack Brown will announce he's stepping down after 16 years at Texas.
"Mack Brown loves Texas and wants what's in the best interest of Texas and what's in the best interest of Mack Brown," one high-level source said. "I don't think it's been an easy decision. But he doesn't want negativity around the program he helped unify."

The Texas football banquet Friday night was expected to be a celebration of the Mack Brown era, sources said. The Valero Alamo Bowl against Oregon is expected to be Brown's last game at Texas.

Attempts to reach Brown, who has been in New York for College Football Hall of Fame activities, were unsuccessful. Brown's schedule Tuesday included out-of-state recruiting stops in Florida. Messages left with Brown's attorney, Joe Jamail, weren't immediately returned.

Brown, 62, who earned $5.4 million in 2013 and is under contract through Dec. 31, 2020, will receive the $2.75 million buyout in his contract and other considerations, sources said.

By voluntarily relinquishing his head coaching duties, as part of his current contract,Brown would be "reassigned to another significant position" in the athletic department at an annual salary of $500,000 through the end of his contract.

That position would be similar to the "special assistant to the president" designation formerly held by Royal, sources said.

Brown had a string of nine straight, 10-win seasons at Texas from 2001-2009. But the Longhorns followed up a loss to Alabama in the BCS national title game by going 5-7 in 2010, then 8-5 in 2011, 9-4 in 2012 and 8-4 this season.

Texas has an overall record of 30-20 (.600) the past four seasons. During that span, the Longhorns are 18-17 in Big 12 play (.514) and 14-11 at home (.560). Texas, which has also lost its last eight home games against opponents ranked in the AP Top 25, lost only 9 games at home from 1997-2009 (13 years).

Brown desperately wanted to restore the program to the championship level experienced from 2004-09, when Texas went 69-9, won the national title (2005), played for another (2009), won two BCS bowl games (2004 Rose, 2008 Fiesta) and two Big 12 titles (2005, 2009).

He hoped it would be this season, when, despite numerous season-ending injuries to key players and replacing defensive coordinator Manny Diaz with Greg Robinson two games into the season, UT still had a chance to win the Big 12 title on Saturday.

But the Longhorns lost 30-10 at Baylor, their fourth loss of the season, making Brown the first coach in Texas history to suffer four straight seasons with at least four losses.

The injuries this season included QB David Ash (head injury), LB Jordan Hicks (Achilles), DT Chris Whaley (knee), RB Johnathan Gray (Achilles) and OT Josh Cochran (shoulder).

Darrell Royal once called Brown a coach with "the best public relations skills I've ever seen." And Brown relied on Royal heavily to help him navigate the waters as Texas' coach from the day Brown interviewed for the Texas job.

Royal told Brown he would have to put "all the beebies back in the box" when it came to uniting the Texas faithful, which had been fractured since Royal retired in 1976 at the age of 52. At that time, Royal also served as athletic director and wanted to name Mike Campbell, his defensive coordinator, as his coaching successor.

But a couple of powerful regents overruled Royal. Fred Akers was hired as coach, and the Texas family was never quite unified through the Akers, David McWilliams, John Mackovic eras - until Brown arrived in 1998.

From the day he arrived in Austin after 10 years as coach at North Carolina, Brown told UT fans to "Come early, be loud, stay late and wear burnt orange."

Season tickets sold at Texas soared, from 38,100 in 1998 to a high of 84,500 in 2010. But after a surprising 5-7 record in 2010, season tickets dropped to 81,600 for 2011, then to 78,800 for 2012 and 76,300 for 2013.

That declining fan interest paralleled the Longhorns' performance on the field.

The family atmosphere at Texas created by Brown and his wife, Sally, attracted top talent, such as QBs Vince Young, RBs Jamaal Charles, Cedric Benson, WR Roy Williams, Butkus Award winner LB Derrick Johnson, DE Brian Orakpo, Thorpe Award winners CB Aaron Ross and CB Michael Huff and S Earl Thomas, S Kenny Vaccaro and S Michael Griffin.

From 2001-09, Brown enjoyed nine straight, 10-win seasons and was one win away from the 2001 Big 12 title and a berth in the national championship game against the Miami Hurricanes. But the Longhorns were upset in a turnover-filled loss to Colorado, a team it beat 41-7 earlier that season.

The success of Brown's Longhorns in the first decade of the 2000s helped make Texas a centerpiece of realignment in 2010 and 2011. The school could have basically named its conference but instead stayed in the Big 12 and landed a $300 million, 20-year contract from ESPN for the rights to the school's third-tier television inventory.

The deal remains unprecedented and helped Texas become the largest revenue-producing athletic department in the country, bringing in $163 million in 2012-13.

Look, if you haven't watched this program then you don't understand. At the end of the day the wins matter and he just hasn't been winning at a high enough clip.

You can miss me with the ten win seasons, which were great, but there should have been more conference championships, less curb stomping by bob stoops, more talent development, less fucked up recruiting classes and somewhat a semblance of a philosophy on either side of the ball.

Here's to change, whatever it may be.

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaaf/2013/12/10/texas-longhorns-football-coach-mack-brown-status/3959029/

Texas football coach Mack Brown denied a report Tuesday that he is stepping down as the Longhorns' coach. A person with knowledge of the situation also refuted the report to USA TODAY Sports.

The web site OrangeBloods.com reported that after 16 years, Brown will step down this week. OrangeBloods.com and other outlets reported Brown met Sunday with new Texas athletics director Steve Patterson.

Brown was in New York on Sunday and Monday for events related to the National Football Foundation, but left Tuesday.

Brown told 247Sports.com on Tuesday that he's recruiting in Florida. "If I had decided to step down I sure wouldn't be killing myself down here," Brown said. "I have not decided to step down."

A person with knowledge of the situation refuted the report of Brown's imminent resignation as well as the report of the meeting, telling USA TODAY Sports that Brown hasn't had a meeting about his status, hasn't told anyone he is stepping down, and that Brown is on the road recruiting. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation.

Joe Jamail, Brown's attorney, told The Associated Press on Tuesday: "Mack Brown has not resigned", and that his future is up to Brown.

Whatever happens – or doesn't – is not expected before a meeting Thursday of the Texas Board of Regents. On the agenda is something that could be a complicating factor: Texas president Bill Powers' job status.

Brown has a 158-47 record at Texas, which has included 11 victories in 15 bowl appearances and the 2005 BCS Championship. Before taking over in Austin in 1998, Brown coached North Carolina to six bowl games.

After losses in two of the Longhorns' first three games this season, Brown led Texas to wins in seven of its last nine games. The Longhorns are scheduled to play Oregon in the Alamo Bowl on Dec. 30.

I don't understand coach psychology man. Like Mack seems the least control-freaky of all the dudes out there, but I guess you got to be to live that lifestyle.

Cause if I was him? Shiiiiit. Let me recruit and be a grandfather to the program and let someone else worry about wins and losses.

Do you honestly think somebody like Saban would want Mack Brown looking over their shoulder trying to take credit for shit?

The largest athletic budget in the country, top notch facilities
first pick most always in the fertile recruiting state of Texas as the kingpin university in the state
Austin is a great city to live in, plus no weather issues
Winning the Big XII is easier than winning the SEC

Maybe even Saban would be granted the power to pull the plug on the colossal failure that is the Longhorn network?

It's a better job than Alabama, it's the best in the country

I was hoping that little run at the end of the season saved his job.

Every Big12 program is praying Mack stays on board. Get a competent coach back there and Texas will be dominant. That squad can get 7-8 wins each season just on autopilot.

Per @ChipBrownOB, Nick Saban isn't the only big name in play for the #Longhorns. Urban Meyer. Mike Tomlin. Jim Harbaugh. David Shaw.

Fuck Texas forever if they get Urban Meyer. I hope OSU puts a $20 million buyout clause in his contract.

Mike Tomlin needs to stay in Pittsburgh so we can how them niggas. I need him there on some agenda shit.

Harbaugh needs to go. I'm partying forever off the betrayal.

I mean I tend to consider Shaw to be a little overrated, but Harbaugh and Shaw have turned that place into a legit destination for elite prospects. That OL haul last year - er, 2 years ago? was absolutely obscene.

They have as much of a chance to win a title as anybody else out West, particularly in the playoff format.

Jim Harbaugh is gonna ditch his gig competing for super bowls to go chase 17 year olds in Texas? yeah, ok.

UT is a great gig but it's not the only school with $$, a strong recruiting base and facilities.

Tomlin and Harbaugh are leaving the NFL, specifically two historic and premier NFL franchises to recruit and coach high school kids at Texas.

This isn't a Nick Saban in over his head in the NFL situation, Tomlin and Harbaugh are actually successful NFL coaches and don't need to ditch their team in the middle of the night with their tales between their legs for a CFB job.

And while it was a pretty place, it'd be hard to compare to Texas. That plus the money and facilities. Plus major cities nearish, I'd put as a better place to reside and coach.

I think there's an "elite" category when it comes to facilities, and when you reach that point they're all fairly comparable.

But there are still things here and there that distinguish certain places from the others.

I'd say Oregon's Nike tones up the ante in the "style" department, but that's purely an aesthetic consideration.

I did note that UCLA's new facilities are being executed by the same firm (ZGF) that built our HDC - so that might be interesting.

... also we are still the only ones in the sport with that ridiculous laser timing sprint track that measures foot speed and foot pressure so pfffft

word is Alabama is already negotiating an extension for Saban at about $7mil/yr, unless Texas offers something stupid like $10yr and 1000 head of cattle or some shit I don't see him leaving. Honestly I could see Saban giving the NFL another shot before taking another college job.

are doing and thinking, "I can do that, no way those guys are smarter than me" I'm pretty sure there's some NFL owners out there thinking the same thing.

Saban has nothing left to prove on the college level. I'm sure in the back of his mind his less than successful stint as an NFL coach still sticks in his craw. He knows his buddy Bill Belichick struggled his first time out as a head coach and so did Carroll.

Big difference with Belichick and Saban is the way Saban just quit on the Dolphins when things started to get tough. I doubt many owners or GMs will want to take a chance on a CFB coach who walked away from a NFL job for a CFB opening.

Belichick was fired and then stuck around as an NFL coordinator, Saban walked away from the NFL. Same thing goes for PC.

Saban is clearly a quitter who couldn't make it in the NFL. Saban wasn't even on the "hot seat" or in danger of being fired at Miami.

There are desperate owners out there who would back up the truck for Saban, all it takes is one.

Saban bailed on team in salary cap hell for one of highest profile jobs in CFB.

It's not just facilities

Austin is a much better city to live than Tuscaloosa, by far the largest athletic budget in the country because Texas has the most money, period.

Winning in the Big XII is easier than winning in the SEC

Would you still be saying that about Alabama after the 2000 season when they went 3-8? I wouldn't

I would with Texas though, so many built in advantages

You think Saban gives a fuck about hanging out at hipster cafés in Austin?

You think he doesn't get anything he wants for his football team at Alabama?

Ok but this isn't 2000, this is 2013 and Saban gets whatever he wants right there in Tuscaloosa where he's the undisputed king of college football.

Alabama is folding at the poker table long before the oil baron money runs out

The Big XII is an easier conference to win in than the SEC right now

these aren't arguable points

Furthermore I don't think he has to work as hard to recruit in the state of Texas as the state of Alabama

It's a must to venture outside of the state of Alabama to recruit, 6 players from Texas on the roster IIRC, it's optional in Texas as a coach there

My point with the 3-8 is that even if Texas would go 3-8 one year, it doesn't matter. It's still the best job because of the resources available that a quick uptick is inevitable unless they have a complete fuckup in charge. If Alabama goes 3-8, why wouldn't the Florida or LSU jobs be just as good?

Saban lands the #1 or #2 ranked recruiting class every damn year

can recruit any state he wants to (bama has 3 ohio kids on their roster, for example)

he sends players to NFL by the boatload and has fielded the most talented team in football for 3 or 4 years running now with no signs of that changing.

how anyone could think that Saban needs to go elsewhere to find better talent is beyond me.

like i said earlier a potential move would be about money and a desire for a new challenge. not much else.

Judging the quality of recruits by that? Seems a bit disingenuous

One evaluates quite a bit better don't you think? Saban lives for recruiting, the often quoted sentiment about him being disgruntled that a national title robbed him a week of recruiting

I didn't say Saban needed to go to Texas for a better quality of recruit, I said it would be easier to recruit in Austin than Tuscaloosa.

You don't have to leave the state of Texas to do so. There is enough talent in the state for a coach not to have to if he doesn't want to. You can't say that about Alabama. I'm not saying Saban wouldn't go all over the country, hell he has the top recruit in Iowa this year for 2014, I'm just saying he or any other coach has the option, not so at Alabama.

Saban may not care about Austin, none of us know him personally to make a judgment yes or no, but I think I could say young recruits do. There is much more to do and a better quality of life found there than T-Town.

I also agree with those that say a new challenge or more money would have something to do with it.

In the end, all I am saying is the Texas job is the best in the country and everyone else falls in line behind it. In fact, I'd probably put Florida ahead of the Alabama job also, maybe Ohio State too. LSU and USC are in there somewhere too.

the life of a football player at a power conference university is homogeneous. their daily schedules are extremely regimented, and everybody gets the same perks: campus status, freebies and women. even that last part is basically a wash, since any school with 10,000+ undergrad will have great groupies to choose from. the high ratio of attractive women is more important for the regular students.

weather and distance from home are more important than what the surrounding "city" offers. that's more for the pros to consider.

as for Saban, he drinks Folgers and eats a Lil Debbie Oatmeal Creme Pie for breakfast everyday, so I don't think he'll be eating at Qui or has SXSW marked on his calendar. he's like most obsessive coaches who spend their time at the football complex, on the road recruiting or at home.

and that he doesn't have to leave the state of Texas.

Well this has been Mack's deal as well...so theoretically they'd be working with the same talent pool. The best players the state of Texas has to offer. Unless you think that Saban's top 25 in-state would look radically different than Mack's top 25 in-state.

>I didn't say Saban needed to go to Texas for a better quality
>of recruit, I said it would be easier to recruit in Austin
>than Tuscaloosa.

How does it get any better or easier than landing the nation's best ever single year? At a certain point there's a ceiling and Saban has hit that ceiling at Bama.

If you're saying that there'd be less travel time for Saban...that he wouldn't feel the need to inconvenience himself by trekking over to Iowa to grab their best recruit then I guess you can say that. But it's not like Saban is riding the back of a cargo train to Des Moines. I'm sure the private jet that Bama provides makes travel a non-issue.

I think the top 5 or so jobs are largely interchangeable.

And as great a gig as USC supposedly is they sure seem to have trouble attracting elite coaching candidates.

Actually, I think it might be. I don't really think they run the same offense. Furthermore, I agree with Will_5198 and others that say Saban gets the max potential out of recruits which leads to being overvalued as NFL prospects. Good for the players though.

Sure, and maybe the travel time is a joy to him. I'm just saying flying to a high school in Houston is probably still easier and less time than having to fly into Des Moines and find some podunk HS on a map or traipsing all over the Southeast. There are podunk HS in the vast state of Texas of course but I still think the recruiting time is minimized and most guys in their 60's aren't gung ho for 16 hour days as much as they were in their 20's and 30's.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10135355/nick-saban-agrees-new-deal-stay-alabama-crimson-tide

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama and Nick Saban have agreed to a long-term deal that will keep the four-time champion coach in Tuscaloosa, the school confirmed Friday night.

Saban's new deal was first reported by ESPN's Kirk Herbstreit.

Saban, who has recently been rumored as a candidate to replace Mack Brown at Texas, was already the highest paid coach in college football at $5.62 million per year after signing an extension in March that kept him under contract through 2020.

Alabama is -- and will be -- coach Nick Saban's legacy, and maybe now we can believe him that he's there for good, writes Chris Low. Blog

Alabama didn't release terms of the new deal, which must be approved by the board of trustees. The Tuscaloosa News reported the new contract will raise Saban's salary to between $7 and $7.5 million per year and further extend the length of the deal.

"We are very pleased to have this agreement completed," Saban said in a statement. "(Wife) Terry and our family are very happy in Tuscaloosa. It has become home to us. This agreement allows us to continue to build on the tremendous success that we have enjoyed to this point -- successes that have transcended the football field. Once Saban was off the table I figured Texas would stick with Brown for another season.

Best case scenario for me is if Saban pulls a Saban and takes the job after making the world believe he's staying at Bama. God, that would be incredible to witness.

I can't wait to see who they hire and see how the dominos fall. This is one of the most interesting parts of college football, to me.

Unless Auburn makes him, somehow, the highest paid coach in the country, he's going. Which is funny to me because it proves how "temporary" Auburn's program still is.

In response to Reply # 0

bang bang.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/10141073/david-shaw-stanford-cardinal-jump-nfl

Despite interest from NFL teams, coach David Shaw plans to stay at Stanford, according to two sources familiar with the situation.

AP Photo/Matt YorkDavid Shaw has Rose Bowl-bound Stanford in a BCS bowl game for the fourth consecutive season.

Shaw already is on the Houston Texans radar, and is expected to be on the radar of just about any NFL team making a head-coaching change.

The 41-year-old Shaw was Jim Harbaugh's offensive coordinator at Stanford, and succeeded him there when Harbaugh went to the San Francisco 49ers. He has also worked as an assistant coach with the Oakland Raiders and Philadelphia Eagles.

No. 5 Stanford (11-2) is the only program to make a BCS bowl the last four years. The twice-reigning Pac-12 champions, who also are the only team to win at least 11 games in each of those years, will go for a second straight Rose Bowl victory when they face No. 4 Michigan State (12-1) on Jan. 1.

oooh boy.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/sources--longhorns-interested-in-louisville-coach-charlie-strong-225120893-ncaaf.html

The Texas Longhorns have inquired about Louisville head coach Charlie Strong, sources told Yahoo Sports on Tuesday.
Strong has been considered a possible candidate for the vacant Longhorns head coaching position since former coach Mack Brown's ousting.

Sources also told Yahoo Sports that the Cardinals will be proactive in trying to keep Strong if he is offered the Texas job. Louisville signed Strong to an eight-year contract extension in early 2013 after the coach was approached about the then-vacant job at Tennessee. That extension bumped his annual base salary up to $3.7 million.

Orangebloods.com is reporting that Texas athletic director Steve Patterson flew to an undisclosed location on Tuesday to interview Louisville coach Charlie Strong.

Teddy graduates this winter I guess and can transfer and play immediately Rus Wilson style.

Total bullshit, but it's fun.

Also I hope it's not Charlie Strong because he's a fantastic coach and I don't want to hate him.
